Was thinking about French gendered terms and Zoro trying to suss out if Sanji’s into men and I had some thoughts and oops now i wrote a thing so here you go:
In the early days Zoro drives himself nuts trying to figure out if Sanji bats for his team too or not. He listens in intently whenever the conversation steers the cook towards talk of his past dalliances, but, just his luck, none of the words used indicate their gender. And there ain’t no fucking way in hell he’s asking him or anyone on the crew directly, lest they immediately understand how bad he has it for the stupid cook.
He bides his time, surely someday he’ll slip up and mention something about the people he’s slept with, right? And sure enough one day, at a feast, a drunken Usopp starts asking what people’s types are. His face still schooled into a nonchalant, neutral expression, he does his best to hide how desperately he waits for Sanji to speak up about his type, only to once again be met with more general terms about people- someone with a kind heart, dependable, an equal… he’s so concentrated on trying to pick out any gendered terms he doesn’t notice the weird look Nami throws his way at each new descriptor in Sanji’s list of desirable traits.
He’s always known Sanji speaks French, finding it endearing whenever the cook curses (even at him), whenever he goes into small little rants to himself, or the face he makes when he can only think of a word in French, rapidly snapping his fingers until it comes back to him. But it’s only when they get to a town where Sanji starts speaking to a vendor excitedly about his produce that he realizes just how much this thing, this endearing thing that’s always been there, truly affects him, and his face burns at how different the cook’s voice sounds when he actually speaks it, how enchantingly low and throaty the foreign syllables ring in his ears.
Attached to living another day, he decides that stealing a book from Robin is a bad idea, and resigns himself to ask her directly for a favour. He swallows his pride and asks if she can lend him a French learning book and a dictionary, curious as to whether he can learn it a bit, and understand whatever the hell Sanji keeps cursing and muttering about around him, and what kinds of insults he’s been throwing his way. With her ever mysterious smile plastered on her face, a chain of Robin’s arms retrieve two books from her library and hand them to him. “Do come to me if you have any questions, Mr. Swordsman. My French is pretty good if I do say so myself.”
He’s out of the room, red as a beet, before she even finishes that sentence.
Learning the curse words comes to him unsurprisingly quickly given how often he hears a litany of « putain de merde », « fait chier! » and « enfoiré! » spilling from the blonde’s distracting mouth.
He’s very happily surprised when he learns that French is apparently a heavily gendered language- and that he can glean someone’s gender just from whether the adjectives applied to the subject are masculine or feminine. Now if the stars aligned and the cook would talk about his love life in French…
Zoro starts by going through the basic first chapters, taking great pains to hide and quickly dissimulate it in his haramaki anytime someone walks in on him- especially the witch. It definitely changes his usual routine on his watch in the crows nest, he muses to himself.
Weeks, months pass, and he advances further in the lessons, his vocabulary slowly growing, while he often goes to his dictionary for the more… colorful insults Sanji throws his way. He never says a word of French himself, not knowing how he could even justify knowing any without looking suspicious, and pretty sure his pronunciation would be way off anyways. But he starts to really enjoy it, being able to understand even a tenth of the things Sanji thinks he can say without the crew (save Robin) understanding.
And then Saobaody happens. And now he doesn't have time to think about learning French, not if he wants to get strong enough. Not if he wants to protect his crew.
He's at the table with Mihawk and Perona when his mentor asks for the salt (Passez moi le sel, s'il vous plait), and he executes himself without thinking. A quiet settles over the room and he looks up to see those intense red eyes boring into him, unnerving as ever.
"You speak French?"
"Not really," he grumbles, not wanting more excuses to think of the shitty cook, and his shitty cooking, and his stupid curly brow.
"Then you will. Consider this a natural continuation of my trying to beat some manners into your brutish mind."
Two years later, and he can't wait for dartbrow to show up. His pronunciation may still be shit, but he can't wait to use his newfound skill to his advantage.
With his now solidified grasp of the language, he slowly begins to understand that what he at first though was a mistake on his part- that he must’ve missed a part of a sentence, or mixed up some words- was not an error at all. It turns out, some of the French things that Sanji yells at him aren’t insults at all.
In fact… they’re sometimes downright complimentary.
And that's definitely a problem for Zoro, who now not only needs to keep pretending that he doesn’t know what Sanji is saying, but needs to pretend he doesn’t understand it when Sanji screams at him that he has a “stupidly pretty face” or that his “tits are even bigger than Nami’s and how is that even fair” . He doesn't know what to make of it.
And then one day… the stars align.
It’s another post battle party, and the cook has been drinking a bit more than usual, a tightly gripped glass of wine in his left hand, a cigarette in his right. Zoro is nursing his very own barrel of Ale when he hears the conversation turn to more gossipy topics, as it usually does the further into the night they are.
“Chopper was really into that nurse on Zou, wasn’t he?” Usopp starts to poke fun at the crew’s youngest member, laughing as the reindeer turns all red and tries to deny it.
“I mean it makes sense that she’d be his type! Right Nami?”
Nami nods at him, grinning wickedly. “Yeah, not all of us can be into rich little blonde girls can we?”
“You’re right, some of us are into rich blue-haired princesses,” he shoots back.
"At least I had the balls to do something about it before I left her island-"
Zoro is already tuning them out when Sanji sits down next to Robin just a few feet away, across from him and the campfire, his tongue loosened from a few too many refills and unconsciously reverting to his native tongue.
"Ils ont de la chance, ces deux là." he gestures to Usopp and Nami. (They're lucky, these two.)
Robin smiles at the cook, wordlessly prompting him to continue his thoughts.
"Qu'est ce que je donnerais pour pouvoir avoir quelque chose de plus qu'un coup d'un soir." Sanji sighs wistfully, lighting his cigarette. (What I wouldn't give to have something more than a one night stand.")
Robin chuckles. "Ne sont-ils pas satisfaisants?" (Are they not satisfying?)
At this point Zoro has tuned everything out, intensely focused on hearing what the blonde has to say, and not at all feeling a small churn of jealousy in his stomach for whoever shared Sanji's bed. His heart initially skips a beat at the plural masculine pronoun ('ils') used by Robin before remembering its actual neutrality in this context, as it's referring to the ""one night stands", a masculine word. Damnit. French is so dumb.
"Tu sais bien que je ne dirais jamais de mal à propos des belles demoiselles qui ont bien voulu m'accorder ne serait-ce qu'un baiser ou une étreinte. J'ai de la chance rien que d'avoir pu exister en leur présence."
(You very well know I'd never say a bad word about any of the beautiful ladies who've been kind enough to give me even a kiss or an embrace. I'm lucky just to have existed in their presence.)
Zoro feels his heart drop, a heavy feeling settling in his stomach. He's always known the pervert cook has been into women. Why was this confirmation hitting him the way it was? His eye darts up at his two crewmates, confirming that only Robin has noticed his eavesdropping. She opens her mouth to say something but Sanji continues, the glow of the flames dancing against his flushed skin beautifully.
"Et dans mon état normal tu sais que, par respect pour les sensibilités d'une dame, je ne te divulge pas beaucoup de détails sur ceux qui font l'affaire le temps d'une nuit. "
(And in my normal state you know that, out of respect for a lady's sensibilities, I don't divulge many details about those who do the trick for a night.)
Ceux. That's a masculine word for "those", isn't it? Zoro shakily takes another sip of his drink.
The archeologist's smile widens. "Oh, ne te fait pas de soucis pour mes sensibilités. Je brûle d'envie d'en savoir plus, et ne m'épargne pas les détails..."
(Oh, please don't worry about my sensibilities. I'm burning to know more, and don't spare me the details...)
"Je ne suis que ton humble serviteur...si ça peut te faire plaisir" (I'm but your humble servant…if it pleases you). Sanji's cheeks seem a tad more flushed than before. "En vrai ce n'est pas qu'ils ne sont pas satisfaisants...c'est qu'il ne sont jamais... assez."
(It's not that they're not satisfying…it's that they're never...enough.)
"Ah? Et que recherches tu? Qu'est ce qui serait..."assez"?"
(Ah? And what are you looking for? What would be… "enough"?)
The cook exhales another cloud of smoke, and nervously looks around. His eyes settle on Zoro, and indecision flits across his eyes for a second before continuing. Zoro can feel his gaze, can almost make out the deliciously unfocused expression on the blonde's face in his peripheral vision as he continues speaking French. His heart feels like it might beat out of his ribcage.
"Lui." (Him.)
Zoro forgets how to breathe.

Hey! Coming from ur Wattpad here! And I love your work! so umm... could you do a Robin Arellano x fem Reader? So like after he fights Moose, Moose gets angry and he decides to take his anger out on the reader. So like he beats us up and when it's over, we try to avoid Robin but after he ends up finding out and he takes care of us, but let's say that Moose will have a little problem the next day. OH and can you make it so the reader and Robin are dating?
Enjoy <3
Tumblr media
[Robin Arellano]
He Got What He Deserves
Moose Kavinsky had a horrible habit of shit talking people who were far better at fighting than him. As a result, it was fairly often he would find himself beat up. However, it’s as if his ego gets in the way of him ever learning a lesson, and he repeats the cycle. It goes as so:
1. Moose talks shit because he’s bored.
2. Moose gets his ass handed to him.
3. Moose talks shit because he’s embarrassed
4. Moose gets his ass handed to him, again.
5. Repeat.
Most often, he was smart enough to at least choose someone weaker than him- and then maybe he might stand a chance (rarely). However, his dumbass had picked a fight with Robin this morning, and everyone knows, you do not fuck with Robin Arellano.
He had been babbling some nonsense about Robin thinking he’s all that and how he’s apparently full of shit. You know what they say- you manifest the things you speak out loud, so be careful with what you say. The universe seemed adamant to get this across to Moose one way or another, and made it so Mr. Bandanna Boy himself happened to be walking up right behind him at the exact moment he was talking shit.
You practically cringed to yourself listening to what he was saying, and silently hoped for your boyfriends sake that he didn’t hear it. He really couldn’t afford to get caught up in another fight being on the verge of suspension as it is. Alas, the universe had other plans, and in mere seconds, Robin went from holding your hand to smashing his own into Moose’s face.
You knew better than to jump in and stop it. That was never the type of girlfriend you were. Robin’s business was his business, and you weren’t gonna get in the way; even if you didn’t always feel it was necessary.
Plus, you quite liked being the one he turns to when he needs patching up.
However, unlike you who stays out of Robin’s issues- letting him handle them as he pleases and only stepping in if you feel he wants or needs you to- he had a bad habit of not reciprocating that energy and making all your problems his own. He insists on handling them the way he handles his, even though you constantly fret over it and insist he just let you do your own thing. (Your own thing being turning a cheek to it, hence his insistence to handle it for you.)
This would certainly cause issues for you today.
Just as you had suspected, Robin ended up getting caught in the process of nearly pulverizing Moose’s face. He was dragged away to the office, but of course not before jogging over to give you a peck on the lips and a cheesy smile.
So, while you were walking back to class with a dazed smile- giggling to yourself about your hot headed boyfriend, Moose had cornered you.
With no where to hide and no boyfriend to protect you, all you could do was lay there and take the beating he had issues you. Not only was it embarrassingly dehumanizing, it was painful. Really really painful. He left multiple angry red spots all over your body, without a doubt destined to become bruises, split your lip, and discolored your cheekbone.
Afterwards, you literally had to lay their, shuddering and trying to catch your breath from the amount of pain you felt.
Though your brain was foggy from the beat down, you could focus on one thing and that was: what the hell are you gonna tell Robin? You needed time to figure it out. You didn’t want him to worry about you, and you definitely didn’t want him to be suspended if he wasn’t already.
So, you’ve been avoiding him all day. Because some how, some way, he wasn’t yet suspended for his previous fight with Moose. Just your luck.
You stuck to wearing your hoodie up all day, and removing the bandanna had given you to wear around your wrist. Without that very distinguishable feature, Robin was practically hopeless when it came to finding you.
Hopeless indeed.
He had just spent the majority of his day in search of you, utterly confused by your disappearance and increasingly frustrated over it.
Until now, when he sees an all too familiar stature stood across Finney at his locker.
“Just please, Finn!” You beg with a desperate expression. “You’ve gotta invite him over to study today. He cannot see me like this.”
Finney looks incredibly uncomfortable by your request, nervously avoiding eye contact with you, “I don’t know…this doesn’t seem like a good idea. Robin’s gonna find out eventually and he’s gonna be really mad if he knows I lied to him. Hell, if he finds out I helped you lie to him.”
“No he won’t! I swear. I’m gonna tell him when things have cooled off a bit, ya know?” You explain insistently, noticing the way his eyes drift behind you and widen. “What?”
Finney hurriedly shuts his locker door, “um, I should go! I’ll talk to you later, (y/n)!”
You blink in confusion, watching him scurry away down the hall, “b-but, Finn! Wait-“
“Where the hell have you been all day?”
You freeze at the familiar voice, suddenly realizing why Finney was taking off in such a hurry. With no where left to turn, you very slowly pivot around to face him.
Robin’s face is crinkled with annoyance, though that quickly disappears upon seeing your face.
“What happened to your face?!” He frantically reaches forward to pull your hoodie down before gently placing a hand on your chin and tilting your head around to exam the wounds. “Who the fuck did this to you?!”
“N-No one! I slipped-“
He gives you a disbelieving look that shuts you right up. “That’s some bullshit. Don’t try to lie to me again. We both know you suck at it. So, what really happened?”
You sheepishly chuckle, playing with the tips of your hair. “Um…will you walk me home first? I’ll tell you there.”
He squints his eyes in hesitation, boring down at you with an unmoving stare before slowly nodding. Then, he reaches behind you into the side pocket of your backpack and pulls out the bandanna he had given you to wear around, then ties it around your wrist.
“Never take it off in school,” he quietly demands before leaving his hand into yours and guiding you out of the school and towards your house.
The walk there is silent, and every time you glance at Robin he seems to be deep in thought about something, so you refrain from interrupting him. When you finally make it into your house, he drags you up the stairs and straight into your bathroom where you’re then made to sit on the edge of your counter and watch as he rummages your cabinets for supply.
“Robin, it’s really not even that bad,” you insist, trying to get him to drop the sour expression.
“Shh,” is all he responds, still focused on finding what he needs.
After gathering everything, he begins to clean each of your wounds- placing various bandages, bandaids, and pads over everything. Along with a healthy dollop of Neosporin.
You try to keep still despite feeling the urge to shake your leg with anticipation about what you plan to tell him.
“Sorry,” he apologizes, sensing your nervous behavior and assuming it’s because of his lack of delicacy when treating your wounds, “I’m not as good at this as you. This is usually the other way around.”
You shake your head, “no, no. It’s not that.”
“Then?” He raises a brow, securing your last bandage.
“I don’t want you to be mad at me,” you explain shakily.
He furrows his brows in confusion. “Mad at you? Why the hell would I be mad at you? I’m mad at the dickhead who did this shit. Speaking of- who was it?”
You swallow the lump forming in your throat, reaching out to take his cheeks in your hands and force him to look into your eyes. “Don’t do anything stupid.”
He huffs, “I’m not making any promises.”
You sigh, looking down while chuckling but keeping your hands on his cheeks. “Moose Kavinsky. Pretty sure he was just pissed and trying to get back at you through me.”
You feel him tense up, almost trembling from what you assume is anger. When you look back into his eyes, you confirm the emotion.
“I’m gonna put that motherfucker in the hospital,” he growls in pure vexation.
You nervously chuckle, “please don’t. I really would like to graduate with my boyfriend.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t get caught.”
“Robin!” You frown, letting your hands fall back onto your lap.
He smiles lightly, attempting to lighten your mood despite his seething.
“What? I’m serious! I won’t get caught!” He assures, moving himself to stand between your legs. “A little trust?”
You roll your eyes. “I trust that you’re a dumbass.”
He laughs, “a dumbass who loves you.”
You him with an entertained smile, leaning forward to kiss him softly.
He returns your kiss, nearly forgetting all about whatever he was angry about before. Of course, he doesn’t. He spends the night taking care of you and distracting you from the soreness of your body, but the next morning he’s gone without a trace- leaving a simple note to meet him where you always do before school.
You do so and walk up suspiciously, noticing new wounds on his face the closer you get.
“Hey! How’d you sleep? Miss me?” He grins teasingly, leaning forward to place a kiss on your lips.
You accept, but pull away rather quickly to get a better look at the sudden wounds on his face. “What the hell happened to your face?”
He grins, shrugging innocently. “I handled things.”
“Oh god,” you grumble out, making him laugh.
Then, you both reach out to hold hands as you walk towards the school entrance, making your way towards Finney’s locker.
Upon seeing you both, he smiles in relief- glad he didn’t have to get caught up in a lie and it all worked out.
“Hey, guys! Did you hear about Moose? Apparently someone landed him in the hospital and he’s not snitching,” Finney spills, excited to share the gossip.
You turn to Robin with wide eyes, but he looks totally relaxed.
“He got what he deserves,” he hums, turning to kiss you on the cheek.

so some time ago, someone asked me to do meta about a scene in Injustice and i wanted to revisit that scene with the scene from Year Zero in mind. and then i ended up getting deeply into injustice damian, his relationship with his two awful dads, and it’s kind of a mini character essay?
so! here’s a warning for: tyrannical totalitariam regimes, child abuse, abusive fathers, emotional manipulation, evil superman, character death & also random he-man. please note that this is entirely about injustice and its characters, which are not a reflection on their mainstream counterparts.
there’s tension between damian and bruce from the get-go in injustice, and we’re never really told why. if we take cues from the game (though that entire scene doesn’t make sense) then it’s because bruce didn’t save jason, which fits in with my reordered robin theory in which tim and jason were switched, and jason has only recently died.
now, we don’t know whether jason is running around as red hood right now or not. but i’m inclined to say he isn’t, as his injustice 2 ending makes a big deal of him becoming red hood. and damian is close with jason in injustice 2, close enough that jason listens when damian tells him that he’s a lot more than bruce thinks he is and drops the shitty batman costume. close enough that during the (extremely weird, extremely out of alignment with the comic) scene in injustice 2 where damian betrays bruce for clark, jason is the name damian throws at him with the most vehemence. regardless of the robin ordeer, bruce’s failure to save jason is seems to be an incredibly sore point between them.
Tumblr media
so it’s interesting that bruce is already counting damian out before injustice even starts. he’s comparing damian to jason - someone who he apparently no longer considers part of his legacy.
the kicker is: damian in injustice is actually probably the most morally centered version of himself. he shows open compassion and care for other people more often than he does in most of the mainstream runs. damian’s sense of right and wrong is solid, but what he wants is to break the cycle that gotham is trapped in. which from his perspective, is something bruce doesn’t seem to want to do.
injustice’s version of bruce is someone who truly believes that the ends justify the means - which means he’s apt to do some heinous things to people until they see his side of things. he seems to view people questioning as an act of betrayal, so instead of ever explaining himself he resorts to things like installing viruses in cyborg, kidnapping hawkgirl and replacing her, beating allies within an inch of their life - all of it is fine to him so long as they’re not dead.
but it’s not fine to damian.  damian is constantly horrified at the lengths bruce will go to.
damian is afraid of his father.
so, this is about a specific scene.  let’s get to that scene. its just important to note the difference between them, and emphasize that he’s not going with any intent to fight. if he was going to do that, he wouldn’t be doing this:
Tumblr media
or respond like this:
Tumblr media
or this:
Tumblr media
he’s there to make amends, or at least try to. he still loves his father and he wants to be forgiven, and this is something that will carry on ten years later in injustice 2. damian made the choice to oppose bruce’s controlling nature but damian didn’t choose to abandon him and the bat family permanently. that choice was made for him. damian wants to come home.
and he’s terrified of his father. i cannot stress that enough. bruce at this point has already shown that he knows how to hurt his closest friends if they oppose him.
damian is a highly trained fighter, but he’s also a  thirteen year old boy who knows he can’t overpower a man twice his size and weight.
and bruce?
Tumblr media
bruce’s entire argument really hinges on ‘you, my thirteen year old son, didn’t take my side in this argument’. because, i have to put this in bold, the league was not executing the criminals they were removing from arkham. they were just transferring them to a more secure facility. something which is actually sorely needed, especially given what has just happened to metropolis. arkham isn’t fit to house them. and as far as damian sees it, bruce doesn’t like it because it’s removing an element of his control.
now, bruce isn’t wrong about how things will escalate.
but damian’s not wrong about his motivation here.  i think there’s a conversation to be had about how bruce’s methods in trying to stop the regime actually drove it to further and further extremes. bruce never tries to talk to clark - or anyone, really. he just starts playing mind games to make them do what he wants.
it harkens back to the conversation bruce and dick have in the batplane. that bruce doesn’t talk to people, he doesn’t explain himself. he’s either right or you’re wrong and he won’t explain his stance. there is never room for debate. he’ll just stop talking and leave until you agree.  there is no option where he sits and listens to an open and honest dialogue, no scenario where he entertains that he might be in the wrong or maybe things aren’t black and white.
and that’s why injustice bruce is not a good guy.
even on prime earth, damian had to bend over backwards to prove to bruce that he wasn’t a monster. it was damian who spent months digging through the sewers for martha’s pearls. damian who had to prove he was capable of loving titus. damian who constantly had to show that he was capable of empathy and thinking of others - bruce did none of the heavy lifting in that father-son relationship, he made damian climb the entire hill and still continues to put little effort into it.
and injustice bruce is even less empathetic and expressive than prime bruce.
which is why you get a confrontation like this:
Tumblr media
this goes beyond dick’s accident and ties back into what clark said about bruce not tending to his son’s who are grieving because they lost friends in metropolis.  damian’s fed up with never meeting bruce’s expectations. but more than that, he’s fed up with his feelings coming second to bruce’s.
bruce has already made a judgement on who and what damian is. damian has the potential to be dangerous and requires work to fix, and so he’s not interested in getting to know him beyond that. he tells dick that he’s “worried about  damian being seduced by darkness” but never talks to damian himself with him about it.
but clark has looked at damian and and decided that damian is good. damian has problems, clark can admit that and does, but damian is good. like bruce himself.
and ultimately why when dick dies, clark is the one that reaches out to him because he sees damian for what he is: grieving child who just made a terrible mistake. it was an accident. damian didn’t mean for this to happen. meanwhile, bruce feels as though he was proven right. damian was dangerous and now his real son is dead. bruce will later admit, once he stops trying to manipulate damian, that damian was dead to him the moment dick died.
going back to year zero for a minute, they subtly show that damian is doing his best to be like bruce. baby damian idolizes his father. so i imagine a lot of bruce’s own feelings towards damian stem from self-hatred. from bruce seeing himself in his son and not liking the reflection it forces him to confront. injustice bruce projects a great deal of his own insecurities and shortcomings onto his youngest. damian is his worst what-if.
Tumblr media
even though damian doesn’t deal with his grief the way bruce does. there are similarities, he puts his feelings into his fists and hits. just like bruce. but unlike bruce, and most likely because of dick, he does try to communicate. come injustice 2 he even talks about his feelings.
that doesn’t justify any of the violent outbursts. and he has a lot of them. he has significant issues with controlling his anger and struggles with lashing out, verbally and physically. it both worsens and improves as he gets older.
damian knows that he’s more than his grief, his loss, his anger. he’s also compassionate and capable of incredible feats of kindness. we see that in the flashback chapter in injustice 2. people aren’t pawns for damian, they aren’t a means to assuage his own guilt and validate himself as a good person. he wants to be good for those people.
damian’s relationship with heroism isn’t built on an intrinsic need for control or power, nor is it a means of validating his self worth.
people just need him. they’re suffering.  and he wants to be there for them.
but again, we’re not there yet.
so, alfred reaches out to touch damian. damian asks him repeatedly to let go. when alfred doesn’t, damian tries throwing him off, not realizing how much strength he now possesses.
Tumblr media
damian  has a thing about being touched when he’s wound up tightly. it almost always ends with him lashing out at someone. which, tying back into why he felt comfortable coming back here, probably goes into his expectation that he’s going to get the lights knocked out of him. because again, damian did not go to the cave to fight or hurt anyone. the pill is entirely for his own defense.
from what we know of damian’s childhood in both prime and injustice, violence is the expected retaliation for misbehavior. toeing out of line is grounds for getting the shit beaten out of you, and while things should be different here....
Tumblr media
from how bruce reacts he’s not wrong to expect it.  note that bruce dodesn’t run to alfred to see if he’s okay, he goes after damian for hurting him. it’s damian who runs to alfred after he’s thrown bruce away from him.
( granted, yes, he threw bruce into the penny and it almost crushes alfred )
damian apologizes and he means it.  alfred’s first question is to ask for bruce.
Tumblr media
“”hawkgirl”” intervenes to try to end this fight before it can escalate further.
Tumblr media
damian deduces that this isn’t hawkgirl and blows some stuff up.  bruce calls after him probably - not to have a serious heart to heart with him about what just happened, or what happened in arkham, but to try to manipulate him into taking bruce’s side or in the very least stop his ruse from being uncovered.
this is a theme moving forward. bruce will dangle forgiveness in front of damian, but only when it benefits him and can be used to control him. eventually he’ll stop and will use the guilt he knows damian feels to wound him.
and here’s the second theme it introduces: damian is scared shitless of his father. he’s not afraid of bruce’s violence, as after this he charges straight for him time and time again, but he is utterly terrified of the lengths bruce will go to get his way.
Tumblr media
this is also where he takes dick’s suit. i think this was his way of telling bruce that he didn’t deserve to use dick’s memory the way he uses his parent’s death - as justification for what he does.  this comes up in injustice 2 later down the road, damian will bring up that bruce uses his pain to justify how he brutalizes the people around him. damian does the same thing -- but we also see damian grappling with his conscience about it. he wants to be better. he doesn’t want to be all his violence and loss.
back to the topic at hand, damian doesn’t do anything with dick’s suit. unlike bruce, damian doesn’t wear his grief and guilt in plain sight. he puts it in a box and doesn’t look at it, he covers the wounds with anger and as he gets older, develops a death wish and basically begins seeking a noble death in order to make up for what he’s done. it isn’t until dick passes the mantle to him in an attempt to steer him back on the right path that he even looks at it again.
damian isn’t the one that ended his relationship with bruce. bruce did. damian is very willing to reconcile if bruce genuinely wants it, but bruce doesn’t bother with damian outside of combat or when he needs something. damian actually keeps up visits with alfred, he gets him birthday presents, they meet up often and despite their opposing viewpoints, they get along just fine. damian even listens to what alfred says. he still loves his family.
Tumblr media
damian himself is a mess. this line resonates because damian, too, is afraid. afraid of bruce, afraid of being what bruce thinks he is. there’s only so far he can bury it under the anger.
by the next issue of year one, after the confrontation at the manor, damian’s discarded any notion that bruce is a good person or justified in anything he does. everything he says on this page is true.
Tumblr media
he’s not wrong. he’s more than bruce has even given him credit for being. injustice bruce sorts people into boxes impossible to climb out.  damian made his attempt at reconciliation and instead, found out that bruce has kidnapped and replaced one of his friends to spy on all the rest. in that split second when bruce came at at him, he saw the disgust and anger in his eyes. he’s seen how bruce sees him and wholeheartedly rejects it.
he doesn’t want to be bruce. he will not be bruce.
batman was supposed to be better than the league. it was supposed to be a new way. instead he just found a new, different means to brutalize and control, and a new way someone justifies causing harm. and he doesn’t want it.
this isn’t to say that damian is a saint. he’s a very flawed, very broken person. he went from one abusive parental situation, to another, to another, and has the damage to show for it. he’s got bad habits from all of them, many of which he isn’t aware of or doesn’t think are a problem.
but unlike his two dads, damian doesn’t close himself off to what he’s feeling completely, nor does he decide to rush towards external solutions for his pain. he’s, again, very aware that something is wrong. he doesn’t hold to his convictions the same way bruce or clark do, he questions.  he’s deeply unhappy with who he is and what he’s doing.
but damian is seeking answers using a very limited toolset, and there’s a very limited pool of people he can ask that won’t give him a biased answer or try to manipulate him for their own means. one of the people he confides in does just that.
the other gives him the honest truth.
his relationship with selina is fraught and she’s often one of the very nastiest people towards him, but it’s because of that  he ends up opening up to her. she isn’t going to bullshit him and just say what he wants to hear.
Tumblr media
and this is what makes damian different from them. both of them.
because he stops, because he questions, he’s still connected to reality. to his own humanity.
injustice’s bruce is a bruce that has quietly let his humanity die. he’s completely given over to the cold logic of batman and the idea that whatever he does to the people around him, no matter how morally dubious, is justified so long as it means protecting lives. he might not kill, but he really stops just short of that. he just doubles down on his beliefs and takes anyone who doesn’t agree with him as a traitor. he will go out of his way to rationalize how a largely guilty person is innocent (harleen) and how a largely innocent person is guilty (damian). and so he uses damian’s “betrayal” - ie, damian standing with clark instead of him - as justification for icing him out. that way he can ignore all the people who have reminded him time and time again that it was an accident.
bruce also can’t stand that damian won’t do what he says. bruce will ignore damian unless it benefits him. bruce will go on to frequently weaponize how badly damian wants forgiveness against him. there are multiple instances where he says “just do as i say and i’ll forgive you, son.”
and then in the next breath, he’ll tell damian that he “can’t forgive the deaths”, all the while he has harleen as his new sidekick.   it’s fine that harleen helped with the scheme to blow up metropolis, killed jimmy olsen, and countless others. it’s not fine that damian did something he did all the time to dick - something dick himself shrugged off, because the expectation for this behavior was that dick would catch the baton - and it ended in tragedy.
because harleen listens to him and damian doesn’t. bruce cuts damian neatly out of his life and only really cares about him again when he’s a corpse.
damian, meanwhile, never stops trying to earn bruce’s forgiveness. in the canonical bad end (or well a comic offshoot of the canon ending) damian essentially dies begging bruce to forgive him, admitting that he always cared. he launches an absolutely insane rescue mission to save his father from clark’s torture and it costs him his life.
( but it’s worth mentioning - it takes damian showing bruce an image of kara for bruce to acknowledge him. )
Tumblr media
even before this, damian was looking out for bruce in other ways. he was the reason selina got involved with the regime. because he offered her the chance to join and save bruce. damian’s anger towards bruce is less that he wants him dead, and more that bruce won’t stop unless he’s killed.
and damian is willing to kill him if bruce poses a threat to his ‘new’ family. he’s not going to watch bruce hurt the people he loves.
but his new father sucks just as much as his old one.
talia and bruce were more obviously abusive parents. they were controlling and sometimes asserted that control and obedience using physical violence and intimidation. in obvious ways you can point to and see abuse.
damian doesn’t recognize clark is using him until he sees clark discard kara, who should be everything to clark and is someone important to damian. before that, he has inklings that they’ve gone too far, but clark has been such a paragon of good that when he tells damian not to worry about it, he doesn’t. he hides all his darkness behind that  smile and tells damian he’s good and worthy of people loving him, that they’re saving people and they won’t let another metropolis happen. clark talks to him and still (seems to) accept him even when they disagree.
damian misses clark’s equally as abusive tendencies because they hidden under the guise of a fatherly concern.
Tumblr media
clark is manipulating him into divulging more than he wants to. a boundary damian set is being broken without damian even realizing it.  damian’s uneasy. his body language goes from very easy and relaxed to overtly uncomfortable and almost submissive. it’s also very subtle but clark actually rises higher off the ground to intimidate and loom over him.
Tumblr media
damian, who has only known bruce’s stormy silences in moments of disagreement, doesn’t recognize this for what it is.  clark doesn’t take the slight out on him. clark doesn’t stop talking to him because he dared to question.
instead, he loops an arm around damian and praises him, rewards him for being honest and makes it seem like this is an open dialogue and not an interrogation. which it is. i wouldn’t call it gaslighting, but i would call it lovebombing. damian doesn’t realize that there was anything off about the encounter, or if he does, he’ll tell himself he’s just being paranoid.
after all. this ended amicably, not with him standing alone wondering what he did wrong, or being thrown across the room. clark basically stops just shy of ruffling his hair and calling him sport.
he was rewarded for honesty. and so any discomfort he felt was imagined.
i think a thing that a lot of fans miss is that injustice’s damian is a forthright person. he doesn’t lie or deceive much, and later on it will bother him that he’s keeping secrets from kara for ‘the greater good’. he loathes that bruce does it and works hard to not fall into that trap. he wants to be honest. he’s glad when he’s rewarded for that honesty.
because injustice’s damian doesn’t want to be batman. he wants to be superman. he wants to be good.
but injustice’s superman is not a good man.
clark keep secrets, many terrible secrets, and often hurts people and justifies it to himself. he just hides it far better than bruce does.  clark is even more controlling and cruel, but he leans harder into his humanity and emotions to hide it. it’s easier to see bruce being cold and calculating and miss the way clark subtly uses what you want to get what he wants out of you. and you never really see it coming when he lashes out. he’ll apologize for it, of course, and if you’re not dead you’ll forgive him, because it’s clark. he didn’t mean it. right?
bruce manipulates overtly and grandly using intimidation, clark manipulates subtly using emotion. damian only recognizes one of these things when they happen.
so clark gives damian what he wants - a parent who loves him, someone he can talk to and even show a little vulnerability with - and then uses that against him.
the worst thing -  the very worst thing - is that bruce and clark love damian. he knows this. both seem to genuinely consider him their son. and he knows this.
in injustice vs motu, bruce snaps fully into awareness just as diana snaps damian’s neck. he’s awake just in time to watch his son die.    and when clark is brought onto the scene, clark falls to his knees and mourns damian and laments his role in driving him to this.
but they weaponize this parent-child bond he wants against him and each other. frankly, neither of them were very interested in him for who he was. nor for helping him be better and master his anger. damian’s body isn’t even cold before bruce uses it against clark, failing to acknowledge his own part in damian’s all too early demise.
he’s another chess piece on their board. one clark can use to wound bruce. one bruce can use to wound clark.
the person damian is when away from both of their influence is a more complete damian. he’s the very best of both of them.
the damian here is still curt and sometimes rude, but he laughs and bonds with the people around him. he values people’s freedom and seems to strive for honesty and communication. meaning no one is in his war to reclaim the world doesn’t want to be, and he makes no move without everyone knowing.
when he recruits adam,  he tells them their story and what they’ve gone through and gives adam the choice to join them or stay in eternia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway, all of this is to say that even all these years later, i continue to be so sad about injustice damian wayne.
edit:
now, there’s actually one other thing i want to bring up because i totally forgot about it.
so. issue 8 of injustice 2.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if we’re going with the idea of the reordered robin theory, which is what makes the most sense to me considering jason’s age and the friction between bruce and damian, this before jason dies. and if i’m wrong and the robins don’t have a different order, then this is before some enormous event that broke the slowly building trust.
there’s none of the undercurrent of hostility and distrust that shows up in year 0, which is immediately before year 1. we’re not given a timeframe for when this occurs, either, it’s just happier times.
but what’s really hard to ignore is that the dynamic between bruce and damian is completely different here. maybe tom taylor’s just settled more into writing the two of them, but i don’t think so. year zero comes after this.
he even acknowledges damian’s anger earlier in the chapter. but it’s less of a condemnation of his character and more a concern that he might not be ready to be on his own. alfred is the one advocating for caution, asking if he’s ready, bruce is the one saying yes, he is.
it’s a complete reversal.
and his trust is rewarded with a night of damian abandoning the “”mission”” he was given (get home from the furthest point of gotham in three hours) to help everyone along the way. which was the real goal all along, it was a test to see if damian’s compassion would win out over his want to win. and it does. bruce is proud of him.
so... what happened between them? what caused that shift?
i’m kind of worried we’re never going to know. like, i’m so glad that tom taylor is dc’s new golden boy and they’re just letting him build a million different aus. i buy every book he writes.
but also i’m dying because IJ2 was clearly planned to go on a lot longer than it did and i have questions that i know netherrealm doesn’t care about answering.

What if Marinette goes to GA and becomes friends with damian and are known as the chaos kids. The school gets used to them. The waynes need Damian one day and when they ask for him the reply is "At (area) doing (weird thing. Example: making pokemon statues out of waffles) with Mari" they get to said area they're gone and the fam has to keep asking people where he is and keep getting crazy replies. When they find him he's arguing with her about whether winnie the pooh's fav color is red or yellow
@coolrascalhoagienerd, well I had a good laugh when I saw this and where is the making of what I thought would have worked. I hope you enjoy.
When Damian entered the halls of Gotham Academy, the first thing he notice was the change in the usual dark atmosphere. It felt oddly kinder and more lighthearted. Everywhere he turns there are whispers featuring around the new girl that recently join the school.
It’s funny how the two met that very same day. She was running down the halls in a hurry as he was walking to his next class, one that he was particular care for. They bump into each other causing a standstill in the halls. Everyone wondered how the dark prince would react to the princess of sunshine. They expected a yelling match, instead they got the best and worst of alliance ever made.
Months passed since the blooming of Damian and Marinette’s friendship and not a single student could say that there weren’t surprised. The moment Marinette had Damian under her spell, she was able to make the stoic teen become his age. It started off small with a joke here and there, then it exploded into card games followed by video games. To this day, Damian swears that he’ll beat her at a shooting game at one point to which Marinette would respond with a laugh and an over the shoulder wink. The younger Wayne would swear that he has never blush a day in his life but the photographic proof on Marinette’s phone says otherwise.
The school soon became accustomed to being Daminette’s playground. At first the teachers were opposed to the idea but after seeing how slightly more open Damian has become with the of Sunshine, they slowly agreed to the idea of allowing the dark prince and his sunshine have less strict rules.
Which brings us to this moment, Marinette swings on a swing set while Damian practice his form with a katana. Don’t ask how he manage to get it past security.
“You know, maybe we should do something wild?” Marinette says looking up to the sky with a mischief smirk on her lips.
Damian doesn’t turn to her; he only sets the blade down to his side. “What do you have in mind?”
Marinette giggles uncontrollably.
Let’s just say that whatever Marinette had in mind would rule the yearbooks for years to come.
~~
Damian hiding his characteristic change at home was simple enough. A few death threats here and there, maybe sneaking out moments every so often. No one at the Wayne cared to pay any attention to it. It only came as shock when Damian left for school along the lines of being late. Alfred offered to take me to which Damian declined and got onto his “normal” motorcycle and speeds off.
“Does it seem that Damian is acting strange to you?” Richard “Dick” Grayson asks, pipping his down from the ceiling. He’s on the chandelier again. Poor Alfred, maybe he’ll dust the chandelier for him.
Tim walks in to with large mug in hand, no doubt filled to the brim with coffee. “Which one?” He asks taking a sip, bags are underneath his eyes.
“I do concur with Master Richard; the young master has been acting somewhat strange for quite a moment now” Alfred appears out of nowhere.
It wasn’t long before Jason manage to drag the head of the household from his lair into the mess that was slowly brewing in the main room. Alfred reprimands Jason for the uses of force as he hands Bruce Wayne a cup of coffee.
“Look, I can’t explain much, but we’re going to need Demon Spawn for something huge.” Jason says looking like a madman pulling Bruce by the arm.
“Uh, why would we need Little Bird?” Dick asks dropping onto the floor and twisting his body. “Not that I don’t mind getting Damian involved.”
“Look there’s no time to explain,” Jason facepalms and begins to push everyone towards the door despite the lack of proper wear they have on.
After one clothes change, a large of amount protest, the Wayne household now stands in front of the gates of Gotham Academy.
“Is it me or does this place look less you know Gotham-y and full of life?” Tim asks narrowing his eyes as he takes a long sip of a new cup of coffee that has been transfer into a to-go cup with Red Robin’s emblem.
“No, no, Timmy, I see it too.” Dick whispers as Jason struts past the gates and onto the school’s property.
Bruce sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose, “Come on, let’s go get your brother so Jason can stop being Jason.”
Tim shrugs before passing the gates himself with Dick following him.
Upon entering the school, they could immediately see that it was either passing period or free time for the students.
Bruce makes his way to the attendance, where Assistant Joyce resides sitting at the desk.
“Hello Joyce, I’m here pick up Damian. He has a, ah, dentist appointment this evening.” Bruce speaks hoping that she wouldn’t catch the lie he spoke of.
“Well Mr. Wayne, Damian is, uh…” Joyce turns to someone besides her. “Do you know where Damian Wayne would be at today?”
“Try the art room.” A feminine voice answers.
Joyce turns back to the Wayne family and smiles, “He should be at the art room, it’s down the hall to your right, you should not miss it. It’s in the only hallway that has a series of artwork posted in it. Before you go, please sign here so that we know to tell the teachers not to mark Damian absent today.”
Joyce hands Bruce a sign out sheet, to which the man signs and ushers his wards to go find his youngest.
“They’re so screwed.” The same feminine voice speaks causing Joyce to break out laughing.
Well, it took a total of four different locations for the men to find the youngest Wayne.
First, they went to the art room like Joyce’s co-worker told them to. They meet with a student that says that basically told them that Damian was playing Pokémon Go near the gym, apparently, he was trying to catch a legendary Pokémon that spawned there.
So, of course, after an awkward eye contact with one another, they walk to the gym. Once again Damian was there, but a different was. He told them that Damian was making ice sculptures out of ice cream at the cafeteria. The student then goes on to explain that Damian had some amazing skills with a knife.
Jason, with wide eyes, practically shouted at the student that he was crazy, and that Damian would never, and he means NEVER do something that stupid. The student just shrugs it off like it was an everyday occurrence. It was Dick that had to hold Jason back from thrashing the teen.
By the time they got to the cafeteria, it was damn near empty aside from a few students still eating. There were no signs of ice cream or the tools that would go into making a sculpture. Tim had to ask a few students to see if Damian was in here at some point in time. It’s the workers that answers the young CEO by telling him that Damian was here earlier making sculptures out of ice cream before handing it out to students. When asked with the question that has been slowly driving the four insane, the worker replies with “Upstairs racing on these old colorful scooter board down the halls.”
It was at that moment when Tim wanted nothing to but to have a mental break down, and he would have if it wasn’t for Bruce holding him up.
So, they quickly found themselves on the second level of the school. There was no sight of Damian Wayne, though there were wheel tracks smudged into the flooring.
“Are you kidding me?” Jason shouts out into the ceiling. Thankfully, there were no students in the halls to hear it. Well that might have been the case if it wasn’t for a teacher to open their door and shush the male.
“Angel, you are desperately in the wrong here. The bear only wears one color, so it has to the color red.” It was then that they finally hear the voice of the person they have been looking for. Looking over the staircase, they find a hidden cove/nook like area and siting in it is none other than Damian Wayne himself, but he’s not alone.
“I’m telling you, Dami, Pooh’s favorite color is yellow.” The female answers before taping her fingers as makes her point. “He loves honey, which is by default a yellow color.”
“I disagree, Winnie the Pooh has been drawn on numerous of occasions with red items not yellow.” He counters.
This was not happening. Tim’s along with Jason’s exe stopped working and now they were frozen in place. The most deadliest of Wayne’s is arguing about Winnie the motherfucking Pooh’s favorite color. Bruce has no words as Dick pulls out his phone to record the whole ordeal.
Legend has it that Damian never went home that day despite being excused from classes. When he had return home, his family never spoke to him, still in shock at what they just encountered. It wasn’t until a couple of months later that Damian had introduce the family to Marinette and all hell breaks loose.

Dickinette - Day 1 civil war
Marinette and Dick grew up together at Haly’s circus with Mari’s mother being a tightrope walker and her father being the ‘strong man’. She grew up learning to tightrope walk from her mother just as Dick learnt trapeze from his parents. And a game they used to play during training was Dick swooping down on trapeze without notice and picking her up mid walk. The two of them found this hilarious and both of their parents watched with exasperation at their antics. The two of them were inseparable, sneaking off to play with the circus animals or climb anything they good to get to a high place and watch the daily working of the troupe.
But then everything changed when Dick’s parents fell and Dick was taken away by that billionaire even though Marinette’s parents had said that Dick could stay with them.
Of course as a travelling circus, Mari didn’t get to stay in Gotham for too long, but the troupe does come back twice a year and Bruce makes sure to let the kids meet up as often as they want while they’re here.
Then years later their initial separation the circus returns, but this time there is no Marinette. Dick is especially distressed since no one seems to think twice about her disappearance, not even her parents. So with the help of Batman Dick begins to investigate, but ultimately they have no luck and find no answers about what happened to his childhood friend.
After Dick goes from Robin to Nightwing, he’s got younger brothers and sisters and his family is much bigger than he ever thought it would be. They love to tease him about being overprotective or hovering too much but he just cant stand the thought that any more of his important people could just disappear out of his life if he loses sight of them. Bruce understands, but thankfully he’s kept it to himself.
But then the Court of owls comes to their attention, and he really would have written them off as just another cult organisation for them to deal with if bruce hadn’t caught one and declared that the man was genetically related to him. Even worse was when the dead looking body fixed itself and fought its way free.
Then he almost forgets about it until the city is overrun with the almost undying soldiers. His family were the prime targets, and no matter how much he wished to go help them he kind of had his hands full dealing with the two that had apparently been assigned to him. Cobb again and a smaller and apparently younger talon who didn’t speak.
The worst thing about fighting talons is that no matter how much damage you did, the only one that felt the pain was you, but eventually he landed a well placed hit to the females mask and was left stunned for a moment as a familiar face was revealed, granted she was older now, her eyes were the dull colour of tarnished gold and the once happy face was white as bone with blue veins stretching like cracks across it.
“mari-“
Of course she didn’t answer. There wasn’t even a slicker of recognition in her eyes as she took another swipe at him with her knives. All the while Cobb taunted him, telling him that it was his fault that his friend had become this monster. About how he was supposed to be the one that was chosen, but when he wasn’t at the circus, the court looked at other potential candidates.
“I protested of course, it was supposed to be your destiny to join me in service to the court. But as talons our words are worth very little to the Grandmaster. But she’s been such a good learner. Such a dangerous little thing she’s shaping up to be once we killed those pesky emotions. After we’re done with you, she’ll go work on the rest of your rag tag vigilante family.”
The thought of others using his friend to hurt his family infuriated him more and he continued to fight, trying desperately to snap Marinette back to reality. But eventually he was forced up to the rooftop, the two of the watching from a slightly lower vantage point while Cobb continued with his taunts.
Dick checked his surroundings and prayed that what he was about to do would work. He shot off his grapple and leapt, swooping down past Cobb and snatching Marinette up by the waist. The two of them zipped through the air. She fought him during the initial drop then went slack during the upswing, it was almost like they were kids again. Then reality hit them, then again it was probably the glass window they had crashed through.
Dick sat up from where he had rolled and watched marinette’s still body for a moment breathing in relief when she twitched. Then came his name and moments later he had his arms full of crying Marinette as she panicked over the things she’d done under the Court’s control.
He decides to take her back to the manor, and helps her downstairs, only to find Cobb waiting for them at the entrance. And suddenly Marinette is off to attack the man, fighting him down the street for a time before throwing him into an icecreamery. Shouting for Dick to lock them in the freezer and that he can thaw her out later if her really wants to.
Dick of course is confused but trusts her. So he ends up spending most of the night sitting on a counter wondering how he’s going to get them back home without cobb waking up. Its early in the morning with the store owner shows up and Dick ends up borrowing his refrigerated truck and dragging the two home.
He really hopes that Alfred wouldn’t mind too much that he stuck a person in the deep freezer.
But with that problem out of the way he goes about ‘ thawing’ Marinette, setting her on fluffy blankets in his bathroom and hitting on the heat lights and grabbing his hair dryer to help speed things along.
Eventually a finger twitched, and he’s felt this before. The complete and total terror and relief, he felt it when Jay died and then showed up as red hood years later, when Bruce disappeared and was thought dead only to have ended up in some unknown time, or when Damian was killed and was resurrected.
Then a while later her eyes flutter open, her eyes now alive and dancing as a smile graces her lips. And he puts the hairdryer aside and wraps the multitude of blankets around her and guides her shivering form through the manor to one of the many lounges, cranked the heating, chose some movies and sat there with her until the others got home.
No doubt Bruce would have endless questions. But for now be had his best friend back. Not that she was quite the same as she used to be. But she was back all the same.

i'm lying (because i love you)
saw this post by @draculcid a few days ago and couldn’t get it out of my mind. then proceeded to write 1k words of a fic but then my motivation to write left because of school and then i suddenly got a burst of inspiration last night and i'm almost probably gonna polish it up for ao3 later but for now, here's a continuation of this beautiful headcanon tw: abuse, bruises, billy went back home to neil's after star court bcuz it works for the purpose of the story. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
So billy drives max over to steve's every few days because steve's place is the unofficial meet up for the party's D&D nights. and max comes in and she's angry and brash and everyone is like ??? and mike yells at lucas to calm his girlfriend down and max yells back that she's not lucas' girlfriend anymore and lucas is like wait whaaaa???
and its one of those nights when steve’s really tired and every loud noise is making him jumpy and anxious and he just can’t deal with them today. So ofc he yells at the boys before turning to max. Goes to yell at her too but she’s hunched over and folded in on herself and this is a different type of angry than usual. It’s laced with fear this time. And she looks up at him when he asks her what’s wrong, but nothing comes out, so el moves to sit next to her. Squeezes her hand before turning to steve with those round eyes of her and says “old billy”
And that news just...hits him for some reason. Settles uncomfortably in the pit of his stomach because it’s been a few months since Starcourt and Billy’s lost all that Californian thrill that he used to parade around town with.
And steve used to see billy often after it first happened because he was max’s designated driver, so his name appeared on the hospital guest sheet almost as often as Max’s, and ten times as more than Neil’s. And it’s not like he and billy really ever spoke. More of a head nod at the beginning and end of each visit while max’s rambles filled the space between them.
But once Billy healed enough to leave, he just went back to Neil’s because apparently the government doesn’t care too much about a traumatized teenager in a small town in the middle of bumfuck indiana leaking military secrets to the press.
And Steve hated the idea of Billy going back to Neil’s because, well, because he had just gotten used to seeing Billy without the bruises, and he realized he kinda liked seeing the blues of billy’s eyes sparkling during his rare moments of happiness. And he definitely wasn’t ready to see the old bruises start to make their appearance again.
And yet. For whatever reason, his worry never seemed to come true. The bruises never returned and everything was normal.
But months passed and steve didn’t have a reason to be around billy anymore which meant he went from “billy hargrove who steve saw almost every day” to “max’s step brother who drives her around” and steve hates to admit it but he misses the old billy. The one who would sometimes stare at steve from his bed when he thought steve wasn't watching. But Steve was always aware of billy. Has been from the moment he first set foot in town.
So when he hears this news, that “old Billy” has returned, he hates it because old billy was angry and scared all the time, and old billy didn’t look at him like he was important. Like he saw something else in him. Like he was worth it.
So steve nods at max. Tells the kids he’ll be back, and musters up what little courage he has left before trudging outside. Thinks about how if Robin were here, she’d tell him to turn around and go back inside. Let Billy be the angsty teen he tries so hard to come across as by himself. But his mind and nerves don’t seem to agree on logic too much these days, so he goes anyways.
And when he finally gets to the camaro, billy straightens up as if he wasn’t just hunched over, head in his hands, and breathing heavily. Looking exactly like his sister, not sister. And billy looks up at steve with a bored expression. Answers really dryly like he’d rather be anywhere than here cuz he’s cool for this.
But steve can see the bruises decorating the side of his face. Can see the unblemished skin on billy’s knuckles, and steve just knows. Old billy.
So steve, shaking and scared himself, finally works up the guts to ask billy to come inside. Says something like the kids just started a new D&D game and it won’t be done for a while, so billy might as well come inside so he doesn't freeze even though billy has always run hot.
And billy stays silent, narrows his eyes at steve, which makes steve’s heart beat in his chest because the knows they’ve moved past that night in november, but this is old billy and old billy is really good with his fists and steve doesn’t want to be on the receiving end of that again.
But eventually, billy agrees. Says something snarky like “i’ve always wanted to see how the other half lives.” Shuts the camaro off and opens the door, hitting steve on the leg because he’s still a boy who doesn’t know how to properly accept love and care with his words.
Inside, the party barely spares them a look, but he knows they’re doing it out of a respect thing because max is still frowning and closed off. And billy sees her, starts off ignoring her as he walks around touching things. But his eyes keep finding her and she keeps shivering because she still has some of that california blood in her. And eventually he walks over. Yells at her for leaving her jacket at home before yelling at steve for having a cold house. And steve says he can put the heat on or get her a blanket, but billy waves him off before shrugging off his prized leather jacket and throwing it at max.
And something warm flutters deep in steve’s stomach as he watches their interaction. Something he hasn’t felt since nancy and it builds and builds inside of him.
And then he sees the bruises on billy’s side. Sees the small splotches of red peeking through billy’s white shirt. Watches billy wince as he continues his exploration of steve’s house.
Eventually, steve tells billy to follow him. Has to say it with faux authority because billy loves to argue. When they finally do get to the bathroom, steve forces billy to sit, so he can clean his wounds because “you’re gonna get blood all over my mom’s new carpet, and she’s gonna kill me” which is a lie ofc because it’s not like she’s ever home, and even when she is, she’s only sober long enough to point out whatever flaw of steve she can pick at.
But they’re focusing on billy tonight, so steve brushes off the slight overshare, and billy seems to understand because he lets steve clean him up. Lets him run a warm rag over billy’s abs. Even let’s steve wash his hair (which is a whole other argument). And after, steve gives billy some of his clothes. They have different body sizes so the only thing that fits are a pair of sweats and one of steve’s old sweaters. But watching billy come out from the bathroom wearing his clothes sparks something in him, and he thinks that old sweater might just be his new favorite now.
After, billy starts looking around steve’s room. Says something like “so this where the magic happens” as he waggles his eyebrows. And steve goes to roll his eyes but there’s something about billy looking soft and cozy as he sinks into the cushion of steve’s bed. And that warm feeling is back, and it’s spreading this time. And he has to look away because he’s starting to think of scenarios of billy sleeping in his bed not just for one night but for forever, and...yeah he can’t think of that right now.
So he uses this moment of billy being slightly distracted to go to the kitchen. Makes up another lie about billy having to stay in his room for whatever reason and billy agrees because “your bed feels so good, harrington.” and steve can’t take it anymore and he runs out blushing.
He comes back a half hour later with slices of pizza but billy protests because he’s on a strict diet of not eating whatever the fuck they put in Sal’s pizza. But steve is prepared this time, so he counters saying they had extra and they have to eat it all or else the racoons will get it and everyone is full, so billy has to eat the rest of it.
And steve has already been really weird tonight. Doesn’t want to make it weirder by watching billy eat. So he grabs the closest thing to him which happens to be some romance book from the 1800s that he took out for a school assignment and never returned.
But he’s made his grave already, so he starts reading it. Or at least tries to, but soon the words start blurring together because he keeps getting distracted, and he resorts back to an old trick of reading everything out loud to help him stay on track. And then he remembers billy’s still in the room, and he’s looking at him with this curious look. And steve feels like he’s in grade school again, about to get scolded for being disruptive, so he stutters out an apology, but billy cuts him off, saying he can’t hear the book when steve’s sitting so far away.
and there’s plenty of room on the bed.
So somehow, steve finds himself, sitting on his bed, one side of his body pressed to billy’s, reading an 18th century romance book. and there’s heat being passed between them, but there’s heat filling inside steve too.
Time passes and they get lost in the story, but then suddenly, there’s a loud bang followed by screaming coming from the living room, and steve immediately jumps up, reaching for his bat, but then he hears dustin yell out a “sorry steve” followed by a chorus of “sorry, steve.”
And it takes a second, but his heart rate is slowing back down, but then he looks over at billy, and his eyes are wide and his fingers are digging into his side and he’s breathing really heavily like he’s on the verge of crying or something and steve gets it...old billy.
So steve waits with billy. Helps him calm down by pressing billy’s hand to his chest, to help ground him. Once he’s a little better, steve says he better tell them to quiet down, and billy protests saying “don’t be such a mom, harrington” but the jumpiness is still slightly there in his eyes so steve shrugs him off saying “they’ve already had the cops called on them once because the kids were being obnoxiously loud” and he doesn’t need it to happen again. He doesn’t tell billy the incident was an argument over a video game or that the cop was hopper who didn’t even drive over because it wasn’t serious and it didn’t involve el.
Later, when it’s getting late, nancy and jonathan show up to take the kids home. As Steve talks to them, he notices max and billy arguing in the corner of the room. Eventually he works it out. Billy can’t go home tonight, but max doesn’t want him sleeping in his car because who knows what’s out there.
So steve offers, well more like agrees, to max’s question of letting billy spend the night. Billy protests and steve shrugs it off, saying he has multiple rooms in his house and he can sleep in any of those.
After everyone leaves, steve goes to set billy up in a guest room, but he notices him being hesitant about sleeping alone. And steve’s been lying all day, so he figures that one more can’t hurt so he says that billy’s gonna have to sleep in his bed tonight because the other rooms are filled with his parent’s souvenirs from their many adventures. And it’s so obviously a lie because they were just in a perfectly clean room, but billy smirks anyways and says something like “if you wanted me in your bed, just say that.”
They get back to steve’s room and curl up under the covers. And it’s so cold in steve’s house, so obviously they have to conserve heat by practically spooning each other. And it’s steve’s bed and he’s the one that’s cold, so he gets to be the big spoon this time. Which grants him a “you planning on there being a next time, harrington?” steve hopes billy can’t feel his heart fluttering.
A few minutes later, they’re laying there, both still awake. Because the worst part about living in the middle of nowhere is the constant sounds of nature. Steve’s used to it for the most part, but billy keeps tensing in his arms. So steve lies one last time and says something like “i hate the sounds of outside so i have to sing myself to sleep. Do you mind?” and billy shrugs, saying no. and steve starts singing something that’s not a bedtime song and his voice is bad, but it makes billy laugh which makes steve’s chest flutter and that warm feeling is back with a vengeance. But this time steve welcomes it.
As the song ends, billy’s breath starts getting slower and quieter, and steve thinks he’s asleep so he whispers a “goodnight hargrove” into billy’s hair.
But his calculations are off, and billy stirs in his arms, and steve freezes, nose still touching billy’s curls. And then billy turns around, still wrapped in his arms and whispers a “thank you, pretty boy” into his chest before snuggling deeper into steve’s arms.

(Commentary and thoughts on the problem with certain anti tags and frankly anti tags in general, be warned)
I'm going to be honest, there is nothing that infuriates me more than those who attack a ship, or a character as abusive for the reason of banter, poor writing verging on character assassination or astonishing reasons as one character being created to be a beard for the other.
To give an example, the TimSteph ship has attracted a lot of hate recently because apparently one of the two is abusive towards the other (mostly Steph).
Tumblr media
Now, I'm not against preferring another ship to that one, such as StephCass or TimKon, or feeling that Steph has basically had a lot of her agency taken away recently, reducing her to just Tim's girlfriend and that causing people to distance themselves from the relationship, those are all fair enough reasons to not really like the ship. Even feeling like there is no chemistry is a reason, that I disagree with, but can respect.
What I can't respect are some of the reasons given for hating the ship.
To give an example, one tumblr outright stated that part of the reason (though not all of it) they hated Steph was because she was created by a homophobe (Chuck Dixon who IS conservative at the very least) to serve as beard for Tim.
Ignoring for a second that Tim is explicity sexually attracted to women (though considering the run that made that clearest was FabNic's version of Red Robin, I can understand not knowing about it), Steph was originally created to be a one-off character, it was fan popularity that caused her to return AND become a love interest for Tim. Even ignoring that, Tim was dating another girl named Arriana, which didn't work out for various reasons, the least of which was his constant absences to perform his duties as Robin.
Speaking of FabNic, it was his run as writer for Robin that is most often brought up when giving reasons to hate Steph and call her abusive. A run that was basically a rush job, when Dixon left DC again for unrelated reasons, where FabNic proceeded to write Steph hire Scarab of all people to fight Tim non-lethally after promising Batman to make him better. I'm going to be honest, I hated the idea of this to begin with, but someone pointed out how stupidly out of character Steph hiring Scarab was given that A) she would definitely not have the contacts to pull it off, and B) Scarab was the entire reason Steph got fired as Robin, resulting in a lot of trauma for her and I have to agree.
Combined with Steph being portrayed as unusually incompetent and her motivations being glossed over and it really reads like either A) FabNic had a vendetta against her character, meaning her character was hurt again almost immediately after being finally getting a break and having her incredibly spiteful death retconned or B) he was in such a rush due to being brought in to write the final arc of Robin in a hurry when Dixon left, that he didn't think his ideas through, and just wanted to get rid of Tim's supporting cast quickly and finish things up for the next writer to have a clean slate, causing him to write that mess of an arc.
To anyone unfamiliar with FabNic's work, the exact same thing happened in Red Robin when the Nu52 was about to happen, so he ended up butchering an entire arc he had planned, Tim's character suffering from an abrupt shift in coldness again when he was getting better and left the series on a frankly unsatisfying cliffhanger. So, I can completely see that as being what happened.
Now as for those who say that Steph's banter with Tim is cruel and abusive. This is something he canonically said very shortly before their relationship started.
Tumblr media
So Tim definitely gave as good as he got.
Though this is nothing to what he once said to his first girlfriend, Arianna.
Tumblr media
Not that I believe for a second Tim is actually sexist, but his banter can be unusually and unintentionally aggressive at times.
Now I'm not going to say a word about most of Yost's Red Robin run, but what helps is that Tim is not being portrayed as being in the right with many of his actions and gets called out as such, plus he was written pretty clearly to be in a mentally bad place.
Otherwise I and probably a lot of Tim's fans, hate the Batman jr. Character arc every writer (but Dixon ironically) seemed to have fixated on him having, making him become positively humourless for quite a while (especially in Teen Titans, but to be honest there are many fans of the YJ team who hated that run.) Which basically started with Steph and his dad's deaths by the way.
I'm not going to deny Tim and Steph had their fair share of drama before War Games, most notably the power imbalance caused by Tim knowing Steph's name, but being unable (yes, unable) to give her his. Tim had a reason for not telling Steph, Bruce making him promise not to, and he kept that promise even with the YJ team, and even made it clear that Steph couldn't know if they entered a relationship. That's all fair enough, even if Tim had a nasty habit of reminding Steph he knew her name while they were out in the open, putting her identity at risk and knew she hated it.
The stalking was caused when Tim implied he personally knew a girl they rescued, causing Steph to realise just how unbalanced their relationship was, since Tim could be cheating on her without her knowing due to the double life (and had in fact done so to his previous girlfriend Arianna, with Steph).
Which lets be honest, is also completely understandable as their relationship couldn't work long-term without it being equal knowledgewise.
Think about it, you're in a relationship with someone who refuses to tell you his real name, you may be able to recognise him without his mask on, but have no idea he goes to the same school as you since he makes sure to avoid you while simultaneously keeping an eye on you.
Tim himself realised this, since when Batman leaked his secret without his permission, he eventually made it clear he didn't blame Steph and that he should have been open with her when it began to trouble her.
As for Steph coming on to him when he had a girlfriend and wasn't interested, well this is what caused her to crush on him...
Tumblr media
He had just been traumatised by being trapped underground with Cluemaster (brrr.) So kissing her in relief when he had a girlfriend was understandable, but it's also understandable that Steph thought he was interested in her especially since he never mentioned a girlfriend.
Amd Tim clearly cared for her in some way regardless judging from this page when Steph was kidnapped a few issues later.
Tumblr media
As for Steph only being in love with Robin... the problem is that Steph made it clear once that she didn't care if Tim quit and she'd love him all the same.
Tumblr media
So, no, I don't think Tim and Steph was an abusive ship, it might not be your cup of tea, but it's certainly not abusive, especially when written by a writer who isn't being rushed or got a lot on his plate.
As a side-note, it's worth noting that due to how the Tumblr Search Engine works, people not looking for Anti Tags, and instead quite the opposite, still end up finding them on occassion, so yes, they have a right to be annoyed and complain in private conversations.
I'm sorry if this devolved into a rant, but many anti threads have a nasty habit of focusing only on the bad, even when that bad isn't consistent characterisation. Whether we like the Character or not, we need to remember that having so many writers means that the Character will be screwed up occasionally. How many times has Batman learn not to be a jerk only to return to be a jerk almost immediately? How many times has Green Arrow gotten his act together only for another writer to have him return to cheating on Black Canary again?
We have to concede that any character can be screwed up by the wrong writer and we shouldn't hold that against them, especially when the stuff we don't like doesn't consistently happen.

i’ll drop this on my blog here too actually bc it’s Important to how i play damian and also let me yell about the fact that ij’s bruce is not a good person and the reason why so many people hate damian is because they somehow miss that.
so! here’s a warning for: tyrannical totalitarian regimes, child abuse, abusive fathers, emotional manipulation, evil superman, character death & also random he-man. please note that this is about injustice and its characters, which are not a reflection on their mainstream counterparts or how i view them.
there’s tension between damian and bruce from the get-go in injustice, and we’re never really told why. if we take cues from the game (though that entire scene doesn’t make sense) then it’s because bruce didn’t save jason, which fits in with my reordered robin theory in which tim and jason were switched, and jason has only recently died.
now, we don’t know whether jason is running around as red hood right now or not. but i’m inclined to say he isn’t, as his injustice 2 ending makes a big deal of him becoming red hood. and damian is close with jason in injustice 2, close enough that jason listens when damian tells him that he’s a lot more than bruce thinks he is and drops the shitty batman costume. close enough that during the (extremely weird, extremely out of alignment with the comic) scene in injustice 2 where damian betrays bruce for clark, jason is the name damian throws at him with the most vehemence. regardless of the robin ordeer, bruce’s failure to save jason is seems to be an incredibly sore point between them.

Whumptober 2020: Day 2 - In the hands of the enemy
Prompt: Pick who dies
Summary: Much to Jason’s annoyance, he’s been chosen to make the decision of which brother should live and which one should die.
Enjoy! :D
“It’s a pretty simple decision really.” The henchman says sardonically. “Who lives and who dies?”
Jason is very grateful that he was now wearing a helmet which covered his face so no one could see his expression. No one had to see the way he was biting his lip with worry or the way his eyes flicked backwards and forwards between Dick and Tim opposite him.
His brothers were on their knees before him, their hands tied behind their backs and not looking too good for wear. Tim was struggling to keep his head up, every other second or so he would jerk it up before slumping again as if he could barely stay awake, that wound on his shoulder wasn’t looking too good either, it’s been bleeding steadily for a while now and it really needs to get treated soon. Dick, on the other hand, had his head held up high and was snarling at the men around them, nothing more than a bruise covering his jaw.
The two of them were a complete comparison to Jason who was strapped tightly to a chair opposite them. His wrists and ankles were strapped similarly to the chair by leather bounds, making sure he couldn’t move.
It was stupid, all three of them having been caught stupidly off guard. Even with all of their abilities they were still outnumbered and had been over-powered, captured and now put in this apparent life or death situation. Much to Jason’s annoyance, he’s the one that has to pick which brother lives and what one dies.
Standing opposite him, behind Dick and Tim’s kneeling forms, was the head of the henchmen, the one in charge apparently. He waved a pointed gun between Dick and Tim, asking Jason to choose which one he should shoot. The ‘boss’ only needs two of them alive and to make it more interesting they get to kill one while they wait for him to arrive. Who this boss was, remains a mystery but that's one that’ll be needed to be solved after they get out of this mess. Bruce is going to be so pissed at all of them.
“Time is ticking Red Hood. Which one lives and which one dies?” The henchman declares loudly again, still waving that gun around. “Make your choice before I make it for you.”
Jason wishes he had his own gun, then he can blow that fuckers face to smithereens. He looks at his brothers forms, Tim wasn’t doing so well and if he doesn’t get treated soon then he really would die. Dick seemed to be doing okay, his elder brother was hiding his pain well but Jason knew it was all an act. Dick was looking at him and was ever so slightly shaking his head, but Jason chose to ignore it.
Where was Bruce when they needed him? Surely this wouldn’t be a second time the man leaves his Robin to die in the hands of the enemy?
The sound of a gun cocking grabs his attention. Looking away from Dick, Jason glares at the henchman standing behind his brothers.
“Times going down Hood. Make your choice.”
Would he actually shoot one of them and let the other live? Jason doesn’t think he has the balls to actually shoot one of them. He grits his teeth, carries on glaring at the man through his helmet and remains stubbornly silent.
The henchman lets out an irritated huff. “Fine. I’m going to count down from ten, if you don’t say a name then I’m choosing whoever I want. 10.” He continues to wave the gun between Dick and Tim.
“9.”
He won’t do it.
“8.”
It’s all just a bluff, a big show being put on.
“7.”
Where was Bruce, hopefully the man was on his way. Even if it is all a bluff, his help would be greatly appreciated right now.
“6.”
Tim still wasn’t looking good. Had the kid finally passed out because he wasn’t moving?
“5.”
Dick was staring at him, trying to convey a message to his by the slight shake of the head.
“4.”
Where was Bruce?
“3.”
If Jason was to choose, who would be more likely to survive a gunshot right now? Would he be able to buy them some time if he did choose?
“2.”
What if he wasn’t bluffing?
“1.”
“Nightwing!” Jason suddenly blurts out. “Shoot Nightwing.”
What the hell? What was he thinking! Before him Dick stiffens on the ground as the henchman pauses, looking at him confused for a moment like he couldn’t actually believe Jason chose one of them to be shot.
Whether it was intended or not, the desired effected of buying them some time had paid off because in that moment of pause, all hell breaks loose. The door to the room explodes open at the same time as the rotting windows shatter.
Three figures enter the room and swiftly take out the henchmen. The henchman in charge doesn’t even get a chance to blink before he’s getting knocked out by a roundhouse kick from Batgirl.
Once they were all down, the figures all rush towards them, two of them head towards Nightwing and Red Robin and cut them loose, while the third comes to Jason and frees him from his restraints.
During all of that Jason couldn’t believe what he had done, his mind had shut down as he kept replaying the scene over and over again in his mind. He barely paid any attention as they were rescued and herded into the batmobile and taken straight to the cave to be checked over.
Everything was a blur as they asked him questions, checked him over for any injuries and tried to work out what happened. Jason couldn’t exactly recall what he had told his family because he was still caught up over what had happened earlier.
It was later on when he was on his own in his bedroom, that Jason decided he needed to deal with what had happened. His mind was still reeling over the events that had occurred and there was no way he was going to be able to sleep without confronting it.
Leaving his room he makes his way to down one of the many corridors of the manor and heads to Dick’s bedroom. Hoping that his brother wasn’t yet asleep, Jason taps lightly on the door and lets himself in. Thankfully, Dick is awake and is simply sat on his bed scrolling through his phone. He looks up as Jason enters and raises an eyebrow.
“Hey Jay, everything alright?” The question comes out sounding concerned, which is fair enough. How often does Jason go to Dick with his problems anymore? Not a lot, that’s how many.
Jason silently closes the door and goes to sit on the end of the bed. He refuses to look at Dick as he plays with his hands in his lap. “I’m sorry.”
He feels Dick shift on the bed and feels his brother’s gaze on him. “Sorry about what?”
“For choosing you. To get shot I mean.”
Dick lets out a sigh and Jason feels a hand land on his shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. “It’s fine Jason. There's nothing to be sorry about. It was going to be either Tim or me, and I rather it be me go than him. There wasn’t anything you could do.”
“I chose you to die Dick. I made that decision.” Jason stresses that point and looks at his brother. “How can you say it’s alright?”
Dick moves his hand from his shoulder to cup Jason’s face. Dick makes eye contact with him and keeps his tone firm, “Because nothing happened Jay. The others got to us on time, you saying my name brought us those few seconds that were needed. It saved us. Please don’t fret about it.”
Jason opens his mouth to protest further, because how could Dick be okay with what he had done, but the older man simply pulls him in for a hug. The angle was awkward and uncomfortable but Jason found himself melting into the hold and soon hugs Dick back.
He guesses he could bring it up again tomorrow, it’s been a long day and for now he needs to focus on that Dick is okay and how Tim is currently alive and resting in the med bay in the cave.

List of wings types in your wing fic series?
Phoenix has blue jay wings with white inner feathers instead of the typical grey. He broke his left wing when he was fifteen, and now it can only hold him for very brief flights.
Larry has mourning dove wings, they are very soft and cozy
Edgeworth’s a golden eagle, meaning his wingspan’s actually enormous and he has a difficult time flying in urban areas and has to be careful spreading them fully indoors.
Trucy has crow wings, the same as her birth father, and lives up to crows’ reputation for being very clever
Athena has crow wings too, as it happens, and she really likes the contrast they give to the bright colours she tends to wear
Apollo has red and green macaw wings, call him a scarlet macaw and he will quickly correct you because that’s technically a different breed of macaw with a slight difference in feather colours
Klavier has peacock wings, and they’re flashy and splashy and he loves them. There’s a common misconception in-universe that peacocks are incapable of flight, so he often adds aerial stunts at his shows to help counter this.
Kristoph is a melanistic peacock, with a few patches of caramel on his pinions which he dyes black to match the rest of his feathers.
Gumshoe has pigeon/rock dove wings, and he bobs in place sometimes; humans don’t actually get bird behaviours based on their wings or birds in general, that’s just Gumshoe
Sebastian DeBeste is an indigo bunting, and people are sometimes dismissive of him in court due to having songbird wings. He’s getting better and better and making them regret this.
Franziska has black swan wings. Her father was openly disappointed in her for not fledging as a predatory bird of some sort; Edgeworth commented to her afterwards that his family has a history of fledging swans (she has never forgotten this).
Kay is actually a sparrow, which makes her nice and inconspicuous when she wants to be
Maya is a northern goshawk, and both eye-catching and a good flier as a result
Pearl is an English robin - tiny and adorable and will knife-fight god if called upon to do so
Godot was a red-tailed hawk, but his wings had to be amputated while he was in his coma, as his body was struggling to support both them and the rest of itself
Simon Blackquill is a crane. Another old wives tale is that people with crane wings are always as loyal as the birds they share wings with, meaning his apparent betrayal of his teacher was taken even worse in this universe than it was in canon
Nahyuta is an egret, but he doesn’t fly very often - he claims he never got into the habit as a child (he never goes into detail as to why)
Maggey Byrde is an albatross. People say this is suitable, considering her bad luck, but she actually likes her wings a lot, especially since she’s lucky enough to live near the coast and is able to go flying over the ocean sometimes
Lana Skye  is a peregrine falcon, and she’s an expert at maneuvering through the city from the sky
Aaaaand that’s pretty much everyone I have at the moment!

Get Me Out of Gotham
AN: Self-indulgent bullshit written, partly, while logging ‘cat-social-hours’, a phrase which here means, ‘sitting outside with a semi-feral cat to get him acclimated to his new home’. (The cat is nice, just skittish around people. He’s getting there.)
* * *
Nicole was going to see a therapist. She’d hit it off with a really nice man that had come in one night, even. He’d been a tall, thin man with a quiet demeanor and with nothing but five minutes and a few soft sentences, she’d been convinced he could help her with the nightmares and the paranoia.
But then she’d popped into the kitchen for somebody’s order and the chef had told her to stay away from him, that he was some freak called the Scarecrow who scared people literally to death for shits and giggles and science.
“But he said he’s a psychiatrist,” she’d said helplessly.
“Yeah. Used to be one, over at Arkham. Look, you wanna claw your own eyes out, that’s your business, but I’d stay away from him.”
So no therapy. She’ll get some, she decides, when she goes home. Six more months. She’s made it this long, right?
Six months, though. She still wakes up three nights a week. Sometimes the man shoots her in the head, sometimes the Red Hood advances on her next, intoning, “Let the punishment fit the crime.”
Sometimes she just has to run from him, but that faceless red mask is always a few steps behind her, like Michael Myers.
But. She’s. She’s doing okay, all things considered. She bought some pepper spray. She followed Batwatch and the GCPD on Twitter to help avoid anything major. Most people, her coworkers say, don’t see the vigilantes that often. Robin’s the most common one, then Batman, then Red Hood. Batgirl hasn’t been seen for years, she’s probably out of action. Sometimes someone (something?) called Nightwing pops into town, but he mostly operates in Bludhaven. So odds are she’ll be fine, right? Go to work, then stick to nice, normal places like Starbucks and Wal-Mart. Chains, she thinks, are key. Don’t be a local and it’s safer.
But she still hates walking under the skylight.
Taking out the trash sucks, too; the alley’s dark and cramped and it smells like death and rotting McDonald’s. And there’s rats, big ones that don’t scatter when she shakes the bag at them. Sometimes there’s a raggedy old cat with a torn ear and one eye, but it’s mean.
Tonight the lighting’s worse than ever. Their bulb’s out, apparently, and the neon sign across the street has a few letters not working, so all she’s got is a flashing purple girl and three blue ‘M’s. But that’s okay, because the dumpster’s literally ten steps from the door. It’s okay.
It’s not okay. She’s just hefting the bag up to try and hurl it in when the flashing neon goes sort of red in the corner of her eye. She drops the bag, already trying to tell herself it’s nothing.
It’s not nothing. The Red Hood’s slouched against the wall not three feet away. He raises his head, slow and deliberate, and rasps, “Who are you.”
Shit.
“I just. I just work here--I wait tables! Just tables! Please--”
“I’m not gonna hurt ya.” He sets his head back against the bricks. “Finish whatever you came out for and go back in. I was never here.”
Okay. Okay.
She bends down, picks up the bag, and inches towards the dumpster. Hood doesn’t move, but she thinks he’s watching her. She heaves the bag into the dumpster and steps away from him as fast as possible. And then she trips over her own feet and lands on her ass.
“Shit--”
“You okay?” The head moves again, still slow. “Need help up?”
Fuck no.
“No! No thank you. I’m. I’m just clumsy, I swear, I--”
“Breathe, kid.”
She shuts up, scrambles to her feet and tries to brush herself off. She’s just feeling for leftover gravel when the door opens and Dove’s annoyed voice says, “Hon, what are you doing out here--Hood?”
He waves.
“Hi, Miss Marquis.”
“What’s up?”
“Think I scared, uh…”
“Nicole.” No! No! Don’t tell the scary man her name! “Out-of-towner.”
“Oh.” He sounds like he’s trying to be nice when he tilts towards her and says, “Sorry.”
“What are you doing out here?” Dove demands. “It’s late as it is.”
“Flouting authority,” Hood says, shrugging towards the No Loitering sign behind him. “Yknow. Stickin’ it to the man.”
Nicole flashes back to the robbery. Can she go in? He’s not talking to her anymore, will he care? Is it safe? Maybe she should tell someone to tell Penguin. Or, like, the cops.
Dove coughs. Or maybe that’s her trying to hide a laugh, Nicole can’t tell.
“What else are you doing out here, kiddo.”
What.
That thing is no kiddo. He’s huge! He kills people!
Why did I think Gotham University was a good move? I got accepted into two other ones, why did I come here?
Hood’s silent for a minute, like he’s nervous or something. Nicole wonders if she can sneak back inside and hide in the bathroom.
“I got Pyg. Like. He won’t. He can’t hurt anyone else.”
Pyg? Who’s Pyg? Is he dead? Is he human?
Whoever he is, Dove must know, because she goes very still before saying, voice rough and ten years older, “You’re sure?”
“Pretty sure he’s not gonna grow a new head,” Hood says quietly. “So. Yeah. M’sure.”
So it was another person. That Hood murdered. Great. How many freaks are in this town? Pyg was not in the warning brochure she got with her college acceptance letter! He wasn’t even in the Google search!
Dove sighs and fidgets with the brace on her left wrist, and right about now Nicole wonders, again, where that came from. She’d asked, initially, but Dove had waved her off, said something about a mugger and goddamn meat-packing district with lazy beat cops, and she’d let it go.
“--sure you’re good? You’re movin’ kinda careful.”
“Storm’s coming.” So what, he’s got arthritis or something? “M’good. Just crackly.”
“Then go home before you get shot. Or worse.”
“M’fine--”
“I am going to worry and I am going to be upset and if I have to, I’ll call Harvey and have him tell Jim to call Batman on you.”
“You wouldn’t.”
“See what happens.”
Nicole has no idea what’s happening here.
Hood’s silent for a few seconds, like he’s thinking things over.
“You would.”
“I would.”
He sighs, slumps a little more, and grumbles, “I’ll turn in early. Promise.”
“Thank you.” Dove turns to Nicole, jerks her head towards the door. “C’mon. Back to work for us. And you.” She jabs a finger at Hood. “You take care of yourself for once.”
“I always take care of myself!”
“Bullshit. Go home, kid. I mean it.”
He tips his head like he wants to shrug but can’t, says, “Thanks for the tip on that bastard.”
“Kinda wish I hadn’t picked it up,” Dove says dryly. “Home. Or I really will get Batman called on you.”
Nicole blinks and Hood’s just gone, like he was never there at all. Dove gives her a nudge back towards the door.
“Um…”
“Hm.”
“Mugger?”
“Always carry mace in this town.”
She does. But still.
You know what, no. No. She doesn’t wanna know, she’s not gonna go home and Google ‘Pyg’ or anything at all, she’s gonna go home and lock all the doors and hide under the covers and try not to have nightmares about rolling heads and gunshots.
Christ, why did she come here?
THE END

Museum Mishap Chapter 6: Safe
It’s five weeks after Jason disobeyed Batman’s orders to drop the idea of investigating the rumor that a random rich kid knew the vigilantes’ secret identities.
Five weeks since Jason let himself be kidnapped by the upstart drug lord Lorenzo Sabini in an attempt to protect the kid who was Sabini’s real target – the kid rumored to know impossible things about Batman and Robin.
Five weeks since Jason’s leg was broken – in the line of a duty he never should’ve been asked to shoulder, never should’ve been allowed to feel bound to carry – and Bruce Wayne rediscovered the impossible duality of being responsible for the life of a child that he’d somehow managed to forget. That had faded from his mind when Dick had grown up enough to go off on his own – without his Guardian having any legal say in stopping him.
Batman has been able to bury the raging concern, the guilt he bears for introducing Jason to such a dangerous lifestyle – for not doing more to discourage his interest. Batman is able to silence the voice that says Jason acted honorably, if stupidly, by insisting that Robin needs to do better, to be better, so that he can keep the boy inside the costume safer.
But Bruce is having trouble letting Jason heal.
‘Suffocating’ Jason calls his attentions, merely ‘stupid codling he doesn’t need’.
Jason submitted to three weeks of strictly bedrest – a godsend if Bruce could ever believe in such things. He’d offered only mild resistance to being benched for six weeks – to rigorous and thorough PT, and light, careful exercise and a slow return to the training regimen that kept shaping Robin’s growing body into something more heroic than the average simple human.
But there was no point in even trying to bring up the idea of retiring Jason’s pixie boots for good – of trying to convince him to stand down from the Vigilante fight.
Bruce knows that, but he still tries it – once, in a terse conversation that gets shut down before he even makes it to the first point of reasoning – and then he swallows the rest of the worry and buries it in silence alongside his fury at Jason’s constant reckless disregard for his own safety. Bruce knows he can’t stop Jason, can’t force him out of the cape, so Batman vows to train him harder, push him further, make him stronger, make him faster, more durable, more prepared – keep him safer.
           It’s a compromise.
And it has to be enough.
Because Jason is already back on his feet.
He broke his own way out of the cast almost a week ago – refused to apologize or sit for another casting – and though Alfred’s managed to somehow force him into a sturdy brace, guilted him into maintaining his use of the crutches… Jason’s been back inside the Cave twice already while Batman has been out – at least twice.
The Cave’s security cameras have caught him on the Salmon Ladder the last two nights in a row – going through two sets his first night back, and four the next. So that was two nights, at least, that security footage showed Jason working out inside the Cave, but it was possible there were nights he wasn’t tagged on the Cave’s security footage. Dick had certainly learned to sneak down without being caught on camera. Bruce doubted that Dick would share his secrets with Jason – but it was not beyond possibility.
Bruce kept meaning to add more cameras, to ensure that every inch of the cave was covered by an unblinking eye equipped with filters in Starlight and infrared, but that project kept getting sidelined somehow. He kept getting distracted.
Because his kids kept getting hurt.
But it’s been five weeks since Jason got hurt.
He’s getting better, and his bullheaded determination is just the same as it was before the injury – the stubborn streak still apparent, now even more so if anything had changed.
But there’s something else about Jason that’s different.
Bruce almost can’t see it – almost convinces himself it’s not happening, because he’s so damn hopeful that it is happening that his chest constricts with this strange kind of joy or pride or something and he doesn’t know what to do with it.
Because Dick and Jason are talking.
           Not fighting, talking.
Alfred’s caught them playing video games. Together.
They were supposed to be doing homework – Jason’s been back at school for three weeks and while Dick’s purposefully selected freshman college classes don’t require constant attendance, they do give assignments that need to be turned in online – but still…
Dick and Jason are getting along.
His adopted sons are becoming brothers.
           Bruce notices.
And wants it to be real so badly that it hurts.
           Batman notices, too.
But Batman notices other things, as well.
Batman notices how the Wayne Boys have befriended the kid Jason got himself kidnapped alongside.
Batman notices how Nightwing volunteers to swing off on his own every night for a cursory once over of deterrence through Coventry and around the area in the Upper West Side where Sabini’s gang and the rumors they’d acted on had run amok – had being the operative word, seeing as how the entire area had been scared so straight there hasn’t even been a purse snatching in over a month.
Batman notices how quiet the supposed-civilian kid at the center of those rumors is when he’s home alone – which is often – how the only thing he talks about out loud, in range of Batman’s listening devices, is how much he admires the caped crusaders and how much he wants for their ramshackle team to work together as brothers and sisters in arms – to work through their issues and be a kind of family.
           Batman notices.
           And he watches.
And he’s concerned by what he sees.
So tonight, as Nightwing swings off towards Coventry – with a big smile and a wholly unnecessary flip – Batman decides to investigate the kid firsthand.
The civilian’s name is Timothy Jackson Drake and he is twelve years old, enrolled as a sixth grader at Gotham Preparatory Academy Primary Campus. His parents are Jack and Janet Drake, famed globe-trotting researchers and archeologists, and the second generation of Drakes to head up Drake Industries – a leading Wayne Enterprises competitor. The Drakes reside in the mansion that neighbors the Wayne Estate – another statement of how DI both complements and competes with WE.
           Timothy Drake seems mostly unremarkable.
He’s skipped two grades, and his teachers say he’s got a remarkable mind, but he lacks significant social skills and spends most of his time alone – tinkering with some project or other. He’s never demonstrated a particular drive to be anything when he grows up, but he’s applied to the Wayne Tech summer camps three years in a row – despite being under the age requirement – and his bedroom is littered with DI equipment and half-finished robots he’s clearly engineered himself in the hours and hours he spends unsupervised.
           Lucius Fox likes him.
In the way that some people like puppies.
Bruce isn’t even entirely sure how Lucius Fox discovered the Drake kid, but it’s in his files in the Batcomputer – Fox has his name on a recruitment list, circled in red sharpie with a smiley face next to it.
So, Timothy Drake is a smart kid.
           But he’s just a kid.
According to all of Batman’s information, Timothy Drake is just a kid.
A civilian who happened to have a bad stroke of luck and got his name wrapped up in a rumor founded on nothing more than a junkie’s word and some evidence that the kid in question was a vigilante fan.
Is still a fan, somehow, despite the circumstance that admiration landed him in.
Timothy Jackson Drake seems like nothing more than a dedicated fan – a child, not a threat. But the evidence is so peculiar – there are ridiculously strong indications that the rumor carried truth, and yet… the notion that the child knows nothing is so convincing that Dick and Jason agree on it… which in and of itself makes the evidence seem suspect…
Thus, Batman is set on investigating the matter further for himself.
A twelve year old civilian would be in bed at this time of night, tucked safely into the labyrinth of the Drake Mansion.
So as Nightwing peals away to the west, Batman plots a course northward.
He’s planned this carefully. His choice of direction does not immediately alert Nightwing to his intentions. He’s been rotating where he patrols after splitting off from Nightwing, moving counterclockwise by a dozen blocks every few days. Now he’s pointed right towards the Robbinsville area, where he’s stashed one of his getaway vehicles – a rather bland, all-black motorcycle that’s nothing special, but is quick and maneuverable enough to get him to the Drake Estate and back before Nightwing realizes he’s deviated.
He even has Batgirl prepped to back Nightwing up if something happens – Barbara is visiting her father this weekend and doing research for her own case in Chinatown. She might not be actively patrolling, but Batman had been sure to give her warning of his activities.
He trusts her discretion, and he knows she would be as worried as him about Nightwing's probable – and possibly willful – oversight of the threat posed by Drake. Batman does not want to think Nightwing would be so foolish as to dismiss a threat simply because it doesn't seem actively threatening – or worse, because he wanted to curry favor with his adoptive brother – But it’s always better to be safe.
So, Batman is tracking north – from slightly further east than he’d originally planned, drawn off course by what seemed to be a mugging, but quickly resolved as Batman ID'd a drunk man resisting as his friend took away his keys – and he’s determined to get to the bottom of Drake’s capabilities and influence.
He’s about to swing down to the last tall building before the midrises and family homes of Robbinsville take over Gotham’s footprint when he spies a figure huddled on the rooftop.
Had Batman been approaching from his planned route, he wouldn’t have seen the figure until he touched down on the roof – within easy knife throwing distance of the stranger, with no chance to react if an attack was imminent.
Carefully, Batman swings around to the far side of the building and climbs silently up to roof level after landing on a balcony. He creeps close enough to ascertain that the would-be assailant is small – even with a massive jacket attempting to keep out the late January chill, the figure is miniscule… a child.
Concern leaps, unbidden, into his chest as he wonders what could possibly bring a child onto a freezing cold rooftop in the middle of the night. The apartment building is not the lowest rent residence in the region, but it has its fair share of alcoholics and abusers. It would not be unheard of for a child to sneak away for what respite they can get and the Bat knows that this situation takes precedence to his Drake investigation.
Batman is just about to announce his presence – From far enough away to hopefully prevent the kid from falling off the roof in fright, though he has his grapple gun ready just in case – when the kid shifts.
An eerie blue glow lights up the crouching figure’s face as his phone flares briefly to life.
           It's Timothy Jackson Drake.
Batman frowns, continues to silently observe.
Drake curls more tightly around his knees. He huffs – breath turning instantly to steam that catches in the city's light – And mutters, “He should be here by now... There’s no sirens, no breakouts, nothing to keep him away… unless he’s not coming this way tonight… but he should be… he’s been moving north… but maybe I miss-counted the interval, or maybe I’m too far north… but this is the best vantage to check on Robinsv-”
His mumbled monologue – which Batman is certain he is not intentionally speaking aloud – is interrupted by a sneeze.
“Bless you,” Batman says, stepping from the darkest shadows.
           “Thanks,” Tim returns.
A beat passes, and then Tim whirls around with a string of oddly pronounced Chinese curses spilling from his tongue.
“Batman,” Tim breathes, awestruck and a little bit fearful.
“Timothy,” Batman returns, “I hear you’ve been looking for me.”
It’s true, the kid had just mumbled as much. There was no one else he could possibly be waiting for here, not with the details he’d murmured about having tracked to find him.
           “Um, kinda,” the kid admits.
He’s not as surprised by Batman’s recognition of him – of the Bat using his name directly – as Batman would’ve thought. He is nervous though, antsy. Batman scans him for weapons, but nothing notable shows up in any of his cowl’s filters and the coat is too cumbersome for any shapes beneath it to be positively identified.
Tim does have something in his hands, though – something he’s clutched close to his chest. Bare fingers glow ghostly in the night, tremble in the freezing air.
It’s not a weapon that he’s holding, or a camera – like might be expected and acceptable from a fan. It’s a set of note cards. Note. Cards. Like he’s practicing for a speech.
On an ice cold Gotham rooftop in the middle of the night.
Bruce Wayne is thrown by that. Far enough to make Batman pause.
Batman regards the kid standing before him in the darkness.
           Timothy Drake stares back.
“Did you have a reason?” Batman asks eventually.
           “Huh?”
“To be looking for me, did you have a reason?”
Timothy looks down at his hands, at the half-crushed note cards he’s holding. “Yeah,” he says slowly, quiet with the kind of resignation Batman knows is guilt.
“Well?” Batman prompts when Timothy offers nothing more.
The kid flinches, and Batman fights a wince of his own.
The obvious reasons Nightwing has for underestimating this kid assert themselves plainly. He is a child, small for his age and easily frightened. There seems no reason to suspect him of anything – except that he was waiting on a rooftop for Batman, intentionally. A rooftop even Batman didn’t know he would be visiting until about a week ago.
“I’m worried about Robin,” Timothy admits. “And Nightwing, and Batgirl, for that matter, but mostly Robin.”
           “Why?”
Another flinch. Bruce Wayne consciously tries to reel back the Batman ‘grr factor’, as Dick has termed it. And yet… Timothy clearly knows more than he should. Perhaps the gravel and growl is worth it to extract that information.
“Because they need you to listen to them – that’s why you fought with Nightwing to begin with, right? You, um, you passed his mantle on without letting him explain why he didn’t want you to?” Tim’s actively struggling to make eye-contact.
           Batman doesn’t verbalize a response.
He’s evaluating how this kid could possibly know what he does without knowing the names beneath the masks – it’s possible, he supposes, but extremely unlikely.
“I get why you didn’t, he was still a kid and not very good at making his important points clear, but when he went to California, he didn’t want you to let him go, he wanted you to bring him home,” Timothy rambles, losing his battle for eye-contact.
           Batman scowls.
Timothy swallows dryly. Consults his notes.
“They need you to help them,” Timothy says.
Batman’s scowl deepens, and he must make some sound because Timothy doesn’t just flinch this time, he yelps and curls into himself. His cards get squeezed so tightly they pop out of his hands and scatter across the rooftop. Timothy dives after them, but the roof is wet with the afternoon's snow shower and the antifreeze that keeps it from becoming ice.
There is no recovering the careful presentation Timothy clearly had planned for this meeting. But Timothy isn’t willing to admit defeat immediately.
“Timothy Jackson Drake,” Batman says as the kid in question scrambles with his wet paper, frowning at the smudged and ruined ink like he should have been able to plan for that – like he should’ve had a contingency.
At Batman's voice saying his full name, Timothy freezes and stares up at him like a frightened deer.
“Tell me how and why you have come to know so much about the relationships between the Gotham masks.”
“That’s not important,” Timothy says. Quick, dismissive, like the point truly doesn’t matter in his world-view, or to his understanding of his place in it.
           “It’s not?”
“No. What’s important is that you’re not letting them do their jobs,” Timothy accuses.
And then he promptly freezes and stares up at Batman like he just then has realized not only what he said, but how – how direct and confrontational it was.
“They don’t have jobs,” Batman replies, level and calm. “They are children.”
“Not when they're wearing masks,” Timothy snaps back immediately. “When the masks are on, they’re vigilantes. Nothing else.”
Batman narrows his eyes at Timothy's temerity.
And fights himself to keep from agreeing with Timothy’s point. But his disagreement doesn’t make it any less true. No matter how much he wants to remember that under the masks the heroes who have joined his crusade in Gotham are children, he can’t ignore the truth of Timothy Drake's words: when the masks are on, they’re not children – They can’t be.
Batman cannot ignore that – can’t pretend it away.
But he can insist on one smaller truth. “They do not have jobs.”
Timothy glared – actually glared at Batman in full cape and cowl and scowl – and said firmly, “Their job is to make sure you remember why is it that you do yours.”
Batman blinked behind the lenses of his cowl.
“That’s not how it works,” Batman defends. Weakly – he knows.
But he’s not entirely sure what to do with this child, this strangely mature tiny human with hope and sweetness and innocence – and uncomfortably valid points – lecturing him like Batman is the errant child here.
“You can’t possibly be that stupid,” Timothy says – a moment later looking wide-eyed and horrified by his words, yet still going on with speaking as if his mouth had detached itself from is brain and was running on a will of its own. “They care about what happens to you, which makes you care about it. They need you alive, and you – on some level, at least – recognize that need. It keeps you safer. And it makes you be a better person, in trying to set a good example for them to follow. And that’s important.”
Tim pulls more air into his lungs, enough for another leg of his tirade, and goes on, “Without Robin, Batman is too violent, too aggressive… like Green Arrow starting to gain ground in Star City; you’re too much like the criminals you hunt to make a genuine, lasting difference. Without Robin, you’re just scary. Robin tempers you; makes you an inspiration – makes people believe that you aren’t just hurting bad guys, but also protecting good ones.”
Tim manages to close his mouth and keep it shut after that – if only by the simple force of his clear mortification sealing off his words.
           “Timothy.”
Terrified eyes peer up at Batman.
“What do you know about us capes? There was a reason Sabini had an interest in you and I’m not convinced it was just a junkie’s word and evidence that you’re a fan,” Batman lays out simply – calmly, regaining control of this discussion.
“I know that you’re necessary,” Tim replies in a squeak.
Eyes narrow behind the lenses of the cowl.
Tim ducks his head, fully aware that he has not answered Batman’s question.
“I know that Gotham needs you,” Tim reiterates. “I don’t know who you are beneath the masks, and I don’t want to know. I just want to help you keep Gotham safe. Because I’m not a mask, I’m just a fan… but I can still help.”
Batman regards the young civilian carefully. He has Jason’s spirit and determination, Dick’s unyielding sweetness, and Barbara’s practical acceptance of humanity’s flaws.
“You don’t know our civilian identities?”
Tim shakes his head. “I don’t care about them.”
Batman does not believe him – does not believe that he doesn’t know, or that he doesn’t care. Timothy Drake knows more than enough to be dangerous.
Dick has always been a terrible judge of character – in some ways, he always sees the best in people, in their potential – so his support of Timothy Drake as a non-threat means little.
But Jason is the most astute observer of humanity Bruce has ever encountered – he can read a person’s entire psyche in a gesture, find their cracks and weaknesses and apply just the right leverage to break them. And he’s never thrown from thinking that a seemingly innocent person is capable of doing a great deal of damage – would never underestimate a threat like that.
Case in point: how he hadn’t let go of the potential threat Tim posed to begin with.
Jason had decided Tim was safe.
Batman decides to trust his Robin’s judgement; Bruce puts faith in his son.
           Batman heaves a sigh.
“It’s time to go home, Timothy,” he says. “This is no place for a child to be, and you shouldn’t be out at this time of night.”
           Timothy frowns.
“It’s my city, too,” he mumbles.
Batman takes no quarter and as soon as he gets a nod of permission – Jason’s taught him how to work with children who aren’t like Dick, with an insatiable desire for physical contact – Batman hoists Timothy up and settles him on his hip. Batman holds tight to the child and shoots his grapple gun to carry them down to street level. He sits Timothy on his motorcycle and speeds across the city to Drake’s own door.
           There is no one home.
Concerning in a very different way.
Batman knew the Drakes were away. Bruce didn’t realize the implications of that beyond how Timothy was left unsupervised – hadn’t until right now.
“Do you want me to come in,” Batman asks, awkward and uncertain of whether it would help at all to walk the kid to his bedroom. Batman should not linger – should not even consider the idea of tucking this neglected child into bed – but Bruce cannot quite bear to drag himself away just yet. He needs to know that Timothy is safe.
Timothy is staring at him like he’s shown up as Batman to a career day at school.
           “Why?”
           “No one’s home.”
“No one’s ever home,” Timothy replied blankly, adding. “I don’t need a real babysitter, let alone Batman. But Nightwing probably needs backup.”
Batman nodded. Accepted that he needed to push the Bruce in him down until they finished with the night’s patrol.
Tomorrow he could look into Timothy Drake’s circumstances.
“Be safe, Timothy,” Batman fare-wells. “Stay off the streets, and be careful, or this will not be our last conversation.
“You be safe, too,” Timothy replies. “Or I’ll just have to find you again.”
Batman almost chuckles. He waits until Timothy locks the door behind him, and then he takes his motorcycle back to where he’d stashed it across the bridge from Robbinsville.
He meets up with Nightwing and finishes patrol.
If he’s more reticent than usual Nightwing doesn’t comment.
The teenager is still wearing the blinding goofy smile of his, broader now after a successful sweep of Coventry – no new rumors of Tim Drake. And he’d saved a cat from where it had gotten stuck on a gargoyle after it had slipped out of its apartment and ventured off an inopportune ledge beside the balcony.
And because that’s the kind of hero Dick is, he chatters on incessantly about the cat and how it wailed and scratched him at first and yowled as he swung around the building, but then it purred and refused to let him go when it realized he’d brought it home.
Beneath the cowl, Batman almost smiles.
When he and Nightwing make it back to the Cave, Jason is not down there – the only evidence that anyone has been down there since he and Nightwing left is the snack left out for them by Alfred. Jason is in bed, asleep and dead to the world when Bruce slips in to check.
           Jason is safe.
           And Dick is safe.
And Alfred and Barbara are safe.
           His family. Safe.
And Tim is… safe enough for the moment.
           Tonight, Bruce will sleep.
Tomorrow he will reevaluate the child and his circumstances.
But tonight, Bruce Wayne basks in the truth that has a Family.
And his family is home, and safe.
           It’s a foreign feeling.
           But a good one.

Impulse Control--Why Startling Poison Ivy Is A Really Bad Idea
Rating: E (Smut with some plot, for flavor.)
Fandom(s): DC Comics
Ship: Poison Ivy/Kate Kane
Linkage: Ao3
Summary:  To find Harley, Ivy must make an uneasy alliance with one of the more notorious (and notoriously attractive) members of the Batfamily. A simple, easy in-and-out. But nothing is so simple or easy, is it?
Note: Commission for @rookie009. Dude, thank you so much for commissioning me again. And indulging this weirdness.
->->->
Pam-a-lamb,
I’m doing bad stuff but don’t worry ‘bout it.
--Harley xoxo
“It’s completely unlike her, right?”
Jason leans against the doorway, one boot braced against it and the other flat on the floor. He holds Harley’s unfolded note in his gloved hands, narrowing his eyes at it as if the answer lies in the creases. “You know her better. What’s your gut telling you?”
“She--” Ivy sighs, rubbing circles between her eyebrows--a futile gesture against her impending headache. “--She doesn’t leave notes. Harley just goes . Maybe she texts me while she’s out somewhere because the color of someone’s jacket made her think of me.” Waving her hand at the note, Ivy meets Jason’s eyes. “This…
“...is planned.” Jason rotates the note, flipping it forward and back. “You sure it’s her handwriting?"
Honestly, Ivy doesn’t know what to think. “It...doesn’t look any different.” She coughs. “It smells like her.” Like buttered popcorn and Chinese food. Remembering cuts right into her sternum.
Jason puts a gloved hand over hers. He’s the only Robin who ever dared to touch her. “You’ll get her back. I know you will.”
She watches him step back towards the door. “Not we?”
“Sorry, Red. I can’t help you.” Jason shifts on his feet. To be honest, Ivy kind of expected this. She can still see the scar running down the side of his face, where a crowbar had bashed his head in, and where a coroner had sewn it back shut. Funny how the Lazarus Pit didn’t remove it when it brought him back. “The Outlaws and I have work in Markovia.” Ivy’s teeth grind together at the blatant lie, but before she can speak, he continues,  “But if it’s a gun you need, I’m not the only one in the Batfamily who can handle them.”
“Who--?”
“Don’t worry. She’ll find you.”
He shuts the door behind him so softly Ivy almost doesn’t hear it. The gears in her mind clicking into place drown it out.
You better be joking, Kid.
 -----
Jason was not kidding. Ivy enters her greenhouse lab, and finds Batwoman herself leaning against a drosera glanduligera . “I’d give Frankie some space if I were you. He finds unannounced guests quite delicious and full of nutrients.”
Batwoman quickly puts distance between them. Frankie’s tentacles sag with betrayal. “Red Hood told me you needed a favor?” Her crimson-stained lips wrinkle with distaste.
“Harley’s missing. Jason Todd told me you’d help.” It’s an exaggeration of his promise, but Ivy isn’t leaving anything to chance.
It’s hard to tell with the cowl, but Ivy swears Batwoman’s eyes widen just a little before narrowing into slits. “That depends. Am I aiding you in a crime?”
Ivy turns around, pretending to ignore her as she prunes a mutated rosa gymnocarpa, one that will fire its thorns at will. She’s thinking of naming it Lucy. “Depends on what you consider a crime.” Before Batwoman can answer, Ivy continues. “Is hacking government systems a crime? Is kidnapping?”
Batwoman steps next to her, and nearly fingers the rose petals, but thinks better of it. “You think government agents took her somewhere?”
“It wouldn’t be the first time. But I want to find her before someone worse does.”
Ivy’s desk seems like a safe enough place, and Batwoman perches there. “You’re not worried I’m going to turn you in?”
That gets a chuckle out of her. “You’re certainly welcome to try.”
The suggestion rolls off of her like rain on a window pane. “Oh, like Batman hasn’t turned you in several times before?”
Ivy licks her lips. “Only when I wanted him to.”
The vigilante rolls her eyes. “Look. I owe J--Red Hood a favor. So I’ll look into it and--”
“No. I’m coming with you.”
“Why?”
“I have to make sure you’re not giving me bad intel.” Before Batwoman can protest, Ivy continues. “You don’t want to disappoint Jason, do you?”
Is it Batwoman muffling her grumble, or is it her mask?
“This  can’t be the Batcave.”
“It’s not. It’s a safehouse. One I will be relocating after this.”
Ivy snorts, eyeing a piece of ancient weaponry, a Roman shield by the looks of it. It seems neither of them trusts the other. She’s fine with that. Not once has Ivy ever appreciated having someone depend on her. Well. There’s always an exception, isn’t there? But that exception is off doing fuck-knows-what, and Ivy’s relying on a godamn hero to help find her. “Nice place,” she murmurs.
“Don’t touch anything.” Batwoman says quickly, sitting down at her desk, bracing her chin on her elbows in front of her keyboard. It’s so... candid of her that Ivy catches herself staring. Apparently even superheroes let their shoulders roll forward sometimes. Ivy wonders what Batwoman looks like when she finally removes her cowl for the night. The red hair most definitely is a wig--real hair would never hold curls like that. Her hair is short underneath--putting it up would take too much time when an old lady needs help crossing the street. But other than the fullness of her red lips--Ivy has no idea who the woman is underneath. It’s going to drive her crazy--just like it did with her male counterpart. “CIA says she’s been “acquired for a black ops mission out of Bell Reve. But anything beyond that we’ll have to access on si--Are you even listening?”
Ivy shakes it off, pretending to examine her nails. “And why can’t I touch anything if you’re moving?” She’s trying to remember why Bell Reve sounds so familiar.
“I would like to keep some of it. I like the way it looks. And I don’t want your pheromones on everything.”
Then it clicks. “ Beautiful View. Is that another prison?”
Batwoman presses her lips together, then nods. “Blacksite.”
Fire roils in Ivy’s veins. “Of fucking course it is.” No accountability. No oversight. Whoever kidnapped Harley can do fuck-all with her and get away with it. And Ivy (and Batwoman) have barely scratched the surface.
“Doctor Isley?” Batwoman says, her voice rising and tense.
“Yeah?”
“Are you okay? The vines in my spider plant look about ready to strangle me.”
Ivy glances over at the chlorophytum comosum, whose children are quickly inching towards Batwoman and her slender neck. “She says you’re smothering her and her babies with the constant watering. And she prefers the name Billie.” Waving her hand, Ivy watches as the spider plants retreat back towards their home, leaving their caretaker well alive, for now.
 ------
The “site”  is a nondescript cubicle-laced hell in the basement of a social security office. Neither of them can go through the front door--well, Batwoman could if she’d take off her goddamn cowl, but that isn’t happening any time soon. So they pop open a basement window while the mailroom workers are on their lunch. They meander through the maze of modular walls and humming towers, dodging the occasional wayward paper crumble. “Our info should be in that corner office.”
It doesn’t look like much, just an otherwise empty desk with a computer that has dust gathering on its keyboard. The room lacks widows, and Ivy wrinkles her nose at the musty air. It could use a sathiphyullum or two to freshen up. Batwoman leans over the desk, firing up the computer and clacking at the keys. “Almost there….”
Ivy smells them before she hears them--donuts, coffee, and the musk of unwashed skin. Security. “Bats---”
Batwoman doesn’t even deign to look up. “Keep ‘em busy.”
“Poison Ivy?” The first guard fumbles to keep his walkie-talkie in his hands.
“Good afternoon,” she says neutrally. Batwoman gives her a steel look. “Work here often?”
His mouth hangs open, his thumb still glued to the talk button. He means to ask what she’s doing here, but all that comes out is: “Are you seeing anyone?”
Ivy snorts. “Maybe if you set that radio down, Casanova.”
As soon as he complies, the radio hisses with static. “Sending backup, over.”
“Ivy!” Bats hisses, glancing over at her.
She scoffs, listening for the tell-tale thunder of boots down the hall. “You know, this would be a lot easier if you weren’t hung up about property damage.”
“No one can know we’re here, Ivy.”
For the love of pete. Her heart already races out of control, and fuck if Ivy can slow it down now. Harley’s calming techniques be damned. “Well, you’re not going to like this either.”
“Like what?” Bats says flatly, in the middle of a download.
“You’ve only two other options, Batsy.”
“Enough with the nicknames, already.”
The backup pours into the room, and the room flashes white, and Ivy swears her eardrums explode with the noise. Her body reacts before her brain can, and the air’s filled with a dusty haze. Shit. Shit. Shit.
“Sex or murder?” Ivy calls out over the coughing militarized guards. Who the fuck guards a building with a SWAT team? Harley, what have you got yourself into this time?
“What?” Batwoman yells back, coughing too.
“SEX OR MURDER???”
“...Sex, I guess?”
Ivy holds up her hands, seeing half a dozen sights aimed at her chest. “It’s gonna be sex with me. You okay with that?”
Batwoman doesn’t look up, but she does stop typing. “Is this hypothetical or…?”
“Not anymore it isn’t.”
“Are you going to kill me otherwise?”
Ivy pinches her nose. “ NO. For crying out loud. But we don’t have time to get arrested.”
“HANDS ON THE GROUND.” Ivy and Bats comply. What else are they going to do while they hash this out?
The vigilante rolls her eyes. “Ugh. Fine.”
“Wait, really?”
“ Yes, Ivy. But only if it’s not around these idiots.”
“If you insist.” Ivy waves her hand as subtly as she can, letting the pheromones escape her skin like a fine mist.
“Uh, boss?” One of the sights drops to her hand. Shit.
Five more join the first. “Hey! None of that. ”Pigs never were known for their subtlety.
Ivy plasters on her most repentant expression. “Too late.” And she’s not lying. She can already see the green mist being pulled into the HVAC system. Which is another problem, but one she’s not going to worry about just yet.
“Plant Lady! Get that shit out of the air!”
One.
“No can do. Sorry.” Not sorry. Not one bit.
Two.
“I mean it, Lady. Or I’ll shoot!”
Three.
“ Lady, I swear I’ll--”
One piggy turns to the other. “Hey, Frankie?”
“Not now, Mitch.”
“There’s something I gotta tell you, Frankie.” Mitch takes his hand, fingering the clasps on the other man’s armor.
“Mitch? What hell-- mm. ”
Batwoman holds her flash drive in her hands, stunned by the site of an entire SWAT team playing tonsil hockey with one another. Ivy grabs her by the cape. “That’s our cue!” And she drags her to a cubicle by the stairs.
“Wouldn’t it be easier if we just left ?”
“‘Fraid not. Unless you packed an antidote to my new toxin with you.”
“Actually.” Batwoman fishes around in her utility belt. “Shit.” She turns on her, jabbing a finger in her face. “You were supposed to be on your best behavior.”
Ivy folds her arms, leaning against the cubicle wall. “Wasn’t expecting them to send the SWAT after us.”
Batwoman takes a deep breath. “So, how does this work, exactly?”
Licking her lips, Ivy answers. “There’s an antidote in my saliva, but it’s the most potent after I’ve had an orgasm.”
“Then why does it have to be sex?” Bat’s candor is refreshing, if not unexpected. “Why not jill yourself off and get it over with?”
“It’s not so simple,” Ivy chuckles. “My DNA is too dissimilar to yours--”
“But if you have my DNA, aka my saliva , with it--”
“An effective antidote.”
“An effective antidote that won’t cause you serious side effects.” She steps towards Bats, holding out her hand. “Any other questions before we start?”
Batwoman quirks her head at Ivy’s clinical tone. “Will Harley be okay with this?”
Ah. There’s the question of the day. Ivy closes her hand, examining her nails as she shrugs. “She’ll be alive . And free.”
Black gloved hands take her bare ones in their own, squeezing them gently. “You love her, don’t you.”
Ivy swallows, feeling as if the ground is moving beneath her boots. “I’d--” do anything for her , she means to say, and give Batwoman the vantage over her.
Batwoman seals her mouth over hers, muffling her reply. And to think this woman had the more ruthless reputation over her male counterpart. Her slips are soft and full, and the gloss slides between them and tastes like dark cherry. Intoxicating. Ivy dares to dart her tongue between them, and taste that poison just that much more.
Her pheromones work quickly as they enter Batwoman’s system. Her professional silence slips into wanton moans, and her hands work into the top of Ivy’s bust. She shivers, leaning into her touch, whispering encouragement. “Go ahead. Touch me everywhere you’d like.”
Nearby, an officer lets out a guttural cry, “Please, baby. Gimme more.”
That pulls Batwoman’s attention away, and Ivy drags it back with the drag of her nails across the material of her uniform. “Shh. Don’t mind them. They can’t even hear us over the sound of their own sex.”
Batwoman’s voice is husky as she pulls the top of Ivy’s corset down. “You sure?”
“Mmhm. Happens all the time.” Batwoman laughs at that, and moans as Ivy’s hands dally around her utility belt. “Now, aren’t these things booby trapped?”
Nodding, Batwoman whispers. “Security disengage: Code Sappho.” The utility belt snaps open falling into her hands.
Ivy laughs. “Oh my god .”
“Laugh all you want. I’m changing it as soon as this is over.”
Setting the belt aside, Ivy runs a finger down to Batwoman’s crotch. She drinks in the hiss from her lips, adding more pressure and more fingers, drawing heat between her legs and hopefully a little wetness. “You like that, don’t you.”
“Nn, fuck.” Batwoman leans into her touch. She’s a goner.
Ivy loves this part of the game, taking the most stubborn partner and watering their desire until it breaks them apart like tree roots in a sidewalk. It’s different from when she makes love to Harley. This is less like romance and more like chess. How many moves until she queens her king? “That’s it. Tell me what feels good.”
Batwoman’s knees go weak, and Ivy shoves her into a rolling chair. She presses the heel of her hand into her groin. “Oh g-- . Mm.” Gasping, Bats grabs Ivy's hand and shoves it into her own pants.
“Mm, demanding, aren’t you?” Ivy bites her ear lobe. “I like that.”
“Just get it o --oh. ” Bats leans into Ivy’s skillful touch, and she plays her like a violin, basking in the melody ringing from her lips. But Batwoman would never let a bad girl win, now would she?
Teeth graze Ivy’s neck, and the gasp slips from her mouth faster she can stop it.
“Oh fuck. Fuck yes. Right there.” It no longer registers which goon is saying what. They could all be chanting in unison for all Ivy knows. And she doesn’t care.
Batwoman licks the red line she’s created, and she squeezes Ivy’s breast through her uniform, just on the edge of too hard . She knows exactly what she’s doing. Check . Ivy catches her mouth, tasting her, drawing quick, tight circles around her clit. Just as Bats quakes in her arms, Ivy pulls back. “Oh come on, ” she groans.
“You get tied up a lot , don’t you?” Ivy glances at the zamioculus zamifolia, potted at the opposite desk corner. “You must enjoy it, then.” Batsy’s eyes widen as the vines stretch towards her. “Why else would you keep going to work?”
“It’s annoying as fuck--” The vines halt their progress, and shudder, and the Bat licks her lips. “--On the job.”
“That’s more like it.” The vines curl and twist around Bat’s wrists, binding her to the chair. Two more bind the chair, albeit loosely, to the desk. Let her move her hips, without letting her roll away. Once she’s in place, Ivy sways her hips, slowly undoing the zipper in her one piece suit. She lets it slide down her skin, and Ivy presses her bare breasts into Bat’s face, and just for a moment her mark closes her eyes, breathing her in.
Ivy frowns. This won’t do. This won’t do at all. She whisks the vines away, and Batwoman stares at her. Pulling back again, Ivy kicks her suit past her ankles, and tosses the keyboard aside. She sits on the desk with her legs spread wide. “I’m gonna need you to bed over, darling.”
“I’m not your darling.” Bats turns her chair around, leaning down, and breathing in Ivy’s musk. She barely remembers to tie her up again.
It occurs to Ivy that she hasn’t let anyone other than Harley get this close in a very long time. Usually Ivy leaves her marks to die after they get her pheromones in their system. There was that one time with Selina when one of their capers went sideways. While Ivy swore up and down, Catwoman pulled her goggles away from her eyes and kissed her full on the mouth. And things escalated from there. But that was before Harley.
Batwoman takes her sweet time tasting her, and Ivy finds herself gripping the desk with white knuckles. No. She won’t let her know how nice this feels-- oh. Oh God. “ Fuck.”
And then Batwoman pulls back. “Has Harley been gone that long?”....Did she say that last part out loud?
“Fuck you.”
Tilting her head to the side, Batwoman asks, “Isn’t that what we’re doing?”
Oh, but Ivy wants to wipe that coy smile off that face and replace it with her pleas for mercy. “Almost. Do you prefer to be teased or penetrated?” Ivy leans forward with her breasts pressed together, her words clinical and her grin anything but.
Bats dares to look her over, drinking the sheen on her skin. Her mouth never quite closes. She licks her lips, almost panting as she asks. “Must I choose?”
Ivy takes Bat’s chin in her hands. “Greedy, aren’t you?”
Whatever Bat’s snarky reply is, it’s lost in Ivy’s mouth as she claims her once more. This time neither of them hold back, devouring each other sloppily and noisily. Ivy trails kisses down Bat’s neck, and she summons another vine. The tiniest, softest leaf brushes across Bat’s clit. Batwoman cries out sharply, straining against her bonds.
“Ready?” Ivy pulls the vine back, examining the wetness dripping down its stalk. Oh, she’s ready all right. But Ivy wants to hear her say it.
“Ivy .”
Digging her fingers into Bat’s chin, Ivy nearly growls. “ Beg for it. ” The vine teases her clit faster, not harder, never quite getting her where she wants it. No, needs it.
Goosebumps run down Batwoman’s arms. “ Please.”
How fortunate that one of the cubicle dwellers has taken to growing a ficus ginseng microcarpa as a bonsai tree. Ivy draws out one of the aerial roots, sculpting it into the right shape. She slides a condom on it, safety first, of course, and lets the plant do the rest. It enters Bats slowly, slowly filling her up. Her eyes bulge as it pulls back, and pushes back in. No sound spills from her mouth, but her hips shift, thrusting with the plant as it fucks her.
Fuck, but Ivy’s mouth is dry. Her thighs twitch, rubbing together hungrily as she watches. She wants to touch herself so bad but she won’t give Batwoman that satisfaction. She won’t. She...
Batwoman’s face twists, and her mouth pinches shut. Her back arches and the chair squeaks across the floor. The groan rasps out of her mouth as her jaw drops into the perfect Oh.
“Not bad.” Ivy picks some lint off of her arm, releasing Batwoman from her bonds. “The antidote should be working now. Thank you for the view --”
The vigilante charges forward, gripping Ivy’s arms and pressing her back into the desk. Ivy watches the monitor crash to the floor. “I’m not done yet.” Batwoman’s signature lipstick has smeared across her chin in a very un-Batlike fashion. Her gloved fingers poke at Ivy’s clit, and she hisses. “Still sensitive, aren’t we? Still unsatisfied?” Her voice drops low and teasing, and fuck, Ivy won’t tell her to fuck off now .
Those same fingers that cast batarangs and grip grappling hooks dig into her, twisting and pulling. A chorus of cries ring out in harmony with her own, as Ivy lifts her hips off the desk, thrusting into Batwoman’s touch. “Yes. Yes.” Bats grins into Ivy’s mouth, drawing out her moans. Harley would do the same thing, but Ivy doesn’t want to think about her right now. She doesn’t want to think about anything at this moment. She draws up a vine, letting it coat itself in its own juices. Nice and easy , she tells herself, pulling away from Batwoman so she can look her in the eyes.
The vine slithers between her butt cheeks, small end first. Batwoman raises her eyebrows, but she doesn’t stop her delicious torment. In fact, she licks her lips a little. “Ah, fuck. Fuck. ” Her hand works in tandem with Ivy’s vines, pushing and pulling her hips back and forth like a rubber band. She chuckles into Ivy’s mouth, claiming it again, tasting it again. Only chuckling louder as Ivy begs and begs for release. Batmwoman clenches Ivy’s hip with her free hand, digging in her fingers so she feels that much more used . And fuck her, Ivy loves it.
If the pigs nearby are still fucking, Ivy can’t hear them.
She doesn’t even hear herself moaning into Batwoman’s ear. She only hears the slick as she’s fucked from both sides. And oh , the fullness of both . Ivy grips Batwoman’s shoulders to keep from shaking apart, and she bites the skin of her neck as she explodes with the heat of the sun.
Ivy stretches as the vine and Batwoman pull back, and she hums with satisfaction. Batwoman watches her with molten eyes. “Should we go agai--”
Ding! The computer chimes nearby.
Ivy sits up quickly, shaking off the last vestiges of her afterglow, slinking her one piece on and zipping it up the back. The zipper gets stuck, and before she can weigh the pros and cons of asking , gloved fingers finish the job for her. “Transfer’s done.”
“Finally.”  Ivy grabs her boots, marching to the office barefoot.
Batwoman clicks a few keys, and whistles . “Mission’s already done. She’s at Metropolis General.”
“She’s hurt !?” A branch snaps in a horrid crack behind them.
“She was, but she’s being discharged today. Better hurry.”
Batwoman doesn’t need to tell her twice.
Ivy pauses to don her boots in the hallway. Nearby she hears the sound of a half-a-dozen special response officers zipping up their flies. “Ah, fuck. I lost a button. Anyone see the button to my uniform?”
“Fuck off. At least you’re not missing a contact lens.”
“Hey! Who stole my gun?”
“Ah shit. Mine too.”
Leaving them behind, Ivy chuckles. The green always knows how to take good care of her. Soon she’ll return the favor.
------
Room 23. The hospital stretches on in an endless maze. Ivy forces herself not to run, to carry her empty clipboard like she’s a doctor making her rounds. Just act like she belongs there and no one will notice. So far so--
Ivy’s heart soars when she spots the room number.
“Harley!”
Harley shoots up in bed, swaying a little, but her shit eating grin tells Ivy everything will be okay. “Pretty girl!”
Ivy sits on the bed, planting a shy kiss on Harley’s lips. “I need to tell you something.” She explains the events of the past 24 hours, and Harley’s eyes go wide. Twisting her hands, Ivy waits an eternity for Harley to reply.
“Was she good? Do you think she’d be down for a threesome?”
“Harley!”

So, me and @ThatWeirdPepperMint were wondering if you could do this request. Jason one day sneaks out and goes to a nearby ally where he finds Marinette not knowing that the fam was following. He asks Mari about buying mini guns and she gets them out of her heels, he ends up with gun-heels and wears them as as Red Hood. In that week all the fam got something from her. Tim got usb-nails. Dick got jetpack heels and retractable zip line watch. Damian got infi-purse. And Bruce got a tiara-shield.
Note: I totally did not look up Totally Spies gadgets for inspiration for some of the weapons.
It was Dick who suspected that something was up with Jason. The second oldest Wayne had been disappearing more often than usual only to return with a weapon he has never seen it in the stores. He tried to get information out of his brother about where he was but was only meet with the usual stream of threats or a careless shrug before disappearing for days on end.
The next to figure something was off, was Damian. Though for the youngest Wayne he had little care for his second oldest brother. Damian had run into Jason holding his newest weapon that was completely out of character for him. It was some kind of belt that had an expandable cable bungee. The belt did not go with his Red Hood outfit at the time, but before Damian had the chance to interrogate the male about the item, Jason had disappeared.
Then there was Tim and he had actually found out by going to get a late-night coffee and somehow ended up bumping into his predecessor, who was coming out of an alleyway with a bracelet in hand. At first, the coffee addict didn’t think much of until the idea that Jason had a secret lover pop into his brain. Instead of letting that idea down, he ended up entering a constantly dead-end investigation.
It was no shock that everyone else involved with the Wayne family's nightly activities was also intrigued by Jason’s newest additions of weapons. However, what shocked them all was when Stephanie (Steph) returned with Jason with a pair of diamond earrings. Of course, speculations began to grow among everyone, but when Spoiler ended up using the same new pair of earrings as a cutting tool they knew that whoever was making these weapons just so happened to include Steph as a client.
For half a year, they have tried to find this unique weapon dealer that Jason (and sometimes Steph) happily order from, only to be met with more dead ends. Fortunately for them, their search will soon come to an end.
Jason had broken his latest gadget, a wristwatch, on his latest mission. Dick managed to gather the immediate family (i.e. Tim, Damian, and Bruce) to follow the person behind the Red Hood anti-hero. However, Jason was streets smart. He zigged through the city; they had nearly lost him until the anti-hero had reached an alleyway just blocks away from crime alley. The family watch over the scene on the rooftops staying in the shadows.
Jason had entered from the alley’s opening and is immediately greeted by a shield of fog. The anti-hero doesn’t seem deterred from the scene before him.
“Arme chanceuse.” He states in the direction of the fog. Jason was no idiot; he knew his family is watching him, but he just couldn’t find any fucks to give at the moment.
The Batfam is shocked by the appearance of a female, looking no older than Damian. This female has long dark hair curled at the end with a mix of pink and red highlights. She was wearing in a two-piece dress, the top being a long sleeve laced with an intricate design as her skirt had a waist-high slit showcasing a pair of dark leggings and black heeled combat boots with pink and red shoestrings.
“You’re not alone, Jay-Jay.” She says crossing her arms and taking a sit in a chair that was behind a red and black table.
“Don’t care enough, Pixie. They’ve been trying to find this out for six months and at this moment, I don’t have any fucks to give. So, can you help?” Jason states causing the infamous weapon dealer to smirk.
“What you need.” She sasses back to her client.
“Miniguns the best you got.” He says giving her a knowing look.
The dealer sighs and puckers her lips. “I was saving these for Steph, but you apparently need them more.” The fog grows around the dealer and it fades away, in her hands are a pair of black heels.
“Uh, what the fuck?”
“Do you want the guns or not? The heels are the barrels, there is a safety mechanism outside the heels that you can access to minimize unwanted triggers. The magazine is on the shank. Not my best work but these combat heel boots can get the job done.” She explains gesturing to every area she talked about.
Jason picks up the heels and examines them. “Now I understand why these were meant for Steph. Thanks, Pixie, I’ll take good care of them.”
“You better!” She cries out before continuing with, “The amount of material and thinking to make them work took ages, Jay, ages!”
Jason chuckles before wishing his dealer a goodbye.
Before the Batfam could incept the two, the fog blocks their vision and suddenly it was just Jason alone in an alleyway looking the same expect the newest addition of a pair of heeled boots on his feet.
They did not see Jason again until the patrol as Red Hood.
“So, Hood, where did you get the heels? They’re looking pretty nice.” It was Nightwing that would ask first.
“Like you don’t know.” The anti-hero grunts and struts away from his oldest brother. Nightwing stares aghast and somewhat offended.
At first, the boys thought the heels were nothing but a bad joke but to see Red Hood in action, taking down each of his opponents, they knew this for real. Maybe, just maybe, they should talk to whoever this Pixie is that Jason gets his weapons from.
It was only a few nights later when the bat family corner Jason, place him in a dark room (tied up of course) and stood over him. Jason glares at his family and mentally thinks of ways to get rid of them all. The option of murder was high on his list of suggestions.
“Who’s Pixie?” Dick’s voice pipes causing every muscle in Jason to just give up. Seriously all of this just to get information about his weapon dealer.
That night led to the family officially meeting the person Jason calls Pixie the next day.
Pixie stares at her favorite customer with an eyebrow raised and arms folded against her chest. The greetings were stale only met with grunts and an awkward smile from Dick.
“Hi, I’m Marinette, you don’t have to call me Pixie, but I have some rules when it comes to doing business with me. I don’t make standard weapons. I only deal with those who deserve it, and money is the least of my concerns though it is welcomed.” Immediately, they knew they had just entered a business. A business that Jason, and in extension Steph, has been familiar with for months.
She gives them the secret word that would “summon” her for business. She only deals at night and at various alleyways. They also found out that she has a life outside of all this and sometimes would have to cancel if that was the case Jason would tell them. Wrapping up this tremendous moment, she gives them a week to figure out what they would like before disappearing in the fog that brought her there.
Throughout the week, each of the bat members tried to convince Jason to give them Marinette’s current location, and then go to Steph when Jason wasn’t bothered to be around them.
Tim went to Steph for Marinette's latest location. He ends up placing an order for a USB drive; what he got was beyond his coffee-addicted brain.
“This USB nail is the perfect disguise for quick transfers, it works just like any USB out there and looks and feels like a fake nail. You can transfer up to 128 gigabits. Though be careful, the nail can break with an excessive amount of force.”
Since that day, Tim has been using the nails for hacking or work assignments. He begins to swear by them.
On multiple occasions, Tim swears he had seen Dick wearing Red Hood’s gun boots and a longer version of his nails on a couple of occasions. Dick denies it every time, but they all knew the truth.
It took a while before Dick had come up with his ideal first weapon from Marinette. He wanted something grand and out of this world.
“You want jet pack heels and a zip line wristwatch,” Marinette states slowly trying to wrap her head around her newest order. It’s not something she isn’t used to, but the way he had explained it to her with this silly look on his face just creeped her out. “Okay.”
That night when Nightwing was on patrol, he was having a ball showcasing his new weapons. Batman had yelled at the male upon realizing that he was wearing something that was impractical. Nightwing flies away with his jet pack heels activated. Batman could only sigh and wonder how this even happened.
The next person to receive their Marinette original was Damian. The youngest Wayne had met with the weapon dealer in secret hoping that his family didn’t catch sight of him. He could only imagine the horror that would come with them finding out.
If it wasn’t for that fact that Marinette looked around Damian’s age, it looked like a drug-dealing going on as Damian was dressed in all black and a hood covering his face. Upon seeing him, Marinette managed to hold in her laughter.
“You want an infinity purse, should I even ask why?”
“It’s better for you not to know.”
Marinette accepts that answer and disappears into the fog. She comes out with a tote with Robin’s emblem in addition to her own. She hands the bag over to the Wayne and explains the limitations the bag carries.
It is said that Damian has pulled various weapons on different people when they make fun of the bag. Some make it out without a scratch while others don’t even speak of the incident anymore.
The most shocking of appearances came from Bruce Wayne, himself.  He had come alone to meet with Marinette. At first, she thought it was a gift for the girls or a really bad joke with some hidden scheme behind it. Once she thought of it, it wasn’t a bad idea.
“Are you sure? This could ruin your bad boy aesthetic.” Marinette says giving the tall man an out.
“Yes.” Short and simple. Marinette nods and disappears into the fog.
When she returns, in her hands is a solid black tiara along with it are diamonds in the shape of bats. Sliding it across the table Marinette begins to discuss the weapon. The tiara can turn into a shield with a twist of a diamond. Bruce graciously accepts the weapon before testing it out. Upon seeing it in its shield form, Bruce begins to wonder what age the dealer is and how can he get her to join the family officially.
After everyone in the bat family received weapons that aren’t usual apart of their list of gadgets the league members begin to question their sanity. They thought Bruce was joking when they saw him with the tiara, but once it dawned on them that he never jokes, it was Flash that went around screaming his head off.
“You can rule the world, Pixie,” Jason says joining the small female in the darkness as she watches the bad guys being taken down by her own weapons.
“Eh, we knew this day would come.” She says with a smile on her face.
“Damn, Pixie, you know B-man is already in the process of trying to adopt you. You fit all the Wayne requirements to being adopted.”
“I think he already has. He’s been visiting more and more often with Steph under the pretense of getting new weapons. Damian also comes and goes as he pleases, he’s like a cat.” Marinette says glancing at the second oldest Wayne.
“Welcome to the family, sis."

ficlet ft batmen and robins
I couldn’t get this out of my head, SO. this is set pre-DCeased/normal timeline (for Bruce, Dick and Tim) and post-DCeased: Hope at World’s End #5 (Damian and Steph)
*
It’s a totally normal evening in the Cave, Bruce is at the computer doing some detective work, Dick and Tim are sparring but mostly gossiping about their various teammates, and then an alert goes off.  Temporal anomaly.
Dick’s all casual, “Haven’t had one of those in a while,” and Tim’s curious, because time travel is always interesting. Often frustrating, always headache-inducing, but definitely more interesting than their previous conversation.
There’s a shimmer, and a portal is appearing. Bruce stands up, puts on his cowl, and Tim and Dick join him, flanking him on either side.  Then two figures emerge, and the colors are familiar: black and grey and the bat ears; red and yellow and green; but it’s clearly not Bruce, and definitely not either of them.
Batman is tiny, and Tim has absolutely no doubt who he is -- Damian, near enough to the same size as he is now that Tim has a terrible, terrible feeling about the near future. Robin is a head taller and blonde and Steph’s smiling at them, but it’s-- it’s the same smile he’s only seen when she’s pretending like she’s not heartbroken.
Bruce is stock-still, and Tim can do the math, can figure out why Damian might be wearing the suit. Knows Bruce would already have come to the conclusion.  He shoots a glance at Dick, unsure what to say.
It doesn’t matter, because Steph beats them to it. “Go on, hug him,” she says, shoving Batman’s shoulder-- Damian’s shoulder. “I’ll explain.”
Then Damian’s running towards them, flinging his arms around Bruce. His shoulders are shaking, and Tim realizes he’s crying. Damian’s saying things to Bruce, quiet and quick and private, full of emotions that Tim kind of assumed the kid didn’t even have. He’s so caught up in that that Steph’s words feel like they’re coming from a different world. He supposes that really, they are. “So here’s the thing. The world ended.”
Dick says, “Again?” like it’s time for a joke, and Steph’s smile cracks, just a bit.
“We’re gone, aren’t we?” Tim says, because Steph looks like she’s staring at ghosts.
“You went quick,” she says, like that’s any reassurance. “Most of humanity did. Earth’s done for. They’re building arcs-- apparently the best idea we could come up with was to abandon the planet altogether and hope the virus doesn’t follow us to a new one.”
Damian pulls slowly away from Bruce, and then flings himself at Dick. He doesn’t say as much, because Dick is the one telling him how much he loves him, how proud of him he is. Bruce looks shell-shocked.
“I’m guessing that you think we  stand a better chance of stopping it before it happens,” Tim said, trying to focus on Steph. It’s strange, seeing her as Robin, trying to picture this strange new Batman and Robin, but… Tim is surprised that he doesn’t feel jealous. Instead he can understand, can picture the terrible confluence of events that would lead to this partnership, and from the way Damian’s expressing emotions, flinging himself into sentiment over the mission -- it seems to be working.
“Hopefully, but honestly, it’s probably doomed,” Steph said with an easy shrug, as if she wasn’t talking about the apocalypse, the destruction of the planet, of abandoning hope. “If it works, yay, but the kid needed to see his dad one last time before we leave everything behind.”
Tim blinked, and as Steph explained what had happened and how to avoid it, Damian hugged him, too, tight and fast, and then straightened up, wiped away the tears.
“We don’t have much longer,” he informed Steph, in that inflection of voice that always made Tim want to throw things at him, but in the cowl, what should have looked like a kid playing dress-up was suddenly-- not.
“I will keep this future from happening,” Bruce says in a voice that sounds harsh until Tim realizes that he’s speaking through a tightened throat, jaw tight, emotions barely held at bay.  He looks as though he already wants to hug Damian again.
Damian says, “I hope so. But even if you do, it will simply create an alternate timeline where things will be-- better.”
He spares a second to glance up, as if imagining his younger, more innocent self upstairs.  Steph wraps an arm around his shoulder, squeezes, and then faces Bruce directly for the first time.
“I’m taking care of him,” she says, and it’s a promise and a update all in one, and the dynamic of this Batman and Robin is crystal clear to them all -- Damian’s resolve and training and pledge to uphold the legacy contrasted with Steph’s determination and emotional experience and refusal to back down in the face of certain doom.  “As long as I’m able, I’ll try.”
Their dynamic makes absolute sense and makes Tim’s head hurt all at the same time.
“Thank you,” Bruce says, and then turns to Damian, like he’s going to say more, but Damian shakes his head. “You already said everything that needed to be said.”
A future Bruce’s dying words to his son, and Damian doesn’t want them underwritten.  Tim wonders if he’d do the same, in that position.
“Thirty seconds,” Steph says, looking at a dial on her wrist-- analog,he notices, and Tim can think of a hundred things that they need to back up, that they should change now that this threat is apparent.  Neither Steph nor Damian has given a timeline, but Damian himself is a glaring warning sign.   It’s close, and they have to stop it.
Then Steph surprises him by throwing herself at him in a hug, at Bruce, then even Dick, who looks surprised. “Keep this from happening, okay?” she says, glancing back at Damian, who is staring at them like he’s memorizing every feature, every movement, every sound.  “Please. Don’t let our fate be yours.”
Then the shimmering portal reappears, and Steph is pulling Damian through. They can faintly hear her say, “We can’t just stay, Dames, we have too much work to do.”
It hadn’t occurred to Tim that that could even be an option for them, and the second the portal disappears, he feels the ache of their loss, the pressing and driving urge to save them.
“Write everything down,” Bruce says immediately, opening a file on the computer and beginning to type.”Both of you, so we can compare. I may have-- “ he stops to clear his throat. “I may have missed a few details.”
Tim can still practically feel the ghost of the hugs he’d received, the weight of Batman and Robin’s arms around him, and knows exactly what Bruce means.
Dick said, quietly, “It must happen soon. Damian wasn’t any bigger than he is now.”
Tim nodded. “We can stop this.”
And tried not to think about Damian’s words, about knowing that they had managed to bring themselves back to simply -- warn them, to create a new timeline, knowing that they themselves were doomed to their own hellish one.
Had brought themselves back just to get one last goodbye.
