Outside the bank
10.30am
Clarke peered out of the back window of the van. Her leg was bouncing Bellamy noticed. He placed his hand on her leg to sooth her, trying to steady his own nerves at the same time. “Everybody know what they’re doing?” Bellamy askes, looking at all of them separately. A chorus of yeses and yeahs was heard. “Everybody know why we're doing this? Clarke askes. “For a big payout.” Harper rolled her eyes at Murphy, pushing him slightly. “For charity.” She corrected. “Or at least, mostly for charity.” “At least we get to keep something.” Murphy followed. Jasper and Monty snorted at his comment.
They had all decided to keep the portion that they needed to survive modestly and hand over the rest to a different charity every time. This is what they always do, find a charity that needs help and then they find a place to steal money from, like big corporations. This time however, they had sat their sights on a bank, which was a first.
“Raven.” Clarke nodded at her. “On it.” Raven got busy on the laptop, disabling the camera’s on the outside and inside the bank. She turned off from all sides, either around the building or across the street or inside. They all needed to be off so no one could identify them. “Okay, I got it. All of you be safe out there. I don’t want no funerals, you hear me.” She made it clear. “We’ll be careful, promise.” Clarke reassured her. “Okay, everyone, grab your things, it’s happening.” Bellamy ordered. Everyone checked their bags or pockets for their supplies. “Everyone ready?” Clarke asked, everyone nodded at her. “Okay, let’s go.”
All four of them followed in Clarke’s and Bellamy’s footsteps. Bellamy grabbed a hold of Clarke’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “We’re going to be okay.” As they all walked into the bank they all took out their guns. “EVERYBODY GET DOWN!” Clarke yelled, shooting her gun in the air. Harper quickly made her way towards the stalls and broke one open using a lifehammer and crawled through. “NOBODY TOUCH THE EMERGENCY BUTTON OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY!” She yelled loudly. “Somebody get me the keycard to the vault!” She followed up.
Bellamy checked out every person that was cowering on the ground. One of them should be the manager and he should have the second keycard. “You got the keycard yet?” Monty asked Bellamy in a haste. “No, still looking. Go check with Harper.” He nodded and moved on.
Bellamy noticed one man wore a suit and he figured he must be the manager. “Hey, you.” He said, pulling the man up by the back of his clothes. “Where is the second keycard?” “I don’t have it.” He stuttered. “Really, ‘cause I’ve looked at everyone here and you’re the only one wearing a suit and you have a clip on your tie saying Arkadia Bank, so I think you’re lying. And do you know what happens to people who lie to me?” The man shook his head. “They get shot. So I’m giving you one more chance to tell me where that keycard is.” He nodded feverishly. “Here, It’s in my pocket. Take it. Take it.” He spluttered.
“Got the keycard.” Harper yelled. “Me too.” Bellamy informed. “Great job, you guys.” Monty said as he picked up the keycards from his friends. He rushed over to the metal door and gave one keycard to Jasper, needing two people at the same time to swipe them. Once the door opened the two of them rushed through followed by Clarke. She looked at her watch and sighed.

“We are not doing so hot on time, people. Let’s hurry up. Keep checking the road for the police, Murphy. We’ve been here more than ten minutes. They must know by now what’s going on.” Clarke yelled as she walked down the stairs to the vault.
“Wow, wow, wow. Stop right there!.” Jasper instructed Clarke. “Why, what’s going on?” “I’m not a hundred percent sure, but I think they have lasers.” He pointed to the path towards the vault. “It’s too easy.” He added. “Hey Raven?” Clarke asked via comms. “Yes, Clarke.” “Can you see if there are laser lights on the way to the vault?” “I can try.” She said.
“In the meantime,” Clarke started, “Monty, do you know how to open the vault.” “With explosives!” Jasper interrupted. “That’s if we have no other way, Jasper.” Monty assured Clarke. “I think I could hack into the vault.” He said pointing to the computer attached to the safe.

“Ah!” Harper screeched. Murphy immediately looked up from his job at the door. “Harper!” He ran over to the stall she had broken and jumped behind the counter. He ran to the man who was wrestling Harper to the ground and grabbed him by the throat and pushed him backwards, before pointing his gun at the man. “Give me a reason!” Murphy growled.
He gave a hand to Harper to help her up from the ground, gun still pointed at the man. “Are you okay?” “Yeah, fine. Thanks.” She said, turning towards him, putting a finger under his chin and turned his face towards herself. She kissed him soundly on the lips. “Thank you, but I’ve got this. I don’t think they will try something again.” Murphy turned to really look at her, and a snarl crossed his face. “I should shoot you. You gave her a black eye.” Murphy said to the guy. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” The man stuttered. Murphy growled one more time before looking back to Harper. “Keep your gun aimed at all times, babe. I don’t want something to happen to you.” “Yeah, yeah.” She said, aiming her gun high, “Now go do your job.” She pushed him towards the open stall and back to the front doors, where Bellamy had taken over looking for trouble at the front doors.

“You should be able to see them now.” Raven said through the comms, mentioning the lasers in the path to the vault. “We do, but we won’t be able to go through them.” Clarke sighed. There’s a lot of them. Can you turn them off?” “I’ll try my damndest.” She replied. “You said you had explosives? Do you think you’ll need to use them?” Clarke asked Monty and Jasper. “I’m hoping I can just hack into the system and open the vault that way.” Monty informed. “But, If that doesn’t work, we got C4 and that definitely will.” Jasper interrupted. “Won’t we have to worry about structure failure?” “No, banks are made to last. Made to protect for a long time.” “Okay, if you say so, Jasper. I trust you.” Clarke said.

“I’m going to go check up on Clarke. Keep everybody down and out of those doors, Murphy!” Murphy sighed, but nodded, this left only Murphy and Harper to look after the clients, workers and police. Bellamy walked through the metal door and down the stairs towards the vault. “How are things going down here? Wow.” He said, taking a step back from the lasers. “Not so well, I see.” Clarke rolled her eyes at him. “Raven’s working on it. But we don’t have much time anymore. We’re already here for more than half an hour.”
“Come here.” Bellamy asked, feeling that Clarke was stressed out. He pulled her in for a kiss and grabbed at her hips. They kissed softly but it became more passionate as the kiss went on. “Got it!” Raven exclaimed excitedly. All heads turned to the lasers that were no longer there. Clarke pecked Bellamy on the lips and then left the safety of his arms to take a better look at the vault. “Okay, so Monty, now it’s up to you.” Clarke encouraged.
Monty walked up to the computer and started typing away at it. “AY, POLICE ARE HERE, WE NEED HELP!” Harper yelled down the stairs over the sound of sirens. “You go, Jasper and I got this.” Monty assured Clarke and Bellamy. They quickly ran back up the stairs, guns raised. Harper had moved from behind the counter to the front doors next to Murphy, where they were shooting at the cop cars.
“Only shoot if necessary.” Clarke barked. “You want them to stay at bay, don’t you?” Harper insisted. “Are you going to help us, or what?” Murphy boomed, opening the door once more and randomly shooting out of it. “Watch out for civilians.” Bellamy yelled. “They have all been evacuated by the police. There is no one to worry about.” Harper explained. “But the police.” Clarke muttered. “If we do nothing, we get caught. It’s our only option. You know this, Clarke.” Murphy growled. Clarke sighed, but got back on the comms, watching Harper, Bellamy and Murphy take care of the police. “Raven, is the outer wall from the vault connected to the alleyway where you are?” “Uhm,” she started, “Let me check.” “I’m going to check up on Monty and Jasper.” Clarke yelled as she made her way down the stairs. Four of them shooting out of one door was going to be too dangerous anyway. The chance that they hit each other would be too big.
“Do you have enough explosives for the vault and the wall to the outside?” Clarke wondered curiously. “We should be able to make that work.” Jasper said. “Raven, got any news for me? Clarke asked. “Yeah, I do. If you go straight to the back you’ll end up in the sewers, there’s a ladder straight up towards the alleyway.” “Thanks Raven. Wait for us in the van and get ready to leave.” “Got it.”
“Let’s get this going.” Clarke said, pointing towards the vault. Monty nodded at her and opened his backpack. He picked out two bars of C4 and stuck them to the vault door. He put two wires in and attached it to a cooking timer. “Everyone ready?” He asked Clarke and Jasper. When there was no complaint, he put the timer on ten seconds and rapidly walked down the hall, pulling his friends with him.
There was a loud bang. and stone and shrapnel went flying. Clarke covered her head with her hand and waited until all the pieces had fallen to the ground. Alarms started blaring loudly and it almost made it impossible to think. “Okay, let’s start filling bags, people.” Clarke strode into the room, opening one of the bags and filling it with the hundred dollar bills that were lying on a cart. “Oh my god, check this out.” Jasper sounded astonished. He had found a closet that was filled to the brim with gold bars. Clarke couldn’t have dreamed of finding this much money. They were really going to help some people with this.
“Okay, you load up the last of this and I’ll go get Bellamy, Harper and Murphy.” Clarke said, already walking out of the vault. “Oh and get that C4 ready, we need to leave quickly.”
Clarke walked up the stairs, gun raised, ready to fire. She saw Bellamy behind a pillar reloading his gun. Harper and Murphy were still standing on either side of the door, every so often opening it to fire at the cops. She could see the clients cowering in a corner with each shot that was fired. “We’re blowing up the outside wall of the vault and exiting that way. Raven will be waiting in the alleyway. So, come on. We’re leaving.” “Go.” Murphy told Harper. She nodded. “You be careful, okay.”
Harper ran downstairs to help out Jasper and Monty. “You two,” Clarke started, “Start moving backwards, guns raised. I’ll watch out from here and help if necessary.” And so they did. They carefully backed away from the door, getting closer to the keycard door and slowly down the stairs. As they stepped into the vault, they could hear a team of policemen bursting in the door. “Quick, Monty. We don’t have a lot of time.”
“On it.” He yet again pulled out a block of C4 and stuck it to the wall. “Everybody get back.” He yelled loudly. Murphy pushed Harper behind him, to protect her from the blast. Bellamy grabbed a hold of Clarke and shielded her from the blast with his body. The blast was less explosive than the first. This one didn’t contain any shrapnel, just flying rocks and stones.
“Everybody get down!” A voice yelled from the stairs. Right after that was shooting. Murphy had shot the guy in the chest and moved forward towards the vault. “Let’s go, people!” He grabbed two of the bags and barreled through the open wall towards the ladder in the sewer. Everyone quickly climbed on the ladder towards the outside where the van that was waiting for them. “Come on, get in!” Raven yelled. And that's what they did, they all crammed in the back of the van. There rang a shot out before all of them could get back in.
Raven quickly pulled out of the alleyway and started driving rapidly through traffic lights and around corners, trying to lose the cops. “Arg!” Clarke groaned. “What’s going on?” Bellamy asked her concerned. “My shoulder.” She started, “I think I’ve been shot.” Bellamy helped her out of her black jacket and looked through the neckhole. “Fuck.” “Is it bad?” Bellamy stood up and tried to look at the back of the shoulder and let out a relieved sigh. “It went through. So although it’s bloody and hurts like hell, I think you’ll be fine.” “Oh thank god.”
“Guys, I need help. I can’t shake the police no matter what I do. This wave needs to be stopped so we can get to our backup van!” Raven ushered. “Clarke go to the front, me and Murphy will shoot.” Clarke got up and maneuvered her way to the front of the van, while Murphy made his way to the back. “Everybody get down.” Bellamy said, opening the door of the van, shooting at the cops together with Murphy.
“Okay, they’re done for.” Murphy yelled to Raven. “Great. I’m going to the backup van.” It was a short drive to the backup van and everybody piled right into it, except for Monty, who had grabbed a jerry can and spilled it all over the van, before finally pulling out a lighter and setting it on fire.
And then? They drove off into the sunset with their new found glory. They would, however, still give most of the money to charity, to Murphy’s dismay. In the end, they were just happy they all made it out alive.

Review: Not My Problem
Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth
CW: Classism, Poverty, Bullying, Underage Drinking, Alcohol Relapse, Cheating, Injury
4.5/5
This book is for fans of She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen, heist movie fanatics, certainly fans of Ciara Smyth's The Falling In Love Montage, and anyone up for a queer Irish rom-com. I absolutely loved this book, so bear with me as I get the stuff I wasn't in favor of out of the way. First, while the inner monologue of main character, Aideen, is hilarious and enthralling, it doesn't always translate well for the audiobook. There were moments where it was clear what was being quipped inside her head vs out loud and there were moments when it was indistinguishable. My only other problem was that the book seemed to toe the line of believing it isn't valid to be an angry feminist. However, I do think it came around in the end.
Now, I've told you this, why should you read it? Simple! It is a wonderful book you won't want to put down! Aideen is snarky, creative, impulsive, a big dreamer, and dealing with hard times at home. When she finds herself in a position to give her enemy, Meabh (pronounced: Meve) an injury, she accepts. Meabh is a perfectionist, an environmental activist, bossy, and afraid of letting her dad down. She's also running for class president and needs Aideen to push her down the stairs to buy her time. In exchange, Meabh will owe her one.
Now Kavi, he sees the whole thing, but he wants in. He's got a touch of FOMO, a large dose of hilarity, and a decent portion of sweetheart. He's a himbo, if you're familiar with the term. Kavi mistakenly believes that Aideen is used to doing things like this for people. So with a push from him, Aideen keeps doing favors. Along the way she accidentally forms herself a social circle of misfits, perfect for a heist, should one come along.
Not My Problem will leave you laughing and crying. Aideen and her friends have a lot on their plates as they deal with high school, bullying, the problems afflicting our planet, and complicated home lives. Get ready for Kavi's stories (especially one in Chapter 23), Aideens gym excuses, the favors, how much Aideen will do for her mom, and of course a cute enemies-to-lovers story. Enjoy!
