i want a scene where you see dean in the passenger seat of the impala and he’s writing in his journal talking about his parents, make some comment relating something that happened to them to the person he loves or something like that, then he looks over to the person in the drivers seat and says “hey, you wanna help me write this part?” and the camera pans over and this mysterious person he loves is revealed to be cas who then takes over to narrate for the episode

The thing is. The Winchesters would be a tragedy if Dean weren’t in it.
If there was no Dean narrating, no Dean with his car and pen and notebook, then there would be no doubt that the story being developed in front of our eyes would be a tragedy. Everyone is pushed by an invisible script along the tracks of their role in a cruel god’s story. All the characters are cogs inside a machine. The outcome is already written, it already happened. You can’t change the past. You can’t rewrite a book that has already been typed out. There’s no hope.
But Dean’s presence in the narrative changes things. Dean writing with his own hands on a notebook. Dean who is the future and who defeats the machine in the future. Dean who rips out the script in the future. Dean who refuses to be the character he’s supposed to be.
Dean who is hope.
I don’t know if the show will fix the finale. Probably not. An actual continuation will fix the finale. But this show, I suspect, could actually fix something else: 14x18.
The past has already happened so it can’t change. But the future can be changed, it doesn’t have to still follow the script.
Maybe I’m wrong and this show will, indeed, change the past. But there’s a way of fixing something bad about Supernatural without needing to do that.
If Dean is in heaven (again, the finale fix-it will be its own show, one that has Dean and Cas front and center) then this can be a partial for-now finale fix-it. Because the so-called finale (-guy pointing at forehead meme- there can’t be a finale if the thing doesn’t finish) wants us to drink up the idea that a dead Dean is static. He drives nowhere just to stop. He does nothing but drink a shitty beer that reminds him of his dad and shitty childhood, and the only prospect in front of him is to hang out with his parents next door.
This show has the opportunity to be like “oh? You put Dean in heaven? Very well. He’ll be Dean Winchester in heaven then. Doing his thing. Healing”. No static Dean who’s like “oh it’s nice to be dead :)” but a Dean Winchester who doesn’t stop fighting his fight, fixing what he can fix, help who he can help.
Heal himself by healing his family. Healing his parents.
We’re supposed to believe that Mary Winchester is also just happy to be dead and reunited with her husband for eternity. That was a pretty horrific perspective in Supernatural. Mary had started out a new chapter of her life, was making new experiences, dating someone else, learning about her husband abusing their kids - and then she’s slammed back into the dead wife role.
We were like, there is no way those two people can just meet again and heaven and just spend the rest of eternity together, like nothing else happened to them, like they didn’t both go through experiences that changed them.
But what if that’s what Dean is doing? What if Dean is looking for Mary and John’s friends, possibly lovers who could never be because of destiny, and allow them the life they could have had if not for the machine?
What if Dean allows them to reunite - all of them looking the way they did when they were all together, young and as innocent as they could ever be, already traumatized but capable of hope and love?
What if Dean is the one who brings the gang together again, yes dead - you cannot change the past - but free to be themselves and love each other and heal together?
This is my theory for a “the past cannot be changed” scenario. Who knows, maybe the show will indeed pull some fuckery and surprise me. Dean did promise us surprises. But if this is the case, then I think I would be still satisfied with it. Yes, John and Mary Winchester’s story is a tragedy, but Dean Winchester can heal it and consequently heal himself by healing it.
I mean. I would love a scenario where the show goes. “Ah, you put Dean Winchester in heaven with his parents? Very well. He goes to get his father’s boyfriend and his mother’s girlfriend. You’re welcome.”

Since the elder Winchester's death, Dean has been on a downward spiral. He continues to hunt—the only solid thing he has left in his life—but mixing booze with the job isn't one of the best choices he's ever made. The morning after a hunt-gone-wrong with a werewolf, he receives an unexpected letter. Rewatching In the Beginning
Welcome to “‘1.21 Gigawatts!’ ‘You are my density!’”: A Supernatural Rewatch Blog” with Lor and Mace!
Up today, s4e3: In the Beginning.
Cas sends Dean back in time to meet his parents and his grandparents and to witness the moment when the Yellow-Eyed Demon sinks his claws into Mary.  Dean decides to try to kill YED so that he and Sam can have a normal childhood, but, of course, that doesn’t work out. We also find out that Cas likes watching Dean when he’s sleeping. But they’re just friends. Uh-huh.
Below is a log of our real-time reactions as we watched. Remember that there may be spoilers for any part of SPN’s 15-season run here. Note also that the nature of our conversation is adult and thus it may contain adult language and themes.

 Mace:
wow, that b does not belong in there

But why Jimmy's vessel he'd still be a child at the oldest 😭
Jimmy was born in 1974 if I remember correctly, so he’s not born yet when the story starts.
Some thoughts:
I think the glimpse of 4x01 is probably meant to alert us to either angels being involved in the mystery. The scene comes up right when John asks Mary if she had ever heard of a Henry Winchester. The most iconic angelic scene from the show might only serve to remind the viewers familiar with SPN that angels can erase memories, so whatever John and Mary (and Dean) might know, it might not be the truth because angels - in their capacity of guardians of the story that Chuck wants to tell - have interfered.
We probably won’t see Cas in Jimmy’s vessel breaking down the doors of a barn to confront John or Mary like he did meet Dean (and Bobby) in 4x01.
Cas, at normal powers, can time travel. We could see Jimmy!Cas in the prequel if he comes back in time from a timeframe where he is in possession of time traveling power. (S4 to S8, hypothetically post S15)
Cas could show up in another vessel.
They could just say “whatever” and cast Misha as Jimmy’s dad ;3 I mean new John and Mary don’t look like the young John and Mary we know and we’ll deal with that.

See You Again| Destiel | 1|
Summary: Castiel Novak never meant to fall in love with his commanding officer, Dean Winchester nor did he mean to make a promise to take care of Dean's wife and children back home if anything happened to him. Then something did end up happening to Dean and after weeks of fighting the nagging guilt, Cas goes to Lawrence and meets his family and seeing how heartbroken Dean's wife is, he fulfills his promise to take care of her and their children. Then Dean shows up after they are settled into a new life turning everything on its head.
@ohnoitsthebat
Nov 1939
Lawrence Kansas
Dean and Ellie Winchester's house.
The only thing that could be heard from the drive way of the small house that Dean and Ellie Winchester lived was shouts and the sound of breaking glass, which was highly unusual, normally the young couple kept themselves and they only said hello on their way out of the house in the morning when the husband went out to his car to go to the garage that his father owned, and then the wife went to the elementary school where she taught kindergarten in the mornings and then she went to the garage in the afternoons to help out.
Several of the neighbors peeked their heads out of the window to see if they could hear what was going on and what was causing the fight.
But a car carrying Dean's parents pulled in and the mother rushed up the walkway and into the house like she knew what bad news that her son broke to his wife, John, the father was taking his time walking up the driveway to stop any sort of gossip from starting.
He was walking slowly up the walkway, he didn't want to be the one to pull his son out of the line of fire. He had told him several times over that he shouldn't get married right after Ellie graduated college with her teaching degree.
Especially with the chances of going to war, Europe was being ripped totally apart and the building tensions with the Japanese. He didn't want to become responsible for Ellie, his three kids were enough.
"Your son joined the Marines without telling me when there is a goddamn war going on and he could be shipped out." Ellie's raised voice came the house, "We could lose him."
The terror in her voice wasn't hard to miss, she had lost her parents at young age and her father's younger sister Ellen moved into the house with her husband and daughter who was the same as their daughter Savannah to raise her.
But the girl had some separation issues, always going into a near tizzy when someone she loved was leaving her for long periods of time and Dean joining the Marines meant that he was leaving her for a extended period of time.
"You don't know that Ellen." John said as he stepped into the house and shut the door behind him to stop the nosey neighbors from trying to peer in, his wife was already standing next to Ellie holding her tightly so she wouldn't grab another dish to throw at Dean, who had a red welt growing on his cheek from where she had slapped him.
"How can you be so sure John? Look at what happened with the first world war and how much our families lost."
He and Tony, Ellie's father had both been in the Marines and were getting ready to ship out when the war ended but they ended up losing family members and family friends and Tony lost his father and it was the one thing that both Scott siblings made sure their kids knew. She had her father's dog tags hanging around her neck along with the cross that her mother wore daily.
A constant reminder.
A reminder that John didn't need to see every day when she came into the garage to help out.
"I know you are upset sweetheart." His son started still holding his hands up chest high, to show he understood his wife's feelings. "But this is what is best for our family."
Ellie wanted to snap at him, saying he didn't know what was best for their family and that they should have made that decision together, but the fight drained out of her and she let Mary lead her to the kitchen table and to one of the chairs that wasn't overturned.
"I talked to your Aunt." Dean started once he realized that she had settled down, "Jo is going to come stay with you while I am gone so you aren't alone."
Jo was Ellie's only cousin and her best friend, the two girls did almost everything together and knowing that Jo was there with his wife was going to bring him some sort of peace of mind.
Him telling Ellie, this was for the best of their family that they wanted to start was the truth, the garage wasn't making as much as it should and he wanted to be able to have her stop teaching once she was pregnant  to be at home with their children like their mothers had been with them.
"I really wish that you would have told me this before.' She finally started after Mary pressed a steaming coffee mug into her hands and her husband finally went around the table and sat next to her. "So you wouldn't possibly be missing out on the first months of your child's life."
Everything stood still for a split second, 'Are you sure?" Dean asked as he reached twitching fingers out to brush the bangs that fell into her eyes away.
"Positive." She returned, "6 months give or take."
He didn't know if he should laugh, cry or throw up or all at the same time. They had talked about having a family in the near future but they never planned anything out, that is all it was, conversations.
And normally Ellie liked to have a set plan before they did anything and this wasn't apart of the plan. But look at the hopefulness in her eyes, he shook off all feelings and pulled her into his arms hugging her tightly and dropping several kisses to her cheeks and her mouth. He wanted to say something, anything at all but he couldn't bring himself too.
Nothing he could say or do anything to take the sudden pit he had in his stomach or elevate the fear that she had, but all he do at point was try.

Them: John Winchester gets so much hate because people are angry on behalf of Dean and Sam and all of the issues they face and them being left alone in motel rooms for a while as well as their being trained as kids, and don't know who else to blame. That's why he gets such a bad rep. But he's actually a good dad and he sacrificed for his kids. If it wasn't for him, Dean and Sam wouldn't be the hunters they are today. Even the boys know John isn't at fault and still love him. So people need to back the hell off of John. He's a great dad.
Tumblr media
Um...what?
Tumblr media
(yeah, that's a total look of admiration from Dean for the greatest Dad ever)
Tumblr media
(as Dean is severely injured in the backseat -> even though the context of the dialogue is that John is surprised that Sam didn't shoot to kill him while he was possessed, the show chose to focus on Dean in this shot while John is saying this for a reason, they could have had Dean sitting behind John instead of Sam, not to mention they showed the obvious contrast of Sam putting Dean first while John is putting his revenge first)
Oh and let's not forget these as well:
Sam mentioned in the pilot how John gave him a gun at 9 years old to deal with the 'monster' in his closet (an untrained 9 year old fyi)
He left them in motel rooms for days on end to go on a hunt, with a young Dean parenting a younger Sam
Dean's reaction to finding out that while he was left to take care of Sam, John was fucking around with Adam's mom and then later sneaking off to take Adam to baseball games and to get to know his other son - making sure Adam never knew about hunting or guns or monsters (the childhood Dean and Sam never got to have); also Dean's momentary reaction to when Adam says John drove all night to meet him once he found out he had a son
Dean knew his dad wasn't his dad when John started to tell him how proud of him he was & saying all of the things he would want to hear
Revenge on the demon that killed Mary was more important than his sons; even Mary herself said later on that she never wanted the hunting life for her boys
In this dialogue in 2x01, John admits to Dean being spousified and parentified and putting too much on his shoulders
The scene where Dean gets in between Sam and John before they come to blows is an example of a byproduct of parentification
While Sam is able to forgive John (pre-loss John back in time), there was still something he needed to forgive him for and it wasn't just leaving them for days on end in dingy motel rooms
John apologizes to both Dean and Sam in 14x13 separately (again, something that he knew he had to apologize for); "It was supposed to end with me." - what makes this scene even sadder is realizing this is all a part of Dean's wish, this side of John seen had Mary been back (which she was) and he wasn't hellbent on revenge (making his boys suffer for it)
when Dean is dying in 1x12, Sam leaves John a voicemail telling him that Dean is dying; John never responds or even acknowledges the message
Dean's reaction to the Max Miller case and Sam's ultimate realization that they had it luckier than Max with John (and Dean's look at Sam in response)
John's initials not being added by either Sam or Dean to the bunker table while theirs, Mary's, Jack's, and Cas' were
Dean toasting "John" with Sam in 15x19 not "Dad"; even Sam's "Dad?" seems surprised at this
Toni telling Mary during her captivity about John's "drunken rages" while raising the boys in her absence & intimates just how bad they got
Dean tells Mary in 14x11 about how he and Sam once made Winchester Surprise while growing up, during John's absence, only for John to come home and lose his temper at the mess they had made
Sam's "You've always protected me. From Dad" in 15x17 and Dean's reaction
John's leaving Dean in jail when he was arrested for getting caught stealing food for him and Sam (because he had lost their money) & didn't return for Dean for 2 months - "Well, his old man called. Once he found out what happened, he said let him rot in jail."
John's refusal to leave Dean at Sonny's for one night and wanting to hurry to the next stop, even after Sonny explained to him why Dean should stay for the night -- after a 2 month absence of leaving Dean in what he thought was jail
The boys never having a home until they were adults - John never rented an apartment or gave them any semblance of a hotel room or home outside of dingy motel rooms and the Impala (which is what Dean and Sam recognize as their childhood home)
Bobby's anger with John for not letting the boys be kids
Dean's reaction to IllusionDemon!Dean with "I didn't deserve what he put on me" in season 3
Missouri (a psychic) being flabbergasted that John won't tell his boys that he's there or what's going on
John not responding to or acknowledging the tearful voicemail that Dean left for him regarding their old house and the haunting that was going on there
Cas had to tell Dean that he wasn't the soldier that he had been fashioned to be aka Daddy's Blunt Little Instrument (15x18)
John put the responsibility of Sam on Dean even more heavily one more time before he died (2x01), telling Dean to kill him if he couldn't save him
Dean apologizes to Sam for not always being there when they were kids in 14x12 with: "I know things got dicey. You know, with Dad. The way he was." "In order to keep the peace, I know it probably looked like I took his side quite a bit. Sometimes when I was, when I was away, you know it wasn't just 'cause I ran out, right? Dad would--he would send me away when I really pissed him off. I think you knew that." Sam: "Man, I left that behind a long time ago. I had to."
John being dead in Dean's Djinn dream instead of Mary & Dean's monologue in front of John's headstone, especially "Why is it my job to save these people?"
John took Adam to a baseball game for his birthday; John sent Dean on his first solo hunt on his birthday (as per the companion piece that was John's journal that was released)
Dean comforting Mary when his dad stormed out and left them for a few days when he was really young (once again, spousification - while John wasn't present, his actions directly caused this effect, even back then) -- plus Sam's: "I never realized how long you've been cleaning up Dad's messes."
But yeah, Best. Dad. Ever.
Tumblr media
You like John, cool. But those of us that can't stand the man have our valid reasons, reasons that the show made sure to put into the story and had their characters reacting to, from his wife and own children to other characters such as Bobby, Cas, and even side characters like Toni. It's not because we don't know who to blame. We very much know who is responsible. And whether you love John or not, the fact remains clear: he is directly responsible for what happened to Dean and Sam for all of the years they were with him, and not only for their training but also their development. Which continued to affect them long into their adult lives (aka the end of the show). Maybe you can gloss over it, sugarcoat it even, but it doesn't erase his culpability. He sucked as a dad and that's putting it lightly.
Tumblr media
Bonus:
Here's some extra viewing of the greatest dad ever: (x - Bob Wess, which goes into detail on just how Dean and Sam were affected by John's abuse and neglect throughout their lives thanks to the trauma); (x - compilation of John season 1 scenes where he is being an insufferable ass to his boys, the show chose to put in these scenes btw with this dialogue and these actors' performances); (x - a fantastic compilation of scenes showing just how much Dean was affected thanks to John's "upbringing"); (x - another brilliant compilation showing not only John's effect but also how different Dean was and how people who mattered to him like Sam and Bobby wanted him to be)

A Dean Jr sequel could be soooo much fun, they could add one of Garth's werewolf children as a sidekick... The bunker's still there, there's a bunch of characters who could be introduced, J&J could show up in a special episode where someone summons their ghosts :P Dean Jr is pretty much a non-character, all we know is that he seems like a nice guy and that he really loved his father, so a good writing team could do good with him! Way more exciting than John and Mary IMO, but I'm still hoping we get a good surprise on that one and it turns out to be fun too :)
Oh man I forgot about Garth's twins, Sam II and Cas II. Heh maybe that's why Garth didn't name his kid Dean II because they were saving the name for Sam's own son.
Tumblr media
Personally I don't like prequels in general because it labors under the burden of the audience already knowing what's going to happen. Prequels can work if they're fleshing out the mythology of already-beloved characters i.e Gotham James Gordon. But John and Mary aren't exactly beloved characters in the SPNverse.  So a sequel spinoff makes more sense IMO.
My dream fanfiction spinoff is Dean II is not a hunter but some of his children will be.   Whenever Dean II needs to recounts useful information or lessons or inspirations, Jared appears at Sam in flashbacks passing on the lessons to young Dean II, like  Psych flashback scenes of young Shawn and his father that starts each episode.  And there can be flashback within flashback using scenes from the original show while Sam imparts the lessons to Dean II.
Dean II could re-open the bunker once he realizes some of his children are going to be hunters, and are joined by Garth’s children who are avenging the death of their mother.
Then for one (or three) episodes the adult hunter grandchildren time travels back to 2020 to search for a valuable artifact only to meet Sam and Dean after the event of 15x19 and one month before 15x20.  The grandchildren of course cannot tell Sam and Dean who they really are while the brothers help them find the artifact.  As the grandchildren spend more time with Sam and Dean, they come to really like Dean and want to warn him of his impeding death.  But then they realized that if Dean lives, Sam won’t leave hunting, won’t meet their grandmother, and they will cease to exist.

12x01 Rewrite with Trans Dean
trigger warnings for minor mention of dysphoria. Also minor/negligent transphobia.
“Mom?” His heart is stopped in his chest, staring at the face he’s kept in his head for all of his life, the face he’s thought of as the only real home he’s ever had. She looks the same, exactly the same. “I… uh, are you really… real?”
He reaches out without thinking, needing to just make sure that Amara didn’t bring back a fantasy or a ghost or a sick joke. She proves it without him touching her, flipping him in a neat trick he recognizes from his own training and ending up with her foot on his neck, pressing him into the dirt. “Where am I? Who the hell are you?”
She looks so scared. Dean swallows, his Adam’s apple bouncing against the bottom of her foot. He needs to make her trust him, preferably before she does something rash like snap his neck. “I’m Dean Winchester. I’m your son. I’m… Sam’s brother”
The pressure lets up on Dean’s neck even though Mary’s shaking her head. “No. No, I don’t have two boys. They’re- they’re just kids.”
Dean winces, breathing heavily. This is gonna be a motherfucker for her to understand. Still, Mary lets him up, and he stands and rubs his neck, trying desperately to recall every bit of information he’s stored away about his mom. “Mom. Listen to me. Your name- your name is Mary Sandra Campbell, okay? You were born December 5, 1954, to Samuel and Deanna Campbell. Your father, he bounced around a lot for, uh, work, and you bounced right along with him, and you ended up in Lawrence, Kansas.”
Mary flinches, the facts hitting straight-on. “How do you know all that?”
“Dad told me.” Dean tells her. He doesn’t tell her that he had to gather the story from slurred words, drunken tears in between stories about the perfect wife. That he recited them in his head like a prayer so he wouldn’t forget her. “March 23, 1972, you walked out of a movie theater - Slaughterhouse-Five. You loved it, and you bumped into a big Marine and you knocked him flat on his ass. You were embarrassed, and he laughed it off, said you could make it up to him with a cup of coffee. So, you went to, uh,” God, what was the name of that stupid place? “Mulroney’s, and you talked and he was cute and he knew the words to every Zeppelin song,” A memory of a smiling young alive Mary comes to mind, and he pushes it away because it hurts. She’s right there. “So when he asked you for your number, you gave it to him, even though you knew your dad would be pissed. That was the night that -” You fell in love with- “that you met -”
“John Winchester.”
“August 19, 1975, you were married… in Reno. Your idea.”Dean had always thought that was hilarious. He looks her in the eyes again, pleading with her to not dispute the next part. “A few years later, I came along, then Sammy.”
“No, no. My oldest was a girl, Deanna.” Mary looks Dean up and down, taking in his short hair, wide shoulders, and flat chest. He crosses his arms over that now, uncomfortable, hoping she isn’t looking at his long eyelashes or his delicate cheekbones or his hips. All the places he’s insecure about.
“Yeah, um… that’s me.” He looks up at her, his jaw clenching, waiting for the ball to drop. “I shortened the name a little, and the- uh- hair.” He tries for the old charming smile as he runs a hand through the spiky hair he hasn’t let grow out in 20 years. It doesn’t quite get there, settling at a more delicate need for approval. Mary doesn’t give it to him. “Do you believe me?”
She bypasses the question, turning her eyes away from him to look at the car behind him. Something changes in her eyes. “I burned.” She says quietly, like she’s remembering the heat. Dean swallows. He remembers the heat too. “How long have I been gone?”
“33 years.” His voice cracks.
Mary looks back to him, and she moves forward, putting two gentle fingers to his cheek, to the freckles sprayed across soft skin. He’s had them forever, even when he was little. “Dee?” She calls him by his old nickname; Dean’s doubly thankful that he doesn’t use his deadname.
“Hi, mom.” There are tears in his eyes.
------------------------------------------------------
“How did he die?”
Dean bows his head. He’s really not selling himself too good here, is he? First the trans thing, now- “He gave himself up for me.” He’ll be surprised if Mary wants anything to do with him. Surprisingly, she chuckles and sniffles.
“That does sound like John.” He looks over, and she’s smiling. His brow furrows. Killing himself to save Dean’s ass does sound like John, but not in a way that makes him want to smile. “And he was a hunter? And he raised-” She stutters now, looking at him again and looking away just as quickly. “You and Sam to be-”
“Yeah, he did.” A cold weight is settling in Dean’s stomach, and he tries and fails to not let it seep into his words.
“And you said we’ve met before, when you traveled through time,”
Dean nods. It had been horrible and amazing to see Mary and have her see him, just as some guy. A guy, at all. “Twice. Your memory got wiped, so…” So you don’t remember me telling you I was your kid, and you not believing me. I do.
“And you’re… my daughter-”
Dean coughs. He hasn’t been called a daughter in a long-ass time. “No, I’m- I mean. I was. I know it’s a lot. And I’ll explain everything. I will. But right now, let’s get out of here. Let’s get you home. Come on, Mom.”
She doesn’t correct him, which means she must believe, at least a little bit, that she is his mom.
-----------------------------------------------------
“You live here?” She looks around the cavernous space and he smiles, looking around too. It really is awesome.
“Yeah, when we’re not on the road. It’s an old Men of Letters bunker.”
“Men of Letters?” She scoffs. Dean grins a bit and looks at her. He thinks he likes her. “They’re a myth. An old hunter’s story.”
He tilts his head. He’s just gonna keep blowing her mind today, apparently. “Not so much. New duds look good.” He gestures to her clothes. He’d lent her some extra clothes he’d had in the trunk, and he tries not to fixate on how they weren’t that big on her. He’s not much taller than her, and he knows part of that even is the heeled boots he’s wearing.
“Well, thanks. It’s better than walking around in that nightgown the rest-” Dean’s nodding, about to say something extremely awkward like ‘Yeah, nightgowns are a bitch,’ when he finally looks at what she’s staring at, spattered on the floor of the bunker. “That’s blood.”
“Yeah.” Dean’s heart leaps into his throat, but he goes into autopilot before he can think about freaking out. He takes his gun out from his pants and cocks it, clearing the immediate area. A blurred sigil on the wall puts another bolt of fear through his chest. “Sammy? Cas?” He winces at how high his voice goes.
He takes the Map Table’s gun out from its hiding place and hands it to Mary. She was a hunter too, and he’s not about to leave her unarmed to clear the place. “Take this. Stay here.” Dean takes off immediately. It isn’t until he’s moving on to check the kitchen that he hears the voice. Mary’s clear as a bell, saying,
“Hands, now,”
Dean’s in the room before he can think about it. His heart practically comes undone when he sees that dumb familiar trench coat. He puts his body between Cas and his mom’s gun immediately, hoping she will trust him enough not to shoot through him. “Whoa, whoa, whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa! It’s okay, it’s okay. He’s a friend, all right?” He meets Cas’s eyes and sees the utter relief in his eyes, and a surge of warmth fills his chest. “Hey, Cas.”
It’s a lackluster greeting when they both thought they’d never see each other again, and Cas shows it when he steps forward quickly and pulls Dean into a tight hug. “Dean!”
Dean grins and pats his back. “Hey, okay. All right,” He comforts him quietly.
“Dean, you’re alive?” Cas pulls away and looks him over, like he’s afraid Dean might disappear. Dean nods, understanding; he had done the same thing to Mary, after all.
“Yeah.”
“What about the bomb and the Darkness? What happened?”
“I’ll tell you everything. Where is Sam?”
“He’s not here.” Obviously. Dean could smack him, but his face wants to break into a fond smile instead. He represses both urges.
“Are you a hunter?”
“No, I’m an angel.”
“He’s an angel.” Dean says over Cas. They look at each other and then back at Mary.
“Come again?”
“An angel, with a capital A,” Dean clarifies. He feels, ridiculously, a little bit like he’s showing off. Showing Cas off. “You know, wings, harp.”
“No, I don’t have a harp.”
Dean laughs. “This is Castiel. Cas, this is… Mary. Winchester.”
------------------------------------------------------
“It’s been kinda weird, here. You know, with mom being back?” And learning that her baby girl is now a full grown man? “It’s like we don’t know how to act around each other, so we just kinda make this small talk, and act like it’s normal, but it’s- it’s so not normal.” Dean can hear the pleading in his voice.
“What has she said to you?” Cas asks quickly. Dean bites his lip to hide the smile he’s trying to get from hearing Cas get all angry and protective on his behalf. He’s reminded of the time Cas looked him directly in the face and said, ‘Dean Winchester, if anyone is ever transphobic to you, I will smite them immediately and without any remorse.’ And before Dean could make a quip about internalized transphobia, Cas added, ‘Do not make me do that to you.’
“Well, nothing. That’s- that’s the whole point.” It’s the kind of thing most people usually wanna go over, what the fuck gender their kid is? He’s pretty sure no news does not mean good news in this context.
“Okay, what have you said to her?”
“Well, nothing. I’m- I don’t know what to say to her, y’know? It’s like it’s all too much, and I don’t wanna overwhelm her.”
“Dean, your identity is not ‘too much.’” Cas says immediately. Dean sighs. That wasn’t what he meant, even though he has said something similar before. Something when he was lonely and sad and feeling like explaining his dick to a one night stand was too complicated for him to do to even assuage it that way.
“No- I know. It’s not that. It’s… everything.”
Now it’s Cas’s turn to sigh. “Don’t make things unnecessarily complicated, as you humans tend to do. I’ll call you.” He hangs up.
Dean lets the phone fall with his arm limp to his side. “Yeah. Great. That’s helpful.” He says to the empty air. “That’s helpful.” Asshole.
-------------------------------------------------------
They’re in the car, and Dean is driving, and there is too much going on. He’s not sure whether he’s happy that Cas is in the backseat for this conversation or not. “So you’re… my Deanna.”
Dean’s hands tighten on the wheel. He looks at them and ignores the voice in his head that says they are petite. Womanly. “Uh, yeah. I was born Deanna Jane Winchester.” He clears his throat and meets Cas’s eyes in the rearview. He gives him a little nod, and Dean continues. “I’m… It’s called trans.”
Dean risks a look over at Mary, and she’s playing with her ring. “So you… wanted to be a boy.”
Dean clears his throat again. He’s pretty sure he does it every time before he talks, and he’s also pretty sure his voice gets lower every time he talks, too. He swears it’s an automatic reflex.
“Dean’s soul is- that of a human man.” Cas interrupts, saying it like that clarifies things. The corner of Dean’s mouth tilts up a little bit. Cas did tell him that he could see his soul, and also told him that it was, and he quotes ‘A color more similar to that of a men than women.’ Which, yeah, that tracks. He guesses Cas leaves off the ‘more similar’ part to make things simpler for Mary.
“And so you…” Mary trails off, a finger pointing toward his chest aborting its mission when she realizes it might be rude.
Dean raises an eyebrow with amusement. “Cut my tits off? Yeah.” He takes a hand off the wheel to raise his shirt, proudly showing off his top surgery scars. Mary trails a hand along them, feeling the raised skin. “After Sammy went to college. It was a bitch of a few weeks, but it was worth it.”
Mary takes her hand away and nods, brows furrowed like she’s trying to wrap her head around it. Dean grins. The grin freezes awkwardly, the edges tilting down, when Mary opens her mouth again. “So you have a-”
Cas coughs loudly in the back seat. Dean meets his wide eyes with a similar expression, and Mary cuts off the question, catching onto the fact she said something wrong. “Don’t think we really need to go there, do we, mom?”
That was a question for him and whatever lucky son of a bitch (gender neutral) ended up in his bed at the end of the night. “Right.” Mary says quickly. She turns her whole body then, asking, “Is that why you like men?”
Dean only swerves a little, he swears. The car coming the opposite direction doesn’t seem to agree, holding its horn long and hard. Luckily, it gives him a moment to stutter less obviously.
“Sorry, I just meant- since you two are-” Mary gestures between Cas and Dean, and Dean blinks his eyes solidly, trying to convince himself this is really happening.
“No! I mean, we-” Dean doesn’t have the balls (hehe) to look at Cas in the back seat, but he can see the trench coat shifting out of his peripheral. “I’m not-”
“Was John okay with this?”
Dean laughs. It comes out bitter and dark. “Dad didn’t much give a fuck what I did with my body. He’d given up on grandkids about the time he saw how decent I was at hunting, so my long hair wasn’t a personal loss.” He knew I wasn’t gonna live long enough to give him grandkids, not without some self-sacrifice on John’s part.
Mary looks a little shocked at his outburst, and Dean almost feels bad for being so blunt and crass. But then he remembers growing up with John as his male role model, and he tightens his jaw. No, the bluntness and crassness was accurate. “Oh.”
“... Yeah.” Dean bites his lip and risks another glance at his mom.
“So, you’re okay with this?” He waves a hand at himself. Asking if she was okay with him was just too pathetic, even for him. She looks at him uncertainly, a frown he recognizes as his own on her face.
“I don’t think I’m okay with any of this, Dean. But… I guess I’ll adjust.”

Here's how the SPN finale could have been great, if they had the people from Adventure Time running the show:
- it immediately starts off in the future, with a haggard, older Sam fighting monsters and being reckless; he's hunting with some younger hunters, maybe Claire and Kaia; they invite him to drinks but he declines and gets in the Impala and drives away; he takes his eyes off the road to look at a picture of him and Dean and his family that he keeps in the glove box and we get bright lights on his face then a cut to black
- Sam wakes up young again, and there's people around and he realizes he's in Heaven; his Heaven includes Bobby and he explains that Jack has restructured Heaven, it's expansive and there's 'worlds' instead of reliving memories; Sam says that that's cool and asks where Dean is; Bobby distracts him by showing him the Roadhouse and everyone, and it's cool but Sam asks if Dean will be by; this is where we find out Dean isn't in this plane, and that he has his own place; Sam is stunned because he expected to see Dean, and demands to go see him; gets told no
- Sam rushes out to confront Jack and gets into a scuffle with angels which brings back Gabriel who stops them, asking them "you know who this is?" Gabe takes him to Jack and they talk, Sam demanding to see Dean; "he's happy Sam." "No! He can't be happy without me!" Sam goes off to search Heaven for Dean
- Along the way he runs into friends old and new (Charlie, Men of Letters, Rufus, Missouri, Mary and John); even monster Heaven, like Benny; those who were monsters but still good
- Eventually Sam gets caught by the angels and brought back to Jack and we get Jack talking about how he gave up his normal life for this, to make Heaven such a great place; and in it we get some insight that this responsibility was too much for him, too young, and Sam apologizes for how he's been acting like a child too; "But that doesn't mean I want to stop. I need to see Dean."
- "Then let me take you to him." Camera turns, revealing Cas
- Cas takes Sam to a Lake House, Dean's Heaven, and watches him playing with Miracle in the field. "This is his Heaven?" "Actually it... it's ours." Destiel reveal. Boom.
- Dean and Sam see each other and run and crush each other into hugs, talking about how they missed each other; they go into the house to reconnect; Sam fills Dean in and then goes like "Now it can be the two of us again..." which, Dean makes a face at.
- This is Dean's perfect Heaven and he enjoys it, and it doesn't seem like Sam is ready; "oh, so your Heaven is perfect because I'm not in it?" "No. Of course not. It's just... this is my perfect Heaven, just like you'll have yours. We can still talk but... but looking back, I don't regret how it went down. Not anymore. Not that I have Cas."
- Sam then reveals he still has baggage from how it went down, and spent every day jumping into danger until they could reunite because he never expected Dean's death to hurt that bad (instead of making us think Sam's family farce was actually him moving on...)
- Dean tells him he's sorry that he left, but death wasn't the answer; "No matter what, we would have always found each other. What was important is you should have lived your life without my shadow over you."
- Sam breaks down crying, wishing he could have another chance
- Jack offers it to him
- They say their goodbyes, with Cas and Dean standing side by side, Cas's arm around Dean; their hands tangled by Cas's side; they watch Sam disappear and share a few words and kiss
- we cut back to Sam, at the top of the episode, with the invitation for drinks still waiting; this time, he accepts; before he meets them there, though, he asks for a quick minute; he reaches into his phone and sends a quick text to Eileen "I'm sorry for what happened. Can we talk." Then he gets in the car and starts driving to the bar, opposite of where he was going originally, as Carry On My Wayward Son plays and the camera zooms out to capture the Impala driving away
THIS IS HOW DEAN DYING COULD HAVE WORKED

Honestly if the prequel doesnt have angels / Cas etc in them whats the point?? The Mary/John story is intricately tied to the angels. Which Robbie Thompson - who is working on the show isn't he - knows. Cas could even interact with Mary and then just say Niomi earesed his memories. I'd like it if this prequel would give a backstory why Cas was the one chosen to rescue/lead saving Dean from hell
oh plus: Aren't like half of the SPN characters alive during the Prequel series? Mary, John, Rufus, Bobby, Jody, all the demons, all the angels etc In theory there is a lot of potential, even things that contract canon could be explained by timey-wimey / angel memory stuff. John could learn about the spn and that could lead to Mary/Johns relationship being ruined therefore the angels have to intervene etc
That would honestly be really cool, if they somehow retconned that Cas's connection to Dean started before he rescued him from hell. Super into that idea.
The nice thing about the memory wiping part of the lore is they can get away with having the angels do ALMOST anything in the prequel, and keep is canonically coherent. Which actually does open up a LOT of possibilities (potentially). I'm also very much hoping they include characters like Bobby, Rufus, maybe even Crowley, or young Missouri Mosley. Jody is a little younger, so I don't know if timing-wise it would make sense to include her. But I am very much hoping they bring in young versions of some of the older characters who are more of the generation before Sam & Dean.
Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I am kind of interested in this idea -- but really only if the angels are "pulling the strings" in various ways. Like, for example, there's already some contradictory things about Mary and John's relationship in the current canon. When Dean narrates his parent's first meeting to Mary in "Keep Calm and Carry On" he makes it sound like they liked each other right off the bat. But in "My Bloody Valentine," the cupid says M&J hated each other at first, and the angels had to actually work at it to get them together. Also, in "Dark Side of the Moon" they see in Dean's memories J&M fighting, but Sam is like, I thought they had the perfect marriage, according to Dad. It would honestly be interesting to find out the angels might have been screwing with Mary & John to keep them married, including messing with their memories of things, potentially.
Making the angels a big part of it would add so much IMO, both to give us more backstory on characters like Castiel (or even Anna, or Balthazar or Gabriel) and to make the Mary & John stuff a lot more interesting.

On your comments about Jack: ye-es, in the sense that Jack is a character who definitely deserved better than he was treated by the characters. The way Dean especially treats him reflects very badly on Dean, no question. But, speaking as a viewer, I think the perspective needs to shift a little bit.
To me, Jack is Dawn from Buffy, or Scrappy Doo. He’s an (in my opinion) irritating kid who is introduced out of nowhere to be both super vulnerable and super OP, and the jeopardy is centered around him in a way that has nothing to do with his actual character or relationships. He’s mostly around to be cute and to solve or create problems — he never has any firm character arcs or goals of his own, nor any deeper purpose in the meta narrative. In this way, he’s a miss for SPN, which focuses heavily on conflicts as metaphors for real life.
Mary fits so much better in that framework, and introducing her as a developed, flawed person works really well with the narrative. It is easy for us to care about Mary, both as the dead perfect mother on the pedestal and as the flawed, human woman who could not live up to her sons’ expectations. That connection is built into the core of SPN, and was developed over years, even before she was a character. When she was added, she was given depth and nuance organically, and treated as a flawed, complex character rather than as a plot device or a contrivance. She was given a voice and independence, and became a powerful metaphor for developing new understandings of our parents in adulthood, as well as an interesting and well-rounded character. You care that she’s dead, not just because Sam and Dean are sad, but for the loss of her development and the potential she offered. So, in that sense, I think a lot of people were frustrated that she died essentially fridged for a second time, and especially in service of the arc of a weaker character.
And like, you’re right, no one can figure out if Jack is a toddler or a teenager. He’s both and he’s neither, because he’s never anything consistently and his character arc is always “whatever the plot needs it to be.” Every episode is different. Is he Dean’s sunny opportunity to be a parent and make up for his dad’s shitty parenting? Yes! Is he also Dean’s worst failure and a reminder that he has done many horrible things, including to “innocent” children? Yes! Is he Cas’s child? Yes! Is he Dean’s child? Yes! But also, no! Is he Sam’s child? Yes! Is he a lonely teenager who does terrible things? Yes! Is he a totally innocent little lamb who doesn’t get why what he is doing is wrong? Yes! Is he the most powerful being in the universe? Yes! Does he need everyone to take care of him? Yes! Is he just along for the ride? Yes! Is he responsible for his actions? Kinda??? Sometimes??? What is he???
Mary as a character is narratively cohesive and fleshed-out. Jack is a mishmash of confusing whatever’s that all add up to a frustrating plot device with no consistent traits to latch on to. Everything that fans like about him (cute outfits, gender play, well-developed parental bonds with the characters) is fanon. So, yes, the narrative prioritizes Mary. Many fans prioritize Mary, at least enough that Dean’s most heinous acts barely register. To the narrative (not to Cas, which is a totally different situation), Jack is only barely more of a character than Emma Winchester, who Sam killed without uproar seasons earlier. He’s been around longer, but he’s equally not really real.
I debated on responding to this because, to tell the truth, I think we fundamentally disagree on a number of subjects and, as they say, true insanity is arguing with anyone on the internet. However, you spent a lot of time on the above and I feel it's only fair to say my thoughts, even if I don't believe it will sway you any more than what you said changed my opinions.
I'm assuming this was in response to this post regarding how Jack's accidental killing of Mary was treated so severely by the brothers, particularly Dean, because it was Mary and, had it been a random character like the security guard in 13x06, it would have been treated far differently. However, then the argument becomes less about the reaction of the Winchester brothers to this incident and more the value of Jack or Mary to the audience.
I believe we need to first admit that both characters are inherently archetypes—Mary as the Madonna character initially then, later, as a metaphor for how imperfect and truly human our parents are compared to the idol we have as children, and Jack as the overpowered child who is a Jesus allegory by the end. Both have a function within the story to serve the Winchester brothers, through whose lens and with whose biases we are meant to view the show's events. We also need to admit that the writers didn't think more than a season ahead for either character, especially since it wasn't initially supposed to be Mary that came back at the end of season 11 but John, and they only wrote enough for Jack in season 13 to gauge whether or not the audience would want him to continue on or if he needed to be killed off by the end of the season. Now, I know we curate our own experiences online which leads to us being in our own fandom echo chambers, however it is important to note that the character was immediately successful enough with the general audience that, after his first episode or two, he was basically guaranteed a longer future on the show.
I have to admit, I’m not entirely sure why the perspective of how his character is processed by some audience members versus others has any bearing on the argument that he deserved to be treated better overall by the other characters especially when taking their own previous actions in mind. I’m not going to tell you that your opinion is wrong regarding your feelings for Jack. It’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it, it harms no one to have it and express it. My feelings on Jack are clearly very different from your own, but this is really just two different people who processed a fictional person in different ways. I personally believe he has a purpose in the Winchesters’ story, including Castiel’s, as he reflects certain aspects of all of them, gives them a way to explore their own histories through a different perspective, and changes the overall dynamic of Team Free Will from “soldiers in arms” to a family (Misha’s words). In the beginning he allows Sam to work through his past as the “freak” and powerful, dangerous boy wonder destined to bring hell on earth. With Dean, his presence lets Dean work through his issues with John and asks whether he will let history repeat itself or if he’ll work to break the cycle. Regarding Cas, in my opinion he helps the angel reach his “final form” of a father, member of a family, lover and protector of humanity, rebellious son, and the true show of free will.
From strictly the story, he has several arcs that work within themes explored in Supernatural, such as the argument of nature versus nurture, the question of what we’re willing to give up in order to protect something or someone else and how ends justify the means, and the struggle between feeling helpless and powerless versus the corruptive nature of having too much power and the dangerous lack of a moral compass. His goals are mentioned and on display throughout his stint on the show, ones that are truly relatable to some viewers: the strong desire to belong—the need for family and what you’ll do to find and keep it.
With Mary, we first need to establish whether the two versions of her were a writing flaw due to the constant change in who was dictating her story and her relationship to the boys, which goes against the idea that her characterization was cohesive and fleshed-out but, rather, put together when needed for convenience, or if they both exist because, as stated above, we are seeing the show primarily through the biased lens of the Winchester brothers and come to face facts about the true Mary as they do. Like I said in my previous post, I don’t dislike Mary and I don’t blame her for her death (either one). However, I do have a hard time seeing her as a more nuanced, fleshed-out character than Jack. True, a lot of her problems are more adult in nature considering she has to struggle with losing her sons’ formative years and meeting them as whole adults she knows almost nothing about, all because of a choice she made before they were born.
However, her personal struggles being more “mature” in nature (as they center primarily on parental battles) doesn’t necessarily mean her story has layers and Jack’s does not. They are entirely different but sometimes interconnected in a way that adds to both of their arcs, like Mary taking Jack on as an adoptive son which gives her the moments of parenting she lost with Sam and Dean, and Jack having Mary as a parental figure who understands and supports him gives him that sense of belonging he had just been struggling with to the point of running away while he is also given the chance to show “even monsters can do good”.
I’d also argue that Jack being many ages at once isn’t poor writing so much as a metaphor for how, even if you’re forced to grow up fast, that doesn’t mean you’re a fully equipped adult. I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but I believe Jack simultaneously taking a lot of responsibility and constantly trying to prove to others he’s useful while having childish moments is relatable to some who were forced to play an adult role at a young age. He proves a number of times that he doesn’t need everyone to take care of him, but he also has limited life experience and, as such, will make some mistakes while he’s also being a valuable member of the group. Jack constantly exists on a fine line in multiple respects. Some may see that as a writing flaw but it is who the character was conceived to be: the balance between nature or nurture, between good and evil, between savior and devil.
Now, I was also frustrated Mary was “fridged” for a second time. It really provided no other purpose than to give the brothers more man pain to further the plot along. However, this can exist while also acknowledging that the way it happened and the subsequent fallout for Jack was also unnecessary and a sign of blatant hypocrisy from Dean, primarily, and Sam.
And, yes, Jack can be different things at once because, I mean, can’t we all? If Mary can be both the perfect mother and the flawed, independent, distant parent, can’t Jack be the sweet kid who helps his father-figures process their own feelings on fatherhood while also being a lost young-adult forcing them to face their failures? Both characters contain multitudes because, I mean, we all do.
I can provide articles or posts on Jack’s characterization and popularity along with Mary’s if needed, but for now I think this is a long enough ramble on my thoughts and feelings. I’m happy to discuss more, my messenger is always open for (polite) discussion. Until then, I’m going to leave it at we maybe agree to disagree.

12x06 - Mary is Dean - So Jody Mills, You Learn that Boy Some Soft
Sam and Dean stop at Jody’s - Their mom has walked out and maybe they needed some motherly affection from Platonic mom Jody.                                                                 -  or  - Dean needs to hear that you can both be badass AND have feelings watch chick flicks. Whhhaaaaaahhhhh?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toxic Feminity. [“Pick a bloody side!” ‘Or What?’] I don’t think it’s a coincidence that in this episode we get Max Banes, a cute and openly gay witch who hunts with his sibling. Below the cut for analysis of 12x06, Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox (cont. under the cut)
Mary is being portrayed as a stand in for Dean, or at least Performing!Dean.  In 12x03 she likes Bacon! She likes loud music! We must be the saaaaammmme peeeerrrrrson. ‘We are so related.’
Tumblr media
When we met young Mary in ‘In the Beginning’ she was a stand in for Sam.  Mary wanted to get out of that hunter life her father brought her up in, she got dragged in by tragedy but that wasn’t her goal.  Like Sam, Mary has come to be drawn to hunter life by 12x06 to hide in it from her pain.
Instead, in season 12, the show has made Mary a stand in for Dean.  Mary had herself her very own muscle car as a stand in for performance personality baby, she was ‘saving people. hunting things.’ she inspired another hunter ... but that’s a different essay.  [Common! Bacon and loud music guys! they are like, clearly the same person!] Mary is scared.  She blames herself for everything the Winchesters have endured, not just in the 12 years of the show but over their entire lives.  If Mary hadn’t have made the demon deal, she reasoned, none of it would have happened.
[Okay let’s just move on and not note that actually Sam was always going to be Lucifer’s perf vessel and Dean, Michael’s, and let’s FURTHER ignore the fact that John would have been dead and Mary would have been single mom to Dean and Sam wouldn’t have existed. Not mentioning, because it does not matter, nope. nope. nope. ahem. anyway.]
It’s not just bacon - it’s about guilt - it’s about not feeling you are deserving of love - that you deserve to be saved.   I have just NO IDEA WHO THAT MIGHT SOUND LIKE. [cue Cas/Misha in my brain].
With this cloud hanging over Dean, the boys go to visit Jody and we learn the truly shocking news.  Jody. Watches. Chick Flicks. Mind. Blown. Yes, Dean, you aren’t the only one. You don’t have to hide your secret shame. We already know that you like chick flicks.  You admitted it in the season 11 finale.
Now that we’ve established that, Jody can challenge him on actual feelings once Mary shows up.   Awww, surrogate mom meets Mary mom.
“Is that why you spent the entire ride up here telling me in extreme excruciating detail about how you killed Hitler but uh, you neglected to mention that somehow your mom is back from the dead?”
Jody might be teaching Dean that it’s okay to have feelings. But fake Dean Mary has some learnin’ to do too.   Billie is talking about Mary the way she will later talk about dean in season 13 .  But now Dean can step up and talk about feelings, sort of.  Mary’s learning that she didn’t just condemn Asa, she saved him and he saved others.
Mary: “I didn’t ask to come back here” Billie: “No, you didn’t, and you hate it. You’re all alone.” Dean: “Well, she’s not alone.   ... Billie says if Mary dies she can give Mary a ‘one way ticket upstairs’ Mary looks at the boys, clearly worried they are about to lose her again, and tells Billie, “Well... Then... Then I guess you’re just going to have to wait.”
Dean watched this - Dean’s learning that model him is choosing to live over going straight to heaven.  Both characters develop, continuing to move that needle.  There’s a reason this episode title focuses on the life of Asa Fox, not the death. In a few short episodes Sam and Dean will make a deal with Billie, prepared to trade one of their lives to progress the story.  Mary steps in, ready to trade the life she may not even want for their lives.
It’s Cas that will step in, kill Billie, and lose his absolute shit at them again like DEAN YOU CAN’T KEEP DOING THIS TO ME. STAY ALIVE. -  FUCKING WINCHESTERS!   - [Just love for Cas and what he does to this fam and comment if you think that car scene involved holding hands.]
Dean’s daddy Kripke ending didn’t have him learn, didn’t have him change, didn’t have his character develop from believing that the only way for Dean to find peace was to die, in a blaze of glory. If Mary can learn that there is value in staying alive - trying to return to the Mary that was yearning for family life, then so can Dean.
This continues in the clues as to why the finale was so tragic to fans.   Finale Dean died the way Kripke always envisioned, he got Chuck’s Dean after we spent 15 years watching this performing!boy grow into a [more anyway] emotionally mature man. Dean was on a 15 year arc of overcoming this nonsense, overcoming toxic masculinity, overcoming trauma response, this self hatred.
Finale!Dean doesn’t have to be your headcanon. And that’s okay.

I would love for you to talk more indepth about the montage. To me it feels so off and weird. Almost like a parody? So many scenes in it are "funny" moments that just don't make sense in the context of an emotional overview of the road so far... (Like all the scenes where Dean is eating, Donna with donut dust on her face, Sam getting hit during the game show.) I don't know. Isn't the montage supposed to make me nostalgic, teary-eyed? This one definitely doesn't do it for me!
Here I am! Yes, I absolutely agree. The montage is Weird(TM). It’s kind of a tone rollercoaster. It’s very full of funny/silly moments, with some serious moments smacked in. And it definitely looks like... there’s something about it.
For an easier consultation I will reference the gifs I have made of the montage sequence here.
[Gif 1] It starts pretty much like I’d expect a Supernatural goodbye montage to start. The two brothers meeting for the first time in the pilot, a reminder of their childhood with John, their banter still from the pilot, a couple moments of them driving in the car in the first seasons, Dean saving Lucas in 1x03 which is the first Dean-heavy episode and also an extremely symbolic moment for Dean’s entire journey - just think at how Lucas as a mirror was still relevent during the “drowning” Michael possession arc. Everything feels normal so far. We’re starting from the beginning! Now--
[Gif 2] Interesting and weird choices start here. Them pretending to be high school teachers from After School Special 4x13 - actually a very iconic moment for the fandom, remember that post of Dean in shorts from that episode that you had to reblog when it came on your dash? (Actually I’m not sure if I ever reblogged it lol.) Dean celebrating getting young again from The Curious Case of Dean Winchester 5x07 (and Jensen showing off his agility). The two of them showing their FBI badges to Jesse Turner’s biological mother in 5x06. Dean mowing the lawn of Mary’s house in the Djinn dream and immediately after Jess and Sam kissing also in the Djinn dream, from What Is And What Should Never Be 2x20. Then Dean after killing the witch when he was under the memory loss spell, in Regarding Dean 12x11. Sam happy when they celebrate Christmas in A Very Supernatural Christmas 3x08. Them being “lucky” under the effect of the rabbit’s foot in Bad Day At Black Rock 3x03. Sam also happy in Baby 11x04.
Again the present, then the montage starts again with the water-related ghost from Red Sky At Morning 3x06, a Bela episode, and then Bela herself from her first episode, 3x03 again.
What do these moments have in common? Not all of them, but for many of them I’d say reality being manipulated. The Djinn dream, the rabbit foot, Dean’s aging, the Antichrist... and it’s not over yet. Also, them pretending to be teachers, agents etc - not “real”.
[Gif 3] The tone suddenly gets more serious and relevant to current events: Chuck in The Monster at the End of This Book 4x18 (eh). Death in Two Minutes to Midnight 5x21 (the first appearance of Death, while now we’ve had Billie’s last and a very short-lived new one), and then two major moments from Lazarus Rising - Dean emerging from the grave and finding the handprint on his shoulder. Crowley’s first episode, Abandon All Hope 5x10. Zachariah’s death in Point Of No Return 5x18. Anna from The Song Remains The Same 5x13, where she is the antagonist having been brainwashed successfully by heaven. Michael burning and Sam jumping in the cage with Michael in 5x22, then another moment from 4x01 (the brothers hugging after reuniting). A moment from The French Mistake 6x15 (reality fuckery again!). Sam in Frontierland 6x18.
[Gif 4] Reality fuckery continues with Becky marrying Sam in 7x08. Funnily enough, this is the peak of Becky’s obsessive behavior which she went to therapy for and grew away of - it definitely emphasizes how far Becky has come. Donna’s first appeance in 9x13. That iconic shot of Dean in Bloodlust 2x03 because he’s pretty. Charlie’s first appearance in 7x20 while she dances to Walking On Sunshine (relevant?), Kevin’s first appearance in 7x21 when he becomes a prophet (lots of firsts). Abaddon’s first appearance in As Time Goes By 8x12. Then there’s the first appearance of the bunker, in the next episode, a couple shots in fact. Then more 4x01, Ruby pretending to mistake Dean for the pizza man (eh). Then more present...
This section seems to be mostly “first appearances” - including Ruby’s s4 meatsuit, i.e. Genevieve’s first appearance.
[Gif 5] We suddenly jump to more recent events with Kelly and Jack in heaven in Byzanthium 4x08. Jack’s iconic hello from 4x16 Don’t Go In The Woods. Dean teaching Jack how to drive in 14x07 Unhuman Nature. But then we suddenly go from Jack things to something completely different on the surface: two consecutive moments from Changing Channels 5x08, including the iconic Nutcracker scene, and Sully from Just My Imagination. We are actually back to the previous theme: reality fuckery. Gabriel’s episode was about placing them in “television shows”, Sully, while real, is literally a child’s “imaginary friend”. And then... a moment from the cartoon part of Scoobynatural! It doesn’t get more reality fuckery than that. Oh, wait! Charlie and Dorothy going to Oz in 9x04. That’s a pretty strong contender. Dean being hit in the face by a fairy in 6x09 - also about a realm Dean briefly went to. And, in case we felt like we hadn’t gotten enough 4x01 yet, Pamela’s first appearance (her last, albeit a hallucination, was about the whole “How come you only want what you can't have?” thing).
[Gif 6] We continue again with a mixture of firsts and weird things. Ellen’s first appearance in 2x02, Dean and Cas in 4x18 (we saw Chuck from that episode earlier), Jody’s first appearance in 5x15 Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid. Rufus in 6x04 Weekend At Bobby’s (not his first but a good episode...), Garth in 9x12 Sharp Teeth (not his first but the first in which he is a werewolf and is married... relevant to recent lamp events??), Missouri in 1x09 (her first appearance).
Then Gabriel from 13x21 Beat The Devil (an episode where he plays a trick on Lucifer) and Rowena from the same scene (in fact a scene where they’re flirting).  Then Eileen coming back to life in 15x06 and smiling at Sam. Jo flirting with Dean in 2x02 - her first appearance, again. Funnily enough, she had been introduced as a love interest, but ended up being repurposed as a sisterly figure. Tempted to say it’s relevant in an ironic way. Mary in 14x11 Damaged Goods, when Dean has a goodbye mother-son moment with her. Amara in 11x09 Oh Brother Where Art Thou when she was looking for her brother. Then Lucifer in two different vessels (12x07 Rock Never Dies and 12x21, when Lucifer regains control over the vessel).
Then Metatron doing the find a wife make babies speech to Cas in 8x23! Relevant??? Dun dun dun. Then Ketch for some reason (the first episode where we see his face, 12x08 LOTUS).
[Gif 7] Then Jo/Anael in 13x13, another first appearance. (I cropped these horribly I should have cut them when the present happens lol.)
Sandwiched between two shots from the present, Dean Sam Mary and John having dinner together in 14x13 Lebanon.
Then we start again with Dean riding Larry in 12x11, Dean and Cas dressed as cowboys in 13x06 (mini pattern here...), Asmodeus with the archangel blade in 13x13 (insert meta about Asmodeus in Christian lore here), and the really intriguing “Intermission” shot from the play in 10x05.
[Gif 8] To continue a certain pattern we might be tempted to see, Dean eating piecake from 14x06 Optimism (an episode about a distorted version of romantic love), then Dean eating noodles from 10x13 Halt & Catch Fire (the ghost is a husband that passes on thanks to his wife). Dean after his dentistry session with Garth in 15x10. Meg from 6x10 Caged Heat (the episode with the pizza man porn). Dean and Sam investigating in 4x12 Criss Angel Is a Douchebag (an episode about growing old poorly). Crowley in 10x16 Paint It Black (that episode). Dean playing that game in 14x17 Game Night (the episode Cas calls for God, and when Mary dies - the one playing the game was God...). Sam and Dean getting out of the car in 13x05 when they visit the traumatized kid (peak mourning Dean episode...). Then we go into reality fuckery territory again with 14x15 Peace of Mind, Sam under the psychic’s control and Cas disgruntled about it.
[Gif 9] Mick Davies from 12x16 Ladies Drink Free, when he learnt a lesson about monsters. Dean geeking out about the Hatchet Man - so heavy with mirror significances - in 14x04 Mint Condition. Belphegor - Jack’s dark mirror - in 15x03 The Rupture, the break-up episode. Donna’s first episode again, this time Dean and she eating donuts. Dean, Sam and Mary hugging in 12x22 after the confrontation in Mary’s head. Kaia in 13x09 The Bad Place, when Jack uses her to find the way to where Mary is (Mary pattern?). Claire&co rescuing Jody and Donna in 13x10 Wayward Sisters. Dean in 1944 dresses as a sailor in 11x14 The Vessel. Baby nyooming in 15x11 The Gamblers...
Aaand more Changing Channels, the genital herpes ad. It’s almost like reality fuckery is a theme. Followed by Sam drinking the anti-cold concoction at Garth’s in 15x10 and the two of them outside the monster fighting pit in the same episode. Then Cas, Dean, Sam and Jack on a video call with Ketch in 14x09 The Spear when they talk about the egg to trap Michael.
[Gif 10] We stay in the same episode with the four of them heading to Michael. Then the four of them celebrating Jack’s return to life (after Cas’ deal with the Empty). More present, and then the iconic “we’ve got work to do” [trunk closes] moment from the pilot.
So: some of these moments seem like genuine moments you’ll want to put in a montage, but there’s a weird predominance of characters smiling and looking happy or goofy. It’s kind of... not exactly representative of the show as a whole, you know? There are moments that fit as, you know, iconic steps in the story, but surprisingly few, and many moments you’d expect to be in a “final” montage are blatantly not there. Several moments with, let’s put it like this, suspicious meta connotations. Moments that, well, we don’t know what happens in the finale yet, but smell like they might be relevant to future developments. (Metatron’s speech to newly human Cas anyone?)
What really strikes me is the amount of moments connected to reality being manipulated or distorted in some way. Lots of Changing Channels, fantasy elements of various kinds (the Djinn dream, Scoobynatural, Oz, the imaginary friend Becky’s wedding to Sam, the fairy, ...), them acquiring luck (s3) or losing it (s15), and so on. It’s almost like the sequence is telling us something...

Hey Alie :)) (I’m not the “can I describe a fic” anon but I do have the same problem!!)
I read a fic… probably years ago, that stuck in my head and when I tell you I’ve sifted through my e n t i r e ao3 and lj history😭
It was that Cas is siblings with Gabriel and is being raised by Naomi/maybe his mom is Naomi.
His best friend is Sam, and Mary and John are sort of the model loving parents to Naomi’s strict awfulness. Cas’s whole friend group is huge, all the staples, it’s him, Gabriel, anna, Kevin, Charlie, etc. Dean is the cool but aloof older brother. Chuck is also in the friend group but is an alcoholic and only shows up sporadically.
Fic opens on the whole gang playing video games in Sam’s basement and charlie talking about being a lesbian, which prompts gabe to admit he’s bi, which Cas didn’t know… and then I think sam is ~interested~ in gabe’s bisexuality for ~reasons~.
We learn throughout the fic that Dean was the first one to meet Cas and gabe when they were young, and there’s a flashback scene where Cas n gabe are in a storefront of some kind? And the windows are broken… and Dean saves them from the situation somehow? Anyway Dean and Cas get closer again over the course of the fic even though Cas is mainly Sam’s friend.
Cas and Dean delude themselves for a while into thinking they’re just “practicing dating” and that Dean is “helping” Cas get used to being around guys and holding their hands so that he won’t lose it when it “really” happens…
There’s a sleepover at the Winchester’s house where they hook up a little bit, and then another bit at the end where mary and Naomi take the boys on a summer beach trip and they ride there in the impala and dean and Cas consistently hook up throughout the trip… and sabriel is happening in the background…?
I’ve been searching for this fic RELIGIOUSLY because it’s writing of the beginnings of teen romance rang so true for me and my experience with my boyfriend and it was so beautiful <\3 but I can’t find itttt have you heard of it?
I’m sorry it doesn’t ring any bells for me :( I hope you find it or someone else recognized this and helps you out, it clearly really stuck with you!

Hi! I’ve been asking around about a lost fic and wondered if you might know it
In it, Cas is in junior year of high school and is Gabriel’s younger sibling and is being raised by Naomi/maybe his mom is Naomi. You are in luck, anon! Folks in the chat I frequent think it's this one:
Fireworks and Other Bright Ideas by pbmolecules
Summary: High school AU. Castiel knows what he wants. He wants his best friend’s brother, Dean. What he doesn’t know, is how to ever make that happen. Hell, he’s never even kissed anyone. Oh, and no one knows he’s gay. And, oh yeah, Dean’s straight.
Dean seems larger than life. An impossibility. So, when he offers to help him learn to relax around guys, Castiel thinks he just might die.
Castiel was willing to learn anything Dean could teach him.
It turns out, Dean has a thing or two to learn.
*
Hope that's the one you had in mind!
