A rant about roleplaying and taking advice from goblin eratta

Look, look, I get it. D&D is famous for its goblins and whatnot. But trust me when I say, pathfinder goblins are so much better art wise and writing wise than D&D's.

For example:

This is the D&D monster manual illustration for goblins.

Firstly, orange, chunky, this guy's has the aura of "might attempt tactics" about him. He looks more like he'd try and throttle you rather than run in fear at the sight of a large sword. The head is oddly shaped as a goblin's head should be, but it looks more lumpy warrior face than gobliny. The armor is far too organized. The ears are droopy and smooth. This is not goblin, this is a small ork at best.

Yeah they've got a brief section explaining the hobgoblins and bugbear relations, a little bit about goblin language, but not much as far as flavor text.

Now pathfinder goblins...

These are the quintessential goblin.

Green, scrawny, cowardly, chaotic, looks like they scrounge their clothes from local landfills, oblong football head, big ol' perky pointy goblin ears; *chefs kiss* perfection.

Pair that with the tidbits of goblin lore from pathfinder and ough you've got something good going on.

They are afraid of and have a burning hatred for horses. They typically wield 'horse choppers,' basically big cleavers or axes, instead of daggers or shortswords like in D&D.

One of the few occasions they'll organize and come up with plans is if they're pulling pranks or massive attacks under the command of a warlord or leader, of which they will occasionally get on accident.

They don't have to be bound to a leader, though, sometimes goblin bands can manage just with cooperation alone.

Goblins are crafty little buggers, laying traps and building ramshackle contraptions to get the jump on their foes. They prefer going for sneak attacks or surprise attacks over head on combat. They know they can't win a fair fight, so they fight unfair.

If you invade a goblin dwelling, they'll usually retreat on sight, but not always because of cowardice. Sometimes, they do so to lead you into their traps or to get you into a bottleneck. They can come up with strategies, but usually only if it's below the belt and breaks all the rules of engagement.

War crimes and chaos, if they aren't committing one of the two, they must be defective goblins.

There are occasions in the pathfinder modules where it encourages the DM to have the goblins get into antics over attacking the players. One such example is during a fight at a festival, it reccomends having some of the goblins focus on the festival food over the potential threat of the player characters, since they'd find the food much more important.

Some I came up with include swinging from ropes and attempting to grab players' hats, hoods or helmets, having some attempt to crawl into the clothes of the players instead of attacking, or even just crawling and wallowing all over them like opossum babies. My personal favorite and what got a huge laugh out of my players was having one find a big cast-iron stew pot and putting it on its head. It made it blind, but it also gave it more armor, making it sort of run at the characters to attack but not being able to hit them because it couldnt see, and the swords and maces bouncing off the pot due to the additional armor made it difficult to kill him. Pair that with the constant deafening the goblin would endure with the "bong" sounds any impacts would make, causing it to panic and run around more, bumping into walls and people alike.

What I love about these little tidbits of fight modifications is that it exemplifies the "combat doesn't mean roleplaying is over" factor many players and DM's either have never considered or just miss entirely. Many people complained that "man, if only combat in D&D was like the movie," and to that, I say: it can be, if you stopped being boring and made it that way! Describe what your character does! Add flavor to it! An action is 6 seconds. You can do so much in six seconds while still attacking! Describe the actions you take! Take free actions to do little flairs or flourishes! Show off! Fight with elegance, fight with brutality, fight with conniving, fight with confidence! Spend an action doing something in character instead of attacking! Yes, it's not efficient, but it's more interesting and entertaining to take a fall for a storytelling moment instead of spending yet another turn attacking. Flawed moments are far more interesting than constant perfection, that's why you use dice instead of always having a nat20 every turn. Use the failures to your advantage, show how your character reacts to a bad situation or rough luck!

Don't just spend the time in between your turns waiting for yours to roll around. Instead, be planning the sick ass thing you'll do if the dice allow you to, or the reaction to the adversity if they don't! And, sometimes, break away from the "I swing my sword, I cast a spell, I eldritch blast" combat! Push enemies off of elevations with the push action! Flip a table over to get cover from spells and ranged attacks!Grapple them to make it easier for your team mates to hit them or use them as a human shield! Grab a big rock off the ground and chuck it at someone! Cast a spell that doesn't just do damage!

Broke:

"You shoot a fireball at the thief as he attempts to escape."

Woke:

"As the the thief runs, I go to launch the fireball at him, but notice the mirror to the left of me. My narcisim gets the better of me, and I end up taking a second to check my hair. Ah yes, dashing. Oh, wait, I was doing something. I manage to tear myself away from the mirror long enough to barely catch the thief in my fireball as he attempts to flee."

So, I say all that to say this: players and Dms alike, roleplay during combat! It's a roleplaying game, not a roleplaying game+formulaic tabletop war game any time there's combat. And hey, if you ever find yourself needing inspiration on how to make fights more interesting in your tabletop games, grab a couple low level modules off Paizo, and read up on Pathfinder goblin scenes, they pay extreme dividends.

hi! i think you've answered this question before when a different anon asked, but i couldn't find the original post, so sorry for the repeat; but how do you recommend non-native people write native characters while being respectful of their tradition and culture? i understand that there is a variety of different indigenous cultures all across america and other parts of the world, but do you have any links or sources that you could recommend to further familiarise with the general gist of respecting boundaries before diving into individual peoples and whatnot? thanks so much for the help, and i'm sorry if i worded any part of this ask; this is a genuine question, and i don't mean any offence!

I’d be happy to provide some help. See below:

Here is my previous post regarding this topic; it has the basics for how to tackle a Native character when you are a non-Native. Feel free to read through it. Additionally, I’ll offer some more personal advice.

Three of my main OCs (SilentDove, Balenyra, and Gene) are Plains Cree, Chippewa, and Okanagan. To narrow it down:

SilentDove and Gene (siblings): Chippewa-Cree & Lipan Apache

Balenyra Red Rivers: Plains Cree & Okanagan.

Now, the Cree and Okanagan people are predominately Indigenous Canadian (aside from the Chippewa-Cree that reside on the Rocky Boy reservation). Given that I do not belong to any of those cultures, I've needed to do extensive research on cultural customs and beliefs. After all, they might do something different that we Diné/Nde do not.

To do such, I've actually taken to surrounding myself with people belonging to these Nations (e.g., on different social media platforms). For instance, here is a post that explains what a Cree bride would've worn in the 1800s; this was posted by someone who is Plains Cree.

Furthermore, here is an excerpt I’ve included in my Notion, an app that I’ve used to build my OCs:

If you wish to conduct your own research, I highly recommend websites, books, journal articles, and other references published by Indigenous people, preferably belonging to the tribe/band you wish to include in your writing.

For example, your character is a Cree person. Are they Plains? Woodlands? Swampy? Moose? If you are writing about an Apache woman, does she belong to the San Carlos tribe? Is she Lipan Apache or Jiscarilla? ? Specify! Too often have non-Natives grouped us underneath the same umbrella — refusing to expand our identity, leaving us as only "Native American/Indigenous."

An Update on Everything

Hello! It's me, Aster, who's basically unfortunately not doing really well on the financial side right now. To give an update on the water dispenser thing, I decided to just buy the important filters first since that's basically the important stuff in making sure that the water's going up and then make up for the other stuff with well... Credit card.

Thanks to you guys however, it's not that much! It's not as heavy as it could have been than if you guys hadn't given me some help! Which... Thank you!

However, that's not really the end of our troubles right now. See, my grandmother lives with me and well... We DO have a budget every month but lately, my grandmother's state has been... Deteriorating. Her dementia's been getting worse so her control over her body is also getting worse.

She has her own pension and whatnot but that's already immediately used up for her medicines (and it's not even an entire month's worth of medicine...). So it's also been digging into our budget which... Isn't that much every month anyway.

My job's more of a project based sort of job but I do get some money from there. It's good enough for ME but it's not good enough to keep my grandmother comfortable.

So as much as I hate keep asking you guys for help, any dollar that you guys give goes a long way in easing the financial difficulties we're experiencing right now.

relating to that vent, i getchu so bad. i feel like in general, the internet might worsen compulsions & obsession within ocd + etc. i have a similar feeling (wouldnt say identical cause i know u from tumblr n yaknow yaknow) that tells me everything i do needs to be 100% morally correct or [insert awful things] will happen to me or someone i love. and this is easier to deal with when you're offline, because there's a limit on the people that can get mad at you. half of the world won't get mad at you because only 0.00001% (or whatever) of the world knows you, yaknow. on the net, it feels like everyone who has an account knows you. your brain telly you anyone who has an account on here might see what you posted & they might be mad at you & they might make a callout post or whatever. even though they don't know you. which is a terrifying thought for many. i dont think youre alone in this, genuinely. and i feel it can be improved. some stuff that's helped me: - making separate accounts w private stuff (doesnt rly work on tumblr but like a private account on insta & etc etc) - rationalising thoughts (an example of this would be thinking: is it really likely many people will agree with someone being mad at me? or: how many people actually do see my posts? is that proportional to the amount of followers i have) - and talking ab it w friends. genuinely, the communication + processing of these thoughts & feelings is soo helpful. sending u soo much love <3 if u wanna chat a bit ab it you can dm me :) (ask can be published or responded 2 privately, whatever u prefer!)

This is just a small, general reminder (that I also put in my FAQ), but if you specifically want to block me from being able to see your blog and whatnot, you need to block this blog AND my main account @strawberry-scum .

Tumblr has made it to where there are more hints I can gather if someone has blocked my writing blog but not my main, but blocking my main will prevent accidental interactions through ways of replies/likes. The only main hint I get now is if I go to DM from this blog, or try to reblog something to this blog.

If you notice there are key themes I keep talking about (more recently, the pee related kinks as an example), or you notice I write themes you do not enjoy (pegging, the recent gil the creep fic, etc) *please* feel free to block me for your own comfort.

I don't think it stops me from popping up in tags when *you* search general tags, but you can also plop my writing blog url into tumblr's filter options in your settings and that should, at the very least, give you a warning that the post contains 'filtered words' and you have to manually click to view the post.

#i dont recommend my main blog because I will complain about writing MORE there #and sometimes I reblog horror related stuff #ironically I consume more horror and thrillers more than smut

Do you have any advice on how to get attention to your fics on tumblr? Thanks so much in advance!

I'll be honest, I feel like I'm fairly new to tumblr myself. I've been posting for nearly a year and very much still trying to figure out how it all works, plus imposter syndrome, so I in no way feel very qualified to be giving any advice, but...... These are all of the tips I can think of right now that I feel had a hand in growing my fic interactions.

1. Tags. Tags are very important, tag your fics with as many tags as possible, whilst still making sure that all the tags you use are relevant to what your fic is about (we don't want to clog up random ass tags with stuff that isn't related to that thing). If you use a tag that someone out there is following, there's a chance that your fic could show up on their home page.

2. Don't be deterred if your fics aren't getting a large amount of attention immediately after posting them. Sometimes it takes time for your work to reach peoples feed, for example, my most popular fic might have a high amount of notes currently, but it took over 3 months to get to that point. Patience, quite sadly, is key.

3. Write what you want to read. I know every writer says this, but it's true. I've written a lot of stuff because I thought other people would like it, even if it wasn't really where my head was at at the time, and these fics always did worse compared to when I wrote something that I genuinely wanted to write and enjoyed writing. Remember to write for yourself.

4. Descriptions. I never used to write descriptions for my fics, until I realised that usually if I'm looking for something to read, I tend to skip over fics that don't have descriptions because I either might be looking for something specific, or my attention span is far to short to start reading something I possibly might not like. It doesn't have to be too snazzy, just a fairly simple, enticing description that'll make people want to keep reading.

5. If you don't have one, make a masterlist. If someone likes one of your fics and want to read more, they'll struggle to find them if you don't have a masterlist either in your bio, or as a pinned post.

And that's all I have right now, it is 1am so my brain is partially asleep. I hope that some of my tips might help you but my inbox or dms are always open for any questions or whatnot.

art as one of the younger kids on sfw enhablr (i’m assuming you’re around 05’ - 08’) how do you feel abt the current content for the maknae line? like ik it’s not always super sexualized or anything but sometimes i see stuff that’s just the way it’s worded really rubs me the wrong way ☹️ esp bc some of the kids on here like you are so young it makes me feel like if they see stuff like that , they might start think it’s okay for others to treat them the same or vice verse … whenever i see edits of niki on tiktok , i have to avoid the comments bc there’s almost always like a “daddy” , “how is he 16” or “you don’t know what you do to me” like wtf he’s a literal child ?? it makes me so mad and honestly so uncomfortable :( and i saw an article on kboo today too that said niki apparently has around 200 explicit or mature fics written abt him on ao3 … sometimes even the fboi trope (usually when it’s written abt minors) bothers me bc i see minors writing abt it (like 13-15 y/o) and i don’t understand why they don’t just use the term player or smtg … bc they’ll go out of their way to mention how the character has sex a lot an whatnot , even that feels way too suggestive for me personally for a minor too write let aline abt a minor too , sorry for the rant,, i was just wondering how you felt … omg also though tbh i noticed that some of the minors on here / blogs in gen seem way too comfy on here like they’ll be sharing where they live , their actual names and sometimes like giving a lot of personal info … like did they not learn abt internet safety or do they just no care? as one of the older kids , i kind of worry abt them :( i really hope everybody stays safe on here <3 & some reminders: never be afraid to block anyone ! bc i’ve seen a lot of minors on here get sent stuff from the p*rn bots or just weird dms :( & u don’t need to force yourself to interact with someone , make sure ur comfy with them first !

hi anon!! firstly you're correct, i am in between 05 & 08, but as someone with basic common sense this rubs me the wrong way so much. back when i was a bigger anime fan, especially from 2020 going forword, i noticed alot of younger kids on apps like tiktok or w@ttp@d not only writing things about adults(like rengoku, toji, gojo, levi) but also minors (bakugo, itadori, megumi) and nobody really said anything? as far as tiktok, i used to see alot of younger anime fans talking about getting railed by thesw characters and so on so forth, and again, most werent talking about it, and if they did they would get attacked. and now, im seeing the same thing happening with younger idols, especially enhypen's maknae line and its so wrong.

number one, there is a difference between sexualizing and sex shaming. alot of the time when these kids get called out there respond is "lets not act like teens dont have sex" and this a response that makes no sense. regardless of whether they do or dont, as a minor you shouldnt be talking about it, especially because it puts you at risks for older people in general to pret on you. this doesnt mean i think we shouldn't educate teens on sex and etc, but talking about railing someone you dont know, older then you or not, is both dehumanizing and just disgusting. there is no way or response to justify sexualizing a minor.

the current content for the enha maknae is 50/50. alot of times ill see people writing scenarios like yandere enha and they include the maknae line and it doesnt feel right. the fboy troupe feels wrong but i see it so much for them and its like 😐😐 why are talking about how a MINOR gets around? or when they age them up purrply to do that but its not sexual😐even with smaus and series, alot if the ways things are put do not feel right. for example, using someone older then the love interest for a faceclaim? especially when the person is a minor, it doesnt feel right. even if its not your intention really think about that shit for a moment. this is a callout woth me naming names cuz this isnt shade or nothing but its basic critical thinking

i have seen the article kboo did, and its just disgusting that the article had to be made. society today is so focused on setting us back and its not setting up these kids for the future. as for the GROWN ASS ADULTS out there writing these fics about the maknaes...... get some help. that is a MINOR and you are a predator.

and youre right, alot of the younger blogs on enhablr are too okay with sharing social medias and info about them and its both shocking and worrying. even things like revealing your age seems unnecessary to me if you're a minir, especially because majority f the time these predators are waiting on that, looking for younger kids. at one point i did have my age in my pinned post and i took it down. at the wnd of the day i am a minor and thats all that is needed to be said. and a response i hear alot to going out of your way to protect yourself is "but why do i have to do this? people should know better." people should also know not to sexualize minors, but they dont. so yeah, dont give out your personal info, what you look like, social medias, etc, and if you do, be careful about that shit.

so heres the bottom line: ni-ki is 16. jungwon is 18. wonyoung is 17. leeseo is 14. eunchae is 15. jongseob is 16. bahiyyih is 17. sunoo just turned 19. all of them are minors minus sunoo, but yall were writing smut or "suggestive" stuff for sunoo before that. stop it. whether you are grown as hell or fresh off the tit yall need to have BASIC COMMON SENSE and realize that shit is fucked up.

and whats worse is thise same 'fans' go and sexualize everything, to the point where you could be 20 and bias and stan an idol whos 19 and you'll be called a predator. get it together, cuz truly, im sick of having this conversation, and ill start beating the color off/into yall if we keep coming back to this.

So, today, I am taking a page out of @reggiemantleholdmyhand-tle’s book and wanted to ask you guys if you want to create a small recurring character for my original story “Where the Fairies Go” - a brief summary for those not familiar with it: A young woman who moved to a small-town college from the city and befriends her outcast roommate goes missing after a wild frat party. Her new best friend can’t remember anything about the night before and upon looking further into the disappearence, both her and the local law inforcment are met with a wall of lawyers and secrets from other students.

What I need are a bunch of background characters like for example students, cheerleaders, footballers, frat boys, sorrority girls, teachers, law inforcment and the likes.

What is a part of your creative process that you think nobody would expect?

Sorry I let this sit for a bit! I really had to reflect on just what my creative process truly is. I don't want to say I have a routine, but maybe that's because I don't think about it. Anyway, while it might not be "unexpected", here's a little insight as to what my creative process looks like - in no particular order.

(Under the cut because I went overboard)

💜 A loose map of whatever story I want to tell. Typically this consists of bullet points with really vague or random notes of things I want to add to x story. Some of the bullets may be expanded upon and some may be tossed away. For bigger fics I always like to start here so I at least have a beginning and end to whatever I'm planning. (Example below - I delete bullet points after I’ve gone through them usually)

💜 ORGANIZATION. All of my fics have to be organized. I can’t have a ton of shit roaming around my google drive or I get frustrated. Aka, every fic as their own folder, color and all of their contents are within said folder.

💜 Caffeine. I ALWAYS need some sort of caffeine before and while I am writing. Maybe it helps the braincell, maybe it's just a comforting thing for me in general, but it's a must.

💜 Yelling (affectionately) at interested friends about whatever story I want to tell! I get stuck as any writer does. I have a small group of friends whom I can either DM or plug away in a group chat to help hash out details that maybe have me at a loss. It's probably the most important part of my creative process, as an idea I may have may not be as great as a suggestion someone else has. This works the same as the bullet points, some are used and some aren't, but just having enablers to share your ideas with helps immensely.

💜 Music, or some form of background noise. I cannot write in silence. It's awkward to me. I have playlists on top of playlists for this. I make playlists for each fic I intend to write! It helps me get in the mood for that particular scenario. Other times I play instrumentals from OSTs and whatnot. So long as there is something in the background that I can tune out, but still have as comfort, I can write. (many...many playlists, what’s below doesn’t cover it all)

💜 I always reread the previous chapter(s) of whatever fic I'm working on if I've set it down for a time. This either sparks new ideas to me or just gives me a refresher on what I've shelved for a hot second.

💜 Car rides are absolutely my best fic planning moments. My drives to and from work give me a little bit of time to just think about whatever it is I'm working on. I've mentioned this a few times to some of my friends that "commutes are where my best ideas come from" and it's factual. 10/10 can confirm. Any great idea in a fic you've read of mine, I probably thought of on my way to of from work.

💜 I write the whole oneshot or chapter and THEN reread, revise and edit. If I edit as I go, it becomes a whole big mess. Better to just jot down everything until I feel it's come to an end, and then go back and fix any errors or change the phrasing or a scene.

💜💜💜 My creative process is pretty bland in comparison to others, I wager, but these here are the important things that matter to me and help me write!

1. I know basically nothing about perfume or how to describe smells. that said, I will always like the smell of lavender, plants after rainfall, and the ocean (extremely basic of me i know).

2. I love the bacchae (by euripides). it’s so fucked up and violent. I like when signy in the volsunga saga was an absolute savage and a girlboss. I like fairytales about tricksters who survive by their wits, like the one about the tailor who deceives giants (“seven in one blow”). I like how many stories there are about a rabbit in the moon and why it’s there. i love pretty much any story about sir gawain. baba yaga's pretty dope. the golem of prague of course. and uhhh.... i'm sure there are others that just aren't coming to mind rn, but that's all i can think of off the top of my head.

3. i’m obsessed with metatextuality. i can make anything meta just watch me. in that same vein, I love stories about the transformative power of stories (for good and bad), and people who use stories as a tool for survival (great example of this is in the breadwinner, also 1001 nights). I love sparagmos (if that wasn’t clear from my previous answer). I love the power of the collective over the individual (again, for good and bad). i love doors/portals/liminal spaces. i love parallel universes/interdimensional travel/the multiverse. i love fraught relationships between mothers and daughters. i love when there is a sassy little talking black cat. i love cycles and rings and i love entropy and the absurd. i love when a character is really suicidal but they know they can't die because their loved ones need them and that gives them a larger purpose. i love the angel in the house trope, against my better judgment (sorry miss woolf). and above all, i love a really cool grandma.

4. woah.... three characters.... that’s hard... I think emily from the will arbery play heroes of the fourth turning is probably the character who has resonated with me most in recent memory (saw it in 2019). also obligated to give a shoutout to daria from daria who got me through middle school like wow she is literally me. wirt from over the garden wall resonated a lot with me back in 2014 and he still does. lear’s fool of course. both beth and jo march from little women. okay that’s more than three. I’ll stop now

5. it really depends on what im reading and how. I don’t like writing on physical copies of books, but I read a lot on my phone too and annotate them there. sometimes on physical copies I’ll take note of a certain page and then write some notes on my phone, or stick post it notes on the pages depending on what my purpose with the text is. it also just depends on my mood, how invested in a certain text I am, etc. I don’t have any sort of regimented reading habits, I just read...

I can give you some of my thoughts on that - although obviously if you want to do a Leverage AU, you can do whatever you want, there can be multiple options, none is worse than the other. My ideas with some explanations for those who haven’t watched Leverage (no spoilers, only the premise) are under the cut!

quick explanation for those unfamiliar with Leverage: it’s a TV Show about a team of criminals that con bad rich people in order to bring justice to poor people/return their money. the team has five characters with five different criminal occupations: a grifter, a hitter, a hacker, a thief and a mastermind (not really a criminal occupation, but the guy that plans stuff and holds the team together). (if some of these words are new to you, I advise you to google them - I know that I had to google them when I started getting into the show, nothing bad about it, we all have a different vocabulary range).

so our task here is to pick some X-Men characters for the roles. iwillshipyouman suggested: Charles as the mastermind, Erik as the grifter or as the grifter and the hitter at the same time. +possibly Raven as the grifter/the thief and Hank as the hacker. now come my ideas.

I have to say that my experience with the Leverage AU for another fandom (BBC Musketeers 2014-16) and specifically some awesome people from the corresponding discord server have taught me that it’s more fun to choose some not extremely obvious roles for characters because this lets more of their sides shine. I also have a personal preference for Cherik to have a first meeting after the start of the story so here’s my random list of characters with justifications. I give everyone they/them pronouns ‘cause I dunno what pronouns they’ll have in the story.

Dear anyone who stumbles upon this post, feel free to use my ideas, but please send me the link so that I could read it and tell everyone about it :) If you want to brainstorm this together, do reach out via asks/notes/DMs/whatnot.

Erik - the mastermind. They have their metal powers to defend themselves but that’s not their main thing. Angel - the grifter. They also have their powers to defend themselves. Raven - the hitter (that’s basically canon, see: beginning of DOFP, for example). Aaaand, totally random: I wanted to have Kitty on the team and with Kitty comes Ilyana, so, Kitty as the hacker and Ilyana as the thief? Maybe?

You can notice that Charles is not on the team. Well, the idea in my head is sth like Charles is Raven’s sibling and the team accidentally stumbles upon them during a job. Raven’s main line is “Stop flirting with our team leader”, and Erik will be crushing like Erik because, well, I love that trope. Will there be Raven/Kitty? Kitty/Ilyana? Raven/Angel? Very possible. Polycules are our everything.

I might write this at some point but I give zero promises, a promise-free zone
