The painting was executed in 1835, as it is remembered as a recently completed work in a letter from Francesco Gonin to the artist dated 1 January, 1836. The subject is taken from canto XXIII of Orlando Furioso. D'Azeglio's predilection for Ariosto is clearly expressed in Ricordi, chapter VII, dealing with early readings of the classics: "I preferred Dante and Ariosto to everyone, and still today I prefer them". The relationship between literature and painting is a typical trait of Azeglian work, but it is all the more present in these Milanese years which coincide with the writing of the novel Ettore Fieramosca with the attendance of Manzoni and Grossi, with the resounding success of his landscapes animated by historical and romantic scenes. The painting was exhibited in Brera in 1837, where numerous paintings by d'Azeglio were presented, including three of Ariosto's subjects. In the work the interest in the landscape (mountainous and wild, just lightened by a grazing light) is preponderant; the winged figure, pointing downwards, suggests depths and hollows between the first and second floors.

Always love how much folklore especially creature folklore emphasizes that there is a way for you to win. These are the steps to ensure the dead don't rise: take them out through a hole in the wall and give them iron shoes. Vampires cannot abide sunlight.
