"Wiem, jak biolog powinien się przywitać z tymi gwiazdami. Witaj, Arachnocampa richardsae. Wiem nawet, jak ten kosmiczny blask powstaje w tym miejscu na końcu świata. Mógłbym włączyć latarkę -- ale nie zrobię tego na pewno, nie chcę skazić tej nieludzkiej ciemności takim zwykłym, wynalezionym przez człowieka światłem. Zobaczyłbym w nim girlandy diamentowych koralików. Każda girlanda to śluzowe sidła zastawione przez larwę pewnej muchówki, rozwieszone na cienkich niteczkach przejrzyste krople lepkiego płynu. Wszystkie połączone są kleistymi korytarzami, a w jednym z nich siedzi magik, "świecący robak", niewiele większy od larwy komara -- czai się tam i czeka na ofiary, które nieopatrznie wpadną w pułapkę. Cały sekret tej niezwykłej strategii mieści się na końcu jego odwłoka: to mikroskopijny gruczoł, w którym buzują złożone reakcje. Rozpisuję je sobie szybko w głowie: patyczaki chemicznych struktur, które rosną w kolejne kolczaste kształty, pączkują w chemiczne wiązania i wypluwają fotony niebieskiego światła.

Tak było jeszcze do niedawna. Bo potem wszystkie robacze gwiazdy spadły.

Reportaż pisze "biolog, ptasiarz, ekolog ewolucyjny". Był w Australii w lecie (tj. naszej zimie) przełomu 2019/2020, podczas największej fali upałów i pożarów, a następnie później, w lipcu 2020. Po przeczytaniu dwóch rozdziałów (pierwszy jest mieszaniną opisu lotu samolotem w pierwszych miesiącach pandemii oraz tłumaczenia, o co tu właściwie chodzi -- ocieplenie klimatyczne, ładny i nieinwazyjny termin, zostaje wyjaśnione, tak jak problem dwutlenku węgla oraz uczucie flight shame) nie wiem jeszcze dokładnie, w którą stronę zmierza autor -- sam przyznaje, że książka jest raczej układanką niż linearną historią -- ale wydaje mi się, że mogę wyznaczyć kilka ważnych elementów.

Słowa. Tekst pisze naukowiec, ale bez zbędnej otoczki. To, co warte lub konieczne do wytłumaczenia, potrafi wytłumaczyć. Przede wszystkim jednak opisuje: zdarzenia, zjawiska, naturę, krajobraz -- i robi to bardzo dobrze. Temat jest przygnębiający i poważny, ale słowa wciągają, każą iść dalej, zagłębiać się w kolejne strony. Plastyczność opisów powoduje, że jesteśmy w stanie wyobrazić sobie miejsca, w których autor przebywa.

Konkret. Ile to jest trzy miliardy. Co się stało z tym ptakiem, który upadł na ziemię. Co się wtedy czy kiedy indziej wydarzyło. "Czarne lato" to zbiór takich właśnie urywków, przybliżających nam odległe wydarzenia. I doskonale pokazujących rozmiar rozpaczy.

Dlaczego? Wydaje mi się, że przede wszystkim dla przestrogi. Dla nas, po drugiej stronie globu, pożary w Australii były mniej lub bardziej odrealnione. I choć zapewne ich skala została spowodowana konkretnymi czynnikami, to nie znaczy, że reszty świata nie może dotknąć to samo.

Chodź, pokażę ci, jak wygląda kraj, który stoi na skraju katastrofy klimatycznej. I jak za kilka, kilkanaście lat może wyglądać reszta naszej planety.

Reportage on the aftermath of the Black Summer, featuring hundreds of fires covering the Australian continent during the summer of 2019/2020. The author, a biologist, writes in a captivating manner: describes small details, concentrates on them instead of on the big numbers and terms that don't really say anything. The aim, as I understand after the first two chapters, is to show the reader what can (will?) happen to the whole planet if we aren't careful.
