Hey! I was wondering if you have any recs for any kind of queer book set in Ireland / by Irish authors (or, ideally, both)? I read At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill a few years ago and it still has me biting and screaming when I think about it
(that said, your recs don't need to match those vibes necessarily! I'll take anything!) Thank you!!
Well definitely not the same vibes, but Ciara Smyth and Adiba Jaigirdar are both Irish Sapphic YA authors who set books in Ireland. In Adult, I think you're probably looking at Sally Rooney - try Conversations with Friends!

Title: Not My Problem
Author: Ciara Smyth
Series or standalone: standalone
Publication year: 2021
Genres: fiction, LGBT+, romance, contemporary
Blurb: Aideen has plenty of problems she can’t fix: her best (and only) friend is pulling away, her mother’s drinking problem is a constant concern, and she’s even running out of outlandish diseases to fake so she can skip PE...but when Aideen stumbles on her nemesis, the overachiever Meabh Kowalski, in the midst of a full-blown meltdown, she sees a problem that, unlike her own disaster of a life, seems refreshingly easy to solve. Meabh is desperate to escape her crushing pile of extracurriculars; Aideen volunteers to help by pushing Meabh down the stairs. Problem solved - Meabh’s sprained ankle is the perfect excuse to ditch her overwhelming schedule. But when another student learns about their little scheme and brings Aideen another client who needs her help, it kicks off a semester of traded favours, ill-advised hijinks, and an unexpected chance at love. Fixing other people’s problems won’t fix her own, but it might be the push she needs to start.

Some characters designs I made for one of my favorite sapphic books of all time, Not My Problem by Ciara Smyth!
Tumblr media
I absolutely loved this book, and while it wasn’t a love story, the romance that develops within it is probably my all time favorite! I’ve been wanting to make art for it ever since I read it last year, but my art skills weren’t quite there yet. 😅 I’m happy to be at a place where I can finally get them done!

I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston-
“Chloe Green is so close to winning. After her moms moved her from SoCal to Alabama for high school, she’s spent the past four years dodging gossipy classmates and a puritanical administration at Willowgrove Christian Academy. The thing that’s kept her going: winning valedictorian. Her only rival: prom queen Shara Wheeler, the principal’s perfect progeny.
But a month before graduation, Shara kisses Chloe and vanishes.
On a furious hunt for answers, Chloe discovers she’s not the only one Shara kissed. There’s also Smith, Shara’s longtime quarterback sweetheart, and Rory, Shara’s bad boy neighbor with a crush. The three have nothing in common except Shara and the annoyingly cryptic notes she left behind, but together they must untangle Shara’s trail of clues and find her. It’ll be worth it, if Chloe can drag Shara back before graduation to beat her fair-and-square.
Thrown into an unlikely alliance, chasing a ghost through parties, break-ins, puzzles, and secrets revealed on monogrammed stationery, Chloe starts to suspect there might be more to this small town than she thought. And maybe—probably not, but maybe—more to Shara, too.”
The Falling in Love Montage by Ciara Smyth-
“Saoirse doesn’t believe in love at first sight or happy endings. If they were real, her mother would still be able to remember her name and not in a care home with early onset dementia. A condition that Saoirse may one day turn out to have inherited. So she’s not looking for a relationship. She doesn’t see the point in igniting any romantic sparks if she’s bound to burn out.
But after a chance encounter at an end-of-term house party, Saoirse is about to break her own rules. For a girl with one blue freckle, an irresistible sense of mischief, and a passion for rom-coms.
Unbothered by Saoirse’s no-relationships rulebook, Ruby proposes a loophole: They don’t need true love to have one summer of fun, complete with every cliché, rom-com montage-worthy date they can dream up—and a binding agreement to end their romance come fall. It would be the perfect plan, if they weren’t forgetting one thing about the Falling in Love Montage: when it’s over, the characters actually fall in love… for real.”

THE FALLING IN LOVE MONTAGE.
“How about life's too short to be second-guessing yourself the whole way? You can only go with what you feel right now and if you feel like it might make you happy, even for a while, jump in with both feet, girl, and get wet.”

It's a pet peeve of mine that straight women call their friends "girlfriends." They are not your girlfriends. If you are not getting up close and personal with the lady garden then there are words for that: friends, mates, buddies, pals, etc., etc. Leave us our word, OK?

The book I’m reading, Not my problem by Ciara Smyth, had no right to make me cry because of how it was fed
Like-
So we have the main character right? And she’s messed up. Her life is a mess. She loves her mom and she loves her best friend but she’s also so alone and they love her but they also hurt her too y’know?
And she makes new friends! She finds people who love her and care for her and it’s just
She asks for help

the best YA sapphic books i've read, aka some fluffy book recs
The Gay Girl's Guide to Ruining Prom by Siera Maley
When Zoey's friend Skylar gets stood up at prom, Skylar sends her on a mission: revenge. Zoey sets out to find Chelsea, capture her heart, and then abandon her. The only problem is, Chelsea and Zoey have history.
I LOVED this book. It's one of my top comfort reads; it's well-written, neatly paced, ✨fun✨ at some points and heart-melty at others. 6/5 give it a read!
Home Field Advantage by Dahlia Adler
Ruby is a cheerleader, slated to cheer for (and by extension, seduce) the new quarterback, Jack, who's just transferred from a nearby school for senior year. Only, Jack is short for Jaclyn. Homophobia, misplaced grief, and keeping up appearances pose a serious threat to Ruby and Jack's budding relationship.
Another comfort read. Dahlia Adler is such a talented author, and this is for sure one of her best works.
The Falling-in-Love Montage by Ciara Smyth
TBH, I don't remember a lot about this book- it's been a minute and I'm too lazy to look up the synopsis. Basically a girl meets her best friend's swoony cousin and they make a pact to act out all the romcom tropes- without the falling-in-love part. Obviously.
Like I said, it's been a hot minute since I read this, but it was one of the first WLW romances I read, and it has a special place in my heart. It's also fucking HILARIOUS.
