Here's a small cross over question, if Steve and Billy end up trapped in the Upside Down and somehow time stops, they're preserved at their teenage years, like Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes in ice, then they make it to today's time as teenagers still, I know its not a huge gap like the 40s to 2010s gap, but if you think about the social changes (some places 🙄) between the 80s and 2010s, how'd they react? Favourite things, things they struggle with, etc, etc...I'm here for the long haul.

I think they both would be very confused about the acceptance of LGBTQIA+, and the terms. It would give them an opportunity to further explore their sexualities and gender identities though, because acceptance of something you've been told for years is an abomination is sooo liberating.

Pronouns. Now, in English class we are taught pronouns, and Billy would probably just say "See, Harrington? I told you school doesn't teach you everything!" The way he sees it, the new gen is expanding what standard textbooks taught.

Billy would be excited to see a man wearing the same shade of lip gloss as him, sporting pierced ears and nail polish. He admires the way the man walks with confidence and purpose, and he tells Steve he wishes he could have that same confidence.

On the topic of openness... which goes hand in hand with toxic masculinity ( a truly suffocating thing), I'm going out on a limb and saying that they aren't used to this wave of therapy, and communication, or being in touch with your feelings.

But this means that they can try things that were forbidden back in their time. Dabble in painting, fashion, makeup... the possibilities are endless.

Now, going by canon, assuming Robin was an old friend (maybe she's a black widow in this crossover?) Steve isn't a stranger to same sex relationships.

Billy however probably didn't know much about his preferences with partners, only that it "was wrong" (shitty times 😒), and his father being a trashy h*m*ph*be, he's understandably a lot more cautious about this- he's relatively new to the conversation. But he's curious, and he's eager to learn more about himself. He has a lot of unlearning to do.

They would probably bitch about how everything is so much more expensive (like the movies, gas, etc).

Steve would want to embrace this new world, and enroll in classes to learn about what he's missed.

Billy wants to be open to learning, but his first concerns would be to find Neil. To find Max. Steve probably realized they were in a different time before he did, because all Billy could think about was Max.

Neil is six feet under, and Max is like 52 (I'm bull with math so 😃🔫). Married with Lucas, and they have kids.

Now that Neil is dead, Max and Billy can really fix their sibling bond. Of course Max is a lot older physically, so it's challenging because Billy is still preserved. So Max is more matured, but seeing Billy brings back the childishness she lost when she thought he died.

She and Lucas help him and Steve out with settling down. Steve wants to move in together, and for Billy, old habits die hard. He's still looking over his shoulder.

Of course the other members of the Party are contacted, and they greet both Steve and Billy with happy tears and disbelief. Dustin would be the first to believe their odd story, while the others would be skeptical.

Steve finds out that Nancy is really sick (she's basically Peggy Carter) and he's torn between past feelings for her (even though she married Jonathan 💀) and whatever feelings he has for Billy.

Billy would struggle with speeding, and racks up tickets like you wouldn't believe. He doesn't have patience for traffic, or student drivers. They both have to renew their licesenses and documents in general. Billy gets his license revoked within ten minutes of renewal.

Steve stays by Nancy's bedside, and Billy tries to be understanding. He tries to keep busy around their shared aparrntment. He attends family therapy with Max and Lucas, and has since decided on getting a therapist focusing on him specifically (it was Max's idea). Billy has a lot to unpack, and therapy can get draining.

Especially because Lauren, his therapist, tends to dig deeper than he's ready for, which sets him off. He doesn't like to be pushed to open up, and she doesn't understand that. He doesn't want to let Max down, though. The way he sees it, its payback for how he treated her, and he's a wuss, like his father said. He should be able to take some stranger poking around his past. And he has a lot of making up to do (his opinion). So he sucks it up, even though he cries at night (that is when he does manage to have a peaceful night's sleep).

When you don't sleep you get extra moody, and Billy falls victim to mood swings. He lashes out at Steve, who should just kick him out on the street and turn his back on him like everyone else has.

Billy eventually gets a new therapist after Steve gets pissed for him and gives Lauren a piece of his mind- which is a new concept for Billy. Usually people are pissed at him. Its kind of nice.

Steve wants to try new flavors of ice cream (he thorough regrets it, because he's just found out he's lactose intolerant).

When Nancy dies, Billy is there by his side, the way Steve has been since they woke up in 2017.

There are two beds in their apartment, and a pull out couch, but they always sleep together. It'd to the point where one cannot sleep if the other isn't close.

Billy thrives without Neil, truly thrives, and he's smiling more. He's learning to communicate when he feels down, or if he doesn't feel comfortable with something.

Steve still takes care of the Party, only he's not the old one anymore. They get stared at when they go out together, but Billy just stares right back at the judgemental pricks until they look away.

They go to theme parks (the "kids" always find a way to get Steve and Billy together somehow) and the Party brings their kids.

Billy is a little skittish around the little ones (he's not sure what their parents have told them about him) but once Mike and Wills four year old daughter Diana (a shy, quiet girl) takes his hand and tugs him to play a carnival game, he grows less uncomfortable, allowing himself to live in the moment. Especially because he can tell Mike is annoyed by the fact that Diana likes him more.

Steve has the freedom to look at Billy without having to be afraid for both of them. His pining is more obvious (just not to an equally whipped Billy).

They are men out of time, and they have all the time in the world.

Mad Max annoyingly reminds Billy, however, not to wait too long.

Billy insists Steve is just being... Steve. Sooner or later he will come to his senses, and kick Billy to the curb.

Steve has no intention of abandoning him, though. Because he's with him till the end of the line (I couldn't resist)

As efforts to control books continue in Tennessee, a library in Nashville is pushing back with a bold new campaign: A card that says "I read banned books."

The Nashville Public Library is issuing 5,000 of the limited-edition cards — printed in bright yellow — to readers in Davidson County for close to a month.

Reluctant Reader Wednesday: Loveless by Alice Oseman 

Georgia loves the idea of romance, and she wishes that she could make that special connection with someone. But after kissing her longtime crush turns into a disaster, she thinks that maybe she’s just not meant for love. It’s not until she gets to college that she learns more about all of the ways that LGBTQIA+ people can identify, and she discovers that she fits into a category that many people can’t understand. But just because her life is complicated doesn’t mean that love is impossible.

Give this book to teens and adults who are interested in learning more about asexual/aromantic people, and any readers who love stories about characters learning to discover the truth about themselves.

When Nave heard books were being challenged in school libraries across the country—a movement that eventually hit his own district—he got angry and started talking to his friends. Nave is part of a growing trend of teens responding to book challenges by creating banned book clubs.

They read books that have been historically banned, as well as the ones currently being challenged, and talk about how social context influences censorship. The clubs have become a way for students to make their voices heard in a debate usually dominated by adults. They are run through schools, bookstores, and teen centers across the country, including in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

But Harry doesn’t know any of this. So when he sees Malfoy in a shop of charmed necklaces, he immediately tries his best to uncover Malfoy’s machinations.

We asked 15 individuals about their experiences being/learning about LGBTQIA+ in school and these were the responses:

Why We are Fighting for LGBTQIA+ Education

Queer children exist, regardless of your personal beliefs or experiences. It should not make you uncomfortable to teach or learn about LGBTQ+ topics. We asked 15 people both in and out of school, ages ranging from 17 to 25, an array of questions to get a general idea of how the education system approached queer topics in NSW, Australia.

Students currently still in the NSW education system have stated that these topics are being barely glossed over awkwardly by teachers. It is not fair on our queer children to think they are not normal and should feel othered by the way our schools are teaching them. One student in particular had stated: “We shouldn’t have debates about queer rights. I shouldn’t have to sit and class and know who would happily have rat me out and had me killed or thinks I should hate myself for being authentic. LGBTQIA+ rights are human rights.”(Anon).

Why is is Important

The education system needs to be aware that cis-gender, heterosexual people are not the default. Inclusive topics addressing both same sex and different sex relationships in the same section is important as to not differentiate/alienate queer students. Sex is sex, queer sex and hetero sex should not be discussed as two separate things.

Ideally, bringing forth more LGBTQ+ topics in other subjects, such as English, History, PDHPE, will help normalise queer people existing in our past, present, and future. However currently, they are only taking a small amount of time to cover barely anything useful for our queer students. 

LGBTIQ Health stated in their 2021 Snapshot: “More support systems need to in place for LGBTQ+ students. Pamphlets are not enough! School counsellors need to be trained in helping queer kids, as 63.8% aged 14-21 have reported that they’ve received a diagnoses for a mental health condition in 2021″ (LGBTIQHealth.org page 6).

There would be less stigmatism and judgement if students learn together the significance of the LGBTQ+ community, that way queer identifying kids won’t ashamed or fearful of their classmates.

What People Who Have Left School Think

When studying the responses from people who are out of school, they were more critical on the education system with their answers. 

One of the participants of the questionnaire said: “I wish safe sex was talked about on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum instead of just for straight people. I also wish I could have learned about gender queerness and different sexualities in school from an early age.”(Anon)

Many of our responses from participants out of high school were upset that they never had an opportunity to learn about LGBTQIA+ health/lifestyles. When comparing answers from the people in school to the people out of it, there seemed to be little to no difference. This shows that the education system needs to make more changes to their syllabus to include LGBTQIA+ children/youth. 

Problems With the Education System Beyond Teaching

Gendered uniforms cause more harm than good for gender diverse students. In my own personal experience (Kai), ‘girls’ were meant to wear skirts and ‘boys’ were meant to wear trousers. Regardless of queer identities, forcing a specific sex to wear certain bottoms is disgusting and harmful. Many girls were given detentions as they wore sports uniform shorts because it made them more comfortable. Girls should have the right to be able to wear shorts or trousers as an option This has since been regulated since graduating, however that is far too late and should have already been an option. And if that was a problem for cis-gender girls, imagine the discomfort of gender diverse people.

A participant of the questionnaire expressed a similar experience:

“I wasn’t allowed to wear pants as they were the ‘males’ uniform”(Anon)

Personal accounts:

Was there/is there any bullying or harassment that has happened in your school based of queer genders or sexualities? 

- “I did receive bullying and harassment due to being bi. While I was ‘out’ to my friends, in year eight it went around the whole school and people from different years would come up to my and ask me questions and tell me I was just trying to get attention. There was a particular bully in my English class who harassed me for years, would always bring up my sexuality in class and try to embarrass me. We got in a fight in Maths class, I was sent to the vice-principle. She wasn’t. Too be fair, I was being very loud.”

- “Yes. Absolutely. Eg: “dyke” “carpet muncher” “ faggot” “it” “shemale”  etc..”

Were you taught about youth and adults being transgender (i.e. options on how to transition socially and/or medically, different pronouns)?

- “No, similar to the lack of Same-sex education, schools offer no teaching on those that identify as transgender, non- binary, or teach why pronouns are important to respect.”

- “Gender queerness was not accepted at all at my high school.”

During sex education, were you taught about same sex couples (i.e. how to practice safe sex with same-sex partners)?

- “Only if someone asked specifically about them, and in my classes, nobody asked. “

- “No, I do wish schools offered better education when it comes to same-sex relationships as the curriculum covers little to nothing.”

- “I was already self-taught, but no. It was mostly about contraceptives and the female reproductive system. Very basic, and heteronormative.”

Book Recs

Hello! so for my first post, I'll recommend some books, so y'all can have a closer look at some fandoms I'll post about! enjoy!!

1.  

Harry Potter By J.K. Rowling is definitely an interesting, well-written series! there are 7 books however, and the books get bigger as the series progresses. It's sometimes difficult to know the exact order, so I'll list it below:

Although the movies are great, they don't include all the amazing details, as with all movies. A short summary:

Harry Potter, a young boy who’s being constantly abused by his uncle Vernon and aunt Petunia, gets a peculiar letter from the magical school of Hogwarts, where he spends most of his time, becoming his home.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians, along with the other series by Rick Riordan, is a definite must-read. With each book, you can really notice the character developments and a lot more! There is loads of representation in this one, with lgbtqia+ characters, black characters, Muslim characters and more. It's very action-packed and addicting, sucking you into the magnificent world of Half-Bloods and Demigods within the first page. The first series consists of 5 books, in the following order:

THE MOVIES ARE TRASH SO I DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND WATCHING THEM BEFORE READING THE BOOKS!!! There were many changes and the movies aren't nearly as good as the books. A short summary:

Percy Jackson, a 12 year-old who lives with his mother, Sally, and step-father, Gabe, attends the private boarding school Yancy Academy. While on a school trip, his teacher, Mrs. Dodds, turns into a fury and attacks him. This, in turn, triggers a series of other problems and adventures.

Starring the movies is the amazing Jennifer Lawrence, but with all books, the movies have slight differences, although I definitely recommend watching them when you're done with the books.

In a world run by fictional classes known as factions, children who reach the age of 16 begin to choose which factions they wish to call home for the rest of their lives. Each faction comes with its own ups and downs, so it's definitely a hard choice, especially for someone as unique as Beatrice.

I’m sure you've heard at least a little bit about this book. While not nearly as famous as ones mentioned above, it's still just as good, of not better. I'd say this book is one of my favorites, to be honest. It speaks about a lot of topics people usually find disturbing, and it makes me so happy that it's there, it's written, it's amazing. PTSD, coming out issues, abusive relationships and more, this book is truly awesome.

Kaur explores the true impact of sexual abuse and harassment, as well as the difficulties of immigrating, being a female, and depression.

This book isn't very well-known, which really sucks because I really love how it speaks about the consequences of WWII from the German point of view. And about the Germans who did not believe in Hitler's ways. It's also based on a real story, and it's so cool

Summary: 

A nurse working in a nursing home meets a peculiar old lady who decides to tell her her story when she meets the nurse's younger son, Karl, who reminded her of her brother. Lizzie (the old lady) speaks about life in Dresden before the war, and even after it. She also tells them the story about the strange, magnificent elephant in her garden.

before she was officially kicked out of the house, madison’s mom got into an argument with her grandma about putting the baby up for adoption, but it went as well as when she had tried to convince her to get an abortion when maddie was announced in the first place

maddie’s mom loved her little girl more than anything else in this world and she was gonna raise it, with or without her family’s support

to this day, maddie and her mom still have a strained relationship to her grandparents and the girl grew up never actually meeting her dad but if you ask her, she has no problem with this at all

tho the happy, bubbly, dramatic little girl didn’t have grandparents or a father figure to help look after her, she had her mom and her aunt who stuck by her mother’s side despite their parents wishes, and her mom’s best friends and even their neighbors that instantly fell in love with the little girl the instant they moved into their new apartment (so like pretty much a mama mia situation lol); her mother and best friends were always there to support madison’s endeavors, letting her dress how she wanted to school, showing up in a too-too and cowboy boots and being the shining star at every school play that there was

nonbinary pronouns

so I have recently re-figured out that I might be non-binary in some kind of way (I don’t quite know what is going on and that’s ok!). I am in no way out except for maybe 2 people at best, but I would like to use they/them pronouns in english (other languages spoken in my environment do not have non-binary pronouns I feel comfortable with). Yeah so that’s something to tackle at some point but this is not what I want to go on about right now...

So I have been extremely conscious about gendered language recently and just noticing all the ways that it is still used unnecessarily. Especially in an lgbtqia+ themed course I am attending at school I find it sad that we still can’t escape the pesky binary. It’s so easy to use neutral terms and ensure the comfort of all students whether or not they are out (and it shouldn’t be a requirement to be out!!). And now that I pay more attention to this, it makes me more uncomfortable. Just today we were separated into boys and girls again - haven’t heard that in a hot minute - ugh, just unnecessary discomfort. I wish we would normalize neutral language and asking for people’s pronouns already, but ya can’t have everything I guess.

It’s also that I benefit from being so incredibly cis-passing that I could safely experiment with pronouns in certain environments and not receive backlash. It’s a privilege I am very aware of and I have to hold myself accountable to defending trans people who do not benefit from this, because as much as I can complain about these issues, I do not and will not experience anywhere near the same amount of prejudice/discrimination as people who do not or do not want to pass as cis (which of course is also valid).

At first the game was total shit since there were a lot of servers crash on this new game, I honestly thought we would just leave and go back to TESO or something casual, since I've already rushed Dragon Nest's new events and the others, lol. We have been able to play but in the end the game was worthless, lmao. It wasn't original, had nothing to be "interesting". Maybe it was "fun" but I don't really care about it anymore... At least, WyverneCastel was funny. They even asked me if I was alright??? I thought they were joking or begging me to buy them something in another game, but it seemed not? I thought it would be good to test out if they were a true friend or not and huh... I was terrified at first.  I thought the whole room was dragging itself into flames and that heat was going to consume me. Either I would burn out or burn the whole world down like I was probably expected to do. So... I've spoken to them, for once. They appeared to be really understanding, somehow. I thought I might get banned or blacklisted for saying out loud that I was gay but oh, I guess our gamers's mindset wasn't that shitty for once. He wasn't surprised that much, so I can't tell if he was really serious about anything but... He told me that of course if the one I loved rejected me because I love him instead of "her", then I should just forget about him because he would be just another bastard I shouldn't pine on... Sure enough, but if love was that easily curable, I wouldn't be on the verge of grieving, nah, crying with all my might just because I "have" a date with the one I love, even though it really doesn't make any sense. His Internet couldn't have crashed since I still could hear his mic buzzing, and so neither was the mic off. He simply, didn't make a sound. For a few seconds. And if he had been surprised about my choice not "being Epel", then he would have surprised before, and not lolling as he was, probably. I didn't tell him but he probably wants me to ask him about this someday too. I guess... I didn't have the time to question him since some scams invaded our serv and began behaving as if they were girls with their girly characters in-game... Of course they were asking for money for IRL meetings and all that stuff so I just hacked them... It took a few minutes, but I couldn't afford to lose hours with WyverneCastel trying to ignore them when they were making a ruckus and... using hyper sexualized women characters? Like wtf, are we still in the past, dudes? They're just hurting everyone by doing this, and the LGBTQIA+ community doesn't needs some dumbfucked lads who would just serve as scapegoats for people hating on trans people and women... So fucking tiresome. I just wanted to talk about my prince and bad-written NPCs barged in. In the end, he just told me everything would be alright as long as I was staying true to my self and that I wouldn't find any semi-perfect prince if I didn't... I guess he meant that it would be easier to find one if I was faking but that the prince would indeed be ideal if everything was a lie, but then the whole prince, castle and white horse would be stuck together around me, and there would be no way of separating them... The coliseum was blessed by hollowness. Void and vacuity, though fake vacuity in the end, facing the sweet void, twirled among the stairs yet engraved by humans centuries ago. The eerie, airy presents were not made to hold any perfume neither scent. Only one or two students jumped from seat to seat to leave but nothing behind them. All of the ancient chairs were on their own, now.  And thus, the presence among them refrained from gamboling as well, and went back to another void. They were, after all, no exception.

-Hmm, it seems the coliseum is empty today. I guess sometimes pups do behave as good boys. Well, if they study in the meantime, that is.

The wind was cut at some point, even if it was authorized to come in this area. He should not be that greedy, probably. No storm, no tempest, no breeze was to interrupt an exam day in the coliseum. Sunshine could not disappear yet, but someday quiet shadows would run accross the dirt field. Stones bedecked by seals and symbols did not need all of this light.

The seats were still empty, and were meant to stay away from a temporary crowd. The sun was already too much of a witness, in the end. How much would he suck away all of the water in the flames heir? Perhaps it would first attack his surroundings. He was not alone. There was even a possibility he would get away with a tiny drop in his hands. A drop shining by reflecting.

-Diamond Cater, Hunt Rook, get yourselves ready. Shroud Idia, Clover Trey, stand in front of them. We will start the exam. Let us see who can stand until the end.

The two semi-teams came forth. None of them were fully a team, indeed. Diamond and Hunt smiled to a certain percent, and Clover and Shroud stressing to another. Was it the higher the better, or the lower the better? Several words were muttered by Idia, and Trey barely reacted. Were Rook and Cater deserving of a victory, now?

A fireball flew across the area, flickering of mad sparkles. Yet, it was alone, as blinding as it could be. No other fires hid themselves. The light went forward, running through the usual sea-like Cater toward the forever lake-like Trey. Cater's "selves" were still, and would not move as long as Trey was not overdoing himself. Basically, Cater "should" have aimed to reduce his focus and magic slots. If Trey could have defend himself twice, then he should have throw several fireballs, as long as they were more than two. Yet he did not. No matter how Trey was stretching his neck and all body as one, there was but one fireball coming his way.

-That won't do it, Cater! I will bring you down... and I will take care of Hunt!

-Heeh~ Could that mean you can't take both of us down? You're really tired, huuh~! I will make you fall asleep and you'll have some sweets dreams, Treyyyyyy~!

They both brung their hands on their foreheads and wiped some sweat, almost in the same fashion as well. There was a possibility they were both lying. Yet, if Cater has used his unique magic and was still forced to maintain it because of Trey's unique magic coercing them into a motionless army... The fireball burst into numerous drops and shone into multiple drips full of infinite colors, filled with Trey's own magic and shades.

-Don't even think your fire magic will be enough to defeat me.

-Then I'll use some tree one... Just kidding! I knew I wouldn't defeat you, but we already won, right, Rook~?

Rook Hunt had disappeared from Trey sight for a long time for obvious reasons, but so had Idia.

The wind finally thronged in the no-more private area. The void would likely move as well. Among all the droplets, their status was but one, and only one. They were the one hindering the sun fostering reflection. They were the one hiding music. The child of the void's hair waltzed dazzlingly under the bright sun overflowing. His fingers tried to force the hair down in the hood, but only some of his skin obeyed in the end. He coerced his feet protected from the atmosphere by boots to move on, and more especially, back. But the crown of flames rushed forward, gleaming in front of him again.

What does design mean to you?

Design is everything to me.

What do you believe in as a designer?

I believe in design that makes sense and is as communitive as a language.

What are your goals?

I want to do everything I possibly can while I’m on this earth. My current short-term goals are moving to NYC after graduation and hoping for the best in my post-grad career. I also will be (hopefully) attending NYU for my MA in Visual Arts Administration. I eventually want to design with fashion brands and working in ad agencies to prevent racially tone-deaf campaigns and create REAL diversity and inclusion in the design world.

What is your mission as a designer?

How will you benefit most in this program?

Not sure I benefited from this program design wise. It has definitely helped me realize that I have an obligation to design with intent and push buttons people really don’t like being pushed. This program has made me realize that liberal designers are to be side eyed at all times.

What do you wish you had known before going into the DVC program?

Nothing worth mentioning.

Are there resources you feel are important to be exposed to as a design student? If so, what are they?

Many resources like Microagressions 101, Intro to How to Be a Designer and Take Criticisms. But in all seriousness, these students need to take diversity classes.

How do you think your professors can help you become a stronger designer in the program?

Lisa Moline and Adream Blair were the only instructors that had a bit of value to me. They were understanding, helped me outside of design classes and encouraged me to be the best I could be.

What are your hopes, dreams, and fears when it comes to being a DVC student at UWM?

Design to me is a form of expression that’s contained and more on the professional side

I believe as a designer I should be able to create and manipulate simple ideas and make them better than they already were

How has the program helped you out post graduation?

Going through any branding process from beginning to end, and how each part is equally important and shouldn’t be overlooked. Thinking outside the box is a huge aspect; you don’t have to be new, you just have to be different. Obviously, I wouldn’t be nearly as versed in the Adobe Suite if it weren’t for my fantastic teachers/mentors. Between learning Photoshop and Javascript, the DVC program has helped me grow my passion for design tremendously.

What's the biggest you have learned in dvc?

Design can be simple, but meaningful. How it makes people feel is one of the more important facets of design. Design impacts everyday life more than we know, and effects almost everyone.

How is the professional world different from the classroom?

Sometimes I found myself feeling crushed for time with projects in class, but that was nothing compared to a professional environment. In my experience, clients/employers want things done yesterday, everyday. There are obviously many different scenarios, but I’ve come to learn that starting with fewer design variations then choosing one direction and perfecting it has been the most consistent and successful design pathway. Also, thick skin is a must. Learn to accept and understand constructive criticism in school, because in a professional environment people will tear apart your designs without the slightest thought of the person making them. Try not to take it personally, but always have reasons to back up your case. Sometimes a little convincing is all it takes. One last thing - make connections and network. This is my biggest regret about college - the more people you know the more resources and ties you have to fantastic opportunities. You might not think someone working at a logistics company would be a good connection, but maybe they just met up with a friend from high school who is now a Creative Director looking for a new intern.

What do you do when you get stuck on a design?

I take a break, and walk away for awhile. Sometimes I'm going in circles or stuck in a box and I don’t even know it, but after some time away from the design thinking about other things I can come back with some clarity.

How do you stay creative?

Design prompts are always fun https://sharpen.design/ Otherwise perusing other designers and projects on sites like Pinterest, Dribbble, Moat.com, Logoinspirations.co, etc.

How do you stay inspired?

I’ll be honest it’s a little difficult at times; I’ll get burnt out from designing and will need a little break. After awhile, I’ll start noticing everyday things that I’ll want to change up and redesign. I always try to have a desire to make existing things better, and how that influences things I create in the future.

How do you develop your style?

Try everything out! The more mediums you practice or try out, the more you learn if you like to do those things. And if not, you can check them off your list. Some people find their niche easily or right away, and some it takes awhile. Personally, I’m still trying to find my personal style. But through trying things out, lots of practice, and a strong focus on one idea I’m getting closer to my niche.

What made you get into design?

I’ve always loved art, since I was a kid. I would always be drawing and painting, so I knew I wanted to do something with it for a career. Attending UWM gave me so many options to choose from in the art department, and even though first year classes seemed redundant, each one was a core

What are your goals?

I’d like to be the Lead Designer at a fast growing and fun company in the world of recreation, retail, or entertainment.

How do you feel about the way others will view your work?

Honestly I wonder about that all the time. You want people to love your work, and you want to be the best. But I consciously remember to try and not working

Tell me about your most favorite design moment?

I was working on a project in Experimental Typography, and our project was an interactive installation of bubble wrap typography on the streets of Milwaukee. Seeing people interact with our designs was incredible, knowing that we positively impacted their day even for just a moment felt great.

How have you been able to manage workload?

Setting a time to work on something, and when that time is up move on. If you’re on a roll that’s fine, but working on one thing forever can get you bogged down and forget about other things. If you can chip away at multiple things throughout the day by assigning them a certain time amount and in the order they need to be done then your workload will seem more manageable.

Any other advice you would give to a DVC student?

Always always always always back up your work. Invest in a hard drive and back up weekly or every other week. Ramen is great but don’t underestimate the power of a great meal, and a decent night’s sleep. It’s not “cool” to be a starving artist (literally) with no sleep. Your personal and mental health are worth more than your final projects.

How. Do you keep your professionalism up?

Fake it till you make it, it’s all about the little things like business cards, a business email. But mostly it’s carrying yourself like a professional would.

How do you brand yourself?

Find the thing that is the most you, for me it’s drugstorebuddhist as a brand name, and stick to it. Also the things that you do in your services are branding too, you want your brand to be associated with good service and excellent work!

What are the 3 most important thing a designer should know?

Not every thing you do as a designer is going to make you as an artist happy, sometimes the client wants something really simple and you just go with it.

The clients are always going to want to tweak the design to death and sometimes it hurts but it’s okay!

It’s very important to keep a personal practice for yourself just for fun where you can reach those creative goals.

How have you been able to include multi-medium work in your designs?

Products! A lot a clients only think that I can offer digital label designs or tshirts but for me having a catalog of all the things I can do as a designer and an artists helps my clients, it’s like a good menu at a restaurant they always want dessert.

What can. You say about being an entrepreneur?

It’s hard! Nobody tells you that when you run a business you’re doing the work of 6 people but it’s awesome and eventually you’ll be able to hire people if that’s your goal. But it being hard doesn’t really hurt because you’re doing what you want to be doing for your business!

How is the professional world different from the classroom?

In the classroom I feel like there is a lot of critique that’s optional and you have a lot of control, a lot of the time as a designer you show them a finished product and sometimes they need something different entirely and you have to make those changes.

What do you do when you get stuck on a design?

I look through similar projects I’ve done in the past, other designers work to be inspired and generally seeing what the industry is up to or working on a different design for a bit and circling back with fresh ideas

How do you stay creative?

KEEP YOUR OWN PRACTICE ALIVE! Even if your creative energy is not in design make sure you’re doing work for yourself!

Honestly the energy that the clients have when they have project ideas for you and how excited they are to work with you and see your art!

Nervous as all hell, hopefully that goes away sometime but I also hope it doesn’t because it makes me want to prove myself to my peers

I finished a product Commission for a clients and she loved it a lot to the point of tears for me helping her Company become Something physical that she could see outside of her head

How have you been able to manage workload?

Wake up at the same time every day even though it will kill you a little bit and keep yourself on a strict schedule even if it means having to go somewhere else just to be able to work, just because you can work at home does not mean you should

On being gay - (a few days late but here’s to coming out day)

It’s been a long debate over history if people become who they are from nature or nurture.  Sexuality seems to be the favorite topic to visit in this discussion --- “are people born gay or do they become gay?”

I am someone who was born gay.

Growing up, I didn’t really fit in with the stereotypical girly girl.  I didn’t like pink, wearing tight clothes, doing my nails, braiding hair, none of that.  I was in the mud, in a dress with a frizzy ponytail and a mob of guy friend (thank my older brother for that). You could always catch me with my guy friends, because I was “one of them”.  They understood me.  I wanted to build Legos, race in our go carts we made, play flag football and so did they – that simple.

As I grew up and life became more nuanced, I realized it wasn’t’ that simple. Things got weird, life got weird.  Let’s call that puberty.

Before puberty I didn’t’ really have to worry about being close to guys because I didn’t have the emotional capacity to really say that I liked someone as anything more than a friend. I was simply young, and enjoyed the stereotypical “guy” things.  Sometime during puberty these things called feelings developed inside people and they were getting in the way of my friendships because all of a sudden guys wanted me to be their girlfriend.

Up until the age of 16, heterosexuality was all I saw.  So with that, I had some boyfriends.  My boyfriends were always my best guy friends.  My favorite guy friend.  But really nothing romantic.  Some of them were cute (yes, you can acknowledge attraction of a human without being physically attracted to them) some of them I genuinely liked as people (yes, someone could be a good person without you wanting to be with them) and something wasn’t right.

With these feelings that puberty had gifted me, why could I notice a pretty girl in a room before any guy? Why was I more comfortable around guys and weird around girls? And why did I want more girls in my life now? Becoming more “girly”

It wasn’t until I got to college I got the missing puzzle piece.

It was my first day of school that truly changed my life.  I remember walking around trying to find my classes as a freshman and getting starred at by girls.  I felt like a sore thumb and I had no idea why.  Until boom, I see girls walking on the sidewalk holding hands.  Girls stopped outside the dorms kissing.  Girls with other girls in an open romantic relationship

?!?!?!WHATT?!?!?!?!

I never knew women dating women was an option in this world.  There was no shows, people in my life or any exposure to anything outside of men and women being together.  And for years growing up, I knew something was different.  I knew something was off.  I just couldn’t say what because it wasn’t in my realm of thinking to be able to. I didn’t know being gay is a thing.

From that point on, I was able to slowly step into living my truth of being a gay woman.  I dated woman openly, loved women openly, shared that part of myself openly, no longer felt like something was wrong with me.  I didn’t have to confess a deep dark secret or shout to the world I’m gay because I feel I always have been.

So I guess my coming out story is this one: I am gay, I don’t need to label myself, share it and shout it out because I am not an alien and it isn’t wrong of me to love who I love. I use the pronoun her, and sometimes call myself an old man.

I share this because within my story I believe there are some fundamental take aways that I hope everyone receives.  Somewhere in the story you may have been able to guess I was gay but because heterosexuality is the norm and there was limited exposure to anything outside of it, I had no idea why I was different.  Some argue that having same sex cartoons and shows are problematic. My opinion that’s just an irrational fear and insecurity.  The truth is exposing someone to something they aren’t will not suddenly make them that. I was only exposed to heterosexuality until 16/17 and I was still not straight.  The same will be true for straight kids seeing same sex couples.  

My life wasn’t hard because I didn’t see same sex couples, but for some people it is.  For some people, feeling not normal and not seeing any example or representation of you in the world can make one feel isolated and outcasted (which is completely common in the LGBTQIA+ community and sometimes a result of suicide)

It wasn’t until college I really knew what being gay meant and how it wasn’t just me on an island anymore. Like it or not, I was a part of an oppressed and misunderstood community.  Today is an important day for my community.  Today people are sharing what their journey has been.  I was one of the lucky ones.  I didn’t really have a big coming out party/or bashing.  I never ran into too many problems with acceptance or being able to be who I am.  I am privileged in that sense.  And I recognize that.

The resources out there now is immense, the amount of information and knowledge teens in high school and college students have now is amazing.  I wish I had that knowledge and exposure when I was that age.  

It takes time, the hardest part for me was coming out to myself.

My mother never left a chance to remind me how safe I am compared to other women. She never left a chance to remind me that I have 'given' a lot of freedom to do things and I must not abuse my freedom. And this concept of freedom has always been used as a reward. Like training a dog with treats for good behaviour, I was 'provided freedom' to do things when I was mute and unquestioning. And the moment I started questioning, the freedom was taken away.

My school had this habit of awarding 'best student of the year' to one student across all grades every year. It's a great honour for us to receive that award. I used to work hard to score good marks to be at the top of my class. I even did sports, which I loathed, for this stupid award. At the end of the year, I was pretty hopeful that I would get the prize. I mean, I have worked hard. But, no surprises here, I didn't get it. When I asked my teacher about it later, she told me that I was boisterous and stubborn and I talk back which shows that I am yet to develop discipline. I was 10. I still nurse the wound of not getting that prize when I worked so hard for it.

It is after that episode that I officially gave up being nice. And wherever I go, it has always caused me problems with the authorities. My professor was once kind enough to let me know that I will achieve nothing with my mouth running loose. While he has no problems with boys talking back, he schooled me how to be a good Hindu girl. I have always asserted my right to choose. I have always asserted my voice. I am loud and boisterous. Even if it led to beating me or hating me, I have never deterred. Because, my voice, my rights, and my freedom are worth more than whatever fight I had to put up with. I had this notion from a very young age but I was distracted by my own hypocrisy and biases.

Reading Fearless Freedom has been exhilarating. I have read so many things that are happening in our home and the outside as well that are disguised as 'normal.' I realized that the things which are done to us because I care about you are not about care at all. It is about the control they can exert over me. And I finally understood why all the authority figures in my life have been angry with me. When I assert my rights and voice my opinions, they lose the control they can exert which makes their veins throb with rage. The violence and threats are a result of this loss of control and never for my own good.

We are taught this stereotypical image of how a woman should be and how she should respond. We see it everywhere. There's no denying that. From custodial confinement to love jihad to military rape to femicides, we see violence and crimes against women as a form of upholding patriarchal honour. Using women as a ploy to satisfy the need to commit violence and perpetrate violence. The author shows us examples from all over the country and draws parallels to many international movements. The results are hopeful in some cases but most devastating. We are shown how women are just a shell of their former selves. We are shown how these caste hierarchies help in the exploitation of a woman's dignity. We are shown about the various propaganda that spews hate towards women, LGBTQIA folks and other minorities.

The author connects the political agenda and feminism and how these political agendas inflict a lifetime of trauma on the affected people. Catherine Malabou, a French philosopher, says, "We must all of us recognize that we might, one day, become someone else, an absolute other, someone who will never be reconciled with them-selves again, someone who will be this form of us without redemption or atonement, without last wishes, this damned form, outside of time." We all talk about the trauma of war. Trauma, caused by catastrophes or even a loss of a person close to us. But are we talking enough about the trauma of losing one's self? The trauma of being oppressed in our own home, by our own parents, siblings, husband, and eventually our children. The trauma inflicted by patriarchy.

Read Fearless Freedom not because it's about feminism but because it teaches how to be a feminist. It teaches us how to look at the bigger picture. It teaches us how to look past the bullshit of patriarchy. The only thing I felt lacking in this book is that there are very few instances of how men get affected by the same patriarchy. Other than that, this book is the perfect gem you were looking for to learn about Indian Feminism with a universal view.

Reader-identity crisis: is it real? *long post*

My experience of falling in love with books has not been an easy one. I always loved stories. Be it stories in books, movies, songs, dance or any form of narration, I would find myself under a spell. I love stories, that is the way it has always been.

The beginning

I read books but am not particularly drawn to them. It was in middle school that I started to read books ‘seriously’. I changed schools often because of my dad’s job. Being the A+ kid all my life, I found my position of the ‘bright student’ challenged at the new school. Most of the students there read books and one particular group of students whom I saw as my competitors in school activities have read a lot of books. They had good command over English and could weave good stories. I felt both – jealousy and loneliness. I wanted to fit in just as much as I wanted to come out at the top.

During the summer of the 7th grade, I surprisingly got selected to national level writer’s workshop along with the group of students that I wanted to befriend. I thought of it as the perfect opportunity to learn, grow and connect with others who loved stories. But I couldn’t enjoy that. I knew far too less compared to others about books and authors. I couldn’t pronounce ‘genre’ properly let alone know what it means. So, to keep me afloat I followed along with the popular choice and opinion. Harry Potter was the focus during that time. Just about everyone seemed to be reading it, watching the movies and discussing the arcs of the series. I started reading the series purely to join the discussion circle and as a bonus, I liked the story. I love the world of Hogwarts and the opportunities there. Thinking that I could finally enter this circle I read all the books simply because others were reading it too.

You must have seen what was wrong with that logic. I was forcing other’s tastes in books down my throat. Reading books was not pleasant but surprisingly it was entertaining enough to ignore the tightness in my heart. When I had to leave books for a while to focus on academics during high school, it came as a welcome break. I changed schools again so there was no longer any reason for me to continue reading what others have been reading. However, I love stories and nothing could keep me away from that. I learnt that a book I loved back in the day that I chose myself had a sequel, so, I brought it and read. Slowly, I started looking out for more reads by myself and dabbling in various genres and writing styles. It was fun! I could see why people loved it enough to forget the world around them! It was like I finally could command my ship to venture out in the sea of literature. But like any novice solitary captain despite the love for the ocean, I was scared of it. The thrill of exploration was dwarfed by the fear of exclusion.

Reader-Identity crisis

I liked reading stories that include queer themes characters, story arcs and/or romance. My bookshelf is overwhelmingly queer literature and for some reason, I couldn’t proudly display it to others or share my love for it openly.

When one’s choices are different from mainstream media, they feel lonely and scared. They are treated as outcasts if people don’t agree with their taste and subject to judgements and opinions of others. Reading may seem like a solitary hobby but readers need social community just as much as any other person. Readers tend to feel alienated too for their reading choice.

For example, Twilight. Twilight enjoys a lot of popularity. Many love the books series and movies too, to an extent. However, as observers who did not read the stories, the only reason why we see people talking about Twilight is because of how awful it is. I am guilty of being swept away by that opinion too. I thought they were uninteresting and cringy. One day when my friends and I were talking about our latest reads, the newbie reader among us, Allie, proclaimed her love for Twilight. That was one of the first series she was reading and she was loving it. I cringed inwardly at her taste. Unlike me, my seasoned-reader friend Jan, (whose extensive read shelf on Goodreads intimidates me) criticized the Twilight series and questioned the other’s taste openly. Alllie was so angry she teared up. She was not having any of our snobbish shit and made it clear that we could keep our opinions to ourselves. She is allowed to love what she loves. No reason required.

I had been in a reader-identity crisis for a while then. Unlike my friend it didn’t occur to me that I am allowed to like the books just because I do. My apprehension was not entirely unfounded. Books are a form of personal expression for both the writer and the reader. Me reading queer literature was my expression. Those stories made me feel accepted before I accepted who I am myself. Declaring openly about what I like to read seemed like I am baring myself naked in front of the world for it to pass a judgement. When I am writing this, it sounds rather dramatic but it was scary inside my head then. Scarier because I felt alone.

The talk around queer literature was so diverse I was bobbing up and down the sea of opinions. There was the scare of being accused of fetishizing gay men or being a crazy fangirl. I once in a panic said, ‘Queer literature is just like regular ones but, you know, with queer characters.’ Oh dear, I wish I could punch that past me. Queer stories are not a remix of mainstream heteronormative ones. Everything about them is different precisely because it features queer themes. The character dynamics, their relationship, the trials and tribulations are part of a queer person’s story which are nothing like a regular joe because queer people aren’t regular.

The heteronormative narrative almost made me feel guilty for being queer and later for wanting to read LGBTQIA+ stories.

A poet friend of mine who wanted to read novels asked me for recommendations so I gave her Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe. It has a poetic sadness in its prose and I thought she would like it. It was also a sneaky way for me to test how she would react if she knew that by the end of the book the two best friends would proclaim their love for each other. She returned the book a week later and simply said, ‘oh, I did not it was gay.’ That sentence felt like a slap. The fact that she needed a warning or notice beforehand made me uncomfortable. I resisted the urge to defend the book saying, ‘it wasn’t gay. They only declare like each other in the last 10 pages.’ The hell with excuses!

Around the same time, Allie asked me for books. I had Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe in my hand (I started re-reading it as a form of protest). I was not entirely sure how she would react so I read her the first chapter to see if she would want to read further. She instantly connected to the tone of the story. She excitedly asked me if she could borrow it. A week later when she returned it, she was cooing over how adorable she found the ending and how much the characters grew by the end. She embraced the story as a story. She did not put them in boxes. She embraced them as a whole. That day I had a new-found respect for her and also, I found my first real-life reading buddy.

Happy Ending (?)

I believe that my identity is not limited to answering a few questions on forms or during the discussion of sensitive topics. Who I am and what I like, are all forms of self-expression and there are times we may feel less safe or welcome for just being me. This is my story of falling in love with reading. It started as a way for me to enter a social group and since then, I found a whole new community, a part of the world that feels like home. All because I could dare to fall in love with words and the magic they hold.

hello!!! hi!! i'm so glad you've been starting to be more critical and conscious about the media you consume!! it's essential we do that most of the time, even with the things we like a lot, because nothing is 100% perfect and, especially in an environment like the one thai bls create, we should always be mindful and critical of what that piece of media represents and showcases of our community to the rest of the world. and th*rnt*pe does a terrible job at showing to others what the lgbtqia+ community really is when they base a whole relationship on sexual harassment, violence and disdain to the other party. not to mention that horrible and heartbreaking side story with tar (and fuck lh*ng man fuck him so much.). as for m*w, we don't //really// know what went down between him and art, but i honestly don't think art would be that distressed and crying that much if he'd made it all up, so i prefer to believe him (since he clearly was the victim) and just shove m*w as far away from me as i can because i feel the same as you: he basically tries to force himself on others (when he's a fully grown ass adult) and it's just not reciprocated. which is awkward as fuck.

as for which shows you should avoid, i'm not a connoisseur in bl, but i'm gonna name a few that threw me off and i wouldn't want to go back to (or certain storylines that just don't do us a favour as a community that is in desperate need of positive rep) under the cut!

waterboyy the series is a show i regret SO MUCH wasting my time on and i wish i could just erase it from my mind. it has a weird couple with a huge age gap, the main couple is the worst enemies to lovers i've ever seen, r*pe that is never addressed, terrible female representation, side couple is forced and lowkey toxic (one of them is extremely predatory on the other ://), and a lesbian character with great potential turned predatory and "crazy" and then they make her end up with a boy (which makes my blood boil.).

en of love: love mechanics is another one idk why i wasted my time watching, yet most people will tell you it's their fave part of the trilogy. i personally dislike this so much because their relationship is fucked up since day one. mark (drunk out of his mind) kisses vee thinking vee is someone else, vee (who wasn't as drunk and definitely conscious of what was happening) just lets him do it, proceeds to sleep with him (very dubious consent) and then throws mark away as if mark was a toy because vee has a girlfriend. the basic plot is that but it just gets worse as the story goes on and vee never treated mark with respect. which is a shame since the actors have an amazing chemistry :/

love by chance BUT only tumtar's and technokengkla's storylines. lbc is happening in the same cinematic universe as ttts so tar is going through basically the same he did in tt, but this time they feed into this incest plot that sickens me. and to put it shortly, kengkla and techno's brother (who literally sold his brother to kengkla) plot a whole scene to make kengkla and techno sleep together, which happens when techno is so drunk he can barely walk. kengkla proceeds to r*pe him and then blame him afterwards for what happened. their "story" will really "begin" now in lbc2 but if i were you, i would just skip their scenes.

history2: crossing the line side couple is also an incest couple (but the main couple is great and i recommend you check the series out!!) and history3: make our days count side couple is between a high school student and an adult......... so yeah yikes. (but the main story is also good so if you wanna watch it just skip their scenes lmao)

these are all the ones i can think of rn, maybe there's more, but the fact that you are already watching them with your critical sense turned on is really great! you'll be able to tell harmful plots from good ones yourself in no time. i hope i helped and that you are safe and well 💓
