You should be playing #4 - Tortured Existence

Tortured Existence is the black Survival of the Fittest - but no one gives it the respect it deserves.

15 years ago, this card was bonkers. You could trade a random mana dork for a bomb late game. Or you could do the opposite and make sure you hit all you ramp by trading out late game cards for your Sakura Tiber Elders. It could easily bin your Anger and recur a Plaguecrafter. And it could super charge your Dredge engine.

It's only gotten better since then.

These days you don't just trade creatures between zones. You also get to abuse "goes to the graveyard" effects, "leaves the graveyard" effects, and "when you discard" effects. It's also a pretty amazing madness enabler.

Tortured Existence is a value engine in a can - and you should be playing more of it.

Please let me know if you run into any problems! This is the biggest cc project I've ever undertaken, and it took me so long to finish because I was working on/off it for months. I feel like I've learned so, so much in doing this set, and I am really looking forward to implementing my new skills!

*Someone on kindly informed me that my functional tea kettle in the Addons file no longer works with the new Wedding Stories GP. Until I can purchase the pack I won't be able to fix it, but I will keep you all updated!

**I wasn't sure about posting these modular shelves - They are based on the Dream Home Decorator modular system (still BGC though!), so they are made to slot to each other, but I know some people have had problems with things disappearing from the EA shelves. I wasn't able to replicate the bug myself, but I separated them from the rest of the set so you can choose not to download them.

--- Here's an overview of what's in each file ---

MadameRiaBacktoBasics GREYSCALE/COLORS:

Counter - End pieces are half-tile and 3/4-tile wide; use quarter tile placement (F5) for maximum versatility!

Island - Island counters where the drawers are on the cooking side, not the eating side!

Cabinets - End pieces are half-tile wide! Mix and match! Huge thanks to @peacemaker-ic for letting me use his Quintin Cabinets as a reference for the footprint edits!

Fridge Nook - Fits most fridges

Bar - Has empty shelves with slots for decorating

Island cart - Slotted for decorations/clutter and functions as a cooking surface if there's enough room on the top

Note: To reduce the swatch count for the COLORS version, I did not pair the red swatch with the mid-tone woods because they didn't look good together.

Apron/farmhouse sink - Basin comes in white, grey, and black, with 5 metal tones for the hardware

Bar Stool - In the same swatches as the items in the Decor folder (a combination of greyscale, colors, and browns to match the butcher block wood tones)

I realized that even though this blog is meant to focus on Nessa and Captor, I haven’t actually said all that much about our resident ghost. So, here we have her backstory, in storybook-ish form because I’m lazy! The backgrounds are in brownscale btw, in reality the town was vibrant as per usual. It’s also unclear because they all wear masks, but the Subconites and original inhabitants of Mafia Town have been swapped :)

This thing has been sitting on my computer 75% finished for like 2 months... and then a few days ago I decided to completely redo it -_- You can see the background degrade as my patience did lol, although I’m proud I managed to do one at all. A more detailed version of the story under the cut!

Meet Muriel and Lilly, the two princesses of Subcon! When their mother died, Mu, as the oldest (though still too young), was forced to take up the “crown”, and although much of the work was taken up by advisers, the stress led to more irritability and paranoia than usual.

Lilly, being the good sister she was, decided to host a surprise party to help Mu relax. A group of wandering traders gave her the perfect opportunity to gather everything she needed, all while she assumed Mu would be distracted.

Mu was instantly suspicious of the newcomers, and went out to investigate; only to find her sister seemingly making a deal with these strange men! Taking a comment about her needing to get off the throne out of context, Mu ran back to the manor, betrayed. Lilly, disappointed about the ruined surprise and not realizing the greater issue, quickly followed.

She was locked away for treason for months, never once understanding what “treason” exactly she had committed. During that time, the sisters’ emotions and Subcon’s magic gradually corrupted them.

Mu’s paranoia grew exponentially, only fueled by the corruption, and at some point she ran out of jail cells for all those bad guys. So it was announced: Lilly was to be executed first, as an example. Her hair was tied up last minute, so it wouldn’t get in the way.

But when someone is so thoroughly corrupted, they don’t just stay dead.

Anyways, I hope you liked this version of Subcon! My next post on Captor, whenever it comes out, will focus more on her role during Prince’s adventure.

(I’ve been posting surprisingly often lately... I’ll be trying to stop so I can focus on other stuff, but I have no self control so)

Pauper Deck Tech: Tortured Existence

Hello & welcome to this weekly deck tech! This week we’re looking into pauper with one of my favourite deck of the format: Tortured Existence. The deck is super grindy and focuses on graveyard interactions and the dredge mechanic. All of those things are really up my alley so I have a soft spot for this sweet deck. Keep in mind that since it’s a graveyard-oriented deck it’s fragile to graveyard hate, but that’s the risk to pay when playing one of those decks. In any case, let’s jump right into it and see what the deck is about.

Heart of the Deck

This is the central piece of the deck, the goal is to get this down as fast as possible to get your engine rolling. The whole strategy of the deck is to use this enchantment to recurse your creatures over & over again. With a mix of dredge creatures you’ll get to bring back your stuff forever. The deck has a really strong synergy between it’s cards and once it gets going it’s very hard to deal with, unless you have hard graveyard hate.

the Lock

Let’s start with the win conditions, this cute little frog can actually win you the game, or at least buy you enough turns for you to win. You can either fog indefinitely, since you can bing it back via Tortured Existence + a dredge creature; your opponent will eventually draw themselves to death. Or you can just fog each turn during your opponent’s turn and then attack them freely, whatever floats your boat. Whatever you choose to do, this card will keep you alive for a very long time.

Angry Boys

These little friends here are a very important part of the deck. Seeing as you’re able to recurse your creatures from the graveyard over & over again you can easily win the game with this card. You can deal 4 or 5 damage to everything, clean the board as well as hurt your opponent’s face, then bring the rats back the next turn and do it again. Just this card can really keep the battlefield in check, especially since creatures in pauper tend to be smaller, and you’re free to just take control of the game.

Big Beats

Since you’re playing with your graveyard there isn’t really a way around it, you need to play this card. It’s one of the biggest & most scary threat of the format; you’ll easily be able to cast this for 1cmc while exiling the few cards in your graveyard you don’t plan on bringing back like lands & such. It applies tons of pressure and is just such an efficient creature.

Value Zombie

A neat little card that I don’t think sees any play in any other decks; this friendly zombie let’s you recurse a creature from your graveyard when you madness it. So if you discard this card with your Tortured Existence you get to play it for it’s madness cost and return 2 creatures from your grave to your hand, which is a really good play in my opinion. Really solid card in this deck.

Dredgers

Here we have the cards that work so well with Tortured Existence! The dredge mechanic fits perfectly with the card and makes sure you can keep bringing your creatures back from the graveyard. Golgari Brownscale is perfect in the deck since it gains you 2 life any time you bring it back, it helps you get a bit of a cushion to make sure the game lasts long enough and also gives you an advantage when you’re activating your Crypt Rats. You should also be running some Shambling Shell as an additional dredger.

Finding Your Stuff

The deck plays some ways of finding the things your looking for, by looking at the top cards of your library, taking something and putting the rest in your graveyard, since you can bring most of it back anyways. Usually the cards to go for is Vessel of Nascency, Commune with the Gods & Satyr Wayfinder. The 2 first cards can also grab a Tortured Existence so that’s a big plus. But yeah, those cards are really good to find what you need and fill your graveyard at the same time.

Wrap-Up

The deck is super fun, has a lot of synergy between it’s cards and is really strong, as long as your opponent doesn’t have hard graveyard hate. If I missed anything let me know.
