What kind of saber is baxia anyway?

I love my bloodthirsty princess of a cursed blade, and in my heart of hearts i am nothing but a sword nerd, so i've been extremely fascinated by Baxia and how we know frustratingly little about what she actually looks like!

I mean, look at bichen, right?

Bichen in the donghua:

Bichen in the drama:

They're clearly not exactly the same. The scabbards are different, and the guards have a different shape. But these are recognizably different iterations on one theme, right? Thin jian with a white grip silver guard, light blue tassel and silver mounting accents on the scabbard.

Now this is baxia in the donghua:

And baxia in the drama:

THAT'S A COMPLTELY DIFFERENT WEAPON

it doesn't stop there either, the audio drama is kind enough to give us ANOTHER COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BAXIA

pretty! But how is that he same sword??

And when we go back to the novel, we get very little information on her appearance other than the fact that her blade is tinted red with all the blood she's absorbed. Which none of these designs incorporate.

This is not a dig on the designs itself, they're all quite gorgeous in their own right and i'm going to spend a while discussing all of them! Because isn't it fascinating how, since we know little about novel baxia beyond "saber" all of these designs ended up so different? What kinds of sabers are these, anyway?

So, a chinese aber, aka a "dao" (刀) just means a sword that has only one cutting side. As opposed to a jian, which has two.

You can see how that leaves a LOT of room for variaton.

I've actually seen some people get confused because Huaisang's saber in the untsmed is thin and quite straight, making it superficially resemble the jian more than drama!baxia, but it is still clearly a saber!

See? only one cutting blade!

This, to me looks a lot like a tang dynasty hengdao

TANGENT: during all this I found out the english wikipedia page for dao is WRONG! Ths is what they about the tang hengdao!

So that sounds like the hengdao was called that during the sui dynasty, but then, after that, started being called a peidao, right?

WRONG

I LOOKED AT THE SOURCE THEY USED AND IT SAYS THIS:

IT WAS CALLED THE PEIDOU UNTIL THE SUI DYNASTY, AT WHICH POINT IT WAS CALLED A HENGDAO. Which would carry over to the Tang dynasty. This was the source wikipedia linked! and it says something else than they say it does!

Anyone know how to edit a wikipedia article?

BACK TO BAXIA

Since we're already at the drama, let's look at drama baxia: She's also straight! the general term for straight-backed saber is Zhibeidao, but that's a modern collector's term, and doesn't really say anything about which historical kind of saber baxia could be based on. Another meta i found on the drama nie sabers already went on some detail here.

I'm gonna expand on that a little: The kinds of historical straight-backed sabers we see resemble the hengdao a lot more than they do baxia. They don't go to their point as harsly as she does (she's basically a cleaver!) and they're all way skinnier.

No, my personal theory is that instead of being based on any kind of historical sword, drama!baxia is based on a Nandao.

I mean, come on, look at it!

Baxia!

The Nandao... isn't actually a historical sword. It was invented for Wushu forms. There's a really fascinating article about its conception, but that's why the swords in the images look a little thin and flimsy. Wushu swords are very flexible and light, they're dance props, not weapons to fight with. There are actual steel versions of Nandao, but they're recreations of the prop, not the other way around.

So That's one way in which Baxia differes from the Nandao: she's actually a real weapon. The other is that, as you can see above, the nandao has an S-shaped guard. Baxia doesn't. She's also much more elaborately decorated, of course. Because she's a princess.

Now: audio drama baxia!

This is much easier. with that flare at the tip?

Oh baby that's a niuweidao, all the way!

There are more sabers with that kind of curved handle, but the broad tip is really charcteristic of the niuweidao. The Niuweidao is also incredibly poplar in modern media, often portrayed as a historical sword, but it originated i nthe 19th century! And it was actually never used by the military!

That's right, the Niuweidao was pretty much exclusively a civilian weapon! That makes its use here anachronistic, but so is the nandao, and considering that the origin story of the Nie is that they use Dao intead of Jian because their ancestors were butchers, portraying them with a weapon historically reserved for rebels and common people instead of the imperial military is actually very on theme!

Finally, Donghua/Manhua baxia. These two designs are so similar I'm going to treat them as one and the same for now.

Unlike both previous baxias, The long handle makes it clear this baxia is a two-handed weapon, though Nie Mingjue is absolutely strong enough to wield her with one hand anyway. Normal rules don't count for cultivators.

Now, this is where things get tricky, because there are a lot of words for long two-handed sabers. And a lot of them are interchangable! This youtube video about the zhanmadao, one of the possible sabers this baxia could be based on, goes a little into just how confusing this can get. This kind of blade WAS actually in military use for many centuries, making it the most historically accurate of all the baxias. But because of that it also has several names and all of those names can also refer to different kinds of blades depending on what century we're in.

So here's our options: i'm going to dismiss the wodao and miandao, because these were explicitly based on japanese sword design, and as we can see manhua baxia has that very broad tip, so that won't work

(Example of a wodao. According to my sources Miaodao is really just the modern common term for the wodao, and the changdao, and certain kinds of zhanmadao... do you see how quickly this gets confusing?)

Next option: Zhanmadao.

Zhanmadao stands for "horse chopping saber" so... yeah they were anti-cavalry weapons. meant to be able to cut the legs and/or necks of horses. That definitely sounds like a weapon Nie Mingjue would wield. But if you watched that youtube video i linked above, you'll know the standardized Qing dinasty Zhanmadao looked very different from earlier versions. It was inspired by the japanese odachi, and more resembles the miandao than its ealrier heftier counteprarts.

Earlier Ming dynasty Zhanmadao on the other hand were... basically polearms. the great ming military blog spot, another wonderful source, says these are essentially a kind of podao/pudao (朴刀) which looked like this

Now that blade looks a lot like baxia, but the handle is honestly too long. Donghua!baxia straddles the line between sword an polearm a little, but while zhanmadao have been used to refer to both long-handled swords and polerarms, this was undeniably a polearm, not a sword.

If you want to know what researching this was like, I found a picture of this blade on pinterest-- labeled as a "two-handed scimitar"-- and the comment section was filled with people arguing about whether this was a Pudao, Wudao, Zhanmadao, Dadao, Guandao, or a japanese Nagita.

So... that's how it was going. This has kept me up until 2 AM multiple times.

However! Thanks to this article on the great ming military blog I found out there have historically been pudao blades with shorter handles!

Specifically, Ming dynasty military writer Cheng Ziyi created a modified version of the pudao to work with the Dan Fao Fa Xuan technixues-- aka technqiues for a two-handed saber, which would alter heavily influence Miaodao swordmanship-- thereby, as the article points out, essentially merging the cleaver-polearm type Zhanmadao with the later two-handed japanese-inspired design.

This is the illustration for the Wu Bei Yao Lue (武備要略) a Ming dynasty military manual

This blade shape in the illustration doesn't match Baxia exactly, but since it's a lengthened Pudao-like blade and we've seen above that those can match Donghua Baxia's shape, i'm gonna say that calling Baxia a Zhanmadao with a two-handed grip isn't all that innacurate!

However, because all of these terms are so intertwined, there are a dozen other things you could call her that would be about equally correct.

To show that, here's a lightning round of other potential Baxia candidates:

Dadao (大刀)

Which are generally one-handed and too short. However!

Another youtube video i found of someone training with a Zhanmadao that resembles baxia a little also calls it a "shuangshoudai dao" (雙手带刀) shuangshou means two-handed, and while 雙手带 seems to refer to a longer handled weapon, when looking for a shuangshou dao or shuangshou dadao (双手大刀) we find a lot more baxia-resembling blades like here and here

I also found that, while the cleaver-like Dadao is strictly a product of the 20th centuy, since dadao just means big sword or big knife, it has been used to refer to loads of different weapons! Some people could've called the zhanmadao and pudao "dadao" during the Ming dynasty as well.

Another potential baxia candidate that mandarin mansion classifies as similar to the later dadao (though longer, as seen in the illustration below) is the "Kuanren Piandao"

Which piqued my interest because this diagram classifying different tpye of Dao:

Claims that a Kuanrenbiandao (diferent spelling, same sword) is the same as a modern day Zhanmadao.

(So once again, all of these terms are interchangable)

Another opton Is the Chuanmeidao/Chuanweidao (船尾刀) below you can see a diagram, based on the Qing dynasty green standard army regulation, of blades all officially classified as types of "pudao"

The top middle is the Kuanren Piandao, and bottom left is the Chuanweidao.

Both of these have a lot of baxia-like qualities.

So there you go! live action baxia is based on a Nandao, audio drama baxia is based on a Niuweidao, and Manhua/donghua baxia is some kind of two-handed Zhanmadao/Pudao/Dadao depending on how you want to look at it.

I'm honestly surprised no one has made the creative decision to portray Baxia as a Jiuhuandao, aka 9 ringed broadsword yet.

I mean look at it! Incredibly imposing. Would make for a great Baxia imo. (@ upcoming mdzs manga and mobile game: take notes!)

Hello, I recently started watching Claymore after seeing you reblog a few manga panels from it a while back. And holy moly its such a good show. I havent had this much fun while watching anime for a while. Just wanted to thank you for making me aware of it, never wouldve known about it otherwise since it seems to kind of have a small fanbase. Now if only all my faves stopped dying...

I will say, I haven't watched the anime yet (mostly bc I keep hearing very mixed reviews about it) but the manga has a very special place in my heart so I am absolutely thrilled to hear you watched it and love it!!!

A few months ago someone made an offhand joke about "a modern queer feminist retelling of [spins wheel]...the Second Punic War" and I, uh, wrote a long-ass text post on why that would actually work beautifully. The Lesbian Scipio AU has lived rent-free in my head ever since.

Even in real life, Scipio's preferred way of presenting was more closely based on Greek fashion than traditional Roman dress, which some of his contemporaries (most notoriously Cato the Elder) saw as effeminate. His tactics in battle, too, were initially seen as "cowardly and unmanly" because he used a lot of scouting, ambushes and commanding from a distance instead of fighting in the front lines like a "real man" should. And his strained relationship with traditionalists in the Roman Senate parallels how many women have to work twice as hard as men to be recognized, and they still receive man-splaining and attacks from envious peers who think they're too "bossy." Hannibal's story also shares some of these themes.

It takes almost no rewriting to depict the Second Punic War, but with Scipio and Hannibal as women (probably crossdressing a la Mulan). I think there are a lot of plot points that women and trans people could relate to.

Scipio and Hannibal also got along surprisingly well once they finally met, despite being mortal enemies for over a decade. Their later careers share even more parallels, like being forced to leave their hometowns for unfair reasons, and choosing their country's welfare over personal gain. If I were directing the Lesbian Punic War I'd have them retire together in Rhodes, so they could annoy each other more conveniently and bicker about philosophy.

I wrote 6000 words today!

#rant #tbf #idk if its gonna bite me in the ass or not but like #oh well. my goal is a first draft done by end of year #even if it sucks or its good or whatever i just want a draft completed !!!#i have been hung up on 2nd guessing my own writing for a month ;-#so i switched stories to one with a pov character narrator whos a history nerd of the world (and blackmails/spies on others a lot)#so like. hes a guy who knows a lot of info and happily rants anyway about exposition stuff to other characters #(like. hes literally an ambassador and explains perceived social norms differences between faeverse countries and facilitates cooperating)#so like. i figure at least i wont beat myself up for mentioning exposition #cause i guarantee however much i write. this character would be dumping 10 more page than me per minute. if he could sjdjdj #so ill likely have enough content included in the draft when im done. and itll be easier to cut some stiff #rather than needing to add missing stuff later

Follows Gwen, the princess of England, and Arthur, the distant descendent of King Arthur, who have been engaged since they were children but can't stand each other

When Arthur comes to visit for the summer they realize they're both queer, the two make a pact to cover for each other and find an unlikely friendship growing between them while they grapple with separate budding romances and looming royal responsibilities

On the website for my county government for some reason and all five of our county commissioners look like supervillains. Like. It looks like someone travelled across the multiverse to pluck five supervillains from five different genres and got them all together to govern my county for some reason.

#if I were smarter or more creative I could come up with a premise for each of them #we have (1) the evil nerdy tech guy. I keep thinking of the villain from despicable me #then there's (2) doug dimmadome looking motherfucker #who looks like he makes a habit of kicking poor hardworking families off the land that they've been farming for generations #(3) is...... the MOST business major man I have ever seen in my life (derogatory) and taking a look at his bio I am right #he is a villain in a movie about a union and he ends up killing someone with factory machinery or something #(4) is hard to get a read on. maybe like a military movie where he's a celebrated high ranking official #but ends up betraying his men #(5) runs rigged boxing matches or something. mob boss esque.#(3) is literally looking down his nose at me I have never seen a more smarmy and punchable face #oh my god the tech nerd is catholic and writes alternate history novels

I must say, it's pretty poetic that I've gotten to season 6 of Vampire Diaries right before another solar eclipse happens in America. I certainly didn't plan it, but it does feel like my timing is very appropriate with this one. I do have questions about the accuracy of the eclipse portrayal in the show, though. I mean, a solar eclipse did in fact happen on May 10, 1994, and it was visible across much of the country, so that much is accurate. But I don't think Mystic Falls would've had quite as good of a view as they show it having. For reference, here's a map of the May 1994 eclipse path (credit: timeanddate.com):

And, if you'll remember, Mystic Falls is like two hours from my old hometown just a stone's throw north of Lynchburg, Virginia, as seen on the locator spell map (this one's all over tumblr, forgive me for not remembering what blog I grabbed it from):

So if you zoom in on the timeanddate map and pick somewhere closeish to there:

It looks like Mystic Falls would be getting a little over 77% coverage or so. It's also worth noting that the '94 eclipse was an annular eclipse, not a total eclipse like tomorrow's eclipse. That still means that the moon went directly in front of the sun, but it does mean that it was small enough/far enough from earth that you didn't quite get full coverage of the sun (thanks to weather.gov for the nifty graphic):

So, I'm not positive whether it would've looked quite as dark as was shown in the show:

Although, I must admit, in this video I found on youtube of the '94 eclipse, (part of me is shocked to find footage from then but I know I shouldn't be like yes they had cameras in the 90s) it actually looks more similar than I expected it to look, but I imagine it was most likely filmed within the path of totality:

But also, when Kai takes Bonnie to Portland, don't they see the eclipse again there? I couldn't find that clip on youtube just now, but Portland barely had any eclipse--only 42-43% coverage, so it would've been way milder of a visual effect, barely any dimming in the sky noticeable without eclipse glasses.

The funny thing is, the area where I live is going to be sitting right around 80% coverage tomorrow. I was lucky enough to get to travel to Missouri for the 2017 eclipse to get into the path of totality, but I'm afraid that it hasn't worked out for me to do so this year, which is immensely disappointing to me as an astronomy enjoyer, but I do still plan to go to an eclipse party and I'm going to start saving to try and get to Spain for the next total eclipse in 2026, which is going to be right around my 30th birthday (screaming). Anyways, it isn't great, but here's my best picture from the '17 eclipse:

I didn't even have a smartphone yet then, because despite it being 2017, I was somewhat of a luddite, so I had the purple flip phone I so stubbornly clung to and a point-and-click Nikon, but I still think this picture is pretty cool for what it is. Here's the zoom in so you can really see that ring of fire (and my shaking hands doubling the image):

Obviously you can find thousands of better eclipse pictures online, but that one's still special to me because it's mine. Anyways, I'll report back with smart phone pictures from whatever I see of the 80% total eclipse tomorrow to compare and contrast with Mystic Falls's 70% annular eclipse of the 90s, because from what I've heard it's going to be much less impressive than full totality was, but I've yet to watch a partial solar eclipse, so I'll just have to find out. Also, if you happen to have any vampiric loved ones trapped in a magical prison dimension who you need help freeing during the eclipse tomorrow, let me know and I'll see what I can do! ;) Hahaha. Anyways, happy eclipse everyone, and may we all possess sufficient self restraint to avoid eye damage (says the woman who has looked at the sun unprotected so many times and is probably going to go blind because of it some day. I know what I've done lol. Don't be me.)

5. What do you keep in mind when writing a particular character? Since there's no character specified, I'll just go with the general things I keep in mind for all characters. The most important thing for me is that their dialogue fits them – like, it has to be their voice. Rereading, rewording, and rewriting dialogue is so important to me, so the whole thing doesn't sound like the same character speaking. I also have certain things I write on the first draft that end up sounding unnatural later. Such as Romano swearing too much (yes, it's possible), Spain starting his sentences with "Ah" and ending with a "haha," and the list goes on. A funny thing is that I actively avoid Prussia using awesome. He'll say sweet, cool, great etc., but his awesome counter is very low. Because I hate when a fanfic has him saying it all the time. It needs to have impact. It needs to actually be awesome.

13. What character took the most research? This is hard, because I don't... I don't do character research? Not really, at least? I do historical research for plot and idea purposes and sometimes check out fanart or other fanfiction for a ship I'm not as familiar with if I plan to write it (such as when I introduced nyo Russia in Birdbrains), but I don't do a lot of dedicated character research. I might look up canon heights, eye colours, and other stuff, but I'm not sure that counts. Spamano just lives rentfree in my head, I don't do research for their personalities. I do research for the plots I want to do, or history I'm interested in. Like, I've read a lot about history, but it was because I wanted to learn the history of something, not because I wanted to use it for Hetalia fanfiction. I just also end up using it for Hetalia fanfiction.

26. Any Hetalia AUs that live rent free in your head? Every Hetalia AU I write or plan to write is living there, of course. Not a lot of canon ones though. I stole these characters, they are my dolls to play with now!
