(The styling of this whumplist is inspired by @love-me-a-lotta-whump who has an amazing blog, go check them out!)
Synopsis: The firefighters of the 118 work with other first responders to save lives in various emergency situations. Throughout this, they must learn to balance their own personal lives with the stressors of the job.
Note: This show is a great combination of drama, humor, and emotion that is definitely worth the watch (though it does require a bit of suspension of disbelief, the emergencies they deal with are WEIRD). The characters have such a great family bond with each other, and their development and interactions are amazing. This show has tons of emotional whump, as well as some great physical whump moments. I highly recommend. There is whump for EVERY main character, and I am not over-exaggerating when I say that.
TW’s: general blood/gore, child abuse and neglect, sexual assault (mild/not shown on screen), PTSD, alcohol and drug abuse, suicide, gun violence, depression and mental illness, panic attacks, death, pregnancy/childbirth, domestic abuse, natural disasters, and various other emergency situations that could be potentially triggering.
(For more detailed trigger warnings, click here)
My word of advice is if you are uncomfortable with a situation/storyline, skip it. Most emergencies/911 calls are not essential to the overall storyline! I’ve had to skip a few myself, they can get pretty gross sometimes.

Buck/Eddie: I’m Underneath the Undertow, Come Dry Me Off and Hold me Close
This is the third story in the “Good News on My TV Screen” series, where Buck is a news reporter and Eddie is a firefighter. In this one, Buck is swept away by the tsunami while reporting at the pier, and Eddie sees it all happen live on the news.
This can also be read on Ao3
(Thank you so much to everyone for bearing with me on my lack of writing-my writer’s block has been reeallly bad, plus there has been some major decision making happening in real life.)
"We're watching the news again, huh?" Hen teased, sitting down on the couch by Eddie, who had the remote in hand, eyes glued to the screen. Eddie nodded, blushing slightly as he kept a tight grip on the remote. "Don't worry, we won't make you change the channel. We're all pretty fond of your boy too."
"Loverboy o'clock?" Chimney asked, nudging Eddie in the side as he joined him and Hen on the couch.
"You should talk," Eddie goodnaturedly bantered back, gesturing at Chimney's phone. "How many times have you texted Buck's sister since you got here this morning?"
"Oh look, Buck's on," Chimney said quickly, and Eddie's attention was immediately completely on the television screen, a smile already growing across his face.
"Buck's been so excited for this," Eddie said, unable to take his eyes off the way the sun hitting the water reflected off to illuminate Buck's smiling face.
"We've noticed," Bobby called out fondly, striding over and resting his arms on the back of the couch. When Buck hadn't been bouncing around with happiness at Eddie's house, he had been excitedly exclaiming to everyone at the firehouse how glad he was he got to cover Opening Day of the First Annual Play at the Pier Festival.
Eddie quickly shushed the group as Buck opened his mouth and began to speak. "Hello, I'm Evan Buckley, and I'm here on a beautiful day at the First Annual Play at the Pier Fe-"
Buck broke off at the same time Eddie leapt at the screen, as if he could reach through and pull Buck to safety. Buck must have seen something in his cameraman's eyes, because he turned, spied the receded water, and screamed "Run!". The cameraman dropped his camera onto the sand, and then the tsunami was on it, swirling the camera around until it broke and the screen went black.
Eddie felt like his brain was stuck on repeat, just BuckBuckBuckBuckBuck , his hand pressing against the empty television screen. He knew he had collapsed to his knees, knew Hen and Chimney and Bobby were all around him, hands on him in support, but all Eddie could feel was his heart shattering.
The bells shrilled and Eddie leapt to his feet, staggering towards the truck. He imagined trucks all over the city racing towards the tsunami site, willed all of them to find Buck safe and sound, as he threw himself into the seat and yanked out his phone. Dialing Buck's number, Eddie choked out "Fuck," as he shook his head in response to the others' hopeful glances.
Hitting redial over and over got him the same response every time, and suddenly he hit another number, fingers clenching at his turncoat. "Carla, Chris can't watch TV tonight, I know he always watches when Buck's reporting, but he can't," Eddie stammered out. "Do whatever you have to do, pull the power cord, cut off the cable, but please Carla, he can't see." Carla's reassuring voice, words indescernible, came over the line, and Eddie blinked back tears. "Thank you Carla, I'll let you know as soon as I know."
"We won't give up on him," Hen assured him, resting a hand on his shoulder from the seat next to him.
"We love that kid too," Chim added, "we won't let him down."
"Cap, what if he-" Eddie stifled a sob into the heel of his hand.
"Then we bring him home," Bobby said softly, and Eddie nodded, choking tears muffled into the sleeve of his turncoat.
****
Buck breached the surface of the water, gasping in a deep breath as he blinked water from his eyes, trying to find a stationary point admist the swirling chaos. Spotting a board, Buck grabbed onto it to give himself some support, treading water as he worked to stay in one place. Blinking what he knew to be blood out of his eyes, he quickly took in his surroundings before the water swept him away again.
When he next surfaced, it was to spot a moored firetruck a few feet away, stuck in the water and newly formed mud. There were already a few people on top, but plenty more space, and Buck winced as he swam towards it, refusing to let a painful gash across his stomach override his survival instinct.
Reaching the firetruck, Buck grabbed gratefully at the outstretched hands, using them, his sturdy muscles, and his feet to haul himself up. Upon reaching the top, he rolled gratefully onto his back, taking in deep breaths, flinching as each inhale caused his wounded stomach to rise. There was suddenly a shirt in Buck's hands and he nodded gratefully, pushing it against the gash, biting his lip not to cry out in pain.
"Thank you," Buck gasped out, working to steady his breathing. "I'm Buck."
"I recognized you from the news," the man who had given him the shirt admitted, offering up a small smile. His face was scratched, as were the hands he used to gesture. "I'm Bryan, this is my wife Tracy. Over there we have Peter and Kelly, and their daughter Annabelle." Buck nodded towards everyone, offering Annabelle a smile that she timidly returned. "Are you okay?"
"If I had the supplies, I could sew it up myself," Buck answered, raising the shirt to look again at the wound. "Navy Seals," he added in response to the stares he got. "But my boyfriend is a firefighter with a medic background. He'll find us." Coughing, he flinched, pressing the shirt against his stomach again. Catching Annabelle's wide-eyed stare, he smiled at her, his tone reassuring. "He won't give up. And we won't either."
***
Eddie stared at the carnage out the truck window. Even from a distance, he could tell the destruction the tsunami had ravaged. He'd lost count of how many bodies had floated by as they'd readied themselves for their rescue mission.
But he knew none of them were Buck.
"Alright, we're going to be pairing up in boats," Bobby's voice rang out from next to Eddie. "Search for survivors, triage what you can, get them back to dry land where we can get them to the nearest hospitals. Diaz, you're with me."
Nodding gratefully, Eddie climbed into the boat, taking the medical equipment from Bobby as the Captain climbed in as well. As soon as they were quickly settled, the boat took off, Eddie's eyes constantly searching from one side to the other.
Bile rose in the back of his throat as he spotted the floating body passing by, a man facedown dressed in a simple white t-shirt and jeans. But just as quickly Eddie realized the man was far too short and skinny to be his boyfriend. Eddie knew Buck's body better than he knew his own. Pressing the back of his hand to his mouth, Eddie swallowed thickly, closing his eyes for just a second before opening them again.
"You okay there?" Bobby asked in concern, squeezing Eddie's shoulder.
"I will be, as soon as we find Buck," Eddie answered, wiping his mouth before turning back to the task at hand.
***
Buck glanced over at his now-companions. He could see Annabelle in her mother's arms, tears streaking her cheeks as her parents tried to distract her from the carnage around her. "What are your favorite things, Annabelle?" Buck asked, forcing a cheerful smile across his face, even as the gash across his stomach throbbed.
"Princesses and space," she croaked out through her tears.
"Well that's very lucky, because I've interviewed princesses, and my friend Christopher has taught me a lot about space," Buck answered, and he could instantly see the excitement in Annabelle's eyes as her mother brought her closer to Buck.
"Really?" Annabelle asked, a small smile growing across her face.
"Really," Buck assured her. "The princesses were all very nice, and space is the coolest."
"I really like the Milky Way the most," Annabelle told him.
"Chris loves the Milky Way too, we actually made as much of it as we could fit in glow in the dark stars on his bedroom ceiling," Buck told her. "We had to scale it down, of course, but it still turned out really cool."
"Could we do that too?" Annabelle asked her mom and dad eagerly, and they offered Buck watery smiles of thanks as they discussed just what they would need. Buck smiled back, then settled back against the truck's ladder, pressing against his wound and waiting for Eddie.
And then as if Buck had summoned him by sheer love and longing, the sound of a boat approaching hit their ears, and Eddie was right there. "Buck!" Eddie yelled, scrambling out of the boat before it had even come to a full stop, grabbing for Buck and pulling him close, clutching him tight enough that when Eddie pulled away, there was matching blood on his shirt. "Buck?" The joy on Eddie's face quickly dropped to horror, as his eyes fell on the blood, and inevitably to Buck's stomach.
"Baby, hey," Buck murmured," cupping Eddie's cheek, drawing his attention back to Buck's face. "You and I both know that I just need this flushed out, some stitches, and it probably won't even scar. I'll be fine." He leaned in for a kiss and Eddie immediately deepened it, hands clasping Buck's, holding on tightly as he took in the air Buck was really, truly breathing.
"Sweetheart," Eddie murmured, dusting light kisses across Buck's nose and cheeks before pulling him into another hug, careful of his wound. "I love you so much, and you are absolutely lettting me look at that gash in the boat, and as soon as we get to the triage center."
"I love you too, and I won't argue with that," Buck agreed, and Eddie raised his eyebrow, causing Buck to start laughing. "I promise! No arguments."
Gaze softening, Eddie took Buck's hands in his and raised them to his lips, kissing each knuckle, as Bobby helped Annabelle and her parents into another boat that had just pulled up. "It's been a terrible day, baby, and I just want to take care of you. I need to make sure you're okay."
"This day has royally sucked," Buck nodded, body sagging with exhaustion into Eddie's waiting arms. Scooping him up gently, Eddie lowered him into the boat, immediately following him, Buck's head falling onto Eddie's shoulder, Eddie pressing a kiss to his temple.
"I've got you now," followed Buck into slumber.
When he next woke up, it was to the tug of an IV, the beeping of monitors, and the reassuring pressure of Eddie's head on the hospital mattress. Buck could feel the tug that indicated the hospital gown covered up a row of stitches and that the IV covered any pain. Raising his hand, Buck lightly stroked his fingers through Eddie's hair, elicting a contented sigh from Eddie's lips as he moved his face on the mattress, nuzzling closer to Buck's touch.
"Hi baby," Buck said softly, continuing his ministrations. Then he chuckled, lightly tapping Eddie's cheek, grinning as Eddie's eyes opened. "This is Evan Buckley, reporting alive from the hospital."
The grin quickly dropped off Buck's face as he saw the tears forming in Eddie's eyes, the way Eddie clutched Buck's hand so tight it almost hurt. "Eds, I'm sorry I woke you up, I just knew if it was me in your place, I'd want to know right away when you were awake, but I should have let you sleep," Buck babbled, his words quickly cut off by Eddie's lips on his. Eddie tasted salty, and his body was shaking, and Buck clung on like a lifeline.
"I saw it happen," Eddie choked out, burying his face in Buck's shoulder. "We were watching the news and I saw you get swept away, and I thought-" He broke off, shook his head, and climbed carefully into the hospital bed, nestling into Buck's uninjured side. "I thought things I never ever want to think again."
"I'm okay, sweetheart, I promise," Buck assured him, bringing his head to rest on Eddie's. "You saved me, just like I knew you would. I'll be back reporting on goat yoga and the newest frozen yogurt shop in no time, thanks to you."
"Great, you'll have Chris wanting a pet goat then," Eddie teased back hoarsely. He chuckled, and Buck laughed back, squeezing Eddie's hand. "No mention of that when he arrives please. He's making a picture for his Buck to help you feel better after getting hurt at work. We can tell him more when he gets here. I made sure he didn't see the news."
"Thank you so much for doing that," Buck whispered, and Eddie nodded, sliding up the bed enough to find Buck's mouth with his own.
"I've got your back," Eddie promised, pulling back just enough for Buck to hear him.
"And I've got yours," Buck promised right back, leaning into the kiss.
"Evan Buckley, reporting alive," Eddie echoed, wiping a tear from his eye as he grinned at Buck.
"Damn right," Buck grinned back, and he and Eddie kissed until the nurse came in to scold them for affecting the heart monitors.
