How I ditched streaming services and learned to love Linux: A step-by-step guide to building your very own personal media streaming server (V2.0: REVISED AND EXPANDED EDITION)
This is a revised, corrected and expanded version of my tutorial on setting up a personal media server that previously appeared on my old blog (donjuan-auxenfers). I expect that that post is still making the rounds (hopefully with my addendum on modifying group share permissions in Ubuntu to circumvent 0x8007003B "Unexpected Network Error" messages in Windows when transferring files) but I have no way of checking. Anyway this new revised version of the tutorial corrects one or two small errors I discovered when rereading what I wrote, adds links to all products mentioned and is just more polished generally. I also expanded it a bit, pointing more adventurous users toward programs such as Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr and Overseerr which can be used for automating user requests and media collection.
So then, what is this tutorial? This is a tutorial on how to build and set up your own personal media server using Ubuntu as an operating system and Plex (or Jellyfin) to not only manage your media,, but to stream that media to your devices both locally at home, and remotely to anywhere in the world where you have an internet connection. This is a tutorial about how building a personal media server and stuffing it full of films, television shows and music that you acquired through indiscriminate and voracious media piracy various legal methods like ripping your own physical media to disk, you’ll be free to completely ditch paid streaming services. No more will you have to pay for Disney+, Netflix, HBOMAX, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Peacock, CBS All Access, Paramount+, Crave or any other streaming service that is not named Criterion Channel (which is actually good). If you want to watch your favourite films and television shows, you’ll have your own custom service that only features things that you want to see, and where you have control over your own files and how they’re delivered to you. And for music fans out there, both Jellyfin and Plex support music streaming, meaning you can even ditch music streaming services. Goodbye Spotify, Youtube Music, Tidal and Apple Music, welcome back unreasonably large MP3 (or FLAC) collections.
On the hardware front, I’m going to offer a few options catered towards differing budgets and media library sizes. The cost of getting a media server up and running using this guide will cost you anywhere from $450 CDN/$325 USD at the entry level to $1500 CDN/$1100 USD at the high end. My own server was priced closer to the higher figure, with much of that cost being hard drives. If that seems excessive, consider for a moment, maybe you have a roommate, a close friend, or a family member who would be willing to chip in a few bucks towards your little project provided they get a share of the bounty. This is how my server was funded. It might also be worth thinking about cost over time, how much you spend yearly on subscriptions vs. a one time cost of setting up a server. Additionally there's just the joy of being able to scream "fuck you" at all those show cancelling, movie deleting, hedge fund vampire CEOs who run the studios through denying them your money. Drive a stake through David Zaslav's heart.
On the software side I will walk you step-by-step through installing Ubuntu as your server's operating system, configuring your storage as a RAIDz array with ZFS, sharing your zpool to Windows with Samba, running a remote connection between your server and your Windows PC, and then a little about started with Plex/Jellyfin. Every terminal command you will need to input will be provided, and I even share a custom #bash script that will make used vs. available drive space on your server display correctly in Windows.
If you have a different preferred flavour of Linux (Arch, Manjaro, Redhat, Fedora, Mint, OpenSUSE, CentOS, Slackware etc. et. al.) and are aching to tell me off for being basic and using Ubuntu, this tutorial is not for you. The sort of person with a preferred Linux distro is the sort of person who can do this sort of thing in their sleep. Also I don't care. This tutorial is intended for the average home computer user. This is also why we’re not using a more exotic home server solution like running everything through Docker Containers and managing it through a dashboard like Homarr or Heimdall. While such solutions are fantastic and can be very easy to maintain once you have it all set up, wrapping your brain around Docker is a whole thing in and of itself. If you do follow this tutorial and had fun putting everything together, then I would encourage you to return in a year’s time, do your research and set up everything with Docker Containers.
Lastly, this is a tutorial aimed at Windows users. Although I was a daily user of OS X for many years (roughly 2008-2023) and I've dabbled quite a bit with various Linux distributions (mostly Ubuntu and Manjaro), my primary OS these days is Windows 11. Many things in this tutorial will still be applicable to Mac users, but others (e.g. setting up shares) you will have to look up for yourself. I doubt it would be difficult to do so.
Nothing in this tutorial will require feats of computing expertise. All you will need is a basic computer literacy (i.e. an understanding of what a filesystem and directory are, and a degree of comfort in the settings menu) and a willingness to learn a thing or two. While this guide may look overwhelming at first glance, it is only because I want to be as thorough as possible. I want you to understand exactly what it is you're doing, I don't want you to just blindly follow steps. If you half-way know what you’re doing, you will be much better prepared if you ever need to troubleshoot.
Honestly, once you have all the hardware ready it shouldn't take more than a weekend to get everything up and running.
(This tutorial is just shy of seven thousand words long so the rest is under the cut.)
Step One: Choosing Your Hardware
Linux is a light weight operating system, depending on the distribution there's close to no bloat. There are recent distributions available at this very moment that will run perfectly fine on a fourteen year old i3 with 4GB of RAM. Moreover, running Plex or Jellyfin isn’t resource intensive in 90% of use cases. All this is to say, we don’t require an expensive or powerful computer. This means that there are several options available: 1) use an old computer you already have sitting around but aren't using 2) buy a used workstation from eBay, or what I believe to be the best option, 3) order an N100 Mini-PC from AliExpress or Amazon.
Note: If you already have an old PC sitting around that you’ve decided to use, fantastic, move on to the next step.
When weighing your options, keep a few things in mind: the number of people you expect to be streaming simultaneously at any one time, the resolution and bitrate of your media library (4k video takes a lot more processing power than 1080p) and most importantly, how many of those clients are going to be transcoding at any one time. Transcoding is what happens when the playback device does not natively support direct playback of the source file. This can happen for a number of reasons, such as the playback device's native resolution being lower than the file's internal resolution, or because the source file was encoded in a video codec unsupported by the playback device.
Ideally we want any transcoding to be performed by hardware. This means we should be looking for a computer with an Intel processor with Quick Sync. Quick Sync is a dedicated core on the CPU die designed specifically for video encoding and decoding. This specialized hardware makes for highly efficient transcoding both in terms of processing overhead and power draw. Without these Quick Sync cores, transcoding must be brute forced through software. This takes up much more of a CPU’s processing power and requires much more energy. But not all Quick Sync cores are created equal and you need to keep this in mind if you've decided either to use an old computer or to shop for a used workstation on eBay
Any Intel processor from second generation Core (Sandy Bridge circa 2011) onwards has Quick Sync cores. It's not until 6th gen (Skylake), however, that the cores support the H.265 HEVC codec. Intel’s 10th gen (Comet Lake) processors introduce support for 10bit HEVC and HDR tone mapping. And the recent 12th gen (Alder Lake) processors brought with them hardware AV1 decoding. As an example, while an 8th gen (Kaby Lake) i5-8500 will be able to hardware transcode a H.265 encoded file, it will fall back to software transcoding if given a 10bit H.265 file. If you’ve decided to use that old PC or to look on eBay for an old Dell Optiplex keep this in mind.
Note 1: The price of old workstations varies wildly and fluctuates frequently. If you get lucky and go shopping shortly after a workplace has liquidated a large number of their workstations you can find deals for as low as $100 on a barebones system, but generally an i5-8500 workstation with 16gb RAM will cost you somewhere in the area of $260 CDN/$200 USD.
Note 2: The AMD equivalent to Quick Sync is called Video Core Next, and while it's fine, it's not as efficient and not as mature a technology. It was only introduced with the first generation Ryzen CPUs and it only got decent with their newest CPUs, we want something cheap.
Alternatively you could forgo having to keep track of what generation of CPU is equipped with Quick Sync cores that feature support for which codecs, and just buy an N100 mini-PC. For around the same price or less of a used workstation you can pick up a Mini-PC with an Intel N100 processor. The N100 is a four-core processor based on the 12th gen Alder Lake architecture and comes equipped with the latest revision of the Quick Sync cores. These little processors offer astounding hardware transcoding capabilities for their size and power draw. Otherwise they perform equivalent to an i5-6500, which isn't a terrible CPU. A friend of mine uses an N100 machine as a dedicated retro emulation gaming system and it does everything up to 6th generation consoles just fine. The N100 is also a remarkably efficient chip, it sips power. In fact, the difference between running one of these and an old workstation could work out to hundreds of dollars a year in energy bills depending on where you live.
You can find these Mini-PCs all over Amazon or for a little cheaper on AliExpress. They range in price from $170 CDN/$125 USD for a no name N100 with 8GB RAM to $280 CDN/$200 USD for a Beelink S12 Pro with 16GB RAM. The brand doesn't really matter, they're all coming from the same three factories in Shenzen, go for whichever one fits your budget or has features you want. 8GB RAM should be enough, Linux is lightweight and Plex only calls for 2GB RAM. 16GB RAM might result in a slightly snappier experience, especially with ZFS. A 256GB SSD is more than enough for what we need as a boot drive, but going for a bigger drive might allow you to get away with things like creating preview thumbnails for Plex, but it’s up to you and your budget.
The Mini-PC I wound up buying was a Firebat AK2 Plus with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. It looks like this:
Tumblr media
Note: Be forewarned that if you decide to order a Mini-PC from AliExpress, note the type of power adapter it ships with. The mini-PC I bought came with an EU power adapter and I had to supply my own North American power supply. Thankfully this is a minor issue as a barrel plug 30W/12V/2.5A power adapters are plentiful and can be had for $10.
Step Two: Choosing Your Storage
Storage is the most important part of our build. It is also the most expensive. Thankfully it’s also the most easily upgrade-able down the line.
For people with a smaller media collection (4TB to 8TB), a more limited budget, or who will only ever have two simultaneous streams running, I would say that the most economical course of action would be to buy a USB 3.0 8TB external HDD. Something like this one from Western Digital or this one from Seagate. One of these external drives will cost you in the area of $200 CDN/$140 USD. Down the line you could add a second external drive or replace it with a multi-drive RAIDz set up such as detailed below.
If a single external drive the path for you, move on to step three.
For people with larger media libraries (12TB+), who prefer media in 4k, or care who about data redundancy, the answer is a RAID array featuring multiple HDDs in an enclosure.
Note: If you are using an old PC or used workstatiom as your server and have the room for at least three 3.5" drives, and as many open SATA ports on your mother board you won't need an enclosure, just install the drives into the case. If your old computer is a laptop or doesn’t have room for more internal drives, then I would suggest an enclosure.
The minimum number of drives needed to run a RAIDz array is three, and seeing as RAIDz is what we will be using, you should be looking for an enclosure with three to five bays. I think that four disks makes for a good compromise for a home server. Regardless of whether you go for a three, four, or five bay enclosure, do be aware that in a RAIDz array the space equivalent of one of the drives will be dedicated to parity at a ratio expressed by the equation 1 − 1/n i.e. in a four bay enclosure equipped with four 12TB drives, if we configured our drives in a RAIDz1 array we would be left with a total of 36TB of usable space (48TB raw size). The reason for why we might sacrifice storage space in such a manner will be explained in the next section.
A four bay enclosure will cost somewhere in the area of $200 CDN/$140 USD. You don't need anything fancy, we don't need anything with hardware RAID controls (RAIDz is done entirely in software) or even USB-C. An enclosure with USB 3.0 will perform perfectly fine. Don’t worry too much about USB speed bottlenecks. A mechanical HDD will be limited by the speed of its mechanism long before before it will be limited by the speed of a USB connection. I've seen decent looking enclosures from TerraMaster, Yottamaster, Mediasonic and Sabrent.
When it comes to selecting the drives, as of this writing, the best value (dollar per gigabyte) are those in the range of 12TB to 20TB. I settled on 12TB drives myself. If 12TB to 20TB drives are out of your budget, go with what you can afford, or look into refurbished drives. I'm not sold on the idea of refurbished drives but many people swear by them.
When shopping for harddrives, search for drives designed specifically for NAS use. Drives designed for NAS use typically have better vibration dampening and are designed to be active 24/7. They will also often make use of CMR (conventional magnetic recording) as opposed to SMR (shingled magnetic recording). This nets them a sizable read/write performance bump over typical desktop drives. Seagate Ironwolf and Toshiba NAS are both well regarded brands when it comes to NAS drives. I would avoid Western Digital Red drives at this time. WD Reds were a go to recommendation up until earlier this year when it was revealed that they feature firmware that will throw up false SMART warnings telling you to replace the drive at the three year mark quite often when there is nothing at all wrong with that drive. It will likely even be good for another six, seven, or more years.

Step Three: Installing Linux
For this step you will need a USB thumbdrive of at least 6GB in capacity, an .ISO of Ubuntu, and a way to make that thumbdrive bootable media.
First download a copy of Ubuntu desktop (for best performance we could download the Server release, but for new Linux users I would recommend against the server release. The server release is strictly command line interface only, and having a GUI is very helpful for most people. Not many people are wholly comfortable doing everything through the command line, I'm certainly not one of them, and I grew up with DOS 6.0. 22.04.3 Jammy Jellyfish is the current Long Term Service release, this is the one to get.
Download the .ISO and then download and install balenaEtcher on your Windows PC. BalenaEtcher is an easy to use program for creating bootable media, you simply insert your thumbdrive, select the .ISO you just downloaded, and it will create a bootable installation media for you.
Once you've made a bootable media and you've got your Mini-PC (or you old PC/used workstation) in front of you, hook it directly into your router with an ethernet cable, and then plug in the HDD enclosure, a monitor, a mouse and a keyboard. Now turn that sucker on and hit whatever key gets you into the BIOS (typically ESC, DEL or F2). If you’re using a Mini-PC check to make sure that the P1 and P2 power limits are set correctly, my N100's P1 limit was set at 10W, a full 20W under the chip's power limit. Also make sure that the RAM is running at the advertised speed. My Mini-PC’s RAM was set at 2333Mhz out of the box when it should have been 3200Mhz. Once you’ve done that, key over to the boot order and place the USB drive first in the boot order. Then save the BIOS settings and restart.
After you restart you’ll be greeted by Ubuntu's installation screen. Installing Ubuntu is really straight forward, select the "minimal" installation option, as we won't need anything on this computer except for a browser (Ubuntu comes preinstalled with Firefox) and Plex Media Server/Jellyfin Media Server. Also remember to delete and reformat that Windows partition! We don't need it.
Step Four: Installing ZFS and Setting Up the RAIDz Array
Note: If you opted for just a single external HDD skip this step and move onto setting up a Samba share.
Once Ubuntu is installed it's time to configure our storage by installing ZFS to build our RAIDz array. ZFS is a "next-gen" file system that is both massively flexible and massively complex. It's capable of snapshot backup, self healing error correction, ZFS pools can be configured with drives operating in a supplemental manner alongside the storage vdev (e.g. fast cache, dedicated secondary intent log, hot swap spares etc.). It's also a file system very amenable to fine tuning. Block and sector size are adjustable to use case and you're afforded the option of different methods of inline compression. If you'd like a very detailed overview and explanation of its various features and tips on tuning a ZFS array check out these articles from Ars Technica. For now we're going to ignore all these features and keep it simple, we're going to pull our drives together into a single vdev running in RAIDz which will be the entirety of our zpool, no fancy cache drive or SLOG.
Open up the terminal and type the following commands:
sudo apt update
then
sudo apt install zfsutils-linux
This will install the ZFS utility. Verify that it's installed with the following command:
zfs --version
Now, it's time to check that the HDDs we have in the enclosure are healthy, running, and recognized. We also want to find out their device IDs and take note of them:
sudo fdisk -1
Note: You might be wondering why some of these commands require "sudo" in front of them while others don't. "Sudo" is short for "super user do”. When and where "sudo" is used has to do with the way permissions are set up in Linux. Only the "root" user has the access level to perform certain tasks in Linux. As a matter of security and safety regular user accounts are kept separate from the "root" user. It's not advised (or even possible) to boot into Linux as "root" with most modern distributions. Instead by using "sudo" our regular user account is temporarily given the power to do otherwise forbidden things. Don't worry about it too much at this stage, but if you want to know more check out this introduction.
If everything is working you should get a list of the various drives detected along with their device IDs which will look like this: /dev/sdc. You can also check the device IDs of the drives by opening the disk utility app. Jot these IDs down as we'll need them for our next step, creating our RAIDz array.
RAIDz is similar to RAID-5 in that instead of striping your data over multiple disks, exchanging redundancy for speed and available space (RAID-0), or mirroring your data writing by two copies of every piece (RAID-1), it instead writes parity blocks across the disks in addition to striping, this provides a balance of speed, redundancy and available space. If a single drive fails, the parity blocks on the working drives can be used to reconstruct the entire array as soon as a replacement drive is added.
Additionally, RAIDz improves over some of the common RAID-5 flaws. It's more resilient and capable of self healing, as it is capable of automatically checking for errors against a checksum. It's more forgiving in this way, and it's likely that you'll be able to detect when a drive is dying well before it fails. A RAIDz array can survive the loss of any one drive.
Note: While RAIDz is indeed resilient, if a second drive fails during the rebuild, you're fucked. Always keep backups of things you can't afford to lose. This tutorial, however, is not about proper data safety.
To create the pool, use the following command:
sudo zpool create "zpoolnamehere" raidz "device IDs of drives we're putting in the pool"
For example, let's creatively name our zpool "mypool". This poil will consist of four drives which have the device IDs: sdb, sdc, sdd, and sde. The resulting command will look like this:
sudo zpool create mypool raidz /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde
If as an example you bought five HDDs and decided you wanted more redundancy dedicating two drive to this purpose, we would modify the command to "raidz2" and the command would look something like the following:
sudo zpool create mypool raidz2 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde /dev/sdf
An array configured like this is known as RAIDz2 and is able to survive two disk failures.
Once the zpool has been created, we can check its status with the command:
zpool status
Or more concisely with:
zpool list
The nice thing about ZFS as a file system is that a pool is ready to go immediately after creation. If we were to set up a traditional RAID-5 array using mbam, we'd have to sit through a potentially hours long process of reformatting and partitioning the drives. Instead we're ready to go right out the gates.
The zpool should be automatically mounted to the filesystem after creation, check on that with the following:
df -hT | grep zfs
Note: If your computer ever loses power suddenly, say in event of a power outage, you may have to re-import your pool. In most cases, ZFS will automatically import and mount your pool, but if it doesn’t and you can't see your array, simply open the terminal and type sudo zpool import -a.
By default a zpool is mounted at /"zpoolname". The pool should be under our ownership but let's make sure with the following command:
sudo chown -R "yourlinuxusername" /"zpoolname"
Note: Changing file and folder ownership with "chown" and file and folder permissions with "chmod" are essential commands for much of the admin work in Linux, but we won't be dealing with them extensively in this guide. If you'd like a deeper tutorial and explanation you can check out these two guides: chown and chmod.
Tumblr media
You can access the zpool file system through the GUI by opening the file manager (the Ubuntu default file manager is called Nautilus) and clicking on "Other Locations" on the sidebar, then entering the Ubuntu file system and looking for a folder with your pool's name. Bookmark the folder on the sidebar for easy access.
Tumblr media
Your storage pool is now ready to go. Assuming that we already have some files on our Windows PC we want to copy to over, we're going to need to install and configure Samba to make the pool accessible in Windows.
Step Five: Setting Up Samba/Sharing
Samba is what's going to let us share the zpool with Windows and allow us to write to it from our Windows machine. First let's install Samba with the following commands:
sudo apt-get update
then
sudo apt-get install samba
Next create a password for Samba.
sudo smbpswd -a "yourlinuxusername"
It will then prompt you to create a password. Just reuse your Ubuntu user password for simplicity's sake.
Note: if you're using just a single external drive replace the zpool location in the following commands with wherever it is your external drive is mounted, for more information see this guide on mounting an external drive in Ubuntu.
After you've created a password we're going to create a shareable folder in our pool with this command
mkdir /"zpoolname"/"foldername"
Now we're going to open the smb.conf file and make that folder shareable. Enter the following command.
sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
This will open the .conf file in nano, the terminal text editor program. Now at the end of smb.conf add the following entry:
["foldername"]
path = /"zpoolname"/"foldername"
available = yes
valid users = "yourlinuxusername"
read only = no
writable = yes
browseable = yes
guest ok = no
Ensure that there are no line breaks between the lines and that there's a space on both sides of the equals sign. Our next step is to allow Samba traffic through the firewall:
sudo ufw allow samba
Finally restart the Samba service:
sudo systemctl restart smbd
At this point we'll be able to access to the pool, browse its contents, and read and write to it from Windows. But there's one more thing left to do, Windows doesn't natively support the ZFS file systems and will read the used/available/total space in the pool incorrectly. Windows will read available space as total drive space, and all used space as null. This leads to Windows only displaying a dwindling amount of "available" space as the drives are filled. We can fix this! Functionally this doesn't actually matter, we can still write and read to and from the disk, it just makes it difficult to tell at a glance the proportion of used/available space, so this is an optional step but one I recommend (this step is also unnecessary if you're just using a single external drive). What we're going to do is write a little shell script in #bash. Open nano with the terminal with the command:
nano
Now insert the following code:
#!/bin/bash CUR_PATH=`pwd` ZFS_CHECK_OUTPUT=$(zfs get type $CUR_PATH 2>&1 > /dev/null) > /dev/null if [[ $ZFS_CHECK_OUTPUT == *not\ a\ ZFS* ]] then IS_ZFS=false else IS_ZFS=true fi if [[ $IS_ZFS = false ]] then df $CUR_PATH | tail -1 | awk '{print $2" "$4}' else USED=$((`zfs get -o value -Hp used $CUR_PATH` / 1024)) > /dev/null AVAIL=$((`zfs get -o value -Hp available $CUR_PATH` / 1024)) > /dev/null TOTAL=$(($USED+$AVAIL)) > /dev/null echo $TOTAL $AVAIL fi
Save the script as "dfree.sh" to /home/"yourlinuxusername" then change the ownership of the file to make it executable with this command:
sudo chmod 774 dfree.sh
Now open smb.conf with sudo again:
sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
Now add this entry to the top of the configuration file to direct Samba to use the results of our script when Windows asks for a reading on the pool's used/available/total drive space:
[global]
dfree command = home/"yourlinuxusername"/defree.sh
Save the changes to smb.conf and then restart Samba again with the terminal:
sudo systemctl restart smbd
Now there’s one more thing we need to do to fully set up the Samba share, and that’s to modify a hidden group permission. In the terminal window type the following command:
usermod -a -G sambashare “yourlinuxusername”
Then restart samba again:
sudo systemctl restart smbd
If we don’t do this last step, everything will appear to work fine, and you will even be able to see and map the drive from Windows and even begin transferring files, but you'd soon run into a lot of frustration. As every ten minutes or so a file would fail to transfer and you would get a window announcing “0x8007003B Unexpected Network Error”. This window would require your manual input to continue the transfer with the file next in the queue. And at the end it would reattempt to transfer whichever files failed the first time around. 99% of the time they’ll go through that second try, but this is still all a major pain in the ass. Especially if you’ve got a lot of data to transfer or you want to step away from the computer for a while.
It turns out samba can act a little weirdly with the higher read/write speeds of RAIDz arrays and transfers from Windows, and will intermittently crash and restart itself if this group option isn’t changed. Inputting the above command will prevent you from ever seeing that window.
The last thing we're going to do before switching over to our Windows PC is grab the IP address of our Linux machine. Enter the following command:
hostname -I
This will spit out this computer's IP address on the local network (it will look something like 192.168.0.x), write it down. It might be a good idea once you're done here to go into your router settings and reserving that IP for your Linux system in the DHCP settings. Check the manual for your specific model router on how to access its settings, typically it can be accessed by opening a browser and typing http:\\192.168.0.1 in the address bar, but your router may be different.
Okay we’re done with our Linux computer for now. Get on over to your Windows PC, open File Explorer, right click on Network and click "Map network drive". Select Z: as the drive letter (you don't want to map the network drive to a letter you could conceivably be using for other purposes) and enter the IP of your Linux machine and location of the share like so: \\"LINUXCOMPUTERLOCALIPADDRESSGOESHERE"\"zpoolnamegoeshere"\. Windows will then ask you for your username and password, enter the ones you set earlier in Samba and you're good. If you've done everything right it should look something like this:
Tumblr media
You can now start moving media over from Windows to the share folder. It's a good idea to have a hard line running to all machines. Moving files over Wi-Fi is going to be tortuously slow, the only thing that’s going to make the transfer time tolerable (hours instead of days) is a solid wired connection between both machines and your router.
Step Six: Setting Up Remote Desktop Access to Your Server
After the server is up and going, you’ll want to be able to access it remotely from Windows. Barring serious maintenance/updates, this is how you'll access it most of the time. On your Linux system open the terminal and enter:
sudo apt install xrdp
Then:
sudo systemctl enable xrdp
Once it's finished installing, open “Settings” on the sidebar and turn off "automatic login" in the User category. Then log out of your account. Attempting to remotely connect to your Linux computer while you’re logged in will result in a black screen!
Now get back on your Windows PC, open search and look for "RDP". A program called "Remote Desktop Connection" should pop up, open this program as an administrator by right-clicking and selecting “run as an administrator”. You’ll be greeted with a window. In the field marked “Computer” type in the IP address of your Linux computer. Press connect and you'll be greeted with a new window and prompt asking for your username and password. Enter your Ubuntu username and password here.
Tumblr media
If everything went right, you’ll be logged into your Linux computer. If the performance is sluggish, adjust the display options. Lowering the resolution and colour depth do a lot to make the interface feel snappier.
Tumblr media
Remote access is how we're going to be using our Linux system from now, barring edge cases like needing to get into the BIOS or upgrading to a new version of Ubuntu. Everything else from performing maintenance like a monthly zpool scrub (this is important!!!) to checking zpool status and updating software can all be done remotely.
Tumblr media
This is how my server lives its life now, happily humming and chirping away on the floor next to the couch in a corner of the living room.
Step Seven: Plex Media Server/Jellyfin
Okay we’ve got all the ground work finished and our server is almost up and running. We’ve got Ubuntu up and running, our storage array is primed, we’ve set up remote connections and sharing, and maybe we’ve moved over some of favourite movies and TV shows.
Now we need to decide on the media server software to use which will stream our media to us and organize our library. For most people I’d recommend Plex. It just works 99% of the time. That said, Jellyfin has a lot to recommend it by too, even if it is rougher around the edges. Some people run both simultaneously, it’s not that big of an extra strain. I do recommend doing a little bit of your own research into the features each platform offers, but as a quick run down, consider some of the following points:
Plex is closed source and is funded through PlexPass purchases while Jellyfin is open source and entirely user driven. This means a number of things: for one, Plex requires you to purchase a “PlexPass” (purchased as a one time lifetime fee $159.99 CDN/$120 USD or paid for on a monthly or yearly subscription basis) in order to access to certain features, like hardware transcoding (and we want hardware transcoding) or automated intro/credits detection and skipping. jellyfish features for free. On the other hand, Plex supports a lot more devices than Jellyfin and updates more frequently. That said Jellyfin's Android/iOS apps are completely free, while the Plex Android/iOS apps must be activated for a one time cost of $6 CDN/$5 USD. But that $6 fee gets you a mobile app that is much more functional and features a unified UI across Android and iOS platforms, the Plex mobile apps are simply a more polished experience. The Jellyfin apps are a bit of a mess and the iOS and Android versions are very different from each other.
Jellyfin’s actual media player itself is more fully featured than Plex's, but on the other hand Jellyfin's UI, library customization and automatic media tagging really pale in comparison to Plex. Streaming your music library is free through both Jellyfin and Plex, but Plex offers the PlexAmp app for dedicated music streaming which boasts a number of fantastic features, unfortunately some of those fantastic features require a PlexPass. If your internet is down, Jellyfin can still do local streaming, while Plex can fail to play files. Jellyfin has a slew of neat niche features like support for Comic Book libraries with the .cbz/.cbt file types, but then Plex offers some free ad-supported TV and films, they even have a free channel that plays nothing but Classic Doctor Who.
Ultimately it's up to you, I settled on Plex because although some features are pay-walled, it just works. It's more reliable and easier to use, and a one-time fee is much easier to swallow than a subscription. I do also need to mention that Jellyfin does take a little extra bit of tinkering to get going in Ubuntu, you’ll have to set up process permissions, so if you're more tolerant to tinkering, Jellyfin might be up your alley and I’ll trust that you can follow their installation and configuration guide. For everyone else, I recommend Plex.
So pick your poison: Plex or Jellyfin.
Note: The easiest way to download and install either of these packages in Ubuntu is through Snap Store.
After you've installed one (or both), opening either app will launch a browser window into the browser version of the app allowing you to set all the options server side.
The process of adding creating media libraries is essentially the same in both Plex and Jellyfin. You create a separate libraries for Television, Movies, and Music and add the folders which contain the respective types of media to their respective libraries. The only difficult or time consuming aspect is ensuring that your files and folders follow the appropriate naming conventions:
Plex naming guide for Movies
Plex naming guide for Television
Jellyfin follows the same naming rules but I find their media scanner to be a lot less accurate and forgiving than Plex. Once you've selected the folders to be scanned the service will scan your files, tagging everything and adding metadata. Although I find do find Plex more accurate, it can still erroneously tag some things and you might have to manually clean up some tags in a large library. (When I initially created my library it tagged the 1963-1989 Doctor Who as some Korean soap opera and I needed to manually select the correct match after which everything was tagged normally.) It can also be a bit testy with anime (especially OVAs) be sure to check TVDB to ensure that you have your files and folders structured and named correctly. If something is not showing up at all, double check the name.
Once that's done, organizing and customizing your library is easy. You can set up collections, grouping items together to fit a theme or collect together all the entries in a franchise. You can make playlists, and add custom artwork to entries. It's fun setting up collections with posters to match, there are even several websites dedicated to help you do this like PosterDB. As an example, below are two collections in my library, one collecting all the entries in a franchise, the other follows a theme.
Tumblr media
My Star Trek collection, featuring all eleven television series, and thirteen films.
Tumblr media
My Best of the Worst collection, featuring sixty-nine films previously showcased on RedLetterMedia’s Best of the Worst. They’re all absolutely terrible and I love them.
As for settings, ensure you've got Remote Access going, it should work automatically and be sure to set your upload speed after running a speed test. In the library settings set the database cache to 2000MB to ensure a snappier and more responsive browsing experience, and then check that playback quality is set to original/maximum. If you’re severely bandwidth limited on your upload and have remote users, you might want to limit the remote stream bitrate to something more reasonable, just as a note of comparison Netflix’s 1080p bitrate is approximately 5Mbps, although almost anyone watching through a chromium based browser is streaming at 720p and 3mbps. Other than that you should be good to go. For actually playing your files, there's a Plex app for just about every platform imaginable. I mostly watch television and films on my laptop using the Windows Plex app, but I also use the Android app which can broadcast to the chromecast connected to the TV. Both are fully functional and easy to navigate, and I can also attest to the OS X version being equally functional.
Part Eight: Finding Media
Now, this is not really a piracy tutorial, there are plenty of those out there. But if you’re unaware, BitTorrent is free and pretty easy to use, just pick a client (qBittorrent is the best) and go find some public trackers to peruse. Just know now that all the best trackers are private and invite only, and that they can be exceptionally difficult to get into. I’m already on a few, and even then, some of the best ones are wholly out of my reach.
If you decide to take the left hand path and turn to Usenet you’ll have to pay. First you’ll need to sign up with a provider like Newshosting or EasyNews for access to Usenet itself, and then to actually find anything you’re going to need to sign up with an indexer like NZBGeek or NZBFinder. There are dozens of indexers, and many people cross post between them, but for more obscure media it’s worth checking multiple. You’ll also need a binary downloader like SABnzbd. That caveat aside, Usenet is faster, bigger, older, less traceable than BitTorrent, and altogether slicker. I honestly prefer it, and I'm kicking myself for taking this long to start using it because I was scared off by the price. I’ve found so many things on Usenet that I had sought in vain elsewhere for years, like a 2010 Italian film about a massacre perpetrated by the SS that played the festival circuit but never received a home media release; some absolute hero uploaded a rip of a festival screener DVD to Usenet, that sort of thing. Anyway, figure out the rest of this shit on your own and remember to use protection, get yourself behind a VPN, use a SOCKS5 proxy with your BitTorrent client, etc.
On the legal side of things, if you’re around my age, you (or your family) probably have a big pile of DVDs and Blu-Rays sitting around unwatched and half forgotten. Why not do a bit of amateur media preservation, rip them and upload them to your server for easier access? (Your tools for this are going to be Handbrake to do the ripping and AnyDVD to break any encryption.) I went to the trouble of ripping all my SCTV DVDs (five box sets worth) because none of it is on streaming nor could it be found on any pirate source I tried. I’m glad I did, forty years on it’s still one of the funniest shows to ever be on TV.
Part Nine/Epilogue: Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr and Overseerr
There are a lot of ways to automate your server for better functionality or to add features you and other users might find useful. Sonarr, Radarr, and Lidarr are a part of a suite of “Servarr” services (there’s also Readarr for books and Whisparr for adult content) that allow you to automate the collection of new episodes of TV shows (Sonarr), new movie releases (Radarr) and music releases (Lidarr). They hook in to your BitTorrent client or Usenet binary newsgroup downloader and crawl your preferred Torrent trackers and Usenet indexers, alerting you to new releases and automatically grabbing them. You can also use these services to manually search for new media, and even replace/upgrade your existing media with better quality uploads. They’re really a little tricky to set up on a bare metal Ubuntu install (ideally you should be running them in Docker Containers), and I won’t be providing a step by step on installing and running them, I’m simply making you aware of their existence.
The other bit of kit I want to make you aware of is Overseerr which is a program that scans your Plex media library and will serve recommendations based on what you like. It also allows you and your users to request specific media. It can even be integrated with Sonarr/Radarr/Lidarr so that fulfilling those requests is fully automated.
And you're done. It really wasn't all that hard. Enjoy your media. Enjoy the control you have over that media. And be safe in the knowledge that no hedgefund CEO motherfucker who hates the movies but who is somehow in control of a major studio will be able to disappear anything in your library as a tax write-off.

When drawing your comic panels, sketches, and so on for humanoid characters, how do you handle anatomy?
I’d guess that it’s a pretty instinctual thing for you by this point after seeing all your (awesome, amazing, WOW I strive to draw as good as you do one day) art. I can’t manage to draw anything past a simple headshot lol, and even then I still struggle a good bit. I feel like I’ve gotten a lot better than I used to be though, and that’s definitely a good feeling.
Any helpful tips? It’s fine if you don’t have any though—I was just curious.
Tumblr media
Whether you are a begginer or more advanced at drawing references are always helpful, not necessarily meaning to copy them but rather to study them so you can figure out how the body works and you can pose it however you want more easily! I'm still not that good but with enough practice they can look pretty decent.
I feel you about drawing headshots only, i used to do that a lot too. You could try to thumbnail (basically make a little sketch) your idea so you see the whole picture rather than just focusing all your attention in a portrait.
Tumblr media
Iiiii hope this makes sense and hopefully helps? There're really good video tutorials on youtube that go WAY more into detail to tackle anatomy that have helped me a lot, Proko, Mark Brunet, Ethan Becker's channels are some that come to mind!

Several things: -LOVE your art, it’s amazing! Especially the one with Crowley and Aziraphale under the umbrella - which software do you use? Your art always look SO gorgeous (cheeky quote from GO right there lol) - how did you get so good at drawing? And thank you for encouraging other people to keep drawing and being so kind as I sometimes can’t help but compare my sketches to others and feel silly, but I guess it’s just a learning curve… Thank you so much for bringing your art to the world!😊
Thank you so much!!
I use Clip Studio Paint for drawing and Photoshop for small adjustments!
2. Haha thanks! Honestly...it's the hyperfixations. I managed to improve a lot in just a year because I've been drawing SO much cos there's so many shows and movies I became obsessed with that I wanted to create art for. So by drawing a lot I just naturally improved. For example these two Illustrations are just a year apart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I actually didn't actively try to improve, it's been a while since I did proper studies (I just don't really have the time for it between freelancing and art school), it just happened.
But I can absoluetly recommend going on YouTube and look for some art tutorials if you actively want to start improving! There's some channels that helped me so much back then:
moderndayjames
Incredible shape language and super insightful tutorials on all kinds of topics! I learned so much from him.
Ahmed Aldoori
So many awesome tutorials on so many different areas of art. Love it.
Marco Bucci
Incredible tutorials on color theory and understanding how color works in general! Learned SO much from him!
Sinix Design
The OG tutorials I began learning from. I watched his videos religiously as a teen. I adore his painterly style and adopted it in some way, haha.
Ethan Becker
This dude sometimes drops these tiny art tips that just completely blow my mind and that I adopt immedietly. He's super entertaining but also such a great teacher.
And I can also recommend checking out this book by James Gurney if you want to get better at colors!
And for anatomy I highly recommend the Morpho books!
But improvement doesn't only come from drawing a lot. A lot of the time I don't draw for a while and just study the world and artists around me and suddenly I improved when I get back to drawing. Don't ever overwork yourself to the point that you don't enjoy what you do anymore. Take breaks and listen to your body!
I learned to try and not compare myself to other artists, which helped a lot. Through conventions and social media I made so many lovely artist friends and realized how we're all struggling in a very similar way. A lot of us don't even really know what we're doing most of the time, haha. But we help each other out, it's such a wonderful community. I think when you're not actively part of the community it tends to feel like other, more successful artists are some kind of art gods that have perfected the craft and never struggle. But believe me, all the artists you admire go through rough times all. the. time. Sometimes what they do feels easy and natural, other times (more often than not) it feels like you have to try and learn how to walk all over again and you start to doubt your abilities. I personally go through that so many times.
So what I'm trying to say is that instead of comparing yourself to the artists you admire, learn from them instead. Ask questions, befriend fellow artists, study the artists you enjoy and just have fun with it!
And finally I thought it would be fun to share some of my horrendous Johnlock fanart from a decade ago for some motivation:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope my answer didn't overwhelm you, but I thoight it would be nice to give a more detailed answer!
Have a wonderful day and keep drawing! :)

Adele's Ramsay Living for TS3
2 years ago, on a fateful evening, I decided to convert this set to TS3. Although this had already been converted, I had my reasons to do my own conversion. Long story short, there were things that I didn't like and things that I liked.
One thing that I liked in the previous conversion was the effort to make the table tops glass. So I experimented with the Basic Shower which is supposed to have frosted glass. I don't know why EA use horrible textures; when you replace the NormalMap with a proper frosted glass texture it looks amazing.
So, using this knowledge as a base, I worked on the frosted glass table tops and after countless failures, I finally managed to have the effect I wanted. The key is having the right values for UVSelector parameters in the shader.
I also changed the textures for the bottle; tried to recreate it as a multiplier. Then made another version. Bottles are semi-transparent glass and recolourable. Don't ask me how I made them - I don't remember. But I if have to guess, there is this tutorial that I know of. The first part is about recolourable glass.
I wasn't feeling Adele's art for the painting. So, I used the recolours made by @timeparadoxsims. The artist is @len-yan and the art is amazing. If any of them want me to remove the painting from my downloads, I will do so but cry inwardly. 😢
I know people hate reading and just want to download but THIS IS IMPORTANT: Several items share textures. So you need to have the 'masters' in your game for the 'slaves' to work. I will group them and explain further.
The Loveseat is the master for the following objects: Armchair, Sofa, End Table (Solid Top), Coffee Table (Solid Top).
Loveseat, Armchair, Sofa -> 4 Channels - 2 presets with second being Adele's black overlay & metal and wood parts still CAStable.
Loveseat Polycount -> HLOD: 1746 MLOD: 702
Armchair Polycount -> HLOD: 1578 MLOD: 726
Sofa Polycount -> HLOD: 1962 MLOD: 1096
End Table, Coffee Table -> 3 Channels - 1 Preset
End Table Polycount -> HLOD: 710 MLOD: 444
Coffee Table Polycount -> HLOD: 1322 MLOD: 720
The Cushions for Loveseat is the master for following objects: The Cushion for Armchair, The Cushions for Sofa.
All Cushions -> 1 channel, 3 different multipliers - 5 Presets with 2 of them being overlays. You don't need moveobjects on to place them on their appropriate seating. If you use alt to place the seating you need to use alt to place the cushions as well.
Loveseat & Sofa Cushions Polycount -> HLOD: 160 MLOD: 80
Armchair Cushions Polycount -> HLOD: 80 MLOD: 40
The Glass Top End Table is the master for The Glass Top Coffee Table.
Both tables have 1 Channel & 1 Preset. Polys are same as the solid tops.
Decorative Bottles
Both have 1 Channel & 1 Preset.
Polycount -> HLOD: 242 MLOD: 119
Decorative Vase
3 Channels - 2 Presets
Polycount -> HLOD: 446 MLOD: 344
Large Frame Painting
1 Channel - 18 Presets
Polycount -> HLOD: 82 MLOD: 64
I've also included the collection file which comes with its own icon for easy recognition. As always, I might have missed something; if you find anything weird don't hesitate to tell me so I can try and fix it. I hope you'll enjoy this beautiful set by talented Adele. Happy simming.

Tumblr media
Since you were six years old, you had been very interested in the world of social networks. You liked the way people brought up various topics through the camera. From cooking recipes, to a video blog of daily life, to crafts, and even tutorials.
That's how, at the age of eleven, you asked your parents to help you open your own YouTube channel. You wanted people to know and listen to you, but not only that, you wanted to talk to them about your favorite topic: superheroes.
You were never really interested in becoming one since it seemed very dangerous but that didn't take away the great admiration you had for all of them.
At first your parents didn't agree with this, the internet was a dangerous place, especially for a little eleven year old girl. But seeing your great insistence and that it was something you really wanted, they agreed to help you as long as they supervised you. You really couldn't be happier.
In your first few videos, you showed off your favorite hero merch collections and talked about how much you admired them. They were actually terrible videos. You spoke very fast or had very long silences and because you didn't know how to edit, the videos remained as they had been recorded.
But over time you got better. By the time you turned sixteen, you already had a little more than ten million followers as you had worked hard to cover everything related to the heroes of the moment. You had gotten exclusive interviews with heroes like Best Jeanist, Edgeshot, Present Mic, and one with All Might.
That last one was what took you straight to the top. It had not been easy to get that interview but the man had been very kind answering the questions of a girl with big bright eyes.
That's how your parents gave you a professional camera along with audio equipment. They never really imagined you would go this far but they couldn't be more proud of you.
Later you managed to attend the AU sports tournament, where you interviewed some of the future heroes and took videos of the various games. Your audience loved the way you recounted the events and how you carried on so naturally.
May was the same place where you met the cutest guy in the whole wide world. Izuku Midoriya. Just seeing it was like having directly seen the beauty of the starry sky. It was the moment you decided that you would be his number one fan.
However, the years began to pass. You attended university to study communication and various companies sought you out because you already had more than 100 million subscribers on YouTube, more than 120 million on Instagram and around 65 million on tiktok.
It was rare that someone didn't know you when you went out on the street and it was even the same hero managers who looked for you to ask you to do an interview because of your great reach.
On the other hand, although you didn't know it, Izuku knew you. Since before the UA tournament, since he was a big fan of heroes, he was amazed with your content from when you still had only 5 subscribers, he was one of those 5, in addition to your parents, your aunt and your older cousin . And he never missed a single one of your videos.
He recognized you immediately when you attended the UA tournament and wanted to ask you for a photo but he was more shy and didn't dare to talk to you. You were so pretty and he had serious trouble talking to girls.
However, he never stopped following you and admiring your work. He thought it was really incredible everything you had achieved from such a young age and on your own.
Izuku's only regret was that his paths hadn't crossed again. He was now number one and he really wanted to meet you in person but he hadn't found the right opportunity.
Izuku even knew that you were a big fan of him since a lot of your videos talk about him and he didn't miss the way you got excited when you made a video exclusively for him.
However, their paths were about to cross forever.
That day you were going to do a live walk through the streets hoping to meet a hero. Those were some of your most popular videos right now, because although you were looking for heroes, you would also sometimes interview passersby to give them an opinion on their favorite hero. You even went out into the streets to play some games, asking questions about the heroes and giving some gifts to whoever answered correctly.
The fun thing was that it was all live, so you could answer a few questions while you were walking around and talk to your followers.
You were in an uncrowded park and you were getting ready to start recording.
All your team was ready, standing behind the camera.
Yoru, your cameraman gave you the signal that everything was ready and that's how he counted down before starting. You started with your typical greeting and at one point you already had two million views.
You started talking a bit about what you were doing today and how excited you were. You sent a couple of greetings and finally stopped looking at the chat on your cell phone when you saw a couple sitting on a bench.
"Hi!" you greeted them with great encouragement but they seemed confused by your sudden appearance.
“Oh, aren't you y/n? The one from that channel that talks about heroes” the girl asked you with a lot of emotion.
"I am the same. Would you like to play a game to win a surprise prize?”
The girl looked at her boyfriend with emotion.
"Of course we want"
The boy seemed nervous about the sudden appearance of a camera but seeing his girlfriend so happy about him cheered him up a bit.
"OK. Then I'll ask you ten questions about some heroes and if you answer all of them right, I'll give you something."
They both stood up and listened carefully to your questions.
On the other hand, Izuku was leaving his agency after a grueling mission. They had sent him to rest because his last mission had lasted three days and he had hardly slept a little. It was so that the number one hero put on a cap, sunglasses and a sweatshirt to go out without being recognized. He wanted to walk for a while to get some fresh air and go for something to eat.
He had barely gone a couple of blocks when his phone rang. He quickly took it to see what it was and smiled to see that it was a notification that you were live.
He hurried to put on his headphones and open the video. There you were, as radiant and happy as ever. However, something caught his attention. The place where you were seemed very familiar to him.
He looked around him trying to remember.
“I'm very sorry, you have failed four questions but don't worry. I'll give you these Dynamight commemorative cups.” Izuku heard your voice and looked at the screen again. Someone had handed you a pair of glasses with Bakugo's face printed on them and you handed them over to the couple.
After a short farewell, you continued on your way.
“There aren't many people in this place but while we wait to find someone who wants to play, let me tell you that I recently bought Deku's hoodie. The one that is limited edition. It took me a long time to get it but I did and you can't imagine how happy I am"
Izuku let out a chuckle as he looked at you. But then you turned around and he perfectly recognized that building. It was his agency, you were in the back park. It was true that it was not a very busy place. It was so that he hastened his pace to find you.
It didn't take more than five minutes and from afar he saw you and your entire team. He didn't know that so many people were helping you with these videos but he found it fascinating.
He put away his phone along with his earphones and began to walk casually to make it look like some kind of chance encounter.
And just as he planned, you came running up to him.
"Hello!" You greeted him with great encouragement “my name is y/n. Would you like to play a game with me?”
Izuku was silent for a moment. Luckily you hadn't recognized him yet but he couldn't stop thinking about how beautiful you were in person. The camera didn't do you any justice.
"Sure," he said after a moment, "what kind of game is it?"
You laughed a little.
"I will ask you ten questions about some heroes, if you answer all of them correctly I will give you a great gift"
He shrugged. He knew everything about most of the heroes, his whole life was dedicated to studying them and thanks to you he got much more information.
"Okay," he said.
That's how you started with the questions and you were surprised at how well he was answering them. You decided to save a really difficult one for last but he answered it without the biggest problem.
"Wow, you really know a lot about the heroes" you congratulated him "as a prize I'll give you a choice between three things. The first is a collectible figure of Deku, the number one hero. There are only six pieces of this figure. You can also choose double tickets to the superhero theme park. Or lastly, you can choose a jack-in-the-box that contains different merchandise from various heroes” you gave him a big smile.
Izuku couldn't be more captivated.
"Actually I'd like something else," he muttered nervously, scratching his forehead with a finger.
You looked at him curiously.
"What thing?"
“Maybe a photo? I'm actually a big fan of yours since I was a kid."
You blushed at his words but immediately began to laugh.
“Of course we can take a photo, come here. Give Yumi your cell phone and she can take some pictures of us” you told him.
The man took the cell phone from him and handed it to what he claims to be your assistant. However, he also took off his cap and glasses but at that moment you weren't looking at him because you started to send some greetings.
"I'm ready" Izuku said and that's when you looked at him. You almost fainted at that moment when you saw who it was.
It took you a full minute to react but even so you started babbling.
"Hero Deku" you muttered after a moment.
He let out an embarrassed laugh.
"Hello"
You took a deep breath and stood next to him so your assistant, who had a huge smile from ear to ear, could take some photos. You quickly realized that Izuku didn't touch you in any way. His arms remained away from your body at all times. At present there were no longer men as chivalrous as him. If you already loved him before, now you loved him even more.
When the go-gos finished, it was your turn to feel embarrassed.
"Hmmm... Hero Deku, would you allow me an interview?"
"Of course!"
You quickly looked for the notes application on your phone because you had a list of all the questions you wanted to ask Deku if you ever had him in front of you.
It was actually a very long interview and your views increased more and more. You realized how easy it was to talk to Deku and the man had so many things to say that you didn't realize two hours passed. It wasn't until the end of the interview that you realized they had broken a viewing record.
"Thank you very much to everyone who is watching us right now" you said excitedly and Izuku next to you "and many thanks to the hero Deku for giving us this interview. It was magnificent. Hero Deku, would you like to say something to the public? We have broken a record and right now more than fifty million people are watching us live”
Izuku looked surprised but the camera focused on him and you held out your microphone.
"Well, I'm not quite sure. Cameras always make me nervous. However, I want to thank you all for the support you have given me throughout my career. I promise to always protect you."
You smiled excitedly.
“Would you like to say goodbye with me?” You asked him. Your cheeks had started to ache from the big smile that hadn't gone away.
"I would love that"
They both looked at the camera with a serious face and pointed their index finger.
"See you next time" they spoke at the same time and made a movement as if their hand was a gun.
The live ended, your team of five started clapping, and finally approached Izuku for a photo or autograph. He very gladly agreed but he still wanted to be alone with you for a moment. He wanted to ask for your number or if he felt brave enough a date.
"I'll go put all this in the van" Yoru said, carrying a couple of suitcases in each hand.
“Thank you all very much for your work today” you spoke out loud and little by little your team withdrew.
"We'll wait for you in the van" Yumi asked you this time.
You looked at Deku and then at your assistant. You immediately denied.
"No, I think I prefer to walk"
The woman let out a big smile as she raised and lowered her eyebrows. But she just gave you your bag and left with the others.
The sky was already dark, you had started recording quite late so it was normal for it to be like this. The little boy's lights came on and you looked at Deku.
"Thank you very much for the interview. I'm really a big fan of yours and it's an honor to have met you."
Izuku blushed.
"It's no big deal. Also, I'm also a big fan of yours. I've watched all your videos since you started at eleven and even though you deleted many of those videos, I still remember them."
It was your turn to feel like your face was burning.
"Well, then... I think I'd better go."
"Is it alright if I accompany you?"
You looked at him with big bright eyes.
"It’s okay, thank you"
-•
It was a year later. You were in your studio doing a live Q&A. You wanted a quiet live so you chose to record in the morning when there were a little less people.
However, the chat filled up immediately.
“Today we will read some questions from Instagram. Many want to know how my collection has grown, so I will show you some things, also last night I received a big box with new merchandise that I ordered a month ago”
Your background had completely changed, they were no longer those stuffed animals and dolls from when you started, now there were several glass cabinets full of figures and merchandise of various heroes. In addition, there were some neon lights that adorned each side of the room. That morning they were pink.
You started answering some questions and stood up when asked about the new Shoto figure you had mentioned in your Instagram stories. Also about the Red Riot cap and Headphone Jack headphones.
"Honey, can you bring the box that arrived last night?" You yelled as you put the giant Lemillion figure back on.
‘When will you show us your boyfriend?’
'I have a suspicion that his boyfriend is someone very important and that's why she doesn't want to show it'
'We all want to meet the person who stole the hearts of our y/n'
You read the chat with a smile.
“I'm sorry, but you know I'd rather keep my personal life out of this. But I promise if that guy proposes to me, I'll show him when we get married” you started laughing.
Someone knocked softly on the door and you stood up to open it. Izuku appeared with a big smile and a huge box in his arms. You stood on your toes to give him a quick kiss and the man set the box on the floor.
"Thank you, Izu" you murmured, giving him another kiss on the lips.
"No problem honey"
Izuku went straight to his shared room and continued watching your video. He really was in love with you and was already planning how to ask you to marry him.

He Xuan a niche mukbang youtuber suddenly gets an invite to do a collab video by a super popular influencer who also happens to be his online crush!
How will he survive this?!
Click more for full plot!
Modern AU Youtubers - (M/F Flavor Beefleaf)
He Xuan and Shi Qingxuan are Youtubers, the former runs a mukbang and cooking channel and goes by the handle name BlackWater but fans call him Mingyi, his color preferences (and home decor) are mostly in black.
He has pet piranhas, he talks about them most of the time while streaming the cooking segment. His favorite is King Crab Legs; it is often featured in his mukbang videos.
He Xuan is super picky with food, some isn't up to his taste so he learned how to prepare it, hence the cooking channel segment. He also accepts requests from his fans on which food he’ll make next because hey more food to discover and eat for him.
He has a decent following but not that popular, he’s been a niche youtuber for 2 years now.
While the latter is a super popular youtuber who goes by the handle name Windy, the make up master she runs a makeup tutorial channel where she also shares her skin and hair care regimen.
Also does some daily life vlogs occasionally. Shi Qingxuan has a million subscribers and followers on all her socials, she is sponsored by various companies (sometimes her brother’s business partners) and does product giveaways.
She shows a peppy persona which her fans love, always wears fashionable outfits and takes a lot of selfies. She has an older brother who is a business tycoon but he doesn’t support her vlogging work but there’s nothing he can do about it.
Hua Cheng is He Xuan's agent (and debt collector), they knew each other for quite a long time now and can communicate by facial expressions,
Also the piranhas are the reason why He Xuan is in debt with Hua Cheng (that and his equipment are all sponsored by Hua Cheng) and Xie lian is SQX manager and agent, they were best friends back in college.
Fun Fact:
SQX text with lots of emojis a text from her ain't complete without those, if there's no emoji that means it's serious or she is going through something. He xuan text dry one word responses.
Xie lian would probably types so formally with complete sentences with no grammatical error, that's why his text ends up so essay-like
Hua Cheng is full of shortcuts sometimes with numbers.
He Xuan was doing one of his live mukbang when suddenly he chokes on food (it became a viral meme btw), it's because he got a certain notif that a certain popular user followed him so he got shocked and choked on his food. He was happy that one of his fave bloggers followed him back.
They sometimes interact in the comments section. SQX enjoys his vids and often comments on it
Sqx: omg!!!! 🤩🤩🤩 thats so awesome how did you do that?!?!?!!? (゜ロ゜)!!ヽ(゚д゚ヽ)(ノ゚д゚)ノ!! You truly are amazing ming-xiong (*/□\*)
Hx: Thanks
Their agents suggested that they do a collab video so SQX being the way she is super friendly and open to new things reached out first and sent him a DM to invite him into doing a collab with her
where He Xuan will voice over SQX makeup routine and SQX will do the spicy wing challenge (cooked by He Xuan). He Xuan accepted of course it's not everyday that your favorite youtuber (and crush) invites you to do a collaboration with them.
The funny thing is He xuan was SQX fan first and he saw her as a rival vlogger, kinda hate her at first because he found her peppy persona annoying but after a while he got endeared to it
so when she offered to do a collab he jumped for joy all over the room before sitting down and sending a very dry OK to her in response to the collab offer. Hua Cheng just gave him a side eye for being a weirdo.
It was their first time meeting in real life and SQX thought that HX is handsome in person and had a “Oh no he is hot!!” moment. She actually found one of HX videos while she was trying to find food recipes on the internet.
Her brother is on a business trip and XL was sleeping over but being a terrible cook and calamity of the kitchen she took matters into her own hands to avoid food poisoning (never again she swears)
Hua Cheng trolls HX all the time by introducing him or calling HX to SQX as “your biggest fan” or “your secret admirer” and HX denies all allegations with a straight face "I like her a normal amount, I'm not a crazed fan"
but got worried if sqx hated him afterwards because of how he seemed cold in their first meeting.
They are about to shoot their first video collab which is the Spicy wing Challenge, he wants to impress her with his cooking skills.
SQX watches Ming-xiong (she calls him that) prepare and cook the food and the progression of her reaction from heart eyes (because c'mon have you seen him he is hot, such an eye candy and preparing food just for her) to
Oh shit I'm gonna die because of the amount of spice being put into the chicken. Basically she went from (🤩😍🙂😰😨😱) because of the pure hellish torture that awaits her.
He Xuan wants to prepare his favorite dish for the girl of his dreams but didn’t know her shit spice tolerance level and his only taste tester is hua cheng who has dead taste buds who likes the lunch that XL prepared an ominous violet looking food(?)
Off cam
Xl: here san lang do you want to have a taste *ominous looking violet goop*
San lang: i would be honored gege
Sqx: NO! WAIT DON--
HC: *looking fine and even liked it* it's very delicious gege
Sqx: what the?? He must have a stomach made of steel
Hx: *nods in agreement*
She was gonna go easy with HX but then the spicy wings incident happened so she went with a Goth makeup routine as revenge for making her eat Mt. Tonglu level spicy food but
she made HX too pretty and it went viral. Viewers got a moment of internal confusion over live chat because of the viral vid HX got a lot of subscribers.
Afterwards they do a lot of collabs and she posts their selfies on insta (dates under the guise of collab vid shooting). Also while shopping SQX buys them silly earrings, Fish bone for HX and leaf for her.
People started to wonder if they were because of their insane chemistry, their fans started calling them beefleaf (they may also use that as titles for their collab videos, SQX idea because she likes the name and emoji for it.)
It's actually their agents who are dating now not them, NOPE NEVER
also before Hualian dated during one of the “double date” aka collab vid shootin. They also do Q & A livestream
Question: Are you two dating?
SQX: Nope, this is my GOOD FRIEND Ming-xiong
HX: we are not friends
SQX: Ming xiong you are so mean!!!
HX: I don't want to be friends with you
SQX: WWWHYYYYYYY??!?!?! AFTER ALL WE'VE BEEN THROUGH??!?!?!?
Viewers: *Eye emoji* our ship is sailing
viewers can see what HX means but Ms. Windy cant, you have a long way to go Ming-xiong……Fighting!
He Xuan also asked XL what he liked about HC but the way XL describe Hua Cheng is soo….makes him like a dream boat so HX is confused if they are still talking about the same person…
Also he xuan being in denial of his feelings he tries to take an online quiz to find out that he is indeed in love with SQX
Windy went on a short hiatus because one anonymous user (Reverend of Empty Words) kept harassing her and leaves negative comments on all her videos, she tried to ignore it but it became too much.
HX will make a video called “Reading Windy’s Hate Comments and Proving Haters Wrong) he will roast so hard, he did this when SQX was down in the dumps because of that anonymous user.
XL sents the YT link to SQX who is avoiding social media at the moment to cheer her friend up. The anti was mass reported and taken down.
After the reverend's empty words fiasco, she starts seeing him as a man because he supported and defended her and was there for her at her lowest.
She now changed his contact name for HX it is now Ming-xiong ❤️❤️❤️
Cue in SQX vid series of “how to seduce your good friend” plus throw in how to mix and match outfit and make up tutorial in there too but it becomes a running gag that Shi wudu cockblocks them and it's not staged.
They shoot over SQX house cuz she has a bigger kitchen for another cooking segment but ofc SQX has a different goal here, she asks HX to teach her how to cook so there are plenty of being in close contact as he guides her how to use a knife.
She thinks she is the one being seduced instead, beefleaf fans are eating it up and request they do more domestic stuff. The beefleaf fandom watches old videos to see who liked who first so like when they got to that origin vid of that meme of his.
They'll probably see the live chat on the side of the video and see the "coincidence" and right timing of when he choked. Blackwater fans thought it's because he ate to fast back then BUT OH BOI IT WAS ACTUALLY WHEN BEEFLEAF STARTED. It'll probably be named beefleaf day.
SQX likes reading their meta and analysis of the beefleaf videos and how He Xuan subtle hints, SQX may not notice but the fans do and they are great source of info for SQX but ofc she needs affirmation from HX own mouth because all of these are fan speculations by the end of the day.
Only their agents know this but Beefleaf have each other as their phone wallpaper (candid cooking photo of HX for SQX and SQX Selfie for HX) its because they always caught them staring and do a pining sigh at their phones multiple times a day.
Ever since they started the cooking show with the both of them, HX always wears the “kiss the cook" apron he got from HC as a prank gift.
SQX thinks about it a lot should she be straight forward and just go for it but then again she doesn’t want their current relationship ruined just cuz she read his signals wrong…
Hualian are the mods of the beefleaf fan page. Crimson rain makes merch and scrap collector provides scarily accurate meta about beefleaf, All in the name of supporting their friend /investment. Xl gives SQX beefleaf merch pretending that he found it at cons.
Also people are starting to wonder if HC and HX are just business partners or friends, they bicker like siblings but when asked if "Are you sure you two aren't friends?" They just deny it and just say that their relationship is based on money/business.
HC claims that He Xuan has debts to pay to him, which is true. He has to lay the cost of the apartment studio, camera equipment, Food ingredients, restaurant bills and pet care that He Xuan owes him.
XL and SQX think that HC and HX are besties.
During the pining era sqx tries to be proactive and make her feelings obvious hoping that he xuan will take a hint. She also sought the advice of xie lian and hua cheng about this and created a 10 step confession plan, psyched herself up and tried to encourage herself. Prepared for it and all.
She is going all in!! She is getting her man and confess her feelings!!! And then they will date and be happy if not well she will call xie lian and ask to buy 2 tubs of ice cream while she marathons romcom films but NO NEGATIVITY HERE only good things SHE WILL SUCCEED she swears it.
So here they are grocery shopping for their next vid, they are picking out ingredients (so domestic she thinks it'll be even better once she nabs him and becomes her boyfriend)
she hopes that he xuan notices her outfit and makeup and new perfume something gentle cuz he likes those but all she got is a deadpan stare
(on the inside he xuan is internal screaming like is there something up today why is she all dressed up and extra pretty does this woman know what she is doing to his heart pls have mercy on this poor man's soul)
the confession is so normal and sudden, she was planning to like after grocery shopping they go out and eat and she will confess at this beautiful park after they left the groceries in the car.
Okay grocery shopping done. Check
Retouched makeup check and eyeliner is on point
Finding the right moment. Working on it. So while in the parking lot loading up their groceries in the car,
she asked he xuan if they could go to the park and like walk around for a lil while she said she found it while browsing on the internet and she wants to check it out for their other collab vids if its a nice place and he xuan just suddenly goes, "sure thing babe"
*record scratch* hold on rewind did she hear right??? he xuan doesnt use pet names and he called her babe?! WHAT IS HAPPENING!?!?!
Sqx: wait...what did you just call me?? say it again
He xuan: say what again?
Sqx: dont play dumb! You called me babe!!
He xuan: yeah and?
*sqx turns into a goldfish due to her being shocked speechless
Sqx: i.. huh-- what?? Omg?? Wait hold on give me a minute you want me to be your babe???? Did i hear right???
Hx: you heard right....
Sqx: 0////////0
Hx:I'm sorry if you don't like it we could pretend i -
Sqx: WAIT JUST A MINUTE I DIDN'T SAY I DID NOT LIKE IT I WAS JUST SHOCKED! And btw yes ill be your babe
Then theyll hug or kiss him on the cheek shyly
Also While they are hugging
Sqx: you meeaaaniieeeee, i made a ten step confession plan and tried to find a park to set up the romantic atmosphere but you beat me to it in the middle of a parking lot too!!!!!
Hx: *chuckles*
Now that they are dating they are contemplating whether or not they should announce it right away to their fans but at the same time they just want to keep it to themselves, so they decided to just tell the fans later but…they are really bad at hiding it…
So they are doing one of their cooking videos again (it's one of the most requested videos of the beefleaf fans they love gow domestic it is and all) so he xuan cooking segments always feature sqx now and the kiss the cook apron (but this time she will kiss the cook)
So he xuan be like pass me the salt so sqx does and he be like thanks hun and sqx kisses him on the cheek you're welcome with a bright smile.
Off cam he xuan cooks for sqx so this became a normal thing for them that they forgot they are doing it live so they froze for a moment and saw the chat went wild
"Omfg did you see that they kissed"
"Noooo waaaayyyy"
"Incoherent screaming"
"Askgheulgjodafaidj6akdsy"
"My ship is canon!!!!!!!!!"
Then beefleaf be like hahah well there's no use hiding it now, he xuan hugs her from behind as she says
"Yes beefleaf is now canon"
-THE END-

DDADDS as Content Creators (headcanons)
I don't know why I had this idea, but here you go!
have some content-creating DDADDS :3
Brian Harding
technically Brian doesn’t have a channel. Daisy just records him and posts it to TikTok.
it is all camping, fishing, and general outdoors videos. except the lawncare videos, which are actual tutorials.
Daisy actually makes these tiktoks look really nice and high-quality, even if Brian is not that good of an actor. he’s trying his best, but it actually works. surprisingly, she never really shows up on camera. it’s all Brian here
has a lot of fans of his fishing for… aesthetic reasons. yeah, aesthetic reasons. the aesthetic reason being that he is shirtless in almost all of them. and that he is obviously very confident in his body.
his lawncare videos get the same amount of views, but for vastly different reasons. all of the lawn-caring dads enter his TikTok comment section whenever he posts and they either compliment him or start discourse on which weedwhacker is the best.
surprisingly, Brian has some of the most followers out of all of the dads. he even ends up doing some lawn equipment giveaways.
Craig Cahn
it’s all fitness all day with Craig. he has a TikTok and an Instagram.
he posts a lot about his business, softball coaching, healthy recipes, and once again fitness.
he has fallen for the “can you fitness dick in your mouth” joke at least 12 times by now. he keeps falling for it. help him please
completely avoids drama not only to keep away extra stress, but also because there’s literally nothing you can really yell at him for. unless you hate his recipes
probably has a series where he tries out a bunch of popular healthy recipes and rates them on a 5-star scale.
he has a LOT of followers for a LOT of reasons. good video quality, good recipes, he’s entertaining, a good father, and all of the softball moms\dads love him.
Damien Bloodmarch
plenty of Victorian recipes, fashion, and general taxidermy. he’s got a Youtube channel and a Tiktok, but he’s more comfortable with the YouTube format.
he edits all of his videos and he’s Really, Really good at it to the point where he offers to edit videos for other dads. so he’s both a YouTuber and a freelance editor.
probably gets the most sponsorships out of all the dads
has a very welcoming and kind community that he interacts with over Tumblr and Reddit. he has a Twitter but he just doesn’t use it
his space is 100% drama-free. unless you are arguing about historical accuracy.
he has an entire series rating the historical accuracy of anything Victorian; from clothes to books to recipes and more. it doesn’t stop. he will post these forever.
he manages to make a LOT of money off of this, to the point where he gets to quit his IT job altogether and gets to have more fun.
Damien really loves getting recognized by fans and always expresses his appreciation in his videos whenever he can.
Lucien shows up in his food videos sometimes, but only to eat the food and to mildly bully him on-camera. the comments call him low-rent Gerard Way and he does Not appreciate it.
Hugo Vega
he has a small YouTube channel that consists of book reviews and nothing else. until he eventually gains more popularity, that is.
there is very, very little editing on the earlier videos and it shows. Ernest refuses to help him. all of his students refuse to help him. dadsona cannot help him. please help him. he cannot edit
he uploads very rarely (once a month, maybe twice during summer months), but his videos are actually very well-scripted and well-performed. sometimes Ernest comes in to purposefully ruin his recording session, and it works every time.
eventually he somehow manages to bag Damien as his editor, and the video quality goes up significantly from there. Damien even buys Hugo better equipment and gives him advice.
he started out covering just older lesser-known works from the 18th century. somewhere along the way, he made a single video on poorly written YouTuber books and it Exploded in popularity. that’s when he started shifting towards being a bit more of a commentary channel, with Damien’s technological help of course.
some people have called him “the old librarian version of Kurtis Conner” and he doesn’t know what it means until he looks up Kurtis Conner. then he understands.
somehow he becomes well-versed in internet discourse and makes videos about it, with full-length video essays of a pretty high quality.
he doesn’t forget his literature roots, though — he still makes plenty of content on literature and art history, even if they make less views. he enjoys doing it and that’s what matters.
he always blushes when he gets recognized in public and he is way too polite to turn down a signature or photo. one time a wrestler he likes recognized him and he almost fainted from pure joy.
Joseph Christiansen
by far the most controversial of all. (\j its Robert)
just kidding it’s all baking. his TikTok is just a gay tradwife’s dream.
the man is just trying to be hip with the kids. he even dresses up as Ken after the Barbie movie premiere and makes a cake about it. this is actually his most popular video and it gets millions of views & likes
his community is Christian. mainly because he’s Christian. just that sometimes he attracts the mean Christians. he gets a lot of hate comments from them but he just deletes them and moves on with minimal worry or stress
besides that, his community is pretty supportive and full of a combo Christian mothers and Christian queers. most of his audience are 25+ but there is a sizeable portion that is under the age of 25, so technically he got what he wanted
the videos are of a fine quality, even though he’s not really an editor. like everyone else who can’t edit themselves, he just asks Damien very nicely to edit for him
he shows his kids in videos semi-often, but it’s really just because they either mess with him while he’s recording and he doesn’t know how to edit it out, or he has them try the food afterwards. it’s a win-win scenario for the kids
Mary refuses to show her face in any of the videos whatsoever and steers clear of the kitchen whenever Joseph is recording in there.
the kids at church all know him from his TikTok but either say nothing about it or actively make fun of him for it.
Mat Sella
posts baking and recipes to TikTok, along with promotion stuff for The Coffee Spoon. it was Carmensita’s idea and he just ran with it because it’s fun for both of them
Carmensita is the one behind the camera (or tripod) while Mat bakes, and sometimes she appears on camera when she wants to try the food. Pablo helps him edit and do other promotional videos. sometimes Pablo is seen helping in the videos too.
he always gets really anxious after posting it but the second that the positive comments and likes roll in, he’s completely relaxed.
any food he bakes on TikTok he sells at the Coffee Spoon, so it’s actually extremely useful at getting people to come and buy stuff. eventually people are mostly coming over for the food but also order a coffee because “may as well”
has a very positive comments section that consists mostly of people really wanting to go to Massachusetts just to order the food and give him a kiss on the forehead.
he has been called a babygirl at least twice and he has no clue what it means. Pablo and Carmensita refuse to tell him.
has done multiple collabs with Joseph and Damien, along with sharing tips with them. they’re all internet besties.
is recognized pretty often, and he’s always in-between being an anxious mess and being a really cool chill guy about it.
Robert Small
by far the least consistent and most unhinged out of all of them, for obvious reasons. he’s a TikToker solely because the format is easy for him, but he also just uploads all of his content straight to YouTube
he either posts 5 times a day or twice a month. there’s no in between.
it will be of the most random shit. one day you get him rating brands of whiskey, and next week there’s a 12 part series of him going cryptid hunting. all of it is unedited and of very poor audio quality if he’s outside
he probably visited the Goatman’s Bridge after the Buzzfeed Unsolved and also bullied the Goatman and took the bridge for himself. the only difference is that he’s drunkenly yelling at the Goatman and calling him a bitch.
he’s always at least a little intoxicated in all of his videos, and some cases he is fully drunk. he doesn’t really put an act on for the camera, he’s really just himself, completely unfiltered.
90% of his YouTube videos are either age-restricted, demonetized, or both. some of his TikToks get taken down but he always reuploads them because he is a very stubborn old man and he refuses to stop.
Robert probably has a maximum of 200 followers. he does not respond to his comments unless someone insults his whiskey or pineapple on pizza. he also responds to weird internet slang.
he doesn’t get any sponsorships. and he never will. and he doesn’t want them. the sponsorships also don’t want him. he has made multiple videos where he goes on rants about ads and how much he hates capitalism.
whenever someone in his TikTok comments calls him a blorbo he responds with a video of his honest reaction. he is confused. they also call him a poor little meow meow. he is confused. they also call him babygirl. he is still confused.
when he gets recognized in public he has no clue how to act. mainly because he very, very rarely gets recognized. his own neighbors are surprised when they find out he is a content creator.
eventually he will get recognized more, because his content is a comedy goldmine, albeit very unintentional. most of his fans are actually Gen Z, because his humor fits in pretty damn well. he is always slightly unsettled when teenagers recognize him because sometimes he forgets that young people do in fact watch his content. even though most of his viewers are half his age or less.
eventually Val finds his channel and dies laughing and confronts him about it (post reconnecting), because she never knew about it and she wants to be in those videos too because it’s fun. just some father & daughter fun: getting drunk and taking a walk in the forest being silly.
--
I actually really love doing these headcanons and i hope you do too :3

How I Manage my Mods for Big Patch Updates!
Big updates can be overwhelming when you have a lot of mods, so I thought I would make a guide about how I keep track of things with google sheets!
As always, remember to back up your saves and take your mods folder out before you update! (taking the folder out is not necessary, but a good safeguard). Playing with unconfirmed and not updated mods after an update is at your own risk! If you want to wait until your mods are updated, turn off automatic updates and play in offline mode.
Even if you don't want to do a google sheet, it's still good to know where you can find your mod updates!
Tumblr media
Resource List:
Deaderpool Discord Server (public server)
Google Sheets (you can use any excel-based program but this is what I use and it's free) I'll be giving some tips but this is not a google sheets tutorial.
Scarlet/Sims VIP Broken/Updated Mod List (edit: Scarlet changed it so the list is not on google sheets but displayed on her site. It's the same link and you can still search with ctrl + f so nothing has changed in this tutorial. I use the filtered views list).
First off: I will always recommend sorting your mods into folders. At the very least, a separate folder for your mods away from your cc. Remember that script mods should only be at most, one folder deep. This is how I personally organize my mods. Note that they all start with "mods" so they all appear together alphabetically. I group big mods on their own and smaller mods into these categories.
Tumblr media
2. The first thing to do is to create a template sheet. This will be a list of your mods formatted in sheets that you can duplicate when an update happens. If you have any new mods, add them here and not to your update sheets. I do not include every single mod. The mods I include are my script mods and large tuning mods that are updated by their creators. Some mods, like for example the no blu by luumia, are small enough to not worry about and do not receive compatibility confirmations so I leave them out.
3. This is how my template is formatted:
Tumblr media
When an update happens, I will cross reference my sheet to the Scarlet's List and input whether it is broken, compatible or updated. Once a broken mod is updated, I will change the status accordingly.
The creator's name comes first so that way if you decide to sort the sheet A to Z they will be grouped by creator. (You'll see why later). Do this by left clicking on column A. If you sort by A to Z the column titles will be sorted too, so freeze that row.
Edit: I also recently added a column for the links to the mod pages! I suggest wrapping the text in that column to keep it neat.
4. The Scarlet/Sims VIP Broken/Updated Mod list is updated in real time by tons of contributors and modders. Additionally, you can look for updates regularly with Scarlet's weekly update and changes list (found through the same link above) or with the mod news channel in Deaderpool's Server, which also gives updates. For now we'll only be looking at the main patch list.
There's tons of mods on here, but don't be alarmed! You can simply search the mod list with Ctrl + F. I recommend searching by creator so there is no confusion on the mods' names.
When an update happens, I will go down the list on my new, duplicated sheet and search for the creators on the Scarlet's List. I then label it on my sheet whether it is listed as broken, compatible or updated. Once a broken mod is updated, I will change its status to "updated".
Mods are listed as "unknown" if their status hasn't been confirmed any which way. After some time, I'd say a small "unknown" mod is safe to go ahead with, but do that at your own risk. I mainly am looking out for the big script mods, many small tuning mods I am willing to give the go ahead if it is still unknown after my major mods are confirmed.
I recommend sitting down and reviewing your mods after a day or so has past after the patch, or you can keep up and regularly update it with Deaderpool's server. You can also use google sheets on your phone for convenience.
Optional:
I do some conditional formatting as well to keep things more clear on my mods sheet. This is optional, but I do recommend it! Do this all on your template sheet so you do not have to redo it later on.
First, I go to Format>Alternating colors to make the rows clear from one another.
Go to Format>Conditional Formatting and select "add another rule".
Click on the top left square as shown here to select the entire sheet. The data range popup will appear. The data range should be something like 1:1000 (or whatever number of rows you have). Click ok.
Tumblr media
Choose "is equal to" for your format rules. Type in the one of the status names into "Value or Formula", I'm using "compatible". Select the color you wish the cell to highlight with. You can choose additional formatting styles as well.
Tumblr media
Repeat for "updated" and "broken" using different colors for all. I use red for broken, green for compatible, and yellow for updated. I leave mods that are "unknown" blank. Now when you type one of the status names into its column, the cell will highlight the respective color!

Note
heya! i just went through your music making guide and it's great, but i still feel fairly illiterate, lol (not your fault, just a whole new world for me). one thing i hoped to find there but didn't, is how i might set up an actual keyboard (i have a yamaha psr-e373 in case it's significant) to work with reaper. i'd like two scenarios to be possible: to supply just the notes via kb (so use it as midi input, i guess?) while using VST from PC like in your examples; and use VST from kb itself (because the piano on it is flawless and there are quite a few other decent ones too). the kb itself has a "local on/off" function that lets you switch between these scenarios. i managed to set it up for cakewalk following a video tutorial, but no luck figuring out the settings in reaper. can you help? like, if you use a kb yourself, could you screenshot the relevant settings and show me?
many thanks!
i can try! ive got like 2 midi devices set up (i use the akai mpk mini & the korg nanokey2) that i use for the usual melodic walking around, chords themselves i put together on mindful harmony & then import that midi in & adjust as needed
for reaper what you want to do is have reaper detect your keyboard as a midi in device. make sure your keyboard is connected to your computer via USB (idk what itll be detected as but im assuming itll pop up as PSR for you) and then do the following:
Options > Preferences > Configure MIDI Devices
Tumblr media
my nanokey2 isnt plugged in currently but you can see that it's ready to go under MIDI Inputs and MIDI Outputs for whenever i do plug it in. yours should pop up here; right click both and make sure theyre set to Enable, then hit Apply and OK.
reaper is now primed to recognize your MIDI track as input. what you need to do now is arm your specific track to accept MIDI input
Tumblr media
on the left the red O button is the record button, and if you leftclick it it'll start receiving input. rightclick it to change what kind of input it accepts - change it to Input: MIDI > Virtual MIDI keyboard > All Channels like so:
Tumblr media
then click the Record button again so it lights up to activate it on your track. now we've told reaper that itll only be accepting sound input from your keyboard. last thing you need to do is tell reaper what kind of sound it's going to make, because without that information it just wont make any sound, so get a noise-making VST ready (your lovely piano VST that you mentioned!) which is FX button > Add > pick your sound VST
Tumblr media

hello boobers of tumblr! because it seems like our streamer never does it, i wanted to give you all a refresher on twitch prime !
if you're unaware, if you (or a family member) pays for an amazon prime account you have access to one free twitch subscription a month! all you have to do is link your amazon account that has those prime benefits to your twitch account, and then select "prime gaming" when you subscribe. its easy!
this is a tutorial for my desktop friends, but its fairly similar in the apps i assume!)
first, go to https://gaming.amazon.com/home and log into your amazon account
Tumblr media
once signed in, open the drop down menu and here you'll have the ability to sign into your twitch account! i don't know if it will say "manage twitch accounts" or "add twitch accounts", because mine is already linked here, but it should be in around the same spot.
Tumblr media
(i don't want to go through the process of unlinking and relinking mine so i'm pretty sure this is how it looks, sorry if not!)
once linked, go to the streamer you want to sub to! (this is for ranboo fans, but if you want to sub to someone else the process is the same!)
Tumblr media
the purple button here will say "subscribe" ! click on it, and open the menu. once in the menu, there will be a small box to tick to use your prime gaming subscription (sorry for no screenshot, again i cant undo my sub so i cant give an example sadly)
tick that box, scroll down and hit subscribe!
its completely free, and gives money from amazon to ranboo every time you use it! just remember after a month, you have to resubscribe manually. benefits include not getting pre-roll ads and using sub-exclusive emotes!
if you go on to link your twitch account to your discord account, you can even access ranboo's sub-exclusive "ranmail" discord channels in his server, where he occasionally posts!
if you don't have an account that pays for amazon prime, ask a friend or family member if they do, and if they would mind if you linked your account! its a benefit that many people don't know they have, and using it costs nothing!
that's all. happy boobing!

“don’t forget to like and subscribe!”
genshin youtubers au
characters included: childe, xiangling, nahida, 5wirl (aether, venti, xiao, kazuha & heizou), & kaeya
Childe (can be read as platonic or romantic)
100% a sweaty gaming streamer
he unironically owns a minecraft themed bed im SORRY
is really sweet to the fan artists in his community and hypes them up IMMENSELY
would wear a maid dress for a sub goal
i feel like his community would be like medium size with people who donate a LOT of money and subs
mainly on twitch, uploads complications from streams on youtube but no original content
streams late at night or super early in the morning even though he has nothing to do during the normal hours of the day, his neighbors hate his guts
would definitely be the type to show you off to chat
if you’re dating this man say goodbye to a normal sleep schedule you’re never getting it back
would unironically give you his merch for christmas
posts the worst takes on twitter, for the love of all that is sacred take control of his main account
unironically has called you his little pogchamp
Xiangling (platonic)
has a really cute cooking channel with a cute like animated chibi intro. gouba is the channel mascot and the design on every piece of merch
has the most aesthetic kitchen and posts a new tour/tutorial whenever she renovates it
occasionally posts videos from the kitchen of her dad’s restaurant and/or videos with her dad and they’re the most wholesome thing ever
being her friend or roommate instantly means being in at least one video to taste test
if you can’t cook she definitely tests out tutorials on you and asks for your advice on how to explain stuff
and if you can cook she definitely asks you to participate in friendly cooking competitions or challenges with her (her food is always better but she’s a sweetheart about it)
Nahida (platonic)
wholesome toy review channel
in my soul she has a hyperfixation on toy production so despite her young age her reviews are lowkey mad informative and oddly insightful
especially favors puzzle games and those fake pet toys (i had one of a cat growing up and i loved mr whiskers with my heart and soul)
tries to edit her videos herself, but eventually her big sibling (you) edits them while she watches and makes suggestions
you manage the ‘business’ side of the channel, like helping decide which toys to review and where to get them and manage any sponsorships and explain what those mean (she picks it up real fast though)
i imagine teucer also has a two review channel so the two would become friends while reader & childe are jokingly in a rivalry (or at least reader takes it as a joke, child is very 50/50)
Aether (romantic or platonic)
wholesome travel blogger who people keep trying to beat in subscriber count before deciding to become his friend
i imagine the abyss is like a company that tried to sponsor aether but he refused because the company was against his morals, and like the fauti are another company that has the same situation going on
enjoys showing people the best places to go in different countries and how to save lots of money while doing so
paimon is definitely his younger sister or like close enough friend that they’re basically siblings who goes with him and is really good with languages so she helps aether out
didn’t really have a set house anywhere and would just edit in hotel rooms or friends’ houses until he formed the youtube group 5wirl and they live together in a big house
people were worried about what his content would be during quarantine so he switched to making content with 5wirl and playing variety games while also still making content about how he plans his next destinations and stuff
definitely plays geoguesser he’s been everywhere he’s a god at it
literally collabs with everyone he’s so friendly, being with him would be a bit frustrating because at least before 5wirl you’re always going to be moving around but he treats you like royalty
most aesthetic instagram feed in the UNIVERSE, has to be convinced to post rare pictures of himself
venti (romantic or platonic)
first member of 5wirl! he’s a cover channel and his wind spirit form is his channel icon
either does the most beautiful cover you’ve ever heard or the most cursed parody in existence it’s always a toss up
LOVES fan artists and always commissions different artists to do the thumbnail for his covers and they’re gorgeous
another person to take twitter away from he only posts when he’s drunk
keeps forgetting to post when he’s about to go live so update accounts have to do it for him and his stream always crashes from the sudden influx of people
does drunk streams with kaeya and has a separate vods channel
chat first finds out about your existence during a drunk stream and you just awkwardly come in like “hi” 🧍🏻
first interaction with aether was when aether raided him on twitch and eventually they exchanged discords and became friends
dvalin is venti’s editor who remain anonymous
if you even jokingly mention you want venti to sing/play a song he’ll drop everything to do it for you
only plays any sort of video game on stream or in a video with xiao
xiao (romantic or platonic)
was convinced by venti to join 5wirl
xiao & venti first interacted with each other at a convention like vidcon and venti made up an intro song to go with his starting soon screen and they started to talk more
the first youtube person xiao would talk about you to is venti but he doesn’t let venti talk to you until he has to convince venti you’re real and not just an excuse to not hang out or call-
mostly plays horror games on stream, literally nothing startles this man he’s always sitting there like :| while venti is screaming his lungs out
he used to be in a youtube group with the other yakshas but they all decided to quit doing youtube or streaming and therefore xiao was super hesitant to join 5wirl but you & venti worked together to convince him to give it a shot
fucked up sleep schedule, has a really cool stream setup
kazuha (romantic or platonic)
1/2 of a buzzfeed unsolved true crime style channel with heizou, the two joined 5wirl at the same time
it’s a little different of a format, basically heizou does research of unsolved cases and presents his theories while kazuha does research on solved cases and heizou tries to figure out who the culprit was
likes to play music games as well, i headcannon that he has perfect pitch so he likes to do perfect pitch tests on stream (he has ‘beef’ with venti because they both have perfect pitch and do perfect pitch contests on stream and shit)
very aesthetic instagram, he occasionally collabs with aether to do some travel style stuff every once in a while to take a break as to not get burnt out from just doing the same content style
does solo content on the shared channel with heizou where he plays survival style games and shows off his fencing skills
kazuha has a fucked up sleep schedule but it wouldn’t affect you since he’s always mindful of his volume
tomo used to be the channel editor until he decided to go to film school and didn’t have anymore time so kazuha & heizou take turns editing with your aid
likes to play animal crossing on stream with you or team survival games like raft and always makes sure that if only one of you can survive it’s going to be you
likes to play minecraft on stream but only with other people, prefers survival to creative
heizou (romantic or platonic)
1/2 of shared channel with kazuha, it was originally his idea and he brought it up to kazuha because they were friends in highschool and thought at the very least it’d be a nice way to reconnect
when kazuha is on break for solo content he likes to play murder mystery games or invites you, xiao & venti (since heizou & aether are out filming travel content) to play clue with him. does he always win? yes. but it’s still really fun since venti likes to get very into his assigned persona/character and you do the same :)
also likes to do quizzes on the internet of like reading facial/body language and is INSANELY good at it
gets easily distracted from researching unsolved cases so you always help him stay focused and do research and he’s eternally grateful for that
doesn’t particularly enjoy playing jackbox games or any group variety stuff unless it’s with you & anyone from 5wirl
doesn’t really collab with sara but the two are friends and hang out at cons
always ropes you into acting in videos with kazuha that give people tips to remain safe in any sort of situation and not get taken advantage of
kaeya (romantic or platonic)
when not doing drunk streams with venti and occasionally rosaria he’s a fashion youtuber 100%
loves roasting subscriber outfits and also covers the history of trends
lovingly makes fun of his friends’ fashion sense but it’s all in good fun
makes sure whenever you go with him to cons y’all are the best dressed
the knights of favonius are a talent/management agency and aether is called an honorary knight because while he’s not part of the agency he does collab with a lot of their members
most stylish and lowkey youtuber merch
claims to be diluc’s brother, no one believes him and think he only says that so dawn winery can sponsor him and send him wine
usually has a good sleep schedule, but all his drunk streams are always at like 2 am so good luck with dealing with his hangover
the morning after drunk streams are always hell for the both of you

Chaeri as the 8th and youngest member of BTS.
Chaeri's Masterlist
A look through Chaeri's popularity on social media
Tumblr media
✰ Instagram
✧ Within 24 hours of opening her individual instagram account, she already reached 20 million followers, making her dominance over male members already evident to the world
✧ To this day, according to statistics, 65% of her followers are males, 30% females and the remaining 5% unspecified
✧ The idea of opening a personal account was proposed by both her and her manager to the company much earlier than it would have been if she was not a member of BTS
✧ Many posts are now invisible on the account as she has archived them
✧ Instagram stories > posts
✧ She has a private account that no one knows about where she follows celebrities she is interested in
✧ She has a monthly tradition where she posts a question box on her stories and answers some of them
✧ Unseen photos of BTS are uploaded by her from time to time
✧ Comments under her pics are disabled, yet every time she posts one, the hashtag #Chaeri goes viral on twitter with all sorts of feedback
✧ Currently the most followed kpop idol with almost 96 million followers
✧ She is featured in the list compiled by wikipedia of the 20 most liked posts ever on instagram: She ranks 18th with 25.3 million likes to a photo portraying her and Jin in the commercial they shot for the perfume 'Lost Lovers' by Maison de l'Asie
Tumblr media

✰ Youtube
✧ So many fan-videos, YouTube is filled
✧ From the most unlikely ships to the most likely, clips taken from her vlogs or from content posted on the bangtan's official channel, fancam from the least to the best in video quality
✧ Some of the most loved videos on the official BTS channel are those from the 'Chaeri's Maison' series in which the crew films the girl as she builds her fashion brand 'JEONG'
✧ A format also related to her brand is uploaded monthly on youtube during the BTS hiatus. This has Chaeri in the role of interviewer and stylist whose goal is, after interviewing the celebrity guest for that episode, to show them a sketch of an outfit designed specifically for them at the end of the video. This all takes place in a vintage-style atelier, where one wall is completely covered with sketches of outfits for the brand
✧ Fancams of reactions she has during other idols' performances at award shows are constantly uploaded. Among Korean celebrities, she is definitely the one who can least control her facial expression
✧ Videos of the choreo she creates for her and other members are copied by thousands people who load tutorials and covers online
Tumblr media
Chaeri as interviewer set up
Tumblr media Tumblr media
✰ Tiktok
✧ An interview she had in America literally started her trend on TikTok. The interviewer asked her if she liked living under the label everyone gave her: IT GIRL. From then on, the edits on TikTok with the interviewer's audio in the background along with the girl's iconic moments never stopped.
✧ Famous audios with which she is often edited: Unholy | Escapism | Cardigan | Cannibal | That's my girl
The trend that goes viral
✰ Twitter
✧ Actually the place where there is the most information about her
✧ Those who start following her and want to get info or look for unpublished photos Twitter is the right place to start
✧ #AirportChaeri is trending on every occasion as armys are always amazed by the outfits she chooses to wear
✧ When Chaeri cut her hair short for the first time since her debut there was CAOS on twitter
✧ Twitter is also the place where rumoured ships between Chaeri and other idols are reasoned by fans
✧ It is also very easy to find links leading directly to thousands of fanfictions involving her as the main character. The most followed and famous one sees her as a skilful bank robber by night and a sweet and loving girlfriend of the police chief by day; Plus her partner in crime is in love with her

Why are there wraiths in my gardening game?
A Wildmender review
The point of Wildmender is that you are given a big ol' desert, and some plants and gardening tools. The plot is superfluous.
So why do the wraiths keep attacking me?
I beat the game! I murdered their leader! Why are they still staging attacks at regular intervals!
Okay, that said, the difficulty settings are super easily configurable in many different ways, so you can turn wraith damage off, etc, to make the game fit your needs and desires. I haven't actually messed with this because I'm cool with smiting a wraith every so often. Also, on standard difficulty you can just surround your home base with tower defense sigils and they will literally take care of everything up to and including the final boss for you. With the teleportation system, all you have to do is go home when a wraith attack occurs, and then lead the attackers to their doom. So the wraiths don't have to be a problem.
I really like climbing around a 3D world building my garden. I think there's a lot of end game potential - I really want to see if, if I upgrade all the springs fully, I can fill the channels of the salt flats with water, for example. (In which case I will need some sort of swim mechanic to get more pearls to upgrade the rest of the springs in the game.)
I liked how you can just garden your way past the game's obstacles. You're supposed to have a special bracelet for the salt flats to keep them from draining your water, but if you just fill your inventory with acorns and revive every spring you come across, the water drainage is manageable without that.
I think there should be more plants. There are a lot at the beginning of the game, and then toward the end it starts to feel kind of repetitive, you've got some half dozen base plants that come in different skins and all the loot is the same. You could get some really cool DLC in there by adding end-game quests to revive old strains of plants, explore seed bunkers, etc.
It's also a very lonely game. You are literally the only living creature in the world when you start. Oh, there are the gods, and your tutorial leader, but once they run out of tutorials it's just... you and the plants. Which is great! It's exactly what I'm looking for! but the loneliness creeps on you. Maybe I'm not hugging my frogs enough.
(Pro tip: Collect pearls from the salt flats and feed them to your frogs not for the upgrade capability but so that they glow purple and you can find them more easily.)
I had a lot of fun, but it would be more fun in co-op. I really want to play with Tea, but Tea cannot handle combat at all - I was hoping for a combat-free game, and then I was working on my save to beat the final boss so that the wraiths would go away so I could get Tea to come garden with me. So that's really why I'm upset about the continued wraiths. (Mind, Tea doesn't have a Windows operating system to work with, so the day is far anyway.)
Blooper Reel
It's about impossible to play the game without a mouse. You can't strafe without one, and even climbing the spiral staircases was extremely difficult. (The difficulty level dropped dramatically when I plugged in a mouse. Wraiths were a minor concern compared to getting the timing right to WASD myself around a spiral staircase with no rails.)
The game does not prevent you from going off the edge of the map, it just puts a really big cliff there. So if you want to push your boundaries, empty your inventory of important material first. I do not recommend jumping off the cliff with all the easily-obtained instances of the most difficult resource in the game. Usually you can reclaim your body, but not if it's rolled off the bottom of the cliff into doesn't-exist land.
The game tells you that you can cycle through tools using the keyboard shortcut T. It does not tell you that if you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can also use that scroll wheel. For a long time I thought it was the worst glitch in the game (there are others) and also that the game was poorly designed in terms of giving you about a dozen tools that you have to keep jabbing T to get round the circuit of. I still think a hotkey system with numbered tools would work better.
It took me a really long time to find out the cape of winds was useful. I got it to tick off the quest box, and then kept on climbing and using the vine bridge mechanism. Once I figured out the cape holy crap were the salt flats less miserable. up down up down up down infinite umbrella mushrooms...

So, new R&D has started!
This was a rare WIP post from me. I don’t usually post unfinished project as it is not my aesthetic to manage my content, but it is kind of cool to share this with you.
It is a test frame for my next mecha series, Type Astro, which, as you can see, is an upgraded version of Type Altas wiht a cockpit, more flexibe arms and legs, and a sort of spine construction to add a mid body section to allow more delicate moves and poses.
To be honest, I dont know when i will finish it. I appreciate your pentiece if my creations offer a tiny little awesomeness to your life!
By the way, new torso tutorial for Atlas Unit 03 is live on my YouTube channel! Check it out!

hi~! would you be able to make a thorough tutorial on how to use carl-bot.. specficially where people joined your server and it'll lead to one channel and you have react in order to get access to the other channels. if that makes sense. i couldn't figure out and not sure how to make it work. thank you in advance~!
of course!
this will be image heavy so, under the cut:
CARLBOT WELCOME MESSAGES & REACTION ROLES
Tumblr media
first, add carl bot to your server and then you want to access the dashboard available on the site i just linked.
select manage and then the server you want to manage and it'll show up a page like this
Tumblr media
If you go to the welcome tab on the side you'll be able to set a welcome message for new people joining. Select the message to go to your landing channel, and then you can do something like this:
Tumblr media
that string of numbers is called a channel ID - you get that by right clicking on the channel and pressing this:
Tumblr media
if this doesn't show up, you need to go to your settings and enable developer mode.
now, what you need to do is PREPARE YOUR SERVER!!
you should at least have a "read rules" role for this to work, but when running an rp i prefer to have a "guest" "member" and "admin" roles
make all channels except the landing channel and rules channel private. you can make things visible to guest vs. members at your own discretion, you do that by utilising the permissions for each channel in discord itself, not using carlbot. i can explain more about this if you need it!
once you've done that, you're ready to create your rules page!!
go down to reaction roles on the sidebar and you'll get an option to "create new reaction role"
Tumblr media
if that doesn't work, assign carl bot your admin role, with the "give admin permissions" box ticked, otherwise he may not have permission to send the messages!!!
it'll look like this in your server
Tumblr media
i hope this helps you out, let me know if you want any more information and I'll be happy to expand
