Physical signs of your body telling you "no":
Bile in your throat
Panic
freeze response aka frozen or paralyzed w fear
Heart paced real fast
Anxiety
Unsettled stomach/gut feeling
Head fuzzy
Head & chest feels tight
Face might scrunch up in disgust/disbelief/pain etc

Emotional signs that you are not safe:
Unsettling environment
Fawning aka "going with what they want" even if you don't feel good about it
Uncomfortable
Knowing the other person doesn't like it when you express things different from their own beliefs
Knowing if you spoke up you would be either mocked or downplayed or told you're being too sensitive
Being told you're "disrespectful" or "not allowed" to talk back or disagree in any way
Being told you're too chicken or being forced to feel dumb or stupid if you don't join in
Being openly mocked or talked about by the whole group
Expressing a concern and they get mad at you for being mad at them
You're always the one in the wrong even when you were the one being hurt
They use grandiose words and phrases to assert dominance
"walking on eggshells"
They continue to do the things you asked them to stop doing even after countless times asking them
They don't care about how you feel
They make no effort to acknowledge your feelings or acknowledge how their behavior is affecting you
They force you to participate in drugs/alcohol
They hold their power and good deeds they have done for you over your head and threaten to stop helping or support you or even take back what they have given you
They are physically aggressive/ violent
Rage
Rage during substance use
Touching you without asking
Downplaying anything you need as not important
What to do:
Take a deep breath
Take your time figuring it out
Remind yourself this isn't your fault
Stay focused on the behavior- because they WILL try to detract from it & turn it around on you
Gather your resources
Consider leaving or cutting contact
Consider therapy or online support groups to help yourself breathe and find safer spaces for yourself
Have an exit plan
Do not engage with the arguments & emotional bait
Cultivate your privacy
Cultivate your security
Cultivate yourself a safe space
Prepare yourself for the backlash
Ask someone safe to go with you
Call someone safe and ask them to stay on the phone with you if you do not feel safe
Self defense tools like pepper spray & brass knuckles
Know you're worth the exit
Take yourself seriously when they dont
Honor the gut feelings
Restore faith in your judgement
Honor your voice
Honor your body
Honor your "no"
Ask for a pause- "I need a break."
Ask for clarity- "Can you clarify that?"
Ask what their intentions are- "Are you being helpful or hurtful?"
Bring attention to the behavior and how it's making you feel- "I'm not comfortable with the way you're ignoring my concerns."
Make direct eye contact & deepen your voice- "You need to stop."
Do not apologize

Hope this helps!

How do you tell someone that you don’t wish to rp with them? I don’t want to seem like a jerk.
Ah, this all comes down to simply wording things that are true, but not particularly pointed. Here are a couple of my favorite ways to turn someone away without hurting their feelings. You can borrow them, or adapt them to your use-case! I know it can be kinda goofy to use a script, but hearing how other people approach it can help you develop your own voice for this kind of thing, so I’m happy to provide examples.
“I don’t think we’d really have chemistry, but good luck anyways!”
“I’m sorry, I’m not a big fan of your portrayal, but I’m sure you’ll find someone else!”
“I’m afraid you’re not quite what I’m looking for right now. Thanks for the offer!”
“I’m not really feeling this roleplay, but thank you anyways.”
“Your character isn’t really what I had in mind for my next RP, but I’m glad you took the time to ask!”
“I’m glad you offered, but I’m afraid this isn’t something I see working out.”
“We’re really different RPers, so I don’t want to lead you on with an RP I don’t think I’d be really involved in. Thank you though!”
“We seem to have very different goals in mind for RP, so I think we’d be better off playing with other people. Good luck!”
“I appreciate the thought, but I think I’m looking for something else right now. Thanks though!”
“I’m not sure I can see this working out, good luck elsewhere!”
“Sorry, it’s a good idea, just not for me! Hope you find someone else to take you up on it!”
“All the best, but this ain’t it chief. Good luck elsewhere.”
... look, okay, I’m very ‘nice’ but sometimes you just gotta whack ‘em with the, “Nah, not my kinda thing. You do you.”
Good luck with dealing with this! I know how hard it can be. If they push back on you saying no, be firm. “Hey sorry! I know you’re excited, but I already said no. I’d appreciate it if you’d respect that!” kinda vibe. Or “I’m not comfortable explaining further, but again, thank you for asking.”

I need the Tumblr version of Emily Post.
I have this cousin (well, cousin-in-law, she's married to my cousin) who without fail brings us an entire caramel cake every Thanksgiving, every Christmas, and sometimes an "emergency cake" like when my Dad died or Mom was in the hospital. (This is not homemade, she buys it from a local bakery)
This was fine when there were more of us, we were younger, and there was plenty of entertaining to be done over the holidays. But now with Dad gone, Mom is in assisted living (and with Type II diabetes), my sister lives in Florida with her partner, and frankly when it comes to my husband and I...caramel cake isn't our first dessert choice (or second, or third). This CIL does have three kids including two college-age boys who can probably plow through a whole cake like it was nothing, so maybe her idea of scale is off.
How do I tell this CIL that as much as we appreciate the care and the gesture, we would prefer NOT to try to figure out what to do with a whole-ass cake? The last one we divided into thirds, I sent one-third to my MIL, and we gave our third to the raccoons and opossums that come around our house.

How To Say No to Your Boss Politely
Saying “no” to your boss, manager, or supervisor can be daunting. When you accept a job, you commit to following the instructions of those in charge. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that saying “yes” to everything isn’t always the best option. There may come a time in your career when saying “no” is necessary to maintain the quality of your work or adhere to your ethical principles. The…

EVERY SINGLE DAY there are MILLIONS of characters in their late 20s who get falsely accused of being father figures to teenagers when in reality the description of "weird older cousin" or "step-sibling that moved out before you were born" is 1000000x more apt

It's honestly crazy that discussion around testosterone HRT skews so much towards the beginning stages of it (to the point that you have dozens of guys thinking their transition is "failed" if they don't pass by like a year in lol) and what the initial changes of the first couple of months to years look like, like the classic laundry list of those early basic changes like bottom growth, voice drop, etc, when IMO literally none of that compares remotely to the depth and intensity of the long term total masculinization you start to experience like 3-5+ years in.

Listen man, you guys can't be like "you guys need to be normal about asexuality" and then turn around and get weirdly judgemental when you find out someone doesn't have sex by choice. Like that's weird that some of you do that.

learning that self deprecation isnt cool and just makes the people around you uncomfortable unironically improved my mental health a lot. like if you just stop saying negative shit about yourself you will genuinely like yourself more and other people wont be repulsed by your attitude and you will have more friends. it's true.

imagine being someone at new rome university and not knowing percy is the same guy as “percy jackson, son of poseidon, two-time hero of olympus, former praetor” because the thought doesn’t even cross your mind. like… he’s percy. he’s a total frat boy. on a normal night, he walks into a party, refers to everyone as bro or dude, socializes with every living (and not-living) person in the room, makes at least 50 sarcastic comments, plays 12 rounds of beer pong, drinks way too much, and then skates around campus on his skateboard yelling “I LOVE NEW YORK” (which makes no sense, because they’re in california) until someone calls his girlfriend to come get him.
and then one day there’s an attack, and frat boy percy is all of a sudden a fighting machine. he’s yelling battle cries alongside the praetors frank zhang and hazel levesque as they lead everyone into battle. (why is he with the praetors? and why…. why in the world do the praetors seem to be following his lead?) his sword slashes through armies of monsters faster than you’ve ever seen. he’s controlling the entire river surrounding the camp, creating huge waves as tall as skyscrapers that crash down all around him, wiping out monsters and causing mass destruction to his enemies’ ranks. the sky is suddenly dark above you, ice-cold water droplets are slashing through the air, and the wind is blowing so aggressively that it’s making it hard to stand up steadily. because he’s somehow created a hurricane.
and he looks terrifying. you can feel the power radiating off of him. he’s like a god. or maybe a monster. it’s hard to tell. you’re a little scared of him, to be honest. but also in total awe, because it’s extraordinary. he’s extraordinary.
frat boy percy is not who you thought he was.

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.
you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.
you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.
don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.
if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.
you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:
how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!
aren't you happy yet?
