Okay smartass how would you fix Bingqiu if you had your way?
If you actually want to know you could do to be less of a rude little shit about it, anon, but all right.
This is not about 'fixing' anything. Bingqiu is a wildly popular ship and a lot of people enjoy the exact kind of delusional insanity these two have about each other and that's honestly great. Love it for them. Not my cup of tea though.
I think the easiest and fastest way to make them sort their shit out and maybe put them in a position where I might actually be interested in what's going on with them is to take the protagonist halo away. Maybe the System short circuits, maybe it just gets automatically turned off after the extras, don't know don't care.
A lot of Shen Qingqiu's self delusions are fueled by his unshakeable belief that Luo Binghe, being The Protagonist, is Perfectly Fine the way he is. Binghe is the Protagonist, so when there are no character development or obligatory angst events going on he is happy and healthy and a slightly charred good boy and Shen Qingqiu is The Happy Wife who dotes on his hubby and Everything Is Right In The World. Endless honeymoon with their responsibilities only coming to bother them every once in a while. And it makes it way too easy for Binghe to cover up that he's still hurt, still unstable and still insecure by what went down because Shen Qingqiu is willing to take him at face value when he presents his insecurities as just being shameless neediness for his husband. Of course he happily indulges Binghe! But that isn't really helping with the core of the problem now, does it?
Like, Binghe takes steps towards ensuring Shen Qingqiu's mental wellbeing even at the cost of his own as soon as Maigu Ridge is over when he takes him back to the sect. Shen Qingqiu tries too, in his own way (the entire segment in the tombs is all about him putting himself in very real danger for Binghe's sake) but at the same time, this is a guy who completely missed the writing on the wall that Bingge was deeply unhappy in PIDW. As long as he can hold onto his internal picture that The Protagonist Suffered A Lot But He Is Fine Now I don't think he can really offer the right kind of emotional support for Binghe to actually heal from what happened to him and move on to a healthier frame of mind.
If you take the protagonist halo away, then first of all Binghe can, you know, suck a little. Or a lot, actually. The world not making excuses for him and him being a little defanged would be good for him. He gets really nothing he actually wants from being the protagonist - Shen Qingqiu will love him anyway. Mobei-jun will still stick around to back him up and help him out, because he's still Shang Qinghua's favorite fictional son and Qinghua is happy to see Binghe happy, just, you know, somewhere way over there where he can't get jealous tsundere over Cucumber bro and maybe murder him about it. Sha Hualing is still going to be his buddy because he's her best source of human trivia and the writing inspiration for her girlfriend. Not having to be demon emperor and getting more time to spend with his husband would be a relief.
But he would have to be more aware of other people because he's not above them anymore. Maybe even forced to make a few new friends to get by. And his mask will fail and Shen Qingqiu will have to see him for what he is: just Luo Binghe, still hurt and still confused half demon, who loves him very much, but can't make sense of him and is afraid that he will be left behind or pushed away without explanation again and that's kinda Shen Qingqiu's own damn fault.
And Shen Qingqiu can't hold onto his delusions about The Protagonist. He can't willfully ignore that things are not fine with Binghe because he's not the Protagonist anymore and the world only allows that special privilege for the Protagonist. Binghe is just a guy now and he has so many heart demons he needs help with. His trauma from the abyss or Xin Mo can't be brushed off with 'oh that's just part of his blackening he's fine now' anymore. And it might need a little bit of adjusting to internalize that these problems have always been here just below the surface, but Shen Qingqiu genuinely loves Binghe and would want to help him become happier and more stable in any way he can.
Binghe becoming part of the world in a way that's one person among many - building a support network! maybe befriending new demons or actually getting to know and making up with the QJ disciples or finding common ground with LQG and becoming sparring buddies - rather than a protagonist in a sea of NPCs is a lot more interesting to me than whatever he has going on at the end of canon. And Shen Qingqiu can be there with him on that journey, because he already started unlearning the sense of unreality the System conditioned into him, but he still has a long way to go.

ASK MEME HUH? 😏 prepare yourself here :^)
okay okay so. (for the kid fic ask) 2 or 8 (toddler) or 3 (teenager)? with any parent child combination you feel like
I know this is a prime chance to write some angst but I have entered silly mode at some point lately so you get AU silliness only SLIGHTLY tinged with angst, I hope that's alright ssadkajshdnkbfk
(It also got longer than I'd anticipated, F in the chat for us all)
Kid/Parent Fic Prompts
3. "Everyone makes mistakes, it's okay."
"Hey, August, your dad said I'd find you..." Emma trails off, stopping halfway through the door as she takes in the scene before her. "...here. What are you guys doing?"
To Marco's credit, his son is, in fact, sitting in the shed just like the man had said. The only issue is that he's not alone - in fact, a swooping three of the kids in his care are crowded around him, typewriter pushed to the side as they peer at something taking center place on the table.
August looks up from it momentarily to shoot her a slight grin, which does nothing to soothe her confusion. "Scientific research."
"On a lamp? Thought that had been patented a while ago."
"Yes, but this is a monad lamp. We're trying to figure out if there's actually a cricket in here."
Emma's gaze moves to the object in question, eyebrows raised. "And that other guy's letting you? Isn't this literally attached to his hip most of the time?"
"We traded for the day!" The smallest of the puppets chirps excitedly, all but bouncing on August's knee. "Gina's showing him around, and we get to hang out with Gemini!"
"I see."
The problem with these kids, in Emma's mind, is that while they might have fairly contrasting personalities, there's something in them that betrays their connection even at first glance. Cedar's a sweet girl and the strange one with the metal arm is prone to brooding, and the two younger boys (she needs to find better nicknames to differentiate them than Big One and Little One, honestly - they bring to mind Tweedledee and Tweedledum, sometimes, but they'd probably take offense to that) are just unruly children like any other, and still they all share faint traces of past events that make her understand August a little bit more.
Right now, for example, the man has got a boy perched on his lap and Cedar leaning onto his shoulder, the other boy sitting on the tabletop with his ruined legs dangling over the edge, and yet they're all looking at her like they're about to tell her to take a leap of faith...or blow something up and ask her for help, at least, given Big Pinocchio's tendencies and those of the guy they call P. Emma should be backing away before it's too late, honestly.
"Doesn't that thing talk, anyway?" She hears herself asking instead, as if that were the most pressing matter. "Can't you just ask?"
"He's recharging," Cedar replies, ever the most helpful of them all. "That's why P left him at home. Grandfather said Gemini's not allowed to be around us unsupervised anymore, since the last time he tried to teach some nasty words to-"
"Hey!" The Pinocchio sitting on the table glares at her, a thunderous look on his face. "That's none of your business! Don't be a snitch!"
"It's not snitching if it's true! You only want to know because you've got a point to prove, anyway."
The boy sniffs haughtily, turning away. "I don't need to prove anything. I'm right. We've all got a cricket, so P should have one too."
"You're wrong. I never got a cricket, and Dad doesn't have one either-"
Emma can clearly see August barely stifling a laugh, the bastard. "Don't let Jiminy hear you say that, Cedar- I can assure you, he helped me quite a lot before he got a degree."
"I don't have a cricket," the little one says, beaming, seemingly unbothered by the squabble. "I just have Gina."
"Gina counts."
"Gina does not count, she's a duck." Cedar sighs, shaking her head of dark curls. "Why are you so worried about this, anyway? Your cricket isn't here, either."
One would expect Big Pinocchio to have a snappish retort for that, as well, and yet, none comes. Instead he seems to curl even further into himself, his glower even deeper, like a turtle tucking head and tail into its shell. "Yeah, but he was there," he mutters, much lower than before. "No one else could see him, so they thought I was making him up, but I wasn't. He was real, and I wasn't crazy."
The two adults exchange a look, the mood grown a tad more somber all of a sudden. This, perhaps, is the other thing these children have in common, and it's much less amusing than the first one - they have had some awful experiences already, for being so young, and sometimes they mention it in such an offhanded way, it sounds like everyday stuff, like making the bed or running errands.
Maybe it was everyday stuff for them, before. That doesn't make it more reassuring, either.
"That's okay." August sounds softer, too, as he leans closer to the boy and tries to meet his eyes. "We know you're not crazy. Those boys in your old school- they didn't have the full picture. Everyone makes mistakes, when they don't have the full picture."
And that, a smidge more teasing, once he has finally gotten Pinocchio to look up: "And I mean everyone. You know, Emma here, she didn't believe I was made of wood, in the beginning. Guess who proved her wrong later."
"Seriously?" Emma exhales heavily, relieved that her friend has been able to handle the situation so well and yet resigned to the fact that August continues to be, well, himself. "You only butt into this argument to throw me to the wolves?"
"You wouldn't want me to get in the way of a scientific debate, do you?"
If this were a normal conversation between the two of them, she would tell him to stop being so cheeky; but as it is, there are three more people in the room with them right now, people who have barely stopped looking wary and guarded before returning to their analysis of an otherworldly piece of machinery. There is little Emma can do beside playing along, distracting them from whatever effects the past still has on them all. She owes them that, at least.
"Alright," she says, dragging a spare stool closer and finding a spot near the table, mindless to how Cedar moves to lean on her instead, as is the nature of things.
"Let's crack this, then. I came over to ask something else, but you guys got to me. Show me what you've got, Gemini."

Old Fashion Cupcake – Music in Episode 1
Apparently, some of y’all like reading me talk about music and @skamskada asked me for some thoughts on Old Fashion Cupcake. I actually already had roughly 3 pages of notes (now 4 oops) solely on the first episode of this show. So I guess I’ll be doing a musical analysis of the first episode if I can ever decipher what I wrote.
***But first a disclaimer! I am not a musician. I’m just someone with a tiny, minuscule background in music with a somewhat decent ear. I am also kind of an idiot and I will likely get some things wrong. So remember everyone to take everything I say with a grain of salt and that just because I said it and I maybe sound a little bit smart about it, doesn’t mean I am inherently right. I encourage everyone to always form their own opinions about music and shows and everything. Now that the disclaimer is done...time to write this post.
SO soundtracks. Before diving into the beauty that is the Old Fashion Cupcake soundtrack, we should really talk about what makes a good soundtrack. This show has, in my opinion, the best soundtrack of any BL. Not because it makes me want to run and search for the songs to listen to them on repeat for hours on end, but because by definition, the soundtrack just works for this show in a way that soundtracks typically don’t for most BL. (Here is little, tiny a post I made in April about some other shows with good soundtracks for those who are interested). Well Rae, what makes a good soundtrack? I can hear you all asking. A good soundtrack is one that sets and/or matches the tone of the show. A good soundtrack can elevate a good show and make it even better. A good soundtrack can, potentially, save a bad show (not always though). A bad soundtrack can ruin a good show. A bad soundtrack and a bad show? Well, that’s just sad. Throw the whole thing in the trash. So what makes Old Fashion Cupcake stand out to me when it comes to soundtracks? It’s not just that it matches the tone of the show perfectly, but the soundtrack is blended into the tone. The scenes, the sets, the characters, the music, the everything all becomes one cohesive unit. And that’s throughout the show. Each scene, each character, each episode, everything was so carefully done. So deliberately chosen. The soundtrack can even help us better understand Nozue and Togawa and their internal struggles.
Now I have to make an attempt to decipher my...holy shit...4 pages of chicken scratch. That’s how I know I had THOUGHTS about this. Normally my writing is neat and legible unless I’m too excited and writing too fast because I can’t get the thoughts out quick enough. For the sake of length because this post is already getting very long. I will attempt to give a general analysis of the music in the first episode and will probably make another post later this week going more into specifics and providing examples.
The Old Fashion Cupcake soundtrack very deliberately uses silence, repetitive notes/chords/whathaveyou (very good music term there Rae, way to go) to set or even amplify the tone of the show. At the beginning it has an almost apathetic feel to it. Nozue is just going about his routine and the music reflects that. The music plays as we hear Nozue’s inner monologue, but there is silence when he’s cooking. There is also silence when Nozue is actively working. We learn later on in the show that Nozue enjoys cooking and although he feels stuck in a rut in his job, he doesn’t hate it. Silence in this show is used to indicate Nozue’s contentment as opposed to his apathy. There is no music playing that means that his inner dialogue his silent as he simply allows himself to enjoy something like cooking. The silence indicates he’s able to shut off his brain for awhile and let himself simply exist in the moment. When the music comes back, its the same repetitive 3 beat rhythm with 2 notes. This constant repetition is telling us, whether we are aware of the music doing this or not, that Nozue is stuck in his routine. He repeats his days and they are ultimately, the same. He feels trapped by the rhythm, but he is also resigned to it. It’s comforting in a way. There is a comfort in routine and Nozue is telling himself that again and again despite his desire to try that cafe, to eat those sweets, or to take that promotion. He feels safe in the repetition. But occasionally, a note gets replaced by something different letting the audience know that Nozue is not entirely happy in his routine and that he does have those desires. He can convince himself that he is happy as he is, but with that slight change in the music, we now have more insight into Nozue’s character than he even has of himself.
When Togawa finally makes an appearance in the show, the music changes. It’s subtle, but it’s there if you listen for it. Multiple notes are changed from the repetitive trill. This suggests Togawa will be the change that Nozue needs. He will match Nozue’s pace and his music, but Togawa will bring his own flavor to it so to speak. Those two are operating on similar wavelengths, but with slightly different outlooks. Nozue is apathetic, while Togawa performs the same routine, but he’s willing to break out of it. And he will take Nozue with him. This contrasts to the upbeat and peppy music from the gossipy coworkers. They are not on the same wavelength as Nozue and Togawa. Their music simply doesn’t match. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just different. The peppy music doesn’t feel out of place in the show though because it’s matching the scene that is focusing on the coworkers. Nozue and Togawa might be set apart, but they aren’t out of place with everyone and everything else. They are simply different and can exist in harmony with others.
The reason I love the soundtrack so much is how it reflects the characters. As the characters adapt and change, so does the music. I don’t know who was in charge of the music for this show, but they did a phenomenal job and I truly hope that they work on more BL. This post has gotten outrageously long now but I do have more to say and this is only about episode 1! What a show. If y’all haven’t watched Old Fashion Cupcake and you enjoyed my analysis, please go watch it. It’s truly a gem of a show. And it’s not just the soundtrack that’s great. I just happen to be in love with the soundtrack.
