my cat fell in the bath once and absolutely stank for hours after. turns out wet cat smell is nothing as lovely as dry cat smell. anyway she's alive and healthy and not housing a human corpse, so imagine just how putrid the springtrap stench must be at this point

💕 I have a request!
Could I please have some heavy angst headcanons, behaviour-wise, for an emotionally devastated, completely withdrawn and deeply depressed Vincent Sinclair who sincerely believes that he's been rejected by someone he's fallen hopelessly in love with?
Heyyyy ~ Kelly!!!💖 This is a fun little one to write; you sent it in about a year ago but I've only just found the energy/inspiration so I hope it's still something you're wanting to read about! I was curled up in bed eating my weight in chocolate cake and watching House of Wax scenes as I wrote this, so I hope you enjoy! If this goes well, it'll serve as my comeback into the fandom.
Reader details: as always, "you", Y/N, gender neutral reader, no coded language.
TW; Vincent haaaaaates himself, depictions of child abuse (canon compliant), Vincent makes decisions for the both of you without discussing them with you beforehand, miscommunication trope my beloved, Vincent's behaviour and thought patterns are unhealthy, canon compliant depictions of violence, morally grey reader who knows about and passively participates in canon compliant events, angst, Vincent is emotionally constipated AND he genuinely believes you don't love him like he loves you, dehumanisation of nameless and faceless people who come into Ambrose (canon compliant).
This is an angst fest and does not have a happy ending.
Word count: 1, 487.
Tumblr media
Of all the people who had passed through Ambrose (and never made it out), no one had gotten under Vincent's skin quite like you had.
The people who came into Ambrose were either canvases for Vincent or a fun day for Bo. Even rarer were the ones destined for Lester, if only because he didn't partake in the family business as often as the twins did.
The ones destined for Lester always ended up in literal pieces in the roadkill pit, with many an animal thrown atop the human chunks for good measure. Very few entered Ambrose, but even fewer got to leave.
Vincent was never anything more than delighted, thrilled when he hunted, killed and then prepared his artform... and no one had ever gotten under Vincent's skin.
Not until you, and no one but you.
Of all the people who came into Ambrose, none of them had ever been perfect before Vincent had started his work on them. He immortalised the beautiful and romanticised the ugly.
No one but you, and he found himself wanting to keep you perserved while you were still alive.
It totally threw him for a loop and if Bo had been able to listen in on Vincent's thoughts, as he so often claimed he could, then it would have thrown Bo for a loop too.
Your very existence took Vincent by surprise and just like how Vincent always deals with the unknown, he totally shut himself down from you. He put in a word for you with Bo to tell him in no uncertain terms that you were not to be harmed in any way, but that was the extent of his involvement with you.
Vincent's act of shutting himself down from you was one-sided but it caused enough pain for two people.
As far as you knew, Vincent wasn't treating you any differently. He was very rarely around you but he was barely around anyone except Bo. So you thought little of it.
Lester did think something about it, but a sharp look from Bo would silence the youngest Sinclair, and so Vincent was blissfully, agonisingly, left to his own torturous devices.
It wasn't that Vincent had fallen in love with you at first sight - such a concept seemed terribly unrealistic, especially for him - but he had known from the moment he had laid his eye on you that there was going to be something between you.
And just his parents had done to him before he had been old enough to take his first shit, Vincent wrote himself off.
His attraction to you turned to intrigue, which turned to yearning and then desire and then red hot want which would have rendered him speechless if he had been able to speak.
Vincent had initially made himself put in a good word for you with Bo, to help you stay in Ambrose with your life intact. But then as time progressed, he found himself putting your favourite snacks down on Lester's grocery list, convincing Bo to let you go with Lester, making sure you had the thickest blanket he could find because Ambrose could become cold at night... on and on the gestures went, but you seemed not to reciprocate them.
In truth, it was because Vincent was unreadable to you. As days turned to weeks which stretched to months, you formed cautious bonds with Bo and Lester, but Vincent remained unreachable to you. He was kind to you, but he was also totally withdrawn from you. You couldn't read him, you couldn't tell what was going on behind that mask, he was just... a wall.
You tried to express a rather twisted sense of gratitude for basic necessities but whenever you thanked him, Vincent would nod in such a way that it felt like your thanks was just an annoyance to him. His kind actions combined with the coldness of how he treated you after the fact, confused you, and you found yourself keeping away from him as best as you could, your heart aching. How could you properly thank him if he didn't let you? It was like he was only being kind to you to keep you quiet, to keep you where you were. Vincent was giving you emotional whiplash and you didn't know what to do about it.
There was more to Vincent than he was showing you and you knew it, but he was silent, he loomed over everyone in any room he was in, and he was truly intimidating.
It served to keep you away, which was what Vincent wanted, but it also caused him pain, because he longed to be close to you. Before Vincent knew it, he had fallen hopelessly in love with you. Once upon a time, he had been the Golden Child, the favourite of the three Sinclair children. He had been expected to die soon after being separated from Bo, but he had lived, and out of guilt had Trudy and Victor practically smothered Vincent in love, much to his developmental detriment.
They hadn't loved him for him, they had 'loved' him to alleviate their own guilt, and it had fucked Vincent up as badly as their abuse and neglect had fucked up Bo and Lester.
And so it was that Vincent was outwardly cold to you, or, at the very least, seeing to be totally unaffected by your presence in Ambrosde, and yet when you weren't there, it seemed that everything he did was for you, to make your life easier in a world you should never have known existed.
A world in which the dead remained so, encased in their own tombs, and and the living were haunted by the ghosts of themselves and all they never got the chance to be.
Vincent had closed himself off to you, rejecting the idea of you ever loving him before he ever gave you the chance to even consider such a thing, and as such, you inadvertently closed yourself off to him, too.
Your every attempt to thank him was rebuked, your every want to appreciate him left ignored, your every attempt to even minutely bond with him the way that you were slowly bonding with Bo and Lester was ignored...
Vincent never gave you a chance, he condemned the possibility of you loving him before such an experience could bloom within your mind, and in doing so, he practically shot himself in the foot. He was condemning you just like his parents had condemned him before he had even taken his first breath after being separated from the back of Bo's head.
He fell into a depression worse than anything his brothers had ever seen, to the point that even his artwork, his momma's legacy, was suffering for it.
To an untrained eye, all was fine with his figurines. They came out perfectly, not a hair out of place.
But to Bo and to Lester, they could see flaws Vincent usually poured himself into trying to fix. They could see hairs stitched back into the waxed scalp half a centimetre out from where it should have been, they could see raised patches through the clothing restitched onto the victim once the wax had cooled, they saw Vincent spiralling so badly that he ended up committing novice mistakes his mother had beat out of him decades ago.
And it was because of you.
Or, it was because of Vincent's assumptions about you, made due to his self-loathing which he had never questioned. He could romanticise the ugliest of gestures, the most grotesque of crimes, but he couldn't extend that same 'courtesy' to himself and it always saddened Lester and angered Bo.
Vincent didn't blame you for anything. He blamed himself. He withdrew from his brothers, he neglected his art, he shut Jonesy out of his workshop instead of letting her sleep on the mattress he kept down there for times when Morpheus called his name so sweetly that Vincent couldn't resist long enough to get back up to the house before Morpheus' sand got in his eyes...
And it stayed that way.
Vincent remained hopelessly in love with you, he kept himself away from you, believing with everything he was that you would never, could never, love him, and so to spare himself the heartbreak, he broke it himself more thoroughly than you ever could have done (not that you would, but Vincent had kept himself away from you so well that you would never think to yourself that there was more compatability between the two of you than either of you knew).
You pined, you ached, to know and to love Vincent, but he had made that decision for you, he had taken the choice away from you, and now the both of you were profoundly suffering and there was nothing anyone could do about it.
In time, maybe one of them would do Vincent a solid kindness and break the ice between the two of you. But why would they, when this was so much more entertaining?

For parasitic extraction: could you please expand on 'every single mandalorian character’s Massive Issues including how Intensely Abnormal jango is about obi-wan in particular' 👀
yeah let's just go down the list and name a few
jango's obsession with obi-wan is basically what's allowed this entire plot to happen because all this could have been avoided if he would just kill obi-wan instead of trying to make clones of him in a weird fucked up power play. he hates obi-wan so much it's become like 70% of his personality but obi-wan is so intricately connected to his own sense of worth as an emperor that he can't give up on trying to break him. he is pretty much the epitome of "he wants to fuck obi-wan so bad it makes him stupid"
cody and rex are both fucked up because jango pretty much disowned them after they let a jedi go because they didn't want to kill a child. cody has the worst hatelationship a person can have with their dad and still trying to be a good soldier so he can regain the affection from jango that he never had in the first place. on the other side rex has a huge complex about being a clone and how he needs to be better than them, and also he's traumatized by that one time he had to kill anakin
ahsoka is a mandalorian jedi who blames the rebellion and the jedi for imperial forces slaughtering her entire family. she has absolutely no healthy coping mechanisms for anything except murder until she meets an obi-clone
padme is fucked up about jedi, mandalorian or otherwise, because of that one time anakin drank too much dark juice and started killing his own teammates, resulting in her losing an arm and a leg
anakin was a mandalorian jedi up until his obsession with padme led to him going off the rails and murdering a bunch of people and rex having to put him down
bo-katan is trying to plot a coup of the empire because she and her buddies are mad about jaster (and jango) strengthening the mandalorian middle class instead of keeping all the power with nobility. satine is also stuck in this assassination plot but also she decides to be sweet on her obi-clone because he's cute as well as a status symbol which is extremely uncomfortable for everyone involved
dooku, mandalorian jedi, is retired from active duty and doing intelligence work and drowning himself in old jedi texts because he never got over that time maul killed qui-gon
cin drallig is a disabled mandalorian jedi who ends up being sent to kamino to train the clones and has so little social support and is so depressed that the obi-clone hive mind accidentally absorbs him in an attempt to make him feel better (which, to be fair, it does) so he's been mind controlled by 2000 children for like six years
myles is probably the least fucked up mandalorian who gets focus in this story, and he's plotting to assassinate jango because he watched jango torture an obi-clone in front of obi-wan and was like holy shit this is going a little too far.
what I'm trying to say is that mandalorian mental health services are not very good
ask me a question about parasitic extraction, the role reversal mandalorian empire au that I have

My Kenjaku ranking:
The Brain™
Kaorijaku
Kamo Noritoshi Sr
EdoKen
Geto
The OG will always be my #1. That juicy brain is what makes the following vessels so charming after all. There's a lot of speculation about what Kenjaku's original body looked like and while it's a fun thing to play around with, ultimately I don't really care. They could've looked like Gollum and I'd be fine with it because it's their brain that makes them so interesting and fun and I know that will always come through no matter the outer appearance. Also...they just look cute with that grinning mouth.
For a while I wasn't sure where I should put Kaori, but settled on #2 after the reveal that Kenjaku still holds on to her technique. It turned out to be the key to reaching Tengen and got them further in their plan than ever before. I really want to know Kenjaku's deeper reasons for keeping her CT. Sure, it's useful, but so would be many other CT's of the bodies they possessed the last 15 years, I assume. Just interesting to think about. The whole Itadori family drama is so fascinating too and I really want to know more about them. So far we have only seen one panel of Kenjaku back then but it's so impactful. You can immediately tell they're bad news (and slightly unhinged). Putting the gaslighting in the girlboss. Just imagining that Kenjaku was in a more or less stable relationship for at least 9 months…had to put up with a hateful father-in-law…and somehow wrapped Jin around their finger. There is a whole side of them we haven't seen before (and also a lot of domestic horror).
Speaking of horror, the Death Painting experiment is the most vile thing Kenjaku has ever done as far as we know (maybe you could also count the infanticide, but that at least went fast and didn't involve torture) and I would really like to see a flashback to get a better understanding of it. The way Choso recounts that time and Kamojaku is very different from how Kenjaku acts when confronted with it (casually dismissing it). Obviously, he's one of the victims after all. Would be great if we actually saw Kenjaku talk and act in Noritoshi's body. And I also want more information on the Mother and her relationship with Kenjaku and what she thinks of the children she was forced to carry. We've only gotten Choso's perspective so far and a little bit about how Kenjaku thinks of the experiment years later, but nothing about what happened during it. All the horror associated with it and the Kamo Clan in general is so interesting and could tell us a lot about jujutsu society, sorcerers and curses as a whole.
If this was just about looks, I would put EdoKen at number 1. However, compared to the substance and background of the other two, I felt I should place them lower. Nonetheless, what I like the most about this one is that they're the most "Kenjaku" Kenjaku we've seen so far, besides their brain. We have no idea who the original owner of that body was, not even if they were a sorcerer or not, just that their body isn't fit for combat and they have nice hair. That allows Kenjaku to stand on their own and tells us a lot about their character. Someone focused more on manipulation than physical force, who travels the world looking for people to use in their schemes. The androgynous appearance with masculine clothing and feminine hairstyle is very fitting too.
Geto is last. For one, I just don't like him and while Kenjaku looks quite different from him most of the time, it's still annoying, especially when Gege insists on putting Kenjaku in Geto's robes for no reason at all. If Kenjaku was allowed more often to wear their own clothes and we got less Gojo whining about poor Geto loosing his body, I probably wouldn't have much of a problem with it. I just think there is so much more interesting stuff about Kenjaku than them possessing Geto. It's also the vessel we've seen the most of and I'm getting a bit bored of it. Doesn't help that a majority of the fandom treat their appearance in Geto's body as their default when the other vessels have much more history. What I do like about this vessel is Cursed Spirit Manipulation. It's what lets Kenjaku take Tengen from her yonic tree, swallow her and later have a merger-curse-baby with her after all. And we got Uzumaki Mahito, one of my favourite designs in the series. So thanks for that :)
In conclusion, I just want to see more vessels and more of Kenjaku in the past.

Freebie for Me
Well, sweethearts... I never expected to do a part 2 of Freebie but... here it is! Freebie was the first fic of mine that has done so well ever! It was meant to be a one-shot but the enthusiasm for it surprised me that I had to continue after inspiration hit me. So here it is! I wanted to take the fic in too many ways so I apologize if it reads messy.
Enjoy, or don't. 👀
Warning: mutual masturbation, voyeurism, kinkshaming, pet names, compromising pictures (of reader), praising, my bad writing and weird sentence structure, reader is a creep and Bo is too, absolutely nonsensical, no penis × hole action because I do not know how to write actual sex scenes but the fic is spicy, Ooc Bo, NOT PROOFREAD (LV. Lemon)
Gn!reader with no physical description as always
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Everything has pretty much gone back to normal after Bo's and yours little interaction. Something that might have implied something else withered and died with a sad wheeze. He has been putting you through the wringer these past weeks; from housework, to corpse clean up and then helping him fix the most dilapidated houses of Ambrose under the scorching sun.
Your body was begging for mercy and a break for hours.
Hoping that Bo would show even the tiniest bit of consideration towards you. Ironic considering he barely had that for his brothers and between them and Jonesy, you were at the bottom of his priorities.
That's Bo for you, the bitter thoughts resonated in your head, you weren't special before and you weren't special today so suck it up. Didn't mean it doesn't sting a bit.
However, what did you expect? Bo made his disinterest quite clear. You were just a toy to play with and tease whenever he felt bored, a little distraction. He genuinely found it entertaining to mess with you and you couldn't blame him, you allowed him to. Sadly enough, his teasing didn't involve being intimate with you to any capacity but you'll take what you can.
Dogs will beg for any scraps, no matter how bad they are after all.
You didn't have any dignity to begin with and you for certain weren't a Saint deserving of his sympathy. The things you've done before saying much of your character.
It appeared your torture wasn't done yet because now you're back to reality after briefly escaping through your thoughts. Your eyes drifted up as you wordlessly handed Bo more nails for him to hammer down on the window he was currently fixing. His coveralls were pulled down and the sleeves tightly wrapped against his waist, showing the white shirt he was wearing underneath. The sweat made it so that the fabric clung to his body and showed every muscle straining against it. Whenever he stretched, a bit of his tummy and happy trail could be seen as well.
Heat spread across your neck and below your stomach.
Such a little thing shouldn't get you as hot and bothered as it did, considering you quite literally own pictures of him naked.
The snapping of his fingers took you out of your daydreams once again.
"Hey, you've been slacking here. Drifting off to God knows where. If you don't wanna help I'm making you help Vincent dispose of the bodies again and I heard ya didn't like it."
Even when angry, brows knitting in frustration, he looked too pretty for his own good.
"Sorry... I just," you paused, trying to come up with something "need a bathroom break..."
You shouldn't be doing this right now.
It was far too risky and there was a time and place for you to be shoving your hand in your pants. It felt so damn juvenile as well, getting so hot and bothered enough to masturbate in a ghost town, behind one of the many houses in Ambrose.
You groaned as you sped up, hearing the squelching too loud in your ears. You need to get this over with and get back quickly to Bo before he suspects anything. You don't think he'd let you live on if he found out you were doing this, he'd probably laugh as well and tell Vincent and Lester about it.
You already had the creep and freak label plastered on by them. You didn't need a third one to drag their point across even more. Not like they had the right to anything as they were creeps and freaks themselves. They were hypocrites too.
Your eyes rolled back the closer you got. This would feel better if it was Bo's hand instead...
Or his mouth.
Or his co-...
"Well, aren't you disgusting? Seriously, out in the open?"
With how quickly you twisted your neck, you felt something crack. Wide eyes stared directly at cerulean ones. There stood Bo, with his arms crossed against his chest as a sneer made it's way on his handsome face, dark brow raising.
"B-Bo... I-... how did-..!"
"This is my town, hun. I can enter whenever, wherever and however I so damn please." He didn't give room for questioning but it felt he wanted you to oppose him. His disappointment was visible when you remained quiet and averted your gaze. He scoffed as he got closer, it seemed he wasn't done with playing with you yet.
He never was.
Bo would never admit this in a million years but he really loved teasing you. He has never met someone as confusing as you. Acting all shy and aloof, unaware of your depraved actions all together no matter how many times he had made you admit of your wrongdoings, and not changing your ways.
It made his head spin, almost like being drunk but without the threat of a hangover. He fought the urge to take things too far but seeing how much you've tolerated his advances he wondered how much he could push. Bo didn't have much self-control nor was he the type of guy to fight his indulgences for too long. So he bit.
"Go on, don't let me stop you."
You blinked.
"What?"
"Are you deaf? I told you to keep touching yourself. You were desperate enough to crank one out in a place where anyone could find you. So get to it."
His hand took hold of your shoulder and with a gentleness you weren't used to, pushed you down to kneel.
"That's better," his voice barely a whisper, eyes half-lidded as a small smile grazed his lips "You're being so obedient, hun. Always are..."
His hand rose up to press his palm against the side of your neck, slowly sliding up to lay on your cheek. His calloused thumb rubbing soft circles under your eye.
You shivered, wanted this more than anything. To be taken in with such fondness. You closed your eyes and leaned into his touch, wanting to feel him, be closer to him. You rose your hand to hold him and press him closer but-
"Hands to yourself. You don't deserve to touch me seeing how much of a pervert you are. Still need to teach you some manners after all."
Oddly enough, his words held no venom behind it.
As quick as his warmth grazed your skin, it went away making you yearn for more.
It seemed being trapped between the wall and Bo is a reoccurring thing as you were currently in that same position. Your back pressed against the wall and between Bo's legs, one of his hands pressed against the wall while the other tugged at his underwear. Despite trying to act cool and collected, the way his fingers trembled with excitement gave him away.
It made you feel good to know you affected him like that. Tables turned and all.
Bo had ordered you to pull both your pants and underwear all the way down to your thighs as he loomed over you, his coveralls pushed even lower and shirt hiked up. He had pulled his boxers down as well, making it so that his member sprung free out of its confines.
Your eyes crossed in complete awe, you have been complaining hours ago about never getting any further with Bo. Now, here you were, with his imposing frame trapping you and his full attention towards you.
You hoped it wasn't a dream.
Please, don't let it be a dream.
Soon enough both of you got to work, Bo providing you with a perfect view. You just had to admire him. His chest rising up and down with every stuttered breath he took, hair sticking to his forehead and neck, lips parted and eyes closed in concentration. You never noticed how long and dark his eyelashes were or the little creases next to his eyes. The soft blush was also delightful to see, you wished you could frame this moment forever.
Before you could stop yourself, the words poured out.
"God... you're beautiful."
Bo faltered and opened his eyes, neck craning down as nervous laugh emitted from his throat. The sound unfamiliar for both of you but he recovered quickly.
"Y-you gonna worship me or something?"
"If you would like that..."
"Fuck..."
Bo shook his head, deciding to ignore you as you increased his pace, large hand stroking the soft skin of his dick. You were so odd but it was frustratingly endearing for him at times.
"Getting there..."
"Bo..."
"N-no, like I said... no touching, not even to help. Only me and besides... instead of properly fucking you..."
He got closer till his penis was straight on your face. He widened his stance, legs parting and slightly bending his knees, hus hand furiously pumping his dick as pre-cum coated his hand. Giving a final tug, his hips shook as he came, body trembling at the orgasm.
"This," he hissed, "is much more fitting for you."
The warmth of his cum hit your face as it dripped down to dirty your shirt. You let out a pathetic and surprised whimper as you lifted your arms to prevent it from hitting your eye or hair to no avail. You couldn't help but to scowl and glare at Bo.
"Oops, my bad." He didn't sound apologetic whatsoever, even less with the shit eating grin plastered on.
You took a hold of your shirt to try and clean yourself up but Bo held your wrist.
"Ah ah, don't clean yourself up yet. Wait here."
He disappeared leaving you alone for a couple of minutes, nervousness rising the more the hours ticked by. You didn't even get the chance to finish. What a bastard. Your sulking was soon interrupted as you heard boots stomping closer. You felt a clump on your throat, what if it was Vincent? What would you do? You didn't want him to see you like this, you wouldn't know what to say to him but... a deep and depraved part of yourself kinda wished it was him.
It was Bo, and in his hands was a polaroid camera. He prepared it, closing it in on your face.
"Eyes on me, sweet pea."
The mess dripped off from your fingertips, and face, you didn't have time to react.
"Say cheese."
The flash of the polaroid camera disoriented you temporarily, blinking quickly to get your eyesight back.
Bo took the photo and carefully fanned it, eagerly waiting for the reveal.
"This one is going in the basement. Might be nice and show this to Vince and Les. Bet you would like that, huh?"
"Yes..."
"You're such a freak."

On 10th February 1567 Henry, Lord Darnley, husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, was murdered in Kirk O'Field
Early in the morning on 10th February 1567 Darnley, was found murdered. His body and that of his valet were discovered in the orchard of Kirk o’Field in Edinburgh, where they had been staying. The house had been torn apart by two large explosions in the middle of the night.
Darnley was undoubtedly the intended victim because two barrels of gunpowder had been placed in a small room underneath his sleeping quarters. He was dressed only in his nightshirt, which suggests he had fled in some haste from his bedchamber.
Upon further examination, the bodies had no signs of injuries that could be associated with the explosion, so the blast was not considered to have killed Darnley. It was determined that the two men were killed by either being  smothered strangulation, believed to have taken place after the explosion.
Some say Darnley’s death was at the hands of the Earl of Bothwell, whose subsequent marriage to Mary led to a state of civil war in Scotland. In my own view it wasn’t so cut and dry.
Although it is still a mystery, a number of arrests and subsequent executions took place, the first was almost certainly a miscarriage of justice. Captain William Blackadder, an associate of Bothwell, was e executed on 14th June 1567, although it was said he was only a bystander. Lord Herries wrote in 1656 that Blackadder rushed out of a tavern at the Tron on the Royal Mile at the sound of the explosion and was arrested.
He swore he was innocent before an assize made of Lennox men, tenants of Darnley's father, and was hanged, drawn and quartered, you might think this harsh, but Darnley, although estranged from Queen Mary, was still a King, of sorts and it was the normal punishment for treason.
In December 1567, John Hepburn of Boltoun (John of Bowtoun), John Hay heir apparent of Tallo, William Powrie and George Dalgleish, all servants of Bothwell, were put on trial. They were condemned to be hanged and quartered. The head of Dalgleish was  set on the Netherbow gate of Edinburgh.
William Powrie had made a statement in June, which describes how he and his companions carried the powder to the King's Lodging. He included the detail that as they were carrying the empty chests back up Blackfriar's Wynd, they saw the Queen and her party, "going before thame with lit torches."
In my opinion this version of events was pure fabrication, probably either said after being tortured, or just made up by those who held him. Do you really think Mary Queen of Scots would actually skulk around in the dead of night when she would have any number of servants to carry out the murders?
The French valet, Nicolas Hubert, called Paris, said that Bothwell came to the lodging with Mary, and making the excuse that he needed the toilet, took Paris aside and asked him for the keys. Paris explained that it was not his role to hold the keys. Bothwell told him of his plans. Paris was troubled by the conversation, and went to pace up and down in St Giles Kirk. Fearful of the conspiracy he considered taking ship at Leith. In his second interrogation Paris named Captain Blackadder, who had already been executed. Paris was executed on 16 August 1567.
One longstanding theory is the suggestion that the Earls of Morton and Moray were behind the murder, directing Bothwell's actions, to forward Moray's ambitions. These Earls made a denial of their involvement in their lifetime. The later and partisan Memoirs written by John Maxwell, Lord Herries in 1656, follow and develop this line of reasoning. Herries, after considering the arguments of previous writers, believed that Mary herself was innocent of involvement, and the two Earls arranged her marriage to Bothwell. This is the more likely scenario that I believe in.
James Douglas, Earl of Morton, was executed on 2nd June 1581 on the Maiden, a form of guillotine which he himself had imported from France.  After his execution, Morton's body was buried in an unmarked grave at Edinburgh's Greyfriars Kirkyard, and his head was displayed on a pike at the Netherbow as a warning to others.
The first pic is a contemporary  drawing of the murder scene at Kirk o' Field, it  includes at the top left the infant James VI sitting up in his cot praying: "Judge and avenge my cause, O Lord;" in the centre lie the rubble remains of the house; to the right Darnley and his servant lie dead in the orchard; below, the townspeople of Edinburgh gather round and four soldiers remove a body for burial. The artist was employed by Sir William Drury, Marshall of Berwick, who sent the sketch to England.
The sketch includes several cryptic elements. At first it appears to be an eye-witness account of the murder scene. However the infant James was not present, nor could he speak the words attributed to him at the time. Thus the image changes by its inclusion from an eye-witness account, to a propaganda poster, as an allegory. This same motto and a similar image of father and son was used on the banner of the rebel Confederate Lords, first displayed at Edinburgh Castle, then again at Carberry Hill.

Root Sasuke au 1
I have too many Sasuke aus.  I’m going to word vomit them all on tumblr and then make people ask me about them so I can finally have peace of mind.  so!
This one is pretty old.  After the massacre, Danzo scoops up Sasuke.  The official story is that he went braindead from Itachi mentally torturing him.  Danzo has his reasons for this.  Protecting Sasuke, both for his own safety and so that Itachi doesn’t fall out of line.  To remove Sasuke from the site of his family’s murders.  To ensure that he will be loyal.  The Third Hokage accepts the excuses and allows it because he is, frankly, a pushover.
Itachi, Koharu Utatane, Homura Mitokado, Shimura Danzo, and the Third Hokage are the only ones who know that Sasuke is actually alive.  He is raised in Root, gaining his Mangekyo Sharingan when he kills his partner.  He is put into ANBU as one of Danzo’s plants at a relatively young age.  I’m pretty sure it’s canonical that there is no small amount of Root agents in ANBU so those probably serve to cover for each other.  Any doubts about Sasuke are manuevered away by all Root agents who are probably involved in his fake backstory.
The elders do/say something suspicious or heck come clean out about it, but Tsunade finds out that the Uchiha Massacre was ordered by Konoha.  She gives Naruto & co a mission to bring Itachi back to the village.  They aren’t told the truth about Itachi, simply that they need to ensure he reads the scroll and comes back with them.  Naruto is unhappy with this, despite not even knowing at first that he was the Uchiha Massacre/genocide survivor.  Naruto has *trauma* from when Itachi showed up to kidnap him, as Sasuke wasn’t around to distract him for the half a minute it took for Jiraiya to come back from his date.
Itachi admits that he is sick and going mostly blind to Tsunade.  She works on healing him but most of the time he spends in a jail cell or interrogation as they decide what to do with them.  Once he’s cleared as loyal to the Leaf they move him to a hospital and decide that as long as he doesn’t go on super strenuous missions and gets loads of healing inbetween he can do SOME missions.  Except that he is going blind.  Which wouldn’t be so much of a problem if Itachi was trained to do missions n stuff blind but he’s not.  So it seems like Itachi is going to be retired forcibly.
Until he’s knocked out for a surgery and wakes up with perfect vision.  And the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.  Patient consent who?  Itachi assumes that Sasuke just tracked him down in the hospital and swapped their eyes, but why?  Why is Itachi still alive?  Tsunade is understandably upset that nobody got clearance from her before they played musical chairs with her patients eyeballs.  She can’t find out who gave the orders and it is extremely irritating.  She is promptly distracted when Itachi mentions that only close blood relatives can exchange Mangekyo Sharingan and can he please see his brother now?
And Tsunade yells at him because he killed his brother.  Itachi informs her that his brother is very much alive, thanks.  (there is a sinking feeling in his gut because maybe Danzo lied and he really did kill Sasuke but he couldn’t have he can’t live with that-)  Tsunade immediately remembers just how sketchy the elders are.  And Itachi tells her about Root.
After figuring all this stuff out they go to Root headquarters.  Tsunade grabs the nearest Root agent and demands they tell her where to find Sasuke Uchiha.
“Hokage-sama, that’s not going to work-” “Follow me.”
And they follow the Root agent, who is conveniently Sasuke Uchiha, into  Danzo's sick lab where he has all these Sharingan and Uchiha body parts and Itachi is like oh.  Oh no.
Frankly the original reason I had for Sasuke not immediately outing himself was contrived, so assume that Danzo set up some sort of contingency for him to follow or because of his seal.  Itachi grapples with denial and coming to terms that he caused his baby brother to be killed and then have his body desecrates in a lab and his body parts reused.
And Danzo is imprisoned where he eventually spills the beans that yeah Sasuke’s still alive and living under a fake name.  Itachi is so grateful for this, even though he never really planned to live that long and doesn’t really know how to go on.  Even though his brother has clearly being through so many terrible things in Root, brainwashed beyond belief.  And Sasuke is nothing like the kid he used to know.
guys please ask me questions about these aus im foaming at the mouth to talk about them.

What do the slashers really need..?
Just headcannons to describe the, seen from my perspective, perfect partner for the slashers.
Michael Myers
Tumblr media
⇛ Individuality.
Michael is a very interesting individual and he knows it. “Normal” people remind him of his victims. For example, the teenagers he kills are usually popular, have good grades and are overall pretty basic. To gain his attention you need to have something special about you, be it style, attitude or overall your opinions.
⇛ Comprehension
You don’t have to kill, he understands if you don’t want to but you have to see his point of view. Michael will never stop using murder and violence as a coping mechanism and if you can’t live with that.. you won’t survive.
⇛ Sharpness
While it’s not necessary in a relationship, Michael enjoys to feel challenged. He thinks very rational, quick and tactical and if you can keep up and maybe even surprise him, he’s going to be a lot more intrigued.
⇛ Maturity
Michael isn’t going to be there with you the whole time. He can’t take care of you or even protect you during a lot of days. He has to focus while he’s out and he can’t bother with worrying. You being able to take care of yourself will calm his nerves a lot.
Vincent Sinclair
Tumblr media
⇛ Empathy
Vincent has endured a lot in his life. He doesn’t want you to feel bad for him, but he wants someone to understand and to care.
⇛ Creativity
Vincent is creative when it comes to artsy things, we know that but you don’t necessarily have to be. Vincent values creativity but that can just mean that he values “out of the box“ thinking.
⇛ Tolerance
We’re talking about tolerance when it comes to his insecurities. I mean he’d love if you’re fine with him killing people, don’t get me wrong but the understanding of his insecurity is more important to him. It might help if you have some spots of your body you’re insecure about as well. It will remind him that he’s not alone with his struggles.
⇛ Confidence
This is not a necessity but Vincent is very insecure. If you’re confident he might idolize you and try to copy your attitude. It’d also help with Bo.
Bo Sinclair
Tumblr media
⇛ Confidence
Bo likes confident partners, he doesn’t know how to deal with insecurity and it also kind of reminds him of Vincent.
⇛ Serenity
Bo‘s thoughts are always racing. He plans their new murder, he worries and he simply pities his own existence. Sometimes the thoughts might get too much and then he needs someone who is calm and preserved and can piece him back together when he shatters.
⇛ Sass
Putting up with Bo can be exhausting and his snarky comments don’t make it better. If you take them too personally you might get hurt, so returning a sassy joke back every now and then can be quite useful.
Lester Sinclair
⇛ Peace
Lester is tired of dealing with his older brothers shit, sometimes he just wants to lay back and enjoy life without worrying about his loved ones’ lives.
⇛ Animal friendliness
Lester loves animals and if you don’t, or even like to harm them who knows, he is out.
⇛ Humor
Lester loves making people laugh, he isn’t too fond of seriousness.
⇛ Helpfulness
Lester likes to help people and not just to lure them into Ambrose. If he catches someone who might need a ride, a helping hand or anything else he happily complies. If you tend to be more egoistical, he’ll feel thrown back.
Baby Firefly
Tumblr media
⇛ Adventurousness
Baby loves trying new things especially if they’re dangerous. Her whole idea of a relationship involves doing fucked up shit together.
⇛ Cruelty
I guess this applies to the whole Firefly family. If you don’t like torturing or you can’t take it, chances are that you get ignored and killed.
⇛ Being extroverted?
Baby loves parties and while she gets it if you don’t, you shouldn’t be super introverted and never leave the house. She’ll quickly grow bored otherwise.
Otis Driftwood
Tumblr media
⇛ Intelligence
Otis may look like he can’t solve a simple equation but he’s really not stupid. His ideas and beliefs are thoroughly thought through. He spends a lot of time fantasizing, analyzing and imagining. He’d love to share his ideas with someone but only if he deems them, and their intelligence high enough.
⇛ Reliability
Otis will only start something serious if he trusts that person. He has to know that you won’t ditch him and his family.
⇛ Patience
Otis has never received romantic love. He doesn’t even know how to show it. He needs someone patient to wait until he learns and maybe even teach him.
⇛ Cruelty
Like I said, if you’re not okay with torture then you’ll die.
⇛ Sociability
Otis‘ number one will always be his family and you need to understand that. He will also make you family if he really cares about you. You will need to be able to live with the other Firefly's on a daily basis.
Billy Loomis
Tumblr media
⇛ Attentiveness
Billy is a big child and nobody changes my opinion on that. He just wants someone who listens to him, someone who’s able to comfort him.
⇛ Maturity
Billy is not the best person to be clingy with. He’s not always going to be able to be with you and if you whine about that, chances are that he’ll get annoyed.
Stu Macher
Tumblr media
⇛ Peace
Stu, while pretty playful, sometimes enjoys calm night, cuddles and a movie.
⇛ Childishness
Stu loves if you act a little more childish than others. Want to jump into puddles and splash rain at each other? Stu is so up for that.
⇛ Positivity
Stu is an optimistic person most of the time. Negativity is something he tends to ignore.
Brahms Heelshire
Tumblr media
⇛ Maturity
Brahms is such a brat. He really needs someone who can scold him every now and then. Maybe also teach him about right and wrong, he doesn't seem to really know about that.
⇛ Attentiveness
God, Brahms needs so much attention.
⇛ Patience
This one speaks for itself, Brahms can get very annoying, needy and clingy. In those times patience is a very important trait to have.
Josef
Tumblr media
⇛ Maturity
Josef is an old man okay. He wants to settle down, go hiking and drink wine in his armchair.
⇛ Spontaneity
Everything Josef does, basically happens out of spontaneity. He wants to suddenly play hide and seek in the middle of the night, he wants to do crazy sudden adventures and without that he'll turn sad.
⇛ Patience
Josef is a virgin. And like forty years old. He is new to all that romance stuff so his partner has to teach him.
He also gets really excited sometimes and then patience is needed to endure his hyperactivity.
Thomas Hewitt
Tumblr media
⇛ Empathy
Same as Vincent, Tommy is very insecure and without understanding what he went through, a relationship won't work out.
⇛ Family person
Same as Otis. Family is very, very important to Thomas and he'd really like you to live with them.
He'd also want a family of his own eventually.
⇛ Hardworking personality
Not a necessity but Thomas would really enjoy it if his partner spent time with Luda while cleaning and cooking.
⇛ Insecurity
As much as I hate to say this, chances are that Thomas will get interested in you because of your own insecurities. I don't think he personally met a lot of people who felt the same as him before.

Nightmare.
(Well...it's my first scenario with the Sinclair brothers, hope you like it.:)
Warning: Character death mention, but overall, don't worry, it's just fluffy and sibling antics.]
You could never forget that scene and what it felt. The old wax museum of the woman you called Mom was on fire, everything was falling apart. all sides only made it difficult for your escape.
The hot wax that fell on your skin hurt, and it wasn't a small thing. When you realized the floor below you gave way and you fell from a height that wasn't enough to cause you serious damage, which was a miracle. of relief, you quickly get up to keep more of that hot wax from drop on you.
You get up, and notice that you were not alone, in front of you there were two bodies in the middle of a table covered in wax. Your stomach lurched as you recognized those faces, the same faces as those that have been your family, the twins you proudly called brothers. Now they were sprawled, one on top of the other, both are dead. Your chest tightens in anguish, confusion and sadness, you slowly approach, ignoring the chaos behind you, and put your hand to their faces. Bo was completely deformed in your face, on the same side where Vincent had his scars, they was covered in blood.
"No, please no,it can't be!!"
Your tears ran down your face like a hot waterfall. You curled up in front of your brothers' bodies and closing their eyes, you scream, something that came from deep in your lungs, a scream that mixed anger and anguish. that it wasn't real, you just wanted that torture to end, that wasn't how you wanted to see them one last time. Your eyes, embarrassed with tears, close, not wanting to see it anymore, you feel your body thrash involuntarily, and then crash into something hard.
It was the floor of your room...
"A n-nightmare...?"
Your mind tries to process what has just happened, as a sudden strong surge of adrenaline consumes your body, and you find yourself disentangling your sheets and staggering as you try to get up. You wanted to make sure it was just a bad dream, you wanted to make sure they were still alive.
When you opened the door, you found the twins coming up the stairs to your room. They heard the thump and your screams. Vincent even with the mask on,had the concern in his eyes evident, and Bo looked confused and so worried how much.
"What the hell is going on? What was that noise Y/n?"
Said Bo, finishing up the stairs and approaching you, Vincent came right after and started to signal a question.
>>Are you okay?What happened?<<
You couldn't hold back any longer, you were at your emotional edge, tears soon began to flow from your eyes again, Bo was ecstatic for a moment, and then began to run a hand over your shoulders gently as a failed attempt at comfort.
"Come on brat, what's wrong?" He continued, realizing that he might have sounded rather gruff with the question he had asked, bending down a bit to look into her eyes, he spoke again, this time sounding kinder. "That's what I said, wasn't it? Don't cry, I didn't want to make you sad!!"
He tries to be kind, but to be honest, he had no idea what to do when he saw you keep crying, Vincent rolls his one eye, and takes the initiative to hug you. The silent twin's embrace was warm, just what you needed right now, as you couldn't speak because of your uncontrollable sobs.
>>Nightmare.<<
Vincent signals to his twin as he sits with you on the stairs. Bo soon gets the message from him, and he also joins in the hug, at first it was kind of ankward, but soon he got involved in the heat of the moment. You're now a little calmer, loosen your grip on Vincent's sweater sleeves and wipe your tears on the sleeves of your own pajamas. They both take this as a sign that you've stopped crying, and both calmly release their embrace.
"Sorry...I woke up too scared...that was very real..."
>>Feel better?<<
"Yes...thank you guys..."
The three of you continue to sit on the stairs with Vincent rubbing your shoulder in comfort while Bo is still by your side this time holding your hand.
"So…you want to talk about it?"
You close your eyes for a second, and suddenly that same image that terrified you earlier appears in a quick flash. You shrug and open your eyes quickly before ducking your head, trying to get it out of your mind.
"No...not really...it was just scary and...nonsense."
You just take a deep breath as you feel the fear slowly slip away, Vincent was always good at physically comforting you, while Bo was usually the brother who gave you the most moral support through words, but today he seemed as lost as you. You couldn't blame him, he's never seen you so scared and broken like that, and seeing you like that made something paralyze on him.
"You know you can count on us don't you gremlin?"
You laugh at the way he calls you, as a kid, he called you that just to piss you off, which worked really well, but now, it was different, it even sounded like a pet name.
"I'm fine really, I just...I don't think it makes any sense for me to talk about it, as you once said: so I can be more down to earth and stop distracting myself with things in my head."
"This is quite different, but if you don't want to talk then that's fine."
He knew that just as you didn't do that to him, he didn't want to push your buttons.
"...Thank you bro.Actually thank you both."
You three stay there until someone else walks through the door. It was Lester who had just come home from work, as usual he was sweaty and stinking, but he still looked cheerful.
"Huh? Family reunion? Or were you guys just waiting for me?" Said Lester, smugly.
"Haha, welcome back." You said with a smile on your face.
"Well at least we have a good hostess in this house."
Bo sniffles and then puts her hand up to cover her nose.
"Ew, you stinky more than yesterday!" Bo said in a playful tone mocking Lester, making him laugh.
"This is my natural scent, by the way, how about a hug as a thank you for waiting for me?"
You and the twins quickly get up, ready to run to spare your nose.
That nightmare really rocked you, but you were glad it was just a bullshit in your head. What mattered most to you was what was going on at the moment, with the sheanigans of you and your brothers. That was quite a funny situation, and now you and your siblings were struggling to get away from your other brother's heated and smelly embrace.
When Lester managed to trap you first, you didn't even mind the unpleasant odor coming from him, as usual, just hugging him back.
"Shit, now there are two of them!! Said bo pretending to be scared.
"Let's get them bro!" You said.
"I'm right behind you."
And then you go on with your tag games, then Vincent letting himself be captured by you, and then the three of you going after Bo. It didn't take long for you guys to surround the eldest, and even though he was calling you three skunks or smelly raccoons, it was obvious he was having fun too.
You were glad everyone was there, having fun. You were relieved that was just a nightmare.

Haikyuu Boys Mafia AU....Pt.1?
Characters include: Timeskip!Bokuto, Akaashi, Kuroo, Kenma
TW: Blood, weapons, arson, murder, swearing, alcohol, drug use, drug dealing, harm, suicide, haikyuu manga spoilers!!
Bokuto Koutaro
This baby boy, is not so sweet. Not in this AU at least. He is relentless and fierce. Much more independent and brave, he enjoys going on missions by himself and he loves the satisfaction of coming home with a prize he earned all on his lonesome.
He keeps his hair down on missions so the police don’t see a weird-ass owl man on the run. It’s also a lot more practical. Bokuto is strong and has a large build, but he’s also flexible and agile. He enjoys roof-running and doing stunts mid-fight. He likes to play tough guy and pretend he’s in a movie.
Bokuto may seem like he doesn’t take the job seriously because of his constant  joking and teasing, but he is really dedicated and loyal to his godfather.
Bokuto definitely gives me Capo, or Caporegime vibes, so we’ll go with that as his mafia status. He will eventually go on hiatus, but he always returns to his “family”.  Bo enjoys the fancy side of the mafia as well. He enjoys the thrill of a hand off and a possible scam. Yumeko vibes???  He gets a kick out of dressing up in expensive suits and leather gloves, it makes him feel professional.
Akaashi Keiji
Him. He is so responsible and humble. Akaashi would definitely be the underboss, working alongside the boss or “Godfather”. Need a hitman? Hes ready to help. Need money? He’s on it. He will always be ready to help, work, serve, you name it. But when he is assigned a personal mission involving family matters??? Oh my. This boy is on a rampage.
He ignores everything else going on and hyper focuses on the task at hand. Boom. It’s done in a matter of days. He works impressively fast and efficiently, and he works well with other people as well even though he would much rather work on his own. He often keeps to himself only opening up to his godfather. He never mentions the mafia ever not even in joking conversation outside of work and he refuses to let just anyone into his mafia.
He as well enjoys dressing up in a suit and tie and looking very professional. He often wears gloves, glasses, and a pocketwatch is always seen with him. He works oldschool and calmly. There isn’t a single sticky situation he can’t get out of scratchless.
He obsesses over perfection and is always making sure his work is spotless and correct. No false accusations or murders. Akaashi really enjoys using knife torture as a way to get people to talk, however. He enjoys the satisfaction of hearing the loyalty leave the victims body and turn into betrayal with every slash to the leg/arm/torso wherever. He doesn’t enjoy the cleanup of blood. but he loves creating the mess.
Kuroo Tetsuro
This one is evil. He will chase a victim to the top of the roof just to make them jump off in the end. He enjoys the thrill of things and fast-paced work. Kuroo is not as reliable because he doesn’t take the job very seriously. He kinda just uses it for the money and legal protection. He doesn’t like dressing up as much because “It’s too much work”.
When he works in a group, he keeps to himself, annoying his co-workers. He just hates sharing information he found, only for the credit to be taken from him. He isn’t really into “fairness” so taking that into consideration, he is quite dangerous. He found out he was satisfied by old-school guns when he was going through a junkyard and found a 1920′s revolver in a trash bin.
He, as well as Akaashi, work oldschool and quietly. Kuroo will forever be loyal, no matter how unprofessional he gets. This is appreciated by his godfather and he is very trusted in the family.
He appreciates the time in things. By that i mean he loves rushing through things to see the messy outcome.
Kenma Kozume
He loves the profit. The economy, the money flow. He usually manages trades and drug deals. He often organizes weapon distributions as well. He has at least 2 bodyguards on him everywhere he goes and they protect him when someone he tricked or ripped-off tries to attack him. He really likes business and keeping secrets. That’s why he leads a normal life and a life of crime. To be able to hide away the deeds he has done from the public.
He makes sure to personally know everyone he trades or sells to, and he is not a plug. He sells sophisticated drugs to important and sometimes even royal people. He never manages to get caught and when he does, he’ll be ready. He loves to see shiny new weapons come into his warehouse only to get bloody and tested.
Kenma uses leather gloves at all times and never fails to clean up his messes perfectly. He tests his weapons on real people, in real time. Same with his drugs. He makes sure they aren’t fake, or duds, and makes sure they are of the highest caliber.

On the Post-Marcos Unification Church’s Counterinsurgency Work in the Philippines
The Unification Church, also known as the Moonies, was a religious organization founded by Sun Myung Moon in South Korea in the mid-twentieth century. In the Philippines, the church was known for its work in community development, education, and religious activities. However, the church also played a role in supporting the efforts of the Philippine government and the CIA in counterinsurgency operations.
The role of the Unification Church in the training of Alsa Masa is a subject of controversy. Alsa Masa was known to have touted and loved the beloved CAUSA manual. It was called the Causa Manifesto by many. According to some reports, members of the Unification Church played a significant role in the training and organization of Alsa Masa through both their WACL and CAUSA affiliates in the Philippines. There were UC members, with Bo Hi Pak as their central figure, directly involved. This training and support included the development of their paramilitary tactics as well as ideological training.
Through its training and support, the church helped to shape the ideology and tactics of the group, and provided a spiritual and moral foundation for its efforts. The church's involvement in the development of Alsa Masa was part of a larger effort by conservative organizations to support anti-communist movements around the world and to counter the spread of leftist ideology in developing countries. Alsa Masa in particular took in a number of ex-NPA, and the efforts of the UC were to form a spiritual and moral grounding in these disenfranchised former revolutionaries that was in opposition to the dialectical materialist worldview and Marxism so that they would not return to the National Democratic revolution.
Some reports have even suggested that the Unification Church used their work with Alsa Masa to advance their own political and economic interests in the region, gaining protection and having “negative” enemies eliminated.
Despite the controversy surrounding the Unification Church's involvement with Alsa Masa, it is clear that the organization played a significant role in the development and training of the paramilitary group. Whether this involvement was for the benefit of the Philippine government's counterinsurgency efforts or for the advancement of the Unification Church's own interests remains a subject of debate.  The Professors World Peace Academy, also played a role in supporting the Philippine government's counterinsurgency efforts. The academy was an educational organization that aimed to promote peace and understanding between different cultures and religions, but it also provided support to the Philippine government in developing and implementing counterinsurgency tactics. These tactics have only been developed since, and provided the basis for today’s NTF-ELCAC (National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict) which has recklessly led countless tortured, imprisoned, and murdered. Alsa Masa, one organization among many vigilante organizations and paramilitary forces, is able to claim responsibility for thousands of dead alleged communists. The number of actual members of the Communist Party of the Philippines who were martyred in these efforts is expected to be quite low.
Fascism get ousted from the Philippines in 1986, with the departure of Marcos, but has only evolved, much with the help of the CIA, and its liaison and coordinating forces, such as the Unification Church organizations.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T (1953)
Theodore Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, remains best-known for his children’s books. The Cat in the Hat; Green Eggs and Ham; and Oh, the Places You’ll Go! are household names in English-language literature. Seuss’ bibliography overshadows his work in films, beginning with the adapted screenplay of his own book, The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (1943) – directed by George Pal as part of the Puppetoons series. During WWII, Seuss was heavily involved in propaganda films and the Private Snafu (1943-1946) military training films. After the war’s end, Seuss returned to writing children’s books, but also continued to write for movies. The Academy Award-winning animated short film Gerald McBoing-Boing (1950) benefitted from Seuss’ story work, and Seuss’ success there inspired him to write a screenplay for a live-action fantasy film. That screenplay – the unwieldy rough draft coming in at over 1,200 pages – was The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. The eventual movie, produced by Stanley Kramer (1960’s Inherit the Wind, 1961’s Judgment at Nuremberg) and directed by Roy Rowland (1945’s Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, 1956’s Meet Me in Las Vegas) for Columbia Pictures, would be Seuss’ only involvement in a non-documentary feature film.
Like many who speak English as their first language, Dr. Seuss’ books graced my early childhood. So integral to numerous children’s youth is Seuss that his whimsy, wordplay, and authorial stamps are easily recognizable. In that spirit, the cinematic record of live-action Seuss adaptations consists of the scatological Jim Carrey in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) and the visual nightmare that is Mike Myers as The Cat in the Hat (2003). Compared to the original works, both films are ungainly, casually cruel, and overcomplicated. Not promising company for Dr. T. But even taking into account the three animated feature adaptations of Seuss – Horton Hears a Who! (2008), The Lorax (2012), and The Grinch (2018) – and the fact that Columbia forced wholesale deletions from the rough draft script of Dr. T to achieve a feasible runtime, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is arguably the most faithful feature adaptation to Dr. Seuss’ authorial intent and signature aesthetic.
In other words, this is one of the strangest films you may ever encounter. No synopsis I could write in one paragraph will ever capture the film’s bizarreries.
Little Bart Collins (Tommy Rettig) is asleep during piano practice and his teacher, Dr. Terwilliker (Hans Conried), is furious. His overworked, widowed mother Heloise (Mary Healey) intuits Terwilliker’s unrealistic expectations (Terwilliker wants to teach the next Paderewski) towards Bart’s piano skills and inability to concentrate. Heloise also appears to be quietly eyeing the plumber August Zabladowski (Peter Lind Hayes) and his wrench. With the lesson done for the day, Bart falls asleep again. This time, he dreams that Terwilliker is now the leader of the Terwilliker Institute, a pianist supremacy mini-state which is built upon five hundred young pianist slave boys (hence, 5,000 fingers) forcibly playing Terwilliker’s latest compositions. His mother is Terwilliker’s unwilling, hypnotized assistant and plumber August Zabladowski (Hayes is essentially playing the same character, but in a different world) is Bart’s only ally around. Together, Bart and Mr. Zabladowski must evade the Institute’s guards as they attempt to undermine Terwilliker’s plans for his next concert.
In its final form, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is a muddled mess of a story. The analogues between Bart’s reality and his dreams are inconsistent, several would-be subplots never resolve (or at the very least develop beyond a basic idea), and the film’s initial lightness is subject to rapid mood swings that make this picture feel disjointed. Indeed, Seuss’ sprawling social commentary in his first draft – including allegories and themes of post-WWII totalitarianism, anti-communism, and atomic annihilation – is in tatters in this final product. The viewer will witness brief fragments of those ideas, remaining in this movie as the barest of hints of the contents of the original screenplay’s rough draft. Even now, Dr. T inspires psychiatric analyses and accusations that Bart’s relationship with his mother reveals signs of an Oedipal complex (to yours truly, the latter is too much of a reach). The grim nature of Terwilliker Institute renders Dr. T unsuitable for the youngest children. For older children and adults, try going into this movie without expectations of narrative logic and embrace the grotesque aspects that only Seuss could imagine.
If my attempts to describe this movie’s preposterousness through its narrative and screenwriting approach have failed, perhaps I can capture that for you by writing on its technical features.
youtube
For its sheer narrative inventiveness – inconsistencies, abrupt tonal shifts, nonsense, and Rowland’s uninspired direction aside – The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T is nevertheless an ambitious film, and Columbia bequeathed a hefty budget to match that ambition. Much of that budget went to the film’s visuals. This is an extravagantly-staged motion picture, as nothing could do Dr. Seuss’ illustrations justice without fully committing to his geometric impossibilities: skyward ladders and improbable connections between rooms, an eschewal of right angles and straight lines, and architecture bound to raise the ire of physics teachers. One could compare this to German Expressionism, but Dr. T’s sets tend not to dictate the film’s mood nor are they subject to high-contrast lighting. Seuss went uncredited as the concept artist on Dr. T, and it was up to Clem Beauchamp (1935’s The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, 1952’s High Noon) and the uncredited matte artists to commit those visuals to the real world. Outside of animated film, Beauchamp and the matte artists succeed in creating twisted sets that seem to leap off the pages of Seuss’ most artistically interesting books. Some of the sets appear too stagebound, but the production design accomplishes its need to resemble a world borne from a fever dream (or, at least, a young pianist’s nightmare).
This movie’s outrageous costume design (other than Jean Louis’ gowns for Mary Healey, the costume designer/s for this film are uncredited) comprises absurd uniforms and two of the most ludicrous hats – the “happy fingers” cap (see photo at the top of this write-up) and whatever the hell Terwilliker dons in the film’s climax – one might ever see in a film. Most of the costumes are laughably impractical and ridiculous to even those without fashion sense. In what might be the tamest example, while working under Terwilliker, Bart’s mother wears a suit that is all business formal on the left-hand side and bare-shouldered, sleeveless, and nightclub-y on the right. The delineation of real life – which barely features in the film’s eighty-nine minutes – and this world of Bart’s dreams could not be any more unambiguous thanks to the combination of the production and costume design work.
The disappointing musical score by Fredrich Hollaender (1930’s The Blue Angel, 1948’s A Foreign Affair) and song lyrics by Seuss rarely connects to the larger narrative unfolding. Seven songs make the final print, with nine (yikes!) Hollaender-Seuss songs ending up on the cutting room floor. Seuss’ wordplay is evident, as are Hollaender’s melodic flourishes. Columbia, a studio not known for its musicals, assembled a 98-piece orchestra – the largest musical ensemble to work on a Columbia film at the time – for The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T alone. That lush sound is apparent throughout for the numerous nonsense songs that color the score in addition to the incidental score. It is unusual to listen to a collection of novelty songs orchestrated so fully. Listen to “Dressing Song: Do-Mi-Do Duds” and its complicated, seeming unsingable lines:
Come on and dress me, dress me, dress me In my peek-a-boo blouse With the lovely inner lining made of Chesapeake mouse! I want my polka-dotted dickie with the crinoline fringe For I'm going doe-me-doe-ing on a doe-me-doe binge!
The rich orchestration seems to hail from a more lavish film. But too many of these songs are scene-specific, and rarely does Hollaender utilize musical quotations from these songs into his score. “Get Together Weather” is delightful, but it seems so isolated from the rest of the film; elsewhere, “The Dungeon Song” exemplifies a macabre side to Seuss seldom appearing in his books. Nevertheless, Hollaender is able to demonstrate his playfulness across the entire film, none moreso during any scene with the bearded, roller-skating twins and the “Dungeon Ballet”, in which the music complements stunning choreography and fascinating props that recall the jingtinglers, floofloovers, tartookas, whohoopers, slooslunkas, and whowonkas from the Christmas television special How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966). Yet, Hollaender’s film score and the soundtrack with Seuss seems to demand something – anything – to tie the entire compositional effort together. Perhaps a song or some cue like that was cut from the film, which is ultimately to its detriment.
Hans Conried (who starred as Captain Hook in Disney’s Peter Pan several months prior to Dr. T’s release) stands out from a decidedly average Peter Lind Hayes and Mary Healey – Hayes and Healey, in a sort of in-joke, were married. Conried’s performance as the sadistic, torture- and imprisonment-happy music teacher can be considered camp, but this is anything but “bad” camp. He throws himself completely into this cartoonish role, sans shame, complete with mid-Atlantic accent, and topped off with exaggerated facial and physical acting that fits this fantasy. As Bart, child actor Tommy Rettig (best known as Jeff Miller on the CBS television series Lassie) seems more assured in his performance than most child performers his age during the 1950s. His fourth wall-breaking asides seem more appropriate in a Bugs Bunny cartoon, but Rettig makes it work, and inhabits Bart’s flaws wonderfully.
Columbia demanded numerous reworkings of Seuss’ script, leading to several reshoots – most notably the opening scene (Seuss opposed the conceit of Bart’s dream framing the film) – and a ballooning budget. Upon its release in the summer of 1953, The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T bombed at the box office and was assailed by critics. A crestfallen Seuss, who could not stand the production difficulties that beset the film from the start of shooting, would never work in feature films again. He would dedicate himself almost entirely to writing and illustrating children’s books, with many of his most popular titles (including The Cat in the Hat, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, and Green Eggs and Ham) published within a decade of Dr. T’s critical and commercial failure. His hesitance to participate in filmmaking informed his reluctance to allow Chuck Jones to adapt How the Grinch Stole Christmas! thirteen years later. Animation suited his books, Seuss thought, and he would never again pay any consideration to live-action filmmaking.
The reevaluation of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T has seen a rehabilitation of the film’s image in recent decades. Home media releases and television showings have introduced the film to viewers not influenced by the hyperbolic negativity of the film critics working in 1953. This is not a sterling example of Old Hollywood fantasy filmmaking, due to a heavily gutted screenplay, scattershot thematic development, and incongruent musical score. Yet, the movie’s surrealistic charms and Seussian chaos know no peers, even in the present day.
My rating: 7/10

My 2020 in K dramas (+1 J drama)
I began watching k-dramas in 2018 but I’ve never watched as many shows, Korean or otherwise, as I have in this one. 2020 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I think what helps me really enjoy this over Bollywood+Malayalam+ American pop culture I grew up with is that a smirk on the wrong character’s face doesn’t make me seethe with rage and want to burn everything down. It’s not like growing up with SRK on screen and then having SRK wannabes leave you with lifelong trauma in reality. I can just move on. It’s removed enough from my everyday life but still familiar in a generic Asian family way. Does that make sense? It’s not perfect and it’s not free of its own harmful stereotypes and narratives, but there’s enough of the good stuff to make you stick around. This year I fell in love with Nana, Kim Hye Soo, Han Yeri, Park Eun bin, Ahn Eun jin, Kim Bum, Kim Yong ji, Flower Boy’s Go Dok Mi and Search:WWW’s Bae Tami. Cancelled Ji Chang wook (bye). Desperately missed Kim Jae Wook. Had thoughts on Hwang In Yeop, which were mostly heart eyes. Discovered J dramas and fell in love with Cherry Magic’s Adachi.
My year-in-review below:
LOVED
Into The Ring - I am so glad I saved this for a rainy day because it’s exactly the kind of upright citizen shenanigans my unemployed ass needed at the end of the year.
Goo Se Ra thinks the govt should work for the people but that doesn’t mean her own moral compass always points north. Her purpose is to make steady money, and I love seeing her go hard to survive and cobble together what she needs. The thing that really works for me is that she wants to be good, but she isn’t always. And you get to see her be disappointed, upset, embarrassed and hurt from being publicly kicked in the gut as she navigates a job where she appears, on the surface, to be a supremely confident, self-serving, accidental politician. What you see as her naiveté is mostly just her being a regular person in an environment dictated by backhand deals and rich people politics. She gets hit again and again, and you see what it does to her sense of worth to get back up again, how she grapples with her self. And through all this the show is funny?! Se Ra is what writers of manic pixie characters think they are doing and not doing at all. Love her friends, and Jang Hye-jin is *chef’s kiss*!
Hyena - Kim Hye Soo’s Jung Geum Ja is perhaps Se Ra’s older and darker contemporary.  Geum Ja is a survivor and will get what she wants and where she wants to, however many hells she has to cross. She’s single-minded about her success, ruthless and has no qualms about bending morals to get the outcome she needs. She’ll never compromise on who she is or justify how she lives, can build people up and also tear them down, but she also knows care and kindness.
I turned to Signal for more Kim Hye Soo but was disappointed in how the first few episodes seemed to shortchange her. May try again in 2021.
(Highly recommend @saltr0se’s  fic series which just GETS Geum Ja so well. Fic writers are the best)
Search: WWW (Finished in 2020) - It took me half a year to finish this. I started watching Search in Oct 2019 and raced through the first 6 episodes because I couldn’t take my eyes off the rollercoaster of Bae Tami’s life. And then I had to take a break because it was a little too close to the frenetic pace of my own industry. As @drivingsideways wrote, a lot of Search is premised around ‘patriarchy? who dat?’, which is why watching its politics play out is so fascinating.  It’s also deliciously turmoil-y to watch a very clear-sighted, weathered Tami put on rose-tinted glasses for her romance and then frequently peer over them to evaluate whether it could actually meld into her life.
Catch The Ghost - Kim Seonho oozes charm and perhaps Startup was a showcase of how effectively he can be a typical male lead. But Catch is exactly not that. Go Jiseok and Yoo Ryeong have moulded their lives around to meet their most desperate wishes in life and in the process also left parts of themselves untended. There is guilt, pain and need. Now guess who will tend to whose wounds? Their dynamic is electric even when the central mystery flags towards the last few episodes of the show. I really hope Moon Geun Young is doing well and gets more amazing roles soon. She is so good here.
(Highly recommend @melonatures‘s fic for putting that sizzling on-screen chemistry into words. HOW?!) Cherry Magic - Stories about painfully awkward people are my jam and Eiji Akaso gets Adachi’s shy, nervy energy so right. Cherry Magic is straight up just 12 hours of 🥺🥺🥺.
Stranger/Secret Forest - I’ve been devouring the entirety of Agatha Christie’s work this year after Stranger reminded me how comforting murder mysteries can be. I love Bae Doona. I also love characters who don’t get social norms, not always because they are out to flout them but because that’s just not how their mind/brain works. (have to watch S2)
Flower Boy Next Door -  Honestly, the opening scene introducing Park Shin Hye’s character Go Deok Mi sold me on this immediately. An introverted, penny pinching copy editor living alone and working from home thanks to extreme social anxiety? Love. All the side characters are a lot of fun and I’ve never loved Kim Seulgi and Go Kyung Pyo more. It’s a warm show, slowly rounding off the sharp edges of every character.
JUST FUN
The Spies Who Loved Me -  It’s been a year of disappointing rom-coms and Spies kind of quietly turned it around for me. I want to be the fly on Yoo In Na’s wall as she figures how to play her characters. I’ve only seen her in 3 roles but somehow she always manages to be in character arcs that don’t short change her. Spies could’ve been and sometimes is the regular heterosexual fare, but In Na ups the ante over and over again, coming out on top as the smartest person in the room.
ENJOYED WITH *RESERVATIONS*
I have to watch A Piece Of Your Mind again because I don’t understand how Jung Hae In and Chae Soo bin built SO MUCH warmth and crackling chemistry with barely a kiss. I was iffy about how the whole AI thing started off and the tortured musician plotline (angsty male artists will forever be an eyeroll for me).
Park Min Young is a queen who never disappoints and When The Weather Is Nice is everything you want in a winter romance. My reservation was in how they explore so much of domestic abuse and the complex ways its traumatised the women in this family. I’m ok with the characters having imperfect ways of processing and understanding the violence, I welcome it. I’m not ok with the show dancing around whether the pivotal crime was justified/ self defence (it was).
A lot of dramas did this. I loved Han Yeri and Choo Ja Hyun in My Unfamiliar Family, I didn’t like the free pass the show gave their dad’s abusive character.
Hwang Jung Eum’s comedy style is generally not my thing but she was pretty great in Mystic Pop-UP Bar. But I’m side-eyeing the sanctity surrounding motherhood. Maybe I should read more about babies and Korean folklore.
Hospital Playlist was my comfort watch through June and July. I think its wholesomeness and non-plot writing came at a good time for me. But I noticed then that the throughline for all main characters was moral superiority and hence what I then saw as *wholesomeness*. It’s kind of what makes it a grating rewatch in parts. Plus the real life of misogyny of Yoo Yeon Seok makes me want to push his angelic catholic character off a cliff. (For context, i was raised catholic). I want to continue loving Chae Song Hwa, and for that the showrunners need to stop cornering her with overbearing romantic interests (let that woman breathe! she literally ran away to another city!)
Hospital is good at creating moments of comfort, so much so that I went to watch Reply 1988 after it, but had to drop it coz I couldn’t get into it. Maybe I’ll come back to it next year.
Once Again is what I call joint family propaganda. What it does well is lay bare the mechanics of living in a society that prizes the heterosexual family structure, the loops you have to jump through to hide when you break its rules and what happens when you are found out. I love the characters, their fights, their frustrations. I just don’t love the validation of joint families. (context: i grew up in an oppressive joint family lol). In my au, Nahee and Gyujin don’t get married again or immediately have children, but take the long route to figuring out how to love the person the other is. Gahee is openly dating Hyo shin and her parents have to figure out how to process her success and her romance. Young dal and Ok boon have to learn to stop dictating their children’s lives.  Joon sun runs his company from home, so his wife Hyun kyung can work on what she wants. Choyeon, Joori and Ga-yeon go back to being flamboyant AF and the market learns to not judge. Gyujin and Jaesok have to actually work on the relationship with their mother and what sent her into depression. Just a lot of learning involved.
Just Between Lovers was a nice watch, i just don’t get how Kang doo and Ha Moon So’s relationship will survive his constantly simmering anger.
Crash Landing on You was so much fun until the main romance turned angsty, but it gave us North Korean soldier shenanigans and the epic romance of Seo Dan and Alberto Gu that we needed more of.
Tale of The Nine Tailed is probably what Goblin wished it was. I, however, will never be over Lee Rang. (Also, when can gods stop meeting their love interests as babies? Asking for my sanity)
I literally ignored everything in Oh My Ghost except Park Bo Young and Kim Seulgi and it was amazing.
NOPE
Goblin, Dinner Mate, Oh My Baby and My Secret Romance were a whole lot of NO, NAHI, ILLAAA.
I loved hate-watching The King:Eternal Monarch with the rest of k drama tumblr but someone please take away Kim Eun-sook’s access to gigantic budgets and all-star casts.
It was painful to watch Do You Like Brahms squander away its potential but I’m glad to be introduced to Park Eun bin. Age of Youth is next on watchlist.
More than Friends to me is only Ahn Eun jin. Someone give her amazing lead roles asap.
Why did Record of Youth do that to Park So Dam and her clothes? Just why
WANTED TO WATCH, BUT COULDN’T BECAUSE *INTENSE*
World Of The Married, It’s Okay Not To Be Okay, Sweet Home, Extracurricular, Penthouse, Flower of Evil, Lie After Lie
WILL WATCH NEXT YEAR
SF8, Stove League, Birth Care Centre but I’ll start the new year with School Nurse Files coz it looks very good.

Can i request “hey i think i love you” for banri settsu? Thank you! 😊
I got some new reqs in the box so I just wanna say thank you first!! I hope I’ll be able to write more for this blog hehe- ah, and nonnie! Thank you for being patient!! I hope you enjoy! :D
He didn’t like this.
The drumming of his own heart;
The heat pooling at his cheeks;
The nauseous feeling settling in the pits of his stomach-
He didn’t like this at all.
There, standing at the gates of the school, was you. You, someone he’d gotten close to during all his years in school; someone who he often walked home with simply because, at first, the two of you would leave at almost the same time. As time went on and you found your place as part of the track team, he found himself subconsciously leaving at the hours your practice ended.
It was normal- familiar - this routine of yours, and whether he knew it or not, he didn’t want to break it. He found your presence pleasant, your chatter amusing and your attentiveness endearing.
But now – as he stared at the junior who had the balls to confess to you as you were waiting for him – Banri knew something was changing. Something would change. And the thought of it left a bitter taste in his mouth. He watched as you sheepishly accepted the letter, your laughter travelling across the courtyard as you talked to them before waving goodbye; all with a crimson flush to your cheeks.
Banri swallowed harshly, finding it hard to breathe all of a sudden and he gave himself a couple minutes so that he can regain his composure – and to not make it evident that he’d seen what went down. He clicked his tongue, scowling at his shoes before he parted from his hiding place to make his way towards you, a casual grin on his face as he teased your flushed complexion.
He wasn’t stupid.
He knew what those feelings were.
He knew why he acted the way he acted but how was he to make a move now? Surely he couldn’t – not if you accepted that kid’s feelings!
Faintly, in the back of his mind, he could hear you talking but for the life of him, he couldn’t focus on a single thing that you’d said. It didn’t help his already messy thoughts that you didn’t bring up the confession to him – didn’t you share everything with him?? That’s what best friends were for, right?!
I mean… granted, he himself didn’t share with you the fact that he liked you- but that’s that and this is this! Its different!
Banri stopped, gaze staring at his shoes as his mind whirred.
Its…. Different…?
Was it really?
Both of them involved confessions, didn’t it? How was it any different?
“..ri? Banri…!” he blinked, the call of his name bringing him back to reality – to you staring at him in concern. When had you gotten so close? Weren’t you walking beside him? When did you move to his front? But god- you were the prettiest thing he’d ever seen; your (h/c) hair tousled this way and that because of the wind, the way your eyes sparkled with concern for him, the way your skin was painted a reddish hue because of the setting sun-
When had you gotten so…?
Before you could call his name again, Banri’s hands moved on its own accord – gently, he gripped your forearms as he murmured your name. The confused expression on your face was the most endearing thing he’d ever seen and he swore that he was going to have a heart attack because of you one day.
“Hey _______....”
“Yeah…?” the actor felt his breath catching in his throat – suddenly he found that he’d lost the ability to breathe. He could feel his hands shaking, his eyes averting from your brilliant ones as the words he wanted to speak played in his head again and again and again; like a broken record that would torture him until he let them out through his lips.
Moving his hands from your forearms, the man gently clasped both of your hands in his – fingers entangling with one another as he took to staring at your hands rather than your eyes. Sighing shakily, he steeled himself for what he was about to say – not expecting it to come out in a quiet murmur instead.
“I think… I think I love you…”
Bonus:
“O-Oh… I…”
“So you-“ biting his lips, Banri looked up into  your eyes, resolve injected back into his nerves as he spoke his next sentence. “So you can’t accept that kid’s confession, okay?!”
“C-Confession…?” you blinked, staring at him in confusion – which in turn only made him more flustered and more confused.
“Y-Yeah! The,,, the kid from earlier…” your gaze moved from his as you thunk back to the events of the day – remembering the junior who’d given you a letter at the gate just hours prior. An amused smile overtook your features, you disentangling one of your hands to cover your mouth as you struggled to stifle a laugh.
“Oh- you mean that kid??”
“Hey come on! I’m serious here!” Banri struggled with his words as he felt his composure leaving his entire body. Had he misinterpreted the situation all wrong?? Why were you laughing?? Was his feelings a joke to you or-
“Pft- Settsu,” with shoulder shaking with mirth, you took out the letter from your bag – turning it over so that your friend – perhaps now lover? – could see who it was addressed to. “That ‘kid’ wanted me to give the letter to Sakuya. Yknow, seeing as we’re in the same class and all,”
True to your words, there was Sakuya’s name – written in neat handwriting on the front of the envelope, a small heart drawn carefully next to the troupe leader’s name. It wasn’t a letter for you at all. It was for,,, Sakuya.
“But if anything, I’m glad it got you to confess,”
Banri flushed – both embarrassment and relief flooding through his nerves. He hid his face in his hand as the other remained intertwined with yours – your laughter ringing in his ears as he pulled you to walk the rest of the way home.

The 13 Best Korean Dramas Of 2020
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/the-13-best-korean-dramas-of-2020/
The 13 Best Korean Dramas Of 2020
Bae Suzy and Nam Joo-hyuk partner up in ‘Start-Up.’
Although 2020 will make the history books for all the wrong reasons, it was a great year for Korean dramas. With a slew of big budget hits and small quirky stories, k-dramas offered plenty of innovative entertainment to help viewers happily pass pandemic time.
Every drama viewer may have a different list of favorites, but here are a few 2020 dramas that stood out in terms of originality, subject matter and execution.
Park Seo-joon created one of the year’s most memorable k-drama characters in ‘Itaewon Class.’
Itaewon Class
The year started off with the quirky hit Itaewon Class, in which Park Seo-joon’s character overcomes so many odds that he naturally sympathizes with those who society may shun. When opening a cafe he hires employees that others might not and those choices contribute to his success. Park’s generous character is one of the year’s most likable and the drama also features top-notch performances by Kim Da-mi, Kwon Nara, Yoo Jae-Myung and Ahn Bo-hyun.
Why see it? If you’ve never been to Seoul’s international neighborhood of Itaewon, this drama takes you there. The drama provides plenty of feel-good moments and a great soundtrack, including a contribution by BTS member V.
Kim Hee-ae and Park Hae-joon star in ‘The World of The Married.’
World of the Married
Although this drama has not yet made it to all international audiences, it was a huge hit in Korea, enjoying both critical success and nationwide ratings of 28.37%. World of the Married, an adaptation of the BBC series Dr. Foster, stars Kim Hae-ae. Kim plays a doctor who thinks her life is perfect until she learns that her husband, played by Park Hae-joon, has been cheating on her. Even worse, all their friends know.
Why see it? Kim won Best Actress at the Baeksang Awards for playing the drama’s protagonist Ji Sun-woo and the drama was a breakout hit for supporting actress Han Seo-hee. There’s also the guilty pleasure of watching a woman scorned exact revenge on those who betrayed her.
The legal drama ‘Hyena’ starred Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon.
Hyena
The drama’s leading characters, played by Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon, each have their own approach to practicing law. She’s a scrappy small-time lawyer with questionable ethics and he’s a self-satisfied high-profile lawyer at a top firm. Despite their differences—and getting off to a bad start when she scams him—they turn out to be good for each other.
Why see it? Ju delivers a pitch-perfect performance, with his every twitch and grimace creating an unforgettable character.  Ju and Kim have undeniable chemistry that sizzles through episodes of fast-paced high-stakes legal entanglements.
Bae Doona played a zombie-fighting nurse in the second season of ‘Kingom.’
Kingdom 2
The second season of this historical zombie drama was even better than the first. Kingdom 2 also stars Ju Ji-hoon as the prince trying to save his country from a zombie invasion as well as inner court corruption. What makes the second season better than the first is a larger role for actress Bae Doona, whose character takes time out from nursing the sick to battle the undead.
Why see it: It’s a zombie story with a historical and moral twist.
Start Up
Nam Joo-Hyuk and Bae Suzy star in this story of a small tech start-up that gets a chance to compete on a bigger stage. When Bae’s character Seo Dal-mi was young she received encouraging letters from a man named Nam Do-san, but the letters were really written by Kim Seon-ho’s character Han Ji-pyeong. When a grown-up Dal-mi decides to find the real Do-san, played by Nam, Ji-pyeong asks Do-san to pretend he really wrote the letters. Do-san and Dal-mi are perfect for each other but their budding relationship is based on a lie.
Why see it? The story of how the start-up gets started is interesting. Each of the actors—from the leads to the supporting cast— is imperfectly endearing and Kim wins this year’s unofficial prize for being the most appealing second lead.
Lee jun-ki is a potential serial killer married to the detective played by Moon Chae-won in ‘Flower … [] of Evil.’
Flower of Evil
What would you do if you found out you were married to a serial killer? It might be happening to Moon Chae-won’s police detective character in Flower of Evil. Her devoted husband, played by Lee Jun-ki, has a mysterious past that ties him to a serial killer. Did he also commit murders? If he is a serial killer, does his wife love him enough to look past the incriminating clues?
Why see it? Although some of the drama’s plot occasionally veers into the illogical, the relationship between the leads is so charismatic that the drama acquired a loyal and enthusiastic following. The mystery is sufficiently complex and Lee’s tortured performance as the suspected serial killer is mesmerizing.
Park So-dam played Park Bo-gum’s makeup artist in ‘Record of Youth.’
Record of Youth
Record of Youth features ambitious likable protagonists trying to find their place in a highly competitive world. Park Bo-gum plays a model so charming it’s hard to imagine why he’s not already a success at the story’s start. Park So-dam plays a talented make-up artist with dreams. She’s also a devoted fan of his modeling career.
Why see it? Park Bo-gum’s character is as bright as a shiny penny, ever optimistic and upbeat, despite not having much support for his dreams. Watching Park So-dam act is always a pleasure and the real star of the drama might be Han Jin-hee, who plays Park Bo-gum’s supportive grandfather.
Seo Ye-ji aggressively pursues Kim Soo-hyun in ‘It’s Okay Not To Be Okay.’
It’s Okay Not To Be Okay
Easily the most visually appealing drama of 2020, It’s Okay Not To Be Okay stars two of k-drama’s most photogenic actors Seo Ye-ji and Kim Soo-hyun as a twisted children’s book author and the psychiatric nurse she needs to calm her nightmares. Not only are the actors beautiful, but the drama’s graphics, cinematography and costumes are also gorgeous.
Why see it? The drama explores the topics of autism and the mental scars created by early trauma. Oh Jung-se’s performance as Kim’s autistic brother was one of the best of the year.
‘The Good Detective’ is a fast-paced crime thriller starring Son Hyun-joo and Jang Seung-jo.
The Good Detective
The Good Detective delivers a Scandi-noir vibe with its insightful character development plus some over-the-top, superhero police action scenes. The drama stars Son Hyun-joo, who might have the most expressive face of any k-drama actor, and Jang Seung-jo as a detective whose super-power is having a fortune.
Why see it? The Good Detective is an involving police procedural with top-rate performances. Oh Jung-se plays a hard-hearted villain, a dramatically different role than his vulnerable character in It’s Okay Not To Be Okay.
Nana plays a woman who pursues politics for a paycheck despite Park Sung-hoon’s objections.
Into The Ring
The wry comedy stars Nana, formerly a member of k-pop group After School, and Park Sung-hoon, who recently played a convincing but comical killer in Psychopath Diary. Nana plays a plucky unemployed woman who runs for office, motivated largely by the paycheck, but also from a sense of justice. Although Park initially finds her irritating, he eventually helps her fight local corruption.
Why see it? Nana is so charismatic in this role, viewers may want to see everything she’s ever done. She and Park develop a low-key lovable comic rapport that keeps a story about local politics happily enjoyable.
‘My Dangerous Wife’ is a cat-and-mouse mystery within the story of a marriage.
My Dangerous Wife
In this dark comedy Choi Won-young plays a chef who plans to murder his wealthy wife, so he can inherit her money, but when he arrives home with a poisoned bottle of wine he finds she has been kidnapped. The note the kidnappers left behind warns him not to contact the police or they will kill his wife. Should he? It sounds like an opportunity.
Why see it: Interesting plot twists and turns make this drama fascinating to the very last episode. The complex storyline involves a mistress, a mysterious old friend, a detective with a suspicious wife, and a set of curious next door neighbors with secrets of their own.
Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin experience an impossible love in ‘Crash Landing On You.’
Crash Landing On You
Crash Landing On You, which first aired in Dec. 2019, successfully introduced a wider international audience to the joys of k-drama viewing. The mega-hit, starring Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, follows the story of a South Korean heiress who accidentally lands in North Korea and is helped by a North Korean officer at the risk of his own life.
Why see it? Everything about the drama is top-notch—the cinematography, the romantic storyline and the excellent performances from the lead and supporting actors. The drama also offers some interesting insight into North Korean daily life.
Shin Sung-rok stars in the paranormal thriller ‘Kairos.’
Kairos
Kairos is a tense paranormal thriller about karmic debt. In this drama two people who live in different times stumble on a supernatural way to talk and thus untangle their preventable personal tragedies. Shin Sung-rok plays a callous businessman whose daughter is kidnapped. Lee Se-young plays a woman whose mother disappears. Together they must change fate but they can’t connect in their own time. This plot device was used in the film The Call and the k-drama Signal, but it feels fresh in Kairos, given the carefully crafted moments of suspense and some intriguing performances.
Why see it? Both Shin and supporting actor Ahn Bo Hyun do an excellent job of portraying men who question what they once held sacred.
