Hi! I’m starting to learn French and one thing that’s both cool and weird to me is how everything is gendered in a way (referring to someone/whose saying the statement/etc.) and I was wondering how that relates to people who identity as non-binary or gender fluid in France? Are there equivalents to they/them pronouns or neo pronouns in French?

I do plan on doing my own research about this but I figured since I love your blog and you’re really open about different cultural lgbtq+ communities I’d try here first!

That's an awesome question... with a complicated answer lmao. So buckle up and bear with me !

Basically, you can't be non-binary in French. The community found ways to do it but it's not mainstream. Most of the time, they're going to get misgendered or will have to misgender themselves to get understood.

Some things I'm going to list here are not proper French. Actually, they can even be forbidden in some circumstances, according to the law (the use of inclusive language, and more specifically le point médian, was made illegal in schools in 2021 for ex) or simply because your company etc forbids it. So use this wisely, there is a time and place for inclusive language in France.

That said, things have greatly developed over the last two decades. Which was partly because of the queer community and mainly because of feminists, who are tired of the way French erases women. More and more people are using inclusive language, at least in some circumstances and circles (for ex, i wrote my master's thesis in inclusive language and it was accepted bc i was in a leftist faculty). And inclusive language is debated as a serious issue now, which is saying something.

So, how do you use inclusive language in practice?

There are different ways, as it's informal and mostly new. People are still testing new things and trying out various methods. You can stick to one or alternate or mix them up.

Pronouns

Officially, there isn't a gender neutral pronoun. We don't have an equivalent to they. You're either talking about a man or a woman. If it's both, you use masculine pronouns ("masculine trumps feminine" rule). Same thing if you don't know the gender of the person ("masculin générique").

The most common neopronoun is "iel" (plural : iels), which is obviously a contraction of the masculine pronoun "il" and its feminine equivalent "elle". It works for nb folks or to avoid talking about someone's gender or to refer to a group of men and women. So it's equally used by the queer community and feminists.

I'm pretty sure other neopronouns exist but I can't think of any at the top of my head.

Choosing the right words

Sometimes, inclusive language is just about learning to use alternatives.

Instead of using gendered words, you can choose to use gender-neutral words or words "épicènes", aka words which are identical in their feminine and masculine form. For ex, instead of "homme politique" or "femme politique", you can use "personnalité politique". Personnalité is a feminine word but it's actually gender-neutral as you can use it for women and men alike. "Élève" (student) is épicène, as a female student and a male student are both referred to as "élève". Although épicène words as a gender-neutral option only work in their plural form, as you have to choose either a feminine or masculine article for the singular ("les élèves" is inclusive but it can only be "un" or "une" élève).

As good as this method is, it can be quite limitating. Your vocabulary will be drastically reduced and it can be quite hard to master that kind of speech so you can reach the point where you don't have to think everything over for ages before you open your mouth.

With oral French, you can take it a step further by choosing words that sound the same even if they have a different spelling. Ex, friend is "ami" or "amie" but it's pronounced the same way so if you say it out loud, people can't know how you're gendering it (as long as there isn't a gendered article/word with it ofc).

It avoids misgendering people but the downside is that, as masculine is considered neutral in French, people will often think : no gender specified = masculine. Not even because they're sexist or whatever, it's just so ingrained in our brains that it's a knee-jerk reaction.

That's also why most feminists often prefer to use explicitly feminine words when talking about women. For ex, they prefer the word "autrice" to "auteure" (female writer) because the second one sounds the same as its masculine version "auteur". And as previously mentionned, out loud, people will assume by default you're talking about a man. It's a big debate though, lots of women prefer words that sound masculine - going as far as refusing to use feminine words at all! Which sounds cool and gender-bending as fuck but in reality comes from feminine words traditionally seen as less legitimate and serious. Even today, if you look up the word empress "impératrice" in a French dictionary, the first definition that comes up is "wife of an emperor". "Woman ruling a country" comes second. Using a masculine title to refer to women can also be a way to mock them and show they're not welcome (a french deputy got fined in 2014 because he called the female president of the national assembly "Madame le président" and refused to use the feminine title "Madame la présidente").

Recently the tendency and official guidelines have been to feminize words, so I'd say go with that by default, but respect other people's choice if they specify how they want to be called.

Anyway I'm getting off-track but what I meant was that in French, if you avoid talking about gender, you're automatically erasing women (and nb people). So if you want to include everyone, you need to make it obvious.

Inclusivity as a statement

The most common way to make women and men equally visible is the "point médian" rule, which you can also use to refer to non-binary people as it avoids picking a specific gender.

Basically, it means pasting together the masculine and feminine forms of a word and using dots/middle dots/hyphens/parentheses/capital letters to create an inclusive word. For ex, instead of saying acteur (♂️) or actrice (♀️) for actor, you'll write "acteur.ice". For the plural form, there are two schools of thought : either you separate the feminine and masculine form AND the suffix used to signify the plural, or you don't. Aka, "acteur.ice.s" or "acteur.ices". Personally I prefer the second option because less dots makes it easier to read and faster to write, but it's an individual choice, both work.

There are two major downsides to this method : it only works in writing + it isn't doable for every word, as feminine and masculine words can be quite different and pasting them together that way would be unintelligible. Ex, "copain" and "copine" (friend or boyfriend/girlfriend depending on the context) would give something like "cop.ain.ine"...

You can work around that by choosing alternative words (as previously stated!). And it's still a pretty good method, especially as it works for any type of word (adjectives etc). Some people argue that it's hard to read and ugly but personally I think it's just a matter of habit (although it does pose a problem for people using screen readers). Be aware that it is the most controversial version of inclusive writing, as it's the furthest structure from how languages typically work.

If you don't like dots or want an alternative for oral speech, you can also straight up create new words that sound both feminine and masculine, making them gender-neutral. To use the previous example, "copain" and "copine" become "copaine".

Obviously, this only works if it's obvious which words they're based on. I think it's a great way to make French more inclusive but I'd advise against using it with uninitiated people as it would probably confuse them more than anything. This method is still quite niche.

An inclusive, yet binary language

As you've probably figured out, inclusive language remains quite binary in the way we approach it. It's more about making things both masculine and feminine than transcending gender and creating gender-neutral alternatives. Probably because inclusive language was more often a will to stop women from being erased rather than a non-binary friendly gesture.

Which means, there are also some rules that were created to avoid the "masculine trumps feminine rule" but don't allow room for non-binarity at all. I'll still explain them because they're interesting and you might encounter them at some point.

The proximity rule ("règle de proximité") is one of these. It existed in Ancient Greek and Latin but was dropped in Modern French in favor of the masculine trumps feminine rule. Basically, you gender things according to what's closest in the sentence instead of systematically using masculine words to gender a mixed group. For ex, instead of saying "Les hommes et les femmes sont beaux" you say "Les hommes et les femmes sont belles", as the subject "femmes" is closer to the adjective "beau/belle" than "hommes".

Another method is to systematically use both masculine and feminine words (which I personally find excruciating to write and read). Meaning, instead of writing "Les étudiants mangent à la cantine" (students eat at the cafeteria), you'll write "Les étudiantes et les étudiants mangent à la cantine".

This is mainly for the subject of the sentence : adjectives and such are gendered according to the masculine trumps feminine rule. The point is to explicitly include women, not to make the sentence unintelligible or gender-neutral.

When following this method, you also have to pay attention to whether you put the feminine subject first or the masculine. The rule is to follow alphabetical order. For ex, in "l'égalité entre les femmes et les hommes", "femmes" comes first because F comes before H. But in "Les auteurs et les autrices de roman", "auteurs" comes first because E comes before R. Etc.

This method is common as it's the only inclusive language you can get away with, given that it's a valid way of speaking French. It's even mandatory in some situations now, like in job descriptions for the french administration, in the spirit of gender equality.

So, how do I gender a non-binary person?

In short, you can use the pronoun iel + avoid gendered words and/or use the point médian and/or make up new words.

But keep in mind that if you're not talking to someone familiar with these rules, you'll have some explaining to do. And looots of people are still very anti inclusive language, because they're sexist and/or transphobic, ignorant, language purists, etc. A few years ago it was the thing to be angry about for conservatives and anti-feminists so it's still very controversial. But if you're in a trans inclusive queer space or talking with intersectionnal leftists, go for it !

Where do we begin?

-- Very disingenuous for multiple outlets to run with "the West”. Though this initial AP article does specify that this refers to the Western Hemisphere, the choice to run headlines with “West” kinda implies that there are no other island prisons in “The West” (as in the European Union, the United States, Australia, etc.).

-- One of the most infamous incarceration schemes on the planet is Australia’s “Pacific Solution,” a “solution” to refugee migration centered on the imprisonment of asylum seekers on island prisons, including the infamous prisons at Nauru and Manus, both opened initially in 2001, and re-fortified after 2012. (Nauru is extremely isolated, in the South Pacific, 3000 kilometers away from the Australian coast; the Manus detention centre is far away off the northeast coast of Papua.) Since 2012, over 3,125 people have been sent to Nauru while over 4,180 people have been sent to Manus. (The “last refugee held on the Pacific island of Nauru under Australia’s offshore detention policy” was “evacuated” to mainland Australia only on 24 June 2023, not even a month prior to this headline.)

-- Obviously the EU incarcerates refugees on Mediterranean islands, notoriously at Moria on Lesbos, whose international reputation as the home of Sappho has been supplanted by its reputation as a de facto prison for asylum seekers. In October 2015, over 10,000 people landed on Lesbos in just one day. In 2017, the island averaged 2,500 arrivals per month. As of early 2023, Lesbos (along with Kos, Leros, Chios, and Samos) is hosting over 4,500 people who are stuck in “reception and identification centers.”

-- Merely a few days before this headline about Honduras, international outlets were profiling Honduras’s direct neighbor, El Salvador, with headlines like “Inside El Salvador’s new ‘mega prison’” (Al Jazeera) and, within the past couple months, headlines like “Prisoners are being tortured to death in El Salvador’s prisons” (VICE News).

-- From less than a week before this AP headline, we have BBC: “El Salvador’s secretive mega-jail.”

-- Don’t forget nearby Tapachula’s detention of asylum seekers.

Cecilia has left Mclaren and is now with Mercedes, Daniel Ricciardo taking her place in Mclaren, saying goodbye to her team and to Lando was hard, she cried alot on her last day racing with them and her last day with the team. Her and Lando exchanged helmets, once the cameras were off she was in tears hugging her teammate. It’s not like they won’t see each other but they’re each other’s first teammate, they came into the sport and helped each other adapt and develop as drivers and grew incredibly close.

Cecilia feared Max’s reaction when she told him she agreed to Mercedes’ offer, but her boyfriend surprisingly encouraged her, this is her best move.

The day Cecilia went in to talk to Toto about her contract before she signed it, she knew she had to tell him about her relationship with Max. Admittedly she should’ve told him very early on, but she wasn’t as confident as she is now.

Knocking on the team principal's door, he called for her to come in, the female opened the door and saw Toto behind his desk, he took off his glasses and sat them on the table. Cecilia closed the door behind her and greeted the Austrian man. She really admires Toto so much.

“I hope you aren’t reconsidering.” Toto said once they sat down, Cecilia across from him.

“No, no I haven’t but you may change your mind.” Cecilia said pushing back her hair, a habit she developed when she’s nervous.

“What’s wrong?” Toto frowned and leaned forward a little.

“I should’ve told you this when you first came to be, but I was a bit hesitant and admittedly scared.” Cecilia started out, she looked at Toto, she wasn’t ashamed or embarrassed, and she’d understand if he changed his mind. “So, uh, what would you say if I told you I’m in a relationship with another driver.”

Toto leaned back in his chair, it isn’t as bad as he thought, everyone already knows about Nathalie, Mclaren did a good job handling the media in that aspect, but if Cecilia and the other driver came out to the public then it’ll be something Mercedes and the other team will have to deal with.

“Who is it?” Toto asked, and tried to think of who the female has been spending a lot of time with, however her group of friends is big, she’s the only female, there’s a lot of males, but he was leaning towards Charles. The two are a fan favourite, and they spend a lot of time together.

“Max.” Cecilia didn’t take her eyes off Toto, she tried to read him but he was giving him nothing.

“Verstappen?” He had to be sure.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Start of lockdown, so just a little under a year.”

“Huh.” He wasn’t expecting this, RedBull is Mercedes’ biggest rival, but regardless he never saw that one coming, they let nothing on. Nothing different from other drivers that is.

“It hasn’t affected my driving, me and him on track we’re rivals, I’ve done so much better last year than the year before it, and we’ve never shared anything about our teams, so secrecy is something you don’t have to scared of, I - I’ve always wanted to drive for Mercedes and I’ll never do anything to sabotage that.” Cecilia may have word vomited but she wanted to get her words out before Toto made his decision.

“I can see that, this hasn’t changed my opinion, but to be sure, we’ll have an NDA written up for you as well.” Toto said and Cecilia nodded, fair is fair.

“Yeah, whatever you want.” Cecilia breathed a sigh of relief, they talked a little more before she went to leave.

“Cecilia.” Toto called the driver. “I trust you, welcome to the team.”

“Thank you.”

She called Max once she was out of the building.

“What did he say?” Was the first thing that came out of Max’s mouth when he picked up.

“He said I’m in the team, it doesn't change anything, but i’ll have to sign an NDA.” Cecilia was smiling like crazy. “What about you? When are you telling Christian?”

“Uh, I don’t know, I don’t know if I should tell him first or dad first.” Max has been debating this for a while, his mum and sister already met you, but his dad is in the dark about this.

“Who will make the bigger deal about it?” She already knew, but she isn’t going to say it.

“My- my dad probably.” He hated how he knew his dad would react, he won’t be happy.

“Then tell Christian, that way you have backup.” Cecilia knows how intense Jos can be, Max loves him but he’s done some questionable things and Cecilia just doesn’t want Max to face him alone, she doesn’t know how much of a help she can be. “We can invite him over, he can meet my parents.”

“No, no he’ll want me to tell him first.” Cecilia hummed.

“Let’s talk more when I’m back.” Cecilia said they were currently in the UK, Christian invited Max and Perez to his house, and Cecilia had her meetings and things with Mercedes to wrap up before the beginning of the season.

The day before the dinner Christian was hosting at his estate, Max met him one on one. Max went to his house for more privacy, the men sat in Christian’s office alone so they could talk.

“What’s on your mind?” Christian knew Max since he was young, and he likes to believes he knows him very well, he could tell his driver wanted to tell him something but was hesitant.

“What would you say if I was dating someone that works for another team?” Max asked, wanting to see his reaction to that question before dropping the big bomb.

“As long as there’s no secrets shared, then I don’t see anything wrong with it.” Christian answered growing curious, his mind tried to run over all the people he saw Max with from other teams, but he came blank, he only saw Max with other drivers, they’re the only people he interacted with from other teams. “What team?”

“Would it matter?” Max asked his face not showing any emotion, he had his walls up at that moment.

“Not really, but I would like to know.”

“Mcl-Mercedes.” It clicked in Christain’s mind who Max was talking about, Mclaren to Mercedes, Cecilia.

“You both have to know that when it comes out, and it will at one point, that Cecilia will be getting a lot of hate.” Christian warned, the female in his eyes has been causing a bit of a stir since she came into the sport. She is talented, he has to admit, but she’s a PR nightmare in his opinion. Mercedes definitely have their hands full with her now. He doesn’t really want her to distract Max either, but for Max to come tell him he must be serious about it.

“We’ve talked about it, we know the risk.” Max clenched his jaw.

“She has a daughter.”

“I know.”

“How long have you been together?”

“Start of lockdown.” this was kind of a repeat of what Cecilia had to go through, but it was expected, both team principals wanted the best for their teams and drivers, both are doing well and they want them to do better, any distraction could coast them points and championship.

“Okay, bring her with you tomorrow, I want to meet her officially.” Christian had to see them together to make a decision, upsetting Max won’t get him anywhere. He never really spoke with Cecilia, he’s of course spoken about her in the media and has seen her around the paddock and what not but he doesn’t think they spoke a word to each other, maybe a polite hello in passing.

Christian is happy he asked Max to bring Cecilia, it’s his first time seeing Max let go and laugh and just have fun like he was at that moment, his arm was around Cecilia. They looked happily in love, always making sure the other was close.

A few drivers were also present, Daniel, Pierre, Alex and Checo. And they all knew, no doubt about it. No one batted an eyelash at the couple, to be honest the drivers were used to the couple in private they were always stuck at the hip. You wouldn’t know it though if you saw them in any place that had cameras and phones that didn’t belong to any of their friends and people they trusted. They’re so good at hiding their relationship.

“This is why women shouldn’t be in sports.” Helmut muttered under his breath his distaste to the female clear as he glared her down, Christian sighed, having caught his words.

“Try to not let Max hear you.” Christian advised, Max is a protective person by nature, he loves his friends and family, his close circle he holds close to him and doesn’t like anyone to come near them and that includes Cecilia now.

“Well, he needs to wake up.” Helmut didn’t let it go, taking a swing from his drink.

“That’s the thing, he is.” Christian pats his shoulder and walks away, leaving the old man on his own sulking.

Christian knew then that any thought about breaking them up would cause more trouble than it’s worth, that only brought on one question, how the hell are they supposed to tell Jos?

Max was at the RedBull factory to run some simulator work, and Jos had made it there. He stood back watching Max as he ran through the tests, his eyes like a hawk taking in every little mistake.

Christian just made it in the room, seeing Jos’s imposing aura. Let’s just say that a lot of the RB mechanics like to stay away from the Dutchman. Christian makes his way over to Jos, they greet each other before they watch Max finish up.

Max and Christian share a look before Christian leads the father son duo to his office for privacy. It’s now or never, Jos will be mad that he’s not the first to know, but as the season starts and progresses Christian has an inkling that more people will know.

“What’s going on?” Jos asks, seeing the look on both their faces.

“Nothing, I just wanted to tell you something?” Max said his eyes met his dad’s. “I am seeing Cecilia… Hansson.”

“What? Seeing her? Seeing her as in-” The frown on his face and the distaste in his voice is very telling about what he was feeling.

“Dating, we’ve been dating for almost a year now.” Max confirms and he holds his dad’s gaze, Jos’s face got red his frown looked like it got stuck.

“Jos this may have come as a shock but-” Christian said as he tried to stop Jos from saying anything that’ll blow the subject out of proportions.

“But nothing! She’s a rival, she’s always been a rival, a mclaren driver!” “Mercedes.” “Doesn’t fucking matter! What are you thinking Max?”

“Dad you’re making a big deal out of nothing.” Max tried to calm his dad, but he barely said his words before he was interrupted once again.

“You can date anyone, why does it have to be her? She’ll distract you, or take information out of you to Mercedes, this is irresponsible, I didn’t spend years getting you here for you to throw it all way from some woman! She’s only here because of her money, she’s always been in the sport because of her money, and-and she has a daughter, a fucking child Max! She’s a whore-”

“DAD! Stop okay! Stop.” Max was on his feet in an instant

“Jos that’s enough.” Jos was glaring at his son almost panting. “This isn’t helping, Jos, I talked to Max about it and both him and Cecilia have signed contracts to keep any and all info about the other team a secret.” Christian said and sighed looking at both men. “Max sit down, just sit down.” Max sat back in his chair, but the frown on his face stayed. “Now can we be civil about this and talk it out."

"There's nothing to talk about." Jos dismissed Christian his glare still fixated on his son. Max scoffed, he really doesn't like fighting with his dad but Cecilia is a fact not an option and if he has any say in it isn't going anywhere.

"I'm leaving then, when you want to talk call me." Max left the room before any of the older men could say anything.

Horner sighed and rubbed his forehead in defeat. This isn't what he had hoped for. He now had the task of talking to Jos on his own.

Yeah, Jos was unconvinced. The season just started and he's still unconvinced. She was under instruction from Max to not speak with him alone, so when she was walking around the paddock and saw the Dutch man walking her way she did a 180 and started walking the other way, spotting an Aston Martin kit walking close by she changed her direction and slipped by people until she reached the older man’s side.

“Quick act like we’re in deep conversation and shouldn’t be interrupted.” Cecilia whisper shouted and the German driver looked confused, he could see Cecilia’s eye kept darting to someone over his shoulder, he only managed to take a peak. “Don’t look!”

“Mind telling me why you’re hiding for Jos?” Sebastian was confused, he had no idea why she’d be hiding from the father of her boyfriend, unless. “Did you and Max break up?”

“What? No!” She said instantly sounding offended by the statement.

“Then why are you hiding from his dad?”

“He doesn’t like me, and I’m under instructions to avoid him.” Cecilia told Sebastian who moved so she’s mostly hidden by him, only then Cecilia’s eyes settled on Seb’s.

“Why deosn’t he like you?” Seb knew how harsh Jos can be, but Cecilia is an incredible woman, who anyone would be lucky to have her.

“Uh not 100% sure but it’s along of the lines of, I’m a rival, I’m a teen parent, I’m a female ruining the sport, and I’m a spy… yeah that’s it… i think… that I know of.” Cecilia nodded to herself once she listed.

“Huh.”

“Yeah.”

“Only one thing you listed is true.” Seb pointed out and Cecilia shrugged muttering an ‘I don't know’. “It’s stupid, but I think Max will get it handled.”

“Hope so, because that would make family gatherings awkward.” Cecilia laughed it off, but it bothered her, of course it did. She hates being the reason why the Verstappen men were fighting, things are tense between them and in turn the garage, but there’s nothing she could do. She’s not leaving Max, and she likes to believe that Max isn’t leaving her as well.

Cecilia has managed to stay out of Jos’ way, even though it was hard. It seemed like the man was everywhere all of the sudden, Max still wasn’t talking to his father but Jos insisted on coming to almost every race.

It was the Dutch GP round 13, Max’s home race. That meant that a lot of his family were present, including his mum and sister. Max did book a place for the four of them to have dinner the day after the race.

Qualifying day. Cecilia was somehow alone at the Mercedes garage sitting at a table in the corner going over some data, the garage was in a state of unusual calm. In a few hours the calm will be gone and the storm will be here. Cecilia was in her own world with her headphones on and focused on the papers in her hands, she was startled when she heard the chair in front of her scrape on the floor as it was dragged. She looked up and her heart dropped, meeting eyes that are familiar in colour but nothing else.

“Mr. Verstappen.” Cecilia has never really spoken to Jos before, not when they were young and certainly not when she got into F1. her headphones were off and the papers on the table facing down.

“Drop the formalities, why are you with my son?” Cecilia was startled to say the least, her eyes moved around the garage, and a couple mechanics eyed the man in suspicion.

“W-what? what do you mean?” This is one of the last things she expected him to ask, to be honest she just expected him to tell her to break up with Max and maybe call her a few names and that’s it.

“You can’t be that slow.” the Dutch glared at Cecilia, she blinked a few times, she was too stunned.

“With all due respect, Mr Verstappen, but the reason I’m dating your son is between me and him.” Cecilia said gaining her bearings, she isn’t about to allow Jos to walk all over her, those days of men disrespecting her and her taking it are over. “But I’m sure you can take out a few things.” Cecilia held his menacing gaze and didnt waver as she started counting on her fingers. “It’s not for money, i have more than enough, it’s not for red bull secrets, I never asked about a single thing about Red Bull, it’s not for attention, no one knows but our friends and family.” She shrugs and laeans back in her chair. “So you can rest assured that I’m not using your son.”

“This is bullshit, you’re trapping him.” Jos pointed his finger at the table, his anger clear as day, he didn’t like her tone and her nonchalant attitude. “And just because your family is okay with this, doesn’t mean that we are.”

“Sophie and Victoria are okay with us, besides-“

“You met them?” He asked in disbelief, he’s usually at every race so it made sense in his mind that he’d be the one to meet Cecilia first.

“Yes.” Cecilia muttered, thinking that maybe it was a bad decision to tell him this.

“Un-fucking-believable.”

“With respect, Mr verstappen, but Max isn’t a child, he knows what’s best for him and he’s a good judge of character.” Cecilia said leaning closer to the table, she never wanted to be on bad terms with Max’s dad, but when he came in with prejudice and his own opinions and notions it was hard not to take the defensive side.

“Jos! I don’t believe you have access to the Mercedes garage.” Cecilia felt a hand on her shoulder, but she didn’t have to look up to see it’s her team principal.

“I was just leaving.” Jos muttered his glare moved from Cecilia to Toto, but the Mercedes principal didn’t let it affect him, family matters always leaves people a bit sensitive.

“Maybe you should trust your son’s judgments.” Toto said for the Dutch as he was leaving, but Jos didn’t react at all to this. “Are you okay, Cece?”

“Yes, thank you.” Cecilia looked up at Toto with a smile of gratitude.

“No worries, some of the mechanics were a bit startled to see Jos here so they called me.” Even if they only called Toto in fear of information being stolen it still made Cecilia feel more welcomed and loved in her new team.

Cecilia took out her phone and pressed Max’s name from her recently called list.

“Cilia, I’m a bit busy.” Max said once he picked up, the only reason he picked up is because they usually never call each other in the middle of working hours only text.

“Sorry, amour but your dad was just here-“

“Did something happen? Did he do something?” Max cuts her off and steps away from his engineers.

“No-no, we talked and I may have said that your mum and victoria know about us and he’s a bit pissed at that.” Cecilia wasn’t about to tell Max everything before quali, they’ll sit down and talk later in her hotel room at the end of the day.

“Anything else happen?” Max asked, he knows how his father can get, there has to be more.

“Nothing that couldn’t wait until tonight.” Cecilia answered him and looks around her garage from her spot in the corner.

“Cilia tell-.”

“Max, nothing will change from now to tonight, you should get back to what you were doing.”

“Okay, but if he comes over again you call me okay?”

“Okay… He'll come around and I love you mon amour.”

“I hope so, and I love you too.”

Yeah, it sucks that Bobo and Misha were not given the space to talk about the confession scene in the same way Oliver and the 911 peeps are doing with Buckley right now. Cas' coming out and his "I love you" to Dean should have gotten a bigger celebration than just Misha speaking about it on his own. Hell, Ruthie and other cast members tried to show support online and got shut down by haters and antis. Misha should not have been the only one out there in 2020 and 2021 talking about it. But he was. And yes, prior to 15x18 he went from safely playfully supporting Destiel to full on doing so right after the confession scene. Even without backup from his costar. Just like he was the only one to actively advocate for HIS character's canon queerness. Where was EW for Misha back in 2020? They definitely spoke to Jensen about it. And no, chaos machine had nothing to do with Misha talking about queer Castiel. The way certain Jensen fans try to give credit where it isn't earned and using Misha to do so should be studied.

And I'll add that yes, Jensen has grown over the years. He's more accepting of fans canon of bi Dean and has always happily signed and praised destiel fan art. He's proud of what Misha did with Cas and has said that Dean and Cas should have a conversation about what happened. But he still hasn't said the words Cas is queer. He still can't say destiel. He also has said in so many ways he doesn't see Dean as queer and even has stated Cas' confession can be open for interpretation. So while I'm proud of his obvious growth, y'all not bout to give him credit for what Misha was out here doing on his own.

I remember when everyone was saying Jensen has no power at CE cons. So now that the narrative calls for it, y'all are now saying he has power at CE. Suggesting that he made changes with said power that coincides with Misha talking more openly about queer at CE is truly a reach.

- Momento con in 2021(non CE con) where Misha happily talked about queer castiel and cas and Dean wanting to bang each other.

- German con in 2021 when Misha again talked about queer Castiel, Destiel, and had a positive reaction to a fan's "Dean is bi" t-shirt that had the audience cheering, meanwhile Jensen stans were crying on twitter that Jensen should be doing more euro cons (this was during Jensen's silent era, mind you).

- Misha's cameos where he had destiel trending and also talked about queer Castiel. He also talked about when Cas fell in love with Dean. Also the Cameo where he jokingly said "Cas, you can do better" about being in love with Dean.

- his virtual interviews in late 2020. And his pride posts each June. his interview when at a French con where he talked about Cas being a queer icon(y'all got mad at him for that one, too).

I slam my hand down onto my phone, turning the alarm off. I feel the bed jolt as Elise and Lacey jump onto it. I laugh as they nudge my face, trying to wake me up more. “I’m up, I’m up,” I mumble, sitting up. My dogs jump off the bed and run to the stairs. I climb out of bed and get ready to take them outside. Clipping on the leashes, I let Elise and Lacey lead me outside. We wander around the block, the dogs sniffing the same things they do every day. They need to make sure that nothing has changed in the past 24 hours.

The puppies take off upstairs once we arrive home. I follow them up the stairs, making sure they have enough food and water for the day. “Okay, girls. I need you to behave for me,” I say, giving both of them kisses on their heads. I reach the bottom of the stairs as Louis and Estelle walk through the front door. “Good morning, Estelle. Good morning, Louis,” I greet them.

“Good morning, Adaline. How did the rest of your night go?” Louis asks, heading for the office.

“Really interesting!” I laugh. Louis and Estelle stop to look at me, both of them raising their eyebrows. “I forgot to lock the door after you guys left, and I had an unexpected visitor,” I start to explain.

Louis interrupts me before I can tell them who the visitor was. “That’s dangerous! You can’t forget to lock the doors!” He scolds me.

“I know, I know! But this was a good visitor! It was Max Verstappen!” I respond. Louis’ mouth drops open. Estelle looks between us.

“Max Verstappen? Isn’t he that Formula 1 driver?” Estelle asks, looking confused.

“Yeah, he’s the one who won the world championship this year,” Louis turns to her. He turns back to me, looking sceptical, “Are you sure it was Max Verstappen? You weren’t in some fever dream?” I scoff, rolling my eyes. I put my hands on my hips.

“Yes, I’m sure. Considering he spent at least 30 minutes here, I don’t think I was hallucinating or having a fever dream,” I smile. “Now come on, we’re opening soon!” I wave my hands, shooing them into the office to put their stuff up.

“Too bad it wasn’t Charles,” Louis calls, as I’m about to enter the kitchen. Louis and I have a playful rivalry going on as he’s an avid Charles fan. I laugh, shaking my head. I enter the kitchen, getting everything in the bakery ready for the day.

I hear the door’s bell ring right at 6 am, as I’m putting some croissants in the oven. “Adaline, there’s someone here who would like to see you,” I hear Louis call. My eyebrows knit in confusion. I wipe my hands on my apron as I walk out of the kitchen.

“Oh, bonjour Max!” I greet him. I walk up the counter. I feel both Estelle’s and Louis’ presence behind me.

“Bonjour, Adaline,” Max smiles at me, before looking at the menu. As he looks at it, I turn to Louis, mouthing I told you so. He just shrugs, before I turn back to Max. “What would you recommend? My trainer told me to pick something up for us for after working out,” Max asks, looking from the display to me.

I hum, thinking. “Well, I assume you’re going to want something light. I’d go with either some scones or croissants.” Max nods, looking at our options of scones and croissants.

“Can I take two of your blueberry scones and two of your regular croissants?” He asks.

“Of course,” I say, grabbing a bag. As Louis rings up Max, I grab his pastries. “Have a good day, Max,” I smile.

“You too, Adaline,” he says, waving bye. I wave back as he leaves. I whirl around, looking at Louis. “I told you!” I laugh. Louis holds his hands up.

“Alright! Alright! I believe you now!” Louis laughs. I laugh as I walk back into the kitchen to continue baking.

I look up from placing some pastries on the display as the bell on the door rings. “Good afternoon, Max. Did you have a good Christmas?” I grin.

“I did! I spent it with my family back in the Netherlands. Did you have a good one?” Max smiles. I nod, finishing up the display.

“I did. I spent it with Louis and Estelle,” I say, “Now, what can I get you?” Max takes a look at the display and then the menu.

“I’ll try one of your cupcakes and a pain du chocolat,” he answers.

“Good choices, good choices. These cupcakes are my guilty pleasure,” I say, grabbing a cupcake and pain du chocolat. I place them in our to go box and ring up Max.

“Where are Estelle and Louis?” Max asks, looking around and taking the box from me.

“I give them the days off between Christmas and New Years. The bakery never gets so busy that I need to have them working at all, but I like the company. Plus they’re basically like my parents,” I shrug. Max walks to one of our tables and sits down.

“Okay. Tell them hi for me next time you see them,” Max says. He shifts in his seat a couple of times. He opens his mouth to say something else but then closes it.

“Everything okay, Max?” I ask, concerned. I sit down across from him, waiting to see if he’ll tell me.

“I wanted to thank you for helping me through the panic attack the other week. I’ve never had one before, so I didn’t know what to do,” Max explains.

“Max, you don’t have to thank me for helping you. I know how tough they are to go through alone. I wouldn’t want anyone to experience that,” I softly smile.

“Okay, but I still wanted to thank you, so I thought I’d give you this as a thank you,” he says, sliding me an envelope. I look at him confused, picking up the envelope. I open it and gasp. Inside is a paddock pass to the Red Bull garage.

“Max! I can’t take this! You didn’t have to get me anything as a thank you!” I exclaim, pushing it back towards him.

“I wanted to,” he says, pushing it back to me. “It’s a pass to the Red Bull garage during the Bahrain Grand Prix. It should get you in on all three days.” I take the pass and inspect it.

“Thank you, Max,” I say, looking up. He just smiles and takes a bite of his cupcake. The bell rings as someone enters. “Thank you again, Max.” I stand up and walk behind the counter. “Hello, welcome to Delicieux Gateries!” I greet the customer. As I take their order, Max waves bye. I wave back, before continuing with the customer.

“Welcome back, Max,” I grin, as he walks through the door.

“Thank you, Adaline. How is your day going?” Max explains, smiling.

“It’s been quite alright. Louis and Estelle left for vacation earlier today, so it’ll be just me for the next week. How has training been going?” I ask, taking up my place at the register.

“It’s been going well. We have a pre-season track session in Spain here in a month, so training has gotten tougher,” he answers, “I’ve tried your cupcakes, pain du chocolat, blueberry scones, and croissants. What would you recommend next?”

“Well, we have the choux a la creme or the kouign-amann. I just made fresh batches of both of those,” I think aloud.

“I’ll try one of both of those then!” Max exclaims. I nod and get to work packing them up for him. As I pack them up, he asks me about Bahrain. “So, do you have a hotel for Bahrain yet?”

“I do! I fly in on the Tuesday before the race and then leave on the following Monday. I wanted a few days to explore the city before the race,” I answer. I finish with Max’s order as he nods.

“I fly in on the seventh because we have pre-season testing the weekend before. Hopefully, I’ll get to see you before it all gets hectic for the race,” Max tells me.

“I hope so, too. If not, I’ll be cheering for you from your garage,” I grin.

“You’re right. Well, I’ll see you in Bahrain. Have a good day, Adaline,” Max says, heading for the door.

“See you in Bahrain, Max. Have a good day,” I wave bye.

In the 18th century, Spanish America was firmly established: the conquest phase having been completed, pacification opened the way to a reorganization of the administration of this immense territory. It was necessary to take into account the evolution of the population (since the law of 1514 allowing marriage between Spaniards and Indians, interbreeding was the central axis) and the rapid integration of the Río de la Plata to the south. Furthermore, the rise of the English and French Caribbean islands encouraged Spain to see its own islands as something other than naval relays to the continent.

The real administrative structure was the urban network, which allowed the Spaniards to immediately have control of the territory. Cities were political, administrative and religious centers, defensive sites and points of convergence for commercial and economic activities. They were created at the outlets of rich agricultural lands, most often at altitude to avoid tropical diseases, even if commercial necessities sometimes led to exceptions, as for Lima, built at sea level.

The plan of these new towns followed the same logic: a central square, with the church, the palace of the governor or viceroy, the town hall, seat of municipal power. The checkerboard plan structured the city. According to the Castilian model, the municipal power representing the local elites, the “cabildo”, was elected. Urban power was, throughout the colonial era, a center of passive resistance to distant injunctions from central power. Richly decorated, with public and private buildings of grandiose architecture, Spanish cities were incomparably more luxurious than their British or French counterparts in America. Montreal, Philadelphia or Cap-Français could not compare to the splendors of Bogotá, Caracas and even less so with Havana and Cartagena de Indias.

The FLNC castigates autonomy and continues its fight against “settler colonization”

The text also alludes to Emmanuel Macron's speech last September to the Corsican Assembly. The Head of State had announced his desire to include Corsica in the Constitution, opening the way " to autonomy in the Republic" . He did not then mention the notion of the Corsican people, evoking " an insular, linguistic, historical and cultural community" .[...]

In its press release, the FLNC also placed a large part of its argument in the international context, particularly in relation to the situation in Gaza.

“We support the Palestinian cause. Since our creation and still today,” affirms the clandestine organization which thus recalls some of its fundamentals. Ditto when she insists three times that she has “ no common destiny with France” . Or when she denounces the “ colonizer complex” .[...]

On the third and last page, the clandestine group “recalls the 45 actions of last October” . The organization is probably referring to the blue night of October 8 to 9 when simultaneous attacks were carried out on the island , mainly targeting second homes.

This series - on a scale not seen since December 2012 - was claimed by the FLNC the next day. However, the underground movement had until now not given the total number of these actions, only listed by sector in the press release.

Jet-Skiing through Identity: a deep dive into Mobius M. Mobius (part 1) 🚤

The story started when you said hello.

Our first interaction with this character dates back almost three years now, on the 9th of June 2021. That was when the first episode of the Loki series was released.

So it goes: we see Mobius at the guiding side character, someone to follow in this vast new space the main character is suddenly thrown in. He is a calm, steady figure. However, his serious status as an analyst not cancelling a friendly character. The first ever shot in the series introduces Mobius under the sunlight. The following scenes show him speaking French to a little girl, proving a soothing behavior despite the tight situation they were in.

For someone who works at the TVA, he shows to be quite open minded. He, of course, has a very analytical mind - while still considerating he could think outside the box, whereas other of his colleagues wouldn't accept that a box exists. Even having studied variants, having a focus point is Loki, and knowing the danger it would bring to have to trust one, he still gives this variant a chance. More than that, he takes full responsability for it: when Ravonna says: "If anything goes sideways, it's on you" he responds with a relaxed "Okay".

The first impression Mobius leaves is, therefore, one of a relaxed, almost joyful one.

Although meant to be playful, his response to Loki's threat to "burn this place to the ground" with a flippant "I'll show you my office, you can start there" hints at a potential underlying dissatisfaction with his own situation within the TVA.

But that's not all, and when the easygoing dialogue doesn't work to get under Loki's skin (which couldn't have happened so easily anyway) we get to see where studying variants brought Mobius: to knowing how to manipulate through emotions, using the information at his hands. The only way to get Loki talking was to shatter the illusion he was maintaining, and Mobius knew that. Being able to see this variant for what they truly are proves his smartness, but "lack" of empathy. However, it is more of a block than a lack- for the sake of efficiency- as a consequence of not only working, but living your entire life in the TVA. As a consequence to this, great strenght is also required to keep your true nature instead of just letting it be erased by time and the utter dedication to the time keepers- the only beings allowed to tell right from wrong. Mobius proves that strenght too.

Then, in the second episode of the series, the frame narrows down: from the big scheme to a lower one. Now, a more comfortable theme seems to be growing in the atmosphere between these two characters. We can see Loki sitting with his feet on a desk, magazine in hand, having a small quarrel with Miss Minutes. This is when we find out that Mobius still has more to introduce about himself. There is something that gets him closer to the viewers: having a personal interest with no specific corrrelation with the rest of the story: jet skis.

Going on the first mission of finding the rogue Loki variant (Sylvie, as she is later called) Mobius doesn't let himself be fooled away by Loki's silver tongue, even if in attempt to give him the chance he brought him in for, he almost gets into his play. "You almost had me for a second. My ears are sharp too" Therefore, this character with a first impression of a calm guide and a comic relief isn't to be underestimated. Just because he believes in his cause (collaborating with Loki to fin his variant) it doesn't make him a fool. -> If you have to courage to believe in something impossible, you also have the strength to make it possible.

There is also a soft jelaousy in his character; and seen not only in his attitude towards Loki finding an ally in Sylvie. It's there when talking to Ravonna Renslayer about "other analysts", and the traces left by them in her office.

This might appear as a personal pride, when for Mobius, it is more like a fear: he's afraid of being abandoned or replaced. (Remember the "Who's gonna miss an old analyst with a heart of gold" from season 2?) This internalized feeling therefore translates to the jelaousy we see on screen (or the blocking of emotions once again, but we'll get to that later).

Ravonna's "I know you have a soft spot for broken things" reveales how this character always cared, maybe more than he should have. This desire to help Loki get better (spoiler: he succeeds) is rooted in his own heart, in need of the same care he is giving away. -> Look at you comforting others with the words you wish to hear.

It also grows quickly into something more, that strictly has to do with this variant, a sympathy that is not put into words, but is seen in actions.

He once again proves to be gentle with Loki, despite the latest mission not going the way he was supposed to. He's stubborn, still wanting to go his way even when there are so many others: safer, and that conform to the TVA. He wants to give Loki his daggers back (LOVE IS A DAGGER WHO?!?), clear proof that he is confident in what he is doing. While the potential consequences outweigh his previous actions , Mobius's determination stays the same.

The one unforeseen factor that disrupts his meticulously ordered plan is Loki's escape through the time door after Sylvie bombed the sacred timeline. For the first time, we see Mobius's cool crack, his frantic calls of "Loki!" echoing in vain.

Jade Fact Sheet

(Voted 4th-most-popular-character on the jpn server in a combination of seven different character-ranking surveys held throughout 2021)

Jade is soft-spoken and uses formal speech at all times. An extremely adept vice housewarden, he has a reputation for being a “super secretary”. While unassuming at first glance, Jade is quick to play tricks on others, and he will say he is making an effort to reign in Floyd’s more violent tendencies without actually doing so. Where as Floyd is action above words, Jade is words above actions, and any insults he makes are as biting as they are indirect.

Translation of illustration notes: ”Hm~” (dumbfounded by something bothersome). He has heterochromia and a double eyelid. Eyelid fold is in the shape of the eyes. More gentle than he looks. Doesn’t make very big facial expressions and doesn’t open his mouth very wide. You can see jagged teeth when he opens his mouth, as he is an eel. He is basically always smiling. Eel Form. He is more fish-like than Azul, with proper fins. There are gills on his sides. Eels have stripes, so is body has stripes in places. Since the bottom of the sea is dark, his body is luminescent."

Jade has said he enjoys being around Floyd as “you never know what is going to happen” and expresses concern for Floyd in a classroom voice line, but was also more than happy to temporarily physically restrain Floyd in his eel form and wring him dry of mucus for a moisturizer potion, leaving him unable to walk. From Jade’s own homescreen line, we learn that drying out is fatal to mermaids.

Rook refers to Jade as Monsieur 計画犯 on JPN server, which means “predetermined/deliberate crime” and matches Rook’s nickname for Floyd, Monsieur 愉快犯, which means something close to “joyous crime” (a crime perpetrated out of enjoyment of the commotion that follows). Appropriately, Rook refers to Jade as “Monsieur Prémédité” on ENG-server.

Floyd and Jade are two of several characters that Rook does not have a French-equivalent name for on JPN server.

Jade is seldom bothered and, with a few exceptions, tends to enjoy whatever situation he finds himself in. He is completely unconcerned with how others may think of him. Azul cautions that “Jade is even worse than Floyd, because you can’t tell what he’s thinking”. But this does not stop Azul from using this talent of Jade’s, such as having Jade feign interest in transferring to Pomefiore from Octavinelle, where Jade spent several days as Vil’s personal assistant in order to trick Vil into promoting a product from the Mostro Lounge menu to his 5-million magicam followers.

Jade acquires of pair of shoes by famous designer Ténèbres for Vil (the same brand that Floyd wishes for in the Wish Upon a Star event), explaining that he has “connections” of his own. This leads to Vil becoming brand ambassador for Ténèbres.

While he insists he is a more accomplished flyer than Azul, Jade is, objectively, poor at it, and not particularly motivated to improve.

Much like Floyd, Jade says outright that he is uninterested in money, and that “I just like to have fun”. His disliked food, conger eel, is because “the texture doesn’t suit my palate”.

Jade played the bass as a middle school student, while Azul played the piano and Floyd played the drums, as a trio. Much like Floyd, Jade also expresses discomfort with wearing clothes, saying that they are too tight and “We are not a species with long tails, like ornamental fish”.

He says that, while he likes observing people he does not like to be observed; something he dismisses as normal stage fright.

The only time we have seen Jade rebuke Floyd with any severity was in Book 3, when he sensed Azul was in danger. In a homescreen line, Jade describes Azul as being “easily misunderstood” by those around him.

Jade has, what is described as, an “unusual obsession” with mushrooms. He is the founder and only member of the “Mountain Appreciation Club”, and his club activities seem to consist largely of taking pictures of rocks and gathering mushrooms. Despite his love of mountains and mushrooms, however, Jade tells Kalim that he has heard of “wayward menfolk becoming obsessed with the surface” and he “can’t understand why”.

Jade also seems to have a larger appetite and to eat an unusually large amount of food compared to the other students (ref: Harveston event, birthday). In a PE homescreen line, he explains that this is because he gets "bad mileage".

Jade and Floyd wear a matching set of sturgeon-scale earrings that they won in middle school after winning a fight against the sturgeon in question. Sturgeon scales are popular as good luck charms in the coral sea, as they are known to have been a powerful element used in the spells of the great Sea Witch, one of the Great Seven.

The Sea Witch was the inspiration behind Jade’s hobby of terrarium crafting, as he heard about her penchant for keeping creatures in bottles and wanted to better understand her feelings. He has been keeping things in bottles since he was a small child growing up in the Coral Sea.

When asked what he likes about them, he says he likes being in charge of their upkeep, as “upholding the peacefulness of the worlds inside of bottles is a test of the keeper’s skills. Also, whether it dries out or it lives all depends on me…” But he also enjoys the unpredictability of well-cared for plants suddenly withering without any discernible reason, and unusual plants he cannot recognize suddenly growing from dirt he brought home from the mountains.

When asked if he enjoys unpredictability, he responds “it would be boring if everything went as I expect all of the time”.

According to Jade, their family runs “a very ordinary business, selling a variety of things”. Their mother sends them a message on their birthday, asking them to come home and visit every once in a while, and it seems they are in daily communication with her. Jade explains that she is something of a worrier.

In the Coral Sea the twins would spend their birthday both with relatives and their father’s work friends, receiving “mountains” of presents, many of which were luxury goods that, as children, they had no use for. Jade says that “those kinds of gifts were not truly for us, but to flatter our father…no, to gain his trust, given by people who were desperate for it.

Whenever someone gave a gift with great significance to it, their father would have the gifter sign a certificate stating that it was a gift of good will and that they would never ask for anything in return”. Jade jokes that his father is something of a worrier as well—he calls the twins on their birthday—but his parents are close and get along well.

Floyd explains that “all people do at (the parties he has been to) is stand around and nibble on food. Oh, and maybe say a quick hello.”, implying that they had been fairly formal affairs.

According to a homescreen line, Jade’s parents saw to it that he was taught self-defense as a child. He says, “it still comes in handy, even today”.

We learn that fireworks are also popular in the Coral Sea, which may have been inspired by Disney’s the Little Mermaid. Jade explains that, on nights when fireworks can be seen, it is common for merpeople to swim to the surface of the ocean to watch, as he and Floyd would often do, and people on land would be too distracted to notice them.

Jade’s unique magic is “Shock the Heart” (Japanese: the tooth that takes out a bite), and seems to have more restrictions to it than other unique magics we’ve seen.

A “brain-washing” form of magic similar to Jamil’s, Shock the Heart allows Jade to force someone to speak the truth, but he can never use it on the same person twice. It is less effective both against people who have built up a resistance to magic and unusually cautious people like Azul.

It is very effective against people who don’t keep a guard up, as well as people who are already nervous or upset. It can be preemptively guarded against by a heartfelt promise, such as when Jade fails to get the wholly unguarded Kalim—who should have been a simple target—to reveal the secret of who else had been brainwashing him. We do learn, however, that it is more effective than Jamil’s magic at extracting specific information from a target. Due to these various restrictions, both Jade and Azul are reluctant to share details of Jade’s unique magic with others.

This tweet so excellently demonstrates the types of narratives Israel and Israelis are openly pushing, without remorse or hesitation. It's one of the most overt expressions of a supremacist, racist ideology and too many of these people don't even try to hide, let alone feel ashamed for.

Israelis Keep Hurting Their Own PR Interests By Talking

One problem Israel keeps running into is how the institutionalized dehumanization of Palestinians which keeps the apartheid state operational also causes Israelis to say things that non-Israelis will find extremely shocking, which hurts Israel’s PR interests.

We saw this illustrated in a recent New Yorker interview with Daniella Weiss, a leader of the push to build illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land. Weiss stated frankly and unapologetically that she supports apartheid, that she doesn’t believe Palestinians should have any sovereignty anywhere, that she doesn’t believe Palestinians should have voting rights, that she wants the population of Gaza to be replaced by Israeli settlements, and that she is untroubled by the killing of children in Gaza because she feels it’s being done in the interests of Israeli children.

Asked where the Palestinians in Gaza should go, Weiss replied, “To Sinai, to Egypt, to Turkey.” When the interviewer said the Palestinians are not Egyptian or Turkish, she contended that “The Ukrainians are not French, but when the war started they went to many countries.”

To the question “When you see Palestinian children dying, what’s your emotional reaction as a human being?”, Weiss answered, “I go by a very basic human law of nature. My children are prior to the children of the enemy, period. They are first. My children are first.”

Asked if she believes human rights are not universal and should not apply equally to everyone, Weiss replied “That’s right.”

But perhaps the most revealing statement Weiss made was her entirely truthful explanation of what drives the Israeli push to colonize Palestinian land:

“In Israel, there’s a lot of support for settlements, and this is why there have been right-wing governments for so many years. The world, especially the United States, thinks there is an option for a Palestinian state, and, if we continue to build communities, then we block the option for a Palestinian state. We want to close the option for a Palestinian state, and the world wants to leave the option open. It’s a very simple thing to understand.”

That one paragraph right there will teach you more about the present-day realities of the Israel-Palestine conflict than an entire year of watching CNN. It’s horrid, and it’s jarring to hear it spoken out loud in a favorable way… but it’s true.

This sort of thing has been happening for years. Israelis who’ve been marinating in a self-validating echo chamber of Zionist ideology which dehumanizes Palestinians and normalizes oppression and abuse don’t think twice about saying things that make Israel look bad on the world stage, because to them it’s just the standard status quo way of looking at things.

In 2021 a settler from New York named Yaakov Fauci made headlines around the world with his candid statements to a Palestinian family whose Sheikh Jarrah home he was squatting in.

Fauci, apparently fully aware that he was being filmed, famously replied to the family’s complaints that he was stealing their home by shamelessly telling them, “If I don’t steal it, someone else will steal it.”

And the thing is, he wasn’t lying. He was truthfully describing an abusive dynamic in apartheid Israel where Palestinians are being forced out of their homes in order to control ethnic demographics and advance the agenda outlined above by Daniella Weiss. If he’d been a trained propagandist for the Israeli state he never would have made such comments on camera, but because he was just a Zionism-indocrinated member of the Israeli public he saw no reason to hold his tongue.

Some years ago The Empire Files’ Abby Martin put together a devastating critique of the Zionist ideology just by going around the streets of Jerusalem with a camera and a microphone and talking to Jewish Israelis about their views on Palestinians. Over and over and over again they shared their support for tyranny, murder, genocide and ethnic cleansing in their own words and without hesitation, never thinking that their words could be used to harm Israel’s image, because to them these were just normal things that they said all the time in their day to day life.

You see the same sort of thing when Israelis are filmed sitting in lawn chairs to watch and cheer IDF bombing operations on Palestinian neighborhoods, during which a woman once told the press “I’m just a little bit fascist” after advocating the total destruction of Gaza City.

Every time this happens it sends viral video footage around the internet and does real damage to the world’s perception of Israel. That’s a big part of why Israel is struggling to control the narrative about the Gaza massacre today, which is in turn being exacerbated by more incendiary statements by Israelis, not just from the general public but from within the Israeli government itself.

On Saturday Israeli security cabinet member and Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter casually referred to the violent forced expulsion of Palestinians from the northern half of the Gaza Strip as “Nakba 2023”, a reference to the violent forced expulsion which was inflicted on Palestinians at the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948.

Haaretz reports:

Israeli security cabinet member and Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter (Likud) was asked in a news interview on Saturday whether the images of northern Gaza Strip residents evacuating south on the IDF’s orders are comparable to images of the Nakba. He replied: “We are now rolling out the Gaza Nakba. From an operational point of view, there is no way to wage a war — as the IDF seeks to do in Gaza — with masses between the tanks and the soldiers.”

When asked again whether this was the “Gaza Nakba”, Dichter — a member of the security cabinet and former Shin Bet director — said “Gaza Nakba 2023. That’s how it’ll end.”

When later asked if this means Gaza City residents won’t be allowed to return, he replied: “I don’t know how it’ll end up happening since Gaza City is one-third of the Strip — half the land’s population but a third of the territory.”

Dichter’s comments are surprising not only because Israel has been publicly framing the mass displacement in Gaza as a measure taken solely to protect civilians, but also because the Israeli government has long officially denied that the Nakba ever happened, even passing laws forbidding its history to be taught in schools.

Even as western officials hasten to frame Israel’s actions as a defensive and measured response to the Hamas attack on October 7, Israeli officials have been falling all over themselves in a mad rush to make those western officials look like liars.

When talking about the Gaza assault Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made headlines by invoking the biblical nation of Amalek, whose people God instructed the Israelites to commit total genocide against. The first book of Samuel contains the instructions, “Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.”

President Isaac Herzog insinuated last month that all civilians in Gaza are legitimate military targets because they failed to overthrow Hamas, saying, “It is not true this rhetoric about civilians not being aware, not involved. It’s absolutely not true. They could have risen up. They could have fought against that evil regime which took over Gaza in a coup d’etat.”

When announcing the total siege on Gaza which would see the enclave cut off from electricity, food, water and fuel, Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant stated that “we are fighting human animals, and we are acting accordingly.”

IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said Israel would turn Gaza into a “city of tents” and that Israel’s “emphasis is on damage and not on accuracy” in its bombing campaign.

Dan Gillerman, Israel’s former ambassador to the UN, said last month that “I am very puzzled by the constant concern which the world is showing for the Palestinian people and is actually showing for these horrible, inhuman animals who have done the worst atrocities that this century has seen.”

“Hamas became ISIS and the citizens of Gaza are celebrating instead of being horrified,” The Economist cites an Israeli general saying last month. “Human beasts are dealt with accordingly.”

“Creating a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a necessary means to achieve the goal,” a major general named Giora Eiland wrote in an Israeli newspaper, adding, “Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist.”

Israel’s allies keep trying to portray it as a rational actor and a positive force in the world, but if you listen to Israelis themselves you get a very different understanding of what this murderous apartheid state is actually about.

As Maya Angelou said, when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

But then you hear Israeli officials deny that there even is a humanitarian crisis, live on US and UK television, multiple times. This is all planned and with intent, and such intent, in my opinion, meets the criteria of intent for a genocide or at the very least ethnic cleansing. Those are crimes against humanity.
