Fanfiction Prompt
When Adrien got the ring, he saw it as the way forward with all his dreams. Not just being a hero, not just being loved, not just a chance to escape from the four walls of his home, but to finally get away. So, shortly after dealing with Stoneheart, he starts on his plan. First things first: he tells Chloe that he's Chat Noir, he'll need her support. She takes it pretty well, in his opinion, and it's nice to have a confidant that he can trust. Secondly: he quietly starts to move some of the things he truly cares about to Chloe's room at the Grand Paris. It's not much, but it's his, and she promised to take care of it. And then, finally, he transforms, climbs out his window, and doesn't come back. Adrien Agreste is officially missing. Unofficially, people know that he's in Paris, they see him sometimes (he can't stay Chat Noir forever, after all). But no one can catch him, no one can pin him down for long enough to do anything about it. He runs, they chase, and then he just... vanishes for a little while, before turning up again a short time later where the entire thing will start over again. Chat Noir, meanwhile, has been enjoying going to school and making friends. Sure, it's not the easiest thing to have a normal school life as a superhero, but he's somehow managed it (a lot of the more annoying people backed off when they realized that Chat Noir is a gigantic dork, and any boost to their popularity is not worth being seen around such a massive goofball. The rest backed off when it became clear that Chat had absolutely no interest in fake, vapid friendships, and that he was pretty skilled at identifying them). So this is Adrien's life now: a superhero and a runaway. But it's his life, and he finds that he rather loves it, despite the difficulties and the hardships that it brings.

Legion of Super-Heroes: Archives Vol 1 - Pt1
So, the Legion of Super-Heroes is one of those things in comics I was always kinda vaguely aware of. I knew they existed and they where an established legacy thing, but that was kind of the gist of it. I also knew they had particular ties to Supergirl specifically, but I wasn’t aware of the exact relationship they had with her in the comics proper. My only real exposure to them was through the DCAU, specifically the episode “Far From Home” from Justice League Unlimited. Notorious in my young brain for being the reason why Supergirl, my favourite character in the DCAU as a kid, was no longer in the show. Devastated would be an understatement. haha
However, they recently poked back into my brain as I was searching for something to read, something I could sink my teeth into for a while. I haven’t read a comic in quite some time at this point. As of writing the last thing I had read through was the original run of the Teen Titans months and months ago. It’s a fun read if you’ve never looked into it, by the way, I recommend it! Some of my favourite things to go back and re-read are, by far, hero team origin stories and the consecutive adventures and how they evolve thereafter through time, reboots, and particularly DC’s penchant to have multiverse warping events every Tuesday.
I stumbled upon a collection of their stories through the years in a collection through the “Archive Editions” print. Which is, essentially, an omnibus before the term was properly used by DC.
I thought “this could be fun, these guys look a little goofy.” Though, I didn’t want to go in completely blind. Because even if I knew, vaguely, who they where I wanted to lay some groundwork in my brain. So, I headed to google and found a wonderful site that has a general archive of the team’s history through a fansite called “CosmicTeams.” It’s genuinely a wonderful fan site archiving a particular chunk of DC history. Please go check it out!
I’ll get more into it later, but essentially these characters are a Silver-Age team of heroes that where created using the most popular trends of the time.
As I read through I realized that these guys are enormous dorky goofballs in the most endearing way possible. At least as far as the original incarnation is concerned. So, my interest was piqued. I love a good team of dorks. So I jumped right in.
So, finally, we’re here. Cracking open the book to what I hope is a fun new adventure!
THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES!
Tumblr media
The Archive starts out with a nice forward by Mike Gold to properly lay some groundwork for the historical context. At the time of this archive’s publication Mike Gold was Group Editor and the Director of Editorial Development at DC. The forward also makes a footnote that he was also the consulting editor for the Archive Edition series itself.
Gold’s forward starts off by recounting his nostalgia for comics. That at the age of 7, long before the rise of proper comic shops, he knew the exact time when his local news stand would place the fresh comics of the week on shelves. He’d be so excited to go get the fresh comics he’d harass his parents until they relented and let him go.
He goes on to explain the particularly fickle time that the comics industry was currently in 1958. He goes on to explain how there wasn’t a lot of superhero comics on the shelves and that a lot of comics publishers where in hot water or starting to close up shop. It seemed as though costumed heroes where on the oust.
Particular to this was the ending of the “Adventures of Superman” show which had run an impressive 104 episodes. It had been so popular and impactful that it had spun off the Superman comics itself into a number of individual running titles. “Superman” proper, “Action Comics,” “Superboy,” “Jimmy Olson,” and “World’s Finest.” But it wasn’t yet certain what the future was going to be with the Superman show ending.
But, a new way to interact directly with fans was starting to be introduced. The letters column. Though not a new concept for comics, it’s use now was the birthplace of something new and special. Through the various anthology titles DC had at the time people could write in and share their thoughts and opinions. Essentially becoming backseat editors. This also led to what could potentially be considered the birthplace of recognized comics fandom.
One of the first examples of this, curiously, came through Lois Lane. The year before the Superman show ended a Lois Lane comic had been introduced. A single run to see if there was interest in more Superman spin offs. DC was hesitant to make more Lois comics, despite the original print selling well, because they thought the sales came exclusively because of the popularity of the show and not Lois individually. Which, is a funny excuse, because her simply being a woman leading her own comic might’ve been the real culprit as to why they questioned it. but, regardless, because of the writers column and people’s outpouring for more Lois comics she received her own continuous run.
We would see this again with another woman, a “woman of steel.” As 1958 would also be the first proper Superman issue to feature a “Supergirl.” Not Kara proper, but the outpouring for Supergirl to be a continuous part of the comics was so strong that Kara herself would be introduced in full the following year in 1959. We would see this same trend continue with the likes of characters like Brainiac and Bizzaro as well.
Just on a side note PLEASE check out Supergirl’s first appearance in Superman #123. Jimmy Olson makes a super woman from a magic totem that looks like a Ninja Turtle to be Superman’s partner that they would color to look like Jimmy later on. It’s crazy. Check out Casually Comic’s videos on it. It’s so stupid, it’s so much fun.
This leads into the topic at hand, more or less. The creation of the Legion of Super-heroes!
The letters column allowed for DC to funnel in information on what exactly fans liked to see. Which turned out to be time travel plots, team ups, origin stories, and the ground roots of an ongoing series. For the first time in comics history, or so it seemed, the fans where in direct control and DC was willing to play ball with them.
Mort Weisinger, a DC editor at the time, and his team of writers set off to give the fans exactly what they wanted. In Action Comics #247 the world was introduced to the Legion of Super-Heroes. Where three super powered teens from the future come to the past to meet Superboy and make him a member of their superhero club.
It was an instant hit and the Legion would go on to feature in a number of Superman titles around the time before officially launching into their own ongoing series. They would also be the direct inspiration for numerous superhero teams to follow.
Now, without further ado. The first appearance of the Legion of Super-Heroes!
Adventure Comics #247
Tumblr media
So, one day teenaged Clark Kent is just walking around Smallville when some random teen calls him Superboy. Which totally freaks him out, but he elects to ignore it. Then again, as he’s flying around some other teenager calls him Clark Kent. Which, again, freaks him out, but he elects to ignore it again. Then, a third time, a teenaged girl tells him to send “her regards to Mr and Mrs. Kent” which freaks him out to the point he wonders if his secret identity was revealed. But, in actuality, the three teens are from the future and where just playing a prank on Clark. Information he accepts without question.
They reveal into their costumes and their superhero names. Cosmic Boy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Boy! They tell Superboy they’re apart of a superhero club… and I just…
Tumblr media
I CACKLED when I saw this. A good open mouth, head back, cackle. Their costumes are pretty typical, for the time, but the fact their names are written, in full, on their chests in basic text and the literal “super hero club” badge is just *chefs kiss* it’s just so good. It’s just SO funny.
Outside of that the actual costumes are never actually seen again, as far as I’m aware, starting the very next issue that they are featured in they’re in their more recognized, typical, attire. Which is kind of a shame for Saturn Girl specifically because I actually much prefer this costume for her. Aside from the goofy full name in comic sans on the chest, it actually looks really good and surprisingly modern. Of the three her color scheme is also the best in my opinion.
Tumblr media
The three go on to tell Clark that they want him in their superhero club and if he’d come to the future with them for initiation. To which Clark agrees since things are pretty peaceful in Smallville at the moment and they get into a bubble ship and speed off 1000 years into the future.
They show Clark around the future for a bit. Taking him to a “martian ice-cream parlour” and showing him that his parent’s house has become a historical monument.
They also… take him to their high school history class where the teacher has a fully functioning Superman robot? The robot malfunctions before it can show off Superman’s heat vision but Cosmic Boy is like “No worries we have the real Superboy right here” and the teacher, not acknowledging that Saturn Boy just admitted to time displacing Superboy, tells Clark to get a move on and do the heat vision so his students don’t fall behind. To which he does.
The trio then take Superboy to their “superhero clubhouse,” which is a half buried rocket building with “Super Hero Club” written on a white board above the door. lol
Tumblr media
Once inside the clubhouse they explain to Clark that to join their club he has to best each one of the three in an individual challenge to prove he deserves membership. To which Clark is like “easy!”
They REALLY nail home the point that each member only has “one super power” too. Like it’s mentioned all the time how they only have one power. During each challenge it’s like “I can beat them, they only have ONE power!”
The first challenge is against Saturn Girl. She and Superman are tasked with saving a “priceless museum piece” statue that has sunken to the bottom of the ocean.
The two race off to go face the challenge. While Clark gloats to himself that he’ll do this “before she even gets there” he picks up that the Superboy robot from earlier had malfunctioned and was causing havoc at the school. Clark seeing this as a more important thing to do than saving a statue races off to save the day. While confronting it he realizes he can’t just smash it, it has an atomic motor and it’d explode and hurt people. So he has it chase him into the science centre where the science teacher deactivates it with a “nuclear ray.” Which just kinda looks like him holding up a mirror.
By the time Clark returns Saturn Girl has already completed the challenge of saving the statue. By using a “thought-beam” to get a sea monster to bring the statue to the surface. Thus winning.
Cosmic Boy rags on Superboy for losing to a girl and Clark refuses to explain that he, instead, rescued an entire school from a runaway robot because it’d sound like a “weak alibi” for losing. The next challenge is against Cosmic Boy. He and Superboy must go put out a forest fire caused by a rocket that exploded but, uh-oh, as they’re racing there Clark picks up on another crisis! A satellite is falling from space! So he diverts to go stop it. He catches it and literally tosses it like a basketball into a volcano crater on some unexplained planet.
When Clark rushes back to the challenge Cosmic Boy had already finished it. He had used his power of magnetism to collect meteors to overflow a lake and flood the forest to put out the fire. Thus Clark loses again.
I do feel like flooding an entire forest would’ve caused MORE harm relative to the damage done by the fire. But, hey, I’m not in the League of Super-Heroes am I?
Once again Cosmic Boy rags on Clark for losing the challenge and once again Clark doesn’t just simply tell him what actually happened, because reasons. He, again, claims it’d look like he was using an excuse as to why he lost.
As pointed out by Saturn Girl when they return to the clubhouse, he’s lost two challenges against them and their ONE POWER. So Superboy is determined to win his final challenge against Lighting Boy.
A rocket that set off for Mars has a leaking fuel tank and any attempts to contact it to inform it have failed. So the two have to race off and inform them to turn around before they get trapped in space.
Now here’s the situation that really confused me and I just couldn’t see Clark’s reasoning for ditching the challenge. Because he picks up on an INVISIBLE EAGLE that escapes from the hole of a roof of a building that can only be described as looking like a giant orange. His fear being because it’s invisible rocket pilots would unintentionally fly into it without seeing it. But, like, I would assume the eagle is like any other eagle despite being invisible? It wouldn’t go near the rockets if it can help it. Likewise, despite being a big bird, I would assume the rockets of this age would be sturdy enough to hit a bird and be fine? But here I am questioning the logic of the Silver Age to begin with. So who’s the real illogical one here?
But, I digress, because Clark’s solution to this problem is even more confusing! He doesn’t know how he’ll locate the bird, it being invisible and all, so he decided that he’ll go and get an iceberg? Which he holds above the the city, so that it can form frost of the eagle so he can see it. Which, I guess, credit where it’s due because it works and Clark returns it to the city. But there’s no way this was the bigger issue compared to a rocket full of people about to be lost in space. Right?
Either way, Lighting Boy saves the rocket by creating what is basically a giant neon sign made of electricity, so big that the rocket will have no choice but to see it and turn back. Although, no one really seems to bother to check and see if it actually worked or not though.
Once they get back Cosmic Boy just outright refuses Clark membership because he lost all three challenges and then all thee basically go on to berate him and make fun of how there’s no way he’s a “real hero” and that the 20th century must’ve exaggerated his abilities. To which Clark takes with a smile as to not let them see him crack. To which he eventually turns around to walk out and just completely cracks. Sobbing about losing and them making fun of him. To which Saturn Girl stops him and explains that he’s actually in the club after all! Which, I don’t know if I’d want to be in their club after that. But, she goes on to explain that they intentionally set up all those crises to divert his attention from the main challenges so that they could truly test if he's a hero. But it’s presented as if it was some light hearted prank, but they basically tricked Clark into thinking he lost horribly and berated him until he cried. So, like, it just feels very mean spirited.
But before he can receive his badge of membership the Legion gets a distress call! A giant heat lamp in South Pole City has broken and is toppling over! Clark says he’ll go and save the day global warming be damned! He proceeds to use a magnetic meteorite to straighten out the lamp before it topples and uses salt he got from the city in the atmosphere to cause heat lighting to keep the city warm until the lamp is fixed. Then he gets back and immediately asks Saturn Girl why she was wondering why he didn’t use his Super strength to straighten the lamp to which she responds “you read my mind!” Thus Superboy, successfully uses all three of their powers to save the day. Pranking them back in his own way. They all have a good laugh and the League gives him his award. Which he shows to his very unimpressed looking father upon returning to his time.
Tumblr media
I will say, I can fully understand why these kids got popular back in the day. They truly exemplified what was popular for readers at that time in the Silver Age. So it’s kind of a no-brainier as to why they kicked off like they did.
But, I can’t wait to see how the Legion of Super-Heroes evolves from here! Please join me when I cover their next appearance!

Chapter 4
Saturday mornings were Grace’s sacred time. It was the only time of the week that the house was quiet. Even though there were only four of them, the amount of noise that came from the Lee’s kitchen was insane sometimes. And Grace’s door was thin, and right next to it.
She had woken up with a headache, but that wasn’t altogether uncommon for her. She worried about the tumors having spread, though. What if her miracle stopped working?
She shook the worries away as she took off the BiPap and slowly sat up, scooting back against the mattress to lean against her headboard. She had a scan scheduled in a few weeks, and anyway, it’s not like the headaches were horrible. She had become a bit of a hypochondriac ever since her condition became stable. There was always something to worry about.
Grace set her feet gingerly on the ground, her arms and legs waking up less quickly than the rest of her body. It took a few seconds, but the buzzing finally subsided and she stood up. She plugged her cannula into the huge, bulky oxygen machine that she used when she was just chilling around the house. It was easier than lugging the oxygen cart around with her, and tripping James with her cannula was a bonus.
She shuffled into the kitchen on socked feet, the thick fluffy ones the only way to guard from how cold the floor got even in the heat of summer. She stood on her toes to retrieve a plastic container of leftover pancakes from the top shelf of the fridge. Being five foot one made her the shortest person in her family by six full inches, even though she and James allegedly shared DNA. He teased her about getting the ‘short’ gene from their biological parents all the time.
Anytime her thoughts went down that route, she always wondered if her parents regretted adopting her. She knew they’d never say it, but her medical costs were a huge burden for their family. She’d noticed her father coming home from long shifts sore all over, and her mother trying to hide the medical bills from Grace when they came in the mail. Her mother didn’t have a good poker face at all, though, so Grace knew from one look at her that the bill was almost more than they could afford.
She couldn’t even begin to list the ways her sickness affected James. He hadn’t been able to go on field trips, get new sports equipment, or even go to team banquets because her parents had needed someone to stay home or at the hospital with Grace to make sure she was still breathing. Things were less chaotic now that she was stable, but she was still acutely aware of how much her family had suffered for her. Wouldn’t it just be easier if she didn’t exist?
Not bothering to warm up the pancakes in the microwave, she sat in one of the chairs at the dining table, picking at the cold food with a plastic fork. She didn’t want to exist.
In all the stories about cancer, nobody wrote about how boring it was. There were so many things she wasn’t allowed to do, food she wasn’t allowed to eat, places she wasn’t allowed to go. It was just hours and hours of sitting around. For all the good it did, there was no difference between sitting in a treatment center or sitting in front of her TV.
She found herself missing the play, because it had given her something to do. And curiously, she found herself missing Ajay and Skye, the two people in the whole world that she felt like she belonged with.
Is this what having friends is like? she asked herself, already knowing the answer. She’d never been very popular in school, and she’d basically lived a life of isolation ever since her diagnosis. But the memories she had of friends, of playing hide-and-seek with James and Rory and forcing them to act during her childhood playwriting phase, she’d felt that same kind of warmth that she felt when she thought about Ajay and Skye.
She wasn’t hopeful that it would work out, though. Sure, they liked her now, but once school started back they’d both undoubtedly get busy with one thing or another and forget about her.
Maybe that was for the best. She didn’t want to hurt them when the cancer eventually drowned her completely.
Unable to even look at the pancakes, she packed them back up in their container and returned them to the fridge, grabbing an orange instead. She peeled it carefully and chewed on the slices, just about to head to the couch for yet another AME marathon when her phone buzzed in her pocket. Suspicious, she picked it up and read the text on the screen.
Ajay: Hey, are you awake?
She sat on the couch, losing her will to stand, and bit into another orange slice as she responded.
Grace: Yeah
Ajay: How do you feel about pastries?
Grace: Um, neutral to positive?
Ajay: Excellent. I’ll be there in twenty minutes.
Grace blinked. That had all happened so fast. But she couldn’t stop the smile from growing on her face. She had just been thinking about him.
Twenty minutes and a hasty fashion crisis later, Grace greeted Ajay at her front door. He was dressed to the nines, which she expected, and was carrying a glass pan full of little choux pastries, which she didn’t.
“Come in,” she said, trying to keep herself from smiling.
“No hair today,” he said, observing the scarf she’d wrapped around her head in an attempt to tame her unkempt hair.
“You already know my secret,” she replied, leading the way into the kitchen. “What’s in the pan?”
“A deconstructed croquembouche,” he said.
“A deconstructed what?”
“Croquembouche. It’s a really elaborate French dessert, a big tower built with these things,” he explained, picking up one of the pastries and handing it to Grace. She took it and examined it carefully.
“It’s got custard in the middle and caramel on top,” he said when she didn’t immediately take a bite. “It’s all homemade.”
“It looks delicate,” Grace said finally, still eyeing the little pastry. “Do you make pastries a lot?”
“Yes,” Ajay admitted. “I have a habit of stress-baking.”
“I could use a hobby like that,” Grace mused, just before taking a bite of the pastry. Her eyes widened as she tasted the custard in the middle, and how it perfectly complemented the caramel on the outside. The pastry itself nearly dissolved on her tongue.
Ajay smirked as she picked up another one, clearly enjoying seeing how much she liked them.
“Hungry?” he asked after she started on a third.
“Starving!”
Grace had rarely seen this side of herself in the last few years. A hint of the lighthearted optimist she used to be, the goofball that her friends and family loved to laugh with. Someone far more vulnerable than she could afford to be now.
She decided to let it stay. It was way too early in the morning for her to suppress anything. She caught Ajay’s eye and shot him a little grin, surprising him into a smile himself.
“You seem happy today,” he noted.
“It’s the pastries,” Grace said, biting back the words she really wanted to say.
“They’re good, aren’t they?”
“Hmmm,” Grace hummed, examining another puff. “Do I feed his ego… or lie?”
Ajay rolled his eyes, and Grace let out an accidental giggle. She clapped her hand over her mouth, but he had already noticed.
“Cute,” Ajay said, and then shook his head. “Dorky, but cute.”
Grace’s heart skipped a beat. “Did you just call me a dork?”
“Yes, because you’re a dork.”
“Take that back!” Grace said, shoving him lightly. Oh my god, was this flirting?
Unfortunately, she didn’t get to explore that thought any further before her mother’s footsteps echoed from the stairs.
“Grace, honey? Who’s here?”
“Just Ajay,” Grace called back. “He brought pastries. They’re okay.”
“Okay?” Ajay mouthed, his eyes shining and his grin wide.
“Shut up,” Grace mouthed back, before turning to smile angelically at her mother.
“How nice,” her mother said, unfazed by Ajay’s presence. He handed her a puff in return.
“Choux pastries,” he explained. Grace’s mom bit into it, and she smiled once she’d swallowed.
“This is lovely,” she said. “Where did you learn to make these?”
“I had a phase in middle school where I wanted to be a chef,” he explained. “I made my parents sign me up for a youth summer camp at the Culinary Institute in California when I was fourteen.”
“And you were calling me a dork?” Grace cut in, snagging another puff.
“I never said I wasn’t just as much of a dork. But you’re a math dork, and that’s much dorkier than being a food dork.”
“And you like me anyways?” Grace asked, a tentative, impulsive question. It was a test, but she didn’t know what it was for.
Ajay didn’t reply immediately. Grace wondered if he could hear the way her heart was pounding out of her chest. She knew they were both acutely aware of her mother moving around the kitchen, of the floorboards settling under her father’s feet as he made his way down the upstairs hallway, of the shuffling from her brother’s bedroom as he stumbled around in his morning daze, trying to get dressed.
“Do I feed her ego?” he finally said, quietly so her mother wouldn’t hear, a smirk curling at the corner of his lip, “Or lie?”
This time she couldn’t hold back a smile, but she disguised it by biting into another pastry. His eyes didn’t leave hers until James sat down next to Grace, startling both of them.
“Good morning,” James said to Ajay, his eyes sparkling with mischief and his tone teasing.
“Good morning,” Ajay replied in kind. “Want a choux pastry?”
James took it and popped it into his mouth.
“Wow, this is really good. It must’ve taken you a long time to make all these.”
“Mmm,” Ajay hummed in agreement. “Yes, but I’ve had a lot of practice.”
Just then, his phone started to ring. He glanced at Grace apologetically.
“Sorry, I have to take this.”
“No problem, you can go out to the porch if you want privacy,” Grace said, pointing towards the door. Ajay nodded gratefully, and left. The second the door closed, James rounded on Grace, both eyebrows raised. He didn’t even have to say anything.
“Shut up,” Grace said, her smile gone but a light blush covering her cheeks.
“He just showed up with a pan full of pastries? Randomly?”
“He probably made extra, or something…” Grace said, trying to talk about something else, anything else.
James snorted. “I doubt that. It’s pretty clear he’s into you.”
Grace rolled her eyes, though she couldn’t deny that her heart got a little bit lighter after she heard him say that. She tried to shut it down.
“I wouldn’t go that far,” she said unconvincingly.
“Well, there’s something,” James said, his eyes on Grace even though she was staring at the floor.
“It doesn’t matter,” Grace said slowly, still not making eye contact with her brother. “Even if there is something, it doesn’t matter, because I’m still dying and he’s still not.” She felt like she was forcing the words out, not truly meaning them.
Grace lifted her head to meet his eyes then, and she saw his face soften into something sad.
“Grace…” he said, evidently unsure how to finish the sentence. Grace didn’t know what she wanted from him, but it wasn’t that. She turned away, and at that moment Ajay came back through the door, finished with his phone call.
“Everything okay?” Grace asked, glad to have an interruption to the awkward silence.
“Oh, yeah. Erin just called. Any chance you want to join a bunch of us for a picnic in the orchestra pit? It’s a bit of a tradition.”
Grace raised an eyebrow. “Erin? The girl who plays Sarah?”
Ajay nodded. “She’s an actress at Berry, too.”
“Oh, Erin Ward? I’ve seen her around school,” James said. “She’s on my baseball team for the summer league, too. I didn’t realize she was doing a show.”
“You’re more than welcome to come with us,” Ajay offered. “It’s not a theatre thing, it’s more of a friend thing.”
“Will Skye be there?” Grace asked, not sure why she asked. Something in her chest wanted to see the redhead again.
“Of course,” Ajay said. “We always force her to come to this stuff.”
James shot her a side-eye glance, mouthing “Skye?”. Grace just shook her head, even more unwilling to have that particular conversation.
“Sure,” she said. “Let’s go.”
“No wig?” Ajay asked as Grace unhooked her cannula from the machine and plugged it into the canister in the cart she’d left in the kitchen last night.
“Not if they want to be friends,” Grace said. “I’m not interested in lying to people that I’m gonna have to get close to.”
“Touché,” Ajay responded, then held the front door open for her and James.
“Bye, Mom,” James called into the kitchen. “We’re going to lunch with some theatre nerds.”
Ajay caught Grace’s eye, and they both laughed.
The orchestra pit was a strange place to have a picnic, but once they arrived and Ajay turned on all the stand lights so that the small cave-like area was lit by an eerie blue glow, Grace understood why they liked it here.
Erin arrived shortly after Grace, James and Ajay, toting a stack of pizza boxes that she nearly dropped upon seeing James.
“James, oh my god! What are you doing here?”
“I’m your lighting tech’s twin brother,” James said, a bit of a puppy-dog look on his face as he looked at Erin. It was Grace’s turn to raise her eyebrows at her twin, who completely ignored her.
“Erin, you’re the lead?”
“Yup,” she said proudly. “Me and Rory, that is.”
“Yes, yes, I couldn’t have asked for two better leads,” Ajay said, sounding exasperated. Grace could tell he wasn’t from his smile. If anything, he seemed exactly in his element as he relieved Erin of the pizza boxes.
“So, how’s baseball?” Grace asked both Erin and James, trying to keep her mind off of Ajay’s grin.
“We’re miserably losing, but it’s going well other than that!”
Bemused, Grace had to match Erin’s smile. They talked about summer league, Ajay doling out slices of pizza and staying out of the conversation about sports, until Rory and Skye arrived.
Even from a few feet away, Grace could see the darkness behind Skye’s neutral expression. She didn’t dare mention it, but scooted closer to the redhead once she sat at Grace’s side, trying to let her know she was there for her.
“Good to see you guys,” Ajay said. James offered Rory a fist bump, to which everyone else in the pit rolled their eyes.
“So, interesting place for a picnic,” James piped up after swallowing his first piece of pizza whole like a vacuum cleaner.
“It’s dark in here,” Skye offered. “Quiet. Not many places like that in a theatre.”
“A good place to think,” Ajay added.
“And to run lines,” said Rory. “Not many others know about it, so it’s perfect.”
“Well now you’ve let me in. Won’t that disturb your haven?”
Ajay and Skye both opened their mouths, possibly to refuse, but Rory piped up before either of them could say anything.
“No way, Gracie,” they said, lightly punching her shoulder. “You’re welcome anywhere around here.”
Ajay let his mouth close, refocusing on his pizza slice. Skye’s pizza remained untouched as she examined the nearest music stand.
“James, have you ever seen Ragtime?” Erin asked, trying to defuse some of the tension.
“No, actually, I haven’t.”
“You haven’t? I’d have thought, with a twin like Grace, that you’d be well-versed in musical theatre,” Ajay asked, looking surprised.
“Ha, not so much. She and Rory would make me watch The Sound of Music and Hello, Dolly with them when we were kids, and I was forced to play background characters in their plays, but that’s it.”
“Come on, you know you loved acting in The Snail That Lived Forever,” Grace refuted.
“You think I liked having salt dumped on my head?” James retorted, and Grace pushed him.
Skye watched them, her blue gaze switching between them.
“What about you, Skye? Any childhood tech shenanigans?” Grace asked, hoping to include the girl in the conversation and get rid of the lost look in her eyes.
To her surprise, Skye smiled a little bit and nodded. “Actually, when I was five, I liked to draw. Just… not on paper.”
The six of them traded stories well into the afternoon, including an animated recount of Rory’s sabotaged flash mob by Ajay. Skye added stories about previous shows at Berry and from the summer, vividly illustrating disastrous missed cues and the antics of a boy named Trevor, someone who seemed like a wholly unpleasant person to Grace.
The more she laughed, the more something settled in Grace’s chest. It felt like a puzzle piece, a part of her settling back where it belonged. She wondered how long it had been gone.
Too long, she concluded as she traded bitten-lip smiles with Ajay and good-natured eye rolls with Skye. Way, way too long, she added when she saw the way her twin’s face lit up when Erin set her eyes on him, how his breathing stopped when she put a hand on his shoulder.
She was definitely going to tease him about that later.
Rory said they’d drive Grace and James home, but not before Ajay pulled Grace aside.
“You have a good time?” he asked.
“Sure,” Grace replied. “Sorry we didn’t get to talk more, just us.”
Ajay shook his head. “Nevermind about that.”
Grace nodded, feeling brushed off by his curt phrase. “Um… have a good evening, Ajay.”
“Thanks, Grace. You too.”
After saying quick goodbyes to Skye and Erin, the twins followed Rory out to their car.
After they’d been driving for about five minutes, Rory turned the radio down.
“Grace, James, maybe you guys can help me with something,” they said, their eyes focused on the road.
“Yeah, what’s up?” James asked. From the passenger seat, Grace just angled herself to face them.
“It’s… these other actors. Clint and Natalie. They play Younger Brother and Evelyn Nesbit, Grace.”
She’d seen them before. They seemed almost glued to Rory’s side.
“What about them?” she asked.
“I don’t know. It’s kind of embarrassing to say,” they hedged.
“They seem kind of… desperate,” Grace said, trying to be kind but also trying to make it easier for Rory to talk about.
“Yeah,” they said, grabbing onto the lifeline. “I’m starting to think they’re obsessed with me.”
“They probably just both have a big crush on you,” James interjected. “It’s happened to some of my teammates. Probably just because you’re a big-shot actor.”
“Maybe,” Rory said, but they still looked troubled. “I don’t feel that way about them, though.”
“Maybe you need to tell them that. They could think it’s mutual, or maybe they’re enjoying flirting with you. Thrill of the chase, yknow.”
“Like you and Ajay,” James added from the backseat, entirely unhelpfully. If her cannula wasn’t in the way, Grace would’ve turned to glare at him. As it was, she was sure he had an impish grin on his face. Grace resolved to strangle him with her cannula as soon as they got home.
“Ajay?” Rory asked Grace. Grace just hid her face in her hands, too tired and too embarrassed to face her childhood best friend’s judgement about the crush that she’d tried her hardest to stamp out.
“You know what, I could see that,” Rory said after a long silence. Grace didn’t take her face out of her hands, but her heart started pounding again. They could see that?
“He brought her pastries this morning,” James said. “And I definitely caught them flirting.”
“Shut up!” Grace hissed at her twin, deciding that strangulation by cannula was too merciful. Instead, she’d steal her parents’ knife block in the middle of the knight and slice him up before anyone knew what had happened.
“Damn,” said Rory, whistling low through their teeth. “That’s practically a confession of love in Ajay-ese.” Grace’s mind went blank, either too full or too empty to process anything. Possibly both too full and too empty, all overwhelming her at the same time.
“I knew it!” James crowed. He was just starting to say something else, but Rory’s car came to a stop between the two houses.
“You’d better run, James,” Rory advised, seeing Grace’s death glare pointed at her twin. As James took off, Rory turned to Grace and laid a hand on her arm.
“I won’t say anything,” they said. “Not to Ajay, or anyone else. And anyways, it sounds like he feels the same way.”
Grace didn’t acknowledge the last part of what they said. “You’d better not tell anyone. I’m going to kill James as it is, I’d rather not kill you too.”
“I promise,” Rory said, grinning. “Now, if you’re trying to kill James, you’d better get inside.”
The next few weeks passed in kind. Grace got to hang out with Skye in the booth more often, which was a relief. She was able to escape the chaos of the stage and the house, and watching the colors reflect off Skye’s pale cheeks and nose could only be another benefit. She wasn’t sure if Skye noticed her watching.
Their masterpiece continued to take shape. Ajay’s masterful and admittedly irritating changes, edits and tweaks evolved the show from a passably entertaining show to a true work of art. So much so that although the entire cast and crew groaned when he yelled “Hold!” for the fiftieth time in a single scene, they all still got caught up in the emotion of it all.
The whole group of them-- Grace, Ajay, Skye, Rory, Erin and James-- occupied the city with their mischief on their off time. Skye tore through department stores, folding up shirts and correcting displays before the workers could even find the mess that previous customers had created. Rory raided the food court, bestowing the title of the worst place they’d ever eaten at upon the Sbarro on the far end of the Cedar Cove Mall, and the title of the best on the hibachi place they’d quickly gotten addicted to.
Erin and James often disappeared into the sportswear and team logo shops, and one Friday after rehearsal, James emerged from a Nike store with a huge grin on his face and Erin’s hand in his. Grace stared, and James reluctantly let go of Erin’s hand and pulled his twin aside.
“I asked her out,” he said.
Grace’s eyes went big. “Wow, good for you!”
“We’re going to see the Portland Timbers this weekend. I was so surprised when she said she had tickets, I haven’t seen them play in a while.”
“Yeah, not since we were little,” Grace remembered. “I’m starting to think jocks are just a different type of nerd. Sports nerds.”
“Hmm,” James hummed. “Oh, speaking of nerds, do you have any plans this weekend?” He wiggled his eyebrows. “Maybe with a certain someone?”
Grace sighed. “Rory’s asked me to help run lines, so that’s what I’m doing Saturday. Nothing to do on Sunday.” She cast a look towards Ajay, who was huddled in a corner with Erin.
“Look, I think they’re talking about you,” Grace said, drawing James’ attention towards the gossiping friends. Erin was talking animatedly, a huge smile on her face. James blushed.
“She’ll be better for me than Amber was, at least,” James said. Grace pursed her lips. That was another thing she didn’t like to think about. James’ relationship with Amber got really intense really quickly, which was mostly because of the chaotic energy the small cheerleader had. But Grace still couldn’t help but wonder if James would have handled that whole thing better if she’d been there for him. If he would’ve recovered from the heartbreak more quickly. But she’d mostly been in the hospital, and the effect that had on her brother didn’t escape her notice.
Grace gently punched her twin’s arm. “I hope so too,” she said, hoping he hadn’t caught on to any of her internal struggle.
“You should go ask Ajay if he wants to do anything this weekend,” James said after a bit of silence.
“He sees me enough already,” Grace said. “He’ll get tired of me.”
“I really don’t think he could,” James replied. “Things like that don’t apply when you have a crush.”
“I don’t really know how he feels about me,” Grace said. “And even if he did like me, I’m not sure what I would do about it.”
“Oh, come on. It’s not like it’s hard. Just go ask him out, I promise it’s really just that easy.”
Grace shook her head. “No, no. I shouldn’t even like him. I’ll just end up hurting him.”
James sighed, but didn’t say anything else because Erin was heading towards the twins. Ajay fell back a little bit, obviously meaning for Grace to come join him, but she told herself not to. She smiled at him, thinking she probably owed him that much, and then walked faster to catch up with Rory

Lin Goes to KCON LA
imma tell y'all abt KCON LA DAY 1 (THIS IS P LONG??)
Let me just say that i couldn't scream much bc even the day before my voice was so scratchy and sore from cotton candy???
So once we got there my voice dropped like half an octave and I could rap like wonwoo eheh, It's still p low rip
First of all it was so F.U.N. if you ignore the fact I'm really socially awkward and kept saying too much and messing up my words and-
Btw there's free McDonald's fries and ice cream in a smol cup lol
We tried the speed friending panel & soonli/Zen made a friend (I did not of course rip im too awkward)
OK WE GOT FREE AUDIENCE TICKETS TO SEE GOLDEN CHILD AAAAAAAA
((It was because we were wearing matching Golden Child shirts 😁))
Ajdjdbdj TAG = ARMSARMSARMSARMS
Seungmin's outfit was so cute and smol?? Idk maybe that's just me
And Y was being dorky it was adorable
They made hearts for a charade kind of game and Y(?) was the only one who did one on his head, and said it's because he wanted to make it bigger for more love sjsjbdjd
They played this drawing game and Daeyeol didn't realize when he had to start so the host had to say it again in Korean ㅋㅋㅋ
They drew this weird geometric cat-car thing??? And said it was a transformer lmao
And Tag's English is cute lol he said some "thank you so much" stuff at the end
We also watched Trophy Cat perform with Edward Avila!!!!
Eddy is like,,,the biggest goofball, he kept stopping mid-sentence to respond to the audience, apologize on how tired he was, and later just body roll or smth
Actually no Aoora was body rolling
Aoora is so extra with his dancing skksns
To end the day we went to KLUB KCON👌
It was lit man it started with a lot of commercials and awkward music
But then Crush came out and he killed us with his vocals like wow a king
"Do you know Crush? Do you know Crush's song? ___?" DORK ILY
"I think I have a crush on Crush- no I don't but he's a boy crush and a half"
He also kept extending his high notes to be obviously longer than they need to be lmao but like damn vOCAL KING
And with him we got Dynamic Duo which was so cool that we got an encore bc of this one guy
I think the same guy and his girlfriend(?) Or whatever their connection is were so loud lmao they kept shouting out at them when they were talking
Like NONE of us knew their "who are we" fan chant ripppp
"URIGA NUGU???" "URIGA NUGU??????"
"When we say 'uriga nugu' you say 'dynamic duo', not uriga nuguㅋㅋㅋ"
HEESUN LEE
I feel bad bc she was trying hard to keep the energy level high but everyone wasn't really,,,,moving? Idk if it was bc of dynamic duo using up all our energy or
But wow we love a feminist KWEEN like damn her lyrics are like really cool
Such skillz, #haters_get_rekt
Then we got to see Ellen and Brian perform!!!
It was kinda funny bc Brian was doing a Lie solo and they accidentally played Baby Don't Stop behind him, spoiling their next performance lol
Then eSNa performed and like WOW I STAN NOW
A vocal and producing l e g e n d
She showed us an unreleased song!!!!!!
And then MOMOLAND heck yeah boiii
They performed a not as popular song but EDM version
THEY ALSO DID JOOE'S DANCE FOR THE DANCE BREAK IT WAS WONDERFUL
Only one song from them tho rip
Then GOLDEN CHILDDDDDD my bois
They did Let Me, took a break and introduced themselves individually in such a cUtE way I wish my recording was louder
Then they did Sea and Crush oncrushoncrushon- *Zen tells me to shut up*
IN2IT MAN wow I wanna stan
The host was suggested by the audience to dance and he was like "I should ask In2It to teach us their dance"
So they did Sorry for my English and Inho(?) Had to take over and do
*first move* "I'm sorry, I cant understand what you're saying" *next move* "but I don't care" (in English)
Their song is Sorry for my English but they're decent at English???
And then we had a little dance thing after until 11:00
They ended with Loser and all of us were waving our arms
My entire legs were so sore after
I couldn't walk properly aksnisn
Well anyway we were so tired after that I couldn't move much
sO DAY 2 OF KCON this isn't as long as Day 1's lol
I lost soonli/zen bc I got claustrophobic when people were pushing through to see Amber next to the Choice booth
I was so red faced and stuff bc a staff member was telling me to exit the other way when all I wanted to do was sit behind the booth to get some air
To be fair I was low-key hyperventilating so I was v lost and didn't realize where I was wandering off to
And then I went to the exit on the other side of the convention and a lady kicked me out and told me I couldn't sit to charge my phone even though we did it earlier :)
ANYWAY I had the sudden urge to just spend money and buy another album, so now ya girl has YMMD and AL1!!! I got Woozi for my lenticular in ymmd and a woozi cd lmao
Momoland did a talk AND NANCY SANG DISNEY SONGS IT WAS BEAUTIFUL
Twice was after and like EVERYONE (like half of everyone) in the ground floor went to see them
It was so packed like wOWzA
WE SAW GOLDEN CHILD AGAIN TOO
I had a clear view of Daeyeol from between people's arms, and also Tag is taller than the Toyota???? But lmao all I saw was his nose and up it was hilarious
I DANCED ALL OF DWC DURING THE RANDOM PLAY DANCE IT WAS GR8 even tho im scarred for life now bc of improvising woozi’s and joshua’s part for no reason
Honestly the teamwork for the random dance play is amazing
There were so many improv moments for so many of us; I had to be Joshua n Woozi during their solos and low-key panicked LMAO you can see it on camera I was front and center I'm still embarrased rip but eh
I was so happy tho aisbwishe my practice in middle school finally put to use (if anyone finds a vid pls show me)
Peach did Bingle Bangle GO APPLAUD HER
I GAVE SOMEONE A KIDNEY FUNCTION MEME
"I RECIEVED A MEME!!!" I was so happy akjshs
We ended the day just chilling at the random dance play center it was lit
This isn't kcon related but like me and Zen were thinking of an au once we left; Robber!Wonwoo who bursts into convenience stores with the mask on from Un Haeng Il Chi
TIME FOR MY EXPERIENCE OF KCON LA DAY 3 (this is also kinda long bc of my fangirling but anyway)
((Also @junspurplehair @myheartismayonaise @gentlejisoo + sorry I couldn’t stay with y’all for long, there were issues with communication bc Peach’s phone died. I hope y’all had fun tho!!!))
AAAAAAAAAAAAAA LITLITLITLITLIT CONCERT WAS GR8
I didn’t do much besides attend the svt artist engagement and give kidney function memes, so let’s just jump straight to concert!
However lemme mention Dokyeom and Seungkwan did in fact do the gay as they say (they just,,,danced to Havana and like put their faces real close akdjfh)
The pre-show was good btw, it was p chill and hype at the same time bc a woman covered stuff with a violin +singing; also she did one of those things where you record a sound (in this case tearing/crumpling paper) and loop it to make background sounds
SoNE1 from UC Davis covered aju nice, a v nice performance
I can’t remember when it happened but in case you haven’t been paying much attention to svt in kcon stuff, WE GOT TO SEE SPECIAL SVT STAGES
IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE TOO LIKE AKLDFHS
Vocal unit just appeared with NO WARNING from under the little stage cover thingie
WOOZI STARTED SINGING DON’T LISTEN IN SECRET
they made it to the next chorus or smth THEN WONWOO INTERRUPTED my bias list WITH AN UNRELEASED SONG WITH HIP HOP UNIT
the lights turned red, it was lowkey scary, I was shook,
thEN PERFORMANCE UNIT CAME IN WITH LILILI YABBAY
LITLITLITTYABBAY ok sorry
anyway I was v hyped abt that, but other groups were just as good!!!
IMFACT HAVE GR8 STAGE ENERGY GO STAN im abt to stan
Even if you don’t like their songs, they have really good performance energy!! Peach agrees
NANANA IS SO GOOD we gotta stream once it’s released
JuNCurryAhn, our violin boi, did a little solo to introduce Pentagon!!
Either before or after he performed his own song tho, it was coolio
PENTAGON THOOO im sad E’dawn wasn’t allowed to go, and was it Yanan who also wasn’t there :(
Of course they performed Shine, but also Beautiful and Runaway and now I have respect for Hui’s high notes and Runaway’s choreo
JINHO jakfdjka HIS LITTLE BACKPACK MADE HIM LOOK SO CUTE
I was dying over him in Runaway with a smol backpack
CHUNGHA IS A QUEEEEEEENNNNNN
If I wasn’t ace I’m like 59% sure I’d be bisexual af bc like wowza
She performed Rollercoaster and when the camera focused on her face she winked and like that’s all you could really see
Peach was focused on the cute backup dancer lmao
He was pretty cute tho ngl
fromis_9 also performed, and tbh their songs aren’t really a style I'm into, but like respect!!! They have a lot of jumping in their choreo and they did it in like wedges!!
Roy Kim calmed everyone down sometime after either of the last 3 artists
Not everyone was really interested bc he’s not as hyped as the others but then he took out his guitar and did his high notes in The Blower’s Daughter and I was shook once again
NU’EST W W/DEJA VUUUUUUU I LOVE
Aron is like making his way up the bias list ladder bc damn visuals,,,still no bias tho as usual
I wanna learn the Where You At and For You choreos, they’re cool
Then Roy Kim and Chungha went to introduce the next artists, and since it wasn’t Joshua and Vernon, I was shaking Peach like THAT MEANS SVT IS NEXT SVT IS NEXT-
SVT performed Oh My! and everyone was so hyped!!
They did some challenges whiCH BTW DOKYEOM DID SOME BEAUTIFUL HIGH NOTES BY SINGING CAN’T STOP THE FEELING
I stan the actual sun
Then Jun did the In My Feelings challenge
I’m assuming they rehearsed that, but Jun still looked shook, like ‘o shit it’s my time’
Then Vernon rapped his rap in Rocket and like Hoshi and someone else did the jump from the choreo lol
And MINGHAO DID A B-BOYING ROUTINE it was v short but still cool
THEN they closed it out but of course it was like
“Byeee!!!“ *stage goes black*
“...“
“HA JK YEAH ALRIGHT SAY THE NAME SEVENTEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN YUP“
They also did Aju Nice and DK sang his own version of aju nice during the last chorus (I think)
It was the version from one of their other concerts that’s like
DKAYYYYYYYYY x1743803 ajU NICE then he pretends to slap Hoshi
When all the artists came on stage Mingyu hit Ren’s(?) butt lol, Peach pointed it out and then I saw someone in did the same to Mingyu when he was crouched down lmao
Then it actually ended (and I’ve been shook ever since)
Also lol so I couldn’t remember the English title for “바람개비” or the tune, so I had to desperately explain it to Peach like “wind...windmill??” and it wasn’t until after they played part of the mv to intro the special svt stage
“oH PINWHEEL I MEANT PINWHEEL EARLIER“
