hopper sees steve as a surrogate son. really, he shouldn't make such a habit of picking up stray children, but he looked at harrington and saw a kid who just... needed someone. saw the vacancy in his eyes when he thought no one was looking. saw the police file, the noise complaints and the few reports from hawkins middle school about suspicious bruises that had been swept away. saw a boy who'd seen too much. who just needed someone to lean on.
so he tries to be that. offers the kid a hand every now and then. keeps an eye on him, all alone in that big house, after everything. after '83 and then '84 and then summer of '85, when he'd signed his medical papers because there was no other adult for him around. it always left him a bit hollow, but he told himself that it was okay as long as he was around. as long as steve knew, deep down, that he could come to hopper for help, even if he'd wait until he was on the brink of overload before doing so.
it's all this that makes the sight of steve's car, that brown beemer that had dropped his daughter back home so many times, pulled into a ditch with the lights off cause his stomach to sink. a million awful things come to mind as he pulls in behind it and quickly hops out of his cruiser.
had he seen something and spiralled into a panic? had he gotten a bad migraine? had he run off into the woods alone?
thankfully, he finds the best case scenario: a slightly flushed and dishevelled steve rolling down a foggy window. grinning like he'd been caught with his hand in the cookie jar when he realises it's just hopper. he's fine, he's in one piece.
what's not fine, however, is the person with him in the backseat. eddie fucking munson, a kid hopper's put in handcuffs more than once. not because he's another boy, who gives a shit about that, but because it's eddie munson. drug dealer, general troublemaker, and definitely a bad influence on his boy.
he does his best to save the judgement this time, sensing the fear emanating off the couple. tells them to be more careful, to go home and kiss or do whatever there instead in case anyone else drives by tonight. munson looks at him like he's grown a second head, (which, fair. usually their interactions go a lot less amicably than this) and steve just tears up and nods. he reaches in to ruffle the boy's hair, ignoring the protests, before reluctantly trudging back to his car and driving away.
he calls steve the next afternoon and gets him to confess that, yes, he is dating edward 'eddie' munson. no, it's not a fling. yes, they're boyfriends, god help him. he gripes about it a decent amount, because really, steve? that one? you picked that one? but he keeps the tone light enough that steve feels comfortable enough to defend eddie's honour amidst laughter. within a week he's got steve sat across from him, eddie by his side looking two seconds away from shitting himself.
"well, boys." he grins, cracking his knuckles. eddie watches. gulps. "let's have a little chat, shall we?"

I had an idea at work that was literally just Grunge mom Joyce and Metalhead Eddie sitting and watching Hawaiian Shirt Hopper and Colorful Sweater Steve.
Maybe they're at a bbq or something. And these grungy metalheads are just sitting and talking and watching their colorful babes grill stuff for all the kids.
Hopper and Steve both yelling at them to calm the fuck down when they almost tumble into the grill, same dad tone and everything.
Hopper's brandishing his spatula, Steve's hands are on his hips. Eddie and Joyce just watching their tropical bird colored boys with the biggest gooeyest heart eyes.

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 ao3
There’s a different kind of disbelief on Steve’s face when Hopper walks in. His eyes flicker, and when he sucks in a sharp breath, Eddie realises that it’s some form of grief.
“You’re really back,” Steve says, and his voice is flat like it’s been hollowed out with shock; it must be one thing to hear the news secondhand compared to actually seeing it with his own eyes. “Where—where were you?”
The question is vulnerable in its simplicity.
Hopper sighs before smiling, bittersweet. “Hell,” he says, and there’s an odd kind of laugh underneath.
Eddie has the recurring feeling that he’s only operating on half a story, if even that. It’s strange, to know that everything of the past week was barely scratching the surface in the grand scheme of things.
Hopper fixes Eddie with a sudden, almost piercing kind of look—then it fades as he half-nods to himself. It gives Eddie the distinct impression that he’s somehow passed some kind of test without knowing he was taking one in the first place.
“Do me a favour, Munson, and get El some lunch?”
“Oh, uh.” Eddie blinks. “Yeah, I can—”
And then Hopper throws something to him. Eddie catches it, realises it’s his wallet, and has to suppress a nervous peal of laughter. Oh, if his fifteen year old self could see him now—getting the Chief of Police’s money. Voluntarily.
Eddie has to bite his tongue to stop himself from hysterically asking Hopper, “Are you sure?”
Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Steve hide a smile behind his hand, like he can read his thoughts.
El nods at the candy bars on the table and says, with gravitas, “We will come back for dessert.”
Steve chuckles. “Yeah, obviously.”
Eddie pauses, subtly raises an eyebrow in question. Steve tilts his head down in a little nod.
“Okay,” Eddie says to El, “lead the way.”
He turns back reflexively just as the door is swinging shut, sees Hopper pulling up a chair by Steve’s bed. He doesn’t want to eavesdrop, but he can’t avoid hearing them.
“You gonna talk to me, Harrington?”
“It’s—it’s over now, right? Not much to say.”
Another sigh. “Come on, kid. Shit like this—it eats away at you.”
“… All right.”
-
They order the same: burger and fries which are halfway decent, at least. It’s when El pulls her tray closer that Eddie sees the number on her wrist.
Jesus.
He has to sit down quickly, feels a little unsteady, and El gives him a questioning look before picking up a fry.
He doesn’t ask; he doesn’t want to. She seems so… light, despite everything.
So he makes a show of trying to squeeze ketchup and mustard out of the plastic bottles, acting like they’re made of lead, until El snorts water through her nose.
“Did you just mix them together?” El says, eyeing the sauce on Eddie’s plate with distrust.
Eddie shrugs; it’s a childhood habit he hadn’t noticed he’d fallen back into. “Yup. Look.” He takes a fry and dips it in the orangey sauce, wields it like it’s a paintbrush. “I’m an artist.”
“You are very strange, Eddie Munson,” El says with unconcealed delight.
-
Eddie’s plan is just to linger in the corridor when they get back, not wanting to disturb Hopper and Steve if they’re still talking, but him and El end up meeting Hopper just as he’s leaving Steve’s room. El ducks under his arm and runs through the closing door, but Eddie hangs back.
“Uh, your…” Eddie says awkwardly, then hands the wallet back to Hopper. “Thanks.”
Hopper shrugs away the word, then opens up the wallet. “Sorry, I used to have—just gotta double check it’s still—” he mutters, half to himself.
And it’s not the money he’s checking, but a tiny photograph, tucked into one of the sleeves. Eddie just sees a glimpse: El with her hair much longer, and Hopper fuller in the face.
They look happy.
“Gotta reconvene with Joyce,” Hopper says. “She’ll be up as soon as she can. As long as,” he nods at Steve’s door, “he’s not too tired.”
Eddie nods, but he kind of gets the feeling that Steve wouldn’t ever be too tired to see either of them.
Hopper claps him on the shoulder, which is an overall surreal experience. “Hey. You did good, Munson.”
“You paid for lunch,” Eddie says obtusely.
But he knows at least part of what Hopper is really driving at. And, in truth, he thinks the praise is unwarranted.
Of course I’d be there for him.
After everything Steve has been through, anything less isn’t an option.
- “Hey, El?” Steve asks. There’s a tiny speck of chocolate at the corner of his mouth, and it makes Eddie smile whenever he glances his way.
He let El take the couch while he perches on the window sill—if he presses the side of his face to the glass, he can just about see the hospital entrance. There are two people a little distance away from the front doors, talking with their heads close together; he thinks it must be Hopper and Joyce.
El snaps a piece of chocolate in two. “Hmm?”
“Hopper, is he—um, is he okay?”
El catches Eddie’s eye, throws a piece of chocolate to him, then smirks when he fumbles the catch. “Yes, he is okay. Why?”
“I just thought he looked… tired,” Steve says carefully, which is probably a kind way of saying he looked like death warmed over.
El looks at Steve. “He is tired,” she says. “He’s sleeping a lot, but he’ll be okay. It’ll just take time.”
They’re parroted words, Eddie realises—most likely from Joyce Byers, if he had to guess.
Steve relaxes a little at her reply. “Good… that’s…” He scratches distractedly at his face, then feels the chocolate mark and flushes slightly.
Eddie looks away with another smile.
He frowns when he notices the view outside again: Joyce is using emphatic hand gestures until Hopper gently holds her by the shoulders, then he’s drawing her in and kissing the top of her head.
“Sleep is good,” El goes on. “I slept for a whole day after—after Henry, and... My body was… sore and it helped.”
“Sore?” Steve echoes with a thread of alarm. “El, God, if it—if it was hurting you, then you—you need to be careful, you shouldn’t have—”
“No,” El says, incredibly firm.
“El—”
“No,” El repeats, and the room seems to drop several degrees.
Eddie remains frozen in his seat, heart in his throat. However Steve’s sentence was going to end, it would’ve no doubt horrified him.
“You were hurt,” El says. “You weren’t careful.”
“El, that’s—I was trying to—”
“You weren’t careful with yourself,” El says, and maybe it’s the boldness of it that has Eddie holding his breath.
“That’s different,” Steve says, but he’s looking down at the floor.
“Friends don’t lie,” El returns, and it sounds like an oath.
Steve looks up at her—closes his eyes for a moment, then nods.
When El speaks again, her voice is quieter, softer, but still just as firm.
“I couldn’t let it happen, Steve. Everyone would miss you. It… it would have hurt too much.”
Eddie looks out of the window again, but the view is blurred. His eyes are burning.
“Come here,” Steve says hoarsely, and when Eddie turns back, they are holding each other’s hand tightly like they’ve made a silent, solemn promise.

the dads of stranger things & steddie
wayne disapproving of steve vs. hopper disapproving of eddie before either of them have even formally met the kids
wayne went to highschool with richard harrington, a cruel and unpleasant man who targeted people like eddie and tormented them, and has heard much of the same about the sole harrington child.
meanwhile, hopper has never personally arrested eddie munson, but the kid’s kind of famous in the station. hopper’s never really spoken to him but they’ve definitely seen each other across the room. he knows the kids record (drug possession, underage drinking, petty theft, entering private property… the list goes on), though most of it is petty crime or has an understandable reason (hopper knows money is tight for most, especially munson, so he gets the selling to help his uncle pay the bills. but everything else? hopper is not happy about it).
wayne and hopper are both convinced their boys deserve better, no matter how much the kids talk about the positive qualities of the other.
one morning hopper pulls up to the munson trailer (to drive steve to breakfast at the byers), since he knows steve stayed the night. however, wayne munson arrives home from work at the same time.
now, the two of them have never really interacted before but know of each other, so while hopper is like “oh eddie’s uncle is home from work,” wayne is thinking “shit, what’d eddie do this time” (though it’s mostly fond).
wayne did not know harrington had stayed the night, and the only reason hopper allowed steve to stay in the first place is because joyce scolded him. wayne gestures to the door and asks “coffee?” and hop is like. yeah sure why not.
wayne still thinks hop is there bc eddie did smth meanwhile hop is just trying to get his kid back. imagine their surprise when they find steddie cuddling fast asleep on the couch, steve holding eddie atop him against his chest and eddie with his face burrowed into steve’s neck, arms pillowed underneath steve’s head.
hop and wayne kinda just stand there frozen before looking at each other and backing out the door. the moment it’s closed, wayne slumps onto the porch steps and pulls out a cigarette; hopper does the same and offers wayne a light. they don’t say anything, but they’re both thinking the same thing: maybe that kid isn’t so bad for him after all.

Part 1 Part 2 (Here) Part 3
TW: Hospitals, Previous character death mention, injury mentions
——————————————
The next time Steve wakes up, it's to a cacophony of noise. His head is pounding, and the hospital lights and the sound in the room are only making it worse. He lets out a low groan, whimpering as the sound agrivates his head.
The room becomes almost entirely silent, save for the beeping of the EKG he's hooked up to. "Robbie." He whispers, and the next he knows, the overhead lights are off, and a bedside lamp is turned on. He slumps in relief and squint around the room, trying to see what was making all that noise.
It took a few seconds for his pounding head to process the blur everything had to it and sighed. Robin must've taken out his contacts at some point. "Robs?" His voice was still a bit rough, and his throat was definitely sore, but it didn't hurt as much to talk.
"Hey, Stevie. I'm here. Migrane?" Her voice was soft in the way it always was on bad head days. It brought a small smile to his face.
He made a noise of confirmation. "Wr're m' glasses?" He slurred, and in the next moment, everything became clear again as his best friend slipped the circular frames on his face.
He took in the faces around him, realizing that half the party was in the room. Dustin and Erica were passed out in a couple of chairs behind Robin, Nancy was sitting in a chair on the other side of his bed, Jonathan standing behind her, Will leaning into Jon's side, and at the foot of his bed...
"H– Hop?" There the Chief stood, not looking quite as dead as previously believed.
"Hey, kiddo." Hopper's soft-spoken words broke a dam, and tears flowed down his cheeks.
Steve tore off his glasses, scrubbing at his face and trying to stifle his sobs. He was pulled into a familiar chest. Gentle, but sturdy, fingers combed through his hair, thumbs massaging at his temples, and he melted into the familiar touch.
Jim Hopper. Who he thought was dead. Who took him in after Billy Hargrove rocked his shit. Who took care of him through migranes and bad days. Who took him to get glasses when he noticed Steve's vision getting worse. Who refused to let him go home to his big empty house whenever he was at the cabin. Who built him a room at said cabin when he could've just kept staying on the couch. Jim Hopper, who was more of a Dad to him in a single year than his actual father had been his whole life.
"D–Dad– Where were you? Why–" He was cut off by a tight squeeze and a face buried in his hair.
"I'm sorry I wasn't here for you and your sister. Trust me, son, I wanted to be. I'll explain more once you've calmed down and everyone can share their sides of the story. For now, I need you to breathe."
Steve took a shuddering breath, exhaling shakily. He spent a couple of minutes doing that until his breathing had evened out. The pounding in his head returned with a vengeance, and he let out a whimper at the pain.
"Here, dingus. Nance made me go home to shower and get some sleep, so I went by your place and got some of your stuff. I brought your meds just in case." Robin said, passing him a cup of water and his migrane medicine.
He took the pills and slumped against Hopper, his left hand clutched in Robin's like she never let go. This moment would be perfect if his Ellie and Maxie were here, but as it were, he was perfectly content to just sit here with his capital P soulmate and his– his Dad.
If you told him a year ago that he had called Hopper Dad, he probably would have laughed in your face and played it off. A year ago, Steve would have, likely, been embarrassed, but now? Now he's just glad to have him back. He didn't feel that churn of embarrassment in his gut. He just felt content. Because Hopper is his dad, simple as that.
Eventually, he had to pull away. He slipped on his glasses and glanced around the room again, noticing everyone else had left. Steve cleared his throat, the pain in his head receding as the meds kicked in, and leveled Hopper with a look as the man took a seat in Nancy's vacated chair.
"Explain."
"Kid, you're getting through a migrane. I think this can wait–"
"Dad." The title is a conscious decision this time, a means of getting his attention, but also showing him he meant it. Hopper's mouth snapped shut, and he heaved a loud sigh.
Hop got up from his chair and let everyone else back in. They spent the next 30 or so minutes explaining everything that happened on both sides. Steve gripped Robin's hand in a tight squeeze when they got to the Russian stuff, and she returned the grip with the same fervor.
"Where is everyone else?" Steve asked once the explanations petered out.
"El and Lucas are sitting with Max right now, and Mike is with Eddie." Dustin answered from his chair, which was now pulled up next to Robin.
"Joyce and Murray are dealing with government people, last I heard. Trying to get me declared not-dead and trying to clear the Munson boy's name. If i had to guess, they're also discussing this batch of NDAs."
Steve nodded and had a wordless argument with Robin, consisting of facial expressions and hand gestures.
I want to see Max
You need to rest. You just woke up with a migrane.
No. I've been resting! You said you would take me to her when I woke up.
That was before you woke up with a migrane!
Robbie.
Robin threw up her hands with a groan. "Fine! I'll go find a nurse." Steve gave a smug grin, and she shot him a glare before leaving the room.
"I hate when you guys do that! Care to fill in the rest of us?" Dustin complained.
"Well, Robs is getting a nurse to, presumably, get a wheelchair for me since I doubt Rob will let me walk, and they're gonna take me to Max's room." A grin was plastered on Steve's face, despite the way it made his temples twinge in pain.
"Steve–"
"No." Steve cut Nancy off before she could continue her argument, giving her a cold stare. "I just had this argument with Robin. None of you are going to stop me from seeing her or any of the others."
"I learned a long while ago to not argue when it comes to the kids, especially their safety. If we don't let him, he'll just sneak off or find a way to get to them." Hopper said with a resigned sigh and a fond smile.
Steve shot his Dad– his Dad– a cheeky grin that turned into a genuine smile when Robbin returned with a wheel chair that she deposited by his bed before leveling him with a hard stare.
"Now, I am only allowing this because I know you'll do it anyways no matter what I say, but I swear to God, Steve. If I catch wind of you going to Max's room or Eddie's out of the wheelchair before you're cleared to walk? I will kill you myself, then I'll bring you back to life, because let's be honest, we're both way too codependent to live without each other."
Steve huffed a small laugh but nodded in agreement nonetheless. "I think we're entitled to a bit of codependency after being tortured and drugged together." He joked with a shrug and let his Dad and Robin help him into the chair. He winced as his sides pulsed with pain at the movement but waved off the concerned looks.
"Let's go!" Steve quietly exclaimed, mindful of his still aching head and throat, and they were off to Max's room, Robin pushing him the whole way.
——————————————
Alright! I am going to cut it off there because this was getting long. I will be making a part 3, so let me know if you want to be on the tag list!

OK I NEED TO SHARE THIS FIC RIGHT NOW OR I WILL DIE
THIS. FIC. IS. FUCKING. EXCEPTIONAL.
it was a one-chapter idea that had so much good going for it that the author is expanding it into a full fic and series. it has 12 chapters out right now (total undetermined but they seem to have a lot planned) and every single one is absolute art. its also at a pretty good place right now so stopping at chapter 12 isn't cliffhanger torture or anything, it has questions unresolved and whatnot but im not falling apart at the seams from not knowing what happens next.
no im falling apart at the seams from everything thats already happened.
(this is your vague spoiler warning. im mostly warning/disclaiming shit and roleplaying a car salesman as i try to get you to give this fic a shot)
fair warning this fic is heavy. it deals with the upside down trauma and the canon-divergent trauma the author introduced so incredibly realistically that it kinda makes you realize how desensitized we are to steve getting hurt. its amazing.
also feel the need to tell you its not the type of realistic that leaves you depressed after reading thank god. its real and heavy but not demoralizing. characters cry and grieve and scream but characters also hug and comfort each other and make little jokes to lighten the mood. there are worst case scenarios and best case scenarios and you get to be with the characters in the aftermath and their healing.
the structure and pacing is really good. it centers around steve but it alternates povs to most of the other characters and gets their perspective and struggles (has switched between steve, eddie, hopper, max, lucas, dustin, nancy, wayne, b*lly, and steves mom) and that makes almost every character feel like they're a main character or at the very least really well developed.
also this is your anti-b*lly h*rgrove warning. hes 100% an irredeemable monster here so if that bothers you definitely skip this because his impact is felt every chapter. all the other characters are flawed but understandable and definitely not malicious.
and ofc read the tags and chapter notes for content warnings and such. the author tells you what areas to skip over if certain subjects bother you but some aspects (like what happened to steve and max and eddie's childhood traumas) are too integral to the story and can't be glossed over without missing plot details.
if its at all interesting to you (and its safe for you to read) please just go check out the first chapter and you'll get it. its really good.

liiiaaamm all of your wip titles sound sooooo good omg, but i am especially curious about plastic stars, PLEASE do tell all 👀✨️💕
Maaaaaaack Omg im obsessed with all of yours too. I need you to tell me about each and every one of them tbh. I already explained the premise for Plastic stars here but I thought I’d put a little snippet down below because it’s you 🤩
Jim waited until the deputies were starting to pack up before grabbing the file in one fist and stomping towards his office.
“Do you have any explanation for screwing up this badly?!” He snapped, slamming the door as he came in. Steve jumped nearly a foot in the air at the sound, turning in his seat and blinking slowly in Hopper’s direction.
“Ooo you’re mad,” the teen whispered, barely holding back drunken laughter that immediately set Jim’s teeth on edge.
“Mad? No, Steve, I’m not mad,” Hopper said in a dangerously soft tone, “I’m fucking pissed. I cannot believe how stupid you were tonight!”
Steve scoffed, turning his back on the police chief and slumping down in his chair.
“Old news, Hop. Everyone already knows I’m stupid.”
Jim’s jaw tightened to steel and he literally could feel the vein in his temple start to throb. He marched forward and slammed the file down on the desk, yanking Steve’s chair so they were fully facing each other.
“Oh no, we’re not doing that. You might not be a brainiac, but you are smart enough to know not to drive drunk,” Jim spat out.
Hehehe yeahhhhhh this is part of the climax of the story actually, but that’s really the only part I have fleshed out so! Here you have it. Ty for the ask!!

Hopper accidentally becomes the biggest ally in Hawkins out of hatred for Mike Wheeler. El wants to date Max? Perfect, Mike is terrified of Max. El wants to date Max and Lucas? Even better, more people to keep Mike away. Will comes out to Joyce and Hop? Hopper is immediately studying up on gay culture and flagging so he can find him a Hop ApprovedTM boyfriend. He sees that nice boy Gareth cuff his jeans one time and starts inviting him to family dinner. Mike seems annoyed that Steve is spending more time with Munson? A pamphlet titled “Accepting your Bisexuality” finds its way into Steve’s jacket pocket. Hopper has never seen Mike as furious as the day Steve and Munson arrive at dinner holding hands. It’s a good day. Hopper isn’t sure how Nancy dating the Buckley girl will annoy Mike, but he’s willing to give it a shot.

Okay but Joyce doesn't like Steve au that's juxtaposed by Hopper having accidentally adopted Steve but neither of them know the other's strong feelings towards Steve.
Joyce is eyeballing him all suspicious and the like. She doesn't trust him around the kids, is wary when Will talks about how he's actually pretty cool, and that Dustin is totally obsessed with him now. She greatful for his help with...whatever he did with the Upside Down stuff, but still. She knows his reputation. And her opinion doesn't change until post season 4 (despite a very frosty exchange she had with Claudia Henderson about maybe...being careful about letting Steve hang around Dustin pre S3) because suddenly Steve is like. Always at the house she shares with Hopper. She's ticked at first, because why is this random boy in her house? Hanging out and watching baseball with her daughter? And when she mentions why Steve is there all the time, at one of the seemingly rare times Steve isn't eating dinner with them (she thinks a date was mentioned, and she refrained from scoffing at how typical it was for Steve to have a date and probably not call back) El and Hop look at her like she's crazy.
Because Hopper is no longer afraid to admit his fondness for Steve. So much so that Joyce's distain for the kid throws him way off base. The whole time Joyce has been side eying Steve Hopper was sitting there smiling like Steve :) good kid :) he helped El with her hair after Kali. :') Talked about how to accept things you've done that make you feel guilty while working to make up for them and grow to be a better person :) always putting himself on the line to protect those kids :) wrote to El all the time while she was in California so she knew he was still her friend :) glad they have him. Glad El has him :)he called her Ellie last week that's cute :) unfortunate taste in men but apparently that's a family trait so I will deal with it :/ my son :')
So they're both going "why wouldn't he be?"
And Joyce barrels on like "well, he's always here and he and Jon are barely speaking-"
"Woah that not exactly...Steve's fault..."
"and he's closest to Dustin of the kids, not Will."
"not my fault I was dealing with possession when Dustin, Lucas, and Max had their special Steve adventure" (El pats his shoulder in sympathy)
"and now he's missing dinner for a date. just don't get no one else thinks it's weird!"
El frowns "it's their two-month anniversary."
"huh?"
"him and--his date. They have been dating for two months. It's special."
"El, you don't even know her name...I don't think it's that-"
"yes I do! He told me. But asked me not to tell. Right Will?"
Will nods. "They want to keep it quiet. Not ready for everyone to know? I don't know who it is but that's what Steve said when we asked. Robin definitely knows too."
"so why'd he tell El?"
"and me. He told us together."
El rolls her eyes "because he is my brother?"
Hopper's face scrunches in a smile, proud and warm.
"El, we aren't his family..."Joyce is trying, she is! But she isn't fully understanding exactly what's happening or everything in winter/spring 1985.
El looks mortally offended by this. "yes we are. Steve was my brother first."
And Joyce has to reckon with the fact that maybe she's misjudged Steve a little, if El and Hop are getting so defensive over him....

Having thoughts of The Party being touchy as all fuck after everything.
Like you cannot enter nor leave any kind of hang out without a hug, high-five, pat, or anything from everyone you were hanging out with.
And then, suddenly, you aren’t able to leave without a kiss or hug of some kind from Steve.
It started after the bullshit that was the Starcourt Mall. The kids were leaving Steve’s house from a DnD session maybe 2 months before the Byers left for Cali.
Dustin was taking forever to pull his shoes on and get out the house to his moms car and everyone was complaining. It was one of those rare times where Steve wasn’t the one carting them all around— they all had their own rides.
Dustin got his shoes on and Steve handed him his bag and— without thinking— pressed a kiss to the top of his hat before waving him out the door.
The rest of the kids are silent until Mike speaks up bitchily “what about us, asshole?”
Steve has no idea what they mean until El points to her head with a grin. Steve deals out head and forehead kisses for everyone and waves them off to their respective rides.
And then it just— sticks. At first it’s with just the kids whenever he sees them. He’ll usually greet them with a hug or an exasperated sigh and then say goodbye with a kiss to their foreheads.
Not even Mike complains. This is the kind of shit he never got while growing up— might as well make the best of it.
And then it migrates to Robin as well, and the Nancy is joining in on the hugs (they’re still too awkward for the kisses but the hugs are enough for now).
And Steve never holds back, not even in public. Again, no one complains.
And that’s how Hellfire finds out about the kissing arrangement (that might be the title of this if I make it an actual fic). They watch as Steve presses a forehead kiss to Mike, Lucas, and Dustin before waving them off and then presses a kiss to Max’s head and giving her a tight hug.
The guys try to make fun of the kids for it but none of them are embarrassed.
“It’s Steve, dude. He’s like a mom.”
“The kisses are actually really comforting.”
“It’s a Party thing.”
And then the fuckery of 1986 and Vecna happens and suddenly Eddie’s in on the hugs and pats and high-fives.
And then.
And then.
He’s in on the kisses.
Steve doles out the kisses like usual one night after Hellfire and gives one to everyone— including Eddie.
And Eddie panics and gives Steve one right back.
And then the kids are going feral about wanting to give Steve a kiss too.
And Eddie leaves during the chaos.
And then they don’t talk about it.
Until Steve and Eddie do it again.
And the kids accept is as the new normal; you have to give Steve a kiss back.
And then Steve and Eddie have an excuse to kiss each other on the foreheads and cheeks and noses.
One night they’re hanging out, just the two of them at the trailer after Wayne left for work.
Steve had greeted Eddie with a tight hug the moment he’d gotten in the trailer. Eddie had squeezed back just as tight if not tighter.
Steve was getting ready to leave, and on instinct leant in to kiss Eddie, but Eddie was also leaning in to kiss Steve. So they meet in the middle and accidentally kiss on the lips.
And then the new normal for Steve and Eddie is kissing on the lips goodbye.
Idk, just Steve being a very touchy feely person makes me so happy

El being wholesome with Steve. El being wholesome with Steve. The weird sibling duo we didn’t know we needed. I need more of it. I might do it….no I’ve done enough of them…
Okay, okay. But just picture this:
The kids trying to embarrass Steve all the time with photos and stories to Eddie, but El ruins it every.single.time. because she is so unbelievably wholesome when it comes to Steve.
Here is everyone pulling out scoops photos (which Eddie actually loves thank you very much) and sharing stories about his failed dates. Dustin tells Eddie specifically about the time he was teaching Lucas basketball and Lucas threw the ball too hard at the backboard and hit Steve in the face.
So they are all poking fun at Steve in his and Robin’s apartment (because in every universe these platonic soulmates live together) and there is just El who randomly chimes in:
“Steve took me to this thing called a ren faire once. It was very fun. We both looked really pretty.”
Eddie absolutely melts at the story and gushes over the photos she has.
And everyone gets quiet every time, because no one wants to criticize El, but one time Max gently goes, “You know that’s like….nice right? We’re making fun of him.”
Everyone one expects her to being embarrassed or confused but instead she simple says.
“I know. I don’t like it. Steve’s nice.”
And she embarrasses everyone, except Robin and Eddie who are the only ones Steve never gets upset with when they make fun of him. They all mumble out apologies, and Steve turns to Dustin and goes:
“This is why she gets a special section in the freezer. All different flavors of eggos.”
El’s eyes get wide. “Even the blueberry ones?”
Steve gives her hair a tousle, “Especially the blueberry ones.”

Wayne Munson helping a wolf out of a bear trap, only for said wolf to start bringing him deer and rabbits and sometimes weirdly cash? And none of the raccoons have been digging round his trash like they usually do…
He gets a knock on the door one day and it’s his old buddy Jim Hopper with that Harrington kid standing sheepishly behind him, with his arm wrapped up in bandages and a long cut running through his brow. Hop cuffs the kid on the back of the head and then the boy is stepping forward and apologizing, then saying “thanks again, sir.”
It takes Wayne a few days to piece together that the boy is his wolf.
