A Spectember art piece that took me most of the month to make. Showcasing a Batesian mimicry ring found in China some 7-10 million years in the future.
The northern snakeheads have diversified into several families of amphibious fish that are all highly successful in the Chinese subtropics. Overall, they now possess primitive feet derived from their pectoral fin.     One such species is the Violet Deathhead (Rutrumaput pharmaphyrous). A species of semi-aquatic and semi-fossorial snakehead that uses its shovel head to dig up a wide variety of prey. What makes the Violet Deathhead stand out is its iconic purple, black, and orange patterning used to warn predators of its potent venom-tipped rays.     The Violet Deathhead's infamy would spread throughout China's ecosystem. Its colors became an iconic warning of certain death. Something so iconic it spawned a variety of mimic species, all possessing the same patterns to ward off predators.
One of the first notable mimics isn't a snakehead or a fish altogether. But a sailfin lizard. Its ancestors rafted here from the Philippines during a particularly nasty southwest monsoon. They became so successful they spread across the entire continent.     This mimic species is known as the Shamfin Lizard (Zhonghydrosaurs purvexicauda). They are a species of arboreal herbivores with a slight tendency to feed on insects.     As their name implies, their tail takes on the same purple, black, and orange patterns used by the Violet Deathhead to present itself as such to trick predators. They even go as far as to develop fake eyespots on their back to match the model species' heads.
With as much speciation also comes the weight of extinction. And it is no different in this ecosystem as well. During this period, many species of Cranes and herons had to migrate away from China or go extinct altogether. However, this opens a new niche for an unexpected group of birds to flourish.     The second mimic species is the prism-winged Stiltit (Hydorbaino porphypteros). They are a species of wading piscivores that descend from the white-browed tit warbler.     They retained their ancestors' coloration but now for a new purpose. It's now within their underwing and patterned in the likeness of the Violet Deathhead's sail.
The third mimic species is the Mockfry Mawed Moth (Stekoprosteros mimeofry). They are species of flying pollinating moths that retain their proboscis into adulthood. They are surprisingly social and live in large flocks their whole lives. As their genus name suggests, their resting state has their forewings erected upward, unlike other moth species.     They possess similar colors and patterns to the Violet Deathhead but seem to mimic their species' young. The moths and fry are around the same size and live in large groups. Plus, Deathheads have their iconic coloring during their entire lives.
The final mimic species mentioned isn't a vertebrate or even an animal. Instead, the Fool's Death (Coleus teleinephos) is a species of Eudicot flowering plant. The stem of the Fool's Death grows into an arc, with the upper stalk resting in the giant leaves of the plant's base.     The Fool's Death's signature green and purple leaves allow it to mimic the patterns of the Violet Deathhead. And since their ranges overlap the most of all the mimics. The Fool's Death is surprisingly the most effective at being a mimic as it gets avoided most of any of the mimicking species.

So you want to read about 2000s Harry Potter fandom drama
Let me introduce you to my favorite subreddit, r/hobbydrama, by way of posts about some of the most sordid moments in early Harry Potter fandom history.
Content warning: While most of these are amusing Internet dramas, the first one is genuinely awful, as will be clear from the summary.
I've put them in chronological order and pulled the summaries from the posts. Many thanks to everyone on Reddit who put these posts together!
Popular author turns out to be a cult leader (Late 1990s-2015*)
TL;DR: A famous fanfiction author turns out to be a real creep. He uses a lot of pseudonyms and sockpuppets, convinces some of his fans to move in with him, claims to mind-meld with fictional characters, insists his fanfiction is better than Harry Potter itself, and has questionable views on women. Oh, and he was involved in a triple homicide and used the girl's death for fun and profit.
*Edited to fix my "2005" typo. Sorry! Thank you @olderthannetfic for the catch.
The Cassandra Cla(i)re Saga (2000-2016)
TL;DR: The author of the fanfic trilogy that popularized “Draco in Leather Pants” is also a famous YA author, with a long, complicated history involving fandom drama and Ginny/Ron romance fic.
Married to Severus Snape on the Astral Plane: The Story of the Religion of Snapewives (early 2000s-early 2010s)
TL;DR: There was an actual religion centering on Severus Snape, who was portrayed as an eternal and divine being similar to the Christian God. It had theological arguments, early schisms, and its own vows and prayers, which were all taken completely seriously by its followers, the Snapeists.
Bored woman creates 12+ sockpuppet accounts, becomes a fandom celebrity (2002-2006)
TL;DR: Woman wants to be a part of the popular clique, uses a combination of ridiculous lies, made-up fangirls, and Christian strawmen sockpuppets to build up enough fame to join the popular clique. Is eventually exposed.
J.K. Rowling's husband's "fake" appendicitis, symbolic hippogriff romance, evil Chinese abortions, and the genetics of shipping the wrong ships: tales from the Harmony vs. Ronmione ship war (2005-2007)
A not-so-brief, still not at all comprehensive account of some of the earliest, stupidest Harry Potter shipping drama. Many thanks to the archived remnants of Fan Wank for detailing all of this, and to the people who made this extra funny by coming up with some of the most batshit ship names and insults I’ve ever seen. Merlin bless the good ship Ronmione/Romione/Heron/whateverthefuck, long may she sail. And, though the HMS Harmony/PumpkinPie/whateverthefuckelse capsized long ago, may her memory live on.
Goffick Harry Potter and Fabricated Child Abuse: The Saga of My Immortal (2006-2007, 2017)
Here’s another summary of ridiculous internet drama. This time, it involves Hermione Granger being an emo weaboo who speaks exclusively in broken Japanese, a satanist vampire Harry Potter whose scar has turned itself into a pentagram, a teenage girl’s shitty Mary Sue who gets darker and edgier with every passing chapter, and a YA author desperate to capitalize on the unlikely success of an infamous fanfic published a decade ago. Welcome to the increasingly weird saga of My Immortal.

Tiny break from my regularly scheduled fanfic art to draw up some STRQ parents, featuring the Ooblecks.
Strangely enough, it was this post about snail color dyes that made me be like... I need a blue, snail-man named Tek in this story right now... but where?! I never named Bartholomew's dad, and they've got slime-based Semblances, so BOOM! It was all downhill from there!
Spoiler-free versions of my character notes for these guys under the cut:
Phyllis “Merryweather” Xiao Long:
Tai’s mother.
Is kind of the unofficial community leader of Patch's social circles.
Her maiden name is in reference to the fairy from Sleeping Beauty.
Her first name is a RvB reference that started as a joke placeholder and accidentally became permanent. 🤣
Yichen Xiao Long:
Tai’s father.
Ran a dojo on Patch.
His name is based off of Chinese characters “Yi” 奕 , meaning “great: and “Chen” 辰 meaning “early morning/ sun/ dragon of the Chinese zodiac… which is in reference to Taiyang’s own name meaning “great or little sun dragon” (—buuut IDK Chinese so all this is speculative Google searching on my part).
Sheila Oobleck:
Bartholomew’s mother and Phyllis’ best gal pal.
She loves gossip and wears yellow. She crashes any car she gets behind the wheel of.
Her name is PURELY and INTENTIONALLY a RvB reference! Semblance is strictly cosmetic, like Bakugo's mom.
Tekhelet “Tek” Oobleck:
Bartholomew’s father.
Archaeologist, studies ruins. Wears Blue.
Semblance would probably be related to the slime from snail trails. His name is a color Blue, based on a stray tumblr post (see above) I saw about blue dyes, Tyrian purples, snails, and Jewish historical fun facts.
Zariyah “Gale” Rose:
Summer’s mother.
She was kind and gentle, had an angelic singing voice, and baked a mean batch of cookies.
Her Semblance was akin to a “gentle breeze”.
Both her names are a reference to “wind”.
Ryley Rose:
Summer's father.
His Semblance allowed him to grow seeds into flowers just in the palm of his hand (though they died shortly after). If used on seeds in the ground, his Semblance instead helped the vegetation grow stronger and healthier than it ever would have on its own.
His name means “rye clearing” in homage to his Semblance and “growing crops” as a farmer.
Heron Branwen:
The twins' father.
He is the leader of the Branwen bandit tribe.
His Semblance is "Positive Outlook" - a precognitive ability to alter probability and bring about the most beneficial outcome through visions of differing scenarios.
Ardent:
The twins' mother.
She was said to like tea and birdwatching; had red eyes, an explosive temper, and was good with a sword.
I always thought her Semblance might have something to do with shadow-based teleportation.
Her name is one I use in fics sometimes because it's unique-sounding. It means "burning; enthusiastic, passionate" and I believe is also a shade of Red.

FAKEMON COMMISSION for SatyricalSol
SUGARCRANE - Grass/Fairy DEX: The sweet-smelling coating on Sugarcrane's wings provide great heat resistance, with prolonged exposure adding a nutty note to the aroma. The Sugarcrane with the shiniest coat will be the leader of its pack. Although they are migratory, Sugarcrane are fiercely territorial. These haughty Pokemon will cruelly attack or trick any Pokemon for territory and resources. NAME ORIGIN: sugarcane + crane INSPO: European nobility, sugar, pastries, caramel, colonization, cranes HERONAGER - Grass/Fire DEX: The fruits adorning Heronager's plumage add a pleasant kick to meals when dried, but must be prepared carefully—they are prone to exploding. They often prey on Capsakid to enhance the pungency of their attacks. NAME ORIGIN: heron + onager (the catapult, not the animal) INSPO: Chinese warriors, Szechuan pepper, siege weapons, a group of herons (a.k.a. a siege)

Let's (re)Read The Great Hunt! Chapter 21: The Nine Rings
Tumblr media
You can tell I'm getting into the weeds when it comes to chapter art. Frankly, the people who made this card were getting into the weeds when it comes to game mechanics because that card effect has nothing to do with Mr. Caldevwin. Is that a spoiler? The whole rest of this post is full of them when it comes to this series, so don't keep reading if that bothers ya.
This chapter starts up with the Harp icon as Rand performs this evening and reflects a little on Thom. I suppose it also reflects inns in general.
The innkeeper was a lean woman with a long nose and graying hair, but her wrinkles seemed part of her ready smile more than anything else.
A thin innkeeper? She must be evil! That's why she's giving a home to these soldiers.
“As you say, my Lord.” Mistress Madwen’s glance flickered to Rand’s sword; the bronze herons were plain on scabbard and hilt. She frowned slightly, but her face was clear again in a blink.
I was kinda joking because I don't remember much about this gal but she is very snoopy. I suppose part of it is just her job but her disapproval of Rand's weapon does make me wonder.
“We are not hunting the Horn, mistress.” Rand did not glance at the bundle in Loial’s arms; the blanket with its colorful stripes hung bunched over the Ogier’s thick arms and disguised the chest well. “We surely are not. We are on our way to the capital.”
A thousand miles away, Moiraine feels a sudden surge of pride and does not know why.
The innkeeper gave a surprised blink when Hurin sat at table with them—an Ogier, it seemed, was one thing, but Hurin was clearly a servant in her eyes.
All of this is pretty good set-up for how stratified the societies of the eastern subcontinent are. In Baerlon and the Borderlands there wasn't much concern for any divisions within the party except gender lines and Moiraine's being Aes Sedai, and it's hardly unreasonable to expect blurred lines in social divisions in a small group traveling like this, but it's clear that in Cairhien the wilderness is no excuse to start fraternizing.
Selene’s was still half full, but she motioned curtly for one of the girls to take it.
Lanfear's wondering what the odds are of her finding a stasis box with some proper Chinese food in it.
Rand hesitated only a moment. It had been too long since he had practiced the flute rather than the sword, and the coins in his pouch would not last forever.
Here's that important theme again. We're in book 2 and already Rand's worried he's losing his sensitive side to war. He doesn't even know.
Selene looked at Rand as if wondering what he was...
I wonder if LTT had ever picked up any instruments. Probably not.
Did she really let me go? I wonder if she’s following me. Or waiting for me. “Sit down, Captain. Please.” Caldevwin drew a chair from another table. “Tell me, Captain, if you don’t mind. Have you seen any other strangers recently? A lady, short and slender, and a fighting man with blue eyes. He’s tall, and sometimes he wears his sword on his back.”
Note here how Rand is already succumbing to the paranoia associated with his condition. Book 1 Rand wouldn't have had these thoughts and he wouldn't have felt compelled to ask questions like this immediately either.
“A wondrous place I have heard, Lord Rand—I may call you so?—and fine men, the Andormen. No Cairhienin has ever worn a blademaster’s sword so young as you. I met some Andormen, once, the Captain-General of the Queen’s Guards among them. I do not remember his name; an embarrassment. Perhaps you could favor me with it?”
You can tell that this guy is only a Captain because he's nowhere near subtle enough to play in the Cairhienien Major Leagues.
Just as Selene opened her mouth, one of the serving girls let out a cry and dropped a lamp she was taking down from a shelf.
Lanfear's really restraining herself here to not make the Captain himself have to run away screaming.
The Cairhienin’s eyes sharpened. “It is part of the statue, my Lord Rand,” he said slowly. His gaze flickered toward Loial; for an instant he seemed to be considering something new.
"Are the Ogier allying with Andor to steal our old statues?!" Sure it sounds silly but like, what else can they be thinking? They probably don't know that the statue's a sa'angreal (it's way outside of the usual) but why couldn't it be a war asset from ancient days? Why would the Andorians even know about it to send a spy? Rand's causing trouble again and he barely even knows it.
“I have five hundred laborers in camp beyond the diggings, and even so it will be past summer’s end before we have it clear. They are men from the Foregate. Half my work is to keep them digging, and the other half to keep them out of this village. Foregaters have a fondness for drinking and carousing, you understand, and these people lead quiet lives.” His tone said his sympathies were all with the villagers.
Well based on the size of the village, five hundred carousers hitting them up every night would probably get the place burned down in a week or two. Keeping civil order is an incredibly difficult task!
For twenty-three years Barin Madwen and I were arguing when we weren’t kissing, so to speak. That’s by way of saying I have some experience. Right now, you’re thinking your Lady never wants to see you again, but it’s my way of thinking that if you tap on her door tonight, she’ll be taking you in.
Again, the "skinny innkeepers are obvious Darkfriends" things is a joke but... it could work for Mistress Mad wen, couldn't it? Moves from Lugard to Cairhien to escape bad deeds there, runs the inn to keep her eyes open in case anything happens, Choedan Kal discovered so she becomes important, Ishamael takes her to the party so she's up to date, and here she is with advice that could be entirely innocent or could be straight from Lanfear - and why attack Rand like all the DFs from last book did when he's already in a Forsaken's clutches?
It's probably not remotely intended in the text but hey.
“Daes Dae’mar, Lord Rand,” Hurin said.
In the Game of Houses, you win or you die.
Okay maybe I'm getting my fantasy epics confused but I do enjoy how Jordan managed to communicate all of GRRM's themes even though they're not central to his own thesis.
“He has the right of Daes Dae’mar, Lord Rand. Cairhienin play it more than most, though all southerners do.”
And this is a bit of cultural blindness, really. We saw that Malkier's end came from someone playing Daes Dae'mar and while everyone has to fall in behind their leaders for obvious reasons there's going to be some jockeying. The Borderlands are just so far away from the rest of the world that they don't have to play the game at all, especially since Tar Valon actually comes through for them consistently - but then, that's the Game too, in its own way.
But in the morning, Selene was gone. When Rand went down to the common room, Mistress Madwen handed him a sealed parchment. “If you’ll forgive me, my Lord, you should have listened to me. You should have tapped on your Lady’s door.”
I'd say this still fits the Darkfriend theory.
Loial almost missed a step. “I never like to be far from my books, Captain.” His wide mouth flashed teeth in a self-conscious grin, and he hurried to strap the chest onto his saddle.
Okay Loial, I guess I was a little mean calling you naive before.
“He had the inn watched, Lord Rand,” Hurin whispered. “The Lady Selene must have gotten past them unseen somehow.”
Caldevwin has every reason to wonder if Lord Rand murdered his wife and is having the Ogier carry her corpse around in a box at this point. Good thing we'll never see or hear from him again, unlike Mistress Madwen who apparently gets mentioned again in Winter's Heart for some reason? Bizarre.
“Nothing is happening the way I expect,” Rand said.
And it never fucking will.
Next time: Stuff doesn't happen as Moiraine expects either! (Unlike Rand though, she'll sharpen up on her understanding of the future)

Genshin Impact: Daughter of Sun and Moon. Love letter to Candace (part 1)
My sympathy for Candace, whom I currently main, started very bittersweet. First, I don't usually play hydro characters. Second, I didn't really like her clothes' design. It was the choice of voice actress in Chinese dubbing that became a nail in the coffin to my decision and influenced me to wish after her. The rest is history.
Regrets? Only one. Candace's presence feels narrow in quests. She deserves more attention.
From surface level of analysis, she doesn't stand out. Another character to pat your head in act of almost motherly love and be the voice of reason everyone needs. Seen plenty of these in almost every media I've ever consumed. But once I started connecting the dots…
Tumblr media
Candace's relationship with grey heron is greater honor to her character than players usually grasp. That bird, called bennu in its prime, has held incredible importance to Ancient Egyptians. They saw the grey heron as a vessel for the soul of god of Sun, Ra, thus taking it as a symbol of immortality, never-ending cycle of death and rebirth. The Ba of Ra in Heliopolis, the emerald of Egypt. I found out there are two versions about origin of bennu:
It has formed itself from the flame of sacred tree around the temple of Ra.
It came into this world through the crack in Osiris' heart.
These legends are hidden within following traits — that Candace acts independently, although she's bind to stay in Aaru Village all the time, and that she's a descendant of King Deshert, Al-Ahmar (The Red One). Being chosen for the role of village's guardian at the age of eight is cherry on top. In numerology number eight represents infinity. Life's loops.
Bennu itself is portrayed with two long feathers coming from its head and atef crown of Osiris. Sometimes the crown is replaced with Sun disc.
Tumblr media
Source: r/Genshin_Impact_Leaks.
Candace's ponytails subtly resemble feathers I mentioned, and her hairpiece references to the Sun disc, however its shape is of a crescent Moon. The Egyptians interpreted Sun and Moon as divine presence in a form of light that gave them the feeling of warmth and safety.
While the Sun referred to birth and energy, the Moon was an attribute of Khonsu (from the word khenes — to travel, to cross), God of Time and Justice. He was treated as a patron of night travelers, wild animals and a healer. Not to mention his fame for being a personification of balance.
One of Khonsu's forms was named Khensu-pa-khart or Khonsu-pa-khered — Khonsu the Child. It was supposed to rise as a crescent Moon, bringing light each month as a symbol of hope and regeneration.
Before Khonsu became a protective deity, his description in The Cannibal Hymn suggests a bloodthirsty being — loyalist to King of the Dead (Osiris), who'd capture and devour other gods with his help.
I'm more than convinced a huge part of Candace's personality is inspired by Khonsu. Even her splash art reminds me of Moon in waning crescent phrase. She takes great care of her people and greets temporary visitors with utmost hospitality. However, she's no stranger to cruelty if it justifies the means, as I've seen in the Archon quest. Candace balances between kindness and violence. Her threats left unspoken.
Tumblr media
Black headband with golden eyes front and back might be a reference to the Eye of Ra and the Eye of Horus.
The first one — what's interesting — is a counterpart to violence god Ra has committed; a sign of femininity, calmness and rationality. Some tales present it as a separate goddess who, although shields Ra against his enemies, may act either as consort, sibling or daughter of the God of Sun. She's the fierce lioness bringing peace upon dispute saw by men, just like Candace.
The Eye of Hours is associated with protection, which Candace has been performing since she was a child. Horus lost his eye as a result of conflict with Set, God of Desert, and later had it restored with help from other deities. At some point, he offered this particular eye — blessed with restoring abilities — to his deceased father, Osiris, to resurrect him in the afterlife. Because of that, the Eye of Hours was — and continues to be — broadly used as protective amulet.
Moreover — in compassion to Candace's heterochromia — according to various texts, Horus' right eye symbolized the Sun (quintessence) and left eye the Moon (resilience). Woman's eyes are mirrored. The difference, I suppose, is a reminder that while Candace's lineage comes from King Deshert himself, she was born of mortal world.
At the beginning of our friendship, she seems quite distrustful of the Traveler and, asked about heterochromia, bluntly responses:
...Strange? I'm not sure what you mean, both amber and blue are fairly common eye colors, I believe...
However, her stance changes over time:
I'd really love to look into your future with my amber eye, if I could... Something tells me everything would be golden... somewhere between the color of sunlight and honey. A color filled with hope. Your journey will be a smooth road ahead. I give it my blessing.
Candace's not only fully aware of her heritage and [hidden] abilities — she implies she knows the Traveler is a supernatural being who descended to introduce Teyvat to Golden Age, and gifts them spiritual protection.
In some cultures it is believed people with heterochromia are allowed to glimpse into Heaven and Earth, past and future, simultaneously through differently colored eyes. For example, in a few places of Eastern Europe this condition is referred to as witch eyes.
Tumblr media
Candace proudly wears gilded ankh on her neck. This symbol in Ancient Egypt found its use as a representative of eternal life. Alluding to femininity and prosperity, ankh could has been called a key of life and stood as a metaphorical bridge between mortal and divine realms. A person bound so strongly to her people past, present and future is rare to find indeed, what makes the guardian of Aaru Village more unique.
Coming back to her connotations with bennu (gray heron), I must point out bird's presence on Candace's shield and back.
My shield? Well, according to what people outside the village say, it has the blessing of bennu. With this shield in hand, all the grains of sand are my eyes and ears, and the desert is ready to do my bidding... Their imaginations can get a little carried away sometimes. But anyway, that aside, the main thing for me is it always works a charm.
What if those people are partially right? While I understand woman's annoyance with escalated rumors, I'd like to think a greater, heartwarming motive hides within shield ornaments. Candace faithfully serves Aaru Village and in return, gods themselves watch over her. In battle, she screams prayers — so far, seems they're listened and answered to (as Candace performs excellently on field). Everyone needs moral support sometimes.
Besides, Candace's pectoral — brooch on her back — looks suspiciously close, yet simplified, to this:

Source: Pectoral of Horus with Sun-disk. From the Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), Valley of the Kings, West Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo.
I dare to say, Candace is not only a personal favorite of mine — she's personal favorite of King Deshert. Truly unexceptional character.
Part 2 is here.

Sabine Cheng Remembers
Sabine Cheng remembers growing up in rural China, and the rice fields on the outskirts of her village where she and her cousins splashed around in while their parents farmed their crops. sometimes, she hears the flap of pigeons wings outside of her kitchen and thinks wild herons are soaring above her again.
Sabine Cheng remembers leaving her country of origin, and moving to France to study the fine art of pastry, and the large hands of the clumsy boy named Tom that folded layers of butter into his dough beside her. he knew a few words in italian, as his mother was from italy.
Sabine Cheng remembers her wedding day, and her uncle arriving to walk her down the aisle. he told her he loved her like his own daughter in Chinese before they got to the alter. her eyes were misted over before she even said her vows.
Sabine Cheng remembers her only daughter being born, and the scream the echoed in the hospital room as marinette was thrust into her arms. her daughter had the same almond eyes as she did, and if she squinted right her black hair seemed almost blue in the hospital light.
Sabine Cheng remembers buying her daughter a pair of pink ballet flats for her fifth birthday, and riding the bus through the streets of paris. they were familiar now, and Marinette’s legs swung back and forth on the bus after their trip. Marinette never liked the stay still.
Sabine Cheng remembers when Marinette began to pine after that Agreste boy, and she prayed with all of her heart that he wouldn’t break hers. her daughter was far too young to fear love, and for all she knew, the boy was lonely. perhaps he would frequent her house and she could bake treats for him as well.
Sabine Cheng remembers when Marinette began to lose sleep, and when she began to scream in the middle of the night. akuma attacks had begun to frequent their city. paris was restless and afraid. it broke her to realize her daughter was among them.
Sabine Cheng remembers seeing that girl in red atop their house on Marinettes balcony a few nights in a row, and pondering these things in her heart. she wondered if that young heroine knew just how loved she was, and that she was would sleep safe above tom and her bedroom that night. she wouldn’t interfere with what seemed like destiny.
Sabine Cheng remembers more things than one usually does.

big ol' chunk of asks
Tumblr media
During the Late Rodentocene to Early Therocene, they were successful for a bit but as extreme specialization to a limited niche is a gamble at best, they didn't handle tectonics and changing climes and eventual fusion with the mainland.
Tumblr media
They've made a resurgence in the Temperocene, there's not many species and they just fill generalized nondescript medium-sized omnivore niches, but when it comes to population they're quite abundant, as their foraging lifestyle and varied diets keep them from being pressured by podotheres, rabbeasts and piggalo.
Tumblr media
Best case scenario, everyone tagteams the harmsters seeing them as a proper common enemy. What happens afterward really depends on how well they can get along with other intelligent sophont species.
Tumblr media
Heh...this could make a good "Land of the Lost" or "Terra Nova" style adventure book or tv series where people of present day earth end up on a mysterious planet filled with strange creatures and the huge "they're all Earth rodents!" reveal being the big Season 2 finale plot twist lol.
Tumblr media
Similar likely to the Procoptodon and other giant Pleistocene kangaroos that walked on two legs rather than hopped. This could have been a starting point for increased independent leg mobility, with larger pelvic muscles, elliptical femur heads, ankle joints that allow weight-bearing on the inner side of the foot, and perhaps a modification of the muscles at the base of the tail to become more hypertrophied as a counterweight. The caudofemoralis muscle is found in nearly all tailed tetrapods, though likely less so in rodents (though Chinese dwarf hamsters have relatively long tails). In mammals, its action is to flex the tail laterally to the corresponding side while the pelvic limb is bearing weight.
Tumblr media
That is, if they can survive the immense crushing pressures. At the bottom of the deepest trenches the water pressure is said to be equivalent to the weight of an elephant, so if they can somehow deal with both that and find a way to respire entirely underwater then they've got a shot.
Tumblr media
Not exactly the same genus, but the desert-dwelling duskmice, while likely genetically very different after 150 million years, have not superficially changed from their external appearance and ecological niche, still basically being recognizably hamsters and differentiated only by size or color or behavior. While related to forms such as the whale-like cricetaceans or the canid-like zingos or the really weird ones like the daggoths and rattiles (all of which are cladistically duskmice), some have found a stable niche as small crepuscular seed-eating rodent and have stuck to it successfully for four geologic eras like the horseshoe crab of hamsters.
Tumblr media
Galliform and anseriform-esque niches are well within the ratbats domain as of now. Niches where they don't have to fly as efficiently have been filled by the ground ratbats, and some still fill waterbird niches, though wading-bird niches akin to herons is more of a pterodent thing due to their long legged bipedal stances and more flexible necks.
Tumblr media
I can't really find the tag? I look it up and nothing shows up. Anyway, I'd assume that it would be something comparable to the faster snakes of today like black mambas which can reach speeds of around 23km/h. Limbs really do just give a speed advantage.
Tumblr media
Perhaps? After all tetrapod limbs originated from fish fins which in turn emerged from undulating membranes of early chordates. It's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
also I vaguely remember something there called a cetitan and apparently it's the name of a Pokemon now lol

Experience the Wonders of the Galapagos: The Best Galapagos Cruise Itinerary
The Pacific is home to the Galapagos Islands, which are some of the most important marine biodiversity archipelagos.
Rich in biodiversity, they can be classified as an aquatic haven. It is a stunning maritime landscape, and the atmosphere will keep you interested. For more information about the best Galapagos cruise itinerary, read on.
Tumblr media
Galapagos is a destination worth visiting once in a lifetime, ebbed in the rich ethos of marine biodiversity. Galapagos is an excellent example of a place with much marine life. It is also a unique place for nautical life fans and people who like to travel to meet up.
The archipelago is made up of 18 islands and 107 islets. Only 4 are inhabited: San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Floreana, and Isabela. The main islands on the itinerary are:
Baltra: A barren and arid land, Baltra comprises annual grasses and vines. Its vegetation is limited to saltbushes, cacti, and palo santo trees.
Bartolome is a coastal haven where many different animals live, such as sea lions, stingrays, spotted eagle rays, white-tipped sharks, and black-tipped sharks. Underneath, you have snorkeling and hiking opportunities that provide extraordinary sights you can’t afford to miss.
Chinese Hat: The island’s name comes from its shape, which is like a Chinese hat. The island is known for its white coral sand beaches, where you can glimpse sea lions and Sally Lightfoot crabs.
Espanola: Find blue-footed and Nazca boobies, doves, albatrosses, sea lions, and more. Its dry climate means it is home to reptiles. You can find some excellent rara avis here.
Tumblr media
Isabela: Classified for its rugged beauty and new periphery, Isabela is a gem find. Outstandingly characteristic of the Galapagos due to its wholly volcanic nature, it is also one of the largest islands in the group. Because of how the land is laid out, it is a fantastic place that shows the true nature of the Galapagos.
Mosquera: Flat and sandy, Mosquera is an exciting spot for wildlife lovers. Its enchanting landscape is home to herons, seagulls, and sea lions.
Ferdinara: Pink flamingos cover the landscape here. The island has white, sandy beaches that give the shores a beautiful cover.
Genovesa: A nest to innumerable species, Genovesa is rich in its bird population. Unaltered by man, it remains an abode for bird species, quietly preserving and silently providing.
Seymor Norte: Pass by Seymor Norte to catch a glimpse of blue-footed boobies and frigate birds. These rare birds are safe in the abundant wildlife trees in Seymor Norte. Marine iguanas and sea lions also contribute to the coastal biodiversity here.
Rabida: Sharks and manta rays can be commonly found here. Coves and cliffs comprise the terrain here, rendering some excellent views.
San Cristobal: Exuberant vegetation and coastal terrain can be seen herein. Adorned with freshwater lakes, it is home to some extravagant species.
Santa Cruz: Find marine turtles, white-tipped sharks, and leopard rays, among many more. This temperate island is home to many beautiful species, making it an excellent place for nature lovers to visit.
