Having Desdemona there will help him breathe, as she decides what will be for dinner before he heads back to the Queendom of Roses

She also tells him what he needs to do step-by-step, making sure he understands everything

Desdemona understands that this season is hard on Riddle, so she tries to leave him with one good experience, as that is what her brother would want if he were with her in Twisted Wonderland

He definitely did not want to get up and cook anything, but he is low-key scared of Desdemona so he got up and tied his hair back

Cooking wasn’t something he did recreationally, but he definitely tries harder once she made it into a competition for him

Talking to him in a rather condescending tone, Desdemona questioned whether he was too lazy to do anything and if Ruggie would be better help than he would

Well, he never backs down from a challenge, so he immediately started whisking the eggs needed for a recipe that the demoness had assigned to him, which made her laugh at how easy he was to convince

Again, one who is not typically found in the kitchen himself, and usually assigns a student under contract or one of the tweels

However he could not turn down Desdemona… again out of fear because she beat his ass during his overblot

It was not a surprise to see her as organized as she was that day, but he appreciated it because it made cooking way less overwhelming

The two actually shared a really deep conversation about Desdemona’s homeland, the Devildom, and her brother who was going to be king once their father passed down the crown and throne

He was very excited when Desdemona asked if he wanted to help her prepare Christmas Dinner for Ramshackle, but Jamil advised against it

After all, it wasn’t too long ago where Kalim tried to help but the kitchen ended up in flames, but she was confident in the Housewarden

She gave him rather easy tasks to complete while she did the more difficult things, but it was adorable to see Kalim so happy to help out

That’s where she asked about each and every one of his siblings, and she even told him about her younger brother, and a very strange friendship blossomed that day, surprising many who came through the Scarabia kitchen

Actually, I believe he does spend a bit of time in the kitchen because he prepares meals so that he can maintain health

So he accepted Desdemona’s invitation to help her prepare a meal, as she wanted to prepare food for Yuu and Grim before she headed back to the Devildom

He decided that he could spare some time and aid the demoness, even though he thought she wouldn’t need help due to being a demon

Turns out that she wanted to get to know her peers a bit better, as her brother often ‘made fun’ of her for never branching out past the 7 Avatars, their father, and him… as well as the Little Demons running about the castle

That being said, she was terrifying to him, so he had no other choice but to accept her invitation to help her cook some food for Yuu and Grim

No conversation was made on his part, but she and Ortho had a lighthearted conversation about their plans for Winter Break, and that’s how he learned that Desdemona was from the ‘Devildom’

Because he was invited to do something with someone who he considered a friend, he definitely accepted that invitation

Sebek was trying to shout at Desdemona for daring to order the Crowned Prince around, but she just used magic to shut him up

Anyway, it was a rather quiet moment in the kitchen, until he broke it by asking about the Devildom and if the castle had gargoyles

He was very excited when he heard that yes, there were gargoyles, and that she would be happy to take some pictures to show him, as it was a different type than he had seen thus far, since they were sculpted by demons

sugawara koshi; i definitely think he's so in tune with you, and your emotions. he learns your cues very well, and knows every little thing about you that there is to learn. if you're having a bad day, he'll notice right away. he won't comment on it though. all he'll do is these little things to try to cheer you up, but it's going to be very subtle. he'll let u rest ur head on his shoulder, run his fingers through ur hair. he'll sneakily buy u ur favorite snack. doesn't bring anything up until you do. ends the day with cuddles and a chick flick.

sawamura daichi; he notices but he doesn't really know how to react. not because he doesn't know what to do, but because he doesn't want to trigger you or deepen your sadness in any way. he's very careful with you. if it's something throughout the day, he's very quiet and tender with you, just silently lets you rest your head against his chest and rubs your back/arm tenderly. as you're walking home he asks if you want to talk about it, and reminds you that it's good to, but it's also okay if you don't want to.

nishinoya yuu; not a single sad moment with mr noya here. seriously you cannot breathe. ok but in all honesty, when you're sad. he's sad. sends you memes, and you'll be laughing at them with tears streaming down your face because you don't really know what you're feeling anymore. he does a lot of tiktok trends with you, any of the couple ones. grabs your faces and ,,, smooch all over. until you have no choice but to laugh. if you want to cry even more, he'll watch the notebook and the vow a thousand times over, and be a sobbing mess next to you. just don't tell the guys okay? <3

kageyama tobio; he's so.   bad. at this please help him. like he can tell ur sad, bc he's v good at reading people. but like. what the fuck is he supposed to do. anyways. when u two get to be alone and he kinda notices how quiet you are, he just nudges you slightly, and pulls you to him. it's easier to talk to you, he's calmer, when he can't directly look at you. when he feels you start to shake in his arms, feels the wet tears down your cheeks as you start to sob in his arms, his heart kinda breaks. all he can do is hold you, but it's what you need. and he'll listen too, if that's what you need as well.

tsukishima kei; i think he notices, but doesn't bring it up at all. the way he goes about it is he'll tease you to try and bring a smile on your face. because this is tsukki, and you know him well enough, you know the truth behind his jabs, enough to appreciate them. if it doesn't work, he'll just start to make fun of people in front of you, pointing random people out with you and just being like "wanna bet on what's making their relationship fall apart" this sadist i stg. like suga, he subtly makes you feel better until you yourself approach him about whatever's upsetting. actually gives 10/10 advice bc he's v honest.

asahi azumane; he's so empathetic oh my god bruh. notices immediately. "baby what's got u so upset" w a big pout on his face and when u just mumble "nothin" so low he barely catches it and instead throw yourself into his arms, he gives you a big, certified asahi bear hug. doesn't leave your side at all. constantly mutters sweet nothings and encouragements. if you do the bare minimum like make it through class he'll meet you after and be all "im so proud of my pretty baby". cuddles all day. all night. he's not very good at advice but he is the best listener !!! so attentive and you'll feel a huge weight lifted.

tanaka ryunosuke; "aight who do i need to jump" type beat. u love him so much though. that one sentence and sentiment already has you feeling better. immediately hugs you so tight, borderline suffocating you. "wanna ditch school". 100% willing to do so. he doesn't really know whether to approach it with distracting you or facing the obstacle head-on, but he finds a middle ground. eats your feelings out with you. saeko pulls out the embarrassing ryu pictures and suddenly you don't know why you were ever sad.

hinata shoyo; is really oblivious for a bit tbh. when he first meets you at the start of the day and his hyperactive self is greeted by your duller, sadder self, he doesn't think much of it. it's when you don't react to him or interact with him the way you usually would that he starts to notice you being off. he's actually super straightforward about it, and approaches you with some of your favorite snack that he bribed ukai to give him for free and just "wanna tell me whats up, baby?" he's so, so easy to talk to. immediately you're venting. and he listens to intently, gives stupidly good advice. it's like such simple approaches to your problem but?? it works. anyways you love him.

yamaguchi tadashi; will be super worried about what he could do to make it better, and kinda just tries to feed you as much positive energy as he can. once he's comfortable with people, he becomes really chatty, so i see him talking your ear off with the biggest smile on his face that you have no choice but to kind of ? mimic it? he just radiates goodness and sweetness that it shifts your own energy. he on some witchcraft shit on god. anyways when he walks you home or something, he'll just stop for a min and avoid your eyes when he says "ik u dont feel the best, but i dont want you to have to hide that from me, okay?" stan tadashi <3

nekoma ━━

kuroo tetsurō; drops everything. i mean it. i genuinely think kuroo would be such a good boyfriend that he'll sense it and text u as ur getting ready for school and be like "are u sad i feel like ur sad". you dont really wanna worry him and you'll just reassure him ur fine but he's already at your front door in — not his school uniform. insists the two of you take the day off saying "its fine babe im super smart". you two will spend the whole day just simply existing, talking when needed, he listens to you if you vent, and tries to come up with as many options of solutions for you so you don't feel weighed down. he'll make sure you eat even if you don't have an appetite, and will try to make u do something productive bc in a lotta cases, it could help you feel a lil better yk :)

kozume kenma; i pretend i do not see it — kozume kenma (2020). jbwjwks im jk. he's like tsukki in the sense that he will never address it, and he doesn't outwardly approach you about it. if it's just an off day for you, and you also happen to not have school, you'll go over to his house, hoping to feel a little bit better when you see him. "can i have a kiss, sunshine" to which he responds "why." you just go "im sad" and he gives u a big smooch. he'll have you lay on his lap while he plays his games, occasionally just sneaking in a peak at you to make sure you're okay. he'll ask if you wanna play to get your mind off things for a while. eventually, when things wind down a bit, he'll just mutter "yk i love you, yeah?" and that lights up your world hehe

haiba lev; as soon as he notices you're sad he just ☹️. he picks out a small flower and as soon as he sees you, he just tucks it by your ear, and smile so brightly and youll just be like "oh my god lev please stop being so cute". he won't really know what to do tbh, but the way he's so lost makes it so heartwarming and it honestly cheers you up all on its own. he just. "would a kiss make it better" and if you nod he'll just start kissing all over your face so softly, until he finally kisses your lips. when he pulls away he asks "again?" with a cute smile and if you nod he'll just kiss you over and over again. very simple way of cheering you up, and very foolproof tbh.

yaku morisuke; i think throughout the day, he might pester you a little bit about telling him what was wrong, but after you keep insisting you're fine, he relents, and decides that maybe giving you your own time and space to open up to him is better. he tries not to act differently in that sense, but he finds himself being a little more soft spoken, and gentler with you. i just had this image flash in my brain of you resting your head on a desk, head turned to the right, and then yaku comes and sits to your right, putting his head on the desk and facing you. and just. "hi :)" your heart melts. he kisses your forehead softly and tells you you're wonderful, in case you've forgotten. if, or when, you do open up to him, he'll be very eager to listen, and ready to fight off whoever upset you.

yamamoto taketora; this man is angry. like properly. "who the FUCK put a frown on my baby's face. speak the fuck up. i won't hurt you. ill just mutilate you." if you tell him that it's no one, and that you're just upset, he'll be so confused but he'll just nod and be like "okay. okay. do you want a hug?" and he'll hug you so tight. he'll admit that he doesn't like seeing you like this, and that he'll do anything to make it better. at first he's very cautious, but then he just lightbulb moment and as soon as you get home he'll be like "karaoke night babyyyyy" and then. no more sad.

aoba johsai ━━

oikawa tōru; very. perceptive. he greets you normally, even if he notices something's off, because he won't want to worsen anything. you meet him right before he has practice after school, and he'll just cup your face, lifting them to brush at your hair, and you just sigh. "my baby's had a long day, yeah?" he'll be very gentle and careful with you, i'm sure. he gives you a kiss, smiling softly into it, and reassuring you that you're much too strong to let a single bad day destroy you like this. he meets you later that night with a lotta ice cream and you two just binge watch any reality show you could find, shit talking the actors together. he himself is terrible at talking about his feelings this dumbass >:( so he understands if you don't want to yk? will encourage u to vent it out though. expect terrible, makes no sense advice

iwaizumi hajime; he kinda like. gets mad? when you continue to be upset and not speak about it? he's not mad at you! he's just. mad. this is iwa okay. anyways. he won't bring it up mostly, only being slightly more affectionate, especially in his hand holding, which is super gentle already as it is. when he invites you over, that's when he actually starts to talk to you about it. he lets you know that there's nothing worse than seeing you like this and not knowing what to do, and that he wants you to be able to talk to him. about anything. even if you think it's stupid. he'll listen, and tell you that it's not stupid if it's making you upset. he cooks for you <33333 then bakes with you <33333 you feel a lot lighter at the end of the night tbh

hanamaki takahiro; (he's so annoying i love him). as soon as he sees you upset he makes it his mission throughout the day to cheer you up in any possible way. spams your phone while you're class with ten thousand wholesome memes. sends you pick up lines. when he meets you in between classes he just yells out "how's my favorite person in the entire world!" and kisses you so wholly in the middle of the school hallway lmfao. while he's walking you home, takes a longer route and purposely, he passes by your favorite store/bakery/ice cream parlor. buys u ur favorite, and pretends to be shocked when you give him a piece. late at night, he'll facetime you, wondering how you're feeling, asking if you needed to talk about it. whether you do or you don't, you two will fall asleep facetiming.

matsukawa issei; the minute he sees you he's like "whats wrong". no hi or anything. he has like this frown on his face, which seems off bc it's rare to see a frown on issei's face, and he just tucks your chin in his palm gently and stares at your pout. "you good, baby?" he can tell you're not, but he wants you to be able to tell him on your own. sticks by your side the entire day, and nobody really mentions it. he talks to you as if it were a normal day, but his voice has a softer edge. he's not distracting you, per se. he's more, talking to fill the space while giving you your own space to think. once you're alone, he'll just drag you to the nearest comfy surface, flop down, and pull you on top of him. if you even try to resist or ask whats going on he'll just "nap and cuddles first." and when u sleep a lil bit of ur sadness away, he'll just let you talk it out as he continues to hold you <333

fukurodani ━━

bokuto kōtarō; just as empathetic as asahi, if not more. he really does feel it all with you. yk sympathy pains that partners get when women get contractions? bokuto is that partner. with bokuto, i feel like he'd never make you feel like you couldn't just straight up text him "im sad" and feel bad about it. if you ever do that, he'll immediately call, not even bothering with a text. if he can't come over, he stays with you until you've cried your heart out and then laughing until you can't breathe. if he can go over, he smothers you with love. repeatedly says "you know i love you, yeah? you know how grateful i am for you?" and in between kisses "im so lucky. so, so lucky."

akaashi keiji; i feel like as soon as akaashi notices you're down, or you're slightly off, he just grabs your hand and squeezes, forcing you to stop spacing out and focus on him for a second. if you're with a lot of people around you, he'll lean close to you and ask if you wanna go home. he'll be so soft and gentle and understanding, making up some excuse on the spot on why the two of you have to leave. if you're alone, he'll grab your hand and kind of tug you towards him, silently asking you to come into his arms, where you yourself know you feel safest. as soon as you're in the comfort of your home together, he'll like run you a bath and slip into it with you, just holding you until the water grows cold and the droplets on your skin are from your own tears. he'll wait it out, just holding you as reassurance, then make sure nothing's stopping you from spilling everything to him.

konoha akinori; when he first notices, he kinda deflates. like. who would wanna see their s/o like that? his smile is gentler when he greets you, and he's so soft with you. he grabs a pen and lifts your palm up, quickly scribbling down in his unique handwriting "i love you :) <3" on your skin, whispering for you not to wash it off until the end of the day. it is weirdly motivating tbh. as soon as the two of you are alone, he says it to you, face to face, an expected look on his face as if to ask "you know that, yeah?". puts on a movie to tune out the rest of the world, and holds you close to him as it drags on. he'll give advice if you're asking for it, but he's a better listener than anything else.

shiratorizawa ━━

ushijima wakatoshi; does not notice. in all honesty, he expects you to approach him whenever you have an issue or if you're upset. he's kinda like ? so confused when you're so down and really unresponsive, until he starts to notice how touchy you are. like you're leaning more into his touch, holding onto his hand like it's your lifeline, stealing his vbc jacket because it smells like him. is very straightforward, and will just ask you if you're okay as he walks/drives you home. kinda just stops in front of your house and presses a kiss to your forehead, then pulling you into a hug. "please don't be upset." he won't tell you that it kills him, but you can sense the unsaid words. he urges you to keep his jacket when he notices how safe it makes you feel. greets you the next morning with a new cactus in a pot hehe.

semi eita; is very cuddly once he notices. you'll sit at a table in school and he'll be sitting next to you, but he just pulls you into him and lets you rest your head on his chest, mumbling softly into your hair "i know you're sad and it's okay." he doesn't say anything else, just holds you there with a few kisses in between until he has to let go. late at night, if your thoughts are still keeping you up, he'll be up too, worrying, and will text you at 3 am if u wanna sneak out to meet him. takes you to the park and lays on the grass with you, picking out stars and constellations in the sky, with a soft soundtrack playing from his phone next to the two of you. he makes you feel secure enough to be sad even if you have all the blessings in the world, and makes sure you know that he'll always be there for you, even at 3 in the morning.

satori tendō; cheers you up by making you forget literally everything. replaces the sadness in your brain with just pure serotonin in any way he can think of. he'll take you to an amusement park, get ice cream with you, take you to the carnival in town, to the park, to the beach, to the pool, take you up to his house's rooftop. literally anything. and then he'll say something like "life's too short to spend it being sad over anything, darling." he's so understanding, and if you're frustrated or something he'll tell you to let it out by like wrestling him or some shit. exhausts you so much and you're filled to the brim with dopamine. he makes sure you're always happy, never seeing a dull moment in your relationship with him.

goshiki tsutomu; freaks out. plain and simple lmfao. but once he like grounds himself, he just softly comes up to you and asks you if you wanna talk about it, or if there's anything he can do. if yes, he'll break his leg running to go do it. if no, he'll just sit with you in silence, leaning over to hold your hand, talking to you about volleyball and his aspirations and how well he's improving. he's better at distracting you than helping you face your issues, mainly because he stresses out about giving the wrong advice or somehow making you sadder. he'll take a lot of pictures of you together on snapchat random filters to try and cheer you up, then later on in the night he'll send them to you and be like "look how cute we are ugh what a power couple" i love this dorkhabsjsks

shirabu kenjirō; i think he definitely notices, but keeps it to himself. he’d maybe think he’s imagining things and that you’re okay, so he’d go about his day normally. he doesn’t see you after school, and that’s when he puts two and two together and realizes yeah maybe you are sad. so he texts you, and texts you, and texts you, and gets no reply, so he just. comes over. unannounced. uninvited. just straight vibes. he’s already ordered your favorite take out, and already settling in bed with you under the cover with the lights dimmed and some chick flick playing in the background. gives the b e s t advice because he’s so blunt. like he will tell you if you’re overreacting, but you’re still his s/o, so he’d like wince as he says it. that’s all the sympathy you’re getting <3 but his bluntness will shock you into laughing hehe

inarizaki ━━

miya atsumu; usually, with atsumu, you’re always experiencing loud days. your relationship is all fun and flirty and suave and cool. but when he notices you’re sad, he goes quiet. like. eerily so. immediately pulls you aside somewhere private if you’re at a public place like school or something, and with his hands in yours he asks you if you’re okay. yk that thing where ur on the verge of tears and someone asks you if you’re okay and you just burst. yeah <3. his heart absolutely breaks and he just pulls you into a hug, resting your head on his chest and wrapping his arms around your neck. he just holds you there, even if you’re missing class/your friends are worried. he’ll stay with you until your tears have dried up, until you yourself let go.

miya osamu; i don’t see osamu as someone that loves pda. i feel like he’d be a more lowkey kinda guy. but if you’re sad, that gets thrown out the window. he doesn’t really in the moment, and won’t think too much when he pulls you close to his side and just wraps an arm around your waist/shoulder. yeah he’ll get looks but he can feel you trembling and shaking from holding back tears so yk, priorities. he’ll definitely stress eat with you. takes you literally anywhere and feeds you as you rant to him with tears streaming down your face and he’s just nodding sympathetically as he stuffs your mouth one bite after the other. romance is beautiful

suna rinatarō; when he notices you’re sad, his first response is alright what the fuck who messed up. he immediately blames someone else, and if he’s right, he’ll only get really agitated. just giving everyone the side eye from where you can’t see as he walks the two of you, your hand in his tight. if it’s not someone specific, he’ll just hum thoughtfully and then nod, before pulling you away somewhere private and just sitting you down and saying “talk.” very, very good listener. i can’t stress this enough. as you’re speaking he’s already thinking of a million different ways to help you solve your problem. walks with you as he traces your hands and just quietly tells you all the solutions.

aran ojiro; oh my god as a boyfriend he ticks all the boxes. he’s great at communicating, always satisfies your needs, is trustworthy and trusts you. the list goes on. immediately knows when you’re off/sad, and just smiles softly as he takes your hand, kissing your knuckles and saying, “let’s go home, yeah?” at home, he makes you some calming tea, probably pulls out some cookies or brownies or biscuits (that HE made but we’re not gonna get into that) and just listens as you talk, whether it’s about why you’re sad or just in general. gives you honest advice, but also a lil biased bc he loves you hehe <3

Tsukkishima, Tanaka, Nishinoya, and Sugawara’s Reacting to Their S/O Cheering Them On

@nikki--han requested: so so, can you make headcanons for Tsukki, Tanaka, Noya and Suga when their s/o cheering them during a match?

A/N: First official request! Hello everyone! Rules, about me, and (possible) masterlist will be posted shortly! I really went ham on this I wanted to go real big to start everything off. Requests are currently open so please feel free to send one in (please remember that this post is an exception and that requests can only have a max of three characters)

Tsukkishima Kei:

-He’s honestly really caught off guard by it?? He’d expect something like this from his brother maybe, but you? One of the things he likes about you is that you’re relatively quiet, but hearing you call out his name in the stands with his brother makes his heart swell more than he’d like to admit

-He quickly looks away and feigns annoyance when in reality he’s just super flustered. Yamaguchi knows exactly how he’s feeling and because he’s your local Tsukki expert and Sugawara knows because he’s that much of a little shit

-Tanaka and Noya hear you calling out for Tsukki and when they see that his face looks slightly annoyed it pisses them off, but when Yams tells them it’s because he’s flustered and embarrassed they don’t stfu. Tsukki doesn’t even have it in him to say his usual “shut up Yamaguchi” because he’s right and he knows that if they see his blush it’ll only add more fuel to the flame

-He does his best to carry on like usual but his teammates quickly notice that he’s actually putting in more effort than usual? It’s really off-putting but when they put two and two together that it’s because of you they all low key go soft because awww Tsukki is being a soft boyfie!

-Hinata doesn’t know how to stfu either and makes a direct statement abt this “Hey Tsukishima! You’re playing a lot better today! … Is it because Y/N’s here?”

-Tsukkishima gives him a hella death glare for this and Hinata cowers in fear because he doesn’t understand why he got him so angry. He was just pointing out the obvious Tsukki, don’t be a meanie!

-After Karasuno takes the win he meets up with you and Akiteru. He acts like he’s annoyed at you two but when Akiteru sees the way he’s looking at you he leaves you alone. The rest of Karasuno can see it too and as much as Noya and Tanaka want to stick around for the tea, they’re dragged away by Ennoshita who tells them to mind their business

-Unrelated, but Kiyoko is also especially entertained by all of this and gives a giggle and a knowing look to Tsukki as he makes his way to you (much to his embarrassment)

-When you two are alone you’re looking up at him questioningly. “Tsukki? Are you okay? Did I do something wrong by coming here? I’m sorry I just wanted to-“

-He’s hugging you. He’s hugging you so freaking tight and hiding his face in your shoulder because he can’t fathom how absolutely in love he is with you right now. He’s embarrassed and happy and angry because his heart is beating fast and he doesn’t get it and

-He forgets all of that when you hug him back. You two step just a little closer to each other and when he’s ready he’s gives a soft little kiss to your cheek and quietly whispers a “thank you” in your ear

Tanaka Ryuunosuke:

-Mans sees you and he. Is. HYPED! They’re doing their whole “walk dramatically to the court to assert dominance” thing and he’s all focused and has his gangsta face on but the moment he hears your beautiful voice shout “Tanaka(-senpai)!!!” He’s done for.

-He sees you and suddenly his gangsta face is now a puppy-that’s-desperate-for-attention face and he wants to cry on the spot he loves you so much?? You’re even out there with his sister and both of you have Pom poms and stuff and maybe even color coordinated your outfits to match w Karasuno’s colors and he is on cloud 9 you look so freakin cute!! (And he’s gotta have a pic of you in that outfit)

-Immediately grabs Noya (who’s also doing an Angry™ face) by the shoulder and stops him just so that they can admire the two of you together. Noya is obv your bestie and he absolutely loves seeing you and his other bestie happy and he really likes the outfits you're wearing! They’re crying happy tears and Tanaka’s going “I’m so lucky man” and Noya’s agreeing saying “We both are” because who gave you the right to be so gosh darn cute

-You notice Noya and wave to him too, which gives him happy tears as he’s waving back to you and Tanaka’s blowing you kisses and at this point everybody in Karasuno is looking at them in disgust because they’re so weird but they also think you’re cute and appreciate you being here to cheer them all on, especially since you’ve been so supportive even before they made it this far, offering to get snacks and even find ways to increase the budget.

-Eventually though they have to start the game and Daichi begrudgingly starts dragging them “Cmon you two, you can talk to Y/N later after we take our victory” Noya and Tanaka immediately snap out of it because as much as they both love you, you and them both know that the game is what takes top priority right now. Tanaka looks up at you in the stands and shouts “I’ll talk to you after the game, ok Babe! This victory’s gonna be for you!” And he blows one more kiss to you before resuming his walk to the court, now 10x more confident

-needless to say he is on F I R E the entire time, absolutely destroying the opposing team and doing so knowingly, giving an evil smirk every time he blocks or spikes a really nasty kill. At this point the other team is absolutely pissed off with how cocky he looks (some even knowing about his whole encounter with you in the stands getting jealous; “the only reason why he’s good is because his s/o’s here”)

-Ukai and Takeda are especially pleased with him and everyone on the team knows that this sudden boost in morale and confidence is thanks to you. They also notice that Tanaka’s actually quieter now, focused on the game and on listening to what his teammates have to say when they’re discussing strategy off the court.

-Now even though Tanaka’s an amazing player, he’s human and he makes mistakes sometimes. But knowing that you’re up there pisses him off even more but when he feels himself getting really stressed, it’s Kiyoko who says to him “Tanaka, you’re getting carried away. Remember, Y/N’s cheering for you. Would they really wanna see you lose your cool like this?” Everybody’s so surprised because A)Kiyoko’s saying words and B)Shes being nice to Tanaka??? But Tanaka appreciates it and they share an agreeing nod that this is something he can easily make up for. He goes back into the game and everybody’s telling him not to mind and just to carry on

-And carry on they do, all the way to fucking victory. They’re all exhausted and ready to just go out and eat and sleep but when Tanaka sees you waiting for him outside the doors he immediately runs to you and picks you up (regardless of whether or not you’re taller/shorter than him) and is peppering you with kisses, not caring who sees or gags (*cough*Tsukki*cough*) and you’re congratulating him and the team (who all thank you)

-side note: even though you give Noya plenty of attention too, the attention of your bestie still isn’t quite the same as the attention of a partner. Both Kiyoko and Yachi notice this, Kiyoko giving him a good pat on the back and a “well done” and Yachi giving him a high five and a hug. It’s still not quite the same but he relishes in it anyway because girls ((this is me vicariously living through Kiyoko and Yachi bc I too want to smother Noya in hugs))

-After eating out and celebrating and finally getting home (your parents allowing you to stay with Tanaka so long as Saeko sticks around to make sure no funny business is going on) Tanaka and you are cuddling on the couch, still pressing soft kisses to one another as he also pats your head telling you how much he loves you: “Thank you for coming Y/N, you really make me feel like the luckiest guy in the world”

Nishinoya Yuu:

-Another hyped boy!! Holy shit he loves you so much that he’s bouncing up and down on the closest person (which just so happens to be Asahi, who is terrified right now because he’s being shaken like a rattle) and pointing at you aggressively while also waving “GUYS GUYS GUYS OMG ITS Y/N GUYS ITS Y/N HI BABY!!!”

-Hinata sees this and probably says something like “Wow!! Noya-San’s s/o came to support him! That’s so cool” to which Noya absolutely just basks in because hell yeah he’s the cool guy of the group that got an s/o before everybody else. Tsukki gives an annoyed groan and Tanaka’s hyping his buddy up while also giving a wave to you. Asahi wants to wave too but is too squeamish from how much Noya’s shaking him. Suga has to get him off of him because no. The only person allowed to emotionally and physically scar Asahi is him (re: literally every time Suga hits Asahi as motivation)

-He’s jumping up and down in front of the crowd, not caring who sees or hears him as he shouts to you “This win’s gonna be for you baby!!” You laugh and reassure him that he’s gonna do great and that you’ll see him after the game, but you know that look on Daichi’s face and quickly advise Noya to go back before Daichi sends him to an early grave.

-He gives a pout and goes back but not before flashing you one more big grin that absolutely melts your heart. Tanaka’s giving him a pat on the back, assuring him that they’re gonna win this and he’ll be able to smooch your beautiful face the moment they get off the court. Noya’s extra pumped now and the whole team is ready to take home the win

-Cheering Noya on not only inflates his ego but apparently it boosts his speed as he’s receiving balls left and right, not even giving the opponents a chance to score a point. He can receive even the nastiest spikes and he’s loving the way his arms are burning (he makes a note to show them off to you later, almost as if they’re battle scars he got while fighting heroically. Ofc you reassure him as such when you’re praising him later)

-During timeouts or anytime he’s out of the court and just resting on the bench getting his thoughts together he’s also looking at you. You both give each other encouraging looks and when you make a little heart at him with your hands, he’s blushing extra hard and he’s thinking his heart is going to jump right out of his chest. He’s grabbing the nearest person (Probably Narita or Kinoshita, poor bbys) and clutching his heart while saying “My Y/N is so freaking cute look at how cute they are oh my god-“ “Yup, mhm, absolutely adorable Noya now please let go of me-“

-At one point he does rolling thunder (yes, and he says it out loud while doing it) and for a hot second everything goes kinda silent because why tf did he say that out loud that’s so stupid- but to you that just makes him extra cool as you’re cheering him on in the stands shouting “YEAH!! GO ROLLING THUNDER!!!” Noya has selective hearing and only hears you praising him so his ego is inflated even further

-When Karasuno inevitably wins thanks to everyone’s hard work, but especially Noya’s incredible receives and the Kghn quick attack, everyone is cheering and laughing and when Noya and Tanaka do a really sweet chest bump, Noya’s immediately looking up to you in the stands going “See! Told you I’d win for you!” You give a soft smile and laugh quietly as you get up to go down and congratulate the rest of the team

-Noya jumps on you the moment he sees you, smothering you in kisses and love and while he is cute it’s also low key gross because he is sweating really really bad and he’s getting it all over your clothes. You know if you push him off though, he’ll be pouty and upset so you let him do it anyway because what’s one happy boyfriend compared to some slightly sweaty clothes?

-Even though everybody is really tired and exhausted Noya somehow isn’t? Or at least it’s not showing as he’s happily stuffing his face and going on and on to you how amazing he felt while playing today, pulling a Hinata and giving weird sound effects while he’s eating (“mmfmmfandWOOSH-“) literally nobody can understand him but because he’s your boyfriend and you’re a certified Nishinoya Professional™ you understand him perfectly and eagerly add on (at this point nobody’s surprised because they all know how whipped you two are).

-The moment he gets home though he is OUT and immediately falls asleep as soon as you two are cuddling on his bed. As you’re stroking his hair and he’s slowly drifting further into unconsciousness in your arms he whispers to you before completely going out “I love you Y/N, thank you for cheering me on”

Sugawara Koushi:

-Now one might think that because he’s one of the more “mature” ones of the group he’d be more calm and collected right? WRONG, mans is absolutely freaking out. You all saw the way he was when Kiyoko held his hands, how do you think he’d react to his beautiful s/o calling his name in the stands? He’s absolutely going to be flustered as hell

-He’s so happy and he feels so grateful that you’re here to cheer him on and he needs Daichi and Asahi to hold him for a quick sec because he’s just so happy that you’re there. Asahi and Daichi are high key making fun of him but Sugawara doesn’t give a shit and knows it’s just bc they’re jealous they don’t have an s/o yet (totally that and not because he looks like a tomato, yep absolutely)

-You give your hellos to Asahi, Daichi, and Kiyoko too and they all promise that he’ll be fine and will definitely have his time to shine today. Even though you don’t mind whether or not he actually gets to play, you nod and continue to cheer them on.

-When Ukai actually subs him in Suga is on fire, utilizing the signals to the max and scoring so many points for the team. He even does a few setter dumps! He can’t quite put his finger on it but he feels especially in shape today and like he can take anything on. He definitely has you to thank for that.

-He actually stays in the game from then on nearly all the way to the end of the match, only being subbed out for Hinata when Ukai wanted to use his and Kageyama’s quick attack. It’s only when he finally reaches the sidelines does it dawn on him that oh shit he’s going to pass out- his energy today has been fueled x10 and when he finally gets to calm down and focus on himself, he’s gasping for water and dripping in sweat. He looks up to you and you’re concerned face because you see how absolutely wrecked he looks but he gives you a cute smile to reassure you that he’s completely fine and even blows you a kiss and mouths an “I love you”- shit you’re so soft for him (even when he’s a sweaty mess)

-Soon he’s out back out there and it’s a little concerning how easily he was able to go back into his Uber focused mode. Nonetheless it was especially useful, as he immediately pulled off a setter dump and got the team to match point. At this point you and Yachi are clinging to each other in the stands, anxious for the result of the game.

-Karasuno wins! And you’re all jumping in the air and the team is hyped and everybody’s happy and patting Sugawara on the back for being the absolute MVP of the day. He’s just so happy that he managed to be out there for so long, especially since it’s a game that you, his beautiful, wonderful s/o came to attend.

-He’s low key limping out of the doors because damn is he so freaking tired and almost collapses on you the moment you come in for a hug (doing so after he first cups your face and gives your forehead a kiss). You’re holding him by the waist and he has his arms wrapped around your shoulders as he’s giving you soft kisses to the neck and cheek and it’s all low key embarrassing and you’re blushing but also giggling because he’s cute and it tickles

-He’s absolutely clinging to you after the game, always with a hand on your waist/hip or maybe even on your ass (“Koushi not in public-“) but either way he can’t keep his hands off you and has to have his head on your shoulder as you’re all waiting for the food to come. Nobody except Daichi says anything because they all know that he’s absolutely dead at this point but Daichi’s teasing him for being so clingy (“wow, you really can’t keep it to yourself today can you?” “Shut it Daichi-“ “Koushi, be nice!”)

-He doesn’t even finish his food because he’s so sleepy, so you pack it up and Takeda offers to drive you two to Sugawara’s house, which you accept. He falls asleep in the car and you’re carrying him out by the shoulder when you get home (Takeda says he’ll help but you insist it’s fine). When you close the door behind you he gets up and lazily kabedons you against it. He lifts his head from your shoulder and gives a tender kiss to your lips, which you happily accept and cup his face for. When you two separate he’s giving a sleepy smile, his eyes lidded but still so very in love with you. One more kiss to your lips before he says “Thank you for being there for me”

Karasuno at Amusement Parks

I miss going to amusement parks (thanks COVID), and I saw that amazing sketch of the first years on a drop-zone ride (Thank you Furudate), so I got... ideas. :)

Daichi Sawamura: Everyone loves Diachi, but it's a well known fact he's an Amusement Park BAD LUCK CHARM. If you want to get stuck on a ferris wheel, have your favourite ride break down right as you get to the front of the line, or get food poisoning from a questionable hot dog stand... ride with Daichi.

Koushi Sugawara: He's so excited, he's practically vibrating with joy! It makes him feel especially proud when he can convince someone to try a new ride with him, especially if they're a bit scared. His enthusiasm is unbreakable... until he gets soaked on the log ride and just feels miserable [and damp] for the rest of the day. Cotton candy will cheer him up, temporarily.

Asahi Azumane: Everyone THINKS an amusement park would be a nightmare for him, but he's completely fine on rides. As long as he knows the seatbelts work, he's willing to try any ride! He is susceptible to motion sickness, but give him 10 minutes and a lemonade and he'll be fine. His friends keep trying to get him to do that "We can guess how old you are?" games but he has yet to be convinced.

Yuu Nishinoya: Noya makes up for being too short for some of the attractions by being an absolute nusance in the Kids section. He definitely does the bungee jumping and slingshot ride, and is a little bit too competitive at bumper cars. About a half hour before the park closes, he orders funnel cakes, smothered in candied strawberries and enough whipped cream & powdered sugar to give you diabetes on sight. He eats it all (damn his metabolism) and sugar crashes on the ride home.

Ryuunosuke Tananka: He's never dressed properly for the rides he wants to go on, so he will inevitably lose a flip-flop, sunglasses, hat, etc on a ride during the day. He's also obsessed with carnival food-- funnel cakes, those obnoxiously large pixie sticks, churros, cotton candy, caramel apples, deep fried EVERYTHING... he'll eat everything. Whether or not it stays down... that's another story.

Chikara Ennoshita: He's that one person who needs to make sure you can re-enter the park if you leave, because there's no way he's having all that deep fried carnival food for lunch. He likes moderate rides, something that will get his heart racing but won't make him feel like he's dying. The only time he went on a truly "scary ride" was when he heard a particular coaster was being torn down at the end of the season and he wanted to say that he went on it at least once.

Hisashi Kinoshita: He'll hang with his friends during the morning, but after lunch, you'll find him in the water park. Roller coasters are good and all, but really, he just wants to float down the lazy river all afternoon & hit a few water slides. He'll always convince his friends to take pictures wearing stupid hats from the gift shop, or posing with mascots.

Kazuhito Narita: He knows the coaster stats ("The first drop on that one is 94meters" "This one has a top speed of 148 km/h") and likes to share them to pass the time in line. He'll try any of the rides-- but he is NOT a fan of the rickety wooden roller coasters, he just doesn't like being shaken around.  He's also a fan of water rides, like log coasters or those boat rides where you get water guns.

Tobio Kageyama: He's a coaster clinger. It doesn't matter who he's riding with-- he's grabbing them and yelling. He also cannot, under any circumstances, do the swinging rides, like the pirate ship thing. NOPE. He's stubborn, so when he gets motion sick he just tries to walk[stumble] and grin[grimace] through it, when really he just needs to sit down and wait a bit. Somehow always manages to get seperated from the group, and they always find him on the carosel.

Shoyo Hinata: He's in his element! He bought a Fast Pass for lines, and hits the biggest coasters first! Can somehow convince ANYONE to come with him. He laughs through all the rides, goes on the "scary" ones repeatedly, and never gets motion sickness. Tries all the carnival games and loses most of the money he brought trying to get a specific plushie as a prize.

Kei Tsukkishima: Tsukki is absolutely enjoying himself. Really. He's definitely not just going on the rides so he doesn't seem scared. He's totally not holding other people's bags so he has an excuse not to get on that roller coaster, he's just feeling gracious. And no, he's not feeling nauseous, please stop asking.

Tadashi Yamaguchi: He's terrified at the start of the day, staring at the big coasters with trepidation and slightly shaking in line. But, after that first drop, his screams become laughter and he ends up having the time of his life! He will buy the coaster pictures even though they're ridiculously overpriced and probably picks up one of those "I survived the [insert name of the scariest coaster in the park here]" t-shirts.

Shimizu Kiyoko: She loves the roller coasters where your feet hang in the air-- she'll ride all of them, even the ones for small kids. She's always there to be a ride buddy if someone doesn't want to go alone. Kiyoko is a BOSS at carnival games. Everyone claims they're rigged but she just wins the best prizes on the first try. It's amazing.

Hitoka Yachi: Yachi likes amusement parks rides, really, as long as they don't contain DROPS. She's got low iron, ok, it's not her fault she blacks out. But, she can do all the spinning & swinging rides that usually make people sick without feeling a thing. She'll happily hold people's bags while they ride, or do a snack run while others are in line.

Chapter one: Grandpa’s place (Magic in cream)

My grandfather told me tales of fae, and fairytales of creatures not human. These creatures would visit his little parlor on Maplewood once and awhile. He told me of the young fae who sat at his parlor and ordered milkshakes and sundaes all by his lonesome. He told me of the young merman who sat at his barstool with a sundae and would cry about the other young kids and how they treated him. He told a story of the young willow the wisp who was feared and told he was cursed. He told me of the lion cub who used to never smile except when he was alone with my grandfather, and an ice cream cone in hand. He told me of the faraway prince who would be incredibly nervous when my grandfather would hand him something, but the worry would wipe off when he had a few bites. He told me of the young beauty that no one understood, but my grandfather could understand and talk with him for hours. He told me of the young protege who only ordered the strawberry sundae, but as soon as his mother was gone, grandfather gave him something else. Grandfather told me of the birdman who handled his will and any problem in court for him, who ordered a malt when he came in to chat with my grandfather.

As I got older I forgot and brushed off these tales, though I never could shake the magic I felt when I heard the tales, or when I visited my grandfather. But he’s been dead three years now, and he left his parlor to me. I never went back, until now that is. I’ve wanted to go back for so long now, but I haven’t. I’ve been too busy, or not emotionally ready to. But then I’ve decided to come back now that I’ve quit my job, I’m moving back to Grandpa’s city, much to the warnings of my family. I’m going back. I bought myself a train ticket, and today’s the day. Grandpa, I promise I’ll start anew, just like you wanted me too. I promise I will uphold your magic.

It’s 9:30 at night currently, I have my grandfather’s old suitcase in hand. It’s the one thing I had left of him other than his old ice cream shop.

“Now arriving in Metatropolis outskirts, Metatropolis outskirts now boarding.”

This is my stop, the doors open, and I walk out the sliding doors. No one else is on the platform, no big surprise there. It’s late at night and not many people come to the outskirts of Metropolis. I set up maps on my phone and follow the directions to the Night Raven Law firm, it’s run by an old friend of my grandfather. The owner, Dire Crowely has the keys to the old ice cream shoppe.

“AHAHA, you must be young Yuu [redacted]! I remember your grandfather gushing about how lovely you were!” An oddly dressed man greets me outside of the office.

“I believe this key belongs to you? I’m quite happy you decided to come to our city after so many years! If you ever need any legal advice, please, do not hesitate to call me.”

He hands me a business card and the key for the parlor, then I head to Maplewood avenue.

I see the old parlor in front of me. It’s run down now, the paint peeling and chipping. But it’s still as magical as I remember it. Wait, there is a man who looks to be about my age standing in front of the building. He turns around, oh Lordy he’s tall.

“Hmmm may I help you”

I shake my head, the key in my hand trembling. Why is he here. As if hearing my thoughts he replies.

“I miss the owner of this old place, he was quiet kind to me as a child, as many were not, many still are not.” He runs his hand through his hair, “I’m quite sad that he’s been gone for three years, but that is neither here nor there, have a good night small one”

I look on as the man with jet black hair walks out into the next street and heads off. That was weird, he seemed nice though. If he knew my grandfather maybe he could be one of my customers!!! Wait no stop Yuu, you don’t even know if you want to even keep the building. I unlock the door. The lights are still in working condition, I set my suite case down and take off my coat, setting it on the nearest table.

“Mroaw?”

What was that?

“Mrrrrrrow”

A cat? I look back out the door into the street. There it is!

I rush out to pick up the poor thing, it’s scrawny and has a collar, it says “Grim.” The poor cat looks terrible with scars covering its body. I start to pet it’s head while bringing it back into the shop. A low content rumble comes from the cat. I look it over. Grim looks like it’s ears have been died blue. This cat has been abused. My stomach turns. There’s no clinic open this late. And I don’t have anything to give it. I haven’t even eaten yet. I search online for a local delivery place I can get food at, while Grim sniffs around. I find a small resultant called the Mostro Lounge. They accept take out orders late into the night. I ordered some stir fry from them. When the food arrives I set a plate full of meat for Grim on the floor. He sniffs it first before eating. He seems to be enjoying it, though I know take out is probably not great for cats, it’s the best I can do this late at night.

I look around the old ice cream shop. I really don’t want to sell it but… I need the money. But this is Grandpas place am I really go to let it go? I rember the strange man, he had found memories of this place. Maybe I could make people memories here to.

“Grandpa, your magic lives on I guess” I chuckle.

Bloom Into You Character Analysis- Sayaka Saeki

WARNING: This is super long and I had a really overlong paragraph noting this before deciding, like, it was a downer and totally unnecessary. So yeah, this is long and uses a mixture of text and images. Ones for Touko and Yuu should be coming shortly (The Touko one in a couple hours since it’s just me reposting, the Yuu one I’m making from scratch so it might take a bit more time.)

To really understand Sayaka, we have to go back in time a bit. To Sayaka’s time at Tomosumi Girl’s middle school. While there, one of Sayaka’s upperclassmen asked her out. She didn’t necessarily have a positive reaction at first, but she grew to love the other girl. 

When high school came, Sayaka’s was tortured when the girl that she loved seemed to not want to interact with her at all. As a result, Sayaka decided that she needed to take matters into her own hands. She assumed her senpai was suffering just as much as she was. 

Her upperclassmen didn’t share her feelings at all. If anything, she merely saw it as a sort of game that was was playing with Sayaka, not anything that she should take remotely seriously. It wasn’t a true relationship. She doesn’t ask Sayaka’s feelings about this, of course. She doesn’t even try to consider them. In her eyes, what she was saying was axiomatically true and that Sayaka would naturally agree. That she would still have the skepticism that plagued her at the beginning of her relationship before Sayaka realized how she felt.

Again, this is something that Sayaka thought at the beginning of their relationship, that it was something that was “weird”. Socially it’s not something that is done.

Sayaka felt like her feelings were real. She thought that her senpai was leading her somewhere beautiful and different and full of genuine, if seemingly unusual, love. The pain that she felt as a result was quite real. It must have hurt so much. 

So she tries to convince herself, as a coping mechanism, that her senpai is totally right. That was just a meaningless phase, and that girls simply didn’t love other girls. Everything that she felt was fake; if it was fake, then why was the girl she “loved” so blithely turn her down, after opening her to this possibility to begin with. The whole struggle did quite a bit of damage to her, to the point that she was so distracted that she got second place in the entrance exams. She is determined to be better than her, and surpass her in no time. 

And as she continued to convince herself, #1 herself walked by.

And in that one, shining moment, Sayaka’s feelings returned full force. And she decided that the feelings for Tokou… felt real enough, that she wasn’t going to necessarily let her broken heart deny that she seems to have them.

Time passes, as time often does, and Touko and Sayaka get closer. Due to the relationship that the two have, one that is rather close, the two become known as something of a power duo. 

Sayaka is seen as knowing Touko better than anyone else. In fact Sayaka says that herself, basically word for word, to Yuu. However, it is partially because she knows Touko better than most people that she keeps the other girl, emotionally, at arm’s length, and would never consider telling her friend about her feelings.

She’s somebody that knows that Touko, emotionally speaking, wants Sayaka to keep herself at arm’s length romantically, and thus on some level she does so emotionally as well, which I’ll get to in a bit. But instead, she decides to attempt to do what she can to protect her.

If she can’t be Touko’s love, she can at least do everything she can to make her safe and happy. She really is rather ambivalent about the stage show, but she gets that, for whatever reason, it’s something that Touko wants to do. And thus she considers it her responsibility to help, and pick up the pieces together if something goes wrong.

I think that’s enough context. Let’s jump into the show proper.

In the first episode, Sayaka is honestly pretty chill. She welcomes Yuu with, more or less, open arms, and is decently playful with Touko, the two having a relatively decent rapport. You get a slight hint of how well Sayaka really knows Touko with her certain declaration that Touko will turn everyone down, but by itself that doesn’t mean that much.

Then, in the rest of episode 1, the relationship between Yuu and Touko rapidly accelerates. Sayaka can kind of tell this, and it’s rather clear that she is not particularly happy about it. 

In this case, Touko manages to talk Sayaka down a little and get her to concede that it’s Touko’s choice at the end of the day, but you can see very clearly that Sayaka feels just a tad jealous. 

Jealousy is something that Touko doesn’t have in short supply of in regards to Yuu, as Sayaka demonstrates slightly low-key throughout the series, but most especially again in Episodes 6 and 7. The fact is that, I think on some level, Sayaka is a little scared. She’s already had to deal with one person moving on without her, deciding that their relationship isn’t truly worth much, and she feels like the same could easily happen with Touko too, especially when she’s too scared to confess, both for Touko’s sake and her own. 

]Her animosity to Yuu feels far more nuanced than petty jealousy, though. She doesn’t want anybody else getting close to Touko, she’s Touko’s protector and nobody else is allowed to be, because Touko is what she has, who she loves, and she can’t let what happened happen again. In my opinion, the jealousy in large part stems from fear.

Sayaka isn’t particularly important again until Episode 7, but this is where her character starts to shine, and she becomes much more relevant to the story. So let’s dig into this. 

The episode begins with Touko beating Sayaka on a pop quiz. Someone teases Sayaka because she continually can’t beat Touko (just like when they first met, she’s always #2), and this is her response. 

I actually see this as really important, but I think my point will be clearer if I save it for later. Just… keep it in your headspace. 

Later on in the episode, the Student Council is briefing their new recruit, Yuu’s friend Koyomi, about the stage show and, as a writer, what she could contribute, with Koyomi making it clear that for her, this is little more than writing practice.

As they talk however, their school supervisor Riko comes in, and between what Sayaka sees as slight moments of intimacy and Riko’s rather terrible attempts at damage control, she starts to suspect that the two are actually together. 

Later that night, she’s plagued by the thought of Yuu and Touko getting together, to the point that she’s actually shaking. Her fears consume her and she needs to go to the cafe and ask. Riko is doing other things but Miya is there, and so, after a bit of fumbling, Sayaka manages to ask what is on her mind, and Miya gives her a direct, clear affirmative, much to Sayaka’s shock. 

I think the shock could stem from a few things. I’m not sure it’s really gotten into Sayaka’s head that being gay is more than a teenage thing. Her first crush explicitly broke her heart by saying that it isn’t, and the only other relationship she really knew about was the Sayaka-Yuu-Touko mess, and all three of them were teenagers. In some ways, I think this was a good moment for her, to really understand that it is something that transcends age. It’s worth noting that her reaction when she starts to worry Miyako is going to say that she’s wrong and just seeing things that aren’t there looks genuinely pained.

The other reason for her surprise, one she actually tells Miya, is how direct she was. And Miya’s response is rather equally direct, and something that I think also really does impact Sayaka quite a bit. 

It’s worth noting that Sayaka operates in secrets. Her relationship with her senpai was a secret, she tries to keep her jealousy toward Yuu a secret, she tries to keep her feelings for Touko a secret. She’s somebody that simply isn’t very open about her feelings. That isn’t to say that she doesn’t often have very good reasons for that, but it is simply the world she knows, and she could easily think that it is really the possible only world when she has feelings like her’s. And part of the issue is that she actually takes it rather far. 

She is so desperate to conceal her feelings that she closes herself off. Not just to random admirers, not just to Yuu, but to herself and even to Touko. She isn’t somebody that allows herself to be herself, because she’s scared. She’s scared that it will scare Touko away, at the end of the day. And being told that not only is that something that is rather childish, but something that she simply doesn’t need to do, is something that I think really would mean something to her, even if she doesn’t say so or even realize it. 

The conversation then drifts to being about Sayaka, and Sayaka admits that she has a crush on Touko. And thus Miya asks a rather logical question- why does Sayaka like her in the first place? And, seemingly a little caught off guard at being asked, her first answer is rather superficial. It’s one that I’m sure is true (she was captivated by Touko the minute that she looked at her) but superficial all the same. But then, calming down a little, she expands. 

At the time, this in part seems to establish that Sayaka loves Touko for who she is as a “person”. Though the effort to achieve her goals driven by Touko’s pathologies at the end of the day. It is her desire to strive for more and achieve her goals that Sayaka loves, and not whatever those goals specifically are. But as we learn, so is the first thing that she mentions. No matter who she was trying to be, that is a complete failure to be Mio and is, simply, a different person entirely. Sayaka fell in love with Touko Nanami, and nobody less. 

The more I think about this bit, the more I think there’s a lot going on here. Immediate is that she genuinely is concerned about Touko; Sayaka shows quite a bit of knowledge into what Touko is like, but the idea that she has the full picture is ludicrously unlikely. She just knows that Touko doesn’t want to get close to people, and she knows that for whatever reason Touko is consumed (and tormented) by something. So she doesn’t want to make that worse, which is very admirable. 

I think there’s a bit of fear that is more personal too. Touko is somebody that Sayaka isn’t quite sure is gay; she thinks she might be, but doesn’t know for sure. And her previous relationship was her getting burned because the person she loved turned out to not be into girls after all, and I don’t think that’s something that she’s necessarily forgotten, and something that has been a big deal for her (even if it’s something she is getting ready to overcome). I think she also deeply is scared about being alone; it’s part of all her anxiety and jealousy over Yuu’s relationship; to her, the dreams of potentially being able to have relationship can feel essentially like all she has, and if she loses that, she has nothing.

But I think she kind of realizes something during this conversation. That it isn’t all she has. Touko is someone that she admires, someone she wants to support. She loves her, yes, but she wants to be a good supportive friend too. She wants to be someone Touko can depend on, can count on, and can bolster her strengths instead of weakening them. In a way, a path starts to open for her that she didn’t even really consider before. 

She struggles with the idea that maybe she’s been selfish by hiding everything from Touko like she has, but she gets politely assured that if anything it’s the opposite, and she’s being kind protecting her the way that she has. 

Cut to the next day. Sayaka gets second on another quiz. This time. The scene goes. Like this. 

The contrast to that little bit I suggested you remember from the beginning of the episode is ridiculously stark. Sayaka actually seems to have gained a competitive edge that she was completely lacking. And that’s in large part because she’s not just kind of hedging anymore, and has decided that though she loves Touko, and this absolutely is something she will tell her eventually, right now what is important is being a good friend to Touko. Do what she can to help her be happy, succeed, and excel. And this is how Touko responds to this.

I’m trying to imagine how much this must mean to Sayaka. She is trying to get stronger, learn to work with Touko as just a friend and set any baggage to the side, and Touko suddenly talks about how that is what she loves about Sayaka. That she’s a supportive friend, somebody that is always willing to have her back and help her do her best. She outright says that Sayaka helps her reach her ideal, something that Sayaka loves about her; that she continually strives to be the best she can be, and try to reach her goals. And Touko just outright said that she, Sayaka, was a huge part of why she tried to do that. And that it doesn’t need to be as a girlfriend, but just as a friend she cared about. 

Sayaka ends the episode with a parallelism of a sentiment from earlier, that some distance is okay for now. But they are fundamentally different sentiments. In that scene, Sayaka was talking about distance from Touko at all; just pining for her from afar, and clearly just not doing the best that she could to be a friend, not because she meant to, but because of baggage that she likely didn’t even realize she had. But now she is, to an extent, free from that. She can be better. She can be stronger, and she can grow, as somebody happy to consider herself (for now) Touko’s best friend.

Oh, did you think I was done? Nope! We’re only at Episode 8, baby. Let’s rock!

So Sayaka is waiting for Touko to arrive via train, and bumps into an old “friend.”

And she has things to say. Let’s walk through them.

Like, it’s worth remembering that Sayaka is the one that was tormented by this relationship for quite some time, to an extent probably still was well after she met Touko. It was in some respects a key formative moment for her, and something that she will in some regards probably always remember. 

And now the person that shot her down is basically taking all agency away from Sayaka entirely; it’s not that she agonized for months because of her own will and her own feelings, it’s not like the pain that she felt for so long after getting completely shot down and her feelings invalidated by somebody that she cared enough about to desperately try to convince herself that not only was this understandable but she was completely right to do so, until faced with a situation that simply made that sort of rationalization impossible, like, none of that was because of Sayaka. 

But it was all because she was tricked into a relationship and made to feel that way, by somebody who was able to treat it as nothing and blithely dismiss it when Sayaka desperately came to her for reassurance. Like in essence, not only is Sayaka being told that her feelings mean nothing because she didn’t truly feel them, not really, she’s being told that they mean nothing since they originate from someone who, as far as Sayaka can see, never cared that much for them in the first place.

I mean, strictly speaking the anime (and manga, I’d assume, since there’s a whole spinoff LN about it) doesn’t tell us that much about her mentality in middle school, but of Sayaka’s many, many insecurities, given that she constantly drives to be the academic and athletic equal to a self-made wunderkind, I’m not sure being “ordinary” is something Sayaka is particularly interested in being; if anything, given how her drive to succeed is one of the things Sayaka loves about Touko, it’s probably quite the opposite; that she especially likes people that she feels are extraordinary or try to excel. 

But setting that little bit of silliness aside, in many ways Sayaka is very, very different from the kid initially deeply hesitant in her own feelings. And in many ways is far better off for it; she’s certainly somebody with a drive and a purpose in her life, somebody that has found somebody she cares about and is willing to protect who does care about her in turn (if in a different way than she might like), she’s somebody that strives to do her best in everything she sets her mind to do, and often manages to accomplish that. She has her issues, plenty of issues, but many of them aren’t things the girl in front of her seems to understand at all, and if anything Sayaka would feel is responsible for. And they’re issue that she is often, slowly, trying to get better at, step by step. 

  But now the person that, in many ways, challenged and could have obliterated her very sense of self, is basically saying that that Sayaka is the one that matters, and the Sayaka that Sayaka has worked so hard to be, has put all her life into being, is “wrong” somehow, and that’s not something Sayaka would be particularly inclined to let go. 

Like, in many senses Sayaka is like Touko in that she is tied and fixated to a perception of herself in the past. But whereas Touko is somebody that can’t escape that self and refuses to even try, Sayaka would prefer, at this point, to simply make a clean break of it. 

And so Sayaka does, as grandly and personally as a person probably could do. And I think that honestly, Sayaka probably genuinely didn’t feel that way until Senpai had been done talking; at the very least, it was something that was solidified in her at that moment. After the person she loves more than anyone else talks specifically about how she appreciates her for who she is, flawed as that person might be, and how Sayaka actually manages to make Touko stronger as a result of all her concentrated effort, well, that isn’t much of a comparison to somebody that would tell her to her face that none of that was, in essence, her choice to begin with and she would rather that person not exist. 

Like the above moment when Sayaka says this Senpai is rather happy, even if it’s because she has the totally wrong impression of what Sayaka is trying to communicate. And I think that in many ways that’s the right reaction; at the end of the day, regardless of whatever feelings the two have, had, or may have had for each other, Sayaka just ending everything now and saying, in no uncertain words, that she simply wanted Senpai out of her life, is probably what is best for the both of them, Sayaka especially, given how cathartic it would be to finally, actually, be able to say that, to be able to actually get the last word to somebody that managed to render her speechless and break her heart. 

In fact, I want to note that she completes this with a genuinely intimate gesture. This is the sort of thing Sayaka seemed genuinely terrified to do in the past, she was somebody that was all about self-control and creating a firm barrier between her and Touko, but that barrier has pretty clearly broken down a little. Touko doesn’t particularly mind this- her issue isn’t Sayaka having feelings for her at all, but simply Sayaka trying to commit to and act upon them- which I’m sure was a bit of a shot, but also something of a relief.

So! Let us move on from the past and discuss the present. Now that there is less discord in the group over the nature of the performance, the primary issue is the oncoming track meet. And Yuu and Sayaka in particular seem to be having some problems working together. Yuu is the one that takes the initiative in trying to maybe mend some fences, but Sayaka freely chooses to reciprocate, with little animosity. 

The two then chat about their first impressions of each other, and then Sayaka just kind of quietly (and quickly) says 

Like, you get the impression that having gotten to know Yuu, she doesn’t dislike her. Not really. She may dislike that Touko likes her, she may dislike how she thinks Yuu feels for Touko, but now that she has sightly tempered her jealousy, her feelings toward Yuu as a person come across as decently amicable, and that’s not really something that changes in the rest of the show. 

In a way, more than anything, what seems to be operating as a barrier is the thing that neither of them particularly seemed interested in confronting up to this point; their respective feelings for Touko. Yuu raises the issue first, with Sayaka simply dismissing it, and Yuu does the same. And thus Sayaka ends up concluding…

That that’s where they are. Two rivals in love, even if neither is willing to strictly admit to the other, Touko, or, in Sayaka’s eyes, maybe themselves. And this conversation really does seem to help them; they don’t converse much until the next episode, but they unreservedly agree on the day of the Athletic Meet, and then during the meet itself

They actually manage to do what had been a struggle for them in the first place; get in sync enough to properly pass the baton. At heart, Sayaka’s problem, from watching the anime, isn’t animosity, both jealous and simply the two not seeming to understand each other, and not really being able to be themselves, and regardless of what they admit or don’t strictly admit, it’s clear to both of them, it seems, that that’s simply not a thing that is any longer true. 

And then there’s the bit at the camp before everything goes to hell.

This is actually a short scene but it might be worth talking about a main reason it’s probably here. Outside her final bit and the scene in 7 before she goes to talk to Miyako, this is, as far as I can tell, the only time Sayaka wears glasses in the entire show. It’s just not something that she does either at school proper or at the student council, or in any sort of casual capacity. She is of course, happy to do it in her own home, and evidently occassionally in front of Touko. It shows, to an extent, a weakness or flaw of her’s- nobody would judge her at all for being near-sighted, most probably, but it’s something that she feels holds her back, and she doesn’t want other people to see it, unless they’re people that on some level, she has some degree of comfort with. 

And Yuu is in the room too. She’s okay with Yuu also being in this moment, of seeing something that she lets very few people see, because she simply feels that Yuu isn’t somebody that she needs to hide her insecurities or weaknesses from, because on one level or another, they’re two people that understand each other. 

Things take a darker turn at the end of the night, with Sayaka thinking about how she wishes she could do something, but in the end she’s glad Yuu’s there, because as much as she loves Touko, she also loves what they have right now, that there is a time and place for those happy moments, and gets that potentially ruining everything simply isn’t what she wants. 

Of course, then everything goes to hell, as it does. 

After Touko breaks, Sayaka is not only able to quickly figure out that something’s wrong, but very quickly what happened, and even why it bothered Touko so much. 

And that’s simply because she’s somebody that does, on some level, get who Touko is, and many of Touko’s problems. She knew, after all, to look for the student council book of her sister in the first place even before Touko thought to hide ti. On some level Sayaka isn’t just attentive, but she’s somebody that gets Touko enough that trying to hide things from her… doesn’t really work.

And so, she decides on a plan, and a way to deal with Yuu.

And it’s pretty placid, as it goes. Unlike the last time she feels the need to make such a missive, she feels no need to make things personal and is simply calm and frank: Touko doesn’t want Yuu worrying about her, she’ll take care of this. And on some level it may be (okay is) a jealousy thing, in part this is simply a duty Sayaka has assigned herself and has always had for herself. If she can’t do it now, when she alone understands the problem, when she alone has the knowledge necessary to solve it, what purpose does she have, really? 

And, well, it doesn’t quite work out that well. And I think there’s a couple reasons for that. Number 1.

I think Sayaka gets quite a bit of what is going on with Touko at this point, and I think the point Sayaka is trying to make is one that Touko does really need to hear. But the larger issue is one that she’s simply missing partially because she doesn’t know about this part of Touko’s life, she only knows about Touko after she began her years-long performance and given that they both were continually trying to keep the other as emotionally distant as possible. That’s a distance Sayaka is trying to close right now, both as a friend and as somebody that loves Touko. But Touko is simply too closed off with that information at heart, and she simply doesn’t know enough about Touko’s life, the “real” Touko’s life, to really get at the core of the problem.

But I think there’s another fundamental one. It goes back to what is occurring with Touko being “better” for her in the long run”. Like, I’m entirely unconvinced that Sayaka really gets how completely self-destructive Touko is. She has rarely tried to really get close to Touko before, especially on these sorts of terms. It took Touko basically outright saying it to Yuu, someone who knows Touko on this level simply a lot better, to really figure out what the core issue is. 

Like, for somebody who sees Touko as somebody that always strives to do better at what she achieves, and excels, the two things she says she loves about Touko the most, the possibility that all this stems from Touko simply despising herself as a person is something that would be rather difficult for her to grasp, and rather understandably so. So her attempts just… don’t work, and it comes down to Yuu figuring out a way to improvise things, because she’s really the only one that can.

The rest of the final episode is pretty much all Touko and Yuu, but we do get one final shot of Sayaka at the end, reading something and then smiling. 

It’s kind of hard to say what that is exactly, it can’t be an edited script because we just saw Koyomi slaving away on it in a previous shot, but regardless it does seem like, for one reason or another, Sayaka has regained a bit of optimism about things, and a degree of determination which is all for the good.

Two-Prong Job Opportunity

Where Lavi helps people buy homes, Yuu helps them stay, and everything is only a little bit haunted.

AU Yeah August Day 10: Secret (real estate) Agents (DGM AU, LaviYuu, AlLena)

Shout-out to Zan, who will probably get a kick out of the setting.

They meet under the least fortuitous circumstances possible: Kanda Yuu, self-defense instructor extraordinaire, is looking for a new place because his last rental burned down under mysterious circumstances, and Lavi is doing his damned level best to unload Singapore's most haunted apartment onto this poor sod.

"As you saw, yeah, we are super close to the train station, and there's a food court 'nd a shopping centre within 15 minutes' walk. 's a really good deal, the rent's a fraction of what you'd expect for a 2 bed 1 and a half bath in this location. Th'owner wants someone to look after the place while they're away for a long work placement, which is why they're lettin' it rent for so little. All in all, 's a fantastic deal, I can't recommend it enough!" Lavi goes all on one breath, dripping charm out of every pore and hoping it covers the unsettling atmosphere of the place.

Yuu goes to look out the fabulous floor to ceiling windows for a view of the lush park nearby, perfect for unwinding (!). Clearly unimpressed, he turns to look around the living area, brow furrowed as he looks for..... something.

"If you're looking for the half bath, it's just through here," Lavi says, heading to the little door by the hallway for the rooms, but he is stopped mid-track by a scoff so intense it sounded a bit like a fit. "Uhm... Are you all right?"

At this point, Yuu has migrated to a corner of the room, right by the window, expression not dissimilar to a seasoned home-owner spotting black mold on a prospective property. "The fuck."

Hard same, Lavi does not say. "Excuse me?"

"This place has so many damn entities it's a miracle you're not co-possessed by," Yuu breaks off, lips moving as he counts Lord knows what just over Lavi's shoulder, "3 unhappy spirits and at least 1 lesser demon."

"Oh," Lavi says a little faintly, looking down at the goosepimples that have plagued his arms since he set the key to the lock of this cursed apartment. "Is that what that is?"

Yuu irritatedly slaps at nothing by his face, and Lavi tries really hard to convince himself he didn't hear a gross squelch from the sound of one hand clapping. "This place is so fuckin' cursed," he calmly asserts as the walls start to seep blood. "But there's a gas stove and the commute isn't shit, so I'll take it."

"That's grand," Lavi replies with a manic grin.

Overhead, the ceiling lights all simultaneously explode, and the worst, absolute worst thing is Yuu looking up, clicking his tongue, and going "I was going to change the bulbs to something whiter anyways, so thanks, idiots," to absolutely nothing.

Later, when Yuu comes over to Lavi's office to go over the lease agreement, is when Lavi finds out that Yuu is the distillation of over 600 years of Shinto priesthood and ancient Shamanism, leaving Yuu with bubbling-over Holiness and a crystal clear connection to the spiritual world that means that occasionally an ancestor from Ancient Japan will physically manifest and complain about his lack of respect.

It's a hell of a story, and one Lavi is predisposed to suspect, but Yuu knows so many things about him that are literally unknowable that it becomes hard to deny.

Plus, after clearing a month in the cursed apartment, Lavi is inclined to believe in Yuu and his supernatural powers.

"Spirits either are like humans or they aren't," Yuu had half-assedly explained during a follow-up phone conversation. "The nature spirits and elemental djinns all don't cause any problems, the dicks are always past humans. And dead or alive, there's always a way to deal with people."

Lavi will later find out that The Way according to Yuu is through Force, and he knows this to be the case after witnessing Yuu lay out a ghost-man doused in oil with a punch, before exorcising him with a frying pan to the face and a truly ferocious chant. The slick black coating melts off the prone body, and all that's left is a naked Singaporean man with the imprint of a cast-iron pan on his face.

Behaving like this is the most normal thing in the world, Yuu hauls the unconscious body out out of his flat, and stashes him in the fire escape.

"Third orang minyak this week," Yuu says with disgust. "Why people keep getting boners over that pontianak banshee woman living on the balcony is a goddamn mystery, but they need to leave me the fuck alone. Now, here's the ceiling light that keeps flickering so much that I told you about. This one isn't ghosts, just shitty wiring."

"I'll get someone right on that, yeah," is what Lavi says, as a Very Good Idea starts forming in his head.

"-so that's the plan. What d'you think?" Lavi is a little excited, because it's a rare case of a win-win situation for all involved.

Yuu raises a pretty, sceptical brow. "Sounds illegal as hell."

"Consider this though. The government might be able t'get you for chewin' gum while out 'nd about, but there sure isn't a law for th'lifeless." Probably. Singapore can be just a little too good at coming up with laws to enforce sometimes.

Yuu takes another minute to mull it over, before he shrugs. "Fine. Exorcism's just self defense against demons anyways."

And this is how their 2-step process to benefit the discerning home-buyers of Singapore starts.

Step 1: Introduce people to low-cost housing that is low-cost by virtue of being mad haunted. Today Lavi brings a cute young couple to a beautiful, modern little apartment in the Jurong area. The rent is absurdly cheap for a large loft-style apartment in this district, but on the other hand, sometimes a small ghost child climbs into bed with you to whisper little secrets, so it's a give-and-take.

The woman seems interested; it's close to her workplace, and there's a lovely, sprawling park nearby. "It's perfect, Allen!"

The man's a British transplant who works at the casino at Marina Bay Sands, though he's a little bit quiet on what exactly his job entails. He looks deeply uncomfortable with the place, but looks even more unhappy at the prospect of turning down his girlfriend. "The rent's really fair and the train's awfully close, Lena, but doesn't this place feel a little..."

"A little?" asks the woman, taking Allen's concerns seriously but also wearing the expression of someone willing and able to KO most of the obstacles the world lays in her path.

"Uhm..... Haunted-y. Doesn't it just give you the creeps?"

She shakes her head, obviously not sensing anything. "Feels just fine, but if it feels off for you then we can look at some other places?"

But the rent is fantastic and the location is amazing and the facilities are unbeatable. Lavi can see defeat in the man's eyes, and puts into motion his plans.

"The owner's willing t'let you rent on a month-to-month basis, yeah, if you'd like to try it out. 'nd if there's anythin' that bothers you, you can call me, or m'associate," Lavi says, handing over his special business card, the one printed with Yuu's details attached. "How's about y'give it a go, but you can call us if anything happens?"

"We'll give it a think," Lenalee says, smiling brightly.

A week later, they move in.

And a week and a half later, Lavi gets a phone call at 1 in the morning, and it's Allen on the line, unbearably polite even in the face of poltergeist activity and the wee hours of the morning.

"-and I almost was brained by a decorative vase that kept flying for me. Please do, uhm, send help, because I think my girlfriend's about to pick a fight with the entity, and I'm not sure she'd lose, which might be the most terrifying thing."

Lavi's pulling on a pair of sweats before he hangs up, and he's contacted Yuu and given him the details before he's out the door.

Time to find out if they can actually make this work!

Lavi arrives just after Yuu, who meets him in the lobby of the quite posh apartment building. The security officer's been told to let them up and in, and it's almost 2 by the time a harried Allen opens the door for them. "It's terrible," he whispers, and they have to lean in close to hear him over the din of furniture smashing. "She keeps alternating between kicking things and telling the ghost thing to just calm down so that they can work through this together. I tried making them both a cup of tea, and that somehow made them both even worse." Allen leads them in, to the small kitchen area with a steaming pot resting on a little cloth doily on the breakfast bar. "Speaking of, would either of you fancy a late-night cuppa? Kettle's just gone."

Yuu had headed straight for the commotion in the living room, where Lenalee is smashing throw pillows out of the air while admonishing the entity. Lavi heads for the kitchen, because the promise of a hot drink is more enticing. "Don't worry 'bout a thing, yeah. Yuu's a crazy powerful exorcist, 'nd soon you'll have a super lovely rent-controlled apartment wholly clear of ghosts. Just wondering though, how come you're so calm? Usually clients are, mmm, screamier."

Allen calmly pours out their drinks, and manages to snag a couple of sugar cubes before the little container is ripped out of his hands, heading right for Yuu's head. Yuu ducks, and it smashes against a wall, sugar raining down on all of them. "Oh dear, this is how you get ants." Allen sighs before he get around to Lavi's question. "It's my girlfriend. I swear she's always attracted to places that have ghosts. Our last place had a classic massive hooded figure that liked to show up behind us when we're looking at ourselves in the mirror. But after she talked it out of being a creep and leaving messages in blood on the kitchen counter, it ended up being a decent sort. We had to leave when they tore the building down to make way for a train line, but it waves sometimes when we pass close by on the MRT." Allen takes a sip. "First time dealing with a poltergeist, though. Nasty little bugger, looks like."

"M'self, I don't have much experience with ghosts, yeah, but Yuu KO'd a hell of a bastard at his place, so we decided t'get into this." Lavi ducks down to avoid a whizzing shoe, raising his voice over the din of Yuu scream-shouting an incantation that leaves his hair on end. "Thought it'd be great if I could rent out great place f'cheap to people who need 'em, then have Yuu clean it out for an exorcism fee, 'nd we'd all be laughin'."

There is an inhuman shriek, and the apartment is plunged into darkness.

"Motherfucker!" Yuu howls, glowing electric blue with pure Holy power.

"I'm not laughing now," Allen says miserably.

By 11 AM, they're having brunch out on the lovely balcony. Lenalee had popped out to buy them some rotis, and Allen is really, terribly good at making coffee art.

Lavi sips on a beautifully rendered kitten latte, and takes stock of the events of the past few hours. It took a couple of hours of much shouting and kicking things out of the air before Yuu thought to deify the kitchen tap and drench every corner of the apartment.

They found the talisman hissing in the holy water hidden under a loose floorboard, and Yuu somehow set it on fire using his damned mind. The supernatural occurrences had died down immediately, though it had taken Yuu a good couple of hours after to shake off the Holy Static messing up his hair.

It's been a hell of a night, but it's also shown that their business model works. Allen and Lenalee now are proud occupants of a lovely, decidedly non-haunted apartment, Lavi got his commission and new clients, and Yuu is suitably reimbursed for saving lives and souls. It's a win-win-win, and ain't that a smack in the face for modern capitalism, eh?

"I think," Allen says, breaking the comfortable silence, "I think the exorcism side of your operation really could really do with a better-looking business  card."

"Yeah?" Lavi thinks this sounds like a fantastic idea. "Somethin' like, who're you gonna call-"

Haikyuu Fic Recs!

So I’m going to premise this rec list by saying that I like fics on the long-side so if you’re looking for short one-shots, you might not find what you’re looking for in this list. I’m not a huge fan of angst (although that doesn’t mean there isn’t any in this list, just not a lot), I enjoy smut ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) , I like a fair few rarepairs and I like to think that I’m extremely picky when it comes to how something is written, pacing etc. I’ve read all the fics in this list multiple times, they are definitely my all-time favourites. I organized these as best as I could and included the rating, word count and summary from the author for each.

Come Downstairs – Teen – 50K - Akaashi Keiji is pretty certain that he’s got love figured out. Or at least, he’s figured out that love isn’t for him. It isn’t until his new downstairs neighbor moves in that he realizes even intelligent people make mistakes in their calculations.

♡ Give Me – M – 22K – Akaashi is quite sure of who he wants, but this is Bokuto. This needs time, tact, and timing to get there /without/ blundering. (Also if you’re looking for a Fukuroudani team fic, this is it. I love this team, I had so much fun writing all the characters and interactions within and towards Nekoma. I just love the fucking owls so much okay).

Knock On Wood – Gen – 9K - He was awake again, his mind leaving the stage it had briefly slipped into, and he sat up slowly, ignoring his protesting muscles. Something about the knock sounded so familiar- the timing, the precision with which each hit sounded against the wall and resonated in his skull, the sequence of the taps. When it did click in his brain, Bokuto’s eyes widened in shock. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t recognized it sooner, couldn’t believe he was hearing it after all this time. The knock was morse code, and the message was exceptionally simple- all it said was a simple, recurring Hello.

Spending all, spending all my time (loving you) – Gen – 3K - The fastest speed ever recorded for a volleyball serve is 82 mph by the Bulgarian professional Matey Kaziyski. Bokuto’s own serve is around 75 mph on a good day. The stranger in the empty concrete lot behind Bokuto’s apartment building receives 72.4 mph of volleyball with the side of his head. In which Bokuto Koutarou plays volleyball at university, and Akaashi Keiji is a dimension traveller.

Tea Stained Polaroids – Gen – 5K – “I’m gonna date that,” Bokuto declares solemnly, and Kuroo throws a plastic spoon at his head.

♡ Cracks In The Pavement Will Lead You Home – M – 12K - Bokuto often thinks about Akaashi, especially when he’s running. It’s like his legs know where they’re supposed to take him. He grows into a habit of running a lot, just to keep that feeling going. Cracks and holes in the pavement aren’t fun to jump over if the final reward isn’t seeing Akaashi’s face. An alternate universe with a little bit of magic and a lot of growing up.

What Are The Chances? – E – 60K – Akaashi Keiji is a figure skater, and has been skating since he was a child. However, due to family issues, he’s often tasked with taking care of his adorable nephew, Shouyou, and doesn’t really see himself as one that has the time or desire for relationships. But when Shouyou runs off and leads him to a hockey player named Bokuto Koutarou, for some reason his heart stops and he can’t keep himself from thinking about him.

Nervous around his coworkers and terrified of the long drop on the other side of the window, Asahi falls into a miserable routine, only to have it broken one day by a simple message on the outside of the glass. ♡ Vienna Waits For You (WIP) – M – 125K - “It was the day before Nishinoya Yuu’s twenty-second birthday, and he had never been more convinced that he’d reached the end of the better part of his life.” A story about losing many things, finding some of them again, and realizing the rest wasn’t really lost after all.

The Chronicles of the Virgin Asahi – E – 88K - Asahi wants the earth to swallow him whole when he accidentally crashes into tiny Nishinoya Yuu while riding his bike. He remains unsure of his stance on disappearing off the face of the planet after Noya asks him out on a date. But with the (somewhat aggressive) encouragement of his best friends/roommates, Asahi takes one small step forward, and soon finds himself doing a lot less hiding and a lot more living than he ever thought he could.

Stoplights (on hiatus unfortunately) – E – 48K - Welcome to Yamaguchi Tadashi’s sexual awakening. Kindly leave your expectations at the door.

Shooting Stars and Satellites – M – 14K - Tsukishima moves to Tokyo for university, and Yamaguchi stays in Miyagi. Four years later, they see each other again.

RAREPAIR/MISC

♡ In Good Faith We Swap Our Aces  – Various Pairings – 15k - So many questions. Will Oikawa break down first, or Akaashi? Is Bokuto the bigger alien, or Ushiwaka? Who really sent a lamb for slaughter - Daichi or Kuroo? Are bonds being made or broken? What exactly is Karasuno scheming? What kind of purpose is this activity meant to achieve? And just who does this sort of arrangement please?

Not For Sale – Kuroo/Tsukki – M – 19K – Kei’s faced him plenty of times shoulder-to-shoulder or on the other side of the volleyball net; never for any other reason, and never in his very private, very carefully planned, safe time away from the court. Nevertheless, he took Kuroo’s hand and smiled bitterly, finding comfort in the sole fact that his summer couldn’t possibly get any worse.

True Ending – Mattsun/Makki – M – 12K - He never really questioned the handsy nature of their friendship, it was just something that felt normal after falling asleep on a tiny couch while watching movies too many times. Who was Hanamaki to say no to cuddles with someone he considered his best friend? The fact that Matsukawa was always a bit cute in the wee hours of the morning was just something Hanamaki would have to file away in the back of his mind.

Boiled Frogs – Mattsun/Makki – E – 91K - They’ve always been really close friends, but Hanamaki begins to question how close when Matsukawa begins dating someone else - someone else that doesn’t treat him well. When he suspects that Matsukawa may be in an abusive relationship, Hanamaki realizes that opening his best friend’s eyes to his situation may be harder than he had ever anticipated. (Pretty angsty, happy ending.)

It’s Cold Out There – Mattsun/Makki – M – 8K - Seijoh’s parties are always a mess, but this one takes the cake.

♡ Hearts of Gold – Komi/Sarukui – M - 63K - Komi goes to Fukuroudani academy with high hopes. He wishes for a fresh start and to concentrate fully on volleyball, not on his newfound sexuality. This quickly goes down the drain when he meets Sarukui Yamato. Setting his feelings aside, Komi wants to be friends with Sarukui, even when his feelings go haywire when they’re close. (Set in first year)

Into The Battlefield With a Flower Bouquet – Komi/Saukui – M – 14K - Komi likes to take naps, and Sarukui isn’t here for that. When the growing conflict between them drives Komi to challenge Sarukui to a fight, it’s up to the other Fukuroudani first years to make them stop. Then Shirofuku Yukie has an idea. (Set in first year)

♡ Rewrite the Rulebook – Ukai/Takeda – E – 100K - “Karasuno needs a coach.” Takeda knows what the volleyball team needs, and he’s determined to get it at all costs. Ukai is prepared to resist but he’s not prepared for Takeda.

Mixed Signals – Kyoutani/Yahaba – Teen – 7K - Feelings are definitely a thing he’s having. Kyoutani is really sweet. He’s family oriented and he prefers novels with female leads and he’s in all honors classes. He kind of has a big head, totally has a big smile, definitely has a big heart. His eyes are nice, he’s got that dimple. Yahaba groans and rubs his fists into his eyes.

Do Unto Others – Kindaichi/Kunimi – Teen – 10K - Over time, Kunimi has realized he really likes having Kindaichi look after him.

♡ Just The Three of Us – Kageyama/Kindaichi – Gen, Teen, E – 21K - This is the story of the Kitagawa Daiichi trio: how they came together, how they fell apart, and how they found each other again. (5 Parts)

Two-hundred and sixteenth letter received

A sequel to Letter two hundred and sixteen, it’s a bucket of angst

This is my first long fic. I’m a bit nervous. I hope you all like it!

5:00 AM

*BEEP* *BEEP* BEEP* All too soon the familiar, shrill tone of my alarm jolts me out of my sleep. Getting out of bed is always hard. But day by day, it just gets harder. A few months ago I’d still be fast asleep at this time. I’d be curled up next to him. I sigh.

My room is a mess, I can barely find my uniform in the clutter. I see it wadded up in a corner. I must have thrown it over there last night. I’m too exhausted these days to worry about keeping anything neat. I grab it, giving it a quick shake. It’s wrinkly and slightly dirty, but it doesn't really matter. Its not like I'm working around celebrities and the high class anymore. I laugh, “I cant even begin to imagine anyone from the IVC, ever stepping a foot in the motel.” When I left the Tres Spades I grabbed a train, not giving a damn where it went, just so long as it was far away. And that’s how I ended up here. It’s a small town, almost painfully small, despite having a university nearby. I work at one of the two motels here. Unfortunately, it’s the infinitely more seedy establishment. It’s often used as a rest stop for bikers, and wanderers. Those who wish to forget their stories. I guess I fit then. I work as a maid there. Of course. It’s hard to escape the past I guess.

 I look around as I get dressed. My eyes land on the group of photos on my dresser. The first is one of Chiasato, Sakiko and I, our arms are around each other. We’re at a our favorite band’s concert, all decked out in merchandise, grinning our fool heads off. The second is a snap shot of Ota, Baba and I. In it I’m frowning with my arms crossed, though it’s obvious I’m trying not to laugh. Baba and Ota are both covered in paint, making a mess of epic proportions. I get a head ache even thinking about it, the cleaning took hours. At least Eisuke…At least he made them help me clean, although Ota complained the entire time. That brings me to the third of the group. My eyes trail over the turned over frame. I don't have to look at it to know exactly what’s there. It’s evening. The sunset coats the rooftops, painting Eisuke and I in vibrant colors. We’re at one of the thousands of parties he used to take me to, I can’t say who hosted it, all I know is that we were on the rooftop of some important business building.  We were waltzing, I was doing it poorly, but he made up for it. Of course he was an amazing dancer. As we danced it felt like it was just him and me in the world. Like we were infinite. But It was one of the last times I felt close to him, before the break up. This picture marked the beginning of the end for us. i honestly don't know why I don’t just throw the picture away. I can handle all the other photos of the bidders and my friends at the Tres Spades, but, I don't know…this one is just especially painful, and yet, I still can’t bear to part with it. With him.

He’s still got his hold on me.

Why can’t he just let me go?

Doesn’t he know that those letters are a constant reminder of what is lost?

Of what can’t be fixed?

It hurts.

All I want it to forget. I swallow loudly. My heard hurts.

My stomach rumbles, breaking me out of my painful reverie. I plod over to the kitchen and make myself some coffee. It’s funny, I was never fond of the taste, but recently I’ve been craving it.

Leaning sleepily against the counter, I wait for the caffeine buzz to kick in. I hear the soft patter of feet as my roommate, Suzu, walks in looking just as tired as I feel. We share a quick nod of acknowledgement. I wonder idly as I stir the remnants of my coffee, if the exhaustion is from pulling an all-nighter studying, or from a hang over. I don’t know. We don’t talk much. One might think that we would get along famously, after all, I’m only a little bit older than her. But we just don’t. It’s not that we hate each other or anything. She’s not awful by any means, but she’s just content with her school friends, and I’m swamped with work. As I watch her groggily pour herself cereal and grab a cup of coffee, I find myself, not for the first time, missing my old life. I miss Sakiko and Chiasato. I even miss Erika and the twins. I miss having a place where people care to ask how I am, or even remember my name. The staff at the motel is certainly not as tight knit as the Tres Spades. The closest thing I have to a work friend there is Shika who works the front desk, and even then, it’s pushing it to call her a friend. All I know about her is that she just showed up in town one day -like me- got a job at the motel, and she's been there ever since. But that was ages ago.

Shika isn’t much of a talker, she's really fiercely private. It took me weeks to even learn her first name, and I still don’t even know her last name! I guess I should count myself lucky to know her backstory at least.

Suzu’s voice breaks me out of my train of thought. “Hey, I’ve been meaning to ask, who’s the person who sends you a letter everyday? I see you get a letter written on the same stationery everyday, but you always return them.”

I’m slightly surprised, “You noticed that, huh?

She leans back on the counter grabbing what seems to be her second cup of coffee.

“Late night?” I ask.

She shrugs “Paper due, anyways, what’s the whole deal?”

“It’s…..complicated.”

“Well who ever it is, and whatever the situation may be, you should at least answer once, maybe it’ll make them stop. When ever I check the mail I always think its either my pay check or taxes, I can’t handle the emotional rollercoaster, and from the looks of of it, you can’t either” She looks at me as she takes a sip of her coffee, looking contemplative.

“Hey, doesn’t your shift start soon?” she asks.

I look at the clock, 5:30 AM, “SHIT!”

She chuckles “Same.”

I shoot her a thankful grin.

SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!! Why the hell I signed up for the 6′o clock shift on a Saturday after working the late night shift Friday, I don’t know. Forgoing any sort of substantial breakfast, I quickly drain the rest of the lukewarm coffee from my mug.  a I sprint out the door, barely managing to remember to grab my house keys. I continue my frantic sprint all the way to the motel.

When I finally arrive, completely out of breathe. My legs are coated with dust from sprinting down the dirt caked road. I make a quick job of dusting my self off. I once again sigh. “I’m really a mess aren’t I?”  Right before I open the door I hear the low grumble of a man’s voice.

“Hey hun, you all right? Some body chasin’ ya? Saw you kickin’ up a dust storm. Do you need me t’be your shining knight?” The unknown man says with clear amusement. I turn around to see my “savior”, “Piss off Arata”

“Ay, not harm no foul, so cool it, babe,” his cocky smirk makes me want to punch him in the face. He’s like a small town Baba, only without the looks, and charm. Just double the punch-ability. Arata is one of my other co-workers, and I only have one maybe work friend, and it sure as hell isn't him.

“Whatever, just leave me alone, and take your smoke break. Also, it’s 5:55 AM, why the hell do you need a smoke break already?”

“It’s never too early for a smoke break sweetheart,” he grins as he takes a drag of his cigarette, leaning against the wall of the building.

I shudder, pushing the door open. Shika is there at the front desk, reading a magazine unconcernedly. While you would be scolded at the Tres Spades for such behavior, nobody here really gives a damn.

“You just made it in time. Manager left already, he gave me this list to give to you,” she says, not looking up from the magazine.

“He’s gone already?”

She looks up and gives me a knowing look.

The owner and manager Yuu, was infamous for day drinking. And drinking in general to be honest.

“You know, he has to get an early start to fit it all in.”

She chuckles, and hands me the list.

“Thanks,” I say as I take the paper.

“Uh huh,” she gives me an noncommittal grunt, already absorbed in the magazine again.

I sigh once more, and look at the task list. First off, laundry. Looking at the mountain of soiled bedsheets and towels, covered with stains I don't even want to begin to imagine the origins of, I think to myself “One thing is for sure, I sure as hell downgraded work wise.” And I soon get to work.

After a ten hour shift fending off creepy guys trying to hit on me, attempting to make conversation with Shika, and bearing the brunt of Arata’s bullshit, I can finally go home. I make the trek back, thankfully not having to sprint the way there.

Suzu is sitting on the doorstep reading a book when I get back. She looks up and sees me.

“Hey, long day?” she asks as she stretches up.

“I’m used to it. What’s up?”

“Not much, just trying to catch up on reading,” she frowns, “and it’s dreadfully boring. Oh and by the way, mail’s here,” she holds up the mail, and there it is. That familiar expensive stationary.

“Here,” she tosses it to me, “and remember what I said this morning. And I know we don’t talk a whole lot, but I’m here if you need to talk to someone,”

“Okay, and thank you. I’ll remember that,” I smile and I walk past her to go inside. She returns to her book.

“Good luck with that,” I gesture to her book.

“Yeah, and you too,” she grins back at me.

I make my way back to my cluttered room. I throw the letter on the desk as I slump down. I’ve been doing this everyday. Every damn day. For two hundred and sixteen days. Closing my eyes, I rest my head on the desk. Suzu’s words echo in my head. I really should deal with this. But I’m afraid. I’m afraid of getting the answer to the questions I ask myself every night

“Why didn’t you try harder to stop me?”

“Why didn't you follow me when I left?”

“Did you stop loving me?”

“Because I never stopped loving you Eisuke.”

I sit up. I take a deep breath, and I reach for the letter. This letter won’t return unread.
