Returning Home (pt3/4) - A HTTYD Book fic.

Fishlegs takes care of Hiccup following the events of the quest.

1200 words

Fishlegs smiled. He stretched his hand out towards the sun and peered at the horizon. A small cloud of dragons were emerging from the West, the Viking boats below following shortly after. So the quest had been a success. He stayed standing on Highest Point for a while, watching the boats make their way towards Berk. They were a little singed, a little scratched, but otherwise in good shape. ‘Come on Horrorcow,’ he called to his hunting dragon, who had been munching at the grasses. She flapped onto his shoulder and the two of them began to walk to the harbour.

The boggy grassland of Berk was a difficult thing to venture through. The ground was never fully decided on whether it was solid or not, so a very sturdy looking clump of grass could give way to knee high sticky mud. The harbour soon came into view and Fishlegs could hear the shouts of Vikings on the wind. He began to quicken his pace, a coil of dread gathering in the pit of his stomach, and by the time he had reached the boats he was running.

Camicazi was one of the first to descend from the ship. There was a look in her eyes that Fishlegs hadn’t seen since the war. With a flicker of fear he asked ‘What’s happened to him?’

‘It was a trap, Fishlegs.’

‘What?’

‘He’s been hurt pretty badly. The roof collapsed onto him.’

Fishlegs raced towards the boats. Four men were carrying a stretcher across the gang-plank and onto land. Hiccup lolled on top, jolting with every step the men took. Fishlegs screeched to a halt next him. Hiccup’s chest was rising and falling in a regular rhythm, bloodied and covered with soot and dirt. He grabbed his friend’s wrist: normal pulse, felt his forehead: fighting a fever. ‘What are his injuries?’ Fishlegs demanded, continuing to search Hiccup’s body and assessing the damage.

‘Wounds to the chest and head,’ said a voice from one of the men. ‘Broken ribs, we think, and fractured arm.’

‘He was lucky.’ Barbara stepped into view; a lot of her bright red hair had escaped her braid. She looked exhausted. ‘There was only one storey and he missed the worst of it.’ Then her gaze lifted to meet his own and he could see the battle in her bright green eyes. ‘The Gods were on our side.’ It could have been worse. It could have been much worse.

There was a path - not a path exactly more like a stretch of slightly sturdier and dryer heath - that lead from the Harbour to the Hooligan Village. Hiccup and Fishlegs grew up on these craggy Berk marshes. Here they would trudge home from lessons, train their dragons and escape from the hubbub of the Hooligan Village. Now, Fishlegs ran through them with Hiccup’s limp body at his side, carried to the Healing Hut where the doors were slammed open and the King was laid in gently onto the bed in the centre of the room.

‘Get me some honey,’ Fishlegs ordered. ‘Boiled water. Clean cloth. Yarrow, as much of it as you can, Verbena, Ground Ivy and,’ he stripped away Hiccup’s shirt and surveyed the blood and bruising. He steeled himself. ‘Mayweed if there is some. Chamomile will do if you can’t find any.’ With quick strides and heavy feet, the men left.

The wooden shutters were shoved open so bright light illuminated the hut. Fishlegs turned back to Hiccup and rolled up his sleeves, he had a job to do.

Fishlegs had never been a warrior, even during the war and the perilous days of his childhood, he was never a natural fighter. He was skilled enough in battle if he went Berzerk, but that side of him died with his father. After the war, Fishlegs turned to fixing things. Helping to repair the huts in the village, tending to the woods and gardens after the dragon fires. He learned the art of healing from Old Wrinkly, and then he mended the people, too. He took some clean cloth and pressed it to a gash in Hiccup’s chest, holding it there as it turned a deep red. He was used to patching up Hiccup. Growing up on these rugged islands and with dragons, even a fang-free one, meant that treating little injuries became an almost daily occurrence. And in the Secret Hideout* Fishlegs took it upon himself to make sure that Hiccup and Camicazi were alright, a role that he hadn’t dropped in the last six years. It had never been as bad as this, though, not since the last days of the war.

The door creaked and Barbara joined him again with two full buckets from the well. She wet a clean cloth, wrung it out, and placed it on Hiccup’s forehead, cooling his fever. Her features were set and believing.

‘I’ve no idea how he pulled that one off, Fishlegs.’ The worry that he felt was not reflected in her voice. He used her to steady himself.

‘Nor do I,’ he breathed as he used the fresh water to clean the wounds.

And so they stayed, until the dusk gathered in the West, working tirelessly until their job was done. Until Hiccup’s chest and arm were bound, wounds were cleaned, pressed with herbs and dressed, until their hands were red and their eyes weary.

‘You should get some sleep.’ Fishlegs said at last.

‘So should you.’

Fishlegs couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Hiccup.

‘Barbara, I –’

‘Don’t worry,’ she rose (Fishlegs had insisted that she took the stool) and walked to him. She reached out a hand and brushed hair from his brow. ‘I know.’ Warmth lingered from her touch like the first golden sun beam after a storm.

‘I’ll come in the morning.’

He smiled, ‘ok’.

And so she left, and Fishlegs was alone with Hiccup. He took a blanket from the shelf by the fireside and lay it over Hiccup’s sleeping form, gently tucking him in. He then leaned over and rested his forehead upon Hiccup's. ‘You’ll be alright’ he whispered. He drew the stool to the bedside and rested his head upon his hands, watching the rise and fall of his friend’s chest.

When Barbara found them, many hours later when she returned at the break of day, Fishlegs was sitting slumped in the stool beside Hiccup’s bed, head resting on folded arms upon the bed. The King lay stretched out on the bed, one arm bent upwards and his head turned towards it, the colour back in his cheeks. Unthinking, Barbara took the cloak from around her shoulders and lay it over Fishlegs. She reached out to take his glasses and noticed that his eyelids fluttered, lashes dancing the way they did when he dreamed. She gently took the glasses from his face, folded them and placed them on the bedside table.

‘Let’s leave them to sleep.’ She said to Horrorcow and Toothless, who hovered by the doorway. She clicked the door shut, readjusted her boots, and set off to the dragon stables, knowing that a chaotic hubbub awaited her there.

Sooo... Let's meet, right? The idea of having little private blog with thoughts, (re)posts and, maybe, kind of art seems veery pleasant!

You can call me Elisheva (El) or Microspinach with she/her pronouns. And yes, i live in circus Russia :D There is many things connected with this fact starting from my fear of the future and ending with wishing have a practice of English here (right me please! you are always welcome!)

I'm a roleplayer in D&D and World of darkness ("Vampire the Masquerade" but getting into another series in plans). Here you can find jokes from sessions and some cool things connected with characters.

I find relaxation and rest in diving into fandoms as cartoons, musicals, films and books. I prefer fantasy and fantastic in books and here will be posts dedicated to The Lord of the Rings and How to train your dragon (books). Hamilton is always in my heart! The Owl House is also in my heart! And maybe i can find some content about Undertale

And i am going to post some situations and thoughts about my routine. For example, i identify myself as ecologist-hydrobiologist beginner, have some mental health troubles and enjoy to make different outfits, maybe stories about it will be interesting. I can say that i am the musical person so music means a lot for me and it will be reflected here

my hot take is that i would've been fine if natla had changed virtually everything... character names, aesthetics, plot beats, character choices, etc. IF it had been more culturally accurate and respectful.

instead natla changes virtually nothing except the removal of sokka's sexism while increasing pakku's and the general north's, while also not being willing to commit to it (see: yue breaking off her engagement pre-show with zero consequences, which also undersells their new angle of her resenting/disliking the expectations her community has for her). we get one scene of katara doing braiding/weaving with her gran gran and mother. no other elements of water tribe culture are present that weren't there in the show, and others are removed. the water tribes don't even get to explain their own culture and relationship to the spirits, the fire nation does it. iroh being called out for ba sing se by an angrily grieving earth kingdom soldier is undercut by iroh coming off looking better when he spares the man and the man still strikes him afterwards from behind. because, y'know, the show that literally has fire nation characters critique an earth kingdom soldier for being corrupted by war, calls jet an outright terrorist and remove all of his nuance, and have katara say jet is just like the fire nation to his face isn't both sides'ing an imperialist genocidal conflict at all, obviously /s.

like, what the fuck are we doing here?

if natla wanted to radically change character arcs, struggles, backstories, and plot beats (avatars having glimpses of the future and that's why we head to the north, etc) they should've just wholly committed. the httyd movies are nothing like the books, but they change enough to be their own story in their own right (literally, they only keep a father-son relationship and the setting and half the character names; everything else is different). and they told a different, but really fucking good story.

for example: why not have there be zero sexism, and katara fights pakku for the right to learn any waterbending (healing or fighting) because they see her as an outsider who can't understand their culture, the same way there are stories about indigenous people working hard to reconnect to their culture after being separated from it due to colonization? why are we doing the same things, but worse, every time?

i'm not mad at natla for not being a 1:1 adaptation. i'm mad because every single unnecessary change it makes to the characters' core backstories and personalities are less effective than the OG, are not adequately addressed in story at any point, or has things ham-fisted in for no reason (yue being able to go into the spirit world has no bearing on the actual plot, for example; it's just There, because...?).

it's not more culturally sensitive than the og; instead, in many ways, it's less, and i think that's the biggest waste of it all.

When Httyd is my favorite movie trilogy then this is my favorite Book doulogy ever!

Six of crows is by far, for me at least, the best book series I‘ve read. Such interesting Characters with emotional and sad backstories that tie perfectly in the main Story. Ketterdam is by far one of the coolest fictional locations ever. The Barrel is awesome, the crow club, the dregs, the whole atmosphere and aesthetic is so well thought out. The entire heist is such an amazing story in the first book and it continues to be amazing in the sequel. The Plottwists are great and very well written. The interactions and dynamics between the Characters are very interesting because all of them are so different. And Kaz Brekker, Holy Shit this Guy is just a Masterpiece of a morally grey Character. No other morally grey male character that I read about can hold a candle to him. Xaden Riorson is a Joke in Comparison, I don’t feel sorry about that. He is smart, he is cruel and so complex. If he would live in our World he would take the Wall Street down and crash it total. Kaz Brekker is out of all morally grey protagonists on another level. This Man is out of this world. Leigh Bardugo is a real Genuis. This Doulogy is a Masterpiece.

I can Highly recommend this doulogy. I promise, you will not be disappointed you will be amazed. I really need to read this doulogy again it’s so freaking good.

Also the crows deserve a whole Movie dedicated to them, they deserve the world.

I adore the httyd books with a passion but I honestly think twoo is a tiny bit better. My opinion on this does vary but most of the time I truly think twoo had so much to offer. And that's not to say httyd doesn't have as much to offer, I just liked the aesthetic of twoo so much because of all the whimsical magic fairytale vibe. But twoo had so much to offer and no one really acknowledges it. And a lot of the time when they do acknowledg it httyd creeps it's way into the conversation. I think twoo was a beautiful book but it's so underrated it's honestly wild to me.

overall: i liked the first half better than the second half. first 50% was soooo addicting. i loved the world building and dragons and war college and challenges so much but i’m just not a huge romance person. like the romantic buildup is amazing but afterwards i’m just meh. of course there was the expected tropey/ cliche/ booktok moments BUT most of it was overshadowed by how great the other aspects of the writing was. i dissociated at the end and didn’t really feel attached to violet or xaden or even the dragons (this is a me problem) but i think the ending is great set up for book 2 (will probs give it a read). like u can tell where the book is going but then the author does something unique to make it a little different than other books in this genre, so idk how many surprises book 2 will have. the fact that i read this is in less than 24 hours says a lot though. i hope mira comes back :D

RIDERS OF BERK || THE SEASON FINALE | HTTYD SERIES | BREAKING DOWN HICCUP

Blog Post Title: Breaking Down Hiccup

Title: We are Family I & II

Ep/Season: Episodes 19 & 20, Season 1 (Riders of Berk)

Premise:

It's Bork week! The riders were tasked to do a Dragon Air show in conjunction w the festive week. The Nadders had a synchorinsed air glide, the Gronckles were gonna arrive in a steady formation and well, Hiccup started feeling a little left-out for Toothless who might need to do the show alone.

Newly entrusted w Bork's papers, i.e., the originals drafts making up the sacred Book of Dragons, he stumbles on a couple of sheets revealing the mysterious Isle of Night, an island filled with Night Furies.

Desperate to find Toothless a family of his own, Hiccup and gang sets out to look for the island, but stumbled into something else.

THEME & MESSAGE

PRESERVING GENERATIONS

The Vikings are a very proud people. Proud of their culture, background and ancestry. They all come from a long line of dragon killers. As far as we know it, no one apart from Hiccup has tried to make peace w the beast. And so, it is a huge deal that this year's Bork Week is celebrated along side the dragons instead of against them.

Bork the Bold is Gobber's great, great grandfather. He has inherited all his trinkets and keepsakes. The journey of collecting and collating the information found in the Book is discussed in Dreamworks Dragons' limited series Book of Dragons.

Maybe that's why Gobber is such a dragon expert himself. It runs in his blood.

Now, we know times have changed and the village has now accustomed themselves to having dragons around. As part of their daily life, culture and community.

That was the one of the main objectives of the Dragon Academy & the aim of the dragon riders. And they’ve done well in securing this new sense of life.

"Traditions' a fine thing Mildew, but things have changed. Better if you asked me...We've come a long way from the time when it was us or the dragons, you might be a little less crusty if you get used to that Mildew."

And if you think about it, how many senseless deaths had occasioned all these generations long because the vikings couldn't or weren't intuitive enough to understand dragons?

So, yes, things have changed for the better.

The council agrees that it is time for Bork's notes to be stored in the academy and placed under Hiccup's charge so that it can be utilised and improved upon. It is, to them, the right place for it now.

Being the nerd that he is, Hiccup spends the entire night sifting through old manuscripts and diaries till he stumbles upon notes on an island full of Night Furies.

FINDING TOOTHLESS A FAMILY

Lamenting earlier in the afternoon, wishing Toothless had a family to belong to, Hiccup was excited to get hold of these notes, embarking almost immediately on a journey to find Bork's cave and retrieve the exact location of the Isle of Night.

This journey was so funny. I mean, Snotlout is such a jerk to the Twins, but it counterbalances because the Twins couldn't care less about Snotlout. The entire scene when he was held hostage by the wild changewing is so unserious its funny.

This adventure was pretty remarkable. I mean, Bork sounds like a pretty elusive character. His cave is revealed by sunlight. It's perched on the side of a steep cliff. I know that I said, Hiccup is the first one we know of that rode dragons, but who knows, towards the end of his life, maybe Bork did as well, he just didn't record it? (This is just my theory. I'm not fully convinced but I do wonder.)

It's also amazing that this was the episode Hiccup discovers Toothless's echolocation.

Let's have an honourable mention for the Isle of Night's location carved into the topside of the cave. Aesthetically pleasing for an adventure this big. (I wouldn’t get too attached though, y’all know why).

This mission was also special. It wasn't a scouting mission, a rescue mission, a mission against the enemy. It was instigated to find Toothless a family. And everyone went with Hiccup. The Twins, Snotlout, Fishlegs and of course, Astrid.

This just goes to show, that inasmuch as they get on each others nerves, the five of them will always have each others back.

UNFORTUNATELY,

For those who watched the final instalment of the HTTYD franchise, The Hidden World, you would know that all Night Furies were hunted down nearly to extinction by this guy...

It was peculiar that the notes specified unruly and hostile behaviour of Night Furies in herds.

Yet, based on that information, Hiccup went alone to spare the others from danger.

The longer it took for any Night Furies to show-up, the more suspicious I was and, on my first time watching, I remember yelling "GET OUT IT’S A TRAP!"

This whole time, it was a ploy by Alvin and the Outcasts to kidnap Hiccup and force him into training their dragons.

MILDEW'S TREASON

I had an inkling that this old man had something to do with something. But I don't know why, when it was reveal that he had a hand in this, it surprised me. I knew he was a grumpy, horrid old sod, but I never expected him to be cunning.

AND, the most interesting part about this treason was how well it played out.

When Mildew was thrown in prison and it looked like Alvin had tricked him too, I thought it was genuine. Who knew it was a charade to get Hiccup to teach Mildew the tricks of the trade?

I mean, Mildew played two cards; (1) Hiccup’s knack for adventure; and (2) Hiccup’s forgiving disposition.

It’s like Mildew knew Hiccup was in search for other Night Furies for Toothless. And I wondered how he knew that was the case to be. Though, on hindsight, maybe he was just taking a swing at Hiccup’s innate desire for discovery.

He further played with Hiccup's sympathy and used it to gain his trust when “trying to escape.”

Though don’t you think it’s ironic, that Midlew is the one from Berk who ends up learning and training dragons on Outcast Island? Doesn’t this deserve an irony of all ironies stamp?

Whatever the case may be, the whole Mildew fiasco was dramatic to say the least:

HICCUP THE UNAFRAID

I don't think I have ever seen this boy flinch at danger or bad guys. He flinches when Astrid's mad at him (which is adorable), but not at Alvin, or anyone whose kidnapped him before. And he has been kidnapped many times.

He just walks through the prison barracks as if its nothing. He is the perfect example of never judge a book by its cover.

We think, from the 1st Movie, that Hiccup is a coward. But no, he is a different kind of fighter. And a testament to his own father, Stoick who is also brave and unflinching when it comes to danger UNLESS the danger befalls someone they care about.

He is more Stoick’s son than meets the eye. And just because he doesn’t look large and compelling doesn’t mean he isn’t.

This adds to what I've been talking about this whole time, that courage, perseverance and leadership takes many different forms. And Hiccup is in a state of his own.

THE RIDERS OF BERK

And in line with our topic on "things aren't as they always seem," it took Hiccup two episodes to realise that Toothless had found his family… in him.

Family doesn’t need to fit the conventional standard of blood relatives or similar species. It can occasion from bonds of brotherhood, friendship and care. The question is, whether you are there for each other no matter what. And the answer to that is, definitely!

This little family is completed w a blonde, warrior Princess and her Deadly Nadder. An arrogant yet loveable (sometimes) dweeb and his Monstrous Nightmare. A tough an tender dragon knowledge geek & his Gronckle. And a pair of eccentric twins on their Zippleback.

RIDERS OF BERK ended w a final lesson - Defending the people you love.

The dragons carried out their mission to save Hiccup and Toothless in the absence of command.

They transitioned perfectly from simply just protecting their riders to actively fighting for them.

Moving on from being riders to defenders, #iykyk.

The whole season dealt w lessons for the dragons and it’s riders. Everyone had so much to learn about themselves and each other. And we get a lovely insight into the whole process.

PERSONAL TAKE & THANK YOUS

ROB lifts the curtain on the day-to-day lives of Berkians because it was a story on how these dragons were going to assimilate into their world.

What I never expected was, being able to find such nuggets of wisdom and character building when I took apart actions and consequences or responses a character had towards their circumstances and fit them into my life creating a moral lesson.

Dreamworks Dragons as a series gets more and more interesting. The adventure thickens. The stakes higher. The losses greater. The bad guys worser. But nothing compares to the heartwarming, soul enlightening, humble beginnings that ROB brings. It’s drenched in nostalgia.

One thing I missed when ROB ended was peeping through Hiccup & Stoick’s relationship for the first time, poking more into their time together. I really wish Stoick didn’t die. It was such a harsh death. I wish he could’ve lived to see his grandkids. He would’ve loved that. He was such a family man.

The story of hope, courage, and finding yourself flows in the veins of this first season of Dragons. It pays homage to the 1st Movie, which is still my favourite. In essence, it is about a boy, and his dragon and finding himself in between.

I have so much more to say, but that might turn this post into a book, so I’ll end by thanking everyone for the opportunity to share my thoughts on this show. My posts are long, and you guys take time to read it. That’s so precious to me, because who am I to be worthy of anyone’s time really?

I’m just an obsessed fan looking for her own voice in a show and I started this blog as a reflection diary not so much realising how strong and interactive the HTTYD community is and has survived. It’s closing in to 13 years since the 1st Movie. Yet it continues to touch, inspire and motivate many.

And isn’t it like life to imitate art. I feel like HTTYD Tumblr is it’s own strong Viking community. Every single encounter or interaction w a HTTYD fan has been delightful and encouraging. It’s like we own this little corner of the universe where a show is studied and enjoyed to oblivion and everyone gets why.

I also believe, especially because I’ve studied Hiccup a lot recently, that if he existed and was stationed here in the 21st century, our boy would definitely be on Tumblr. Wouldn’t he?

the classic: submit in matchup information + get paired with (a) romantic partner(s)! in return for the matchup information, you will receive: a 1x3 moodboard, one song + a hefty list of headcanons + a mix-and-match randomized trope explanation! (ex: a blurb about sharing a bed, first time meeting, fake dating confession scene ; ~100 words!)

the platonic machup: platonic matchups (my personal fave MWAHAHA)! you'll get paired with as many characters as you'd like<3!! in return for matchup information, you will receive: a 1x3 moodboard, one song + a hefty list of headcanons + incorrect quotes describing your dynamic between you and your found family/best bro<3

customized schedule: submit what your schedule looks like throughout any day of the week (up to two) + matchup information (platonic or romantic), you will receive: an hourly schedule on what life is like with said character i match you with + the aspects of your life with them! (ex: 8am, wake up by their side + they make you coffee blah blah blah), + a song for each moment of the day to describe your dynamic :D

MATCHUP INFORMATION:

name + preferred gender(s) to be paired with + preferred age group(s)

preferred fandom (up to two are okay, but please let me know which one you'd like me to focus on more!)

platonic and/or romantic + polycule preference etc + preferred age group!!

you can include your sexuality if you'd like to (only if you want me to touch on the aspect on how your matchup will support you because. yeah<3)
