I actually did this drawing a while ago but when I finished I didnt like it so I didnt end up posting it but now looking back, I still don't like it but I spent a long time on it soooo, here's Thomas as a Siren and below is some Info dump about this Au I made
Since I am also a sleepy bois inc fan, I got inspired by dark sbi mermaid fanfics and decided to test it out on the Maze Runner and see what it leads me to. So, just a heads up, the Maze Runner characters in this Au are more morally gray because they follow their animalistic side more than their human side.
In this Au, they in a hierarchy and every mermaid lives in their own pod (a community)
Hierarchy goes like; Leaders, Sirens, Children, Protectors, and Hunters/Gatherers
It is not a requirement to have a Siren in the Pod but it does make the pod seem stronger if they do have one
There tends to be only one siren in each pod because in this AU they are cannibals and are not afraid of eating another siren from their own pod or a different one
The color of a siren represents what types of power their voice holds, Thomas in particular has the ability to manipulate people’s sadness and grief, he can make others see hallucinations of loved dead ones or intensify someone's state of sadness/depression/loneliness. The jewelry around his neck is a symbol of his status and showing how important his voice is.
Short plotline; Thomas is a lone siren who does not have a pod. He gets invited to join the Gladers pod by Alby but problems arise when Thomas realizes that they already have a siren in their pod, Ben. At first they would stay far away from each other, with Ben always hanging in the front of the Pod and Thomas in the back but one day Ben does end up attacking Thomas and Thomas ends up killing him.
Since they run more on instincts and animalistic feelings, Thomas did not really feel bad at first because he did it in order to survive but he soon realizes how sad the pod is since he can feel their sadness. He decides to permanently stay in their pod and promises to protect them as a way to make amends
In the beginning, Thomas does not have a good relationship with anyone in the Pod except for Chuck and Alby. With him and Chuck having a brotherly relationship and him and Alby having more of a stable one. Gally and him absolutely hated each other but over time they warmed up to each other. Newt, Minho, and Thomas had a distant relationship until Thomas ended up saving Minho from mermaid hunters, which caused him to earn trust from Minho, Newt, Frypan, and Winston.
Sirens are very different from normal mermaids. They age the same but mature mentally faster than Mermaids. Their diets are very different with them being mostly carnivores while mermaids are omnivores. Mermaids are sort of okay with humans, they especially have soft spots for the human kids but Sirens won’t hesitate to kill one. They are more private about their species and do not let any humans near them unless a human somehow manages to earn their trust. Aris, Teresa, and Rachel are humans that Thomas tolerates but he doesn’t like it when they get too close. Mermaids can not survive without a Pod but Sirens can and they choose willily to join one if they want to, they just tend to do things on their own in the Pod and sometimes listen to the leader which is why it’s important they have a great relationship
The characters do all act the same as they do in the book and movies, but with just a slight readjustment with their bio instincts. Thomas is still curious and oblivious but now he just has a little bit of animal instincts added to him, this applies to the rest of the characters
Free fee to add in your own headcanons or even make your own story of this. I probably won’t talk about this Au again unless someone asks me too and don’t mind the big ass among us, I just like adding them in my drawings sometimes.
(p.s. Sorry for any spelling errors or if I just straight up don't make sense. I have dyslexia and I try my best to correct my errors)

PONY ASK BLAST!
I haven't finished MYM myself despite enjoying the first G5 movie. Partially because I find it a little too babyish in comparison (which y'know, its fine that it's targetted towards littler kids, although G4 and Bluey prove you don't HAVE to dumb it down to be fun, educational, and memorable), and because I really dislike the choice to make Opaline the reason ponies turned on each other. Like yeah, it wasn't PERFECT but idk, as a black person I think the first movie at least got closer to addressing bigotry by showing it isn't JUST antagonists like Sprout and Phyllis spouting off bigoted shit- even the good guys Sunny and Izzy had preconcieved notions of the other races too! But going "Nah, nah actually this random alicorn brought back racism because evil" reaaaally cheapens it. But moving onto my point: what do you think about Opaline? I'm curious to see your opinion. :3c
i ended up watching the rest with my little cousins (who coincidentally are how i started watching bluey lol) and was...disappointed. it wasn't much of a love letter to g4 as i think they wanted it to be and as a plotline on its own, it's weak and doesn't really hold the thematic relevance that at the very least even the weakest g4 villains had. it's cute, but i can't blame people for finding it so hollow when g4 genuinely managed to pack a lot of wit, care, and geniune passion into its writing (ah. before um. the final seasons that is. ppl are talking about cozy glow again on twitter and im reminded of The Agonies).
yeah, was not impressed by "bigotry is ackshually caused by One Bad Person". i'm not asking for an indepth examination of structural bigotry from thy miniature equus, but i think a lot of cartoons and things for kids have been able to take these concepts and present these more complex ideas in ways that can still be understood. one could say, it's better if we let kids understand these things as how they are than dumb it down.
idk i know it's for young kids but i am gonna say my little cousins LOVE g4 more than g5 for a reason :3c

Velma is bad, but...
Look. The show is not good. The memes are god tier. I’m gonna keep watching it. So here’s my complex opinion on the matter. I’m not watching it through official means so HBO is not getting any ad or sub revenue from me. I don’t pirate video games, but I do movies/shows/music because it’s easier and less time consuming. I was never a massive Scooby fan. The original cartoon predates me by an entire 20 years (1969 - I was born in ‘89). I’ve always known about it, it’s been in the peripheral of my media consciousness for my entire life. I think I saw one of the Live Action movies (the 2002 one, I was still in school). I probably caught a few episodes in my cartoon watching days but I’ve never been a puzzle solver and the “whodunnit” angle never grasped me. So I don’t have the nostalgia that the rest of the world seems to have, but I recognize character assassinations when I see one.
I admit I don’t hate Velma as much as the rest of the internet seems to.
I like the art style, admittedly. However I’ve caught some brief scenes where it looked rushed and less detailed and they just went with it. I actually quite enjoy the hallucinations, though they got a little less creative in episode 3 and 4 but they were also not a major focal point of the plot in either episode. Some jokes DO land. Some. Some jokes land, and then they turn around to ruin it. When Fred was taken to trial and the family tried to play up his innocent young boy shtick, they could have milked that for some real humor but instead he got water splashed on him and they went for a pretty low-bar Hitler joke instead. It was so close to a good joke. I’m not fond of the meta humor. I don’t like it when they made a dig at “adults watching cartoons”. Like bitch, this is a cartoon marketed towards adults. Why is there contempt for your target audience? And I’m a liberal, a leftist. I can handle some digs in our direction. GTA seems to do it the best, I had a giggle at the in-universe cartoon they had of the hero “Impotent Rage!”, making fun of Democrats ability to never really get anything done. I get the joke, it’s clever, it’s satire. But when characters in media stop the plot, and turn to the camera to complain about the patriarchy or whatever it irritates me. We all know the patriarchy is a thing. How about you have something clever to say. Episode 4 is a complete derailment of the plotline just to talk about women’s empowerment through attractiveness. The whole episode is just Velma figuring out that women’s empowerment can take different forms. It’s a fine message, but brought to us in a clunky and frankly, kind of annoying method. Especially since there’s supposed to still be a murder-mystery happening. Derailment is a thing that happens a lot in episodes 3 and 4. I didn’t hate episode 3 at all on its own. The first half had a lot of jokes I had a giggle at but it was just meandering around the plot to stop and figure out what Velma’s sexuality is (still inconclusive as of episode 4). I don’t mind a slow burn romance but fucking sort your shit out, show. I am “ehhhh” on Velma. I kinda like Daphne. I’m okay with Norville. He seems to be the most consistent source of jokes that don’t turn around on themselves. But Jesus, what they did to Fred should be a media crime. It’s just one of these situations where I feel like there’s some potential quality here buried under some really dogshit writing. I will not argue for a second that this is not a good show and I don’t think there’s anything any future episodes can do to retroactively “fix” the problems already present. I feel like a season 2 might have to do some heavy lifting (because I think I read somewhere that it’s already greenlit?) I still remain somewhat fascinated by it and I’m more curious to where the plot is going if it can stop stopping itself to turn towards the camera and stop hating on literally every viewer.

So, I’ve been thinking for awhile about how I’d like to see the WoT adapted into a series. Which books I’d condense into x number of seasons in my ideal world vs. how I think they’ll condense the books into the 8 seasons they’ll probably get.
For my ideal world, I’d want 10 seasons:
1: Basically what we’re already getting. EotW, plus bits of NS, TGH, and probably Mat getting healed from the dagger being pulled forward from TDR. Maybe. I’m still not sure what plotline they’re pulling from TDR
2: This is probably the most difficult season to adapt, as TGH and TDR are both very similar in their overall structure and their climaxes. We don’t need to keep three seasons where they all end in Rand “killing the Dark one.” So, for season 2, I think we’ll speed things up and have all the events of TGH and TDR end in a climax at Tear where Rand draws Callandor and kills Ishamael, plus Mat blows the Horn at some point. Possibly have the Seanchan attack Tear instead of over at Falme or wherever they first attacked in TGH. Maybe make there be some prophecy about the return being that they need to grab Callandor.
3-5: In my opinion, just basically do a season per book for books 4-6. Move plotlines around (or from previous or later books) as needed to make it work for TV.
6: I feel you can easily do CoS and PoD as one book. There’s some good stuff that happens in those books, despite what some might say. Definitely just doesn’t feel like they needed to be split up books.
7: This one is personally my favorite idea. Take the travesty that is WH and CoT being two separate books and make one season, and just cut anything that happens after the cleansing of saidin.
8: Start with all the stuff from CoT that happens after the cleansing, then go into all of the KoD stuff, which is all really good again.
9: Just combine TGS and ToM, since a lot of the buildup to AMoL is stuff that’s happening at the same time, just kind of told to us out of order.
10: You just gotta do AMoL in one season. Preferably with an episode for the entire Last Battle that is longer than entire the first harry potter movie. (The Last Battle is longer than the first Harry Potter book)
This is definitely my ideal breakdown of a WoT show, but the one we’re getting is probably gonna be capped at 8 seasons, assuming we even get past season 3. (Here’s hoping!) With that in mind, here’s my guess for how they’ll do their 8 seasons:
1: See above
2: See above, with an added comment that they might just cut the Seanchan out of this season and have them show up later, though I worry about where they would do that. Plus how would you have Egwene end up trapped like she is in TGH? That ends up being a pivotal moment for her character arc.
3: Still would have this be TSR by itself because that book has a lot going for it.
4: They’ll probably combine books 5+6 together into one season, with a shocking battle with Rahvin a few episodes in to kill off a bunch of people then bring them back then really kill Moiraine. Then Rand has to stumble on his own for the rest of the episodes before he ends up in a box and...yeah, Dumai’s Wells. If they do this route, I definitely think they have to have Rand start the Black Tower before he leaves for the Aiel Waste in season 3. Having the Black Tower start in this season and then be ready for Dumai’s Wells just feels way too rushed.
5: My best bet for this season is they’ll do a huge condensing of everything that happens after Dumai’s Wells until the Cleansing. Not sure how I feel about that, but it makes the most sense to me.
6-8: See seasons 8-10 above.
Maybe I’m being a bit optimistic with how they’d do those last few seasons, but I just feel like way too much happens in the last 4 books to condense them to shorter than 3 seasons.
Anyway, I am curious what anyone who sees this thinks of my thoughts. Let me know in the tags or notes! :D

Chapter 1
Cw: Hospital call, Panic, Blood mentions
Martin was out shopping when he got the call. His husband was in the hospital with a stab wound.
Martin was out shopping when he got the call. His husband was in the hospital with a stab wound. The rest of the call was a blur Martin couldn’t remember mostly save for ‘expected to make a recovery’ and ‘will need overnight treatment’. On autopilot, Martin went through the checkout with everything he had on hand and rushed home to drop the groceries off and grab things for Jon.
It was a struggle to get home, but once there, he was greeted by his husband, who was there for one and unstabbed for the other. Jon seemed to notice how upset Martin was and took the bags from him before they dropped to the floor and break something.
“Christ Jon.” Martin buried his face into Jon, like there was nothing that could get between them.
“What, what happened? Are you alright?”
“No. but you are. Shit.” Martin pulled away and went from panicked to fuming. “I just got a call you were stabbed? They-” Martin went to look at the number that called him.
Jon looked over and typed the number into his phone before Martin could do anything else.
“Hello, Yes. My husband just got a call from this number.” Jon held onto Martin’s hand, but otherwise looked like he was ready to fight whoever picked up. “Yes. He was told that I was there and I would like to know who thought that would be okay. Yes. Thank you. I can hold.”
While Jon waited, Martin pulled him into the kitchen with him. Martin was going to make tea. Then probably bake some bread, or something that would need a lot of kneading. He wasn’t proud of letting Jon handle it, but from what he overheard, it was the hospital. Martin wasn’t that great at dealing with doctors. He could, but both he and Jon knew it was a stressor for him.
Jon gave Martin a quick kiss on the cheek before leaning on the counter. “Ah, yes. My name is Jonathan Sims. My husband was contacted by someone in your office saying- Oh. oh? That doesn’t- Well I assure you I’m just as confused as you are.”
Martin looked over to see the anger fade from Jon’s face. He wished it was on speakerphone.
“Right. Well. I don’t know what to tell you. This is clearly a case of stolen-” Jon paused, Martin could make out that the person on the other end was more or less frantic, but he couldn’t make out the words.
“Right.” Jon continued. “If you are certain, we will be there soon.” Jon hung up and looked to Martin with a confused look. “The person they found, he- ah- apparently they connected him to my identity by way of fingerprints and his appearance matches what is on file more or less.”
“So we are going?” Martin turned off the kettle.
“I mean, aren’t you at least a little curious?”
“Not really, no. but you are.” Martin smiled at the spark in Jon’s eyes. “A mysterious stranger, out of nowhere. How could I fault you for wanting to sink your teeth into a story like that.”
“Worse case, it’s nothing and just a mistake, we leave and finish shopping?”
“Sounds alright I guess. Let’s get this over with.” Martin followed Jon’s lead. He really wasn’t happy about this, but he’d be lying if he wasn’t a little curious as well.
--------------
The doctor on staff came out to meet with Jon and Martin when they got there, and he went pale when looking at Martin. “Well, I suppose that answers who the other-.” He mumbled before speaking up. “Mr.Sims-Blackwood? Thank you for coming by.”
Jon nodded. “I suppose seeing me is proof that I wasn’t lying over the phone?”
“Indeed. I- This is rather odd. If you would follow me? I suppose your husband is also welcome to follow since he is your emergency contact.”
“I don’t know if that applies?” Martin didn’t want to stay behind, but he also didn’t feel right just waltzing into a stranger's room.
“Oh, this is very unprecedented in many ways, but after seeing you both, I hope you might be able to help make sense of this all.”
The doctor led them to the room where a sleeping Jon rested in the hospital bed. The other looked identical to Jon, save for he was much more scarred and looked slightly older.
The doctor didn’t bother grabbing for the chart. “We’ve been using your medical records as reference for him, everything from fingerprints to blood type are a perfect match. Only his weight is off from the ones on your records-”
There was a sudden commotion from the room next door.
“One moment.” The doctor rushed out leaving Jon and Martin with, well Jon.
“You think they are a doppelganger or one of the fair?” Martin hesitated to get closer.
Jon however didn’t seem to hold that same caution. “No. I doubt the hospital would fall for any trickery. Blood type matched so they are baseline human. Most likely why the doctor was like that.”
Jon stood by the double’s side and looked at him. There were so many scars. Mostly old. Whoever this was had been through quite a lot.
Martin came closer and took Jon’s hand. “You okay? You look stressed...”
“I am. Okay and stressed to clarify.” Jon gripped tightly. “He’s, whoever he is, has been through quite a lot, and that’s just the surface levels of it...”
“If he has nowhere to go, you are going to want to offer him our spare room aren’t you…” Martin sounded annoyed but also found.
“Just to rest a bit...I mean I’m sure it won’t come to that, but he shares my face. I don’t just want him on the streets...I mean, maybe I got some long-lost twin or something and that’s him. I was adopted and that is a common plotline in movies?”
Martin smiled. “I’m sure that is the most logical take on this situation.”
“One of the options. Though weird if he didn’t have his own papers if that was the- Oh,” Jon looked to the doorway. “Actually very unlikely, unless you also”
Before Jon could finish that thought, there was another Martin rushing into the room. One who looked just about as ragged at Jon’s other.
End notes:
if anyone is wondering why Jon's records matched this Jon, but Martin's didn't. There are reasons. I totally didn't forget that Jon would've gotten the same call and could've had them bump into each other at the hospital till after I wrote this... but that would've been a neat scene.
Also once the men talk, there is a naming convention they will be using. I haven't figured it out yet but having 2 Jon's and 2 Martins is hard. and having one be John isn't a route I'll be taking (but it was thought about....)

either shifu or sam for the meme?
Saaaam!
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character: !!!! I DIDN’T EXPECT HIM TO BE SO GREAT? :D Gosh Sam how did you manage to hit on so many niches I love, huh? Like. At first he was alright. It was just like “oh okay so we’ve got this straightforwardly happy-go-lucky ball of sunshine... not suuuuper my thing in this case, but I get why people would love him” (sdjnksdkjnsdkjnsdnkj I had no idea). And the fact that he seemed to actually put people off with how over-the-top friendly he is - that was an interesting touch where it’s like “oooh”. But you know exactly when my perspective transforms more. hhhh
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: I don’t actually - I mean, Sam/Guy is definitely really cute, but at most I only kind of ship it passively in the sense that I see other people getting really into it and I’m like “yeah! cool!! :D” like cheering on on the sidelines. When push comes to shove, I don’t actually have any Sam ships!
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Romantic or not, we can never forget Briefcase Buddies.
My unpopular opinion about this character: Ooh I don’t really know what’s unpopular. I wasn’t SUPER into his character at first, but I was absolutely willing to give him a chance as a character to endear himself to me (which he did, in a way that I totally didn’t expect, lol). But hmmm yeah, see I don’t think I know enough about what the prevailing opinions are to be able to know which I disagree with.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I’m a sucker for any sort of “foreshadowing” wherein Sam would do something obviously Morally And/Or Legally Dubious and have it glossed over at the time as either Rule Of Comedy, Typical In-World Zaniness, or Sam being seemingly oblivious as to having done anything wrong when he knows full well what he’s doing. My memory isn’t the best so I’m not sure how much of that we got in canon, but either way I would have loved more! Not even that but just. ahhh. love me some foreshadowing, or even just played around with the “secret” a little more once the audience has been clued in because then we can actually SEE the inherent dissonance of his seemingly innocent character playing out in real time. would also love some insight into either his other identities or how much he’s putting on an act. Obviously a lot of his stuff (the majority) is genuine, but hahaha I don’t knooow I’m rambling. I love highlighting the dissonance between supposed innocence and the reality of a character. I guess what I want from the next season is for the show to still acknowledge Sam’s criminal past/side, and to also do more to acknowledge the fact that he’d just been jumping from fake ID to fake ID for a long time. I don’t want it to be brushed over type thing yknow? There’s so much potential depth there to explore. Even if it’s just casually dropped into conversation among the characters...
Favorite friendship for this character: You have the obvious Briefcase Buddies, but you know what, I want some Sam and Michellee friendship. Let our dear vegan be good buds with the egg&ham-eater! :P
My crossover ship: Lol yeah nah as I said I technically don’t have any actual Sam ships XD
Shifu...
003 | Give me a character & I will tell you:
How I feel about this character: Oh, everyone knows, surely. XD
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Nah
My unpopular opinion about this character: Non-Shifu fans do not seem to realise how secretly fun-loving this guy actually is. At least, they didn’t prior to the third movie, which surprises me. A bunch of stuff about his character in the third movie was Always There, it was simply repressed and/or less obvious before.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: This is kinda random but I was kinda disappointed about the Po/Mei Mei arranged marriage plotline getting dropped from kfp3 because I’d wondered prior to the movie’s release if we’d get to see any of Shifu’s reaction to it. Hm. (Well I did say it was random, lol). Honestly, I do have things I’d love to see happen but I do not trust them to necessarily be pulled off properly. Because I am incredibly picky about how his character is written, a “wish would happen” with his character at this point for me is to let him Rest. Oh right, I just remembered. Since they actually joked once about making three movies about Shifu’s backstory, but it was only ever a joke. Well I certainly wouldn’t turn another three movies down if they were well-written lol. Honestly the story of how Shifu started learning Kung Fu and started on that path is shrouded in mystery, (Inb4 LOA because I Do Not Care about LOA, LOA is irrelevant and does not exist as far as I’m concerned) so I’d really love to just know a little about his history in the first place. Every time he mentions that line about leaving his family to learn kung fu in Kung Fu Panda Holiday I absolutely BURN with curiousity you have no idea. One single throwaway line from Po in a random youtube video about Shifu failing maths in the second grade (I think it was?) just also makes me very curious about his childhood in general, what even the deal was and what the situation was like prior to him learning and mastering kung fu. There’s a whooole untold story there :’( the secrets of my fave...
Favorite friendship for this character: Po
My crossover ship: ...lol let’s not, his line in the deleted scene was pure vindication though.

"i feel like being bitter and listing off all the things that the 90s show changed about the original stories" as a relative newcomer to moomin-related stuff, i'm curious... what *did* the 90s show change??
*rubs hands because I love being insufferable*
(Minor disclaimer that this is mostly done in good nature. I understand almost every show that is adapted from existing content is gonna change stuff to suit their story-telling needs. But I am annoyed that some who praise the 90s anime think the new series is bad simply for doing things differently when that show, and nearly every one prior to it, has also put their own spin on things.)
There are 24 episodes of Tanoshii Moomin Ikka (plus a movie) based on the books by Tove Jansson, and I think 11 based on the comic strips she wrote. It would take a long time to cover every single detail in every single episode, so I am mainly going to discuss those that have changes I find more significant, disappointing, personally distressing, or just plain baffling.
(A second disclaimer: I have not read any entire comic stories past the point where Tove stopped working on them. There are some episodes based on strips created exclusively by her brother Lars, The Vampire and Artists in Moominvalley being two examples. I will be skipping those, as well as Bouken Nikki episodes, as I have yet to thoroughly watch each one on account of so few being based on Tove’s work and the headaches they induce lmao. Nitpicks from fans who have read Lars’ strips in full are welcome.)
Now without further ado, let the fussing begin~
01 Spring in Moominvalley: This follows the basic storyline from the first two chapters of Finn Family, but with some notable changes. Snufkin at this point woke up from hibernation along with the rest of the family, Little My had yet to be introduced, and Snork - a child like the rest of the main cast - lived with his sister and the rest of the kids in the Moominhouse. The entire subplot of him being an inventor is merely an invention of the anime.
Moomintroll, in the book, spends a lot more time in transformed body. As he believes his friends are playing a new game when they fail to recognize him, he makes up a story about being “The King of California”. He repeatedly pretends to insult Moomin (himself), and in a touching display of devotion his own friends beat him up to defend his honour.
02 The Magic Hat: Continuing on with a scene based on the later half of chapter 2, we see Moomin rescue Snorkmaiden from the Ant Lion, and along with Snufkin, decide to trap him in the magical hat. In the original story however, Moomin and Snork trap the him. This was rather unprovoked, though Moomin cites a moment from a previous book (read all about it in The Moomins and the Great Flood!) where the Ant Lion allegedly kicked sand in Mamma’s eyes. The gang then takes the hat back inside for more “experiments”, and after making a mess, the adults decide it best to dispose of the hat in the river.
Much like in the story, the hat is soon recovered by Moomin and Snufkin, though a chapter where they hide it in a cave and and end up frightening the Muskrat (who uses it as a shelf for his dentures) is absent. It then continues to the scene where Moominhouse is briefly overgrown with plants. Aside from this happening sooner than it did in the book, and the premature appearance of the Hobgoblin, and the missing Mameluke hunt, and the part where all the children play in the jungle, I think it’s pretty true to that chapter!
03 Discovery of a Wrecked Ship:  First off, I wanna say I’m mostly including this episode on my list just to make it clear that Snufkin’s random sexist comments towards Snorkmaiden and Little My are missing from the book. There is a chapter where him and Moomin go ambling up some rocks, but “the girls” are thankfully absent from this scene.
So then they discover an abandoned boat and the rest of the episode is padded with scenes where they repair it. A charming spectacle, I’m sure, but also absent from the book as the boat they find is already in pristine condition. Shame that Snufkin never got to share his idea for the ship’s name, (it was Lurking Wolf aha ha ha) but that might be for the best.
07 The Suitcase: As seen in episode 06, Thingumy and Bob arrived in Moominvalley. They bring with them stolen goods and and the mother of Grimace, who seeks to recover said goods. Snufkin, once again letting everyone down, decides that a gentle female should speak to them about the contents of their suitcase and soon Snorkmaiden is assigned to the task. Instead the book features a trial sequence, which really helps hammer in the metaphor. Everyone takes part and Sniff acts as prosecutor of behalf of the Groke, who appears and is willing to trade the treasure in exchange for the magical top hat (NOT a pretty scallop).
08 The Hobgoblin’s Magic: Moomin hears that his wondrous wooden woman has washed up on the shores of Moominvalley. But when he rushes to the beach, he finds nothing but sand and disappointment waiting for him. This sends him spiraling into a brief yet no less deep depression which is cured only when Thingumy and Bob share their contents of their secret suitcase. The novel was much more reasonable however. He was saddened by the loss of Snufkin who had skipped the valley for the first time, promising (as we all know) to return on the first day of Spring.
And then there is a fabulous summer party thrown by the family after the recovery of Moominmamma’s handbag. This part is true to the story, at the very least. But the party in the book is much more fantastical, with dancing, music (from America of all places), punch served in darling sea shells, and everyone - right down to the tiniest forest critter - is invited, and gets to make a wish when the magic man arrives.
09 An Invisible Friend / 10 The Invisible Child: I wouldn’t say that these episodes, featuring the famous character from Tales of Moominvalley, have any life-ruining changes from the original story. But since no episode is complete without a bit of drama, or a pointless cameo from Snufkin, a scene where Stinky traps Ninny with the intention of having her assist in his robberies has been written in. And Little My’s comment regarding the aunt in the English dub, where she states “I hope you told her she hurt Ninny’s feelings!” seems uncharacteristically gentle in comparison to her asking if Too-Ticky “bashed her head in”.
13 The Last Dragon on Earth: As mentioned in the entry above, some episodes will include new subplots or elements for the sake of drama and action. This episode is another example of that, but otherwise it has only minor tweaks. Snufkin states that “the cards” have told him he should leave Moominvalley early if he catches x number of such-and-such a fish, but that storyline is exclusive to this show.
14 Our Neighbor is a Touch Teacher: This episode is based on snippets of the comic strip “Moominmamma’s Maid”, but scraps the storyline containing the titular character from the strip, which is nearly all of it. Instead, it is entirely focused on the Moomin’s new neighbor, Mrs Fillyjonk, a strict and uptight mother of three.
After the Moomin’s welcome party leaves Mrs Fillyjonk fearing for her life, she forbids her children from playing with the Moomin brood. They sneak away anyway. A bunch of death defying stunts happen, courtesy of Stinky. Mrs Fillyjonk plans to leave the valley, but the kids have none of that. This is almost an original story, save for the existence of a party.
16 A Close Encounter with Aliens: Once again we have an episode based on the comics. It follows the basic plotline of the Moomins caring for a stranded Martian child.  But a lot of wackiness was cut for time, including invisible Moomins pranking valley residents, a flying fire brigade, and Moomin shrinking down with Mamma, who later bites a Fillyjonk child. Time used for an inserted chase scene with Stinky (one of many across the tv series) feels could’ve been better spent on some of the fun stuff mentioned in my previous sentence.
17 A Change of Air: And yet another comic-based episode, this one taken from “Moomin and Family Life”, which happens to be my personal favourite comic so this analysis may sound bitterer than others. The episode cuts the beginning of the strip, where we see a lonely parent-less Moomin contemplate suicide before being reunited with his long lost Moominmamma and Moominpappa. The comic is a completely different entity from the books and adjustments must be made, so this decision is understandable. But the following choice? Less so.
The episode instead starts with Pappa complaining that nothing exciting ever happens, and I won’t remind him of the events from episode 16 because everyone brings that up. Stinky overhears plans of doing something to entertain him, and during the night makes a set of giant footprints leading to the sea. Whereas in the comic strip, the “giant” prints are innocently left by Snufkin who was wearing boot too big for he gotdamn feet. He nearly perishes for this grave mistake.
Strips where Moominmamma and Moominpappa hang out in a cave, Moomin sheds a few tears tears, and Snufkin offers some half hearted words of comfort provide a basis for following scenes in the episode. But antics with Moomin and friends trying to foil Aunt Jane, who angrily travelled to the Moominhouse after being pranked by Pappa, are sadly missing.
24 Hurry Up Snufkin: The part where Snufkin meets and later names the forest creature Teetywoo, is based on the short story “The Spring Tune”. There are many potential gripes one can have about such a brief scene.
A lot of the dialogue between the two characters reflects what is said in the short story, but what the episode sorely lacks are Snufkin’s feelings. Gone are his shouts and snaps, his grumpiness about being disturbed, his regret when he lashes out, his desperation to find Teetywoo again. His famous line “I’ll come when it suits me” is “cried violently”, making me wonder how it ever became an inspirational quote (oh wait I know). In favour of portraying Snufkin as cool and chill, the anime sometimes ends up making him look more like an emotionless bump on a log.
The plotline of Snufkin being late to return because he is trying to compose a new song has been cut, on account of either his lack of talent or lack of music budgeting.
25 The Lighthouse / 26 The Day the Lighthouse Lit Up: These episodes actually combine elements of two different stories: the comic strip “Moomin and the Sea”, and the similarly titled novel “Moominpappa at Sea”. Lacking most of the typical shenanigans from the strips, or bleak themes from the book, these episodes feel more like a slightly above-average family outing.
The episodes seems to lean more towards the comic, where Moominpappa takes on the job of lighthouse keeper as inspiration for his writing, and Moomin is terrorised by an equally frightened ghost. Too-Ticky unfortunately is missing from the episodes, alone with the scenes where she shares some spooky suggestions with the spectre, and where Snorkmaiden fakes her own drowning to help Moomin feel brave.
Borrowing from the books, we meet both the former lighthouse keeper and a little boy named Toft, who apparently got very lost on his way to auditions for a “Moominvalley in November” episode. The episode scraps the element from the book of Moominpappa making the entire family miserable because he has some deluded fantasy about protecting and providing for them on his own, as well as a heart wrenching subplot involving the Groke, which I will not spoil for those considering reading it. But know this: there will be tears.
28 The Floating Theatre / 29 The Lost Children / 30 Midsummer: This three-parter is based on “Moominsummer Madness”, which is kind of an interesting book. Taking place smack dab in the middle of the series, we see it move away from the more lighthearted tones of the early stories, and begin the shift towards the less fantastical and more serious themes of the later books. But it isn’t quite there yet. And being written around the time Tove still worked on the comic series, some parts of the book would not seem out of place if drawn in her strips.
The most noticeably difference between the original story and anime episodes is the change of the cast. With the number of characters and subplots happening at once in the book, it was inevitable that some unlucky sod would get scrapped from the story - three sods in fact, by the names of Mymble, Misabel, and Whomper. Sniff is inserted into the story, and references to Mr Fillyjonk, the stage manager and Emma’s late husband, are removed.
Snufkin and My’s subplot is changed and cut quite short, beginning with the element of the two not knowing each other. His assault on the park keeper seems to be done for the sake of rescuing the children more or less imprisoned in the park, but book Snufkin simply took joy in breaking the law. The episode lacks great scenes of him trying to take care of the 24 little children; doing things like making silly noises, threatening to drown himself, and exposing them to second hand smoke.
With a small handful of characters missing, the plot of the play Moominpappa writes greatly differs from the book. And say goodbye to the ending chapter, where the reunited Moomin family flees the police and gets chased all the way back to Moominvalley.
45 Moomin Builds a House: This episode is based on the comic of the same title. Although it cuts the story quite short, what is left in is relatively close to the original. Except for the insertion of Snufkin, but I am not offended because that adorable laugh made his appearance worthwhile.
59, 63, 68 Adventures of Moominpappa: And here we get to the episodes based on “The Exploits of Moominpappa”. The first few changes I’d like to point out are a little less notable. As Mrs Fillyjonk was already more established in the show, the Hemulen aunt becomes a Fillyjonk. Edward is a silent character, the Nibling child that Pappa and co look after is absent, and everyone gets real ugly colour palettes.
Next, as you may know, the original books don’t really follow a solid timeline and canon changes in between stories. So in an attempt to make more sense, the young Mymble that Moomin meets is Little My’s mother, rather than her sister. But strangely, Moominpappa’s other friends are no longer the parents of Sniff and Snufkin. Why those two were still so enraptured by listening to his story is unclear.
Comet in Moominland: Finishing off the list is a movie based on the story of the same name. Being the first in what is considered the “main” book series, there are bound to be differences in how characters are written. But there is no difference here more worth talking about than Snufkin.
As I’ve already mentioned before, he is portrayed in the anime as more relaxed. He is the older and most mature member of Moomin’s group of friends, and tends to be reserved in expressing his emotions. For the sake of presenting Snufkin as a responsible figure, he never teaches the gang his favourite game: rolling boulders down cliffs, an activity which almost results in multiple casualties. We never hear his story about disrespecting a police officer, and his subsequent prison break.
But Snufkin in the earlier books is very much a child like the rest of the main cast. He is playful and talkative, being described as bringing “gaiety” to their adventure, and is always thrilling his friends with epic tales from his travels. He is not shy about expressing himself, he is shown to have some sadness about having no parents and cries his wee heart out upon sees the dried up ocean.
Other changes may seem more innocuous by comparison, snipping a party scene and river raft ride, and including Little My. But with the lack of a noticeable personality for a key character, and some of the action scenes, much of the movie just feels like a boring hike home.
~
In short, yeah. As you can see I’m pretty passionate on this subject, especially when it comes to Snufkin’s characterisation. Anyone who wishes to discourse Moomins with me is welcome.

Tari’s Top Twenty OTPs - #12
OTP: Kili/Tauriel
Fandom: The Hobbit film trilogy
Kili: Kili is perhaps the youngest dwarf in the Company, brash and foolhardy and a little bit ignorant of the dangers of the world.  He and his brother Fili are heirs to Thorin and the throne of the lost Erebor, princes without a kingdom, and both have had to grow up a bit on their journey.  As the second-born, there is not as much pressure and weight on Kili’s shoulders as there is on Fili’s.  He’s allowed to be a little cheekier, a little more coddled and less responsible.  But he’s dreamed of seeing his people’s ancient homeland all his life, and desires to become the kind of man he perceives Thorin to be: noble, battle-hardened, a great proud warrior and hero.
Tauriel: At the young age of six hundred, Tauriel is already an accomplished warrior and holds the noble position of captain of the guard of the elven kingdom of Mirkwood, having been taken in by King Thranduil after her parents were murdered by orcs.  Tauriel has no love for any manner of foul creature and can be utterly ruthless in pursuing and taking vengeance upon the evils that are taking hold in the wood.  She has a strong sense of justice and moral duty, which sometimes puts her at odds with her king, whose isolationist polices frustrate Tauriel, and she is not afraid to criticize and question him.  Tauriel also has an inquisitive, gentler side.  She’s interested in and cares about things beyond the borders of Mirkwood, and is curious to learn about other peoples and cultures.  Above all, Tauriel is compelled to do what she feels is right, even if that means rebelling against her king.
Together: Though members of opposing races that typically mistrust, despise, and even outright hate each other, Kili and Tauriel are largely free of the typical prejudices that come between their peoples.  The racism of their forefathers is not yet ingrained into them and so they’re much more curious and intrigued by each other.  They can sit down and have polite conversations and swap stories about their travels and cultures and just generally find each other interesting.  Kili is the more besotted of the two, and a bit awkward about expressing it, also seeming to realize how impossible her returning his affections should be.  Tauriel is mostly confused, amused, and even possibly a little bit mildly flattered by his admiration, though it becomes clear later on that she’s also come to care quite strongly about the dwarf and his well-being, in some fashion.  They fall quickly, and hard.  Theirs is an innocent, fledgling sort of relationship, not quite fully considered and only in the beginning stages of its story.  It remains nothing but a sweet possibility in the end, as their relationship is cut short by the tragedies of war before they can fully realize what they mean to each other.
How I Got Into The Fandom: Being a movie-birthed fan of The Lord of the Rings I just sort of… inherited the Hobbit films as a fandom really.  I wasn’t chomping at the bit for the movies to happen but when they finally did you can bet I was right there flailing and fangirling and being super excited for them with the rest.
When I Started Shipping Them: Honestly I was kind of doomed to ship them from the start.  I’d heard the rumors about their little romantic plotline before the second film came out and, being that Kili sounded like he was going to be an absolutely precious dork about her and that I completely adore that kind of thing, I supported the ship’s existence almost by default.  Collected little bits of fanart here and there.  Nothing big.  And then I went and got to see Desolation of Smaug.  And Kili was absolutely precious about her, just staring at her in awe from the moment he laid eyes on her.  And as the movie progressed and Kili and Tauriel interacted they hit more and more of my favorite shippy tropes.  I was majorly into them even before the halfway mark and by the end of the film, with their last scene… well, suffice to say they pretty much had me completely.  The next evening was spent gleefully diving into the fandom with vigorous abandon.
Why I Love Them: I am super into guys being super into their lady loves and just completely adoring them and admiring them and thinking they’re awesome and not being emasculated by their badassery.  Kili and Tauriel have this adorable kind of Gender Role Reversal to their relationship: Tauriel is the stoic badass that swoops in to the rescue and Kili is the damsel in distress who just has stars in his eyes every time he sees her.  (The height difference helps cement that.)  Add in a healthy dose of culture clash, angst from the fact that they are Star Crossed Lovers from feuding races, and the tragic separation and end to their budding romance, and you have one super-heartwarming narratively doomed ship that will just completely break your heart.  Hurts so good though.
Three Favorite Moments:
1. “She walks in starlight in another world...”
Ngh, I could watch this scene forever.  The lead-up to this moment is awesome too, with Tauriel choosing to stay behind and heal Kili’s poisoned wound and Kili literally seeing Tauriel in sparklevision.  (Well, okay, not quite literally, there is a canon explanation that elves’ true forms are very shiny and full of light and those on the edge of death can see it.)
Once things have calmed and Kili is out of danger, he lays on the table semi-delirious and then, unexpectedly, calls Tauriel’s name.
Surprised, Tauriel just smiles and tells him to rest.  Kili, still not quite conscious, assumes he must be having a dream, and whispers reverently about how the real Tauriel is far, far away from him, walking in starlight.  He reaches for her hand, brushing her fingers with his, and wonders aloud if she could have ever loved him.
Tauriel’s expression pinches with emotion before we cut away.
2. “If this is love, I do not want it.”
After the Battle of the Five Armies is over, Thranduil comes upon Tauriel, kneeling by the dead Kili’s side and mourning him.
“They want to bury him,” she says miserably.
The contempt Thranduil held for Tauriel’s feelings is gone, and he can only feel pity for her now.  Pity as she begs him to take this emotion from her, cries out that she doesn’t understand why it hurts so much.
“Because it was real,” he tells her gently.
Numb, Tauriel lets her tears fall, leans down and kisses Kili goodbye, sliding the runestone he gave her back into his hands and weeping softly.
3. Saving him at the river
Kili, impulsive action-taker that he is, has taken an arrow to his thigh in his reckless attempt to open the sluice gate and allow the company to escape.
He collapses, and the orcs begin to descend on him.  But all of a sudden an arrow flies in from offscreen, killing the nearest attacker.
Kili’s head whips around and he stares in awe and wonder as Tauriel charges in, accompanied by a dramatic swell of her theme.  A worried expression on her face, she engages the orcs, slicing through them, only once distracted by Kili’s cry of pain.

For the tv show ask 1-7, 9 & 10
(Glad to see you considered question 8 as boring as I do xD)
if you could reboot one TV show, which one would it be?
This is a hard questions because honestly, I don’t think in reboots xD. If I loved a show, a ~reimagining of it doesn’t come to my mind? Even if I won’t mind it if it happened (this is my reminder for checking out the Charmed reboot once and for all, it’s one of the very few I’ve been enthusiastic about).
Hmm. Maybe some type of Lois & Clark reboot? In the sense that I’ve wanted a clois show that reimagined the source material for a while. I would want it with Lois’ POV as the lead tho; Lois would still be older and more established than Clark, and I’ve always liked the idea of her as a war correspondent (or at least former war correspondent). It could be interesting to use a visual medium instead of newspapers, too. Lucy Liu has been one of my fancasts for a while, NGL, reinforced by that Set It Up movie. She looks a lot like the STAS version. I’ve also seen Morley and Lindsay fancasted as Clois over twitter and it’s GOOD, but tbh I want Lois to be older than him.
if you could have saved one TV show from cancellation, which one would it be?
A few months ago, I would’ve said El Ministerio del Tiempo (The ministry of time, aka the show timeless ripped-off lol), but it’s just been renewed for a fourth season after over a year without a word and I’m over the moon (they announced it the day of Los Santos Inocentes, aka Spain’s equivalent to April’s Fools, and I was suspicious about it for over a week lmao).
So with that out of the way, the question would be between Sarah Connor Chronicles and Galavant, tbh. Probably SCC, because that cliff-hanger still haunts me to this day.
have you ever quit a show before it finished? why?
I quit shows ALL THE FREAKING TIME. Usually, it’s simply because they don’t grab my hyper-fixation, and if I’m not 200% into it, what’s the point, really (sometimes, if I *do* really like some parts of the story, I go back when the season is finished and binge-watch, but mostly I just quit). Other times it’s because I can tell that my priorities are too different from the writers and I pre-emptively pull away. But mostly is due to lack of enthusiasm for the story. I don’t think I’ve ever rage-quitted anything.
are there any shows you wish could just be cancelled already?
Not really. I mean, most of my current shows are brand new xD (Legacies, Roswell, The Umbrella Academy, Elite, Sex Education, Black Monday -where I’m not caught up because I Fear the ending and I want to see how it all pans down-; I just started Deadly Class and I’m loving it), and the others are The 100, Star vs the Forces of Evil, Veep, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (tho if last season had been its end I’d be fine with it, it was gr10 for me and my priorities lol) and Suits, where, tbh, if the writers maintained the level of engagement I’ve felt in the last season, I would be fine with them running more years. And the rest of the shows I’m entertaining to watch are already finished or cancelled, so.
(I heard about SPN’s cancellation and I’m actually a little sad about it lol. Not for the show itself -I’ve only watched Bela’s, Ruby’s and Anna’s episodes and that’s how it’s forever gonna stay; I knew I would never be able to get into the show because Dean is pretty much my anti-type of lead character lol. But I found its endurability hilarious and it’s cancellation sounds fake xDD).
what’s your comfort show?
RN, Star vs the Forces of Evil. I wish more people in my dash watched it because it’s the cutest thing ever, and it has legitimately gr10 storylines. I need to watch the latests eps.
Other comfort shows: Galavant, Gravity Falls, Lois & Clark… almost any of my favourite animated shows, tbh.
which shows do you think are underrated and need more love?
Of my current shows, Black Monday. I haven’t seen anyone on my dash mention it, and it had me hooked from the first episode and the next just reinforced it (I haven’t watched past that because, as I said, there’s some foreshadowing that makes me fear the ending, as I am already way too invested… there’s only two episodes left, so I’ll be binge-watching it soon tho).
have you ever been inspired to start a new show based on gifs or memes it has produced?
That’s exactly why I started Deadly Class yesterday and I’m already half-way through lol (it’s only ten eps long). I saw it around tumblr and I took notice, thinking I might try it out at some point, though I didn’t know what it was about. Then I saw this gifset (it’s from the pilot, so not too spoilery), and I needed to know what the fuck was going on LMAO. Fair warning, though not too graphic (except kind of in the flashbacks, which are drawn in comic style and have the worst content), it has frankly upsetting/potentially triggering content. But I’m really enjoying the ~vibe and its characters. The protagonist (my fave) kind of reminds me of Scott McCall? Not so much in personality (… there he kind of reminds me of Jason Todd lol, with caveats), but in the “his milkshake brings all the boys (and girls, and nb folk) to the yard” factor xDD
what’s one show you thought you’d hate but turned out to really enjoy?
I tend to be right about my predictions in this regard lol. Usually, at most I’ll start watching something ~casually/with other people, and later it grabs me when I start shipping/stanning some characters HARD (see: MCU, Shadowhunters).
Oh, I recently started watching Legends of Tomorrow with a friend (except we’re going backwards because she’s in s4 and I didn’t feel the need to catch up first lol); giving my meh reaction to the rest of the CW DC verse (The Flash is the only one I tolerate & can casually watch some arcs once in a while, and it’s because Westallen it’s what it is, basically. I’m kind of curious about the daughter-from-the-future plotline and I might watch last season when it’s over. In general, there’s something about the ~pathos of the ‘verse that rubs me the wrong way), and I’m liking it A LOT more than I expected? Most of the characters really ~*spark* and I’m loving it (notable exceptions: Ava, Mick, and Grant? Gary? IDK, that dude).
what’s one show you thought you’d love but turned out to really hate?
Hmm… kind of same-as-above. This is probably partially because of my tendency to drop shows at the first sign of anything unappealing, because it doesn’t let my feelings grow into hate lol.

@codes i think i may have put this on my artblog but... Here
i guess ill start w ichi bc i always forget about him somehow like i always come up short when im making lists and im like 'oh wait shit yeah that guy’ bc im stupid n i only think of fishing trio + choro. I’m an Idiot. idk i never thought too hard on ichi bc i so rarely think about him but he looks so high its really funny i said this on main but he looks like my friend when he decided to try a weed gummy bear then started babbling about hentai then watched to watch porn with me but got mad all the intro scenes are a billion years long and started ranting about the industry but now that i think about it he looks like someone who used to send me weird shit when he was high like bad pick up lines about body parts i wish i didnt have
and thats so funny that its Ichimatsu who looks like that but also proof that hes high. but anyway!! hes really cute and im mad hes boutta ruin my reputation for my complete and utter lack of care and interest in him no matter what im mad. my friend gwyn said 'Sp lubing us up for the fuckening that is the reason why Ichi is sad in present day’ im really curious at the change like if hes trying a fake it till you make it type thing bc really emotionally exhausted or if hes just genuinely having a good time or hes puttin on a front since like. nails who stand get hammered down right??? just gotta do your best n Never Relax n i can relate to all that. but uhhh old hcs i guess
in kun ichi was the most serious! really smart but just as bad w school as the rest of them apparently but!! yeah so id think that!! ichis that guy who participates in class discussion constantly and is always willing to debate the readings, but turns in sloppy papers with typos and no a coherency or stucture or anything. he’s A+ in participation but has an average of 60% on most of the written assignments with points knocked bc of lateness then more bc its A Mess. you could ask about the prompts for one of his papers, he could babble about his position on it complete with paragraphs and footnotes but like the day before its due hes playing rpgs and watching horror movies.
his classmates think hes so smart n so intimidating. the family knows hes a hot mess. the teachers tell him he has a lot of potential but they don’t think hes applying himself. all are right. also he doesnt cheat or let people cheat off of him since hes always been about rules and boundaries and Rightness n he n jyushi were the only ones who Minded Themselves in kun
uhh jyushi!! let me talk about schoolwork again bc yeah i love jyushi so so so so much and thinking of him in a school environment is so weird i thought about it a lot n i thought about it him in kun n san and Woah!! i really really love delinquent jyushi, bc when i saw that i was like 'huh! that fits actually!!’ i love that like him and choro flip flopped completely from what i thought. his school must be so cold theyre too cheap to afford heating in the winter and in summer the acs Blast. he was so Shy and quiet and he cried and he liked to sing so i always thought that when he participated in chorus festivals hes always like right in front!! he hums a lot in class and also moves around alot bc he actually like school and people like primary trio are the types that make friends often. i wasnt supposed to talk about this yet whoops.
unlike ichi who relatively neat despite everything but has shit notes, jyushis notes are amazing and understandable and utterly illegible.
theyre covered in doodles, arrows and lines leading every which way, different colors but not like color coded n theyre not in order by date, but he opens to a random page every time yet somehow always seems to know where to find each lesson. he writes footnotes and caveats and corrections and criticisms of the teachers and random thoughts and just smears ink everywhere. sometimes his notes are on a completely different subject. the notebook itself is a horrifying mess, the front and back covers both covered in drawings and designs and falling apart, random papers shoved between the pages, coming apart at the seams, covered in stains of unknown origin. assignments are full of emoticons and informal language, and they always manage to make his teachers feel like hes smarter than they are (most likely). he does his projects the minute theyre assigned, and is finished a minute later so can talk to his friends. he loved school.
sophie told me once about how she thought was Like That was bc one of his main concerns is that he thought he had nothing that made him Jyushi n in kun she said he might have been the one who was the most concerned about having a distinctive personality and i talked about how that sorta carried over san and how he always blended in bc of how gentle and soft and push-overy he was. he was actually the and most gullible and weakest in kun so i was like :0 when i saw that and intentionally did stuff like only carry 14 yen in his pockets to be quirky but it always sorta fell flat and he was still invisible so i was like hmmmmm. and i can see how he couldve toughened up and thinking of this now!! i love that. oh im so happy. this is so much better than i ever couldve imagined ever.
totty…. i do not think he was very popular or good at school. i think he’s very decent at schoolwork but he never put much effort into it. just copies whats on the board but if the class runs out of allotted lesson time n he couldnt finish his work he just didnt do it like cram schools a pain in the ass. if he put effort hed be a star student but he just craps out whatever since hes was the laziest!! oh but something i noticed was that him and jyushi would play together often since sometime he felt overwhelmed by karamatsu a lot. also hes the money thief and scammer its great kun todo is so good. he gets shy and flustered easy too!!
but uhh yeah!! depending on the day im always like 'zaimoku love each other so much they are best friends and the perfect other halves!!’ then im like 'these mofos hate each other what the fuck is this trainwreck’ did you see their shitty small talk in the horse episode. what was that. like they are genuinely trying to communicate and are pretty easy with each other but they have nothing to say. its like when youre having a boring day at school and theres nothing to talk about with an acquaintance so you just look at the walls and go 'have you ever noticed how stupid these posters are’ then you both start reading posters aloud but you both know its not that funny and youre just doing it to waste time but you still enjoy their company you just dont want silence. thats their relationship. and i think they are just very similar in very different ways and like. the key things that make them both similar and different and the same fuck them up (like suiriku!! theyre both really similar even if it doesn’t seem like it at first which is why their compatibility in the relationship chart was so low in s1, but i saw a lot of improvement in both of their behaviours and their communication and honestly. s2 was worth it for that sophie was so happy to see her faves get along) like sometimes when you look in the mirror all the things you see are the things you dont like about yourself instead of what makes you wonderful and unique. also i didnt mean to talk about this but i guess i am.
but yeah. totty is bitter n resentful at kara during hs n karas more confused and upset at tottys behaviour in their twenties n thats bc like i said. theyre dumb. karamatsu!! i think was actually pretty popular in highschool n had a good amount of friends - i genuinely think theatre kids are well liked bc i literally know everyone in my department and im friends w a good amount of people and im not even That extroverted. my actual extrovert friends know everyone in the school by name and everyone in my department is so nice even though theres a lot of bitchiness and drama its not as bad as w other humanities studies (jesus christ humanity students outside of theatre are a hot mess.)
uh yeah n that ultimately makes totty feel a bit… betrayed? karamatsu is his partner! theyre supposed to be there for eachother! kara’s the first one to branch out, get friends etc etc and todomatsus left behind bc hes always the one playimg follow the leader and he breaks out of that once they graduate - he grows up resenting karamatsu slightly though he still cares. but this time Hes the one cancelling plans to hang out with friends instead. my friend katie put it best when, in response to me telling them this, they sent me:
'kara: totty you have so many friends now. We barely see you anymore.
totty, applying chapstick: well, I learned it from the best.’
when i told them about it. but at the time gwyn and i were babbling about possibilities and different storylines and how theres a possiblity the movie might break down into three manageable plotlines n she gave zaimoku 'popularity’ and this was me throwing out ideas but honestly. Good. (aha, the end of this scenario ended up with todo throwing hands and shoulder checking someone outside a window and then getting removed from the premise n hanging with atsushi all night after) why am i on this. shit what happened here.
uhh but yeah totty is Def someone with learned behaviours rather than being a natural extrovert honestly just look at him hes an introverted mess masquerading as a decent human being and i know full well how people like that are bc some of them have been my best friends for years n seein the new hs promos solidifies that fact bc look at him. Crybaby. He is Miniscule. A Child.
then its 'delinquent who looks like an honour student’ choro. i never studied him until sophie started liking choro n since i love sophie i wanted to take an interest in him too. n i started to think very hard about him! then gwyn planted this in me n its taken root and im just never not gonna think its great. yall see his shitty gokudo impression what a bossy lil shit. he pulled a whip on kara once and it was mad funny but also Gwyns Big Evidence for him just being the absolute worst not like a casually skips class type but a Choro was a legit a bully and really mean n sabatoged other classmates to make him look like he was 100% That Bitch. maybe not him being Mean and cruel but just an asshole who bums around, is something i really like that one a lot its been one of my faves since gwyn n i started talking about it but i just!! have a ton of other things too!!
hes a lot like karamatsu in that theyre both stupid and weird and embarrassing and they put on airs but they also!! dont try!! they talk so big and such high goals n expectations and they dont do shit bc they have so much hubris but i always talk about them bc suiriku is sophies Beloved so ill like. Not. but he acts like he’s better than all of them n forces the role of the straight man on himself because he wants to be seen as the responible, level headed one even if hes just. So Much.
i think the movies calling back to how touchy feely and clingy he was in kun and adding on to how jyushis a delinquent and kara… Is Like That he’ll be around them the most bc jyushi might either be really protective or push him away and then they do something to mend their relationship later on or hell cling to kara and they just. grow apart. sticking to my hc until the end bitches. oh.
for choro… personally!! i thought hed be a slacker instead of a delinquent but not in the way totty slacked - totty was lazy n knew the work but didnt want to put in effort but choro just. Doesnt. choro has so much energy all the time and choro Can Not deal with school situations. bc like… you always hear people say that studying is meant to be done at the desk, silently, no distractions what so ever!! focus on notes and nothing else!! ise a highlighter but dont use it too much!! make your notes legible but you only have five minutes before the board gets erased!! review!!! look at your notes or youll die! take breaks bit dont take too long and honestly. listen. kun choro wouldnt be able to stand that shit and id think hed just think he was doing it The Wrong Way n he just wasnt meant to do it.
he doesnt like quiet classrooms!! he cant study like that and hell get distracted. he cant sit still n thats why totoko broke up w him in the beer ad and why hes just Everywhere in kun!! hes understimulated and its just Ugh! you know??? he’ll fidget w his pens until he breaks them or hum or tap his foot and annoy everyone or leave for the bathroom at least three times a class just to get up and move.
eventually he just. gives up even though hes super smart he like, stops caring bc if you dont care to understand material then you wont have to read and read and reread and rereread something to get it! classes just make everything uncomphrehensible and makes any idea he may have sublimate into nothing. but he can work on the trains and the buses! he needs something kenetic to get him moving and trains n shit always have enough going on to work with, just like with home!! chorochoro motherfuckers. he works much better moving forward, ironic as that is. he feels sorta set apart from every thing like hes behind some big plane of glass doing everything wrong and being all set apart from everything. eventually he takes to acting like a real fussy mom to avoid his own problems and help everyone else out even though hes annoying and even when he graduates but it gets Worse bc then figures out how much!!! he fucked up!! then he kicks himself into high gear n still cant do shit. ahh.
its illegal for me to talk about choukei bc i talk about them so much and im always being annoying n typing stupid essays about them bc theyre… my faves.. But this is so long…
it actually makes me super happy that he kara acne he still can be really fighty and he cries and he still does stupid impulsive shit for others and even though hes really sweet and caring is still an utter monster and fucking mess of a person. love him. i always like to think his shittymatsu nickname came from iyami n it just morphed from there bc in 66 you can hear iyami calling him specifically garbage. ive always been glad they kept his sewing hobby too. ahh, actually from what i see hes pretty similarities to kun so i wonder when he decided to air out that teremity. idk what to say about him that i havent in tottys section. he just Feels like someone who had a good support group and nice friends bc of how hes able to move in the world. kara feels like some whos doing their growing up in their twenties bc highschool came easy to them and now theyre just really struggling with the real world. like i shouldve expected softboy hs kara and i appreciate him very much!! i talk about choukei a lot bc they were the first characters that spoke so i immediately attached myself to them n i talk about karamatsu Specifically but im not sure i ever mentioned how much i appreciated how smart and cautious hes proved himself to be time and time again, like how hes the only one to point out totokos fish shtick aint doing her favours or how he was the first one to notice osos irritation n how you can pick out his voice warning jyushi to calm down in the bg of 24 or how in the comedian episode he was ready to take Notes from iyami and a lot of other small things!!
i would think hes actually a bit more serious n calm in hs and san is him amping up traits that drew people to him in hs and it backfiring on kara spectacularly - kara is always gauging people and their reactions and acting in a way he believes will get something positive, but at the same time is utterly oblivious when it comes to actually Getting them n i talked about the girls on the bridge but this is also prevalent with ichi who kara just. Doesnt Get and can not figure out how to maneuver their relationship. like oso, kara is and elder brother!! and elder brothers have an image theyre supposed to uphold, but while kara acts the part he doesnt do the shit a big brother does and shrugs that responsibility off on oso until oso fucks up until s2, where they share the role more evenly and his relationship with ichi improves but this is another essay entirely. what im trying to get with that is that hyperfocus on what other people think of him, but his complete disregard when it comes to their actual reaction and instead what he wants their reactions to be would also greatly impact him transtioning from a teen to an adult im sorry im getting sloppy now
osomatsu… i really adore him too much and i understand how totty felt in their episode bc i also lent my phone to a friend who needed to desperately jack it before meeting new people n i talk about him a whole lot too. hes mean and an asshole and garbage n i know a lot of people find him plain n boring but idk. i dont think thats the case hes a really complexed n nuanced character n hes literally has always been way back from kun n thats expected from a main character but… hes always been mean n dumb n sly and he can get so pathetically vunerable and thats literally!! him. hes a normal dude nothing wrong with that n it can be real refreshing. n i suppose im so fond of fishing trio+choro bc they remind me of my friends. but yeah even if hes 'plain’ i dont see why thats a bad thing. n this they always have the most interesting body language like despite kara being So Much his body language was always closed off n singled him out as everything But exuberant and bright, and osos quirks like how he stands on his toes a lot had always been so cute… its relaxed and open n screams Talk To Me!!!!
ahh but i always end up thinking oso was. oso??? theres not much to say that i havent before but i do think that he was a lot more like he was in episode 2 when ranting to chibita about having shitty brothers and then actively Chose to be a good brother even if he wasnt a good person and be a stable rock and be someone they could all come back to at the end of the day. and hes good at math im never letting this die.

What is it about Hannibal (the show + person) and his relationship with will that you absolutely love about? They do seem like an interesting couple (I haven’t seen the movie so I cannot relate much) but what about them? I genuinely curious and am interested with your thoughts and opinions.
Hi Anon!! This is a really big question, but I’ll do my best to answer it. I’m definitely gonna put most of this under a cut, because it got really, really long.
First of all, the relationship that I love in regards to the Will//Hannibal dynamic comes from the TV show Hannibal, which was written by Bryan Fuller and ran on NBC from 2013-2015. It was an extraordinarily unique and in-depth take on the Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham friendship that was based on the books, insofar that Will Graham was one of the few who deeply understood Hannibal Lecter prior to the revelation that he was a cannibal. Of course, Bryan took that concept several steps further.
My first suggestion? If you can stomach any kind of horror or gore, watch Hannibal. It is without a doubt the best television show I’ve ever seen, if only because it is visually beautiful, every character is complex and has clearly outlined motivations of their own, and is a really deeply intellectual piece of media. It’s not an easy watch, and I don’t mean that because of content. The story itself, the character drives, even the dialogue will challenge you. It’s not something you just sit down and understand, it really did take a lot of work for me to grasp the full spectrum of what was going on at any given time during my first watch. I’d never encountered something that pushed me that hard before, and even with a week between episodes or more (since I watched when it was originally airing), I was often left like ?????. Think of it like Black Mirror, except every episode is tied together. It’s gonna screw with you a little, so you’ll want to be prepared.
The thing other than the fantastic writing that brings this show and these characters to life: the actors. Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter presents a character that you better not take your eyes off even once. Hannibal says things so smoothly and with such conviction, but it’s only if you watch his face at all times that you will see the micro-expressions of what he is actually thinking and feeling. There’s a reason he’s often referred to as the Devil, as smoke.
Hugh Dancy as Will Graham presents a man who is haunted by his own desires from empathizing too closely with killers. He can feel what murderers feel, and that gives him a unique perspective. He puts himself inside their minds to recreate their thought processes as they kill, and that gets to him. It haunts him, and sticks with him. It puts him in the position of needing someone to help him find his way back to himself when he gets in too deep.
It’s such a unique dynamic. I really couldn’t tear myself away. And that’s only where their story begins.
It starts as a sense of curiosity. Hannibal by nature and necessity is a solitary creature, and he has been pretty damn happy that way. When Jack Crawford asks him to profile Will Graham and clear him for field work, it is a unique opportunity for him as an already-established killer to see inside the workings of the FBI. That’s advantageous for him, of course. He can then keep tabs on the investigation against him. But in the process, he discovers Will, who thinks like a killer. Will, who has forcibly shoved his own personality into a very safe box of isolation and rescued dogs and fly fishing, things that require control and perfection. Will uses these constructs as shields to keep the darkness inside him at bay. He absorbs killers to gain their insights, but once they are inside, he has a really hard time getting rid of them.
It may seem backwards, but despite Hannibal meeting other killers who are very much like him, he ultimately rejects them because he doesn’t want someone exactly like himself. He wants Will because he is so incredibly human, but trying so hard to restrain his own darkness. What Hannibal wants above all is to set him free, come hell or high water. And fundamental transformations can be exquisitely painful, even in their beauty. Hannibal wants to see what will happen.
The Hannibal/Will relationship doesn’t stay stagnant, ever. There is a constantly shifting dynamic of power once we reach S2 and Will is aware of Hannibal’s nature. Will puts himself in a position to learn more about Hannibal, and in doing so, finds himself feeling the pull that Hannibal described, discovering the ways in which they are so alike. And the tension in these scenes is indescribable. If you’ve seen any of the gifsets I’ve reblogged, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Every molecule of space between them is charged with intent. Every word is carefully weighted. Every glance is measured to not be too soon or too late, hoping to glimpse beneath the other’s veneer of civility and see the creature inside. They are so cruel to each other as they learn one another, but in their cruelty, they push each other to higher heights, and the friendship never quite fractures.
In a word, they get close. There are moments standing in firelight and shadow, genuine smiles shared, tension that builds and grows until every inch of darkness between them is thick with it. Flirtatious glances. Familiar, intimate touches that hold such rich subtext. They understand each other like no one else does. They stand on the very edge of becoming something more, becoming family, when everything collapses, and they are both devastated by it.
Their relationship is the very definition of “can’t live with him, can’t live without him”. They are described by others as being “identically different”, as being “nakama [friends, but more like… family. like a group of people tied together by life and circumstance who would not easily be broken apart]”.
Hannibal’s revelation of love for Will Graham comes in their separation. It hits him like a train, to be honest. It’s the first time the viewer realizes that underneath the very polite and elegant and put-together man that covers the vicious killer, he really does crave companionship. Even in his solitary life, Hannibal has never been actually solitary. He fills the gaps in with friends and acquaintances, people he cares for to an extent, but mostly people he uses for their advantageous nature. Will is the first person who really sees Hannibal down to his bones, and the loss of him, and the loss of their mutual potential, deeply wounds him.
Like. I can’t even fully explain all the things about these characters that get to me. I think the thing I like most is that, even as a serial killer, Hannibal is still so very human. He finds pleasure in art and architecture. He enjoys history and philosophy and educational pursuits. He’s a talented artist and musician and chef. He gets annoyed by rude people the same as the rest of us. The main difference is that he eats them.
This show is visceral. It’s a game of cat and mouse, a chessboard of intellectual bad decisions, but every choice is born from emotional need. And the best thing about it is that Bryan Fuller fully accepts, welcomes, and acknowledges the love between Hannibal and Will canonically in the show. Not just “haha that’s gay” jokes. Everyone else can see it. Everyone has some sort of parting shot about it. But in the end, even Will is faced with the point-blank realization that, yes, Hannibal is in love with him, and has the question turned back on him: but do you ache for him?
By the end, there is no doubt that the call has been heard, and the draw between them culminates in what Hannibal has really desired all along: he and Will hunting together, fighting together. Achilles and Patroclus, as they have been described by Hannibal himself.
This show is a masterpiece, honestly. It unfolds the confines of civility and sees predators set free. It sees them together, reunited. It sees them in love. It sees them from beginning to end, where even the end is not really the end.
I dearly, desperately hope for a season four of this show. I’m comforted by the fact that all the writers, producers, and actors have voiced their support of doing so, if they can find a production company to pick them up and get the rights of the other Hannibal characters [re: SotL] the way Bryan desires.
The fandom is incredible. Everyone is a little bit older than my prior fandoms, and people tend to be well-seasoned to the concept of reading what they enjoy and silently passing over things that are not to their tastes. There’s… not really any fighting the way there is in other fandoms. Those who disagree have civilized discussions, because the first and foremost rule of the fandom is the first and foremost rule of understanding Hannibal Lecter: “Whenever possible, one should always try to eat the rude.”
And the fandom is alive!! It’s actively creating new art and new gifsets and new fics and new everything every day, and not on a small scale, either. There are thousands of people still out here eagerly awaiting the revival of a truly groundbreaking show that showcased LGBT relationships (not just Hannibal and Will, mind you. Margot/Alana is real and alive and nourishes my soul to this day), a diverse cast, riveting and powerful female characters, and the kind of plotline and visual storytelling that the ancients would weep if they could see.
TLDR:  I love this fandom. I love these characters. I love these monsters, and I see myself inside them in ways that is absolutely concerning to polite society. I love the imagery, the depth of morality. I love that it’s feasible for me to write a fic in which the characters can love each other and are constantly working around one another to achieve their own ends, and that every fic I read by everyone else has a different insight to their relationship. That every fic I read is a fucking masterpiece, seriously, oh my god, the quality of fiction in this fandom is so high, it’s amazing.
Join us, Anon. The Atlantic is a little chilly this time of year, but you’ll get used to it, I promise.

It starts off with a flashback, a time skip, and a book reference.
I know this movie will destroy me.
TL;DR: Everything I expected to be presented showed up. My opinions have not, or barely, changed.
Let's get some fangirl moments out of the way:
I am not ready.
I will definitely cry.
There were dragons when I was a boy...
HICCUP BEARD.
Hiccstrid cute!
SO MUCH NEW STUFF.
What a gorgeous world! I can't wait for the art book so I can explore this on my own.
This world! So bright! So new! So colourful! So fresh for destroying and leaving forever! 🙃
War! Pain! Death! Right up my alley!
I am so ready to cry.
Furies
Night Fury - Oh my god you’re embarrassing don’t look at me I love you. You really are your best friend’s dragon. I am seduced.
Light Fury - she’s based off a cat! Even more so than Toothless. Cool and curious, not seductive at all. She seems like a real animal dragon, and not a girly-caricature which I appreciate a lot. Loving the different tail and teleportation (?) powers. Still plain and cute though. Round and nub-less and unfinished (compared to all the other dragons). I didn’t see anything underwater (other than the sea, but it seemed to mostly an entrance), so I am still lost on why she’s so smooth and round. What is the purpose? Maybe it’s because she teleports? She’s young? I hope the movie expands on this. For now, I am still wary.
On that note, I’d say the movie is 80% about friendship and “end of the world”, and 20% Light Fury romance, which is a good thing imo. There will probably one or two scenes with “suave” Toothless, but the rest of the time the Light Fury shows up seems to be with the Night Fury hunter.
Whose name still escapes me. He is so bland. I am sure he has his merits and will be further detailed in the movie, but where is Drago? He was so perfectly set up to return from Movie 2, and we don’t need an introduction because we already know him. He could be so much more! I want Drago!
Things I want to see in the movie and/or future trailers
Drago
ERET SON OF ERET
Valka!!!
The Gang
Light Fury - I want to get to know her more! I want a getting to know you scene! Just like we did with Toothless from Movie 1!
Parallels. Movie parallels. Book parallels. Parallels!
Heaviness and heartache! I want to cry!
Smooth plot development and flow. War plotlines are always tricky to handle. They did a decent job in Movie 2, I hope that carries over in Movie 3.
Worlds! Let me discover this hidden world!
Music! Music! MUUUUSIC!!!!!! John Powell do not fail me!!!
I want this to be the best damn movie I’ve ever seen! I want it rip my heart out and tear me to pieces! I love Dragons!
In conclusion, I am less but still wary, less but still worried, and even more fucking excited than ever. Is it 2019 yet?

Violet Evergarden- the finale. A rant.
You know what Kyoani is good at? Crushing your hopes.
It’s been like that with Free. Been like that with Kyoukai no Kanata. I am not saying Kyoani is not a good studio, their work usually transforms into masterpieces, but with adapting Violet Evergarden, they have made a mistake.
I have read the translation of the novels shortly after the first episode aired, because I was very curious and could not wait to know what would happen or how it possibly could end. Before episode 3 aired, I had finished reading it all and I was fairly pleased and satisfied with the written works. I loved them, I loved the characters, explanations, plotline and most importantly, I loved the ending.
Admittedly, at first I enjoyed watching the anime adaption as well. I told myself that nobody ever exactly sticks to the novels/books when making a movie/series/anime etc. Things would be changed, new things would be added. That is pretty normal and I decided that I could live with that very well.
I was OK with the fact they left out characters and brought in own ones with unique storylines.
I was OK with the fact that they changed hair colours or generally some appearances of a few characters.
I  tried to be OK with the fact that personality traits were changed too.
I was OK with the fact that Violet learned pretty fast, almost too fast and ended up being weak most of the time. (No offense but wth Kyoani..)
I was OK with the fact they left out some (important) details such as Hodgins being bisexual, more of Cattleya x Benedict’s conflicts and feelings (Even though, I gotta say I ship Hodgins x Cattleya a whole lot more, already did in the novels as well xD sue me).
I was OK with the fact that they made me like Dietfried more than I should and that they changed his character as well, making him more relevant for Violet too.
I even accepted the fact that they replaced Gilbert with Dietfried in episode 12 at the train incident scene. I honestly was able to swallow the cringe down and told myself that there had to be something big and better to come, that would make up for all the past mistakes that I had to be so very salty about B U T. Guess what?
It never came. And it only got worse.
Now, I am not going to judge the whole last episode, I liked some aspects about it, I might have even gotten a little emotional at some point, but this ending was a mess. It was far off good and far off being close to tolerable for me. We do not know where Gilbert is now. Is he alive? Is he dead? Did Violet see him at the end? I love Gilbert wholeheartedly but his potential was truly wasted and Kyoani would have made him seem as if he was an asshole if he ever decided to show up. Or maybe they just killed him off, I believe that would be truly for the best in the end...
You know, I guess I could have forgiven them if they showed him to us. If they showed us that he was alive and well, let us see his face so that our hopes were not completely crushed – because eventually, I had hopes for him to return till the very last second of the finale. I would not have needed an explanation. Just his face.
But no. We got an open ending that leaves us with many ways of seeing this and I am honestly not okay with it. I hate it. I truly do. I hate this ending. And I have never been more disappointed by an animation than this one right now. It should not bother me so much, but I loved and felt this story (novel) a whole lot and I cannot get over the fact that Kyoani wasted it all so much. Especially at the ending.
Now I know there will be a new project? I wonder what it could be. Sequel maybe? A movie? Whatever they come up with, I do not want to build up any hopes and get them crushed yet again, but for the anime’s reputation it would be better if they brought in Gilbert or at least cleared the situation if he is truly dead or not. Teasing and never actually explaining anything won’t make the “fans” love it more. It will only disappoint them.
The last thing I want to add is that if you have not read the story, that is fine. If you enjoyed the anime to the very last episode, if you loved the ending, that is fine too! That is your opinion and your opinion matters as well. Do not hate on someone that loved the anime or someone that hated it. Everyone is free to state their mind and thoughts and so am I.
Maybe someone agrees on this with me, or maybe nobody does, but I honestly could not give this a rest before I hadn’t written down what’s on my mind.

Loved it.  Loved it.  Loved it.
Yeah, so.  When we were in Moscow in October, I at last got to see my first “French” musical, and it wasn’t even in French.  :3  I’ve had this thing on my radar for a while, and I was giddy excited when it turned out that it would be playing while we were in Russia after all.  It was everything I hoped for and more.
I think we all kinda know what I mean when I say “French musical”.....I mean a nice, big, gooey helping of campy joy served up hot, complete with lots of belting, anachronistic pleather costumes, and gratuitous interpretive dancing in the background of every scene.  Like Broadway as filtered through a Backstreet Boys concert.  And by that definition, Anna Karenina: The Musical is probably the most French thing the Russians have made in a while.
And it was awesome.
First off, I should note that this musical, like the 2012 movie, was not really intended for those not already familiar with the story going into it.  It was so impressionistic at parts and skipped so many of the plot points that the uninitiated could be forgiven for not giving a shit about what’s going on with these characters.  If you’ve read the book first, though (as pretty much all Russians have, I imagine), you’d be able to follow just fine, though some of the plot abridgments might piss you off.  Didn’t piss me off, though, because not only am I not much of a purist about this book, but I was just enjoying the craziness of this thing so much that I couldn’t spare a moment to be snobbishly outraged.  I mean, I’m watching Levin groan out an angsty baritone solo about getting rejected and swallowing sadness, accompanied by a liberal dose of whiny electric guitar in the background.  How am I not going to go along with this...?
I should add that it helps that Russian musical theatre performers are incredibly talented...more than most French ones, IMO.  (Just my preference for “Broadway” type voices over poppy “Nouvelle Star” type voices in musical theatre...)  I was especially impressed by the actors playing Vronsky and Kitty in this, not to mention Anna herself...and the role of Anna in this is like the Elphaba of Russian musicals, a beast requiring a killer high belt in addition to a solid high and low range.  I live near NYC and see several Broadway shows a year, and I’d say any performer in this show could fit right into a Broadway-caliber production.  Even the distinguished gentleman playing Karenin just went ahead and belted his face off...!  It goes without saying that the Russians have all the classically-influenced areas covered, too: so the dancers have ballet training and are amazing, and did I mention there’s even an aria for an opera diva?  That’s probably what I thought set this apart the most from the French musicals--this is clearly influenced by that style of musical, but it sounds distinctly Russian in musical stylings throughout.  Not like balalaika-stereotypical-Russian-folk-music stuff, but just...Russian.  Hard to explain, easy to hear.  Chords and modes, maybe?  I don’t know, just my uneducated impression.  Even if it were sung in a different language, I feel like the musical language is still firmly Russian.  The show will be getting a Korean production in January, and I’m very curious to see if that’ll sound odd, to have that “Russian-ish” score not sung in Russian...
My one complaint is that there’s no cast recording available on CD.  Instead they have this Apple app that lets you listen to the music while choosing which performers you want to hear (since Russian musicals, like Asian ones, are double cast).  That’s cool and all, and I’ve enjoyed playing around with the different casts, but man, it sucks that I needed to get a Russian iTunes account just to get this cast recording and that I have to log into it just to hear this one show.  So, um, maybe a CD for the rest of the world who doesn’t have Russian iTunes...?  Or a DVD, I’d accept that, too.......  <:)
In short, thumbs up, even for the goofy parts (ahem, everything with the steampunk train peeps and with Betsy), and I can’t wait to one day see a “French musical” in a language I actually understand.  ;)
(P.S., next time somebody makes an Anna Karenina adaptation, can we just cut to the chase and do the plotline everybody really came to see?  We can call it “Anna Karenina: Levin’s Story.”)

Also Kingdom Hearts because I'm curious O_O
yess, thank you so much! :D
Top 5 favourite characters: (if you count ff characters, then cloud, squall, yuna, auron, aerith, cid, yuffie… I probs shouldn’t count them) riku, axel, ventus, roxas and aqua.Other characters you like: I like a lot, like sora, marluxia, master of masters and namine. Least favourite characters: I don’t hate anyone, but I am definitely not feeling the xion or kairi hype, and xehanort is a pain.Otps: cloud/squall (I’m saying them here cause this is where I started shipping them), axel/roxas, sora/riku, terra/aqua, roxas/namineNotps: idk, I think xion/roxas is kinda weird since they’re basically the same person. Favourite friendships: sora/riku, sora/squall, axel/roxas, ventus/terra/aqua, mickey/riku, donald/goofy/soraFavourite family: they’re not really a family, but the ff crew in radiant gardenFavourite episodes: favorite game? kingdom hearts 2Favourite season/book/movie: second favorite game? birth by sleepFavourite quotes: “he made me feel like I had a heart. it’s kind of funny. you make me feel the same.” - axel // “I know the keyblade didn’t choose me, and I don’t care. I’m proud to be a small part of something bigger. the people it did choose. my friends, they are my power!” - sora // “sora, you’re lucky. looks like my summer vacation’s…over.”- roxas // “I think I’ll pass. my heart just wouldn’t be in it.” - axelBest musical moment: roxas’ theme when roxas and sora fight in kingdom hearts 2.Moment that made you fangirl/boy the hardest: when the final fantasy characters got revealed, and when axel came to rescue sora at the end of dream drop distance. When it really disappointed you: making 358/2 days about xion rather than roxas, who definitely deserves more attention than he got. also not making cinderella as good as I wanted her to be, and as good as I know she really is.Saddest moment: roxas and axel saying goodbye at the end of kingdom hearts 2.Most well done character death: axel’s death, even though they did undo that.Favourite guest star: I guess ray chase as the master of masters counts, because he is a side character? he’s great in the role. and mark hamill as master eraqus.Favourite cast member: steve burton as cloud, and david gallagher as riku.Character you wish was still alive: well, I wish he was still around: roxasOne thing you hope really happens: they defeat xehanort at the end of kh3 without anyone dying. also, more final fantasy characters. Most shocking twist: the whole time travel business in dream drop distance. When did you start watching/reading?: very, very late. last year. the shame, I know.Best animal/creature: does piglet count?Favourite location: cinderella’s world in birth by sleep, and honestly every location in a fragmentary passage. and radiant garden in kingdom hearts 2.Trope you wish they would stop using: everyone being sora, or everyone being xehanort. One thing this show/book/film does better than others: mixing final fantasy and disney together to create an engaging, wonderful franchise.Funniest moments: the moments at the end of dream drop distance when sora and the rest are having a tea party while waiting for riku to wake up. also basically everything in the manga series.Couple you would like to see: I just want cloud and squall to be canon, but I am not that stupid to actually expect it.Actor/Actress you want to join the cast: there’s never enough richard madden. that’s always my response.Favourite outfit: cloud’s advent children outfit in kingdom hearts 2. Favourite item: the oathkeeper keyblade.Do you own anything related to this show/book/film?: yes, I have the games and I have the manga series. What house/team/group/friendship group/family/race etc would you be in?: I would like to be a part of the final fantasy crew. Most boring plotline: well, recoded sure was a bit unimportant. Most laughably bad moment: nothing, really. Best flashback/flashfoward if any: I like that we got to see little riku and little sora in birth by sleep, it’s not really a flashback but I didn’t expect us to see them there. Most layered character: probably riku. he’s fantastically written, and is a very engaging character. Most one dimensional character: well, maybe some of the disney villains.Scariest moment: I don’t know, I do still find the evil queen and her mirror a bit creepy.Grossest moment: none.Best looking male: probably cloud.Best looking female: I wanna say my girl yuna, but she is barely even visible in the game, sadly. so probably aerith and tifa.Who you’re crushing on (if any): none.Favourite cast moment: I don’t know any of the cast moments, sadly.Favourite transportation: the keyblade glider, and cinderella’s carriage in birth by sleep. Most beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise): the end of kingdom hearts 2, probably.Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: there are a lot, but I suspect some will be answered in kingdom hearts 3. but what got me is, why does vanitas look like teenage sora when sora was only a child when vanitas was created?Best promo: the kingdom hearts 3 promo is very good. give it to me already. At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: the moment I started the first game.
