Marvel’s put one member of the newest X-Men team up for a vote that ends on February 6. Polaris is one of those options.
The short version of this post: I encourage people to vote for her.
The long version of this post goes into why. And related considerations.
Before I begin, there are two pieces of information garnered from tweets by Leah Williams to bear in mind for this topic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There we go.
Now then. As any of you who follow me know, I think Lorna's had an overall terrible time of it these past few years. If this was 2014/2015, right after Lorna led All-New X-Factor, had a good showing in Secret Wars House of M, and a couple years after her origin story got told, I would probably say she shouldn't be on the poll at all. I would say other characters need it more. Even outside of this, I've always said I see Lorna as an A-lister that Marvel constantly treats like a D-lister. As such, I think Marvel should be using her so well and so much that she shouldn't even be on a poll like this.
But we have to deal with what is, not what should be. Fact of the matter is, Marvel's spent these past few years undermining her. Reducing her to a supporting character for the stories of male characters, mainly Havok with a little of Magneto and a few more besides. Leaving her off the X-women variant cover in 2019 when they had plenty of room to include her, and had others like Magik, Dani Moonstar and Mystique. Completely excluding her from Empyre: X-Men, where she had a HUGE stake in it due to Wanda's and Genosha's involvement. I could list a lot else, but those are a few examples.
Because of this, I say Lorna being on the poll is just fine, and she should be voted on.
But then we get to the question: why vote for her? What would happen if she did come out on top?
Why Vote for Lorna
Williams' tweets there give us some insight. Lorna would be on both books, and her role would be more as an advisor than a regular team member in the field. So let's talk about why this would be a good thing for all parties involved.
One, I think Lorna in the role of advisor is far, FAR more respectful to her history and experience than the current status quo. So much so that I'd support it even if she didn't end up on X-Men. Her current placement as simply a team member puts her "under" Northstar, and with Lorna doing nothing else outside the book and it being titled X-Factor, means Lorna has effectively been "demoted" from her prior position on X-Factor as a team leader. Advisor is more appropriate for Lorna in a way that would not undermine Northstar.
Two, I interpret this "Lorna would be an advisor, not doing field work" angle as meaning she would have less panel time. Otherwise, why would joining X-Men mean her role has to change? Therefore, if she DOES have less panel time on X-Factor, it could open a slot for another character - including one of the other characters in this poll - to join X-Factor as a team member in her place.
Three, Lorna being on both X-Men and X-Factor would actually be more beneficial to X-Factor than if Lorna was ONLY on X-Factor. Think about the casual reader. They decide to jump in. They see Lorna on X-Men. They like what they see, decide they want to see more of her, learn she shows up on X-Factor and starts buying that book too. Whereas if Lorna is ONLY on X-Factor, there's no bridge from X-Men to X-Factor. No reason to check it out. One less sale and reader for X-Factor.
Four, note the talk of collaboration. Now, I'm not going to get into all the things I can say on my views of X-Factor here. But what I will say is that it opens the door to both writers improving on their treatment of Lorna. The two points of comparison - X-Men and X-Factor - means they can learn from each other on what works and what doesn't, and figure it out much faster than just one writer.
There may be other potential good outcomes to this. I'll add if I think of any. I encourage others to add theirs.
Next, I want to go into the poll, with a dose of reality/warning on expectations.
Lorna’s Chances
This poll is heavily slanted against Lorna. Not from any lack of interest or potential, but because of how Marvel’s used and treated Lorna these past few years. Here’s the dive.
First off, a lot of people have already said they won’t vote for Lorna because she’s “already on X-Factor.” It doesn’t matter where she is, how she’s being used. Simply being on a book, ANY book, is enough for them not to vote for her compared to other characters who aren’t on a book.
Second, many X-Factor fans have a vested interest in Lorna not joining X-Men. Keeping her exclusive to X-Factor lets them feel like X-Factor is a special place where she can be found (read: exploited) for their book, with the writer able to do whatever she wants with Lorna. This means not only are those X-Factor fans not going to vote for Lorna (whereas they might have if she was never on X-Factor in the first place), they’re also likely to try and dissuade other people from voting for Lorna.
Third, Marvel’s really, REALLY tried to bury her and misrepresent her these past few years. The same problems I cited earlier in the post - use as supporting character for men, exclusion from things she should be part of, ignoring key character history like the Genoshan genocide - can leave casual readers completely unaware of who Lorna actually is and how Marvel SHOULD be treating her. As a result, many will follow the attitude Marvel’s current leadership has that she’s “not interesting enough” and end up voting for someone else.
Finally, this poll ends on February 6. What are the odds of a majority of Lorna fans seeing this poll and voting on it by then, when Marvel’s given fans plenty of reason not to keep in tune with their activity?
All of this assumes the poll is legit rather than a PR scheme where it’s already been decided, and that the poll software has tools like IP detection to ensure a single fan or group of fans can’t go on and spam votes for their faves.
Still, with all of that in mind?
Vote for Polaris
Think of this poll like U.S. elections. Even if it is rigged or stacked against her, there’s more reason to vote for her than not.
Worst case scenario, you only “wasted” a few seconds shooting off a useless vote. Best case scenario, she has a better chance than we all thought and she actually wins.
Regardless of outcome, you’re showing your interest and intent by voting for her.
So yeah. Post done. Head over there and vote!

May I request a Madelyne Pryor x Male Reader x Jean Grey? Where the reader is the brother of Cyclops, Havok, and Vulcan? The reader is best friends with Jean and has feelings for her but knows he can’t act upon them since Scott is with Jean, later when Jean dies after becoming the dark Phoenix, everyone is devastated especially the reader but is strong so he can support Scott. Reader life goes well and is happy Scott found Madelyne and married her and has a son being Nathan(Cable). (1/4)

Note
Hellions just seemed like Lorna blindly supporting Alex again. It could have been worse, but bleh. I hope her role in X-Men is much better.
Agreed on all counts.
I think this is Marvel's next step in trying to force the Havok relationship back on Lorna again to satisfy their nostalgia and male fantasy wish fulfillment desires. Their first step was putting in constant reminders of it almost everywhere Lorna appears to ensure she can't do anything (and readers can't read her doing anything) without him coming up at least once. This second step is trying to normalize Lorna and Havok interacting more before forcing the relationship again, since it would make readers more likely to accept it and less likely to give needed backlash.
That Marvel's completely incapable of letting Lorna do a single thing without throwing Havok into the mix in itself shows Lorna and Marvel both aren't ready for the relationship to be put back together. If they can't go any meaningful amount of time without forcing reminders of Havok on Lorna, then they haven't yet learned to recognize Lorna's worth and possibilities as her own character. Their desperation to force the relationship just illustrates their lack of respect for Lorna.
Not to mention a complete lack of faith in their oh-so-beloved pairing managing to survive Lorna not being treated like a trophy girlfriend or arm candy that exists entirely to support Havok.
If the pairing is as great as people at Marvel apparently think it is, why are they so afraid of letting Lorna be her own character and do her own thing for a while without constantly bringing up Havok every five seconds?
That said, I'm going to hope - and extend an olive branch - to the prospect that Lorna on the new X-Men book might be different in a good way she's sorely needed.

It’s taken me a while to get to posting this because I’ve been tired and busy. Nobody else has posted it (that I’m aware of, based on search results), so I guess I’m the first.
I don’t really care about the whole Empyre event, but in terms of Lorna, here’s the solicitation for the first issue of the X-Men mini.
Plant people from outer space have come to Earth and, wouldn't you know it, they just happen to be here when millions of mutants rise as undead creatures hungry for human flesh. The X-Men return to Genosha in a tale so crazy, it's taking the entire writing crew of the X-Men line to tackle it!
Those of you who’ve talked to me and watched my posts for a while have seen me rant about Marvel ignoring Genosha in Lorna’s history, focusing on what she could do for male characters (mainly Havok) while having other characters talk about it.
By the looks of it, Marvel at least appears to finally be acknowledging this part of Lorna’s history.
Now, I want to say that I have a lot of trouble trusting Marvel these days. I’ve been burned enough, especially after 2015, that it feels stupid and dangerous to trust the company. My mind immediately goes to “Wait, what if it looks like they’re doing that, but all they really do is have her talk about her dad the whole time and pretend she was never there?” They’ve done that before.
This time, I’m going to... cautiously trust Marvel.
I can’t just dive headlong into this and fangasm because of my past experiences with Marvel. Only repeated good experiences can get me there. But I do deeply, sincerely hope this turns out to be good for Lorna. I really want that. So I’m going to trust that Marvel intends to do right by Lorna this time.
And when I say “do right by,” I don’t mean “she has to be the most important character of the whole mini and its story must revolve completely around her.” Of course I’d love it if that happened (pending how it’s done), but while Genosha is perhaps the most important thing in Lorna’s history AND she had an essential presence there that should never be ignored or downplayed, it’s also true that Genosha isn’t hers alone.
Having said that, I want to talk about the cover.
I love it. And I think Lorna is done perfect on it. For starters, she has the iconic costume, which is so important for readers to recognize her - both fans of the character (so they know to pick it up) and the average consumer who may not realize her deep connection to Genosha.
She’s the most dynamic character on it. The other characters are mostly just standing there, but Lorna, she’s got her hair and hand up as if to suggest she’s using her powers. The way her hair curls is especially lovely.
Also, she’s right in the middle. She’s not way in the back where people won’t see her, but she’s also not in the “viewer’s” face. Personally, I think that she’s “behind” the characters up front but not covered up implies her as a more subdued but central figure to Genosha. She may not get immediate recognition, but even when she doesn’t, she’s still important.
The combination of her placement and her dynamic pose are very effective in drawing attention toward her. I think, moreso than anything else on the cover. And I think it’s an excellent example of an artist using multiple techniques to capture attention. Lorna’s not the biggest character in size on the cover. She’s not the “most popular” character. She’s not up front. But by blending elements, she stands out - without looking out of place. The artist successfully drew attention to Lorna without it looking forced.
In sum, if the actual contents and coming work continue to look good for Lorna, this will be the first thing from Marvel I buy since Fall/Winter 2018. And first thing associated with Disney in some way since start of 2019.
That wraps my post. Here’s to hoping this turns out to be the first good Lorna thing I’ve seen from Marvel in a long time. 💚

Tweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeets.
You’re getting more this time if you read this post.
By the way, here’s what I use as search terms when I look for these tweets.
polaris x-men
polaris marvel
lorna x-men
lorna marvel
lorna dane
On rare occasions, I’ll go outside them, but these are my regular search terms.
Tumblr media
Just another case of Lorna included among characters as a fave.
Tumblr media
Damn right she does!
Tumblr media
This is the ever-cool @dipolarismoment on Twitter again! And I agree, it’d be cool for Lorna to get her PhD.
At the same time, it reminds me of a discussion I had on Twitter (you’ll notice I usually don’t include my own tweets/replies on these lists). Someone was complaining about Carol Danvers’ power grid card putting her intelligence too low. I pointed out the power grids seem to be bullshit more often than not.
If you look at the Marvel wikia for example. Polaris and Havok both have the exact same Master’s degree, yet somehow, Lorna is just “Normal” (2) intelligence while Havok gets to be “Learned” (3). Then if you look at Jean Grey, she’s ALSO “Learned” (3) even though she’s only college-level education.
In other words, power grids are just yet another place where whoever makes them and oversees them can pretend their bias toward characters (for or against) is more objective than it actually is. “Look at this concrete number, you have to write her as being only that smart, no smarter.”
Tumblr media
I happen to like the idea of Lorna being bi.
Aside from me just simply liking it, the only partner she’s ever been allowed to have in 50 years is Havok, and her interactions with men have been tainted by that history (too much of ANXF #4-6 was pretty clearly treating Gambit like another Havok in her life). Same as how I think Lorna would be best off with a female writer, I think being in relationship with another woman might result in writers writing her better in relationship. They might stop thinking of how “masculine” (read: dominant) her partner has to look around her and try to write her as an actual character in her own right.
Tumblr media
Awwwww yeah.
Tumblr media
I never thought about this before, but I’ve decided that it explains why I have this song on my smartphone. I mostly listen to songs with female singers (nothing against male ones, I just like them more; may have been a result of coming of age in the time of Lilith Fair), so songs with male singers is rare for me to have on my phone.

Two more tweets about how Lorna should get a solo, and seriously, it really is time. Moreso than literally any other time in her entire character history, and moreso than a lot of other characters that have been given solo books just because someone at Marvel likes the character regardless of interest anyone has in reading them.
Not only is she more popular than ever and prominent on TV, again, it’s her 50th anniversary in October. Literally everything has aligned for this to be the time Marvel should give her a solo.
Considering they gave Scarlet Witch a solo and heavily promoted it despite low sales, and they both let Havok hijack her big return on X-Men Blue and are giving HIM team book he leads, I’m going to see the lack of a solo and nothing major for Lorna for her anniversary by October as Marvel continuing to show bias against her. She’s gone most of her existence undervalued and ignored. She deserves something for her 50th.

I continue to see this sort of request. It’s interesting how much people want Lorna and Wanda to interact - moreso Lorna coming to MCU than the other direction. I think the perception is “Lorna is a great character, she should be alongside these other great characters in a cinematic universe compared to others I could mention.”
Tumblr media
This makes me think of how some fans go with Lorna Maximoff, which is a pretty neat name change. I don’t know how I’d feel about if that became canon somehow, but it’s interesting as fanon.
Tumblr media
Now here’s something worth talking a bit about.
Their relationships are all complicated because Lorna only finally got Magneto being her father restored in the past decade, but she was the first actual intended child before her forced retcon and before Wanda and Pietro were revealed as Magneto’s kids (and not forced retcon to not be).
As such, it’s only in the past decade that Lorna and Pietro both using green has been an issue.
Also interesting, one version of coloring for Wanda’s first appearance gave her a green costume as well. So basically Wanda and Pietro really really wanted to be Lorna even before she existed. :P
There’s also one panel out there from the time she was on Genosha (I think an AU; been a while since I saw it) where she was wearing Wanda’s old costume in green. They loev stealing each others’ clothes and colors.
Seriously though, one final possible reason behind giving Pietro a green costume is to try to make it harder to undo their forced retcon and for fans and readers to see them all visually as siblings. It’s the same reason Enchantress was made to look like Polaris for an Axis cover, and why they tried to introduce a new “sister” called “Luminous” with blue color scheme post-Axis. They know the color coordination matters and they’re trying to undermine it cause they don’t like all of them together as a family and don’t want fans to see them that way.
Tumblr media
I like that Lorna is specifically cited as a possible skin. And frankly, if she was, I’d actually be interested in trying out Fortnite. Right now I don’t really care. I’m in the middle of Far Cry 5 and I have a long backlog of other games to play, on top of others I still need to buy.
Tumblr media
Last one. I see tweets fairly often of people responding to green hair by saying the person looks like Lorna. To me, that says a lot about how iconic Lorna’s become and becoming, especially with the green hair. They could’ve said she looks like Rydia (FF4), or Aphrodite IX, or Agent Brand, etc, but they went with Lorna.
Thanks for joining me for another list of tweets! See you next time, same Polaris Time, same Polaris Channel!

Why Polaris should have a female writer
I’ve had someone (not here, elsewhere) say that my suggestion that perhaps Polaris should have a female writer and no male writers is extreme. It’s not. Here’s why.
Polaris’ key problem in comics is that she’s always written as if her only value comes from being a supporting character for men around her. Mainly Havok, with the risk rising with Magneto. Who writes all these issues? Men. Men tend to default into things that benefit men. They come into these stories from a male perspective, looking at characters with a male gaze, coming up with ideas that ultimately feed into the interests of men - both male readers and male characters.
This is less likely to happen with women.
Women come into these stories with the lived experience of being a woman in the modern world. They know the barriers they have to overcome, the (usually negative and harmful) assumptions made about their capabilities, the difference between love vs lust, how awful and harmful controlling men can be, and so much else. First and foremost, women know what it’s like to have to fight back against people underestimating your worth.
All of these things are focal issues for Polaris. The character destruction she endured for decades, and still suffers from to this day, can ultimately be described as the damage of sexism.
Men will never fully understand this. They can try, and they might come pretty close, but there’s nuance men will never fully grasp. Men are not living as women. They only witness the lives of women from the outside, in the fleeting moments where women are in their presence. They don’t deal with catcalling or doxxing/revenge porn or “nice guys” as women deal with. They don’t have to worry about bosses perceiving qualities they would normally see as “powerful” in men as “bitchy” when displayed by women.
Lorna would benefit greatly from a female writer because a female writer would actually understand what she’s had to put up with as a character and have much better ideas of how to correct those problems.
Men do not. And I expect X-Men Blue will be a strong example of my point here with future issues.
