With Halloween only a few days away, we fittingly conclude our Gothic series with a contemplation of those ghoulish creatures known as gargoyles. The word “gargoyle” derives from the Old French “gargoule” meaning “throat” and, strictly speaking, refers to the Gothic architectural detail that channels water away from the walls of buildings. Laon Cathedral, a thirteenth-century structure in Laon, France, is believed to have the earliest medieval gargoyles.

Scholars have long debated whether the chimerical design of these waterspouts was meant to ward off or embody evil spirits…or neither. Regarding gargoyles, art historian Lester Burbank Bridaham advises “we must be wary of reading in too much meaning.” Whether to protect, frighten, or entertain, gargoyles and their related grotesques have captured the human imagination for centuries. 

John Henry Parker's Architectural Glossary (1845-1846)

Engraved plate depicting various gargoyles found on English medieval buildings, ca. 1277-1480, from a mid-nineteenth century architectural glossary compiled by John Henry Parker. Wanting to see the Gothic Revival movement flourish, Parker also edited an edition of Thomas Rickman’s Gothic Architecture (1848) and published an Introduction to the Study of Gothic Architecture (1849).  

Victor Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris (1888)

Gargoyles loom large in this illustrated edition of Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris, also known by the English title The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The Notre Dame gargoyles do not come to life as they do in the 1996 Disney animated film adaptation, but, in a romantic sense, Quasimodo bears a kinship with the gargoyles since both form integral parts of the famous Parisian cathedral. Quasimodo imbues Notre Dame (including her gargoyles) with life: “Il semblait qu’il s’echappât de lui  ... une émanation mystérieuse qui animait toutes les pierres de Notre-Dame…” Illustrations by Ernest Biéler and Felician Myrbach. 

L. Frank Baum's Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (1908)

In L. Frank Baum’s Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, the Wizard, Dorothy, and the rest of their band of adventurers come across the Country of the Gargoyles (or “Gurgles” as Dorothy calls them). The gargoyles in the Ozian universe are sentient creatures who live in a world made entirely out of wood. The gargoyles themselves are also carved from wood and have magical wooden wings that give them the power of flight. In the course of battle with the Gargoyles, Dorothy’s cousin Zeb manages to capture the Gargoyle king and use him as a wooden club. Illustrations by John R. Neill.

Okay gotta get through playing the event. Ive been keeping myself from loojung up spoilers so i should be catching up.

I think at one pointbin the introduction i saw Rollo tapping his finger on his arm. .... Now its brrn a long time since i last saw Hunchback of Notre Dame but, wasnt there a scene that focused on the Judge doing that?

Oh my gosh wait. Thats the same design as the scarf Esmeralda left the Judge during her performance? When i first saw hom doing this last year (only saw up to a little while after they see the Gargoule for the first time I think) I thiught he dod it whenever he was internally hiding disgust? For whatever his problem was.

I love how these three are the ones in the back. I wonder what they're talking about.

Homebrew Race: Lesser Ettin

(mechanical elements for your use below readmore)

Ettins are giant, two-headed, cankerous orcs. They're heavy hitters, but their heads hardly work together outside of hunting and fighting. If it wasn't for their giant might they'd have to learn to get along with their other heads.

Lesser ettins don't have the giant might of their larger cousins. They've had to learn how to work together as part of larger teams so they don't argue with their other heads as much. They're still argumentative, but lesswe ettins tend to unite against conflict, this is true if they meet other lesser ettins as well.

Most lesser ettins are still quiet tall standing at six or seven feet and often heavier than most orcs of a similar height. Most lesser ettins hail from orc tribes, some tales say they're the offspring of orcs and true ettins, in these cases they often hold true to orc cultural traditions. lesser ettins almost always follow suit with the naming tradition of their larger cousins, each has one name and the two names are combined for the lesser ettin. An example of this naming of this convention is a lesser ettin with one head named Blarg and another named Gargoul being called Blargargoul.

Lesser Ettin Traits:

Ability Score Increase: Your Strength score increases by 2 and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Size: Your stand between six and seven feet tall, your size is medium.

Type: Your creature type is Humanoid

Speed: Your base walking speed is 30ft

Two Heads: You have advantage on saving throws against being blinded, charmed, deafened, frightened, stunned, or knocked unconscious.

Four Eyes, Four Ears, and Two Noses: You have advantage on perception checks relying on sight, sound, smell, or taste.

Wakeful: You can keep watch even when sleeping during a long rest, as one head stays awake while the other sleeps. You still only require 6 hours of total sleep time. While keeping watch with one head sleeping you do not gain advantage from the Four Eyes, Four Ears, and Two Noses trait.

Coordinated assault: You gain one of the following options:

You gain the Two-weapon Fighting fighting style. This let's you add your ability modifier to the bonus action attack from fighting with two-weapons.

You gain the Dual Wielder feat. which gives the following benefits; you have +1 AC when wielding seperate melee weapons in each hand, you can use two-weapon fighting even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding lack the light property, and you can draw or stow two one-handed weapons when you would normally only be able to draw or stow one.

Impish Intentions III - Tiny Dancer

A small discussion on the Kroashent Discord server (DM for invite!) led to another addition to the Kroashent - Impish Intentions Gargoul TF series, featuring the characters of Kroashent imped out to these cute little forms.  Morgiana radiates imp mischief in all of her forms, so she seemed like a natural candidate for another entry into the series, complete with a new outfit to match!

The Gargoul/Imps of Kroashent are always a lot of fun to draw, so they've become one of my go-to stress relief drawings.  I couldn't decide on an outfit for Morgiana, so I made several.  You can see them and a few others on my my Patreon page link below.

Gargling gargoyles

Today I learned…a couple of interesting things about gargoyles. So let’s make “gargoyle” the Word of the Day.

The first thing I learned – and let’s give a shout out to the Haggard Hawks Twitter feed, which deals with interesting and often obscure words – is that gargoyles, those monstrous stone creatures attached to the outer walls of buildings, must channel rainwater away from the building. If they don’t act as waterspouts that way, they are not technically gargoyles. If they are just plain old ugly statues, they are properly called “grotesques.” Because they’re, well…you know.

The second thing I learned was courtesy of my lovely wife, who wondered (because of the water connection) if “gargoyle” was related to “gargle.” My wife is one smart cookie, and sure enough, they are related. The word “gargoyle” comes from the Old French “gargole” (or “gargoule”), meaning “throat.” The word “gargle” comes from the French “gargouiller” (to gurgle or bubble), and “gargouiller” is derived from “gargole” (throat). Oh, and the modern French word “gargouille” means…wait for it…gargoyle.

So, to recap, if it spits water out of its ugly mouth, it’s a gargoyle. Without the water, it’s just grotesque.

The husband pretended to be dead to fool a gargoule, but the wife was not having it, transformed into a giant demon and slammed the Gargoule against the electricity cord several thousand times before giving it the worst and most tortoures place in hell, cuz shes the queen of hell.
