Alright, so, I’ve been toying with the idea of Ozzie’s Seraphim Royalty parents, since in one classification of demons he, alongside Beelzebub and Leviathan, were Seraphim princes. I have kind of combined a few different ones for the sake of it, to be honest. Demonology has always been a special interest of mine so this is fun for me. Regardless, Abstemiounessa (Ab-Steam-Ee-Oh-Ness-Uh) and Valore (Vale-Ore) are two of my newest OCs.

This is going to be the first fic in a series of two, though I dunno if the second one is going to be a longshot or a chapter fic if I’m honest. At any rate, I love these two even if they’re absolutely assholes. They’re very pretty assholes.

“Absolutely fucking not.” Ozzie’s voice was a loud, commanding growl, but Fizzarolli didn’t back down this time. He knew Ozzie would never hurt him, and so he felt comfortable in his defiance, standing his ground on the center island in the kitchen. Extending his legs, he kept himself just slightly lower than Ozzie’s eyes, his own cut into glowing slits as he pointed at him with a curved arm and sharp index finger.

“I’m going with you. You can’t just go to Earth alone!” Not like this, I don’t trust them went unsaid, because that was something wildly inappropriate for their relationship. It wasn’t like an imp could withstand a holy weapon; If Ozzie’s parents wanted to kill their son, the best Fizzarolli could do was be a demonic meat shield and hope for the best.

Anything for Ozzie.

The removal of his horns, arms, and legs in the name of lust, in the name of Ozzie’s pleasure, proved that, if nothing else. His devotion was wholly and intensely dedicated to Asmodeus, King of Lust, the best lay, the demon whose pores oozed sex appeal, the demon that understood him better than anyone. Olli chased any form of gratification, physical or otherwise, and his dogged faithfulness to Ozzie was due in part to that. Once one fucked literal lust himself, that was it. Nothing and nobody else could compare, and Ozzie had been gifted Olli’s virginity. He’d never been with anyone else, and he didn’t want to be.

“I’ll be fine, Olli Baby, it’s not that big a–”

“Don’t. You. Dare.” The authoritative tone from the imp before him took Ozzie aback, and he gazed at him with all three sets of eyes filled with intense scrutiny. Fizzarolli wasn’t the type to challenge him very often, he usually stuck to following Ozzie’s lead in most things, but if he put his foot down, he meant it, “I’m going with you and that’s the fucking end of it.”

For a moment, Ozzie simply gawked at him, his lips parted slightly, and it was the bull to move first. He nuzzled Fizzarolli’s cheek, followed by the goat head, and finally, the main one followed suit. The kiss he gave his imp was gentle, searching, needing something, some answer to a question malformed and ugly in his head. It lasted too long, made the air polluted by the acrid scent of upset that brought tears to Olli’s eyes, and finally, Ozzie pulled back.

“I… I don’t wanna see you get hurt.” He said this like he knew it was guaranteed that violence would befall them, and Fizzarolli thought he might be sick.

“So you know you’re going to get hurt, and you’re going alone anyway,” The thought made him gag and he had to take a moment to get himself back under control. Tears dripped down his cheeks that he willed away with all his heart but couldn’t stop them despite his best attempt, “And you want to leave me here to worry myself into an early grave.”

Those words pulled a loud snarl out of the King, who swiped up his imp into his arms and cradled him close to his face. Fizzarolli curled up against him on reflex, relishing in all three heads nuzzling and pressing close to him, unwilling to leave him be. However, he was still anxious, due to the growling, the dichotomy between the angry sounds and clingy behavior.

“Don’t you fucking say that. Don’t… Don’t say it. Never say that to me ever again.” Ozzie was terrified of what would happen to him when his mortal demon died. Eighty, ninety years might seem like a long time to Olli, but to Ozzie, it was the blink of an eye. He didn’t want to think about it, and he didn’t want to think of the other dying today, “You’re not fucking dying on me.” Not yet.

Blinking in confusion for a moment, Olli pushed lightly at the other’s face, and his little heart broke when he saw tears in Asmodeus’ eyes. His lower lip wobbled, and a couple of tears broke free, sliding down his lilac fur, and Olli kissed him again. It was desperate, passionate, an attempt to fix the problem he’d gone and created. Anything for Ozzie. Seeing him so bereaved at the mere thought of him getting hurt had his entire plan melting away from his mind, and for a moment they just sobbed together. Dampening their cheeks, sticking Ozzie’s fur to Olli’s face, they held on tight to one another with Olli’s arms and legs securing them together tightly.

When the crying finally ended, Olli was choking on his own snot, and Ozzie was a fountain of mucus, tears, and saliva. Letting Olli blow his nose, Ozzie didn’t dislodge him from his arms, keeping him close to his chest. Tomorrow was going to be a nightmare if Olli wouldn’t drop it and went with him, he was going to be a Satan damned mess, but it didn’t matter. Apparently, this was a hill he was ready to die on (the thought nearly killed Ozzie on the spot), and Ozzie couldn’t fight his whims forever. It was so often that Olli got exactly what he wanted because Ozzie struggled with telling him ‘no’ for very long.

That night, they went to bed without more than Ozzie gorging himself on Fizzarolli’s cock in a way that told Olli he’d upset him. The seared wound of his ultimate rejection ripped open on its own like a chasm opened by an intense earthquake, and Ozzie struggled to focus on anything else, much less his book. Could he even keep himself from saying it at this point? Fizzarolli was still intent on going with him, on staying with him while he met with his parents, and he was terrified of it. They wouldn’t be happy, which didn’t bother him, except that they had a tendency to try and get rid of things they disliked. Ozzie knew that well.

When Fizzarolli began to stir against his chest, he took a deep breath. The words were on his tongue already, but he didn’t know what was going to come out due to the jumble of emotions in his chest. He’d been thinking about it while trying to focus on what he was reading, and it just wasn’t working. A soft smile worked onto his face, but it looked pained, and Olli yawned behind one of his hands, twisting his neck until he heard a few satisfying cracks.

“Somethin’ wro– Wrong, Babe?” Olli asked on another yawn, repeating himself after a second as he stretched his back out, lifting his ass into the air and shaking it a little. Maybe he was showing off, hoping that Ozzie would feel better if they replaced all those hard feelings with sex. That was usually how the elder coped with things, he did so much better if he could just get in a couple good fucks while talking about serious topics. Otherwise, he got flighty and uncomfortable, and it was just another thing that Olli found endearing about him.

“What’s up?” If Ozzie was this stiff and uncomfortable, then that meant it was Olli’s job to try and help him. Glancing over at the other’s crotch, he bit his lip, but Ozzie drew his face back to look at him with a light pinch to his chin.

“I…” The words tried to march out of his mouth, but every last one got caught in the dry, cracked desert that was his tongue and perished. For a moment he looked like he might vomit, and Fizzarolli rose to sit up on his hip, both hands buried in the other’s chest fluff, “I just… I…”

“Babe, it’s okay,” Fizzarolli began, extending one arm to pet his face gently, a soft, genuine smile on his face that set Ozzie’s heart to fluttering and plummeting into his feet simultaneously, “Whatever it is, just tell me. I won’t judge you.”

But you so will Ozzie thought dimly, sighing in a put upon away as he finally shifted a bit. Fizz could hear his pump adjusting and he glanced over at the enclosed vats at the side of the bed. Part of him wondered if he should go ahead and try to turn him on again, but he didn’t know if now was the time. Ozzie just looked so grim, and Fizz had never seen him like that before, even when he’d been upset in the past. There was something different about this, and he didn’t know what it was, but he was desperate to fix it.

“I… Need to tell you something important. And… When I say it… If… If you need to leave just do it quick.”

Leave? This had Fizzarolli sitting up fully, furrowing his brow as he regarded his lover. It might be too early for this kind of thing, but it was surprisingly sobering to see the other behaving like this.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Fizzarolli promised, his expression serious as he looked between each of Ozzie’s ashamed faces. That wasn’t right, Ozzie never accepted shame in his life, and whatever had him so fucked up was about to turn the pacifist into a warrior.

Stunned where he sat, Fizzarolli stared at him with wide pink eyes glowing dimly in the bedroom’s low light. Ozzie’s eyes shifted and none of his heads could look at Fizzarolli, his heart hammering in his chest making the silence feel deafening. Finally, Olli started to sit up, and instead of getting off of Ozzie, the imp let himself tumble into the other’s lap.

Still silent, Olli watched in slow motion as Ozzie lifted him and set him down on the silky teal pillow beside the one he always used. The blanket was removed from the Sin’s hips, and he turned off his pump with a sigh, then another one, and he flinched. Removing the toy and the sleeve from himself, he set them aside for cleaning and threw his legs over the side of the bed. Holding onto the mattress tight enough they both heard a distinct rip, he heaved another sigh, closing his eyes to fight the tears welling in them again. “Just… I’ll send your stuff wherever you want me to, it’s still all yours. We can find you an apartment, and you can still work at the club. …Or we can move you to a different one. Stooping to open the metal and glass top of the pump’s containment unit, he lifted out one full, heavy glass tank, then the other. Fizzarolli hesitated again, before biting his lip. Did Ozzie really mean that? All of it? He was kicking him out over this? All of his prosthetics shot out to wrap around one of Ozzie’s large upper arms and he lurched forward to cling to him, nuzzling his face into his fur.

“You want me to go ‘cause you’re in love with me?” Fizz finally asked, muffled by his face smooshed against him, closing his eye as he pressed his cheek into the other’s bicep after a second, “I don’t want to go. I’m just… Shocked, I guess. Didn’t think you could love something like me.”

All he could think of was every time someone had been thrown out for saying they loved Ozzie, and here he was, confessing to the feelings he so often claimed to hate. It almost hurt that Ozzie thought he was rejecting him because he’d never do that, it was so far from his mind he hadn’t even thought of it.

Olli calling himself something kept bothering Ozzie, though, and he finally reached over to pry Olli off of him and cradle him in his arms instead, pressing their foreheads together.

“You aren’t just some thing. I… I don’t think I could go on without you.” The admission actually surprised him and he blinked a couple of times, unsure of if he should have said it. He’d have to learn to move on eventually, but he couldn’t lose him, now, it was way too soon, “You’ve completed me for eleven years, now. It took some time but I…” Trailing off, he finally shook his head, rubbing their faces together, “That’s why I can’t take you with me today.”

“We already talked about this,” Olli growled, “I’m going with you because I love you, too. I don’t want you to go alone, I want to be there in case you need me to back you up.”

As if Fizzarolli could really do anything against angelic royalty.

“Do you really think you could help…?” Ozzie questioned, his heads tilting a little bit as he finally let Olli move to become his cuddly scarf. Taking his vats one by one to the bathroom and dumping them, he didn’t mind when Fizzarolli scooped his hands into one of them to steal some cum to drink. Honestly, they could both probably use some stress relief, and he considered their options absentmindedly.

“I can at least be a supportive scarf.” He explained, “I know you’re nervous, and if you think there’s going to be a fight…” Fizzarolli trailed off to take another pull from his cupped hands, relishing in the cum sliding down his throat, “I don’t want you to be injured with no one there to help you.” Even if blood made him intensely sick and dizzy, he could at least call for Brick.

It showed off his Adonis belt, and only had a simple, thick strip of leather that wasn't see-through in the front. Two belts kept the sheer material strapped to his thighs, while the back was entirely the shiny pleather. It vacuum-sealed to Ozzie's ass and dick just right, and even in his human disguise showed off just how toned he was.

Those ugly-ass shoes set off the outfit in a way that would be impossible for anyone else. Platforms with a chunky heel coated in sequins that could change colors by being rubbed were complete with a sneaker sole underneath the toes. It went from black to a sharp pink strip, then into yellow stripes to hold the laces in place. Shiny blue sparkles crawled from beneath the laces out to swirl around the front of the shoe to the back, dropping down to the dark purple heel. The thick fur on his arms, chest, and sideburns (there was no way that that was just hair) guided the eye to the goatee on Ozzie’s handsome face. His olive skin set off the dark brown hair that was nearly black, and his easy grins and flirtatious smiles charmed anyone that looked at him. Conversely, Fizzarolli was a thin little thing with long red hair pulled into low pigtails on either shoulder, braided carefully on their way up to Earth. While Ozzie was still a fairly tall man, he was closer to Fizzarolli’s size, able to wrap his arm around him for once.

“...There they are.” Ozzie sighed, gesturing to the boardwalk ahead of them.

Standing at the railing were two tall, olive-skinned people speaking quietly amongst themselves. They gestured out to the ocean and pointed things out to their other half, and Ozzie gulped softly at the sight of them. The woman had impossibly long, wavy white-blonde hair and a delicate face with high cheekbones. Ozzie’s father had sharp, chiseled features and broad shoulders like his son, standing with his hand around his wife’s waist. Their clothes were opulent, matching, and white with gold trim, and clearly something Ozzie would never be caught dead in.

Fizzarolli tried to imagine him in something draped over him like that, with a high collar and fancy, detailed stitching.

Upon finally approaching them, Ozzie took a deep breath through his mouth and let it out through his nose before clearing his throat; Ozzie struggled with and ultimately failed not to flinch when the couple turned around to regard them. His mother’s striking amethyst eyes had him looking down at her mouth, up at her forehead, anything but those eyes, and his father’s chartreuse eyes nearly bore holes through him. It wasn’t until their attention shifted to the imp at Ozzie’s side that Olli found his eyes on the ground, too.

Ozzie had every right to be worried about his parents. They were beautiful, sure, but Olli could feel the power dripping from their every pore, and as they gazed at him, he could tell he wasn’t welcome here.

“What is that?” His mother asked, lip drawn up in disgust as she gestured to Fizzarolli, taking a step back and smoothing her soft, shimmering gown over her stomach. For a second, Olli thought she was convinced he might give her a disease just by looking at her.

“Mother,” Ozzie growled, holding Olli closer, “This is Fizzarolli. He’s a full-time companion of mine.” Yeah, that wasn’t a lie, but it was at the same time, “Fizzarolli,” His parents didn’t get to hear his nicknames, “Abstemiounessa and Valore. Mother, Father, my…” Hesitating for a couple seconds, he finally spoke the word into being, cementing what he thought about his lover in a definitive tone, “Boyfriend.”

Valore’s expression fell flat for a moment as he looked over the couple, sniffing the air to catch the Alpha’s scent. Put off by it, he had to take a second before finally devolving into a deep, loud belly laugh. It even seemed to shock his wife, who looked at him like he was growing a second head and hadn’t noticed

“Very, very funny son,” The dark-haired man wiped a tear of mirth from his eye, “Be serious. It’s a servant, right?”

“It?” Ozzie’s expression was flat and he rose a brow, his eyes nearly glowing with the amount of unhappiness in it, “He is mine, and he’s not a servant.”

His scent tinted with displeasure, and Olli couldn’t help but purr at his side, rubbing his scent gland against the other’s shoulder in an attempt to appease his bad mood. The absentminded grooming had his mother stumbling back a little bit, her expression one of shock and dismay as she gripped the railing with a soft gag. Turning slightly, she pulled her hair back and over one shoulder in an attempt to keep it safe if she did vomit.

“You’re making your poor mother sick. You? Dating a… A pest like that?” The sneer on his father’s face made Ozzie’s eyes narrow and his words came out on a subvocal growl.

“Fuck off with that bullshit.” He hadn’t been in love for over two thousand years, but what he had with Fizzarolli had snuck up on him. If it had been a serpent, it would have bit him. Still, it didn’t end the low snarling that vibrated his chest, despite Olli’s best attempts at comforting him, “Did you want to talk to me, or did you want to see us for a few minutes and leave before I can give you your usual ‘no?’”

Abstemiounessa went stiff, narrowing her eyes as she took in the slim, potentially very breakable Alpha at her son’s side. Her eyes danced with a mischievous flame that Ozzie didn’t like, and he stepped in front of Olli until he was almost completely hidden behind him.

“Why would you ignore us, my son?” She asked, her voice lofty as she raised a delicate hand like she might touch his cheek. About a foot away from him, she shook her head, hair flowing in a beautiful cascade of white waves down her back, hand falling back to her side, “We just want what is best for you.”

“You’ve never cared before.” Their invested interest in forcing him to return to Heaven to grovel at the feet of the first being to ever break his heart was an entirely selfish one. When he wasn’t in their presence but thought of them, he thought that Levi would be proud of them, maybe Lucifer, too. Ozzie disliked selfishness in almost every situation, and his own parents disgusted him, “I’ve slept with more people than I could count on every hand in Hell. I don’t see why you think it’s so bad that I’ve started dating. I thought you preferred monogamy.”

Not that he was particularly monogamous, even still.

Every time he mentioned dating, or being Fizzarolli’s boyfriend, the imp thought he might pass out. It was so overwhelming, the amount of joy that he felt over just hearing this, and he couldn’t stop purring and gazing adoringly at his lover. It was going to make the Angelic Royalty puke, and Valore kept glancing at his wife like he was afraid she would faint.

“Dear,” Abstemiounessa began, her voice poisoned honey as she ran a dainty hand over her forehead, the other one wrapped around the railing behind her, “We love yo–”

“We’re leaving.” Ozzie wasn’t above dragging Olli to an alleyway and back home, because he was done before their guilt-tripping had even started. The angels stood there, watching their son leave with frustrated sighs and upset clucks.

“It’s going to be harder to convince him, now,” Valore stated, his eyes narrowing as he watched them disappear into a portal back to Hell.

“We’ll get him.” Abstemiounessa replied flippantly, tossing her hair over her shoulder as she started for a building behind the boardwalk, “It shouldn’t be too hard despite this… Unfortunate development. If he feels anything for the vermin attached to his hip, he’ll listen the next time we see him.”

Interested, her husband followed along behind her, entering the portal she opened in the back of a shop they often used for this sort of thing. Ozzie always chose to meet in the human world, as they couldn’t openly show who they were and it guaranteed more safety for him. At least, it usually did. The next time they met up, Valore and Abstemiounessa would be prepared, and Ozzie wouldn’t know what hit him.

AN: Ope, that one ended up so much longer than I thought it would. Buuuut I had a lot of fun with it, even if a lot of it made me cry. I love the premise of this, and I have a follow-up fic that will be coming… Eventually. I might look into it more after September is over, since I don’t have a lot of time outside of working on these right now.

And now a note about Vice. Ankh-Morpork has no Vice Squad, the Guild of Seamstresses having made it clear that they have enough already and don’t need any from the Watch. Watch policy is that this Guild is an honest and cooperative enterprise, better run on behalf of its membership than most Guilds, and officers will not therefore become involved except by invitation of evidence of serious crime.

Therefore, the day-to-day policing of the salons, houses of negotiable affection, hot bath lobs, piccolo lobs, parlours, spikies, molly houses and premises of extremely good repute that form the Shades’ most energetic trade is left to the Guild and their enforcers Dotsie and Sadie, locally known as the Agony Aunts. They may be considered as highly specialized constables, whose job is to protect Guild employees from the more enthusiastic customer, and are best left alone, especially Dotsie if you see her left eye start to spin.

Commander Vimes has informally let it be known that complaints against the Aunts will certainly be investigated, if the complainee is still capable of walking as far as the Watch House and of speech when he gets there, but said enquiry will start with a very thorough investigation of all the events leading up to it. The Guild has very wide definitions of ‘acceptable’ behavior and the Watch’s formal view is that anyone who oversteps these broad marks is on their own and probably highly suspicious.

(Also--Terry Pratchett: My big fantasy city runs on a Guild system that formalizes the kind of ‘thieves’ guilds’ you often see in fantasy books and takes the concept to its logical--and therefore somewhat silly--conclusion. But you know what? If I’m going to do that I also have to account for the fact that other people would have guilds. Hmm. Yes. I think this is right: good news everyone! The sex workers have a guild! Ha ha, very droll, right? *dead serious tone* It’s one of the best-run guilds in my city, whenever I write about it I will use a respectful tone, its president is highly influential, the leader of the city had a high-class sex worker for an aunt and so he has also drunk his respect sex worker juice, and by the way anyone who harms a lady of negotiable affection in my city is going to be punished by two old ladies and if the ‘victim’ of such an attack complains the cops are going to investigate him. By the way there is at least one club for gay men because gay people exist. Isn’t that nice?)

Hey i really love your blog!!! I just plucked the courage to actually send u an ask fhdjhd but GOSH i love your video edits and your gifs and your meta article posts, you're so articulate and you can explain/describe moments in a way that makes me go "oh wow, i cant believe i haven't seen it that way before!!" Haha ANYWAYS i'm just here to say that i completely agree with what all u said, Free creators might do a lil fanservice here and there for the 25 ships that exists within the fandom's circle, but rinharu's storyline is clearly the most romantic one! And i'd argue it's the one closest to being canon esp after part 1, i mean the fact that they put such an explosive emotional outburst right at the end of the second to the last movie means a lot. It's like reinforcing the fact that this series has always been about them, and everything that has happened only happened either because they met or they grew appart and miss eachother. I kinda feel like maybe.. juust maayyybe there's a chance KA wants to make the ship canon, since it's the last movie and they want to end it on a highnote maybe (bcs honestly i think the only reason they've been holding back is purely bcs of the merch sales, since they don't have a problem showing a wholesome lesbian love story in kobayashi maid dragon) butt i could be wrong, maybe i'm just overly optimistic and delusional, they could somehow ruin it and give an ending that panders to all the ships again 😅🥲, but at least there's a clear-cut guarantee that part 2 would dedicate a large portion of it fixing rin and haru's fight!!! Well, you know me, I only care for one ship, which is the only one with confirmed info that they're both actually gay and have mutual feelings for each other. There are some other ships in free! I'm fine with (those do not include Rin or Haru in them xD), but I just mostly don't care, bc after reading all the stuff, you can see that in some of those to one the other one is actually like his second option, which I just do not like. Others I just don't even see, bc again to me who witnessed great close male friendships and having two sisters who I'm very close to, I just do not see anything romantic in that.

It's not just Free! tbh, it's like any sports anime these days. They see two guys walking together, it's a ship. And like no one cares if they're just bros. Like I'd get i they did some fanservice fanservice, but like I never saw anyone in Free! crossing the line the way rinharu do. I can without thinking much name you 10 rh moments that no matter how hard you think can't be explain as being bros, but can't name one when it comes to others. I just find some ppl shipping everyone with everyone weird sometimes. It's like western fans see like some eastern actors or singers slap each other ass lovingly and they're like "oh they're fucking" I'm like "yeah, ofc all 500 of them, you're absolutely right". And Free! doesn't do anything even like that, I just do not get sometimes like what moment even brought on some ships. I'm genuinely confused. Albert and Haru? You fucking fell from a sakura tree or smth? I'm...

I'm especially confused when it comes to guys, whose character type is who I call "I only want this one and if I can't have it, then I'm ok" xD. It just always surprised me, when they try to pair up them with someone else, it's like a complete ooc.

I'm also not into this whole "well, if there are gays in this anime, than everyone there is gay". I'm like... huh. It's like with KNB and MDZS I had same feeling. It's like you have already couples there who are canon/borderline canon, why do you need another 10 who don't even interact or just don't even go there? I'm always so confused in those situations. Or like wangxian is married and some are like "no, I actually don't like it, let me write a fic when they're with other ppl". Lan Zhan... being in love or having sex with someone else? Yeah, that's not Lan Zhan, dude, you're writing about someone else. Might as well change the name at this point.

But last time I went to twitter someone had a thread about how if they make s4 of Free! they should mainly explore there Momo's angst (and no, it wasn't a joke), so I'm already like, I'm just.. nothing will surprise me no more. But I'm forever gonna be confused.

Yeah, I eel you about "going there". I mean seeing part of it, it just kinda cemented my confusion, bc I do not get how it can be considered platonic. We were just discussing since yesterday with @freeseafirefly how I now even more perplexed and do not understand how they will resolve it without going into relationship territory. It's just our point here is that like... no one forced them to go there (I mean its not like this whole fandom has some wild expectations or anything already), we were waiting or our usual friendship and swimming and maybe tiny conflict about struggles of pro-careers and some usual rh implications (maybe all the rh gay in dramas as always). Not some pure fanfiction coming to life here haha.

Like why I'm laughing is bc I twice used in my "fics" bringing up him leaving Haru as a force to push the confession, bc there's no way if he adresses this it won't lead to this. And now we not only have this (bc Haru just basically layed it out there), but an actual scene of him playing on their feelings for each other and a literal image of Rin leaving and "taking Haru's heart with him" to the point when he's for the first time in his life openly crying on the ground. And it's not like this scene can be interpreted as anything else, the whole fandom talks same, bc the whole fight was just about them, what Haru said was just about them, there's a literal boom of his heart getting out of his chest, before he falls and now he's heartless.

So our question is like... why go there?

It's like some say that they might still resolve it with "they're special to each other" and swimming, but still like we already knew that, there was no reason to go that far is what I'm saying. And to think that it was planned since forever giving the clues is like... ???

The whole spoon theme also throw me on the loop because like, lets be honest, it's wedding themed. And that part of the interview about part 2 there also made me go...?????? Because I mean, huh?

This is just all in all very interesting turn of events to say the least. I do not see the point of all of this if its not what I think it is, esp after seeing tweets like "even I see a rh wedding and I'm mh T_T". It's just all very unsubtle, that's why we're confused.

Like who knows, maybe we'll really by some magic turn of events get lucky and they really decided that since its the ending, it's okay to go for it. But I also don't wanna to hype myself much, I'm already really happy with it, just bc again, this scene already proves all of my points.

And yeah, I'm sure they'll pander to everyone, bc it's the end and etc and we have to handle everything on the good note and there's a whole line of ppl who's obsessed with us, esp with Haru xD, but like bromance pandering and romance pandering are different things, you know *wiggles eyebrows* and u know who always gets the second one.

Do we ever stop and just appreciate how every time Jensen shares one of his Dean headcanons with us it's the angstiest shit you ever heard but also leaves you sitting staring at your wall for days completely recontextualizing everything you thought you knew? Like somehow Dean becomes exponentially sadder and more complex every time Jensen Ross Ackles opens his goddamn mouth and I live for that shit.

I think I'm just fully realizing, as I’m half-rewatching the show via YouTube reaction videos...we really weren't supposed to love Dean. And we really were not the target audience, and by we I mean a much larger segment of folks than you may think. Eric Kripke (and also Robert Singer) didn't want a bunch of queer OR mentally ill folks OR women OR people of color OR abuse survivors. Hell, he didn't even really want an audience of macho manly men!

Eric Kripke was aiming for an audience of Eric Kripkes--the kind of whiny pseudo-intellectual nerdbro who finds men like s1 Dean threatening in real life, thinks being rejected romantically by a woman is comparable to real hardship, views any unfamiliar form of intimacy with some base level of suspicion, and expresses disgust at other men’s promiscuity not because he has more “respect” for women (and don’t get me started on the puritanism of equating sex with disrespect automatically), but because he resents that he can't do the same.

Eric Kripkes hate men like Dean and envy them in equal measure. Dean is aspirational, a power fantasy, but he’s not the character Kripke actually identifies with. That's s1 Sam: the soft-spoken, smart, nerdy, sensitive guy who is special and whose niceness is rewarded by women improbably throwing themselves at him.

Dean’s hook-ups in the early seasons are almost all girls he blatantly, openly hits on or pursues in a way that, according to Nice Guy(TM) logic, would be creepy if he didn’t look the way he does (it’s still creepy, to be clear, only Nice Guys(TM) ever think it’s not). Whereas Sam’s hook-ups during these seasons almost always initiate things first, despite being in situations where hooking up with the 7-foot rando who just rolled into town would realistically be the furthest thing from their minds.

Dean is the Nice Guy(TM)’s power fantasy of being able to “get away with” whatever he wants by virtue of being hot (and assuming all women are just completely shallow), whereas Sam is the Nice Guy(TM) self-insert that, in fiction, actually “wins” girls by being comparatively respectful.

That’s why Dean is written the way he is in the early seasons, where he rides this weird line between being downright irredeemably sleazy and accidentally actually deconstructing toxic masculinity in his characterization. Kripke wants to be Dean but also resents the very existence of Deans (that is, the surface-level Dean, the Masculine Performance) in the world, and resents his own inability to inhabit that role.

They confuse him, and they make him feel insecure, but instead of bucking that whole worldview he fully buys into it via the way he makes fun of it. So Dean becomes this weird hodgepodge of highly performative toxic masculine traits interspersed with moments of genuine emotion that were probably intended to read as weakness. And it’s supposed to be over-the-top and vaguely ridiculous and ultimately, kind of pathetic.

But then he made the inspired mistake of casting Jensen fucking Ackles, the man who’s forgotten more about gender performativity than most of us will ever fucking know, in this highly gendered, highly contradictory role.

When you hand Jackles contradictions he just turns them into character complexity, so suddenly instead of watching a show about Regular Guy being sucked into his toxic family’s heinous world of monsters, you’re watching a show about Manly Guy desperately trying to hold his family together against impossible odds through increasingly self-destructive means while his facade of masculinity systematically crumbles around him.

And it’s fucking fascinating, so fascinating that every subsequent writer leans further into that, until that’s almost the entirety of the show. Hell, even Kripke leans into it somewhat, maybe subconsciously, fairly early on. Watch the back half of season 1: it’s extremely Dean-perspective heavy where the first half of the season was more evenly split. Still, the perspective remains more or less balanced in seasons 2 and 3, only to slant extremely far towards Dean in season 4 and never really course-correct after that.

In retrospect it should’ve been obvious that Ruby was playing Sam from the get-go, because the show simply does not invest much time or effort into getting you invested in her relationship with Sam. Certainly not as much time and effort as it expends on making you feel Dean’s worry and distrust, or in building up his parallel relationship with Castiel. And boy, once that relationship takes off, there’s really no more hope of this ever being the Sam show again.

The most it can hope for is to evenly split focus between the two brothers, although most of the time it doesn’t even manage that. By the time we get halfway through the show, it’s pretty solidly the story of Manly Guy having a constant gender and sexuality crisis trying to keep his increasingly queer found family together from within the confines of his glass closet, while the angel who pulled him out of Hell chips steadily away at the closet’s walls.

There are hardly any women in the story at that point that aren’t written as sisters or mothers to the main characters. There are precious few hook-ups for either brother anymore, either, pursuing and pursued alike. There’s no power fantasy to speak of, and no low-key competition between the brothers related to any of these things.

Instead you have Manly Guy embracing his homemaking skills while forming affectionate homosocial bonds with men who are more secure in their masculinity than he is, which he finds both freeing and comforting. And you have Regular Guy setting boundaries, going vegan, and bonding with the women in his life over surviving similar kinds of trauma.

They co-parent a child with their gay angel best friend who likes pop music and is Manly Guy’s most profound significant homosocial bond. Oh yeah, and they also hunt monsters and save the world sometimes, but mostly those plots exist as allegories for the things they’re working through, or catalysts for their continued character development.

Like no fucking wonder Kripke (and later, Singer) didn’t get the audience he was after. And also thank fucking god he didn’t.

One of the frustrating things about Supernatural being filmed in and around Vancouver instead of on actual U.S. backroads is the lack of batshit religious signage that's a key feature around the Bible Belt and in especially rural parts of the Midwest, and would have taken on a deliciously ominous tone in seasons 4-5, season 11, and season 15 in particular.

Like where are the Jesus Lives signs painted in what might well be dried blood on rotting wooden planks nailed to random trees along the state highway? Where are the falling down barns no one has bothered to repair, but someone sure put in the effort to paint GOD IS ALWAYS WATCHING on the side facing the road? Where are the gigantic white crosses looming over the interstate like pale angels poised to rain God's wrath upon us? Where are the wackadoo church bulletins trying to sound cheeky and relevant?

Truckstop America's aesthetic is steel, concrete, and the smell of gasoline, true. But throughout a good third or more of the country it's ALSO batshit religious signage and I think it's pretty indicative of how they failed to go hard enough with their own premise that in fifteen seasons we never see any.

What Kyuso is, and what it isn’t

A few thoughts about Kyuso wa cheese no yume o miru upcoming movie release

Warning 1: spoilers ahead!

Warning 2: I wrote this post quite long ago but the movie was delayed due to the spread of the pandemic, and so I chose to postpone my thoughts as well. So if you find that some thoughts might sound a bit "old", that is the reason why.

I can remember there was at first a lot of criticization towards Ohkura's upcoming Otomo role in the Kyuuso wa Cheese no yume o miru movie, which honestly I cannot fully understand.

While I can understand not everyone might be comfortable "enjoying" a story starting out of repeatedly cheats towards women and a blackmail, it sure does not just sit back on this alone (quite the contrary), and I think that both character and story-wise it can be an amazing opportunity for Ohkura's career.

Same for the Boys' Love theme: live action adaptations of BL stories have so far generally lacked too much and definitely failed to adequately portray the BL theme itself, due to poor budget, poor staff, poor attention and poor everything. A brilliant exception is the Double Mints movie: a very dark, violent and angsty story (beware if you're not incline to these themes) and yet a very touching and heart-wrenching movie, where the BL relationship is as much sad as realistic.

Back to the Kyuso movie.

Ohkura's Otomo character in the Kyuso no cheese BL movie isn't just a "bisex" one, and isn't just a "gay" one either. The original manga is actually no real BL because it was not published in a Boys' Love magazine, it had been written in a josei magazine whose target is the adult female audience. That is to say the story does not aim to be a queer manifesto, even though I think it deals amazingly great with such themes. What's (I reckon) great about Mizushiro sensei's story isn't the yaoi theme itself (alone), but rather the excellent way she portrays the human weaknesses and dark sides of her characters (male and female ones), which is not to say I "cheer" for the characters, because I don't, but introspection-development-wise, the story is gorgeous.

Even after the re-prints of the volumes, which have partially edited illustration (not a big thing, only the genital depiction has been censored), the illustrations, dialogues and themes keep being the original ones.

As I said above, the several twists this story carries are also why I reckon this role might be a huge and challenging opportunity for Ohkura's career as an actor, together with his "controversial" Kumon Onna and recent Montecristo ones, and why I won't go easy with 'judging' the movie as proper adaptation of the manga, should it turn out to be disappointing on screen. - Spoilers ahead, you're warned -

While living is life as a "regular het" guy, Otomo is married and repeatedly cheats on his wife. Should he be praised for leading this life? I guess no, definitely not. So, we start out from a mean man doing despicable actions who suddenly gets "blackmailed" for his bad behaviour by a homosexual kohai of his.

Is Imagase the only bad guy here, for daring such blackmail? I guess not.

And yet, despite (or thanks to) these premises, the story evolves into something very, very different.

It takes a gay kohai of his to make Otomo realize that his marriage is just an empty shell, that he basically married out of any deep feelings for his wife and was 'happy' with just 'life going on'. It's the meeting with Imagase that forces him to think deeply about his life, to realize he's never cared for other people's feelings to start with. In short, Otomo is a womanizer, a selfish and rather empty guy. The sexual relationship with Imagase reveals him also as being jealous and passive, masochistic and dominant at the same time, very much incline to temptation, whatever its shape or time. He's not to be praised, not a little bit. He's not to be looked down at, at the same time. Because he's human, because that is how life takes his toll on everyone of us (nothing is black or white, rather being endless shades of gray), and because it's only when Otomo realizes who he is and what he wants -thanks to Imagase- that he finally manages to be more "himself". "I'll turn 30 soon. I might still have to know what true love is." -Kyoichi Otomo-

These 'simple' words are one of the keys of the whole story to me: I was aghast when I read it in the manga, I still remember them 10 years later, and I was so relieved to notice it was kept in the trailer, at least. Which is to say I'm not the only one thinking they're valuable.

Otomo has met and has been with a lot of women, but none of them is able to rip a hole inside his soul. And then, yes, it's Imagase who "makes the miracle", he's the only one who intercepts the black hole and bluntly tells him so. Because sometimes this can happen through the most unexpected of encounters. It's Imagase who makes Otomo finally realize how important it is to pursue a relationship where both parts openly discuss, argue and talk constantly about each other... in bed or not. It's Imagase, a cheeky, blunt, capricious, selfish, impetuous, fickle and mean guy. It's not a woman, nor a good boy. But it's him who is there for Otomo when the latter needs it (and even when he does not). This is what makes this story not just good but special, to me: a cynical analysis about love relationships and human growth/twists, but at the same time a very humble and realistic one.

Personally speaking, I don't "like" Otomo nor Imagase nor their petty behaviours, and yet I cannot wait to see how Ohkura and Narita will portray them in every little bit of these flawed characters, because I have been hooked to the story as a whole since the very beginning (ten years ago) and I still am this bewitched, and probably forever will be (yes I know, Ohkura: there is no thing like forever anymore. But bear with my feels, please). I would lie if I were to say I don't care about the sex scenes because, hey, it's a very sexy story after all, but that is not where the real point is, to me. The point is that thanks to this movie adaptation, Ohkura has been given a great (maybe not the greatest itself, but greatest so far) opportunity and I'm cheering on him eternally for this.

I had honestly never thought that one day this story could actually become a movie, and even if I did, last thing I would imagine would be that Ohkura could be starring in it.

But it happened. Not to mention Ohkura himself seems to have become fairly fond of this story... thinking deeply about his character, the staff involved, the story and its themes, just like he did during Dr. DMAT, Hanachan no Mizoshiru and Montecristo filming time. Should the movie even fail to hit my (absurdly high) expectations, I won't love the manga less. So far, the theatrical trailer looks a bit different from the sophisticated 'air' I thought it would have, but still quite nice: way more tender and cute than I thought, but with a palpable longing atmosphere which I find very much on point. We'll see. Cannot wait. In the meantime, ganbatte Ohkura, I'm proud <3

** Post Scriptum: Besides, I find it very nice that Kyuso movie will be distributed by Phantom Films, which so far handled a lot of quite interesting movies. Among these I definitely recommend: - Call Boy (with Tori Matsuzaka), story of a host/gigolò in Tokyo. Photography is amazing in this movie and so are all the actors. - Hoshigaoka Wonderland (Suda Masaki has a very small part in it, but he's amazing);

- HIS: latest release, story of a gay couple that split up during University and meets again several years later... when one of the guys has become father of a young girl. The movie is a sequel of a coming of age drama aired in 2019 in Japan.

- (not by Phantom Films but anyway) Double Mints: the BEST "yaoi" movie I have ever seen, so fa. A dark story filled with angst, violence, abuse and still, the touching story of a bond&love that cannot be torn off. Definitely not an easy movie, but definitely recommended if you're interested watching how a movie should be done and how "gay feels" are definitely not in the way nor "like a shojo manga".

Introduction

Representation of queer people has gotten better in the last few years, in both quantitative and qualitative ways. Yet, there is often still a discrepancy between the representation of queer women and the experiences actual queer women. It still happens that queer women are overly sexualised, lack depth or that they are marketed towards men as fanservice through the usage of the male gaze (Smith, 2018). The main reason for all of this is that queer women in mainstream media are often created by men.

According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary (n.d.), queer is defined as “of, relating to, or being a person whose sexual orientation is not heterosexual and/or whose gender identity is not cisgender”, but in this paper, we will only focus on portrayal of female sexuality of queer women. For this paper, I will look at the agency of queer female characters in the television show Glee. With agency I am referring to the subject being able to act in a certain narrative (McAdams & McLean, 2013). I will try to figure out how the audience reacts towards the portrayal of queer women in Glee.

There are two reasons why I chose the television show Glee. First, despite its many flaws, it is my favourite show. Second, Glee has always been a frontrunner when it comes with queer representation. Glee has a total of 23 canon queer characters (Glee Wiki, n.d.). Three of them are women in the main cast: Santana Lopez (lesbian), Brittany Pierce (bisexual) and Unique Adams (transgender). As stated above, we’re only looking at the sexuality aspect, so Unique will be left out of the analysis. Through a close reading of the series’ portrayal of its characters, I ask this question: “How does Glee allow an enjoyable queer viewing experience?”

Theoretical background

The representation of sexuality has become more prominent in television in the last few years (Kidd, 2014; GLAAD 2005/2020), but it is still portrayed in a heteronormative way to show that heterosexuality is the norm (Avila-Saavedra, 2009). Since women are also still underrepresented and often badly represented, it is interesting to look at queer women in general (DeCeuninck & Dhoest, 2016).

Queer women are often represented in function of male fantasies and they are often sexualized and can normally be described as conventionally attractive (DeCeuninck & Dhoest, 2016). This is due to the male gaze. Mulvey (1989) describes the male gaze as an act of depicting women and the world heterosexual view that presents and represents women as sexual objects for the pleasure of the male viewer. Mulvey writes that the women displayed have two roles: one as an erotic object within the story and one as an erotic object for the audience. There’s a third component that places women as an erotic object for the men behind the camera.

But Mulvey writes from a heterosexual perspective and that does not always capture the experiences of queer viewers (Gokcem, 2012). It is argued that the “gay gaze” (man to man or woman to woman) is more about understanding that there’s a homosexual act on screen and acknowledging that act (Snider, 2008; Gokcem, 2012). It’s less about the sex appeal or objectification of the characters. Evans & Gamman (1995) even claim that there’s no such thing as a “lesbian gaze” when it comes to good lesbian representation, but that it’s more about lesbian imagery that is created by lesbian filmmakers for lesbian consumption. To them, subcultural codes are the reason that even objectifying imagery of women is still different than the ones in the male gaze.

Subcultural styles can be seen as coded transposed into the specific context of youth (Murdock & McCron, 1976). Murdock & McCron speak about class differences, but this view of subculture can also be applied to the queer community. Huq (2006) says that the term subculture carries implications of the oppositional and unofficial. Both writings speak about youth, and not all queer people are young, but when it comes to media, youth can find solace in specific subcultural media.

Within media, agency is important. Agency can be defined as the capacity of individuals to act independently and to make their own free choices (Barker, 2012). In narrative theory, this means the degree in which a protagonist is able to affect change in their own lives or influence others in their environment (McAdams & McLean, 2013).

Glee’s background

When it comes to the quantity of representation, Glee has always been a frontrunner (Marwick, Gray, & Ananny, 2014). It has shown a wide variety of serious topics in the show. Glee has characters of different ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities and economic classes. Glee also has characters in a wheelchair, it has characters with down syndrome, and it has characters with mental health problems.

Unfortunately, the quality aspect of representation in Glee is less than ideal. There is racism, sexism, transphobia, homophobia, and a strive to be well-abled and neurotypical. I am not talking about what happens within the show (as in, characters facing hatred from other characters), but by the way the show is written by its creators. Artie, the character in a wheelchair, constantly wishes that he could walk and he’s seen dancing in several dream sequences[1]. Queer characters could only kiss in “special episodes”, while their straight friends could make out anytime and everywhere[2]. A male character speaking out for himself is portrayed as heroic, strong and inspirational, while a female character speaking out for herself is portrayed as annoying, complaining and bossy[3]. Glee also portrayed heteronormativity by presenting its queer characters mostly as suffering while aspiring to fit in a heteronormative worldview, but also as happy and self-confident (Dhaenens, 2013).

An explanation for these underlying microaggressions can be ascribed to the fact that most people on the creative team of Glee were straight white men and when a woman did write a script, produce or direct, they were always working together with straight white men. Same goes for people of colour working in the Glee crew. They also had less episodes to work on (IMDb, n.d.). As a result, Glee often reflects a male heteronormative worldview.

Methodology

For this paper, I will take a closer look at Glee and its queer female characters. I will describe the three queer female characters and I will give some background. While describing the stories, I will look at how much the characters were allowed to exist with agency. Apart from that, I will also talk about certain fan reception towards storylines about the sexuality of these women and how they were allowed to express their sexualities.

I do have to point out that a lot of discussion is from archival material, since these storylines all happened in 2012 and 2013. I have spent time tracking down old blog posts and articles written by fans, but many have been lost due to domain changes or due to the deactivation/changes of blogs. I am aware that it is a huge methodological fault to purely rely on my memories, but Glee has ended years ago and people who once actively participated in discussions surrounding these characters have moved on. The posts that I have found were either difficult to find or they’re recent and written after the show. Not all posts are in-depth analyses. Sometimes they’re memes, but they still express the opinions of fans.

Analysis of Glee

I will split this section in 3 parts. Each part is about a certain character.

Santana Lopez

Santana Lopez got introduced in season 1 episode 1 “Pilot” as a background character. During the first season, she was portrayed as a girl who had sex with every guy in school and she actively sought out this sexual attention. In season 2, things started to change for Santana when it comes to her sexuality. In season 2 episode 4 “Duets”, Brittany and Santana are seen making out for the first time. At first, it wasn’t supposed to be a real storyline, but Naya Rivera, who played Santana, advocated for this relationship to become real and not a throw-away thing (NayaMitchell, 2011).

This changed Santana’s character from a heterosexual man-hunter to a deeply closeted lesbian. Her relationships with men became a way for her to hide her sexuality and Santana had to deal with a lot of internalised homophobia. This followed her all throughout season 2. This change was seen as abrupt by certain people and as a result, some people felt like they couldn’t get emotionally invested in the relationship. Others were happy to see female sexuality become a topic, since beforehand, Glee mostly focused on male sexuality (Marwick, Gray, & Ananny, 2014).

Season 3 showed Santana’s sexuality developing. In season 3 episode 4 “Pot O’ Gold”, Brittany and Santana decided to date, but Santana wanted to hide the relationship. Unfortunately for her, she got outed by Finn Hudson in season 3 episode 6 “Mash-Off”. The episode afterwards, “I Kissed A Girl”, dealt with the repercussions of the outing, but this episode was heavily scrutinised by fans and critics and even after the show ended, fans discussed how badly it was done (see Appendix for screenshots).

The episode tried to make Finn look like a hero by outing her and Santana even thanked him for it. Santana also sung the Katy Perry song I Kissed A Girl, which is a song that treats women kissing other women as a joke and a party activity for drunk straight women. Santana sung that song with a straight character named Rachel Berry, who appropriately sings the lyrics “I hope my boyfriend won’t mind it!”. Brittany barely spoke in this episode and Santana’s coming out to her parents got brushed off easily as something irrelevant that happened off-screen. A scene of Santana standing up for herself towards the other cheerleaders got cut and was only released after the end of the season (MrRPMurphyExclusive, 2012). Overall, Santana became a background character in her own coming out story, so that the narrative could focus on the straight boy who outed her (lesbianstana, 2018).

There is only one scene in the entire episode that focused on Santana, which is the heart wrenching scene where she comes out to her Abuelita. This scene is the only one where Santana gets to express her emotions to what has happened to her and this part is often regarded by fans as the only good part of the episode. There is a big reason why this scene stands out: it is written by a queer woman named Ali Adler, whereas the rest of the episode was written by a man named Michael Hodgson. Ali has written more media about queer women and she puts the narrative on them and their story. This scene focuses on Santana expressing and overcoming her struggles and not on Finn being the hero.

After this episode, Santana completely embraced her identity. For the remainder of the show, Santana was open about being a lesbian and she had relations with four other women and she ends up with Brittany. Santana’s confidence has helped a lot of young women feel comfortable with themselves, since it showed them that there is nothing wrong with liking other women. Her relationship with Brittany gave people hope (Marwick, Gray, & Ananny, 2014). This is especially true for women of colour, since not only did Glee show a confident lesbian, but also a confident lesbian of colour. Naya Rivera was aware of how Santana’s journey has impacted people and she said that she’s very proud of it (NayaMitchell, 2011).

Brittany S. Pierce

Brittany got introduced in season 1 episode 2 “Showmance” as a background character. She is also the dumb blonde with a lot of funny one-liners. Brittany is bisexual, but as a viewer, you never see or hear anything about her discovering her sexuality and coming out. She is the only of the 4 main queer character who does not have a storyline about sexuality and the struggles of coming out. Just like Santana, Brittany’s portrayed was very sexual in season 1, but she also mentions attraction towards women easily. This can be interpreted as a portrayal of a woman who’s very accepting of her own bisexuality, but it can also be interpreted as a thrown-away joke. It looks like Brittany’s comments about women are there to spark laughter.

In season 2, her attractions towards Artie, a boy, and Santana, a girl, becomes more fleshed out. In season 2 episode 18 “Born This Way”, she says that she thinks that she might be “bi-curious”. The word “bisexual” was barely used in the show and when it did, it was done in a very negative way[4]. Brittany referred to herself as “bi-curious” “a bicorn” (instead of a unicorn) and “bilingual” (not knowing what it actually meant)[5]. There is never a big revelation. The other characters in the show just know at one point that Brittany is bisexual.

After Brittany and Santana break up in season 4 episode 4 “The Break-Up”, Brittany falls in love with a boy named Sam. This relationship was not very well-received by Brittana (Brittany and Santana) fans and it felt like they were made fun of in season 4 episode 9 “Swan Song”, when Brittany talks to Sam that she does not want to date him to prevent a group of angry lesbian bloggers to hate Sam and turn violent. This felt very invalidating towards the feelings of queer women who found strength in the Brittana relationship (see Appendix for screenshots).

This relationship led to some debate within the fan community about Glee’s representation of bisexuality. Another problem of the Bram (Brittany and Sam) vs. Brittana debate was the fact that Brittany was suddenly allowed to express her attraction towards Sam way more than to Santana. The Glee Equality Project (2012) made a chart of how Brittany was allowed to kiss boys within the first episode of dating them, or even before dating them, but Brittany and Santana only kissed after 9 episodes of dating and after a fan campaign advocated for a kiss. Glee showed a big double standard in Brittany’s bisexuality and this led to anger (see Appendix for screenshots).

As written above, Brittany and Santana end up together in the end. Even though Brittany was not seen struggling, it was meaningful to have a happy ending for her. Heather Morris, who played Brittany, talked about the impact after the show’s end and how the Brittana relationship eventually helped people (FlyingHippopotamiSpy, 2015). Just like with Santana, watching Brittany be confident and comfortable helped young women realise that there’s nothing wrong with liking girls, or liking girls and boys. Brittany’s happiness showed that her sexuality did not prevent her from having a happy ending, which impacted viewers.

Bonus: Quinn Fabray

Quinn Fabray was introduced in season 1 episode 1 “Pilot” as a main character. Quinn is straight. Fans disagreed. Many people noticed that there was chemistry between Quinn and Rachel and people started liking them as a couple. Faberry (Quinn and Rachel) was one of the most popular couples in the show even though the characters were straight in the text of the show. That is due to the fan reception and fan work surrounding Faberry. As of July 2020, Faberry is still the 3rd most popular couple on the fansite AO3 (Shipping, n.d.). Fans often advocated for the characters to at least not be straight and Dianna Agron famously said: “Quinn could always go gay” (breakmelove, 2011).

During the show, there were little scenes[6] and pieces of dialogue[7] that indicated to Quinn not being straight, so that is why people latched more onto Quinn and not onto Rachel. That is why I’m only writing about Quinn in this paper. People believed that Quinn was heavily queer-coded. Queer-coding is “to be implicated as having or displaying stereotypes and behaviours that are associated (even if inaccurate) with homosexuality or queerness” (Kim, 2007, p. 157). It is often seen in a negative light, but more recently, queer-coding is also used to find positive subcultural codes in a text. That is what happened with Quinn.

In season 4 episode 14 “I Do”, Quinn gets drunk with Santana and the two of them have sex. When this got announced, fans were interested, since it seemed like they were finally going to acknowledge fans’ interpretation of Quinn. Yet, in the episode, it became clear that Quinn sleeping with Santana wasn’t out of attraction towards women, but more for experimentation. This led to disappointment and it also happens a lot that relationships between women are portrayed as not serious. This “heteroflexible” depiction makes women loving other women seem ‘bad’ and ‘guilty’ and ‘naughty’, basically like it’s a sneaky party trick to put more focus on the hot lesbian outcome (Jackson, & Gilbertson, 2009).

People also felt betrayed by the show. They felt like they’d been queerbaited, since the support for Quinn not being straight was already very apparent by this time. Queerbaiting is “a tactic whereby media producers suggest homoerotic subtext between characters in popular television that is never intended to be actualised on screen” (Brennan, 2018, p. 189). This has a negative connotation, since it feels like people are being lured in by false promises. Despite the negativity, there was also some positive news from women who liked to see it and found it enticing (Hogan, 2013) and still saw it as a sign that Quinn is not straight, despite her saying that this was just a one-time experiment. To this day, people still don’t believe that Quinn is straight (see Appendix for screenshots).

Discussion and conclusion

To answer the question “How does Glee allow an enjoyable queer viewing experience?”, I looked at the show and fan reception. The answer is that Glee allowed an enjoyable queer viewing experience when the characters had agency and happiness. The happiness led to a feeling of acceptance and belongingness for the viewers.

The stories surrounding the queer women in Glee have ups and downs. The flaws in the representation can be attributed to the fact that queer women weren’t a prominent part of the Glee crew. Yet, both Brittany and Santana have a happy ending: they’re alive, in love, and married. Fans seemed to enjoy the storylines when the characters have agency. When that agency gets removed (Santana’s outing not being about her, Brittany not being able to express her bisexuality without double standards), the storylines are not as well-received, since fans want to see the characters succeeding within the context and narrative of the show. Fans actively root for their happiness.

An interesting finding is that not many fans reacted towards the fact that Brittana consists of two hot femme cheerleaders. This wasn’t expected, since a lot of writing on bad representation revolves around the focus on the male gaze. This unexpected finding can be due to the fact that the relationship was treated fairly and not as a joke. Brittana did start out as two hot girls making out for fun, but it grew into a developed relationship. Another explanation might be in the faulty methodology: maybe I just never saw existing criticism and I didn’t have the time to ask people about it.

The representation of these characters have helped people and they also found a community, so the idea that subcultural media is correct. After all, fan’s interpretation of Quinn can show that subcultural codes are seen in media. Finding those codes also impact queer viewing of Glee. Even though it wasn’t always perfect, the characters have had a positive impact on representation for queer women. Especially for young people, Brittany and Santana were some of the first representation of teen female characters on mainstream television.

Afterword: in memory of Naya Rivera

This is not part of the paper, so you do not have to grade this and I don’t see it as part of the word count. This is just information that I think is important to share. Naya Rivera, the actress who played Santana, died on July 8th 2020 in Lake Piru in California. She was 33 years old. She drowned while saving her son’s life and her body was found on July 13th 2020. I am very sad about this news and I found it kind of hard to write this paper afterwards. I don’t believe in the afterlife or the whole “this person is looking down on you” stuff, but this was written in her memory and I hope I made her proud with this paper about her influence.

Even though it has been five years since Glee ended, many fans are very shocked and upset by this news. People, including celebrities who grew up with Glee, have shared stories of how much Santana meant to them and how Naya’s portrayal made them feel okay with themselves. Loads of (former) fans have expressed how much Santana’s portrayal has helped them with acceptance. Santana was not a perfect character, but she was a milestone for representation. Naya was not a perfect person, but she will forever be remembered for how much her sheer determination to handle Santana’s storyline respectfully has helped young women everywhere.

Summary: Let the day be known when fire tested gold in the most intimate sense. The forging of a mating bond between the dragon-demon hybrid and celestial maiden while further strengthening the relationship they already have. Natsu finally confesses his romantic feelings for Lucy at and asks to claim her as his mate and queen; though not without it taking a bit for it to fully sink in for the poor, baffled woman. The first chapter is one of my entries for @nalulovefestofficial 2019 and part of my ongoing Nalu (The Demon-Dragon and His Celestial Princess) anthology series set not too long after the events of the original manga/anime.(Slight Au).

A/N: Hey peeps, I'm back! You miss me lol? Anyway, this time I'm coming at you with the first chapter of my one new Nalu fics, (Fire And Gold) which is also an entry for Nalu Love Fest 2019. ( @nalulovefestofficial). Fun Fact: This fic along with Tantric Flames and other upcoming Nalu WIPS are now part of my ongoing The Demon-Dragon and His Celestial Princess (TDDACP) anthology series (slight au) with Fire and Gold set before the rest- a prequel of sorts. Course, this entire series is a slight au on account of it being set not too long after the events of the original Fairytail manga/anime and other reasons as you may all know. Please see the summary, A/N at the end of this chapter or Tantric Flames for more info. Anyways, I don't have too much else to say here. A special shoutout to the fantastic @bmarvels, ( @bmarvels) @doginshoe ( @doginshoe) and @goddesofimortality ( @goddesofimortality) (tumblr) for taking the time to help me proofread, edit, and further develop this chapter—thanks guys! Oh and an extra kudos to, Brit ( @bmarvels) who provided great suggestions for the title of this fic, chapter title and literary quote (which include all of those that you see here. "Oh hey, Natsu. Sorry— couldn't quite hear you over all the commotion. Can you repeat that please?"

Lucy turned to face her coral-haired best friend whose onyx eyes met her gaze; with what only could be described as genuine earnest; Most often seen when a critical weighed heavy on his mind—- aka a stark contrast to her cordial interest. She wasn't fibbing in her request for Nastu to reiterate his previous statement either — what with the whole guild being abuzz from the usual activity and all. Anyone who cared to listen in would most likely hear the various conservations between other guild members: Warren bemoaning to Max about his "complete and utter lack of a non-existent sex life— the hell man? I'm a freakin' dreamboat!"

Said sandmage's less -than - complimentary - quip of "if you're calling yourself a 'dreamboat', then no wonder none of the ladies aren't exactly jumping at the chance for a hookup. Hell, pretty sure I'd much rather be forced to look at picture of Ichyia in-assless-chaps-riding -a- gay unicorn than knock boots with you regardless of whether I was female or into dudes. "

"Fuck you man!"

"What does a chump like you know about getting laid anyway? "

"Lot more than you think, ya' piece of—- yeowwww! The hell dipshit?! Did you just ram a broom-handle up my ass?!"

"Yeah? So what if I did? What exactly are you gonna do about it?"

Elfman's crow from the sidelines about how "settling your differences with fists is so freakin' manly!" Macao and Wakaba squabbling over who "the rightful owner" of a much-coveted, lottery ticket was— typical chatter, really.

Not that any of this matters at the moment when Natsu’s trying to talk to me.

Nastu on the other hand, didn't pay the background noise any heed; who instead letting his eyes stay trained on Lucy.

"I really do wanna hear what you have to say. What were you trying to tell me?"

"Okay," he let out a measured breath, as if steeling his nerves, "Just wanted to say that I love you."

"Aw Natsu—I love you too! " the celestial mage gushed, touched by the dragonslayer's sentiment even it was a little out of the blue. " it's kinda out of the blue that you're telling me this— but I appreciate it just the same. There's no one better I could have as one my best —".

"No Luce," Natsu cut his blonde partner off with a slight shake of his head—- extremely perplexing to say the least. "That isn't what I meant."

"Okay... what did you mean? Lucy questioned, the intensity of the fire wizard's gaze sending her pulse racing."

"Something else" came his sober reply . "Not to say that you're not one of my best friends or that I don't consider myself extremely lucky to have ya' in my life— but my feelings aren't exactly the platonic kind. Hasn't been for a while. Guess what I'm trying to say is I'm in love with you."

Natsu's last words really threw the key- holder for a loop.

"W-wait? What?" was all she could utter in response with an owlish blink.

What he's saying? I mean, yeah, I'm totally head-over-heels in love with the dude— but he can't possibly feel the same way, right?

"I don't understand..."

"Still not sinking in yet, huh? Fine— I don't have a problem with repeating what I said if that helps."

"You don't?"

"No. I…"Natsu began to reiterate, enunciating each and every word with deliberate precision. "Nastu Dragneel, am in love with you Lucy Heartifila— as in head over heels."

"No, no, no, you can't be!" Lucy was still in vehement self-denial; or should she says her, poor addled-brain was short circuiting from trying to process her teammate's words. Not to mention how mortifying the heated-infused blood she could feel rising in her cheeks was. "You're my best friend and I'm not exactly the only single woman here. Far prettier girls here if you ask me—pick of the lot. No, you can't be in love with me—- just no way."

"Oh for the love—"

The celestial mage swore she caught a glimpse of slanted brows above scorching emerald fire in Salamander's eyes before his mouth was smashing down on hers in a searing kiss ; Needless to say, said female was caught completely off guard. Still, smooth lips were moving against hers with such insistent urgency that the mage couldn't help but automatically respond in with just spirited vigor; even during a rowdy chorus of catcalls, whistles and cheers heard from onlookers that she vaguely registered.

Natsu's hand meanwhile was instinctively pressing on the small of Lucy's back; while the other arm snaked around her waist to pull her flusher against him. Just as hers circled together around the nape of his neck at the same time. The next thing the celestial mage knew he was further deepening the kiss by running his tongue along the seam of her bottom lip; that was then being sucked into his mouth. Not only was the tactic tantalizing enough to light sparks of in Lucy's blood, but it also drew an airy moan out of her; which was more than well received by Natsu who growled in approval against her lips sending a tingly shiver down her spine.

My God is he a stellar kisser! Was all the only thought that crossed the summoner 's mind could; before all else was scattered by the insatiable fire wizard's velvet tongue slipping past her lips. The sensation of his tongue massaging hers though before sweeping/dragging along the roof of her mouth; Oh and a heady suck on Lucy's own for good measure—- all of that was what the stars were behind the mage's shut eyes were bursting from. Not to mention the rush of liquid heat between her legs.

More, more, more, Lucy craved more—- drowning in the ecstasy of it all, courtesy of Natsu. The fire-breather's defined leg wedging between the gaps her thighs, her fingers through his hair with a snug grip. Supple, masculine, hands all over creamy skin before skating down to—

"A-hem..."

The distinct noise of awkward throat clearing along with dry coughs of "a freakin' room you two— get one" from one nauseated-sounding Gray burst the pair's intimate little bubble. The blonde-haired member of the two meanwhile, just barely managed to bite back a noise of protest when the other pulled back ever so slightly.

"Huh—- looks like we got a little carried away just now" Nastu panted with a chuckle, though there didn't seem any hint of sheepish repentance in his voice at all — quite the opposite actually. More like he was extremely pleased with the turnout of events, if the smug grin spreading across his lips was anything to go by.

"Yeah—I'll say," came Lucy's reply, voice coming out a little ragged. Mavis knows that the euphoric high of the kiss was still singing in her veins. Not to mention the Natsu's forehead touching against hers; along with onyx-green piercing thrift honey-brown that the zodiac wielder swore she could get lost in too— profoundly intimate beyond words.

It's like he can see straight into my soul.

"Definitely attracted an audience."

"An audience, she says?" Cana's voice broke in from somewhere on the sidelines; which was practically dripping with dry sarcasm. "Gee—I wonder why."

"Yeah, me thinks our dear friend Lu stated the obvious" came Levy's wry quip." She did."

"Those two did get pretty hot and heavy," Lexus put in as a thoughtful observation. "Gotta hand it to Natsu though— dude has major kissing game."

"That's for sure" Gajeel concurred, sounding impressed." He managed to get bunny girl all hot just now. And she's clearly no slouch when it comes to kissin' either."

"Really?" The ice wizard cut in, with what sounded like a derisive snort." Cuz I beg to differ. I mean Lucy, sure, she did a great job. But lava - breath?! Watching him suck face was beyond nauseating! Ugh... So much cringe—pretty sure I just puked in my mouth just now. Anyone got some bleach on hand to permanently burn the gag-worthy image from my retinas?"

A/N: That's the first chapter of Fire & Gold folks! Hope you enjoyed and feel free to let me know what you think! Now for a little background info on this fic and rest of the TDDACP anthology series including tantric flames) for those who are wondering. As stated previously, TDDACP that's set shortly after the events of the original Fairytail and 100 years quest in a way (which explains how the series is slightly AU and canon divergent). Team Natsu managed to successfully complete the century quest in a matter of a few months which enabled resume their normal lives at the guild. Natsu is still a dragonslayer-demon hybrid with full access to his dragonslayer and etherious magic that he can tap into from either mode . Moreover, all elements of his heritage can play a major influence on his personality and strength as wizard (among other aspects). Anyways, said wizard is fully aware that he's head over heels for Lucy though finally worked up the courage to confess as seen in this chapter. I'd like to point to point out that Natsu technically being an etherious dragonslayer -demon hybrid is still pretty much established canon based on what we've seen in the anime/manga series (including in 100 years quest during that battle with Ignea).

Same goes for Nalu being mutually and passionately in love and other with all the types of passion attraction that comes from it- the physical and sexual types included (even if they have yet to fully confess). (Sidenote: Levy is still expecting but isn't that far along in her pregnancy yet). All in all , this pretty much sums up why this series is only slightly au and canon divergent. Hope this background information provides enough insight to you all!

In other news: major bummer about the Fairytail anime-aka one of my favourite animes/manga series ending for now, huh? I mean talk about there being a major void in our hearts now lol. That said, we still have 100 years quest, city heros, Eden's Zero along with that giant crossover manga(Fairytail, EZ, and Rave Master combined) which are all excellent series for us to continue to enjoy and look forward to! Plus, there's a great chance of that animated FT sequel/ 100 year quest anime adaption being in the works based on what we've been hearing.
