This is a book that has been on my To-Be Read list for quite sometime and I don't even remember why I had added it. I normally don't read books without reading what it is about first and I am sure when I added this to my list 5 years ago that I read what it was about. When I took it off my shelf, blew the dust off, and opened it though, I did so without reading the summary part of it. I just cracked it open, listened to the spine crack with its first crease, and began reading. Glad I did as this truly is going to be a keeper. One for the ages and one to be shared for generations. It is ageless in the sense really on who can read it. I would say 12 and up for as young as twelve they may understand some of the things that happen. This is also a great history lesson book.

As a Canadian myself, but one who lives in Alberta and not in Quebec, I did not know much about Quebec's history. We learned a little about FLQ but not much and I felt that The Home For Unwanted Girls definitely shed some great light on that part of history. As well we did not learn about Duplessis and who he was or what he done. That history was all dark and new to me so as I read I learned as well. I found that the author truly captured the times of 1940's to -1970's quite well, the history behind it, and the hardships. The history of the Catholic church with the nuns, orphanages, and mental institutions.

I would be lying if I said that I didn't cry when I read this book. Cried like a baby in many parts and screamed with fury in others. This book will send you on a big rollercoaster of emotions but it isn't to say that it will leave you wrecked. Some scenes may destroy you, wreck you for days, and still invite you to come read. While reading, I found that the author gave great detail in such a way you were no longer reading, you were living. You can see the Supreme Seeds store, the outside and inside interior, and smell the musky smell of the seeds that Maggie smelt. You can clearly vision where Maggie lives, her life, and her surroundings. You can see the corn field of Gabriels, the sun shining down on them as they fall in love with each other. The smell of the ocean near the end, the lakes, the rivers, hear the street cars, the bustle of Montreal, the sounds of the insane in the Mental Institutions. It was so well detailed that you lived it and were reading your memories. It was so vivid and well written that I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Such a great read and it is going to be a keeper on my shelf for sure.
