the fatherhood theory:
my take on lip gallagher finding purpose in parenthood.
Tumblr media
First things first, I quickly want to congratulate the writers for beautifully articulating the accuracy of Lip's initial reaction to Freddy's birth.
Tami had an extremely complicated birth that resulted in her requiring surgery. Lip, both as a new father and as a boyfriend, was legitimately terrified. He couldn't decide if he should stay with Tami or their son. His thought process probably included the possibility of the mother of his child suffering, further trailing to the fear of fatherly absence. Naturally, considering Lip's lack of a genuine father figure, contributing anything remotely resembling neglect or failure to accommodate to his son feels like the worst and most unforgivable thing he could ever do.
Secondly, I want to say that although Tami is quite different compared to Lip's other love interests, I think she was relatively realistic at the time. She has drive and compassion, and Lip loves a good sarcastic girl who affectionately ridicules the guy she loves. She's abrasive in a way that is more meant to establish her intelligence rather than actually put others around her down. Tami is also terrible at accepting criticism, but doesn't respond in the explosive anger that Lip does. She's more passive aggressive than, well...aggressive aggressive. Even though it's not quite the healthiest, it's much more flexible than rage.
In short, Lip sees a lot of himself in Tami. But, she's a more put together, determined version of him. She's the star that Lip never really turned out to be, even if she's not absolutely perfect. Their relationship is accurate for the conditions of the show (and Lip's life.) Tami doesn't give Lip a lot of opportunities to self sabotage because she's pretty much dubbed herself the lead of their relationship.
(not ignoring the fact that she said he'd be a shitty father by the way. that crushed my soul and i'll never forgive her but that's besides the point.)
Having to decide to let professionals (doctors and nurses, who he notoriously does not trust (rooted by capitalistic healthcare environments and the need for independence due to his childhood trauma), try their best to help Tami when she was literally blue and unresponsive, was difficult and extremely scary.
However, once Freddy has been properly cleaned and prepared to be held by his father, Lip suddenly finds the answer to so many of his interpersonal questions.
"I seem to have ruined everything I was once good at. Is there anything I won't automatically ruin just because I don't think I deserve it?"
Fatherhood.
"Would I be any better at this than my parents were?"
Yes, with practice.
"Would I be able to break the cycle?"
Yes, with love.
"Is it necessary for me to feel so deeply about the world?
Yes. Even if it's painful.
"And was it ever worth hiding that with anger?"
To some extent, yes. You wanted to protect yourself.
"Am I, deep down, past my inevitable quickness to rage, a good person?"
Yes. You always have been.
In hindsight, his excitement for becoming a dad seems kind of obvious considering his overjoyed and emotional reaction. But I think we can dig deeper beyond this surface level impression. Even if it's genuine and ultimately very good at showing Lip's love for his son. Something that I think really prepared Lip for the complications of parenthood was the time period during his time as a college student taking care of Liam.
He'd been surrounded by family members for his entire life that he did not trust. When Fiona, his beacon of support throughout his whole childhoo despite their complicated sibling relationship, made such a grave mistake that reflected neglect, Lip felt unsafe. Both Frank and Monica were typical offenders of drug and alcohol abuse. And they regularly dabbled in allowing these substance issues to affect their children.
Now there was really nobody in his family he could trust. Lip would have to re-learn how to fend for himself and his family. He's had plenty of experience, but he had a support system. Even if it contained his own siblings who lived the same abusive life as he did. But now that he didn't trust anyone around Liam, he literally had to become his primary caregiver.
"You're the closest thing to a dad we've ever had," said Ian Gallagher.
Becoming Freddy's father was the love that Lip needed in his life. Girlfriends are replaceable. Lip has proven this. But he always believed that once you become a father, you do not have the right to back out. And he'd always hold himself to that standard.
This is your life now. Do it right, or go to hell.
People like Lip need to have people in their lives who unconditionally rely on them. His siblings have chosen many times (and rightfully of course) to handle personal matters without Lip's advice. He hasn't gotten to feel as needed or as important as he deserved to be. Having a child, though unexpected, was the missing piece to the endless puzzle that was his life's purpose.
Lip's desire to be a good father not only stemmed from the failure of his own parents, but the fact that guiding his siblings through life was the one thing that everyone around him that everyone was convinced he couldn't do better than anyone else. (Personally, I think Fiona did a great job as an older sister. I'm more speaking from the perspectives and opinions of his siblings.)
Lip will feel love for himself through Teddy. Once he can finally succeed for the long term, he will find peace.
Not to say that he's automatically perfect, because he's not (and no one else is), but he's ready to take on the challange.
Freddy is the love of Lip's life.
And he always will be.

Cannot take my mind off southern! Waynes. Thomas has huge “Texas mom” vibes and I can’t explain it. I just KNOW he was a work dad if that makes sense.
I wanna hear about Thomas Wayne who’d have indents around his mouth from long nights at the hospital, who always reeked of blood but smiled like sunshine spilling on his teeth, who came to work meetings in his scrubs because he didn’t have time to change.
GIVE ME THOMAS WAYNE WHO BABIED HIS EMPLOYEES!
“My god, darlin’, I reckon you didn’t take that break we discussed! Now, I know you wanna show off to them high-heel folk, but you better go and fix yourself a snack and a nap, alright?”
“You’re still supposed to be with the juniors, mentoring don’t end for another month! Your team leader assigned you this? Aw, sugar plum, course it ain’t your fault, lemme handle it, all right?”
He’s stop meetings just to be like, “Hold your horses ya’ll, the boss is calling,” and it’s just Martha or Alfred. I know for a fact he loved bringing Bruce around the office and hospital, too.

i've been thinking sm about how lip wanted to be a dad so bad and how it would be soooo different if he had a girl who treated him right and was loyal and sweet
“emmie girl, are you excited to see daddy?”
your daughter squeals and babbles, “dad-dy!” her little hands waving in the air, one grasping onto your chin. you look around the commons, sighting a familiar head of messy curls and heading over to him.
“who’s that, hm?” you ask little emily, pointing out her daddy where he sits at a table outside the student center. as you get closer your daughter recognizes lip, squealing and squirming to be put down so she can run to him. you smile.
“go get ‘im emmie,” you murmur, pressing a quick kiss to the crown of her head before placing her steady little feet on the ground. she toddles over with adorable determination, shrieking in excitement until lip’s head is turning at the commotion. his jaw drops slightly and his eyes light up, flitting from his baby girl up to you, then back down.
"da- da-ddy!" emily stumbles on her path but lip catches her easily, lifting her up and spinning her around.
"what's up eminem! how's my girl, huh? didya miss me?" he smothers her little face with sweet kisses, listening to the sounds of her baby giggles. the two of them are so sweet, lip and his baby girl. he loves her so much. you know how much he misses his sweet emily- and you too- when he's away at school.
"look!" emily points with one pudgy finger at the bandaid on her knee. "kitty!"
"aw, y'scraped it sweets?" he asks, ever attentive. emily nods her head, grabbing onto his curls. "lemme kiss it better." he flips emily on her tummy, holding her secure and high above his head. he blows a raspberry on the squish of her knee, them smothers her with sugars.
"ducky ducky!" emily points at you, holding her little stuffed duck. it was a present from her daddy, and she never went anywhere without it.
"yeah? y'want ducky?"
you smile, coming to his side and placing ducky in her waiting hands. lip hikes emily up on his hip, kissing her, then ducky on the head. one strong arm wraps around your waist, pulling you in to press one final, sweet kiss to your temple.
"thank you baby. jus' what i needed, time with my girls.
end.

Anything with lip Gallagher and your four babies on Christmas morning pls I’m so soft thinking about them
lip has been chain smoking in the garage all night putting their toys together. he thought boy toys were hard to put together until he had amelia and had to put a dream house together.
at least he has cookies he gets to eat.
"leave one, lip." you whisper. "take a bite out of it so they know santa took a bite."
he's rolling his eyes, but does bc he'd rather die than have that christmas magic ruined like frank and monica did. when santa came, and it was rare, it was clear it was frank. he would give it to monica that she at least tried.
on christmas morning, lip's slept a total of three hours but he's woken up by excited screeches, jumping on the bed.
you and him are drinking coffee, letting jude pass out all the presents. he always grins when one extra is in your lap, one you didn't know about. you give him a look and he shrugs.
"we said no gifts, phillip."
"c'mon," lip snorts, shaking his head lightly. "just be polite and say thank you."
you give him a soft smile, opening whatever it is this year- a small necklace with four birth stones on it that has you emotional.

more college dad lip thoughts….lip coming home one weekend as a surprise and the reader is busy doing something (cleaning or working at home whatever) and his baby girl notices him first and is like DADDY IS HOME KACJOSCJ!!!!!
and lip is like shhhh be quiet it’s a surprise for mommy!! so she’s like oh okay… so then they both sneak up on her and it’s just a cute little thing
this is SO cute oh my god. loved it so much i turned it into a little blurb, enjoy :))
the gallagher house was loud. as lip stepped in the door he was greeted by the sounds of music, laughter, and the sizzling of something on the stovetop. you were laughing loud and genuine in the kitchen with fiona and veronica, carefully tending to the pan on the stove.
"daddy?" emily's little voice greets lip's ears. she's the only one in the living room, sat happily in her playpen with her stuffed ducky and an assortment of toys. he could tell by the coloring page on the coffee table that debbie had been watching her. she pretended she was too old for those things, but secretly she loved coloring more than emmie did.
lip brings a finger to his lips, leaning down to scoop his sweet girl up off the ground. "shh, emmie. it's a surprise for mama, okay?"
"o-tay," emily whispers back.
"i'm gonna count to three, then we're gonna yell surprise. y'got it, eminem?"
"got it!"
lip grins, walking slowly and quietly until he stands in the doorway of the kitchen. "one.. two.. three-"
"surprise!!"
you yell in shock, whipping around with a startled look on your face from the sudden commotion. fiona's hand flies to her chest as she jumps. veronica nearly drops the pan of garlic bread she'd just pulled from the stove. it's quiet, just for a split second, while everyone processes that it's real, that lip's really home, then the commotion doubles.
you cry out in joy, throwing yourself into his arms. "you're home! god, lip you can't scare me like that!" you tell him, hiding a grin against his neck. "emmie girl, did you help daddy surprise me?"
emily nods, breaking out into a large grin.
"well would ya look at that, two years old an' she's already scheming!" fiona puts the knife she's been using to chop vegetables down on the counter and ruffles her brother's hair.
"must be a gallagher!" veronica chimes in, and you laugh, moving away so the rest of the family can get a chance to squeeze and scold their favorite college boy.
end.

lip gallagher with baby mia when one of the boys accidentally hurts her while they’re playing🥺
"How long you think they'll stay out there?" Lip rasped, hands smoothing down your waist, your hips.
"Hm," You sigh, leaning back against his chest, his chin hooking over your shoulder. "Probably not long enough." You grin.
Lip presses a kiss to your shoulder- inviting. "Think we could make it quick." Lip muttered, hips flush against yours. "Just bend over f'me, I'll be real quick-"
A screech, high pitched and urgent had you both stilling, every parental atom in your bodies halting and jumping with alarm. Lip looked out the window over the sink. Jude, Freddie, and Ronan all standing in a half circle over Amelia.
"Shit," Lip muttered, bounding out the back door towards the kids. "What happened? What's goin' on?" He demanded, looking at his boys with a stern glare.
Amelia sobbed, big tears that streamed down her cheeks, hands and knees skinned and bleeding. "What happened? C'mere, Mia." Lip cooed, picking up the four year old, holding her to his hip.
All three of his boys stared at him, unmoving, a little guilty. "Hey, I'm not askin' again." Lip snapped, firm and commanding. "What happened? How did your sister get hurt?"
You came down the steps, a wet cloth in hand, just in time to see Ronan start to crack. He was your baby, never very good at lying, especially to you.
"Oh, Mia, what happened? Are you ok?" You cooed, running a hand down her messy curls. "Roanie," You looked at your youngest softly. "What happened? Did she fall?"
"Yeah," Jude said before Ronan could answer. "She-She tripped."
"Ronan," You hummed. "Did your sister trip?"
Ronan fidgeted under the looks of you and Lip, unsure and nervous with his brother's beside him. You and Lip knew better, knew that one of them got too rough and pushed her.
"Jude pushed her." Freddie rolled his eyes. "Jude just own up to it. You're gonna get us all in trouble." He muttered.
"I didn't mean to!" Jude snarled, diving at his brother to smack him in a way that contradicted his opposition. "She wanted to play with us, and-and she got in the way!"
"Yeah? You're supposed to be careful." Lip tried to contain his irritation. Jude was a kid, they all were, only seven. "You're not 'sposed to lie to us either. What'd we say about that?"
"It's not fair!" Jude whined, shoulders dropping in a fit. "You make us play with Mia, and she doesn't even know how to! She cries all the time!"
"Hey," Lip snapped.
"Jude," You pressed a hand to Lip's arm soothingly. "You just have to be a little careful with her, ok? She's still little." Jude bristled with anger, lip jutting and face scrunching- he looked just like Lip. "And Mia, when the boys are playing, you need to get out of their way, ok?" You turn towards your youngest.
Lip glares at you, hugging Mia closer to his chest. You fight back an eye roll, he babied her so much- so soft now.
"Take her inside. I'll get the first aid in a sec." You mutter to Lip, nodding towards the door. "C'mere, Judie." You coo, pulling the sulking, young boy close.
"I know you don't like playing with your sister all the time, but thank you for including her." You whisper, your forehead against his. "She loves playing with you."
"I know." Jude sighs, breath a little shaky. "She just... She gets in the way, Mama."
"I know." You hum, hand stroking down his curls. "Just let me know next time, ok? You don't push people down."
"I didn't mean to." Jude whined. "She was in my way."
"Still," You countered. "You don't push. Tell her to move, and if she doesn't, come get me or Daddy, ok?" Jude nods, still a little pouty. "Ok, go play. You guys have about an hour then it's bath time." You announced, pressing a kiss to the top of Jude's head, before the three boys scattered back out to play.
Lip had Mia in his lap, rocking her soothingly while he tried to wipe away the dirt. He was so gentle, holding the cloth to her hands and pressing kisses to the palms. It made your heart burst.
"How's it look?" You ask, reaching under the sink for the First Aid- with four kids, it was always stocked.
"Just scraped." Lip muttered. "Think it just needs Neosporin and some bandaids."
"Does it hurt, baby?" You ask Mia, frowning lightly at her quivering little lip.
"Yeah." Amelia nodded, curling into Lip's lap. "I fell'd, and-and hurt my hands and my knees, Mama." She lisped, rubbing her wet eyes.
"I know. Daddy's been taking care of you, though, hasn't he?" You coo, pulling the Neosporin out. "Here, this will make you feel better, ok? Let Mama put it on."
"Burn?" Mia asked, pulling her hands back frantically before you could put the cream on. You'd had to use peroxide on a cut for her a few weeks ago and she'd screamed at the burn. Now she was terrified all medicine would burn.
"No, not burn. You won't feel this one at all." You hum, slathering her little scrapes in Neosporin. "You wanna pick out your bandaids?"

Au idea I'll probably never write:
Steve as seven au, BUT he escapes at the same time as El in season 1. They get separated after Benny's, when seven tells eleven to run and definitely kills a couple government agents to give her more time.
So the a plot of will being missing and Mike finding El? Standard canon except El is ALSO looking for her brother and is worried about him. She sees that he's mostly safe and tries to help find will but also insists she go to her brother soon.
B plot of barb and Nancy...idk I haven't really thought about how that'd work without Steve's kickback. Maybe they go to a party (like actual party not the five person hangout) together and get separated and no one notices barb disappear from the edge of the lawn. Idk
The C plot is seven, kinda bloody and definitely cold, wandering out into the middle of the street, and one Robin Buckley almost running him over with her bike. She immediately clocks "guy who seems pretty fucked up" about him, and offers him a ride to her house. But Robin has never been the most coordinated of people and biking with a(admittedly probably too skinny) teenage boy sitting in her package rack is hard, and combine that with a guy driving like the devil's after him, they end up swerving of the road.
Eddie steps out, apologizes profusely, and offers them a ride. seven is sceptical, especially when both of them pause when he tells them his name, but does end up in the van. He finally gets a chance to breathe once they get to the Buckleys', and Robin gets him some leftovers.
He sits in front of the tv set to a blank station, tucks his head into his shirt instead of blindfolds, and tries to see El.
He sees her older, with flowers braided through long hair, laughing. Too far. He sees her with short curls, a patterned button down, eating something in a cone beside a mustachioed man. Too far again. He sees her tiny, scared, holding his own small hand. Not far enough.
Finally, finally, he sees her as she knows her now, mostly, standing beside a group of children and in front of a monster in a large room.
Eddie and Robin have no idea why their new friend? Has turned the tv on to static and is hiding in his shirt, but figure he's had a rough day. He pops his head back out, blood dripping from his nose, and grins, telling them he knows where his sister will be.
Anyways blah blah blah El sees where people ARE Steve sees where people have been/will be (based on where/who they are right now. Futura is constantly in motion etc).
Idk season 2 would happen very similar as canon minus stancy break up (they never date and are just friends) (also Steve tells Robin and Eddie he and El are safe and they pass it on to the kids) El finds Kali, Steve fights demodogs, etc etc.
But I want a (pre?) season 3 scene where Robin and Steve are hanging out as soulmates do, door closed because they are discussing Sensitive Subjects (gay shit) and giggling like schoolgirls. Hopper, in all his disappointed dad glory, opens the door and starts in on a rant about keeping the door open three inches.
Steve, bitch that he is, just tilts his head to the side and says "but that is for when we are with people we date. I am not dating Robin."
Hopper, not yet picking up what's happening, sighs. "Kid. It's about propriety. You can't be alone with Robin, because what if you do start dating. Then it's. You have to set an example for El!"(it would be a nice move bringing up Older Brother Responsibility, except...well.)
"but we aren't. I am dating someone else?"
"still need the door open three inches, pal. When El is home, at least"(El is almost always home)
"we do! And you complain about the loud music!"
"wait. Who are you dating? I thought Nancy was dating Jonathan still. She barely comes over." Hopper please pick up what Steve is putting down oh my god.
(hop has forgotten Robin is there and she is trying very hard not to make noise but Steve keeps meeting her eye sometimes because dear god. truly an iconic moment in friendship history.)
"yeah obviously. Eddie comes over all the time, though."
"what does Ed- oooh. Ah. I see. That's why you keep the door open even though he complains."
Steve nods like Hopper is the dumbest man on the planet. He might just be. "Yes. Because you said El had to and she asked why I didn't have to so then I started to leave it open when Eddie was over. At least Eddie doesn't laugh at you to your face"
"Eddie laughs behind my back?"
"he said you didn't know we were dating but I told him of course you knew, the door is open three inches."
Hopper clasps Steve's shoulders and looks him in the eye. "Steve, I need you to keep telling him that. And not mention this very awkward conversation we had."
"because he was right."
"he doesn't need to know that."
That's all I got lmao (also check the tag ramble I added lol)
