Akira being like, obsessed w loyalty, but having it as a positive(ish) trait is so fun to me. He doesnt outright say it or ever ask for it, but theres like an unspoken bond between the thieves and himself. He asks for it (demands, really) because he gives it in return. Its the classic ‘ride or die’ mentality; he demands trust and loyalty bc he 100% trusts his team. He would not have baited himself into what would be considered his literal death if he was not COMPLETELY and UTTERLY faithful to his team and the cause. He trusted them to fulfill their end of the bargain no matter how difficult that wouldve been for them. And because of their mutual faith in each other, leader to team and team to leader, they all managed to make it out and live another school year.

He has very little regard for his life but hes not necessarily reckless. Hes calculated. And while hes a bit out of sorts in the beginning with all of these new ideas and concepts, he quickly finds his footing later in the year. And bc he is assembling a team of people who are loyal to Him, he can afford to be loyal right back to them. He can afford to be risky if the risk is mitigated by having his team follow up on his actions. This team has to run like a well oiled machine; any hiccups will get the rest of the team caught or worse; hurt or killed.

Ryuji inadvertently sets this trend, bc he is Ride or Die at heart and he somewhat influences Akira on this matter. And its why he is so reluctant to truly incorporate Goro onto the team (at first). Goro IMMEDIATELY clocks Akiras leadership as something heavier than simply ‘i lead this group to keep everyone on the same page’, but he wrongly assumes Akira has some sort of Thing about power. Theres no real power trip; he is not okay with limiting his teams voices on any matter. His ideas are not the end all, be all of any plan; hes Not Shido. I can imagine how tough Saes Palace was for everyone, but they needed to have unwavering faith in each other to pull off such a mindblowing plan.

I dunno where else im going w this, i just like thinking of Goro feeling some kinda way about Akira (and the thieves) unanimously declaring him as the leader of the thieves fully knowing what shady things theyve done up until this point. Someone who claims to change peoples hearts is deciding who gets to keep their free will or not, and to have a team basically say ‘yes hes our leader and we would die for him’ does NOT look good to anyone! Especially to someone who is quite literally killing people on behalf of someone Very Bad! Who then Dies for it!

In his Strikers verse Goro would spend so much time glaring at Zenkichi specifically. Due to his ties with pubsec and his strange union with the Thieves, Goro doesn't trust him in the slightest. With the Thieves having yet another target on their back with the police he doesn't believe for a second that Zenkichi is doing all of this from the good of his heart. He's just another lapdog to the government, and Goro knows that means there's likely motives that's not being said. And even if there isn't (which he refuses to believe that there isn't anything) his time working as a detective and handlings through Shido have taught him that they can't be trusted to begin with. So naturally Zenkichi is no different. He's just another adult using the young for their own personal benefit, and it outright disgusts Goro that the Thieves would let someone like that into their fold. Goro would make those feelings very clear from the jump about how Zenkichi isn't to be trusted and that the Thieves are naive for letting him tag along like this. He knows that can be very hypocritical as they did the same, to an extent, with Goro himself. But the way he perceives Zenkichi to be going about things bothers him greatly. So he has no problems keeping a close eye on him for the short time that he's reunited with everyone. He also can't help but take immense joy in Zenkichi's blunders. He may not add to the teasing of calling him gramps, but he certainly has no problem in mocking and outright laughing when Zenkichi makes even the smallest of mistakes. Being able to laugh at Zenkichi's misery is the only thing that Goro likes about the man.

Oh I think I might be due for another discacc reread soon. Last one was done last September, so it's been 4 months. Less that I need to refresh my memory on things and more that I need to bask in the whole of it to rly get a feel for the characters again. Writing past goro so much rly made me lose touch with current goro I think lol

Yes the boot licking is a problem, but everyone is in char.

shuake works because it feels like akechi's the only one who listens to akira and prompts the otherwise quiet leader to talk.

in a game about defiant teens making their voice heard, goro akechi listens to akira's voice from the get-go. out of detective-sleuthing/work duties, sure, but over time it's clear that akechi genuinely finds akira interesting.

in fact, akechi's confidant route regardless of which game is being played starts with him deeming akira the antithesis to his thesis, a "worthwhile debate partner". akechi values joker's opinions.

its always nice to see people point out that in that one 3rd sem phone call with akechi, its the most involved akira's been in a conversation in-game. i myself remember inserting a lot more input during that story-sequence which usually i can put on autoplay otherwise. akechi, in a whole different reality, still seeks out joker's opinions on it. it's like he trusts no one but him.

and imo this gives a lot of character to akira. he talks the most with akechi. the quietest people have the most on their minds, and it shows with akira. but akira never gets a say in anything, and who would listen? he's less than a nobody in reality since society dictated that. so he pointedly made himself silent, hiding his thoughts beneath an impenetrable mask. during important story moments, akira favors doing more than saying. his teammates and confidants are all directly inspired by his actions over the course of the game.

but with akechi, it's different. actions seem to take a backseat as they continue with their verbal back-and-forth. in rank 7 of royal, they play pool while talking, but it's clear to the outsider that the focus is in the layered conversation they're having. they primarily talk everytime akechi's in the coffee shop, because they dont usually see eachother in their busy schedules. it's not just "hi, hello, how are you?" with them but "i find you and everything you stand for interesting. let's talk more."

there's something to be said about how two people with vastly different and opposing views seek eachother out to further discuss things instead of antagonizing eachother. its why maruki said "despite being enemies, your relationship was never based on hatred or ill will".

their relationship was never a one-sided thing. akechi helps joker as much as joker helps him... arguably more. he eggs joker on, shows him that he can do better. otherwise, the leader would remain stagnant and unchallenged. there is no progress where there is no thesis and-- you can finish the rest.

Let's talk about Aqua "using" Akane

So Aqua makes a very big deal about "using" Akane, but... did he actually use her at all?

I mean, he makes it quite clear that he is only keeping her close because she's useful, right?

So, what is Akane useful for, exactly?

Aqua's entire premise is that Akane understands Ai better than he does. He can't lose Akane because she may help him figure out Ai and find out who his dad is.

But we never, ever see Aqua asking Akane questions about Ai. At the contrary, most of his time with Akane is spent either on Aqua and Akane helping each other, or on Aqua talking to Akane about himself rather than about Ai.

(Spoilers for the entire manga below the cut!)

Let's take the TB arc for example, since this is the arc where Aqua and Akane interact again. What do we see?

First, Aqua helps Akane voice her concerns about the script:

Then he helps solve the disconnect between the ones in charge of the script and the original author, thus doing Akane and everyone involved a big service:

Then he helps Akane win against Kana, going as far as to agree to do emotional acting in order to accomplish it:

And then he helps Akane draw Kana out into the spotlight:

In other words: Aqua spends the entire arc working as a team with Akane. He makes no effort to use her at all.

What's more, all the occasions he had to get Akane's insight about Ai? He uses them to give Akane insight about himself instead.

Which is ironic, because we eventually find out that he even went as far as planting a GPS on her sometime after Love Now, in the off-chance Akane came in contact with the culprit. He obviously was pretty serious about making the most of Akane's deduction skills...

... but how was Akane supposed to deduce anything when Aqua never gave her any info? After all, Aqua only shares that information with Akane after he thinks his revenge is over and he has no use for her anymore.

Which means that, up to the point where Aqua temporarily drops his revenge plans, we don't actually see him using Akane at all.

Despite this, we still see Aqua going on and on about how he has "used" Akane.

So, let's take a closer look at all the ways he has "used" Akane, shall we?

• "About my father" is the simplest one, since that's what Aqua wanted to use Akane for in the first place. Except that, as we saw, things don't go quite as planned and he literally doesn't do anything to have Akane find his dad.

So yes, Aqua did intend to use Akane to find his dad, but he doesn't actually put her to use. In fact, Akane finds him all on her own by pure chance much, much later.

• "The corpse" is a very interesting one, because by Aqua's own admission, he trusted Akane's capabilities enough to think she may be able to find his corpse, and fed her information to help her achieve this.

This is indeed true, except for two things. One, when Aqua starts looking for the corpse, he actually tells Akane to stay behind. She's the one that chooses to follow after him. Aqua makes it sound like Akane finding his corpse was his goal from the get-go, but his actions are at odd with his words.

Secondly, Aqua stops looking for the corpse the moment Akane suggests it may be buried, but he still takes her to Goro's house either way.

Nothing he tells her about Goro is relevant to the search of his corpse. It's completely irrelevant, in fact. But Aqua still opens up to her, sharing everything about Goro, from his upbringing to his goals to his feelings.

Once again, his words say one thing, but his actions tell a different story. Akane is the first person Aqua has opened up to about Goro, and he does so without any ulterior motive.

Which leads me to the way Aqua has "used" Akane:

• "And many other things."

This is what Aqua means by "many other things". Ever since that day, Akane has been giving Aqua emotional support and he has come to treasure it, so much so that it "saves him little by little".

I'd even say he has come to rely on it, as his monologue later shows.

Now, you may say, but isn't receiving and giving emotional support a normal part of every relationship?

And you'd be completely right! But Aqua isn't a normal guy.

Aqua is guilt-ridden to the point he is in pain whenever he enjoys anything. Since the guilt he feels colors basically everything he sees, it permeates his relationship with Akane as well.

Instead of seeing all the good he has done for her, he just sees all the ways he ties her down.

Instead of seeing how much of himself he has shared with her, he focuses on what he has kept from her.

He is such a guilt-ridden, self-deprecating person that he even apologizes when Akane finds his corpse. As if getting murdered and not being found for 20+ years was his fault!

Akane puts it best: Aqua is always trying to carry the burden on his own, always acting like every wrong is his fault.

It's no surprise then that Aqua feels guilty over allowing himself to cherish Akane's support. It's also no surprise that he tries to paint it negatively as him "using" her, because Aqua has been trying to convince himself that his relationship with Akane is a lie.

If he repeats it enough, if he makes his every action about using Akane, then it will be easier for him to let go of her — even when that becomes the last thing he wants to do.

This all comes to a head in Chapter 98, where we see Aqua cutting ties with Akane to keep her safe. This was the perfect time to use Akane, for real this time — but "using" Akane has become a lie that he can't keep up any longer.

Akane has become too important to him. So important in fact, that leaving her side marks the moment he makes a wrong turn and gives himself into the darkness of his revenge.

TL;DR Aqua did want to use Akane, but he never gets around to it. He comes to rely on her emotional support and feels so guilty for it that he sees that as "using" her. Ironically, by the time Akane becomes the perfect "tool" for him to use in his quest for revenge, she matters too much to him and he lets her go to keep her safe. In fact, Akane only makes herself "useful" to him by pure chance! lol

he's trying his very best to stay calm.

He can see that your uncomfortable so he tries to get to you as fast as possible

Honestly his reaction depends on his mood

if he's in a bad mood, or is maybe a little less confident with himself, he is quick to take his place beside you, his arm wrapping around your waist.

he chats with you, completely ignoring the person who was trying to flirt with you

if the person finds the courage to speak up, he sends them a death glare. seriously, if looks could kill this person would be 6 feet under

showers you in affection afterwards, and pouts if you don't return his affection :(

if he's in a good mood, and confident (most of the time), then he strides over to you, pressing a kiss to your cheek before politely telling the person bothering you that the two of you are together and you are NOT looking for a partner

Even with that silver mask adoring your face, Akira could still tell that it was you. You stood out to him, even in a room full of masked faces.

The two of you had been invited to a masquerade ball, and you were both incredibly excited to go, to the point that the two of you decided to match outfits.

you looked so gorgeous, that even the person beside you seemed in awe.

the person beside you....

at first, he continues on with what he was doing, gathering drinks for the two of you. He trusts you...its not like you would prefer this girl over him, right?

the slight moment of hesitance has him glancing back over to you, only to see your awkward smile, and the women pressed up against you, with her arms wrapped around your arm.

that's all it takes for Akira swiftly walk over to your side, eyeing the girl who was chatting up a storm with you, before gently yanking the arms of the women off you. he turns to you, pressing a kiss to your cheek. You giggle, pressing one to his cheek in return.

the women beside you cleared her throat, obviously embarrassed. Akira raised an eyebrow, daring them to say anything. The women gulped, before turning away, face burning.

Akira turned back to you, flashing you his charming smile and enjoying your attention that was now only on him.

Goro Akechi~

his response also depends on his mood, and also which version of him your dealing with (before or after 3rd semester)

if your with Akechi before 3rd Semester, then he puts up his princely facade and deals with it in a responsible manner, cheerfully letting the person know that you have a partner.

appears seemingly out of no where

does tell them off in a condescending way about touching things that don't belong to them

not a big fan of PDA, but he will rest one of his hands on your lower back, and occasionally he will lean down to press a kiss to your cheek or whisper something in your ear

he makes them feel TERRIBLE, and then smiles about it

acts the same way PDA wise, but allows a smirk to rest on his face, and is kind of a tease, whispering about how adorable you are

either way, he stops this person before they can get close enough to touch you

Akechi finally had a break from work.

it had been weeks since the two of you were able to truly spend time together, so he figured a date between the two of you would be perfect. he let you choose.

thats how the two of you ended up at an outdoor ice rink, his brown jacket wrapped tightly around him as the cold nipped at him.

His scarf was wrapped around your neck, and he couldn't help but think how cute you looked, the scarf nestled up against your soft pink cheeks.

he looked away for a second, going over to put on his own skates, before standing back up and searching around to find you. it didn't take long.

You were skating slowly beside another girl, and Akechi tried to think nothing of it, until he saw a flirty smirk cross the girls face, and saw them slowly moving closer to you.

he got over as fast as he could without looking weird, coming up between you and the other girl just before she could come to close to you. he turned to the girl, asking if the two of you new each other. when you said no, he introduced himself, stating quite clearly that the two of you were together. she got the hint, and made up a quick excuse before leaving the two of you alone.

he reached for your hand, and the smiled. Finally the two of you could have some alone time.

◟a/n◝ whenever it comes to him my brain starts running at 30 mph and types up a storm

• jealously is a very common emotion for akechi. obviously he doesn't always let it get to his head but it's a emotion that's almost always hovering over his head.

• honestly it's not even jealously, it's more a protective urge and his own insecurities. pretty much everyone he's loved slipped through his hands and he sure as hell isn't losing you.

• when he is jealous he gets quiet and gets slightly visibly annoyed at whoever is taking up your attention. most of the time he'll have enough after a few minutes and politely excuse you both before walking off and leading you somewhere else, squeezing your hand ever so slightly.

• that's however before everything happened? afterwards it's all hell. in public he's still polite, it's the right thing to do, however God forbid a phantom thief is taking up your time? he drops all nice fronts and pretty much drags you away from them with no more then an annoyed "something came up" or "I need to borrow them". unless it's akira then he might just tell him to fuck off

• calming him down from his initial jealously is easy. you can giggling at the fact that he's jealous and his previously tense shoulders will drop, after all he finds your presence calming. however he will need reassurance that you're not leaving him or going anywhere or else his emotions will spiral fast.

• he trusts you wholeheartedly that you won't leave him for another it's just his mind tricks him and shows him images of you just leaving his life and it breaks his heart. you're so dear too him to the point that his mask will break in front of others just for your sake. You love him just as equally so even though he needs to heal and it might take sometime, be patient with him and he'll be forever grateful.

When Shiro told his father that his friend borrowed the character from his name and so the child is named Goro like him. He went on to say that he always regretted that he couldn't give them grandkids, but feels like he's done right by them by passing on what he learned from them, you could see something finally click between all of them and give them peace. Shiro's parents have not handled his queerness gracefully, and I've loved the slow work between all of them to do better by each other. Coming out of the painful barrier they put between them and Kenji in the movie, I like how much of this season was Shiro's parents undoing that.

Ueda Koji in Our Dining Table

This man lost his wife and now caring for a very young son with the help of his depressed adult son. No matter the grief he's carrying, he's continued to maintain his profession and provide for his sons. When he sees a kind stranger reignite his own son, he does everything he can to support that relationship, including physically throwing his own son out of the house to go reconcile. He gave Yutaka the kindest advice I've ever seen about going into love with your heart open and your mind clear, knowing that you will probably lose that love at some point. Incredible father figure of the year.

Happy Birthday, V!

Was staying up way too late and getting way too emotional over these fictional gonks last night, but yes... I've wanted to do a bigger scene like this for so long, and what better occasion than male V's canon birthday today!

These aren't all my favourites from the game (the sofa wouldn't be big enough for it xD), but the people Vince would like to invite over for the occasion for sure, let it be a year or two down the line when they all actually are in the same area at the right time and come together like this (and uuuhhh... obvious problems with one certain ex-bodyguard set aside and solved because I said so!). It would really be a special thing to have everyone there that's been with him during one of the worst times of his life. Thanks to them (amongst many others) he even gets the chance to celebrate another birthday.

Some more ramblings about some of the interactions I'm picturing here and why I placed everyone the way I did under the cut xD And some more pics to come in a separate post later :3

Front and center obviously Vince and Kerry and Judy, my faves, my loves <3 I think this would probably be one of only a handful of times Kerry ever meets Judy in person. He only ever hears her over the holo and knows her from what V told him, because she left Night City before they got a chance to meet prior to the game's endings. I think they would go along so well though, and besides Kerry, Judy is the person Vince feels closest to out of the group pictured here, and he'd be so excited to know Kerry and her get along as well.

Then Judy and Panam... I lowkey ship it so hard, and I mean, they would make one power couple, but at the very least I think they'd become good friends, maybe Judy even travels with the Aldecaldos for a while or joins them, like in the Star ending when she's romanced.

I put River in the back and center cause he's the biggest of the bunch and I think he'd love being there, watching over everyone in a way (and keeping an eye on Takemura, cause he doesn't trust him xD). I'd like to think him and Viktor get talking about boxing, workouts, maybe make plans for a friendly sparring match. Maybe they've even met before on some occasion, only just realizing it now. Viktor is btw out of the whole bunch the person Vince has know the longest, almost as long as he knew Jackie in my background story for him.

Goro keeps himself in the back because he definitely is the odd one out of the bunch (probably didn't wanna come in the first place), but maybe he's starting to realize this moment that a life without Arasaka is not the end of the world after all. That there's always room for new beginnings, no matter how unlikely it seems (but he's still gonna give V shit, and V is gonna give him shit, obviously XD they're bickering like an old couple probably, much to Judy's and Panam's amusement who previously were rather wary of Goro).

Then a pair I only really got thinking about when I set this up were Misty and Kerry because... It does kinda make sense, and I think they'd get along really well? Like, Vince and Misty have known each other for a few years, and he likes her a lot, but he's not as close to her as he was to Jackie for example. She was definitely a positive guidance throughout the whole mess in 2077, and he really appreciates her for always seeing the good in everything. And I think Kerry would be a bit confused about her in the beginning, but since he also has spiritual leanings I think they'd find a lot of common ground. I also think Misty would just treat him as Vince's partner, some guy, not be all in awe about him being famous - aware of it, but ignoring it, because it does not matter in the grand scheme of things how rich and famous you are but whether or not you're a decent human being.

And Nibbles is there because she lives there, obviously, this is her penthouse, her sofa xD Needs to make sure everyone behaves!

I had been thinking about including Rogue in the scene, but then I also thought... she probably wouldn't come xD Be like "nah kid, thanks, but you do you", and she's not that close with Vince on a personal level. Same goes for Claire, I love her so much, and while I think she and Vince get along very well, they're not as close (or maybe she just didn't have time).

I was pondering also if I wanted to include Jackie and Johnny in some way, because they can't be there physically for known reasons (and even though Vince wouldn't have invited Johnny just to annoy him, Johny would have come anyway to annoy him back, so there's that XD). Decided against it in the end because the ideas I had would have meant more editing than what I was ready to do just now, but I have some more ideas with Vince and Jackie and Johnny that work better in a different setting anyway.

He'd just hazily wrap his arm around you and fall back asleep. He's pretty easy to fall asleep on, but it mostly only works if he's also already asleep or trying to sleep. Otherwise, he'd just pick you up and tuck you into bed.

Majima Goro

Don't fall asleep on him if he's also asleep, at some point he's going to flail around and you'll get kicked or something. If you fall asleep on him while he's awake, he'll just sit patiently. It's literally like a cat fell asleep on his lap. He cannot move now. It's illegal.

Akiyama Shun

Nap on him anytime. If he's asleep, if he's awake, if he's laying down or sitting up or at home or at work. Free cuddles. Do it. He wants it. Please?? He'll be so nice and stroke your hair and everything.

Saejima Taiga

A human pillow. A living breathing heated blanket. If you get cold easily, I would recommend falling asleep on Saejima. He's also one of the bigger guys so you can like full body lay on top of him.

Tanimura Masayoshi

Very gentle little baby and might even fall asleep while you're sleeping with your head in his lap or leaning on his shoulder. The two of you tend to just fall asleep wherever the other one does, it's almost comedic how much that happens.

Ryuji Goda

Also a human pillow, although he's kind of goofily prideful about it. If you fall asleep on him, he's internally like "Alright, I'll be the best pillow ya ever had then!".

Nishikiyama Akira

It kind of melts his heart. It makes him feel like you trust him and can depend on him and that means a lot to him. He can be a little protective or jealous sometimes, so moments like this make him feel genuinely close to you.

Daigo Dojima

On the rare occassion you're sleepier than he is, he'll just kind of engulf you in his arms and hold onto you until you either wake up or until he also falls asleep. Out of all the boys, it's most common for Daigo to either fall asleep on you or for you to fall asleep on him.

Mine Yoshitaka

Kind of feeds into his top/dom energy, I won't lie. He's secretly like "Oh HELL yea, fall asleep on me. Love that." even though he's not the most cuddly of the boys. He thinks it's cute that you just nodded off like that.

Tatsuo Shinada

Constantly torn between letting you just sleep that way or tucking you in more properly, especially if he's still wide awake. At the same time, he doesn't want to move you because you're basically cuddling now, right?

Ichiban Kasuga

First time it happens, he turns beet red and sits so still that you might mistake him for a statue. Over time, he just gets used to it and kind of pats your head. Would let you sleep it off but might tease you when you wake up by saying something like "Ah, look who's awake!" or "Someone was a sleepyhead, eh?". If he's also sleepy, he'll kind of drape one arm over you and pass out.

Joon-Gi Han

Also operates off of cat logic. You are laying there and you will remain there for as long as you are comfortable. Would probably actually tell the others at HQ that he cannot come in because you're still asleep on his chest and therefore he cannot move. Honestly, this is one of his preferred forms of intimacy as he enjoys the quietness. He's a little bit of an awkward conversationalist so this is relaxing for him.

So I was perusing Reddit and came across this older post about the supposed leaked DLC endgame content from 2022. I had seen some of said leaked content at the time, and I knew there were mentions of Goro and Tokyo and potentially having to sell out Vik, but I took all of it with a grain of salt because these things are often unreliable. (And a good thing I did seeing as how the Phantom Liberty ending is completely different, and this would have been a huge disappointment if my heart had been set on it.)

But y'all, if this was actually on the table for a potential ending for the DLC, I feel SO ROBBED.

Quoted from the Reddit post:

So it turns out that this new ending isn't an actual new ending, but instead just a new path for The Devil ending. Basically, what happens is that if you complete Songbird's questline and gain her trust, she will give you a cure for the relic. After you agree to help Hanako, confront Yorinobu, head up to Arasaka's orbital facility, and remove the biochip from your head, Songbird's cure will begin to activate, and it will begin healing V's brain and nervous system. What happens next is determined by whether or not you saved Takemura's life during the Search and Destroy quest. You will secretly be given a test by Hanako to prove your loyalty and professionalism. What that test is is determined by what happened in the aforementioned quest. If you do save Takemura's life, Takemura will come to tell you about the surgery's success. He will then ask you to do one more job for Araska. This test is to find where Vik is and mark his location for Arasaka, as Vik is a loose end because of his knowledge of the biochip. If you complete this mission, Hanako will then appear and try to reassure that nothing bad will happen to Vik as long as he doesn't cause problems for Arasaka. If you did everything correctly, she will then offer you a job as the head of her security detail. If you accept this offer, you will move with her to Tokyo and once again become an Arasaka employee. If you don't, then you'll just stay in Night City and Takemura will be disappointed in you. You can also say some very mean things to Takemura during this exchange. No matter which of these options you choose, all of V's friends will end up hating her for working with Arasaka. There's also some interesting dialogue if V decides to work with Hanako. V will mention how she doesn't want to return to her old life and how, for the first time in her entire life, V feels like she knows where she's going and what she wants. Hanako will reply to V by stating that a luxurious lifestyle that V could never have previously imagined awaits her in Tokyo. If you did not save Takemura's life, Hellman will come to tell you that the surgery was a success, but will then try to convince you that Hanako is actually planning to kill both of you as you and Hellman are now loose ends. He will tell you that his previous deal with Kang Tao is still on the table, and that he has a shuttle prepared that can take you and him to Kang Tao. He will try and urge you to join Kang Tao with him. If you refuse to go with him to Kang Tao, Hanako will appear and reveal that this entire conversation was actually a test to see if you would betray Arasaka. Hellman further explains that due to V's actions, Hellman couldn't even join Kang Tao anymore if he wanted to and that he's essentially stuck working for Arasaka. Hanako will compliment your professionalism and will then offer you a job as the head of her security, just like in the Takemura ending.

Still hard to say if this was ever actually a possibility, but either way: given that this was stuff found in spring 2022 and at one point Cyberpunk was supposed to have 2 expansions, I'm guessing this content had been long cut/reworked by the time it was leaked.

This honestly would have been the perfect canon ending for Valerie, from the angst of having to sell out a friend to finally being able to fully own her corporate shill proclivities, and as happy and content as I am to fully live in my own headcanons at this point, I would have loved to see this one in action.

To start things off, let’s talk

BACKGROUNDS

Starting with Hongo!

Comparing 71 vs the manga...

In both, he’s still a student. In 71, he’s an active member of the Tachibana racing club, with several friends who are club members! Most of them are out of town, but can be expected to return for races, especially his friend and racing rival, Goro Hayase!

In the manga, he was raised and supported by Tachibana Tobei after both his parents passed away in his youth.

Shin Kamen Rider (2023) uses NEITHER of these backstories, and in the process, it makes Hongo more alone than ever. No family, no friends, no racing club, just one former professor that didn’t stay in contact and then betrayed his trust and violated his bodily autonomy.

And I'm not just talking about turning him into an Aug either!! When they meet again, Professor Midorikawa just GRABS Hongo’s belt to demonstrate how to release the transformation. Without asking, without explaining it so Hongo can do it on his own without being touched. That belt is part of him now. Grabbing it like that… It’s just not the same as fixing someone’s tie or wiping food off their face—though you’d ASK before you did those things too.

I wanted to punch this man for real for real. Don't think that just because you designed him you have the right to put your damn hands on him!! BACK THE FUCK UP

...I personally enjoyed how they took some time to recognize Professor Midorikawa’s culpability for Hongo’s abduction.

In the manga he says he meant for them to escape together before Hongo was modified, but in the ’71 show he says no such thing. He asks for Hongo’s forgiveness, but doesn’t deny that he recommended Hongo to Shocker.

In Shin… he doesn’t even seem sorry. AT ALL.

He justifies everything to Hongo by poking at sensitive subjects that were likely discussed in confidence, if at all. And all this is in front of Ruriko, this girl Hongo’s never met, who proceeds to tell him to his face that the reason he’s alone is because he’s unlikeable. And Professor Midorikawa doesn’t say a word in Hongo’s defense! He silently agrees with her! He’s probably even the person that told her that about Hongo in the first place!

Even when Hongo looks at him for help and support, the professor just ignores him. And Hongo just… silently accepts that. Like he didn’t expect anything else.

Like he expects to be ignored, or betrayed, or hurt by others. Like that’s what “normal” is for him.

AND THAT AIN’T EVEN GETTING INTO THE SHIT WITH HIS DAD DING-DONG DITCH DYING ON HIM HOOO BOY

And then there’s Hayato!

Hey what the fuck does that mean?

Comparing Hayato's original appearances...

In 71 he appears from nowhere like he was born on that table.

There’s One Guy (Mr. Yamazaki) that he studied photography with, and he doesn’t even know Hayato that well!! They were acquaintances, from Yamazaki’s point of view. And even after Hayato saves his life, he’s just like “well, time to go back to not ever contacting him” like what

In the manga, he has a family in a fishing village. He left and published a series of photographs called “Chasing the Black Rain”, discussing the long-term effects of nuclear fallout from the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. During the project, he made friends with two survivors, a kid with leukemia and his older sister. They’ve known each other for months, and he visits them regularly.

So it seems like Shin Kamen Rider leans more into the ’71 series for Hayato’s backstory.

He’s alone too. If he has any connections with other people, they’re superficial. Colleagues, former classmates… none of whom bothered to stay in touch. No one who Hayato would want to get in touch with when he was freed. No one who’d care when he went missing. No one who’d care if he stayed gone.

With background established, there’s two questions left.

How’d he end up in Shocker’s hands?

And how he’d end up an Aug? THESE ARE DIFFERENT QUESTIONS.

Presumably, they picked him up when he was getting a little too close to getting a scoop on Shocker. There’s plenty of missing-persons cases he could have gotten caught up in, especially given all the incident reports on Shocker operations that Taki has.

Ending up an Aug though… that’s more complex.

The average Shocker abduction victim or volunteer just becomes a mindless drone—one of the goons. NOT a full Aug.

The Augs seem to be exclusively those people that the AI “I” decides are truly miserable, moreso than anyone else.

SO HEY WHAT DOES THAT MEAN ABOUT HAYATO. HMM.

SADNESS

            They’re both really sad (in different ways)! And the fact that they’re both Augs and not regular goons is canon confirmation of that!

 Ichiro/Butterfly Guy says that he ‘tweaked’ Hayato. So he didn’t make him from scratch, like Professor Midorikawa did for Hongo. Which MEANS that whatever sorting process the AI “I” goes through to pick Augs, Hayato qualified, without anyone else’s thumbs on the scales.

            On Hongo’s side of things, I’d argue that if Professor Midorikawa was able to get permission to make Hongo into an Aug, that also means he was able to convince K that Hongo would fulfill I’s Miserable Requirements, whatever those are. There aren’t very many Augs to start with, and Ruriko’s shock at there being an Aug she didn’t know about suggests that they take time, skilled labor, and resources to make—which Shocker might not have in large supply, since they still seem to be getting their footing as a cult. So I think they would be pretttty picky about who exactly get the “privilege” of being augmented. This would also make the “glum-chum” comment from Ruriko make even more sense. If she’s saying that, she must have heard it or read it from somewhere, likely from Professor Midorikawa. He’d probably mention it or put it in his notes on Hongo IF it was important for his plans—and if “I” only accepts Aug candidates that are depressed, and Midorikawa needs an Aug candidate he KNOWS will qualify… that could be a large part of why Hongo was picked in the first place. The Professor even seems to indirectly confirm this when he justifies his decision to Hongo. He says “I know your despair” and says that “it had to be you”. If Hongo’s the most miserable guy he knows, and he needed someone sad in order to ‘pass inspection’… then yeah, it had to be Hongo.

In the same speech he claims that Hongo “wanted it”. What he DOESN’T say is anything like “I wanted to help you”. He damn well knows what he did was selfish, and that he’s exploiting Hongo’s suffering for power, even IF he’s trying to use that power to destroy Shocker’s evil.

"You wanted it". Disgusting. That's a pretty excuse, if by pretty you mean "pretty damn bullshit".

Anyway back to Hongo and Hayato.

APPROACHES TO PEOPLE

The way these two think about other people drives me insane. It’s so different from their previous portrayals in a way that’s so fascinating to me.

In Shin Kamen Rider, Hongo really does think that he’s loved and cared about.

But everyone he thinks that about, hurts him relentlessly, and/or just leaves. They’re not reliable.

His dad! Doesn’t even look at Hongo. Even when they're face-to-face he doesn't focus on what's right in front of him. He gets himself killed without any sort of safety net for his kid when he Damn Well Knows he’s a cop and that’s a dangerous job. (For every other version of Hongo, he at least has Tachibana!) And I hear you saying, he didn’t mean to leave Hongo behind… which is true! But I’m not talking about what any of these characters meant to have happen, I'm talking about the impact they had on Hongo, and the way they made him feel emotionally.

Professor Midorikawa! Solely responsible for getting him Borged and then doesn’t even have the decency to treat him with respect afterwards! Heavily implied he was saying shit about Hongo behind his back! And then he dies!

Ruriko (when they first meet)! Eventually, the care he shows her is reciprocated when she recognizes that what he fears more than almost anything else is being abandoned, AGAIN. So she figures out how to stay even IF she dies. But before that she is… really quite mean.

But even though these people caused him pain, Hongo doesn’t care, because being hurt is just normal, for him.

People he cares about hurt him so much, too much, and he thinks that's normal. That’s just how it is. That’s how love works, the people who love you hurt you, and then you’re not good enough somehow, and then they leave you behind.

Hayato… he thinks nobody SHOULD love him. Because why would they?

Because that's just normal. Nobody has before so nobody should.

For him seeing anyone express any sort of care towards him is just… alien. He hasn’t a clue what to do.

It’s like, “If you care about me that's weird why are you doing that? Let me help I'll just go away. That will make things better (normal) again”

He tries to get away from Hongo as fast as he can, but why? He LIKES Hongo. He takes his photo. He wants to remember him. He wants to help him. So if he’s leaving, he must think that that’s how he can help. That’s what ‘helping’ is—staying away.

He goes out of his way to tell Hongo that hey, you don’t need to worry about me! I’ll be fine! I’m okay with being alone, so you don’t have to be guilty! You can be relieved that I’m gone! (Everyone else is relieved when I leave. That’s just normal)

OOHG but their ideas of "normal" just HURT them SO SO SO BAD

NEED EACH OTHER

So what really REALLY kicks my ass is how the fucked up way they both view relationships is mended by their partnership with each other. They finally get to interact with someone who breaks their expectation of how things are “supposed” to work, and in doing so, they form an equal relationship of mutual care.

This really came together for me in the dark of the tunnel.

They both have a moment where they just. PAUSE. And don't say anything. And just, process. In silence.

AND IT'S A DIFFERENT MOMENT FOR BOTH OF THEMM

Hayato's Big Pause is when Hongo calls them the Double Riders for the first time (this is also the first time in the film where anyone claims Hayato as "theirs" or "belonging" in any way that's RECIPROCATING Hayato's feelings instead of commanding him)

And he just. He Doesn't Say Anything for a LONG moment. He has to PROCESS THAT.

BELONGING to someone, BELONGING WITH someone.

As a PERSON, not a tool.

FOR THE FIRST TIME.

For HONGO, it's here

Someone asking him if he's okay, offering to help, not leaving even when he's struggling to keep up, coming BACK for him. It’s the first time someone comes BACK.

He takes SO LONG to take Hayato's hand... it's like he's scared it'll be pulled away again....

AND THEN HE APOLOGIZES FOR BEING HESITANT.

They both provide what the other thinks is impossible.

For Hayato, it's the living-in-the-moment EXPERIENCE of Having Someone There who Wants Him To Stay.

And for Hongo, it's the PROMISE of being there to help not hurt, the reliability, the not-going-to-abandon-you,,,, and the only thing he can do in response to that impossible premise, of “someone who won’t abandon you, someone who will come back”, is promise to right back, to never leave Hayato alone, even if he dies. He also finds a way to stay, because he knows how being left behind feels.

It seems like despite Hongo saying he doesn't want to be like his father, he ended up dying like him anyway, but!! I don't see it that way.

He made sure that no matter what, he wouldn't be leaving his loved ones all alone. Even though he didn't think he'd survive, he wanted to at least make sure his helmet was recovered, so that Hayato and Ruriko would both have each other to lean on.

So there’s this repeated line about “pain” being one stroke away from “happiness”, when you write it out—

Akiren

He honestly thinks you are very hot. Which sounds a little juvenile, but trust that it comes from a good place. He is the last person to care about the looks of other people. All he cares about is that you are healthy and happy, and if you are, then he is happy! He loves you dearly, no ifs or buts.

However, if you have a health condition and need to watch your diet, he will help you. He will research thoroughly, and maybe ask some things to Takemi. When he makes food, he is mindful of what you can or cannot eat. He makes it fun though, like if it's allowed, he would give you a cheat day! He is not that strict, and he acknowledges that it's hard. As long as it will not worsen your state, he can be a little lenient.

He is smitten with you. He is very affectionate, and that translates into his actions. Even if you guys are just sitting beside eachother, having a study date in Leblanc, if you mindlessly put your hand beside his he would grab it and give a kiss to it. He is also no longer letting it go, by the way. Like if you were holding his right hand, he is suddenly writing with his left. Or if he needs to drink, he would grab on to the mug and if you even try to let go, he will tighten his grip.

"You need to drink?"

"Yes, but I can drink while holding your hand," he says as he grabs the mug with your hand still on his palm, and he struggles to bring the mug closer to his lips.

If you let him, he would love to lie down on your thighs. It's very comfortable, and he would love to spend eternity on them. He also loves chomping on your cheeks. It's playful in nature though, and he uses no teeth. His laugh is lively when he sees the incredulous look on your face.

If someone dares to make an off-putting comment about you, he will not be happy. He won't do anything rash, and unless that guy has a place in the MetaNav, he will not do anything to them. He will focus on you instead, choosing to shower you with love and attention hoping that you forget whatever happened.

If you are feeling insecure about your weight, he would gladly listen to your worries. Afterwards, he will ask if you need a hug, encouragements, or a different option that is not mentioned. If you choose a hug, he will open his arms wide and encase you in them. He will give you soft, lingering kisses on your temple to your cheeks. If you choose encouragements, he will list down every thing he loves about you (which is everything actually). He loves you wholeheartedly, and he wants you to love yourself just as much. Because life has been so much brighter and better with you in his life, you deserve only good things.

Goro

Goro does not care. Which sounds mean, but it's in a "So what? I love you" kind of way. Goro chose you, and it does not matter what you look like. When Goro loves, he loves with his whole being. His attention, affection, loyalty, his everything, it's yours.

But, if you have a health condition, he is very strict. Will read the label in every food he buys, and watches you like a hawk. He will try to find an alternative for something you cannot eat, and unless a doctor gave his explicit permission, you cannot have it. But do not worry, he will also not eat it. He will do it with you, so you are not alone. If you are doing a diet, he will also do that with you so you have encouragement and extra support!

He worships you. He likes lavishing you with the finer things in life. He could be walking around and then see an outfit that would look good on you and boom! New outfit for you. He makes sure he gets the measurements correctly, he has done this so many times before that he has memorized it. He also loves kissing every part of you he could get his lips on. He also loves, loves, LOVES call you affectionate nicknames that encapsulate how he feels about you. You have a whole collection of nicknames at this point.

He also likes touching you. An arm around your hips, or his hand over yours. He likes cuddles too, but he is kind of shy asking for it at first. After a while, it's like second nature to the both of you. He lies down on the couch and spreads his arms, then the next moment you are sprinting across the room to lie down on him. In your cuddle sessions, sometimes his hand strays to whatever it is he can reach.

"What are you doing, Mr. Akechi?"

"Loving you," he mindlessly rubs your back, with one hand landing on your thigh and squeezing. He gives you a kiss on your forehead.

If someone insults you, well! That person must have no sense of self-preservation. He will try to keep up appearances, but Goro will not let it go. Usually his reaction is based on yours, if you do not seem to mind he will just do something small. Like maybe trip up the guy. Let us hope that for the sake of this person that he does not say anything more than that . .

If you are feeling insecure about your weight, he will not be able to understand it at first. Because in his eyes, you are perfect. But he will still listen, and when you are finished he will take your hand in his. He will start kissing each individual finger, and the kisses will start trailing up to your arm, until finally, landing on your face. For a brief moment he will just look into your eyes, and then nuzzle your noses together. He's not that good with words, so he will show you instead. He will make you feel it instead. It's okay if right now you do not feel like you love yourself, he will gladly fill in the blanks until you see yourself in his eyes.
