You should be playing #9 - Author of Shadows

The biggest rule in deck building that players don't take seriously enough is this: You should always run more graveyard hate.

People run plenty(ish) of creature removal. This makes sense because creatures kill you.

People run some amount of artifact and enchantment removal. This makes sense because these are often value pieces that vault a player into the lead OR are combo pieces that end the game.

People have started running targeted land removal. This makes sense because Gaea's Cradle exists.

But in my experience, people don't run enough graveyard hate. You might see a piece or two in decks, but that's it.

And yet, the graveyard is one of the most abusable resources in Magic. It's basically an extra hand. How many games have you seen a player recast a Plaguecrafter over and over again? Or reanimate an early-game bomb? Or abuse Eternal Witness?

The graveyard is the most valuable resource in Commander, and no one seems to really care about that. It makes no sense.

Enter Author of Shadows.

This warlock shade exiles all opposing graveyards, leaving yours untouched.

He effectively draws you a card - and it should be amazing, not just a random land like you get with normal card draw spells.

And he can be abused with flickering, reanimating, bouncing, ninjitsu, etc.

Sure, a 3/3 for 5 is under curve as a body goes, but Mulldrifter is a 2/2 flier for 5. Author of Shadows is essentially a black Mulldrifter that more often than not wrecks someone at the table. You should be playing him.

I'm a big fan of hurt/comfort tropes where the hurt is ongoing and escalating. Characters trying to cope with their situation and insisting that it's fine, they're fine, even as things get worse and worse and worse - especially if no one around them knows what they're going through.

Characters hiding their illness, even as they grow sicker and sicker. Characters trying to cope as their homelife becomes increasingly abusive or neglectful. Characters ignoring their injuries, only for them to become infected. Characters being stalked/ tormented by a villain and pretending that everything is fine, even as the villain continues escalating. Characters left homeless as winter approaches and their money dwindles.

I could go on. There's something very satisfying about seeing a character frantically trying to pretend like everything is okay until eventually they can't hide it anymore and get caught (and helped) by the people around them.

#and seeing characters attempting to self-soothe and all their maladaptive ways of coping on their own #that's the good shit #tropes #whump #hurt/comfort #or even if other characters are somewhat aware- but our main character has been massively underplaying the situation #and convincing everyone it's not as bad as it seems (even though it's actually Much Much Worse) #my posts

Everyone’s really excited about season 2 because of Grover in a wedding dress and Percy as a hamster but they took out all the fun parts of season 1 like saying sorry to the pink poodle, DOA records, and drowning in a bathtub etc, I just think they might not put those in.

You should be playing #8 - Idol of Oblivion

What's the going rate to draw four cards? 4 mana? 6 mana? How about 2?

For some reason, Idol of Oblivion is shockingly undervalued. It's not bursty, but if you want steady, consistent card draw it's the best.

Let's compare to the poster child for slow, steady card advantage - Phyrexian Arena.

Mana Cost:

Area: 1BB

Idol: 2

Winner: Idol by a county mile. Not only is it a full mana cheaper - which means an entire extra card - but it is also colorless. Phyrexian Arena needs a heavy black commitment to get down on turn three. Idol is always there for you on two.

Draw Power:

Arena: You get one card every turn, at the cost of one life.

Idol: You get one card every turn you generate a token.

Winner: Arena, but only ever so slightly. You will always draw a card with Arena, but there are some occasions where you might not with Idol - but not if you build your deck right.

Incidentals:

Arena: Arena lets you do some stuff with loss of life. It's not much, but it's a thing I guess.

Idol: Artifacts have a lot more opportunity to be destroyed in commander games. You technically can make a 10/10 token with Idol, but I've never been in a position where that is a better option than drawing more cards.

Winner:

Assuming you make any number of incidental tokens a turn, Idol of Oblivion is the hands-down winner. It used to be a challenge to do this, but these days everyone is making token. So take a look at your deck, if you've got clues, food, treasures, saprolings, blood, squirrels, etc, you should really be playing Idol of Oblivion.

I have a slightly unhinged Wanderer headcanon that keeps tapping at me

Ei, still deep in her grief and not at all well, actually built Wanderer in the image of a younger Makoto. Bringing him to life and seeing 'her' immediately cry pushed her even further over the edge, and was the main reason she hid him away and couldn't bear looking at him again.

Later, at some point during his time on Tatarasuna, he realised the femme-presenting image he'd been built in didn't sit right, so he cut his hair and started referring to himself as he. We see him with short hair in those early flashbacks because that's the way he sees himself.
