Whump/ Hurt!Buck Masterlist
Accidental by Rosefield - 36,090 words, teen+
Summary: It was an accident. He slipped. That doesn't mean he isn't going to take advantage of the opportunity that presents itself.
---- Post Lawsuit, Buck accidentally cuts his arm. He decides that maybe not getting help is best for everyone.
--- TW for suicidal idealization and injury that turns into a suicide attempt.
a leaf falls on loneliness by iimpossible_things - 11,163 words, not rated
Summary: Buck doesn’t think that if he were to say, “I’m in a bad place”, that anyone would turn him away. Really, he doesn’t. The 118 has too many good, kind people for that.
But every time he wants to open his mouth, to say something, to reach out to Eddie or Bobby or Hen or Chim, he hears Eddie yelling, “you’re exhausting.”
—you’re exhausting, you’re exhausting, you’re exhausting—
So each day he does his job and he laughs and he jokes and he pretends he’s the care-free goofball he’s always been. And each day he packs away his bruises and his worries, takes them home to his empty loft with its quiet rooms, and licks his wounds in silence.
Always, All Ways by ashavahishta - 85,000 words, explicit
Summary: “Buck is very dear, Mr Diaz. Not only to me but to the pack. You’ll find that if you treat him with anything less than utmost respect you’ll have a lot of people to answer to.”
Eddie swallowed. It was clear that in the absence of a mate, this omega had found himself a very protective pack. “Understood, sir.”
Or: Buck’s the only omega in the 118. He’s got secrets, and walls a mile high.
Eddie’s the alpha determined to knock them down.
blue enough to bruise by renecdote - 3,161 words, teen+
Summary: Two things happen at once:
Buck overbalances, arm slipping from around the bridge.
The rope snaps.
They lock eyes for a second, half a second, Buck’s wide and afraid, Eddie’s probably a match with the way his heart is pounding hard enough to hurt, nothing either of them can do, knowing that there is nothing either of them can do, and then—Buck is falling.
Breath and Shadow by Princessfbi - 20,629 words, teen+
Summary: The words hit the back of Buck’s neck and slid down his spine with the drops of the cold sweat collecting in the small of his back. The weight on Buck’s chest was an echo of what it used to be but still as suffocating as before when those words whirled around on repeat every time someone looked too long, looked too closely.
“He’s fine,” Hen had said to Bobby that day he’d come in sporting a bruise on his face and lying through his teeth about some bullshit with a bicycle.
The day Hen had lied for him too.
fireflies where my caution should be by littlesnowpea - 13,799 words, mature
Summary: “You never talk about your parents,” Eddie says, which is not even remotely what Buck expects Eddie to say. He frowns, tilts his head, but it isn’t a question, as evidenced by Eddie charging on. “I never asked because I figured it was your business, but the look on your face any time they’re brought up tells me you don’t get along.”
Buck swallows hard, against a lump in his throat. His parents? Eddie’s right, he never talks about them, for good reason. He opens his mouth, then closes it again, not sure what he’s even going to say.
Eddie takes it as the answer Buck is trying to make it out to be. He squeezes Buck’s wrist again, takes a deep breath, like he’s on a call with someone who’s panicking. Buck finds his breathing slowing to match Eddie’s, and Eddie nods as Buck gets it under control.
“There are people on the porch,” Eddie says, voice even. “Saying they want to meet their grandchild.”
i'm sinking deeper (reaching for the end of the light) by moodyreindeer - 8,716 words, mature
Summary: "I'm just so tired."
post 3.04, rewrite of 3.05 - when all is said and done, Buck is just really fucking tired of feeling alone.
Love You Sober by Child_Of_Wonderland - 4,545 words, teen+
Summary: Buck twirls the beer bottle around in his fingers and tries to ignore the rapid fading of the warmth in his chest. It's not a feeling he can mimic, no matter how hard he may try, and his brain won't stray from a perfect image of Eddie. To be loved back, that's all he really wants.
one part trust, three parts betrayal (just add fire) by wonderfool (foolmetal) - 14,925 words, teen+
Summary: Buck's parents are in town. It all goes downhill from there.
Overcome by Spicysauce - 53,697, mature
Summary: Or, set post season 5A, where Buck is alone, and angry, and exhausted, but mostly terrified that everyone he loves is slowly slipping away from him.
Reaching In The Dark by Pline - 38,713 words, general
Summary: It all started innocent enough but Buck can no longer deny it.
He has a stalker.
Someone so obsessed with him that they would spend hours and hours following him, unnoticed, taking pictures of him, taking notes of his habits.
But life has been so good lately, and Buck doesn’t want to worry anyone. So he tells no one about it, he can deal with it on his own.
real family by haveufoundwhaturlookingfor - 5,578 words, general
Summary: Buck has a son, but only few people know about him because of Buck's abusive ex-husband. Buck has been terrified of his ex-husband finding him and taking his son away from him, but a minor accident with his son makes him realize that maybe it wouldn't be so bad if he told the 118 about his son.
Taking Smoke with my Coffee by UisceOneLove - 3,930 words, general
Summary: "Order for Firefighter Diaz!"
Eddie knows that coffee runs have typically been deemed a Probie task. He did plenty of them when Bobby first recruited him to the 118. So, tradition dictates that it's supposed ot be Ravi getting them.
But Eddie gets to have a lot of nice things for himself. The things that make even his worst call days just a smidge better.
If anyone (Hen) is interrogating him for details, it's definitely the coffee he's referring to."
I'm not in my gear, Buck," Eddie tells the barista when he approaches the counter.
The smile he looks forward to is waiting for him courtesy of the barista that makes even Eddie have to tip his head back a little bit to make eye contact. "Yeah," Buck drawls as he pushes the tray of coffee towards him, "but you're still on duty."
The Messiest of the Messy by Spicysauce - 16,965 words, teen+
Summary: Irritated, Eddie clenched his fists, starting to turn around. "Why would Buck be eating with us - "
The words died in his throat along with the shatter of the mug against the floor. But Eddie barely noticed he dropped it, his mouth slightly agape as he stared at Buck, took in the bruises, and the blood, and general brokenness of the man before him.
***
Or: After the Lawsuit, Buck is starting to think his team will never forgive him and is feeling lonelier than ever, when his dad shows up, looking for money that Buck doesn't have. Now, his ribs are broken and his face has been pummelled into one big bruise. All he wants to do is retreat to his empty apartment and wallow in his own self-pity, but before that he needs to get his keys, which he'd left at the station the previous night.
Everyone else is on shift, so he's hoping he can sneak into the locker room and be gone before anyone notices he was there, but this is Buck, so of course, nothing goes to plan.
there's frost in the air (but there's home in your eyes) by rogerzsteven - 3,702 words, teen+
Summary: Buck and Eddie are trapped in a train crash.
The Third Drawer by scarletmanuka - 7,767 words, mature
Summary: After his return to work, Buck feels lost and alone due to the way he's been treated by the people he thought were his family. In order to stop the pain, he begins to hurt himself instead.
this is me trying (at least i'm trying) by screaminghalfpastmidnight - 15,393 words, teen+
Summary: Buck never really dealt with his issues after the tsunami and the team never really asked so here he is, two years later - the pier's reopening, a victim shows up and thanks Buck, plus the city wants to give him an award for not dying out of pure luck. So, yeah. Buck's not doing well, everyone knows and Eddie's unsure which lines he should be crossing now that he and Buck are in some weird, middle stage of knowing that they will be together, but aren't yet due to personal reasons (like figuring their own relationship trauma out so they're not shitty partners).
waiting on the sunrise by autumnchills - 28,375 words, teen+
Summary: When Buck left home, it was a rushed decision. He didn’t know where he was going or what he was going to do, but he had a high school diploma and enough street smarts to make it as far from his father as possible.
It's been nearly ten years since then, and now his father is in town. Buck quickly learns that some things haven't changed.
But other things have, and his family will help him realize that.

sorry love, i got a little carried away with this one 🙈
caught up in a blue haze
rated: g | words: 4.3k | read on ao3
summary:
When Eddie looked up to meet the patient, he nearly dropped his clipboard, two pools of ocean blues looking up to him through tear-stained lashes.
The man was cradling his right arm close to him, Eddie spying the awkward and jagged look of it, noting that it was no doubt broken.
What Eddie had expected to see was a douchey frat guy already high on painkillers, though what he saw instead was someone who looked hurt, scared. There was a brokenness laced within his baby blues.
“I—I’m sorry.”
The guy didn’t introduce himself, didn’t ask how long it was going to take, when he could get pills, or even how bad it looked. Eddie had an urge to wrap the guy in his arms and never let go.
Stepping a little closer, Eddie looked the guy over carefully.
“Hey it’s ok, I’m here to help you.”

Jumping on the bandwagon. Let's hit Buck with a car 😂
He doesn't even have to think about it. Chimney needs him, and the bike is right there. He doesn't even realise he's grabbed it until the voices rise behind him, shouting his name as he pumps his feet against the pedals.
In the distance he can see the headlights as the car screeches around a corner, and he hops the curb, racing across the grass to cut them off at the next street.
"Stop!"
He breaks hard, skidding to a stop on the bitumen his hands raised as if he can push the car back with sheer willpower alone.
It's not enough.
Buck sees it all in the space between  heartbeats. The car's going too fast, he's too close. It's not going to stop in time.
The headlights dip, the brakes squealing and time slows.
Between one moment and the next, he's airborne, his stomach clenching at the sudden weightlessness.
He hits the ground with a thud that rattles every bone in his body and shakes free the breath he'd been holding.
The next breath stutters in his chest overwhelmed by the fire that burns up his side.
Sound washes back in– the shrill whine of sirens and the muffled demands for someone to get out of the vehicle.
Buck frowns, his face stinging with the movement. He's not in a vehicle. He's staring up at the sky, dark with clouds and flashes of red and blue.
"—uck."
He turns towards the voice.
"Hey, don't move." Eddie's face swims into view above him. "Buck, don't move."
But he has to, he needs to know.
"Chim? Is he—?"
"He's fine. You stopped the car." Eddie's mouth pulls down into a frown. "That was the stupidest thing you've ever done." His voice shakes, but his hands are steady as they help strip him out of his heavy turnouts.
"— had to do something," Buck mumbles, as the fire spreads burning so hot he barely feels anything at all. "He's my brother."
"Buck. Hey. Eyes open."
"—had to— help—"
***
When he surfaces, it's to softly spoken words. They wash over him, indistinct but familiar and comforting.
"—so much trouble—"
He shifts, testing out the limits of his body. There's pain, but it's muted, sitting right on the edge of not quite but almost too much.
"—might actually wrap you up in cotton wool this time. I think I might help them—"
"Chim?" The name sticks in his throat, catching on raw edges.
"I'm right here."
Buck opens his eyes, blinking against the harsh fluorescent light.
"Hey." Chim leans forward in his chair, wincing when it pulls on his IV. "Maddie's going to be so pissed. I only just convinced her to go home."
"What happened?"
"You don't remember?"
Buck shakes his head, rolling against the pillow.
"You tried to stop a car with your body," Chim tells him, leaning back in his chair. "And I guess it worked." He cracks a grin. "Though I'm not sure I ever want to repeat the experience of watching you fly over a bonnet."
"You're okay?" Buck asks, his eyes drifting towards the IV stand beside Chim's chair.
"Yeah, bumps and bruises." Chimney scratches at the tape on the back of his hand. "They were just keeping me for observation. I should be going home tonight."
"Tonight?"
"Yeah, your little stunt was last night." Chimney leans forward again, bracing his hands on the edge of the bed. "I made Maddie go home, but I think Eddie might still be around here. Your doctor's making him wait until visiting hours begin."
"But not you?"
Chimney grins. "I'm not a visitor," he says, holding up his hand with its plastic bracelet. "Those rules don't apply to me."
Buck huffs a soft laugh, wincing when the movement jars his ribs. He brings a hand up to press against his side, as if that will hold everything inside.
"So what's the damage?" Buck can feel the pulse of his heartbeat through his skin.
"Four broken ribs, a lacerated spleen and a lifetime of emotional scarring for those of us who had to watch," Chim says dryly. "For someone who got hit by a car, I think you were the one who suffered the least. You got to sleep through it all while we were waiting to hear if you were going to make it."
Buck hesitates, dragging his lip between his teeth. "I'm not sorry," he says, catching Chimney's haze. "I'd do it again. If it meant saving you."
Chimney sighs, deflating against his chair. "Yeah, I know." He reaches forward, gripping Buck's free hand. "We've gotta work on these self preservation skills of yours, Buck." He gives the hand a squeeze and lets it go. "Now, should we put Eddie out of his misery and call him in?"

Reach For Me and I'll Reach For You 8.7k teen
It shouldn’t be so easy, Eddie thinks blinking up at the ceiling, to recognise that you’ve been involved in an explosion. You really have to think about what kind of life you’ve lead if there’s no shock just a kind of numb acceptance that the ache in your body and the ringing in your ears is because something just blew up.
A quick check reveals all his limbs are still where he left them, and nothing is leaking too much. He groans as he tries to move and then he remembers he hadn’t been alone.
Buck.
He curses under his breath, a combination of pain as he moves and worry about his partner.
That worry only intensifies as he scans their surroundings. He can’t see him anywhere, Buck was right next to him and Eddie thinks he probably took the worst of the blast that sent them flying.
He calls out and gets nothing back, calling again gets the same result and tightens his chest, his worry ratcheting up into something that would be called fear if he wasn’t clamping down firmly on his feelings.
“Buck!”
The third shout makes something shift in the rubble ahead of him, moving forward he recognises the familiar outline of a body in a turnout jacket. It’s  mostly covered by dust and debris  but recognisable now as his missing partner. The rubble shifts again.
“Buck.” That's the fourth time he’s said his name and this time it's on a breath of sheer relief. At least he’s moving, he can work with that.
He clears the way as fast as he can. He needs to check Buck’s ok; get them moving, get them out. He has no idea what exploded or why and more importantly if there’ll be any more blasts.
They’re on their own, higher up than everyone else and have further to go to get out of this mess.
His radio crackles and Bobby’s distorted voice come through.
“Diaz , Buckley…”  the rest is lost to static.
He clicks his radio, hoping Bobby will hear him,
“Here Cap. I’m ok, Buck’s hurt, not sure how bad.” He runs his hand over Buck’s head as he talks, but before he can check further Buck gasps and tries to sit up. He’s not particularly successful but it’s a good sign. Eddie holds him down, radio forgotten.
“Woah, hold on, take a minute.”
“Eddie?” Buck sounds confused, but he settles under Eddie’s hand trusting him completely.
“Are you hurt?”
Buck blinks a few time trying to focus before he says “head hurts but think I’m ok.”
Eddie takes him at his word and helps him up slowly. Buck wobbles but a hand on his shoulder is all he needs to steady him.
“You good?” Eddie peers into Buck’s eyes to check, he looks a little unfocused but he nods. Eddie’s not convinced but he’s up and he seems ok, Hen and Chim can check him properly when they’re out. He hasn’t got time to do it now, they need to get moving.
Eddie takes the lead through the darkness, it’s a little hard to see with just their torches but he manages and Buck follows closely. Neither of them turn around so the pool of blood left behind goes unnoticed.

Whumptober 2022 - Prompt No. 2
Prompt No. 2: Nowhere To Run
Cornered | Caged | Confrontation
Summary: Dr. Wells comes back to mess with Buck.
Content Warnings: Disassociation (detailed), Negative Self Talk (brief), Non Consensual Kissing (detailed), Non Consensual Touching (detailed), Past Rape/Non-Con (mentioned)
@whumptober-archive
Also posted on ao3 here.
Buck hated these days. The days were it was his job to stay behind and clean everything. While it didn’t happen that often anymore, now that him and the rest of the 118 had mostly put the lawsuit behind them.
Still, he hated the crushing loneliness that threatened to overtake him when he was left alone. The fear that when they left, they would leave him behind for good this time. Sighing, Buck decided he should probably shake himself out of his thoughts and decided he might as well take out the trash to the dumpsters out back.
He had just finished putting the bag into the dumpster when he sensed someone standing behind him. Turning around he said, “Hello. Can I help-” before cutting himself off, realizing who it was.
“Hello Buck.” The words were cheerful but the tone was dark and menacing. It made him nervous.
“Dr. Wells?”
“Not anymore. You lost me my job and my license.” Buck was staring to feel slight panic. The woman in front of him was angry, and she was angry at him.
“That wasn’t my fault.” She inched closer to him until Buck was backed against the wall, fear flashing in his eyes. He suddenly remembered the exact feelings he had last time they interacted, not the fake ones he convinced himself he felt, but the raw terror and powerlessness he felt.
“Stop playing around Buck. You were a sex addict. You still are. You brought up being Facebook friends. You had sex with me. Not the other way around. Of course I lost my job because of you. It’s all your fault. Everything is always your fault Buck .”
With each added word, Buck felt himself sinking lower and lower to the ground, attempting to push as far back into the wall as was physically possible.
“Just remember. You caused every bad thing that ever happened to you.” She caressed his face with her hand, her long nails scratching his face as he whimpered beneath her.
“Please don’t.” They words were lacking the power he wished they had, the power that he felt being taken from him as she moved closer and closer to him.
She leaned down to kiss him and he whimpered again, praying to anything and anyone that would hear him to make it stop. Idly, he wondered if the 118 was back yet and if anyone even noticed he was gone if they were.
All he felt was the searing heat of the kiss, a burning that felt more akin to hot coals in his mouth, rather than the firework feeling people usually talked about. He felt violated and there was nothing he could do to stop it.
He should be able to stop it. Why wasn’t he stopping it? Maybe she was right. Maybe he was still a sex addict. Maybe he was Buck 1.0 all over again. Maybe he was never not the reckless kid who lived for sex. Maybe that was all he was.
He lost track of the time that passed as she continued kissing him and running her hands all over him. He felt oddly detached from his body and hardly felt the wet tears on his face anymore or the constant whimpering sound he was making.
He vaguely registered the sound of footsteps approaching as he felt her pulling away. He heard voices overlapping as he continued to stare off at a specific point off in the distance.
“Get away from him.”
“Bobby call Athena, she might be able to help.”
Time must have passed because suddenly there was a person kneeling beside him and Buck flinched away.
“Hey, it’s alright Buck. It’s just me. It’s Eddie. I’m not going to hurt you.”
“...Eddie?” Buck’s voice sounded hoarse and raspy even to his own ears and it made him want to flinch away again.
“Do you think you can get up and walk with me Buck?” He shook his head. “Can I touch you so I can guide you inside?” He hesitantly nodded, mentally bracing himself for Eddie’s touch.
Buck watched, detached, as he was led to the couch, Eddie’s arms firmly on his so he didn’t collapse like he so desperately wanted to. Hen and Chimney came up the stairwell shortly after, updating them on what had happened.
“Bobby just called Athena, she’s on the way.”
“Why did you do that?” Buck asked, speaking the first full, coherent sentence since they had found him in the alleyway.
“I figured she could help with the legal side of things in case you want to press charges.” Bobby said as he climbed up the stairway to the lounge area where Buck was currently latching onto Eddie for dear life.
When Athena arrived, she helpfully laid it all out for him, without getting too caught up in emotion. “Unfortunately, because it was just non consensual kissing and touching, we cannot take her to court. However, what we can do is file a restraining order that will keep her from getting near you.”
Buck nodded, “Yeah… yeah that sounds good. I want to do that.” They got to work on the paper work while Bobby was cooking dinner and the rest of the 118 was lounging around, providing comfort to Buck in the fact that they were there and they weren’t leaving him this time.

7x04 being from Buck's perspective broke my brain because of the way we saw Eddie through Buck's eyes. Then I realized that Suspicion, where Eddie was shot, was from Eddie's perspective, and all of Surviviors was from Buck's perspective and I want to jump into the ocean.
#the implications......#we saw eddie's turmoil when carla brought up the follow your heart line#his agony over charlie's abuse#then the shooting and watching his best friend splattered with his blood#that split second where he realized who buck was to him and has been all along#the way he wanted to reach out and touch buck one last time#(do not think about eddie thinking about chris under any circumstances but if you do imagine eddie feeling relieved that buck will be there#and sorrow that he won't be there with chris and won't get to see him grow up and won't get to see buck#and then we have survivors right#we immediately jump to buck's perspective with him getting eddie into the ambulance and eddie asking if buck was hurt *sobs*#and the whole episode is mostly buck's side#but so is the will scene!!!!#because we obviously went nuts over the implications of it#but consider the tone of the scene--there's devotion yes#but most of the tone is that of disbelief#because buck can't believe eddie did this and eddie didn't tell him and eddie is telling him now#and eddie wants buck to carry on for christopher if eddie is gone#and buck absolutely would#but in his mind he can't fathom a world where he has to exist without eddie#and eddie is the one asking him to#hahahahah fuck you don't find it son you make it all over again#buck made this and buck chose this and buck has to live with it#i can't wait for these men to realize/bring to light all the love between them#911 abc#this unraveling on a saturday afternoon is brought to you by insanity

So, yeah. Buck's not doing well, everyone knows and Eddie's unsure which lines he should be crossing now that he and Buck are in some weird, middle stage of knowing that they will be together, but aren't yet due to personal reasons (like figuring their own relationship trauma out so they're not shitty partners).

[read on ao3]
___
As soon as he starts the car and pulls out of the parking lot at the station, he thinks he doesn’t wanna go home, like all the time lately. Well, he doesn’t wanna go to his loft. He’s not sure he can call it home, it’s- it’s not. It probably never has been and never will be. He thinks he knows what home feels like, with Eddie and Christopher, if he’s even allowed to think about their house like that. That’s his home, that’s where he feels safe and comfortable, and like he can just be himself, and be wanted.
He doesn’t want to go to the loft. He doesn’t want to go home, either, doesn’t wanna bother Eddie, worry him, when he has no explanation for how and why he feels the way he feels. His screwed up head is his concern, Eddie is probably busy anyway.
Ever since he died, Buck has been feeling… off. Numb. Sad. Exhausted. He’s not even sure how to explain it, how to voice it, so he doesn’t. When people ask how he is, he says he’s fine. And he is, he swears he is. He’s okay, he’s alive, he has his amazing friends and family, a job he loves, everything is fine. But… but. He’s not sure what the hell is wrong, but a part of him is not fine. Hasn’t been fine since the lightning strike.

Bad Things Happen Bingo - knocked out
911 - buddie - 400 words
"Hey, there he is!"
Pain.
That's the first thing Buck's aware of when he blinks his eyes open. His head feels like it's about to crack in two, right down the middle, like an egg.
They had eggs for breakfast. Kind of. They had pancakes. But there are eggs in pancakes, which makes them almost healthy. They're healthy adjacent.
"Not with the amount of maple syrup Chris uses."
It's the same argument every time. Buck always caves when Chris asks for pancakes.
Not now though. It's not time for breakfast, it's time to sleep.
"No it's not. Come on Buck, eyes open for us."
He doesn't remember closing them, but he must have because when he opens them—
Pain.
He notices the pain first— it's impossible to ignore.
The next thing he notices are the worried faces that swim into focus above him.
"What happened?" His tongue weighs heavy in his mouth, and his words slur in his effort to get them out.
"You hit your head." Eddie's face peers down at him. "Do you remember?"
He tries to shake his head. He didn't hit it, he cracked it, like an egg.
"Hey, stop that. You need to keep still," Eddie says, and Buck can feel his hands, warm and sure on the sides of his head.
"'m okay," he insists, fighting against the heavy fog that threatens to pull him back under.
There's a chuckle from somewhere off to his left.
"Forgive us for not trusting your expert medical opinion," Chim says, leaning over him. "But unless you fell into an alternate universe while you were unconscious, where you became a paramedic, your opinion means nothing."
Buck squints up at him, trying to make sense of Chim's words.
"We're taking you to hospital, Buck," Hen says, her voice gentle. "So you can get an MRI." She turns to someone out of sight. "Let's get him on a backboard."
"You know the drill." Eddie hovers him again. "Just let us do all the work."
There's a pressure on his shoulders, his hip, and suddenly he's on his side swallowing down the nausea that rolls hot and bitter in the back of his throat. Almost as quickly, he's staring up at the sky again.
"Ed—?"
"I'm right here."
They're in the back of the ambulance, and Eddie has one of Buck's hands clasped tightly in his own.
"Stay?"
"I'm not going anywhere."

can we TALK about Buck and Chris's postures in that still????? They both are like curled away from each other in a defensive position LIKE THIS IS A CONVERSATION WITH SOME CONFLICT i am soooooooo!!!!!!!!!! CURIOUS because you know what we've never seen before??? We've never seen conflict between Buck and Chris. But we HAVE seen conflict between Chris and Eddie. Because that is a normal healthy thing for preteens to have with their parents!!!! and to me this just signifies Buck stepping even further into that parental role........

i'm sorry i've watched eddie's doubletake about a hundred times now and i just. i know we're all joking about him forgetting he got hit by lightning but you can literally see him just completely forget about his own pain. he's gritting his teeth and grimacing, then he sees buck and his whole face just goes slack. like.
