So I was looking closely at Hook’s signature in Return to Neverland and noticed that Hook’s writing (particularly his capital letters) is pretty similar to Hans Conried’s. I can’t prove the animators did this on purpose, but I really hope they snuck this in as an intentional nod to the original voice actor.

So, I did a thing. not-wholly-unheroic shared a little conversation some time ago with lilterwilliger who has several Hans Conried photos. BUT what caught MY attention is the offhanded comment tragicbeauty1991 made about seeing Hook in some of these poses.

Well, I took a page from the Disney animators and used the photos as a Hook study... sadly it hasn't gotten any further than that draft. Which looks neat, but all it is still me just tracing over it.

So the question is... should I share it??

What have you noticed for Hans-isms so far? (Out of curiosity)

For those who may not have seen our initial conversation, this ask is in response to this post:

To answer your question, there are several things I’ve noticed that are classic Hans facial expressions or gestures that made it into the film but especially…

(1) The eyebrow raise.

Hans had a very distinctive right eyebrow down, left eyebrow up look that Hook uses whenever he’s deep in thought, skeptical, frustrated, or plotting.

(2) Talking with his hand(s).

Hans is extremely expressive with his hands when he gets excited, and so is Hook. This is probably most obvious during the scene right after the “sick scene” when Hook gets the idea to capture Tink and during the actual manipulation scene. There’s this little hand fluttering gesture he does at one point that always reminds me a bit of my favorite gif of Hans ever. (This one!)

We can also see some of this dramatic use of the hands with Mr. Darling (also voiced by and animated based on Hans).

(3) Angry gestures

Hans, like Hook, was a pretty tall guy. At around 6’ 2”, Hans towered over people and when acting in the role of someone angry, he often hovered over the other person and would get very close up in their face. Hook does this too.

(4) Vocal similarities

There’s also a lot of vocal similarities between Hans’ ordinary speaking voice and Hook. Hook is basically Hans dialed up all the way emotionally. Naturally, the similarities show up most noticeably when Hans is playing another role that requires some over the top acting. Hans had a very distinctive sort of growl, almost, when playing an angry character and he brings it out in full force as Hook. Hans also tended to roll his R’s when he was trying to sound a bit posh, and Hook tends to do the same thing.
