i think the responce to transmisandry/transandrophobia has been mostly reactionary in that trans people (in my experience, transmasc and transfem and nonbinary alike) refuse to interact with the whole premise partly due to the underlying problems of "misandry" as a whole and partly due to bad actors' assimilation of the topic, but it's definitely unfair and dishonest to throw all transmasculine experiences with discrimination under the blanket term "transphobia" while separately recognizing the issue of transmisogyny [in the specific misogyny-based transfeminine experiences with discrimination]

the common (and very valid) justification for not wanting to see misandry as a problem relies on the correct premise that cis men, by default, face almost no gendered discrimination, and as such it is counterproductive to discuss such discrimination in the same optic that you would use to describe misogyny; transmisogyny is the extension of the common variety misogyny in a way which is specific to transfeminine people, with how some form of violence [mostly] do not apply to trans women and how other forms of violence are applied disproportionately, or are unique to trans women. in this sense, there is a strong case to be made about the existence of gender-specific violence against trans men too: they [mostly] do not face some forms of gendered violence, and have other forms of gendered violence, again, applied to them disproportionately

since i'm russian one of the examples of such disproportionately applied violence would be the draft: trans men who changed their documents when that was still a thing that could happen can be drafted (since F64.0 is no longer a valid reason to avoid the draft), and, henceforth, have to face unique transphobic violence, that, i hope, needs no explanation. yes, trans women who haven't changed their documents can be drafted too, and cis men and cis women can be drafted also, but:

1. some experiences of transmisogyny can be shared between not only transfeminine people (which is why the whole TMA/TME doesn't really make sense, if you happen to live in a v. supportive environment even as a trans woman you could experience no transmisogyny in your life, and vice versa); some experiences of other forms of discrimination can happen outside the particular group they're specific to also; there's no reason why this wouldn't apply here

2. it's painfully obvious that trans men are going to have very different experiences with the draft than trans women or cis women or cis men.

though, one could argue that at this point you're just making up more and more convenient little boxes with names that sound catchy for the purpose of melting down everyone's unique experiences in a pot, and that this could be counter-productive with how many identities exist out there... but this kinda goes both ways and why not just call all prejudice and acted out discrimination against specific groups of people "chauvinism" and be done with it. having specific words for specific topics is nice

(many things are based on my own experience. Especially the dysphoria related things (so when i talk about Leo not being a real boy it is what he thinks bc of dysphoria. It’s not true.))

Once he got a good enough passing, he did everything he could so ppl will assume he’s cis.

Don’t ask me how he gots his hands on hrt. It’s a long and weird story.

The wilderness school was very strict about not mixing girls and boys in dorms.

Piper was his roommate, that’s how they met.

In their memories created by Hera, Jason has kinda always known he’s trans. So Leo never bothered to hide it from Jason (as he does with others).

But Jason doesn’t have much (any) education on transidentity… At first he assumed Leo was a cis guy, and then some things were a bit confusing (why was he in fem dorms ? Otherwise. Leo has no desire to get out of his comfortable closet.

Sometimes he acts a little bit macho. He’s aware he’s acting like an asshole but he’s terrified of being perceived as feminine.

Why does he try to flirt with every girl he sees ? Another attempt to pass better (and comfort himself in his fragile masculinity) by copying stereotypical boys' things.

Piper helped him to go easier on himself. And he had an actual proper talk with Jason.

The first person he actually came out to was probably Annabeth, bc she’s cool and wise and nice.

And then he saw it actually was ok. She didn’t treat him any differently, she didn’t tell anyone else. She was cool with it.

He then told Frank and Hazel, with Piper’s help (mostly to explain to Hazel all those new terms). And it also went very great ! He then also told Percy and Nico.

He’s not entirely out, just to his closest friends and his siblings at camp. And it’s enough.

He still overbinds, but he has ppl to (discreetly) remind him to take care of himself. He’s still very dysphoric but his loved ones know how to remind him that he is their brother, an amazing boy.

Hey, trans guy here, and while I’m not personally interested in getting bottom surgery, I am interested in writing t4t erotica involving guys who have. Do you have any writing tips on that front or just stuff you wanna see from what I imagine is a pretty underserved niche?

One thing that would be cool to see represented: not everyone who gets bottom surgery is a top! I’m sure not, though strangely my interest in playing that role has increased since I had the work done. You can be the biggest anal queen this side of Pornhub and still get bottom surgery. Only makes sense, right—if we can accept that having a dick doesn’t automatically make a cis man a top, the same is also true of trans men & transmascs.

Some things about a healed-up phallo dick from my experience, under a cut:

The head is VERY sensitive, and the base is very sensitive. Everything in between that has erotic sensation but in an “Mm that’s nice” kinda way until you add pressure too. Once it’s healed up, it is definitely possible to orgasm from stimulating it. How long that takes will vary, though. I was told it might be up to a year, but I have a crazy healing factor and had it back in like 2-3 months.

If you couldn’t successfully kill the hair follicles on a permanent basis via electrolysis and/or laser prior to surgery, there’ll be hair. (It’s not THAT weird. Plenty of cis men out there have hair on their shafts too!)

If you had a tattoo on your donor site, you’ve got a tattoo on your dick now, lol. It might be unrecognizable depending on where it was originally (especially on the inner wrist/forearm).

There’s a scar up the underside right in the middle and all around the base. The scar up the middle of your scrotum will look similar enough to the natural seam of an OEM scrotum that it’s not really notable.

The scrotum won’t have all the wrinkles an OEM one does at rest.

No foreskin, more’s the pity, but the head looks VERY much like a circumcised OEM penis once it’s healed.

Different donor sites tend to produce different results. The non-dominant forearm is preferred because they take a stretch of nerve with it and it’ll typically have the least subcutaneous fat, so you tend to get the best sensation and shape. With the back or thigh, bigger guys might end up with a Coke can cock, which cis men THINK they want but it’s a different story when it’s always that size.

Recovery can be rough. I took 3 months off work and needed it. The first two and a half weeks were the worst because I had a suprapubic catheter in, and dear gods I hated being cathed. Felt like I had to pee at all times, even right after emptying the bag. Worth it, though, absolutely worth it.

If you do radial arm flap, you’ll end up with two scars aside from the ones on your groin: a rectangular graft that goes most of the way around (NOT all the way around; that leads to necrosis!) the forearm from the wrist to about halfway to the elbow; and a less-obvious rectangular scar shaped like an open book on the top of one thigh where they take a split-thickness (meaning, only part of the way down) skin donation for your arm graft. The graft is pretty obvious, especially if you’re chubby, but my leg scar is extremely subtle and continues to get fainter as my skin cycles itself out.

The graft will be forever hairless.

People will probably glance at the graft, and they might stare if they’re rude, but in the…what’s it been, almost two years I’ve had it, exactly one person has actually asked about it and that was when it was still fresh and extra gnarly-looking. I told her “It’s a graft, it’s not as bad as it looks” and there were no follow-up questions.

Because there’s nerve harvested from the inside of the forearm, sensation comes to the penis faster than it comes to the graft. The cut nerve DOES regrow! But for the first…I’d say 6-9 months? Ish? I could only feel pressure on the tissue UNDER the graft. Sensation is still duller there, but at this point I can feel temperature, moisture, and texture well enough.

Recovery includes physical therapy for the donor arm. The more you move that wrist early and consistently, the less stiff it will be when it heals. I’ll never be able to touch my thumb to my wrist again, but I also can’t do that on the right either now, so I think that’s more to do with my age than the surgery (I used to be a lot more hypermobile, but I am no longer a spring chicken).

Learning to pee standing up is a messy affair that involves cleaning the toilet and doing laundry a lot. Once you’ve got it down, though, it’s pretty awesome.

Chasers will now ghost me the instant they find out I am not biologically available to be their sexual experiment.

There are a LOT of other options for bottom surgery, but I only have passing familiarity with them based on hearing firsthand accounts and what I learned from my surgeon. Personally, I weighed meta vs phallo heavily; being able to get a natural erection with meta or Centurion was a very attractive prospect, but it just doesn’t produce a size that I would find satisfying in terms of my own self-image, so I went with phallo. There was never a question in my mind as to wanting vaginectomy with it. Beyond the unbelievable convenience of being able to pee standing up without an STP device, I fuckin’ HATED my front hole, and I REALLY hated being pressured about having things done to it (mostly by cis men, but not always) all the time.

Can you be a trans man and not trans masc? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I’m just feeling a little confused about my identity. In a lot of ways I dress kinda androgynously but definitely more masculine than ever feminine. I don’t feel like a super binary man, but I still feel like I am a MAN. It seems like for nonbinary men, transmasc is often used? But I’m not sure how much I actually identify with the label, bc I don’t really feel like I am super super masculine?? I feel more like a man who just likes more androgynous things? I also like a lot of things generally associated with femininity liek long hair and painting my nails. But idk. Maybe I’m just getting confused and this is just semantics but I’m feeling very uncertain rn I don’t even know if this ask makes sense I’m sorry

Hey kiddo, thank you for reaching out, it's a really good question and I'll try and explain how I see it from my own perspective as a transmasc myself. Labels and words that we use to describe ourselves are there to describe our own personal experience of the world and our identities to others without a fifty page essay on how we feel. Sometimes not every one fits, even if others think it's supposed to, and that's okay.

Transmasc is an umbrella term for genderqueer people who feel connected to masculinity, so it's really up to the person whether they chose to use it or not. You can 100% be a trans guy and not be transmasc. Only you can control how you identify and you should go with what feels most comfortable and most like you.

honestly i love every shen yuan trans hc I've come across so i kinda hc as every identity ever lol but for today I'll share my personal favorite one (?? which i relate to a bit bc i love to project

so thinking about shen yuan who was transmasc in his original life, even tho he's wealthy, and his family is loving they don't rly support him in that sense, and he dies and transmigrates before he can medically transition. He had complex feelings about getting gender envy from binghe and also feeling attracted to him, which he completely suppressed bc he didn't want to "seem like a straight girl" and he wasn't gay either, no way, he just admires binghe.

his username is also a way of compensating dysphoria and an easy way to get people to gender him correctly online, he also feels weirdy understood by airplane (who is also transmasc) which he will never admit, there's little hints here and there in pidw about how he views gender.

when he finds himself in sqq's body (i like both the idea of sj being trans or cis) he feels quite comfortable and at ease since he passes here and sqq's identity is respected. but despite all of that, when the wife plot starts hitting him he feels dysphoric again, which confuses him bc he's supposed to be "fine" now but these roles being forced on him make him uncomfortable. After the novel's events tho he slowly starts rediscovering femininity and the wide range of roles he can take, and he realizes he actually doesn't hate the idea of being binghe's wife, he accepts his own motherly instincts and stops repressing his complex feelings about gender.

sqq realizes he doesn't really hate the idea of being any gender in particular, but rather having it be out of his control and it being forced on him. When he realizes that, he's free to accept himself however he feels like being that day, he also develops a very "mix and match" attitude with gender, doesn't really care much about labels just about what makes both him and binghe happy. sqh is relieved that he's finally laid-back about it, but still teases him

bonus: transmasc binghe isn't the most popular but he's very dear to me, i like to imagine sqq teaching him everything he learned in his previous life

i see your point about degendering as defensible, and misgendering as openly hateful. but i think the bigot can escalate further, switching back to degendering as part of dehumanization. "it", "that thing", and so on. i did make an oversimplification, but it was because your posts made me understand what the difference in feeling between types of transphobia i have experienced was, and i got very eager to share!

i am genderqueer, androgynous, and visibly varsex. i have gotten deliberately misgendered both as my original legal gender and its opposite. i have also been aggressively degendered. and actually the underlying insults were the opposite than in my example. the misgendering tried to cast me as delusional, and the degendering as an abject other, a monster.

but i do think what you described shows traces of these two angles of attack. "slipping", because they haven't actually unlearned as much as they like to think.

but i think it isn't useful to sort this kind of more 'abstract' or high concept transphobia based on target identities. these are frameworks and weapons picked by the wielders, often without consistent logic, and can be used against anyone. the unique experiences are in my opinion more practical and specific, like in most parts of the world nonbinary people having no right legal gender marker to pick. so that's how exorsexism is a thing and imo your discussion doesn't threaten to invalidate it.

That makes sense! Yeah, I def didn't think about "it/its" degendering in that context, and I feel like that specific way of degendering trans folks has different (but overlapping) sort of intention - I don't get the same kind of dehumanization from "they/them", personally.

That said, I totally agree that the usefulness in differentiating these different types of transphobia is more in why people utilize them than it is the group of people they are attempting to target.

To use one example: I think "transphobia targeting transmasculinity" is probably a more accurate definition of "transandrophobia" than "transphobia targeting transmascs", in a lot of ways, because the people weaponizing transphobia against transmasculinity care less about hurting people who are transmasculine, and more about a fight against the concept of transmasculinity itself. They aren't trying to reveal everyone who is transmasculine in order to oppress them, they are trying to force transmasculine people to repress and hide that part of themselves in order to conform.

And I think that's true for transphobia generally, and queerphobia, and a lot of other forms of oppression. Which is also why bigotry itself tends to be fairly undiscerning; the people calling you a "faggot" on the street aren't going to correct themselves and apologize if you tell them you're straight, actually. They don't care whether you are a faggot, they're punishing the presence of faggotry as a concept.

Anyway, I'm kinda rambling here; I think we're on the same page, too, I'm just enjoying seeing & exploring new ideas and connections!

I’ve been trying to figure out for sure what alterous means for me, bc I can’t help but be curious if my feelings for my girlfriend are “Romantic like with a capital R” lol, or if it’s in a vague abstract-y demi/recipro maybe alterous maybe romantic way lol.

I found this description of alterous when I was reading Reddit posts about it, and it basically said “I want to be close to you and around you and do everything with you, I just don’t care what form it takes and how we categorize ourselves.” And I totally get that. At the same time, I was the one who asked if we wanted to start officially dating bc honestly I wanted to be able to say to people “I have a partner! I have a girlfriend!!!” And I wanted that label for us too bc I just wanted that feeling of, yes we are committed to each other. But… it didn’t exactly feel like a romantic instinct to wanna call them my partner? And now that I’m thinking about it, my ex and I considered each other as boyfriends, even tho we definitely weren’t dating in any conventional sense, it was a qpr and I had no romantic feelings towards them, not even the “idk if this is romance or not” feelings like I have with my girlfriend. So yeah I think I wanted the label just so I could clearly say, “yes I’m their boyfriend and she’s my girlfriend.” But I honestly wouldn’t have cared that much if she didn’t care about official labels, but I also knew that she would love it, so I wanted the label for her too… and the way we talk and act, definitely looks romantic and the way I act when I’m rambling about them to my friends, I probably look like anyone else who is romantically in love with someone. But I think my point is, I don’t care whether or not our relationship feels “Romantic with a capital R” or not. I like that it feels kinda romantic coded bc I like doing and being cute with her in a way that’s probably romance coded, but I don’t need it to be. I guess… I guess I would consider my feelings towards her as romance-inclined alterous. And I could use my gender identity as an example. I’m nonbinary, but lean towards transmasc too even tho I don’t always feel “Masculine with a capital M”. I’m alterously in love with her, and it leans towards romantically too but I don’t always feel that “Romance with a capital R.” Huh that actually makes a lot of sense to me.

This turned into a slightly chaotic ramble lol but maybe other people can relate or it’ll help them if they’re trying to figure things out. I’ve sent in quite a few asks the last few days, but honestly this is my favorite place in all of tumblr from the first day I found this so thank you for being here for all of us :)))
