random ask for when you get bored or need to pass time
do you have any shadowgast hcs, ideas, kinks, etc that youve wanted to write but you simply dont have the time or energy for?
Oh so, so many.
A couple months ago I was struck by the funny idea of "what if Caleb knew fuck-all about elves, heard the Shadowhand was 120+ years old before meeting him, expected some kind of Crypt Keeper figure, and was absolutely surprisedpikachu.jpg upon laying eyes on the man" and decided to run with it—and then I decided to make it a deep, dark, fucked-up canon divergence corruption arc.
"I'll just put my main two WIPs on hold for a little while," I said to myself. "This shouldn't take too long," I said. "I'll be back to working on Arranged Marriage AU and Widogast's Monster Manual in no time," I said.
😐
Couple of months later I'm 36k words in and just really getting started.
Also on the back burner as outlines, WIPs, or both:
Evilgast blood play PWP
Essek is a stone top, and when Caleb presses for the reason he's unprepared for the rage and pain he uncovers
Caleb uses transmutation magic to enchant a variety of strap-ons for (trans) Essek to a) alleviate dysphoria, b) use on Caleb, and c) to help him decide on his transmogrification goals
Eventual epilogue/sequel to WMM about Caleb's dragon children
Caleb Trash Saga, Pt 1 of 4
90s AU in which Essek is a trust fund grad student who slums it with ne'er-do-wells to thumb his nose at his religious conservative family, and Caleb is a homeless punk musician/college dropout trying to reinvent himself; I don't have an actual plot for this yet so at the moment I'm revolted to say that until I do so it's just a fucking coffee shop AU for goths
so much fisting.
Essek is an ungenerous lover; Caleb sets out to teach him how to give good head (leading by example, of course)
Medplay in which Essek pretends to give a lecture on human anatomy with a condescending, exotifying, objectifying, altogether kinda racist bent, with a naked and enthusiastic Caleb as his "sedated" (actually fully awake) display specimen
Winter Soldier Bren and the aftermath thereof
Would that I had much more free time and much less executive dysfunction.

In 3rd grade (1989 or so), my G&T class were given an assignment to each do a presentation on an animal whose name started with a letter assigned by the teacher. There were only like 9 of us but I ended up with X. (In retrospect I figure this was because our teacher knew I was an incorrigible animal nerd who loved a challenge.)
So I hit the books—yes, the actual physical books—and in the encyclopedia volume containing X I struck gold: I learned of the existence of Xenopeltis unicolor, the sunbeam snake, and it instantly became my favorite reptile.
It still is today.
And as of earlier this month, I have realized yet another childhood dream and obtained a sunbeam snake of my very own.

This is Aurora. She's very docile. Her scales feel kind of like pleather. And photos do not do justice to how intense and vibrant her iridescence is in person.
I am a happy Wyrm.

Genuine question. I'm very passionate about conservation and helping animals and the planet, but a lot of people say you cannot be a conservationist without being vegan. Issue is..I don't wanna be vegan, I have AFRID and can't do it. I've tried. I saw your vegan posts and were curious your thoughts on those type of claims!
My thoughts on those type of claims are that it's pretty damned interesting who, specifically, they exclude.
They leave behind disabled people like yourself with medical and/or psychiatric conditions that make a vegan lifestyle impossible.
They leave behind Indigenous peoples such as the Inuit who live in places where agriculture is poor or impossible, and/or ones where no one can reasonably afford the costs of produce on account of shipping prices.
They leave behind the urban, suburban, and rural people who live in food deserts...who are statistically likely to be racialized.
They leave behind the unhoused and otherwise impoverished who must choose calorie-rich food to survive...who are statistically likely to be racialized, disabled, and/or queer.
They leave behind and deny the existence and invaluable work of Indigenous peoples who have done just fine stewarding the land while eating meat and using animal products for millennia.
They advocate for the extinction of the domesticated honeybee and the replacement of wool and leather with petroleum-based plastic products.
So it sure looks to me like those claims are ableist, racist, classist, colonialist, and homophobic — and thus are full of shit.
To each according to his needs; from each according to his means.

Hey all. LOML, Maisie, needs teeth pulled urgently. The vet bill is $1575 and due within the next few weeks. The surgeon is also a 90 min drive away, so I will need help with gas costs and parking fees. Any help would be appreciated, including sharing the link.

Jimmy has reverted to his kitten-era Big King Cuddler ways as a senior. He’s extremely affectionate. He’s also a bit of a bastard man still. I used to tell people I had two and a half cats. “How do you have half a cat?!” they’d invariably ask. One of them’s half demon, I’d say. He’s mellowed out a lot in his old age (he’s 12)…except when it comes to his arch-nemesis Tigger, and dogs. He is afraid of dogs, but he’s also an ex-feral and can be mean as a rattlesnake when he feels threatened, and his partial Siamese heritage means he’s got a voice like a foghorn…so while he’s afraid of dogs, the dogs are all terrified of him.
Enter Becca. She’s the latest trainee. She’s new. November, one of our kittens, loves Becca, and Becca really liked Novi too. However, Becca got it into her head that it would be smart and fun to chase Novi’s bonded sister Fang around. Not like “haha come on let’s play” chase, but head-down, “I’m going to hurt you” chase. My mom and I verbally corrected Becca when we caught her doing this shit, but almost before we were done doing so, a black blur FLEW at Becca’s face like a flying lemur out of the Gates of Hell itself, and Becca learned the hard way that, friend or not, you DO NOT fuck with November’s sister. Becca steers clear of Fang now.
That was I think two or three nights ago. So with that background in place, tonight Becca decided that it would be smart and fun to fuck with Jimmy the same way. He SWIFTLY explained to her how mistaken she was, both with his foghorn howls of “You are about to meet your fucking doom” warning and the claws he keeps on a hair trigger. The other dogs looked on and looked away as if to say, “Not my business.” Becca once again retreated.
But Jimmy, feeling the pulse of his infernal roots, decided to go one step further.
He sat down in front of the crate that her food bowl was in so that she'd have to get past him to eat, and by that point she was already much too scared of him to try it.

Guess he’s still got a li’l demon in him after all.

i was waiting for you
HII. here's another fanart of a fanfic, this time by @kmackatie, its sleep with benefits!
my plan was to do a BUNCH* of these little fake movie screencaps, but being very honest i don't think i can do all of that now, considering i want other projects to take priority. and that ive done maybe 5 complete images from the story, but now i dont like my choices of colour and style, so i might redo them in the future.
*since i don't plan on continuing this for the time being (or at least taking a really long time to do it), ive put the thumbnails and notes ive made for the story under the cut!!
i did up till.. chapter 7?? bathroom scene, which isnt in my collection of scanned pictures. by god i have such cool compositions for the whole thing in my mind, but it's really tiring to do this! i really really enjoy taking an author's scene and trying to put a visual to it, its like a.. puzzle.. a mental challenge...
genuinely this process taught me a lot and helped me better understand composition and using setting to tell a story. it also made me realise the importance of PLANNING.. which is something i did little of, i was like hm i draw caleb and essek a lot (not really) so i dont need character sheets or planned outfits or whatever (i really did).
anyways, enjoy these stick men and my insane scribbles trying to decipher katie's use of colour in the story.

I went for a hike with one of my favorite humans today and found this little darling sunning themselves on a popular trail. I decided to move them off the path as there were a LOT of bikes whizzing by, and they were so polite! No hissing, no musking, no bites!
@snake-spotted I thought you'd appreciate my new friend too!

Do you know if there are ways to know if a snake from a pet shop has been properly taken care of or not? Asking since i've been visiting some and i saw one with a boa that had some kind of sinking or deformity on his tail, so i'm kinda wary now.
Hello, friend! I'm sorry to tell you that there is not.
I've worked in multiple areas of the pet industry and I've met the full gamut of types of shop owners, and while I don't consider all of them wicked people, some certainly are. Even the best of them have a bottom line to consider. This means that they won't divulge where their animals are coming from so that you can look into a breeder before making a choice, and they're likely buying animals from backyard breeders or bulk importers. This also means that it's unlikely that the animals they're selling will have established health histories.
Having worked at one of if not The biggest reptile chain in Northern California, I saw some horrors that scarred me for life. Among the lesser sins that took place there:
Folks who bred reptiles but didn't have incubators set up could bring their eggs in for incubation services, the price of which was half of the clutch, and the store owner would then sell the resulting babies as "born on-site," which was technically true! But we didn't know the parentage or health potential of any of these animals. We didn't sell incubators in the store for this specific reason.
Surrenders came in regularly from owners who didn't have the time or resources to care for their pets any longer. They went on the sales floor with a price tag the second the previous owner walked out the door. No veterinary care, no health evaluation, no observation period, nothing. If they looked okay they were priced at regular retail price and we were explicitly told to never admit that they had been surrendered. 100% profit.
Any animal that was injured or sickly, no matter where it came from or how it got injured, was tagged as a "surrender" that we would claim was dropped off by a bad former owner and we'd had them cleared by a vet so that we could rehome them. This was a lie. None of them ever got veterinary care, ever.
Enclosures were cleaned regularly but were never properly sterilized between animals. We sold veterinary-grade cleaner in the store but we were not allowed to use it because it was too expensive. We used diluted Lysol!
Again, this is a large reptile chain with multiple stores and mostly positive online reviews* and I wouldn't trust them with a pet rock, let alone anything breathing.
You're much better off getting a snake from a reputable breeder, or at least someone who can answer reasonable questions about feeding, parentage, genetics, any possible health issues, etc.
*the owner actually reported negative reviews and would have employees write good ones while I was there.
