There were few sounds in the world that your sleep-addled mind could register that were better than those that announced Bucky’s return to your apartment after a mission had dragged him away. The quiet click of the front door closing, the muffled thuds of his boots being toed off and kicked aside. The sound of your bedroom door opening, and his quiet groan as he pulled off his jacket and tossed it over the chair in the corner. You answered it with a groan of your own to let him know you were awake despite the alarm clock beside you reading four sixteen a.m., your face still buried in the pillow, your arms tucked beneath it.

You could sit up and ask him how he was, ask him what he and Sam had done on this latest mission somewhere undoubtedly far away. But that was what the morning was for, when a mug of coffee was warming his hand and the apartment was warm and open with light. Now, you knew what he wanted; to climb into bed and forget, just for a little while, everything he’d just done that might have triggered a memory from the years before you’d met.

You listened to the rustle of clothing as he stripped down and pulled on a pair of sweats, smiling softly as you felt him climb onto the bed. He lay down on top of you, his right arm wrapping around your waist as his chest pressed against your back. You felt his breath tickle the back of your neck as he buried his face in the crook of it, his lips brushing against your shoulder blade. Even through the comforter his body heat burned wonderfully against you, and you felt yourself relax into his embrace.

“Honey,” you murmured, voice muffled by the pillow. “I missed you too, so much, but you’re crushing me right now.”

You heard him exhale a breath of a laugh, and he shifted, rolling off of you. You rolled with him, tucking yourself into his side, the comforter tangling between you as you hooked your leg over his. Bucky pressed his lips to the top of your head, his arm still wrapped around your waist.

“You’re home earlier than I thought you’d be,” you noted quietly, smiling as he took hold of your hand, trapping it against his bare chest. “Didn’t think you’d make it back ‘til some time tomorrow.”

“It is tomorrow.” he pointed out, his voice low and rough. His lips were still in your hair, and you swore you could feel his lazy, teasing smile.

“You know what I mean,” you replied, tracing a tiny heart on his sternum. His hand shifted on yours, sliding down to hold your wrist. “Sunshine hours. Daylight. A time when I’m fully awake.”

“You seem pretty awake to me.”

You looked up at him to roll your eyes, smiling as Bucky leaned down and brought his lips tot yours. The kiss was soft and almost searching, his arm tightening slightly, reflexively, around your waist. Taking it as an invitation, you rolled on top of him slowly without breaking the kiss, your knees on either side of his hips. The comforter bunched around your thighs, no longer between the two of you. You could just feel him, and the warmth of his body seeped through skin wherever you touched.

Bucky’s hand caught yours again, trapping it between your bodies, his other hand trailing fingertips down your spine and over the curve of your backside to the hem of the oversized shirt you’d worn to bed. His shirt.

His fingers curled around the edge of it, the cold metal of his hand sending goosebumps along the back of your thigh. You parted your lips with a sigh, and Bucky deepened the kiss, his tongue sliding languidly against your own. The scent of him surrounded you, notes of sage and pine and the hint of what could have been vanilla. Your lips left his to press against the pulse point on the side of his throat and you inhaled, reveling in the familiarity of it, like it was the final tell that he really was home again.

You felt Bucky’s lips brush against your temple, and you trailed your lips up along his jaw to his chin, pressing another lingering kiss to his lips before straightening long enough to pull off your shirt and toss it aside. Bucky reached up, touching two careful fingers to his dog tags, hanging between your bare breasts. A small smile touched his lips, and his hands moved to rest on your thighs, just above your knees. The contrast between the warm of one hand and the coolness of the other made you shudder as they began to glide up your thighs, and you leaned back down to meet his lips with yours, desperate for more contact.

One of Bucky’s hands skimmed up your arm to cup the side of your face, the other continuing its slow journey up your thigh to your hip. He groaned quietly into your mouth as you rolled your hips over his, your body flush against his. You could feel your nipples harden against the firm expanse of his chest, a shiver running down your spine as the grazed against him when you moved again.

His hand tightened on your hip possessively for a moment before moving around between your legs. You hadn’t worn underwear to bed, and he slid his fingers against you, the cool metal eliciting a breathy moan from you as it lingered against your clit. “Buck…”

“God, you’re gorgeous like this,” he murmured, pressing his lips to your temple, his other hand still stroking through your hair. His voice was muted, husky and catching as you felt him harden against your thigh. “I missed you, doll.”

You trailed your fingers down his chest and stomach, lifting your hips long enough to pull the waistband of his briefs down. Taking hold of the base of his cock, you stroked him a few times, your lips and teeth grazing the corner of his jaw. His breath tickled the side of your throat, and you listened to it catch and sigh as you adjusted your hips, taking him into your cunt one inch at a time.

Bucky turned his head to kiss your cheek as he took hold of your hips, head falling back against the pillow as you began to move, grinding against him, your body still curved over his. You propped yourself up on your elbows, your face hanging inches over his as you rode him, hips undulating over his.

You moaned, eyes fluttering closed and your bottom lip caught between your teeth as each move brushed your clit over his hipbone. The slide of his cock inside you was intoxicating, stretching you, making your eyes roll back.

“Hey, look at me, doll.” Bucky whispered, hands skimming over the small of your back. You had to force your eyes open, a crease between your brows, and you felt the excitement building inside you flutter as you met his gaze. The warmth of affection burned in his eyes, his lips curving into a soft smile.

“That’s my girl,” he murmured, his hands tightening on your hips as he rolled you over, your back meeting the mattress. The pace was unbroken, and he thrust into your steadily in long strokes, sliding almost completely out of you before thrusting back into the hilt.

You pushed your hips up to meet his, one hand clinging to his shoulder, the other tracing nonsensical shapes over his chest. He smoothed fingertips over the curve of your waist before finding your clit again, his lips dusting kisses over your forehead.

Your lips parted in a soundless moan, chest heaving disjointedly as you felt yourself begin to crest, to teeter along the precipice he was building you towards. When you came, it was with a tortured sigh of his name, your fingers digging into his shoulder, your other hand grasping at his side.

Bucky caught your lips with his own as you spasmed around him, thighs clamping around his hips. His fingers left your clit to instead take your hand, leading it up to your chest. He wrapped both your hand and his around the dog tags still hanging around your neck, the cold metal almost cutting into your palm as he finally came inside you with a groan, his forehead pressed against yours. “Fuck, Y/N…”

His hips shuddered against yours as he relaxed, his breath warm against your face. His hand released yours and you reached up to touch a fingertip to his lips. He pressed a kiss to it, a soft smile teasing at the edge of his lips before he slid slowly out of you, rolling onto his back beside you.

You rolled onto your side as your breath returned to you, propping yourself up onto your elbow as you leaned over him. Capturing him in another long, lingering kiss, you smiled into it as the touch smoldered with a muted, more loving passion than before. He reached up to cup the side of your neck with his hand, his thumb smoothing along your jawline.

You smiled down at him as you pulled away, pressing a light kiss to his forehead before you rolled over and sat up, swinging your legs over the side of the bed. “Where’re you going?”

“I’ll be back in a minute, love.” you whispered before heading for the bathroom, fishing the shirt you’d been wearing off the floor and pulling it on as you went.

By the time you’d returned, a light ache between your thighs and goosebumps dotted along your legs in the cool air of the apartment, Bucky was asleep, turned on his side to face you. Your expression turned soft and warm at the sight of him, his own face relaxed in a way even your rarely got to see. You climbed soundlessly into the bed beside him, making yourself comfortable in front of him, your back to his chest.

Even in his sleep he felt your presence, and your own eyes closed, a heavy sensation settling over your body as sleep welcomed you, Bucky’s arm wrapping around your waist.

A Scarred Enigma Masterlist

Bucky stares at her as he sits at the bar nursing a beer. She was talking to Natasha and Clint, head thrown back laughing. A rare sight from her usually quiet and stoic demeanor. Her hair was curled tonight, cascading down her back over the dark green dress she wore. The dress was long sleeved, as were all her clothes. Even her bathing suit had long sleeves. Bucky knew it wasn’t because she was ashamed of her body. The dress she wore now may have covered her back and arms fully, but it was fitted to her body like a glove. It ended several inches above her knees and the heels she wore made her legs look like they went on for days. Bucky was thirsty from looking at her and no amount of drink could sate it.

Unfortunately, she was an enigma. Bucky’s knowledge about her was basically what was available in her file and the few snippets he had overheard in conversations that she never had with him. Lexa Green. Everyone calls her Lex. Except Natasha who occasionally calls her Lexy. The high level SHIELD agent was skilled, smart, and deadly, making her a natural inclusion to the Avengers.

Bucky perks up when she makes her way to the bar. “Hey, Lex.” He greets.

“Hey, Barnes.” She turns to the bartender, “White Russian, please.”

“You know, you can call me Bucky.” He says, a phrase he repeated many times to no avail.

She turns back to him and squints as if trying to ascertain his motives. The bartender hands her the drink and she sips it before saying, “See ya later, Bucky.”

“Wait!” Bucky says and she turns back to him with wide eyes. Bucky can't help but wonder to himself how one of the deadliest assassins in the world looks so innocent sometimes? His heart hammers hearing his name from her lips. It was the first crack he had ever seen in the armor she surrounded herself with. “Would you like to dance?”

“Uh, no, thanks. I told Natasha I’d be right back. She wanted to introduce me to someone.” She smiles nervously, fidgeting with her drink.

“Right. Maybe later?” Bucky is trying not to push, but he rarely gets a chance to speak to her without other people around.

“I don't really dance. Sorry.” She retreats quickly.

Bucky sees Natasha wave her over. The redhead is standing next to one of the Strike team members, Mark. He doesn’t understand why Natasha would want to introduce Lex to Mark. Not when he was sure she knew how he felt.

“Mark, this is Lexa,” Natsha introduces the Strike Team member.

“Nice to see you again, Mark.” Lex nods.

“Oh, you’ve met?” Natasha asks.

“A few years ago, but I’m glad to get a chance to meet you again.” Mark smiles and holds a hand out, “Would you care to dance?”

Lexa smiles, but gives Natasha a look over the rim of her glass as she takes a sip. “I’m sorry. I actually promised Bucky I'd be right back. It was good seeing you again, Mark.” Lex answers politely and makes her way back to Bucky.

“Can we just talk for a minute?” Lex asks. She feels bad knowing that she’s using Bucky.

“Yeah,” Bucky says in surprise, "Anything in particular you want to talk about?"

“No. Look, I’m sorry.” Lex says as she wrings her hands.

“What for?” Bucky asks.

“I’m kinda using you right now. Nat introduced me to-”

“Yeah.” Bucky’s voice carries sarcasm.

Lex’s stomach tightens as she doesn’t understand his frustration, “Oh, um, I, I knew him a few years ago. Not, uh, one of my favorite people. So, when he asked me to dance I told him I needed to talk to you.” Lex looks at Bucky hoping she hadn’t hurt him.

“Why do you avoid me?” Bucky asks.

Lex is surprised at the blunt question and stares at him for a moment before answering, “Easier. Don’t want to muddy the waters.”

“What does that mean?” Bucky looks at Lex askew.

“Nothing. I should go.” Lex moves to the exit.

Bucky stares after her. An enigma, a mystery under lock and key.

Lex gets to her room, locks the door, and strips out of the dress as quickly as possible. The relief is intense. The tight dress is not her preferred clothing choice but, beyond that, she hates constantly being covered. The high necks and long sleeves get old and there are times she feels like a mummy from the coverings. However, worse would be the looks on everyone’s faces if they saw the scars that covered her back, shoulders, sides, and arms. A few were self-inflicted like the long stripes that ran up the inside of her wrists from an attempt in her teen years. The rest were from the whips her father used for his form of discipline. The discipline that Lex seemed to always require with her smart mouth and willful ways.

Her skin resembled a map full of criss-crossed paths. The scars were intersecting, dead ending, winding, some thin, some wide, and all hideous. No one in the tower had seen the scarring except her SHIELD appointed doctor. Natasha and Clint had seen some of the scarring due to an injury on a mission, but they never asked and Lex never talked about it. However, Natasha’s meddling was now warranting a conversation. She had to stop the matchmaking bullshit. It was never going to happen. Lex was content by herself and certainly didn’t need a man to make her life complete. Being an Avenger did that.

A couple of hours later, Lex answers a knock on her door after quickly slipping on a hoodie and lets Natasha into her room.

“Hey. Are you okay? You left the party pretty early.” Natasha asks.

“I’m fine, but I’m glad you came by. I wanted to talk to you.” Lex takes a deep breath. “I need you to stop with the matchmaking and introductions. Please. I’m not interested.”

“You need a life, Lex!” Natasha exclaims.

“I have one. Romance is not the be all, end all,” Lex insists.

“Your scars shouldn’t keep you from finding love,” Natasha pushes.

Lex stares Nat down, “Good night, Natasha.”

“Lex!” Natasha starts, but Lex holds her hand up to stop her.

“I appreciate your concern but, please, please stop. G’Night, Nat,” Lex watches as Nat makes her way to the door before turning back.

“I’ll stop. For now. Good night, Lex,” Nat slips out. She doesn’t notice the supersoldier listening in around the corner.

Bucky really hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but he had wanted to check on Lex after she had left so suddenly. When he’d heard her talking to Natasha he had paused and, listening in, he connected some of the dots. Mainly, why she keeps her distance. He was no stranger to scars. His left shoulder was covered in them. He debated with himself whether or not to knock on her door. After a few moments of indecision, he turns for his room. He had wanted to know if Lex was okay and he had his answer. Now, he was more determined than ever to unlock the mystery surrounding her. He just had to find a way in.

Airpods firmly in her ears, Lex is going through her weight lifting routine. She had just finished a set when she felt one of her airpods move. She turns to see Bucky put the airpod into his ear.

“What are you doing?” Lex asks.

“I was curious what you were listening to.” Bucky smiles.

“It’s Monsters by Shinedown.” Lex holds her hand out for the airpod.

“It’s interesting. Can you start it over? I've never heard it before.” Bucky ignores her outstretched hand.

“I’m sure you can pull it up on your phone.”

“You’ve already got it playing.” Bucky grins winningly.

“Fine.” Lex restarts the song and goes back to her routine. When the song ends, Lex hits pause on her phone and goes over to Bucky to reclaim the airpod.

“Concert’s over?” Bucky says as he returns the airpod to her outstretched hand. “I, uh, like the song. I was looking forward to hearing what was next.”

“I’ll send you a playlist.” Lex deadpans as she leaves.

Bucky smiles, seeing his next way in. After he finishes his workout and showers, Bucky lays on his bed with his phone. He sends a text to Lex.

Three dots pop up and then disappear as he stares at his phone. Bucky smiles. He’s a patient man, but he ends up not waiting long. A text with a link comes through a few minutes later.

Bucky: Don’t forget to send me that playlist.

Lex: Check out Lex’s Rock Out Playlist

Bucky: Thanks.

Lex: Don’t read anything into it.

Bucky: What do you mean?

Lex: The songs.

Bucky: Still don’t understand.

Lex: 🤷

Bucky settles back and begins listening.

Lex had debated with herself whether to send the playlist. In the end, she made a few strategic edits and sent it. She knew what Bucky was doing. Music is a unifier. He was trying to find some common ground they could meet on but he was in for disappointment. The only reason any guy did this kind of thing was to try to get laid. She wouldn't be much help there. Or any at all. Eventually he would figure it out and move to greener pastures.

Bucky found Lex at the weights again the next day. He smiles at her and says, “Hey. I listened to your playlist. It was really good.”

“Great.” Lex says with a tight smile and turns to leave.

“Where are you going?” Bucky asks. “I was hoping we could talk.”

“Going on a run.” Lex says.

“Would you like some company?” Bucky asks.

“No, thanks. Got my playlist for company.” Lex puts her airpods in and exits.

Bucky stares after her in consternation. He had thought he could at least get her into a conversation about the music. He had enjoyed most of the songs. Truthfully, he identified with several of them. Even more so, he had seen Lex in many of them. Putting his earbuds in, he started her playlist again on his favorite song. The one he thought of as her song...
