speculating what the s8 islanders will look like as an excuse to draw lol idk why im not going in order here's the sports physiologist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok so obviously my art style is a bit simpler than the game's and I didn't take a ton of time to render it but I think the elements are there and here's my reasoning (warning this is long lol)
the disclaimer is I read the application once and then started drawing so I think in my head I got it confused and thought this was gonna be the Bobby/Rafael cutesy fun guy of the season and rereading it now I realize I am wrong, but I still stand by certain choices.
Sports physio/cycling thing was a big thing for this. I think he shouldn't have very defined abs but the game will draw him like that. Cyclers tend to have skinnier torsos but bigger thighs/legs and I didn't draw the legs bc I'm lazy but know that in my head, he's got thick thighs. I didn't draw him with like a huge chest or arms also because of that, but because it's still LITG, he does have some definition on his arms, just not a lot. I really think I could see this guy working in sports physio.
And because he takes care of people for a living and is the "big romantic," I think he needs to look very charming, to a point where he's almost disarming. (This is where I got it in my head that he's the Bobby/Raf of the group bc lover boy vibes. Personality wise he feels like Rohan imo who is similar). Therefore I drew a lot of his features as very soft (softer jawline, fleshier nose) but also just big round eyes to draw you in. I looked at Tyrique from love island season 10 for a bit of inspo because I think he's got such a pretty face but still is pretty masculine, and he has big round eyes so that's why I did that.
I also decided on curly hair, in part because of my confusion with Bobby/Rafael, but also I think it adds to the charm because it's clearly styled but tries to look effortless. I used a younger picture of Dev Patel for it. That's also why he has a little bit of facial hair to help age him up but also works with the aesthetic I was going for. The piercings are fully a self indulgent add-in, I just it's attractive.
Ok so this is where it gets confusing because I did intially draw some sharper features on him and had a different color palette for his skin and hair. I was imagining him as "spicy white" just because Bobby and Raf are mixed so they would change it up just slightly for this guy. I think nothing that's too contrasting to make him look brooding like Joyo. So initially this was definitively a tanned white guy with curly reddish brown hair, some facial hair, and a defined nose, and then I was like this is really close to Rocco. So I changed some features and some colors and here we are now at ethnically ambiguous? I'm not gonna think too hard about the ethnicity of this character because this is fake and it's fusebox's problem when they release the real character.
Looking back, if I redrew the character, I'd go for full or half South Asian just because I did use dev patel as a hair reference. But also maybe just hopeful because aside from Angie, the other South Asian rep in recent memory I can think of is Marshall (messy), Ozzy (messier), and Suresh (messiest), so I just think we should get a cute one. (also Priya, Rohan, and Arjun who aren't nearly as bad but only one of those is a LI and they're sort of dead right now so)
anyway overall the process of drawing him was kind of a mess because I had confused some things in my head and like I said, was accidentally drawing Rocco (underrated design btw) but this was the first one I did and I don't think I'm right, this is just a fun little activity for me and he's the first one I drew so I wasn't very sure about a lot of things.
so if you read this far congrats for getting though my ramblings. The next ones I'm doing aren't nearly as complicated 😂😂

@automaticcheesecakenacho’s Valentines + Arsenik's White Day Reply [3/3] (+ Game Preview)
@automaticcheesecakenacho sent this Valentine to Arsenik:
Tumblr media
Arsenik's White Day reply:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"...Are you showing more of him as a waiter or as a host here?"
Tumblr media
"Host, waiter - they're fairly similar, aren't they?"
Tumblr media
"They've got some differences. Never been to a host cafe, club, whatever, but from what I hear -"
Tumblr media
"WE SHOULD HAVE ENDED WITH THE TEDDY BEAR."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"See? Look at that magnificent specimen."
Tumblr media
"I hope you're referring to the teddy bear and not yourself. Can't say I would put it past you to do so.
Either way, I would rather see this as me being a waiter for my valentine. I'm not interested in being a host for just any woman. Only for the one who has my heart."
Tumblr media
"Why are you shirtless?"
Tumblr media
"All the better to hug her with.
Just kidding."
Tumblr media
"I was going to say - that's my teddy bear's line."
Tumblr media
"This is clearly from before you cut your hair?"
Tumblr media
"If anything, it's a modern AU where I didn't feel the need to cut my hair and I'm a waiter at a restaurant...where I'm hoping to see my favorite customer walk through the door and serve her."
Tumblr media
"That still doesn't explain why you're shirtless."
Happy belated Valentine's Day/White Day, everyone!
That was the last Valentine/White Day reply. If you sent a Valentine within the submission period and you didn't get a White Day reply back because I accidentally missed it, please let me know ASAP so I can make you one!
About this comic - I was playing around with a rendering program to see if I could mix 3D with the game's artwork. Since I already had it up, I thought I might as well fulfill your Valentine kabedon request with it, @automaticcheesecakenacho! Hope you like it and don't mind the fact it was more 3D instead of straight 2D anime.
I also thought it might be a nifty bonus for Beauty and the War (X Playing Pieces) fans and that it'd be a nice way to end the White Day train of replies.
In the game, Arsenik will very likely have more of an anime/semi-realistic look, so don't expect to see this more realistic/3D one there. Otherwise, it'd clash with the renovated art style, which I'll show you a preview of here:
Tumblr media
(Please note that it may be subject to further polishing in the future!) Here's (Present Day) Ambrosia! I remember showing my patreons another variation of this and asking them which style they prefer. This is the one that won!
(Speaking of which, you see that first panel of Arsenik in the comic above? My patreon family can look forward to seeing the full image of that one when I post an update for this month!)
Anyway, you can see that Arsenik's 3D model would not mesh well with this current art style. Perhaps his abs can be rendered that way, though.
Consider this your White Day treat, one that can help you visualize how Arsenik would look more realistically as well. (He has always been characterized as having a long face, slanting cheekbones, a straight nose bridge, and alluring blue eyes.) You also get a glimpse of his modern day fashion - the panels where he's wearing clothes, that is. I promise he doesn't walk shirtless in public for no reason...like a certain somebody.
Either way, this was fun. Here's hoping it'll put some spring in your step for the start of spring!
Have a Happy White Day!

Looking Respectfully
Asahi, Iwaizumi, Ushijima with a s/o with an appreciation for their arms/back. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Azumane Asahi x Reader
Iwaizumi Hajime x Reader
Ushijima Wakatoshi x Reader
For @sweet-sweet-strawberry ,, here you go!!! I will def sit here and looking at their beautiful muscles with you. I think my favorites on each of these sweethearts would be Asahi’s back, Iwaizumi’s arms, and Ushijima’s thighs, respectfully. Anyway,, sorry this took so long I was really busy today!!!
SMUT // NSFW
WC- 1,976
~~~
Azumane Asahi
I was conducting my research for this…. Asahi speech. I was looking at pics of him and rechecking his sign and now my big brain is connecting the dots,,,, he is a Capricorn.... like his personality totally makes sense now knowing that,,, right?
Anyway,,,, I am currently looking respectfully at this tall gorgeous hottie!! He 6’0? He passed the I’ll be his housewife check
He is so big like his back and shoulders are so broad like lemme take a little swing daddy,,, sorry
Asahi is so polite and bashful that he would get really blush when he catches you staring at him,,, like running your eyes all over his body
I feel like he would thank you a lot whenever you compliment him, he would say thank you like fifty times…. Why is he so cute?
His self-confidence would go through the roof when he finds out how attracted you are to his arms/back,,, he would try to tease you about it but you could always tease him back really well so his methods doesn’t work like he wants it to
Telling him how much you like his muscles will probably fuel his ego, it would make him feel so good and internally he would get so cocky,,,, he would never let the power go to his head though….
It does come in handy, your appreciation for his arms because Asahi has the opportunity to make you so weak
Literally one flex of his biceps or even a glance of his bare back would have you on your knees in front of him, pulling your hair back
Asahi is one of the softest sweetest mf and he definitely knows how to treat you,, he knows what he is doing. Also I want to add that Asahi is the blueprints for what all men should strive to be like, quiet.
“A-Asahi!” You hiccup, tears pooling in your eyes as you dig your nails into his back.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” Asahi stares down at you, his face etched with concern as he looks at your pained expression. “Are you okay?”
You can’t answer and simply nod your head, hoping he gets the hint. He feels so thick inside of you, you feel so full.
“Keep going,” You push through grit teeth and Asahi wants to slow his movements, but judging from the way your nails keep piercing his back, he knows he shouldn’t. “it feels so good.”
Asahi blinks as he connects the dots all together in his head, the way you’re mewling and the way you’re holding onto his back so tightly, it should’ve made sense earlier. Asahi spreads your legs further apart, making an obvious point as he thrusts deeper inside of you. He takes advantage of how easy it is to bottom out, letting you grind against him as he stills against that one spot along your walls.
“Yes,” You lean up to kiss his neck, running your tongue along the front of his throat, nipping at any spot you can reach. “right there.” Asahi moans softly as you suck a deep bruise in the crook of his neck, the vibrations from your muffled moan go straight down to his aching cock.
He doesn’t want to be gentle anymore.
Suddenly his hips begin to move again, snapping into yours at a pace you can barely keep up with. The motion makes you fall back against the bed, unwrapping your hands from his shoulders to drag down his front instead. You watch with needy eyes as his abs ripple under your touch and you take pride in the light red scratches going down his chest.
“Babe,” Asahi warns and you pretend not to notice, he lowers onto his forearms and brings his face real close to yours and utters a single warning. “Play nice or you’re really going to get it.”
Iwaizumi Hajime
Now… now my baby boy,,,, ugh my gorgeous Hajime~~ Arms. ARMS.
Iwaizumi Hajime has them biceps, triceps, brachialis, coracobrachialis, bicep brachii, tricep brachii, thank you. Now, I know what you’re thinking ‘bitch everyone has those muscles’ and you would be right but they aren’t Iwaizumi Hajime
You guys know that photo of him with the sash that says ‘champion’ on it? Yeah,,, that’s what I AM thinking about. Please he is so damn fine, my arm wrestling KING. Next
Iwaizumi is such a shy sweet little baby BUT at the same time he is an attention-seeking gemini, therefore…. Very early on I think he would be shy whenever you compliment his looks but then later in the relationship he’d be like ‘oh you like what you see bbyg?’
He’d get really red and flustered under your stare like if you are just looking respectfully then he will seriously get soooooooo shy,,, Hanamaki will make fun of him for ages because of it LOL
When he gets more comfortable and confident with you then Iwaizumi would most definitely do things on purpose to rile you up
He’d carry heavy boxes or just stretch in front of you so that his biceps POP and you just have to sit there like…. :) thank you for the view, Hajime
Let’s sidebar for a second and IMAGINE how amazing his hugs would be,,, even though my short kind isn’t the tallest his arms would make you feel so safe and warm
Can I also add that Iwaizumi’s resting bitch face is so hot? Like he looks so unapproachable and like such an ass but he is the sweetest person EVER,,, gawd I love himmmmm m>>>>>>
Damn I really,,, what else do I add… I am just sitting here staring at photos of Iwaizumi and I am genuinely rendered speechless… he is a very handsome person
Your pitiful whimpers slip out of your mouth one after another. You try to muffle the noises by burying your face into the crook of Iwaizumi’s neck but it doesn’t work, not when he is thrusting into you like this.
“Relax, babe.” Iwaizumi drags his lips against your ear, his voice lowering uncharacteristically deep and it makes your head spin. His strong arms are wrapped around your waist as he cradles you into his chest as you rest in his lap. Your thighs are starting to grow tired from lifting yourself up and down to meet his thrusts, but the stretch is too delicious to quit. One of Iwaizumi’s hands rubs along your back soothingly, gently caressing your skin.
“Does that feel good?” He asks and slows down his thrusts, making sure you feel everything. The teasing pace, as much as you’d rather him pound into you, feels so good. Iwaizumi always makes it a point to fuck you slow and sensual, when he isn’t fucking all his frustrations out.
You love the feeling of him against you like this, holding you so close as if you’ll slip away from him. It nearly drives you crazy, he keeps thrusting into your soaked core and his groans make it harder and harder to focus on anything.
The noises that Iwaizumi Hajime produces are not to be taken lightly, his grunts and groans are so deep. So full of need that it almost sounds animalistic, yet he also makes breathy little whines. Noises that make you wonder just how he would react if he wasn’t in control. His whimpers are your favorite, the sounds he makes when he gets close, it is almost like he is begging for more.
“Hajime,” You need to hear him, you grind down against him, successfully ripping a hiss from his teeth.
“What, baby?” He asks, his strong hands grip your backside to control the movement of your bodies. Iwaizumi always makes it so obvious who is in control. From his angle, he can see everything, the way his hard cock disappears into your warm entrance, the way your face tenses up whenever it feels too good. When he gets no response, he has to ask again. “What is it?”
“I need to hear you.”
Ushijima Wakatoshi
MOTHERFCKING USHIJIMA WAKATOSHIIIII...iiiiiiii...iiii.....i. his stupid beautiful gorgeous stoic face and his thick muscular back that would tense under your touch or his abdomen that would flex every time he breathes or his biceps that would strain every time he moves it,,,, yeah I know how muscles work I took anatomy
Let’s start off with saying that Ushijima would not notice your staring, I think it would take him a while to figure out how much you appreciate his back and arms
He’d just be like ‘why do you keep staring at me?’ And be really confused
Even if you told him that you love the way his muscles flex whenever he simply moves, Ushijima would still be like ‘. . . and?’
He probably wouldn’t get the reasoning and wouldn’t think him moving is anything special... it is special Wakatoshi, you are special,
I don’t think he would purposely do stuff to turn you on,,,, he hasn’t unleashed that power yet even if he KNOWS he has it
However that doesn’t mean he won’t hold back,, he is still going to play volleyball like he always has and exercise like Ushijima always does without a care in his mind
Let’s simply take a moment to think about how gorgeous he looks in that stupid ass shiratorizawa uniform, ugh with his large ass biceps that are literally bigger than my big ass head or how tight the uniform looks on his BACK,,, something about me thirsting over him like this doesn’t feel right. I apologize Ushijima, I am looking respectfully
Probably after the first two times you jump his bones solely because of his gorgeous arms then Ushijima will finally get it,,, the light bulb would click in his head
I think Ushijima would be a really cute tease like the way he would taunt you would be so adorable,,,, he’d subtly move his arms in front of you so you can stare happily and let your mouth water in peace and act like he doesn’t know what he is doing when he damn well knows
“(Y/N), are you even listening?” Ushijima slightly tilts his head, his olive eyes are hard as he stares at you. You don’t meet his eyes, you simply nod while continuing to stare at his forearms. They are crossed over his chest and you can’t help but follow the veins that wrap around his arms. “What did I say?” Ushijima waits silently for your answer, noticing how you barely even blink and instead run your eyes all over his body and up to his strong shoulders.
“Mmm, something about volleyball?” You hum and Ushijima continues to stare at you. He heaves a sigh and stands up from his seat, placing his palms flat on the table in front of you. You can’t help the appreciate smile that comes onto your face at the sight of his arms flexing so close to you, the stupid love-sick expression on your face doesn’t go away even as you slowly bring your eyes up to his. “Is that not what you said?"
You sound so innocent that it makes Ushijima bite back a groan, instead he wraps one of his hands around your wrist and drags you toward his bedroom. As soon as you close his door behind you, you turn back around to catch the large shirt that was once on his body now on the floor. With an excited squeal you instantly place your palms on his back, running your hands all around to feel the hardness beneath his warm skin.
“Am I getting a special treat~” You ask suggestively, knowing damn well Ushijima can never say no. He doesn’t give you an answer and instead turns around to face you. One of his hands grabs your chin while the other cups the back of your neck so he can instantly press his lips to yours.
His lips mold and fit with your own, eagerly prying them apart so he can swipe his tongue against your own. It’s always a ploy to get your tongue into his own mouth, from there Ushijima can gently suck on the muscle and hear that sweet whine escape from your lips.
When he finally pulls away, only letting a few centimeters of space rest between your lips, does he answer your question.
“Yes. Only for my good girl.”
Addicted to Love
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x reader
Word Count: 900
Summary: You’re addicted to Bucky (I AM SO ADDICTED)
Author’s Note: This is for the MCU HBC @the-mcu-horniest-book-club 80s music drabble challenge! It’s based off the song by Robert Palmer- Addicted to Love. In some places I pulled lyrics right from the song and in general it’s inspired by the fact that I’m totally and completely in love and addicted to Bucky. HA! Hope you enjoy this and thank you all for reading! Much love always ❤❤❤
Warnings: Fluffy fun! Bucky being hot and sexy and sweet and flirty :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first time it happened you were caught completely unprepared and you knew you were in trouble…Bucky saunters into the common room in search of water after his run with Steve. You’re sitting at the counter with your chin resting in your hand, looking bored. Your eyes nearly pop out of your head when you see his tight blue tee shirt clinging to his sweaty body.
“Hiya doll, what’s going on?” He grabs a bottle of water and takes a long drink, showing off the long column of his neck and his chiseled jaw. A drop of sweat trickles down the side of his face and under his shirt. “Um. Hey. Can you throw me a bottle too please?” You’re suddenly feeling hot and so thirsty.
He takes a second one out and carefully throws it your way. “You ok?” Opening it and taking a drink you simply nod, not trusting yourself to speak. “Man, it’s hot out there and of course Steve had us run like 15 miles.” You just stare at him, trying to think of what to say that isn’t just a lewd moan. Managing a smile, you take another drink, eyes glued to his body as he grabs the bottom of his shirt.
He starts to lift it off and when he tries to get it passed his shoulders, he has some trouble mostly do to the fact that he’s so sweaty. He grunts and his abs flex from the labor. You’re completely mesmerized and practically drooling so when he asks for some help you barely register his question.
“Huh? Oh yeah, sure.” You walk over to him in a dizzy haze and get his metal arm out of one sleeve then pull it over his head. “Shit. Thanks babe. Sorry if I’m gross.” Your throat is tight, and you can’t breathe but you bring your eyes up to his, “ok.” Mentally berating yourself for the ridiculous reply you try to think of what else to say.
“I’m gonna go shower. I’ll be back and I’ll smell better I promise.” He kisses your cheek and walks away, leaving you standing there with your heart beating in double time. Sam walks in and snaps his fingers in front of your face, “hey, y/n! You there?” It breaks you from your spell and you give him a wide-eyed look, backing away with a small smile. Sam knowingly chuckles, raising his eyebrows, “you’re in deep, huh?” With a scoff you brush him off and head back toward your room only to hear him shout after you, “might as well face it!”
The next time you’re no more prepared than the last… You and Bucky are sitting on the couch watching a movie, his thigh brushing yours every so often and it’s driving you nuts. You can smell him, feel the heat radiating off his body. It makes you shiver, and he turns your way, “you cold doll?” You’re not cold, you’re on fire but you say “yes,” anyway. He takes off his Henley and puts in over your head.
You look down at your body dwarfed by his huge shirt and you bring the material up to your nose. “Smells better than you did the other day,” you giggle and find yourself proud you were able to make a coherent remark. Bucky laughs too, his eyes crinkling around the edges and his nose scrunching up and you’re rendered useless once again.
Focusing on the movie is probably your best bet but he makes it very difficult when he drapes his arm over your shoulder and starts playing with your hair. Your heart sweats and your body shakes. You thought you were immune to him but it’s closer to the truth to say you can’t get enough. Sam is right, there’s no doubt, you’re in deep.
You have a one-track mind at this point, unable to think of anything else but straddling his lap and letting his hands roam over every inch of your body. Sometimes you think he must be able to read you like a book because his hand moves from your hair and under the neck of your shirt, gently brushing over your shoulder. You shiver again and he knows you’re not cold this time. You feel his heated gaze. You can’t be saved, he’s all you crave. Looking up to meet his eyes you’re surprised when you see the same fire you feel reflected back.
In a bold move you get up and sit in his lap, draping your body over him. You start talking, trying to explain what you’re feeling but your will is not your own and you’re rambling. He lets you talk for a minute, his smile growing until he finally silences you by pressing his lips to yours. Your mind goes blank and you melt against him. He pulls away too soon, leaving you breathless. “I just want to make sure this is what you want, because it’s what I want.”
Dipping your head back down you breathe against his lips, “yes. I want it. All.” His grin becomes wicked as he inches closer, “good, because another kiss and you’ll be mine.” He doesn’t wait for your reply, his mouth covering yours and his hands slipping under his Henley. He growls into the kiss, sending shockwaves through your body and you know you’re gonna have to face it, you’re addicted to love.
Dancing Queens
Dancing Queens
Pairing: Chris Evans x Sebastian Stan (Evanstan)
Words: 3.3k
Rating: Teen and up
Warnings: Outsiders POV
A/N: So I was writing an Evanstan AU and then I got one of those pesky ideas and I wrote a different Evanstan fic in an afternoon. I don’t why my brain does what it does sometimes 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyway, this is just something super self-indulgent and fun because I just LOVE to think of all the different ways in which Chris and Seb could’ve have gotten together (or could get together in the future), and also I love meddling friends and a tad of voyeurism. So yeah. Hope you enjoy this, and the Evanstan AU should be with you soon, too! ❤️❤️
Read on AO3
***********************************************
Twenty-two months.
It's been twenty-two months since Chris met Sebastian, and Sebastian met Chris, and the two of them fell arse over teakettle for each other. Since then, these absolute fools have been driving Hayley up the wall with their mooning, constantly making goo-goo eyes, laughing too loudly at each other’s jokes, desperately dating one pretty girl after another, only for things to fizzle out again and again because, obviously, their hearts aren’t in it. Their hearts, very clearly, belong to each other. Everyone with eyes can see that.
Well. Everyone with eyes, except for Chris and Sebastian themselves, it seems.
Tonight’s no different. The club where the wrap party for Captain America: The Winter Soldier is held is thrumming with life: people everywhere, some casually dressed, some in outfits that make Hayley, who’s not opposed to showing a bit of cleavage herself and who certainly isn’t religious, feel the urge to run to the nearest church to find a confessional booth. Lights are strobing, music is booming, liquor is flowing. Normally, Hayley would be dancing on a table at this point, or trying to get Sam Jackson to do an impromptu striptease, or doing belly shots off Hemsworth’s quite frankly spectacular abs.
Tonight, though, she’s on a mission. A mission seemingly impossible, but when Hayley sets her mind to something, she won’t rest until she succeeds. For a long time, she figured that Chris and Sebastian would simply sort themselves out at some point. No two people flirt that obviously and constantly with each other without it ever turning into either an awkward one night stand or a marriage. But clearly, neither of these things has occurred yet, or else these two pillocks would’ve stopped making such pathetic heart eyes at each other by now. It’s getting a little ridiculous.
Something needs to be done, and it seems Hayley is the one who needs to do it. Well, ultimately, it’s Chris and Sebastian who need to do it – do it lots and lots of times, preferably – but she’s accepted that she’s going to have to help them get there.
Right now, Chris – beer in hand – is telling Anthony some story that involves wildly waving his hands around and almost sloshing his beer all over himself, while Sebastian looks at him like he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, laughing so hard he needs to hold on to Anthony for support. Truly, he couldn’t look any more smitten if he tried. Meanwhile, Anthony is looking between Chris and Sebastian with an expression of amused exasperation. Hayley feels for him. She’s been in his position plenty of times herself.
Right, then. To the rescue. Downing what’s left of her glass of red, Hayley puts the empty glass down on the nearest table and starts making her way through the throng towards where the guys are stationed.
“Hello, boys,” she greets them, doing a little twirl followed by a tah-dah gesture. “Missed me?”
She’s hailed enthusiastically, hugs all round and another twirl under Anthony’s raised right arm, before everyone starts clinking their drinks together again like inebriated people tend to do.
“Where’s your drink?” Chris shouts, louder than the volume of the music warrants, when he notices she’s not holding a glass for him to clink.
He’s clearly tipsy, if not a little drunk, all expansive gestures and slightly slurred words. Chris is always handsome and wonderful, but Hayley finds that he’s rarely as charming as when he’s had a bit to drink. The alcohol lowers his already low inhibitions further, rendering him even more affectionate and handsy than he usually is. Though he’d never be handsy in a pervy way. Mostly, Chris just wants to be close to people, preferably by enveloping them in a bear hug that will unfailingly last for longer than is strictly appropriate. The man loves to cuddle. That’s why it always pains Hayley to watch him struggle not to throw himself at Sebastian every time he gets a little tipsy. Somehow, despite the beer taking away almost all of his filter and sense of personal boundaries, he always retains a proper distance from Sebastian. At most, he lets their arms brush one too many times, or he reaches out to squeeze Sebastian’s shoulder when he laughs. But it’s not enough. It’s glaringly obvious how desperately Chris wants to be closer. He’s practically gagging for it, and it’s getting to the point where Hayley herself feels parched just from being around that much thirstiness.
Sebastian is only a little better. He’s more skilled at hiding his true emotions, better at pretending he likes Chris a normal amount, especially in professional settings. But more often than not, he does eventually slip up. He’ll giggle like a school boy with a crush at something Chris says, start to blush when Chris praises his acting skills, gaze at him adoringly when Chris is regaling everyone with some bonkers anecdote or other.
Quite frankly, it’s nothing short of a miracle that these boys haven’t figured out how they feel about each other yet, because Hayley’s sure pretty much everyone else has. It’s an open secret, if you will.
In response to his question, Hayley leans up to kiss Chris’s bearded cheek. “I don’t want a drink, I want to dance!”
Grabbing Chris’s free hand, she tugs him along behind her. “Come on, Christopher, show a girl what those hips can do.”
Mackie wolf whistles, taking the beer that Chris hastily hands him as he follows Hayley onto the dance floor.
Chris rises to the challenge as she knew he would. That boy has a competitive streak a mile wide – he reminds her of herself in that regard. It’s one reason why they would never work, even if they seem compatible at first glance. Way too similar.
Almost instantly, Chris’s hands drop to her waist, firmly settling on the curve of her hips while she starts to move them. They don’t go easy – that’s not the point of this, after all. Hayley winds her arms around Chris’s neck and presses herself up against him. Chris is a fantastic mover, even when he’s drunk, and dancing with him certainly isn’t a hardship. Still, Hayley can’t enjoy it the way she normally would, because her mind is elsewhere.
It’s a few meters to her right, in fact, where Sebastian, clad in dark skinny jeans and a white, v-neck shirt that’s almost see-through, is leaning against the wall. Watching them.
Oh god, the poor sod looks miserable already. He’s trying to hide it, of course, smiling through the pain, but the way he starts worrying his lower lip a few minutes in, averting his eyes only for them to dart back to their undulating hips, as if he’s compelled to make himself suffer… It’s clear as can be that Sebastian’s jealous to the point where he would probably quite like to strangle her, even if he also adores her.
Hayley dances with Chris a little while longer, just until the second song turns into the third, and then she figures she’s done enough. She pushes away from Chris, slapping him playfully on the chest.
“Good effort, my love,” she decides, before she cocks her head and adds, “But I think I’d like to dance with Sebastian, now. I’m keen to find out if I can tease out that pretty blush of his, what do you say?”
Chris’s eyes widen a fraction, but she doesn’t wait for a reply, instead turning on her heel and striding back towards Anthony and Sebastian.
“Alright, handsome,” she says, taking Sebastian by the hand. “You’re up.”
Sebastian splutters something about how he doesn’t really dance, but Hayley ignores him, pulling him along behind her. She knows Sebastian’s just sulking, because she’s seen him bust some serious (if not particularly graceful) moves over the years. He dances, alright. Granted, he isn’t as good of a dancer as Chris, but he’s light on his feet and he holds his booze better than Chris does.
Pressing in close immediately, she rests her hands on his biceps as his settle automatically on her waist. For a moment before she starts to move, she looks up at him, forcing him to look her in the eye.
“Hey, cheer up, grumpy cat.” She goes cross eyed. “Dance with me. Let’s show these Yanks how us European kids do it, eh?”
That gets Sebastian smiling again, that lovely, gorgeous smile of his that’s melting hearts all over the planet, if her friends who are more up to date on the latest celebrity gossip are to be believed. Hayley herself isn’t immune to it either, but while Sebastian certainly has his sassy side, deep down, he’s just too sweet for her. She’d bulldozer all over him, and they both know it. They’re much better as friends.
It’s fun, dancing with Sebastian, especially once he starts to really get into it. They make a striking pair, Hayley’s pretty sure. Two winsome brunettes, spinning and grinding on the dance floor, are sure to turn more than a few heads.
And sure enough, when Hayley darts a look over Sebastian’s shoulder towards the wall, Christopher Robert Evans is practically salivating. He’s staring at them so intently he’s nearly crushing his long-forgotten beer bottle between his hands, eyes so dark they almost seem black in the dim lighting. The seams of his too-tight, black t-shirt are straining with how tensely he's holding himself, and what’s more, Hayley is pretty sure things are beginning to stir inside those washed jeans of his.
She giggles, hiding her face in Sebastian’s neck.
“What’s so funny?” Sebastian sounds a bit bemused.
“Oh, just… men are stupid.”
“Hey,” he says, but there’s no heat behind it.
Hayley pulls back enough to look at him, placatingly patting his cheek. “It’s alright, love, at least you’re pretty.”
Predictably, Sebastian rolls his eyes in a poor attempt to hide the way the comment makes him blush. Good lord, the man has the biggest praise kink she’s ever seen in her life. Yet another reason why he and Chris are perfect for each other; Hayley’s pretty sure Chris would never shut up given the chance to praise Sebastian freely. Already, Chris can’t seem to help but call him sweet and talented and amazing every time he’s asked even the simplest question about his co-star.
Hayley deliberately steers them back towards the others a little, enough to make sure Chris can hear her when she calls out to him, “Oi, Christopher, do me a favour and come here for a second, will you?”
Chris starts, shaking himself out of his reverie. “What, me?”
“Yes, you.” Hayley clicks her fingers. “Come one, chop chop.”
Believing this to be his cue to leave, Sebastian lets go of her, trying to step back, but Hayley just grabs him tighter. “Oh no, I’m not done with you yet, pretty boy.”
“But-” Sebastian says, but Hayley shushes him with a finger to his lips.
“Sshhh. Trust me, okay?”
Sebastian’s eyes narrow slightly in confusion, but he doesn’t pull away. Hmm. Hayley always suspected he’d be good at following orders. She turns a bit, grabbing a handful of Chris’s shirt and pulling him closer, slotting him in behind her.
“Come on, boys,” she challenges, tilting her head up to look at each of them in turn. “Grant this old lady her dying wish of getting to dance with two handsome men at once, won’t you?”
“I’m a year older than you,” Chris protests – the big lug.
Hayley shrugs. “Yes, well, you know perfectly well a woman’s lifespan in Hollywood is significantly shorter than a man’s. Enough talking, now’s the time for dancing.”
She starts to move again, swaying her hips from side to side to the music and forcing them both to move with her. With her right hand, she feels behind her, finding Chris’s hand and placing it on her hip – where Sebastian’s hand is also resting. Their fingers touch, Sebastian’s left hand to Chris’s right, and Chris makes to pull away, but Hayley tightens her grip and doesn’t let him escape. Once it seems like Chris has stopped trying to resist, she switches to her left side to do the same thing, basically leaving the boys to hold hands on top of her hips.
“That’s it,” she nods approvingly. “Just follow my lead.”
Neither man says a word, both of them ostensibly focusing their attention on her, but in reality, Hayley is certain the only thing they’re aware of his how close to each other they’re dancing and where their hands are touching. She can feel the tension in both of them, feel their hearts beating fast where their chests are pressed to her back and front.
They’re not exactly dancing now, more of a slow grind that Hayley is pretty sure some of the women in their vicinity are shooting her jealous looks for, but she doesn’t give a flying fuck. All Hayley cares about in that moment is her mission, of which the crucial stage is coming up right...
Now.
In a smooth, calculated move, Hayley twists out from between Chris and Sebastian, causing them to stumble and fall forward – right into each other.
“Oh,” Sebastian blurts, hands coming up to brace himself. On Chris’s chest.
They both freeze, eyes growing wide in surprise but unable to look away; the proverbial deer in the headlights.
Before they have a chance to snap out of their shock and do something undoubtedly stupid that will endanger her entire mission, Hayley quickly grabs their shoulders and gives them a firm squeeze, effectively pushing them closer together.
“Very good, just keep dancing now. Atta boy.” And with a final pat, she’s gone.
Of course, she doesn’t go far, just stepping back far enough so that she’s out of their space but still close enough to have a clear view of what happens next.
Sebastian’s hands are still on Chris’s chest, one on each defined pectoral, while Chris’s raised hands are hovering awkwardly at the level of Sebastian’s midriff. They’re not moving, but they’re not moving away either, which Hayley counts as a tentative win. Skittishly, Sebastian averts his eyes to stare at a point somewhere over Chris’s right shoulder, and it’s all very awkward, until eventually, Chris cautiously lowers his arms, resting his hands lightly on either side of Sebastian’s waist.
At the touch, Sebastian visible exhales, as if he’d been holding his breath this entire time. In turn, Chris’s shoulders relax infinitesimally once he realizes Sebastian isn’t shoving him off. One of them, she’s not sure who, slowly starts to move again; just the slightest movement from side to side, but it’s enough to make Hayley clap her hands together in glee.
Slowly but surely, Chris and Sebastian start to sway together, finding a rhythm and sticking to it, almost perfectly in sync. They don’t speak, clearly terrified to do something that will break the spell, and it’s so ridiculously cute that Hayley has to fight the urge to squee.
While Sebastian is still studying that elusive spot on the far wall, Chris is watching Sebastian, looking completely enraptured. God, he’s so in love, it’s almost painful to watch. Hayley prays this won’t fall apart at the last minute, because Chris would be absolutely devastated and go all kicked puppy on them and that would be too much even for her to handle. Finally, her prayers are answered. It takes a while for Sebastian to gather his courage, but then he turns his head a fraction, and meets Chris’s eyes.
Hayley could swear she can feel the electricity crackling between them, can almost hear the sound of those pieces finally clicking into place. It’s quite possibly the most satisfying thing she’s ever witnessed.
The air around them changes, slows down, becomes thick and charged as they look deeply into each other’s eyes. All the while, they’re still moving together, Chris’s hands now gripping Sebastian’s waist more firmly as Sebastian’s hands slowly slide around to clutch at Chris’s shoulders. Chris pulls Sebastian’s hips forwards, flush with his own, and Hayley sees how Sebastian’s fingers dig into the meat of Chris’s shoulders. When Chris leans in a hair’s breadth, Sebastian responds in kind until their foreheads are touching, their noses bumping together, breathing the same air.
Chris murmurs something Hayley can’t make out, probably some sort of endearment, and then he's moving in, eyes closing as their lips meet for the very first time.
Hayley doesn’t even try stop the sound of pure joy that escapes her. She punches the air, whirling on the spot and almost bumping into Anthony. Anthony, who is beaming, grinning from ear to ear.
“You did it!” he yells, holding up his hand for Hayley to high five, which she does with feeling.
“I fucking did it!” Elated, she throws her arms around Antony’s shoulders and lets him spin her around. “Wait, wait,” she says as she’s put back on her feet again. “I need to see the rest.”
She turns back to the dance floor, just in time to see Chris lift his right hand to the side of Sebastian’s face. His big palm cradles Sebastian’s jaw as his thumb swipes almost tenderly back and forth over his cheekbone. Both of them have closed their eyes and they’ve all but stopped moving, too caught up in the kiss to have any attention to spare for dancing. Hayley can’t blame them. They’re stunning, getting lost in each other after nearly two years of helpless pining. It’s a sight she doesn’t think she’ll forget any time soon.
As she’s watching, the kiss deepens. Someone opens their mouth, the other follows suit, and suddenly there’s tongues – tongues and slick lips, hungry mouths devouring each other as if they’ve been starving for years and are finally, finally being fed.
Chris has got a tight hold of Sebastian and doesn’t look like he’s planning on letting him go anytime soon, but fortunately, Sebastian doesn’t look like he minds. In fact, he’s slowly sliding his hands down Chris’s wide back, lower and lower until they find his ass and he squeezes. Hayley can almost hear the growl Chris lets out at that, the way his fingers tighten in Sebastian’s hair, making him gasp for air.
“Whoa,” Anthony mutters next to her, “I feel like I’m seein’ some things I’m not supposed be seein’.”
Hayley’s never been a prude, far from it, but even she starts to feel a little voyeuristic. She hums. “Might be time for them to move it off the dance floor, at least.”
She wades into the crowd until she reaches the tangled mess of limbs formerly known as Chris and Sebastian, tapping them on the shoulder to try and get their attention.
“My darlings, I am ecstatic that you’ve finally come to your senses, but you might want to move this somewhere a little more private, eh?”
Neither Chris nor Sebastian really responds, which, kind of rude, but okay, she’ll let it slide just this once. Drawing the line at actually poking her nose into their business, Hayley starts to gently push at them until they finally get the hint.
“What’s – huh?” Chris finally lifts his head, giving her a dazed look.
“Just going to take you somewhere a little less public,” Hayley assures him. “See that corner over there? It has your names written all over it.”
“Fuck,” Sebastian mutters, blinking out of his trance. “Yeah, come on, quick.” He takes Chris’s hand, entwining their fingers, and starts to pull him towards the designated corner.
“Okay, then,” Hayley says brightly. “I guess my job here is done. Have fun, boys. Oh, and be safe, yeah?”
With that, she lets them go, fondly watching them stumble to their destination, where they immediately resume their lip locking. And hip locking. It takes approximately five seconds before Chris is sliding a hand down Sebastian’s thigh, lifting his leg so that he can slot their groins together more effectively and grind against him while enthusiastically continuing to suck face.
Reluctantly, Hayley turns around, smiling to herself.
Mission complete.
Now, where's Anthony? She rather thinks she owes him a dance.
and a movie
Abed Nadir lives in LA now, and there's something they still haven't done.
Word count: 1766
AO3 link in notes
“I want to make a movie.” Abed says it abruptly. It’s the reason he came, after all. And it’s important to make your point early in the conversation; otherwise it runs away from you.
“You know I’m not a producer, right?” his friend asks.
“I know that. But I wanted to be able to air the idea out. See if it’s Hollywood-ready. I know what I’m doing, but a second opinion can’t hurt. Besides, you seem to have some success.”
His friend laughs. “I mean, a couple movies in, I guess my opinion counts.” Abed cracks a smile. “What’s it about?”
“Friends. Not the show. Friends of mine. Old friends, actually. From before I moved here.”
“A movie based on your friends?”
“I was thinking my friends could be in it, actually.”
“So, a biopic?”
“Yes. I could document some portion of their lives.”
“You mean it would be a documentary.”
Abed pauses and then says, “Technically, yes, but six seasons and a documentary doesn’t have the same ring to it.”
“Sorry?”
“Nothing.”
Abed doesn’t have a roommate, but he does have friends. People that he hangs out with regularly—going out to dinner after work, having movie nights where they all bring different snacks. They have bad taste in movies, but so does he. He’s the first to admit Kickpuncher isn’t a masterpiece. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t still have his costume hanging in his closet for emergencies.
Or non-emergencies. But only if they involve watching the movie alone at two in the morning and acting out the scenes as they go. Those are acceptable.
In high school, he didn’t think he’d ever have any friends. He thought he was stuck in the underdog role, the nerd that got his books knocked out of his arms, the kid that no one wanted to be partners with. Although Abed had never actually gotten his books knocked out of his arms. He thought it was a ridiculous trope. He’d fit into the rest of the categories though.
At some point at Greendale, he’d thought he would never again have friends like the study group. These were the days, the short period that would change their lives forever. The period that they would eventually have to leave behind, but that nothing would ever measure up to again. He’d expected to spend the rest of his shallow life thinking back to these four (five, six) years with his found family. As it turns out, though, tv shows are short because of budget, because of the inability of writers to churn out more, because of low viewership. And just because they’re short doesn’t mean there isn’t more to the story. He’s happy now. He’s comfortable.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a picture of that first halloween up on his bulletin board, though.
“So, what exactly would this documentary be about?”
Abed cocks his head. “I don’t know. It would be about them. It would be about them and...I guess it would be a little bit like Friends, except funnier. I mean, the relationship and drama of it. Although the emotional bits were always my least favorite. I liked the action episodes the best.”
“The action episodes from Friends?”
“No, from when I was at Greendale.”
“Oh, sorry, yes, the episodes from when you were at Greendale,” his friend says, and Abed can tell it’s sarcasm, but he can also tell that it’s not mean.
Abed nods. “Yes. Maybe I should do something more whimsical, like that. It’s not exactly in the sitcom format, but the show never was.”
“And by whimsical, you mean…”
“Oh, you know, paintball fights, eerily accurate homages, the like. Genre-bending stuff.”
“That’s what college was like for you?”
“I told you,” Abed says. “Genre-bending stuff.”
--
Everyone still keeps in touch. Annie visits the most. She’s happy, and he’s glad he told her to take a forensics class. It’s better for her.
She visits and she asks how he’s doing (well), what he’s doing (he’s working on his portfolio before he starts trying to get a big title—it’s an important step), and where his new dreamatorium is (he doesn’t have one. He’s grown past the need for childish things like that. He doesn’t need a designated room for rendering imaginations. He’s an adult. He can do it anywhere in his house now.)
Annie’s doing well, too. She had to intern for a few years, but now she’s properly training at the FBI Academy. (“Basically, I’m, like, really fit now,” she says and laughs. “And they let me carry a gun.”
“But you already had a gun.”
“What? No I didn’t.”
“Yes, you did. Troy and I found it in your bag when you moved in.”
“You searched my bag?”)
--
Abed and Troy talk to each other sometimes, when Troy has cell service. It’s not often.
Troy didn’t bring a DVD player (which is ridiculous, Abed should have helped him pack), but he did manage to buy a crappy portable one from one of the places he’d stopped for fuel and food. Every several weeks they call, put the same DVD in, and then count down to play. Troy’s movie is always scratchy and terrible, so it’s awkward (“Pause. No, wait, play...oh no, it’s lagging again. Did it just skip over a scene? Pause.”) They dress up and make popcorn, and a couple of times they even made a blanket fort like back at Greendale.
Troy has been on his trip for longer than any of them had expected, but that’s what happens, right? And that has to be okay. He’ll be back eventually, and Abed is okay with that.
Troy says he’s been making music. It makes sense. He’d always liked writing raps for the two of them.
--
Britta visits often too. Mostly to detail him on the rampant racism and misogyny in the film industry. (“You work with these people? Abed, I can’t believe you. Do you understand the history behind this? These people have been silencing voices for decades. Blackface, yellowface, and don’t even get me started on the women’s roles in a lot of these movies.”
“They’re good movies.”
“Yes, but the impact of them on our society is astronomical!”)
He knows about all of it, anyway—he’s a muslim and half-arab man watching movies made in the twentieth century. It’s difficult not to notice the bigotry. But he knows she means well. And he likes it when she visits.
Abed shows her the neighborhood. It’s small and busy and feels like a movie set, probably because it is the movie set. He’d seen so many stories told in Los Angeles. Being here is amazing. They go to a coffee shop, and she drinks coffee while he eats a cupcake. Then, they go for burgers.
How much would it cost me to get enough paintball guns to stage a school-wide fight if the school had about one thousand people in it? Try and get back soon.
Disregard the paintball guns. It’s been done too many times.
Shirley visits the least, although he knows that she wishes she could come more. (“I’m so sorry,” she says, “I just wish I could take care of all of you, but my babies take up so much of my time.” Then, “did you know that Ben Benjamin took his first steps last week?”
“Yes. You sent me a video, remember?”
“Oh, yes. Wasn’t it nice?”
“Very nice.”)
She bakes for him. She bakes for all of them, actually, since she always makes them send pictures of themselves with the food to the group chat. It’s not like it was. She knows her worth, and she knows that they need her. “I just like to take care of you, is all,” she’d said. They sit at the table and eat. Shirley doesn’t like silence. Which is nice, because it means that she’ll listen to him talk for hours. He can’t always tell if she’s getting bored, but she doesn’t outright stop him, and that’s nice. She thinks everything is nice.
How about a vat of lava?
--
Jeff doesn’t visit the most out of all of them, but he does stay the most in touch. He’s still at Greendale, the only one other than Britta. They’re still trying to keep the school running. Britta started a bartending class, which is ironic because Britta is terrible at bartending. But being incompetent is part of Greendale’s charm, isn’t it?
When Jeff comes to visit, he wants to watch Abed’s documentaries. They’re getting good. Jeff thinks so too, and Jeff would say if he thought they were bad. Abed likes that about Jeff—he says what he thinks. Except for the sarcasm. And the lawyering.
The point is, Jeff rarely lied to them.
He does critique everything except the filmmaking, though. He jokes about Abed’s friends, about his boss, about the logo for the coffee shop at the corner of the street. He gets distracted by every conventionally attractive woman that comes on-screen, too.
“Hey, you’re doing all of this documentary filming, Abed,” he said, during his last visit.
“Yeah?” Abed pressed pause.
“Remember when you would film us? Make all those movies? Like when Pierce tried to fake his goddamn death, and you wouldn’t put down your camera even when we were all having breakdowns? Or when the dean made that commercial, and you wouldn’t put the camera down because of his breakdown?”
“Yeah, I do. Why?”
Jeff paused, and Abed turned a little to stare at him. “I don’t know. It was fun.”
“You’re right.” Abed’s brow creased. “It was fun.”
Jeff didn’t reply, so Abed pressed play again.
--
It takes a lot more planning, but Abed eventually cobbles together some things. A ragged film crew. The equipment he needs. He isn’t sure what he’s going to do with this, once it’s done. Sell it? Keep it on his shelf, along with his other documentaries? Their adventures had always seemed like too much to keep from an audience.
He types out the email a few times, many times, because he’s not sure it’s right, because it’s too long, because it’s too brief, because it’s too cliche, too plot-twist-slash-sequel-slash-unecessary-renewal. In the end, though, he deletes the whole thing and just writes what he wants to say.
--
Hi,
I want to make a movie.
A/N:  i binged this show on netflix during quarantine and it absolutely destroyed me. i immediately opened up a document to write a fix it before realising that there wasn't anything to fix, really. i just wasn't used to show creators actually knowing how to write, so props to dan harmon for that, i guess. i have a bunch more fic ideas, so i'll definitely get to work posting them soon!! thank you so much for reading and please leave a comment and/or kudos if you liked it! (all email addresses in this fic are either fake and made up or blatant and obnoxious references to the show! you'll never know)
2020 in review
I was tagged by @apeironaxiomaton to look back at 2020 and pretty much to try and not hate it so much! Thank you!!
Also I’m stealing the idea of putting everything under a cut, which I have never done in my life (and probably should start doing) bc it makes things neat as heck. Almost none of these are in a particular order.
Top 5 movies I saw this year:
Volevo Nascondermi by Giorgio Diritti - this movie is REALLY good AND I have good memories tied to the protagonist for Reasons I’m gonna cry bye (a shame that I’ve only watched this other excellent movie starring Elio Germano tonight bc it should be on this list)
Emma (2020)
The King’s Speech
Spirited Away or Porco Rosso - I had watched the first before and never the second so I think the fairer choice would be Porco Rosso but I’m not entirely convinced of it
The Wolf of Wall Street - look, I simply have a weak spot for stories that are so absurd they can be nothing but real (see “the other Elio Germano movie”)
Top 5 TV shows I watched this year:
Murdoch Mysteries - it will stay engraved in the first place of EVERY chart in saecula saeculorum and NO nothing can take its place I don’t care
Peaky Blinders
Alias Grace - which I was sure was a movie? I was so shocked to discover it isn’t like was it really six hours long what the
The Queen’s Gambit
Suburra: Blood on Rome - “The series was developed by Daniele Cesarano and Barbara Petronio for Netflix, making it its first Italian-language original television series.” I’ll be honest, some bits were a little bit hmm-inducing. Not the best tv series I’ve ever seen, but it managed to be fun and easy to watch. Suspenseful even!
Top 5 Songs:
So there’s a reason why Spotify said I’m an octogenarian this year and for as much as I complain about it... it’s right... Spotify’s right. And it will only get worse, I’m afraid. All the songs are from the same playlist which was my most listened to (and is the most interesting to share imo). I swear I have listened to other, newer things as well.
Shake That Thing by The Abe Lyman’s California Orchestra
Night Hawk Blues by The Coon-Sander’s Nighthawk Original Orchestra
Where the Sweet Forget-Me-Nots Remember by Merle Johnston and His Ceco Couriers (I’ve loved these flowers since I was a kid it was so nice to find a song with them in the title!!)
Dew Dew Dewey Day by Nat Shilkret
The Panic is On by Mezz Mezzrow And His Swing Band
Top 5 Books I Read This Year:
so this is embarrassing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I “bought” an insane amount of books and read a grand total of...like...t w o. It was actually like four and some short stories (which I hated and are therefore banished from the good boy list) so I’m gonna list my silly little titles and make my silly little comments about them all. From “””””best””””” to “worst” we have:
The Adventures of a Modest Man by Robert W. Chambers - I literally cannot shut up about this book and, yes, it is the one tied to this illustration, about which I equally cannot shut up about. It’s so horrible that it makes a 360 and comes back as good, but not before hitting you with a cardboard tube for a laugh and subsequently stabbing you in the kidneys just because it can. I think we can confidently state that we are in the “I didn’t say it was good, I said I liked it” realm. I have so many questions about this book. Why was it written? Was it taking itself seriously? Was it commissioned by someone? Why is it so gay but only if you know that the author is a man? Maybe it’s a parody? Was it an experiment made by the author to test his own skill? I know jack about literature, unfortunately, so grain of salt here but it made me feel strong feels. Not that I could identify any of them if you asked, but they’re definitely there.
Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot - I’m counting this in bc what is a book if not a patchwork of silly little paragraphs anyway so yes, we have a collection of poems. Not only do I know jack about literature; as a matter of fact, I know jack about poetry as well! All I’m gonna say is: I like cute things, I like cats, the poems were cute AND about cats. I really liked it! I often find myself going back and reading again specific parts just for the delight it is to read them out loud! I also may or may not have named the cats you can adopt in Stardew Valley after some of Eliot’s cats. The movie Cats (2019) did one good thing: making me read this.
How You Can Keep Fit by Rudolph Valentino - Yes, that is correct. A book on fitness written (in English!) by silent movie superstar Rodolfo Valentino. It is less than 100 pages on real, actual exercises that the reader can replicate in the comfort of their own house with little to no equipment. With a sprinkle of old timey manly manner of speaking, a few anecdotes from the author’s childhood in ye merry Italian countryside, a dusting of precious advice against ice-cream, and a dash of genuine intrigue for these newly discovered “vitamins” everyone is talking about. Overall a fascinating read that I treasure dearly! Valentino also wrote a book of poems, which I am absolutely thrilled to read this year.
For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway - Hmm.. I have mixed feelings about this one. Whenever the original language of a book is English, I instinctively want to read it in that language. Because I can! And because that way I get to read exactly what the author wrote. If it was another language, I’d get a translation, make peace with the fact that selling my soul to acquire perfect knowledge of all things is morally questionable, and call it a day. Problem: I’m a sucker for old books. And old books I did find indeed. There were three books by Hemingway for sale, very pretty, and for an almost symbolic price too so I bought them. They are Italian translations from the late 50s and my plan was to go through one in Italian, one in English, and after that, decide in which language to read the last one. I believe it was a mistake for me to start with Italian in Hemingway’s case. He’s known for having a very, VERY peculiar style that is integral to how the novels are perceived and I feel like I've robbed myself of literal peace of mind. For as much as I found the story interesting, I could not ignore the voice in the back of my head that kept wondering “was it necessary to render it like this?”. It did make me feel feels and think thoughts, but honestly? It was partially for the wrong reasons imo. It’s one of those books you should read at least once in your life, I guess, so I’m definitely glad I did it! Surprisingly, it captured me more than I expected and trapped me into its little world. I could clearly imagine the scenes in my head, which hadn’t happened in years! I’m really excited to move on to the next two books and finally be able to say if I appreciate his style or not.
Top 5 positive things that happened to me in 2020:
Visited Rome and took a stroll around on my own (sort of) for the first time in my life. I had never seen it at night :) Right after that I celebrated my birthday and got some cute gifts, including sweets that were sent all the way from Australia!!
Managed to buy my mom a gift, which is possibly the only real Accomplishment of 2020.
Took a bizarre trip this summer (I know, guilty) and fell in love with Slovenia
Discovering I like textile arts kinda gave me hope for myself and for the future. I say kinda for I dare not think concretely of anything too positive lest it should be prematurely taken from me. I shan’t elaborate. It is what it is.
Therapy!!!
DVHS Reactions - Prologue
Finally got around to reading DVHS! Okay, let’s start.
I’m going to try to avoid accidentally spoiling it. I’m fully aware of who the mastermind is, because it made a certain somebody miserable, so congrats there. Anyway, enjoy!
Ooh, action prologue!
Ah, the Makoto wakeup scenario.
Leopard print? I don’t remember if this was in any of the games, but I’m not good with remembering pictures.
Wait, she’s Japanese? I could’ve sworn Myth said something about her not being Japanese.
Also, is Camila a normal Japanese name?
And we meet Abe. Super serious. Not sure if what I’ve heard about him being the traitor is true. He feels exhausting to be around. He is exhausting to be around.
Wow, don’t be so mean.
Also, are security cameras not a normal thing in high schools?
How do you know this, Abe?
Maeda also looks exhausting. He looks like he would have a weed birthday.
Rikimaru. Who…I now see her hair as just being one rendered mass. Like with 3D modeling.
Matsumoto. Buff dude. He dies. Definitely. Unless you can pull off something that subverts all the expectations… maybe? No idea at this point.
Matsumoto is dad friend, confirmed.
I really do want a Camila and Abe friendship. It would be fun.
“Ridiculous! Utterly ridiculous!” I’m kidding.
Aoyama. Ultimate Blogger! He sounds like a jerk. I think he’s the rival, and I love him. I don’t know why.
And Saito! Ultimate Archer. I don’t think you’re supposed to have jewelry on while you’re doing archery. Or maybe that’s just necklaces. I never did hear about that in archery classes.
“Not that most comfortable orientation I’ve ever been to.” I feel like that’s gonna be relevant later on.
Yes! Friendship go!
Miyuki! Camila, meet your future girlfriend. Who…dies horribly? Probably.
Are we sure Hamasaki and Fujimoto have not met before? I feel like one of these two is gonna get killed, and the other one is not going to take it well. That, or they’re going to pull a Romeo and Juliet. Or one of them is evil. Or both of them! That would be hilarious.
Ikeda, who is… not very interesting, but also chill.
Yasu...who is…he’s probably the Ultimate Friend for a reason.
Sasaki. She sounds fun to be with. She sounds sweet.
Yoshida. I don’t like her. I don’t know why. I do not like her and I…kind of hope she dies tbh.
Oshiro! Yes. Slightly less sterling than I believed she would be, but I like her.
Nakamura! I know why he is Iris’s favourite, and he is too flawless to be real. He’s like Daring Charming from Ever After High, only…more.
Am I humming the execution theme? Oops.
“Who pissed in his Cheerios?” Oh my god. That’s funny, but I still don’t like you. Are there Cheerios in Japan?
Hamasaki…I want you to know I have a sticky note with everyone’s talents and names on it, because I need it. I don’t know why that’s important.
An imposter…so are they despair? Are they really despair and their real headmaster is Junko and their fake headmaster is… Tsumugi? Or the Imposter, ha.
C-c-c-c-mon, c-c-c-c-mon, go, go, go, go, go, go!
Pity.
Abe…feels like the traitor.
Note to self, confirm if the anon kg has gender neutral locker rooms. Or locker rooms at all.
Anyway, commentary is exhausting, so have fun!
[10:35 pm]
So, this was the first time, since Taeyong, a man was in your apartment.
You unlocked the door to your place and told Yuta to go in first. He seemed...a little nervous, if you didn’t know any better.
“Make yourself at home,” you said, feeling a little uneasy yourself.
Yuta cleared his throat. “Can I take off my shoes?”
“Oh, yeah! Of course!” You were in your flip flops so you were already very comfortable. Yuta took off his shoes, balancing himself with ease. You needed to cling onto walls for dear life whenever you took off more complicated shoes. You added, “Are you hungry?”
Yuta coughed. “What?”
He was acting very...unlike him. Usually, his silver tongue rendered you speechless but tonight it’s like you had the upper hand in conversation. You didn’t know how to feel about it.
“I was going to order pizza...unless you wanted something else.” You wondered if he was a cheese or pepperoni guy.
What if he didn’t like pizza period? He lost points with you when he never watched Grease. But you hoped to rectify that with watching it with him tonight.
He eased up, completely unaware of your panic. “Oh.” He put his hands in his pockets. “Pizza’s good.”
“Any specific toppings?” You asked.
He shook his head. ”Whatever you want, Y/N.” His eyes were big and thoughtful.
“Oh. Okay. Well, take a seat. I’ll bring some blankets.” You motioned for him to sit on the living room couch. Your flat screen was set up in front of it. You had your DVD player at the ready.
You went to grab your Grease DVD and some blankets.
This was innocent. Right?
Why did you feel like you were doing something forbidden? That was impossible. You and Yuta were friends. Have been for a while now. Even with everything that went down with Taeyong, Yuta had always been kind to you.
Sure, he teased you and flirted up a storm almost every chance he got. But after you and Taeyong called it quits, you were a wreck and Yuta ceased the teasing and supported you like a true friend.
So what if this was the first time he came over? You were watching a movie like two old friends.
You really needed to stop overthinking things, Y/N...
“Y/N?” Yuta called from the living room. “Do you need help?”
Yuta in your bedroom. Yuta in your bedroom. No no no no no.
Your throat went dry. You grabbed your water bottle from your nightstand and took a huge swig of water. “Nah, I got it! Thanks Yuta!”
You brought the blankets and the DVD. You set it all on the couch beside Yuta
“I’ll put the movie in.” Yuta grabbed the DVD as he got up from the couch.
You nodded eagerly. “Great. I’ll order the pizza.” Standing, you pulled up the PizzaWhat app on your phone to order a pepperoni pizza and some good ol’ stuffed cheesy bread.
Lord, you’re gonna have to rein in your love of food in front of him. And pepperoni? Won’t that make your breath funky? Thank God you didn’t like anchovies because that would push anyone away and why are you thinking about what your breath would smell like-
“Y/N?” Yuta interrupted your thoughts. He stood in front of you.
“Yeah?” How freaked out did you look?
“You okay?” He asked, genuinely concerned. Not a trace of humor. Not even his trademark smirk.
You nodded. “Yeah...I just-“
“It’s weird...isn’t it?” He finished your thoughts. Like he typically did. Didn’t make you any less shocked, though.
So he thought that, too. “Yeah...Ever since Tae-“
“You don’t have to talk about him if you don’t want to.”
“I know...”
“I mean, if you want to, I promise to keep my eyerolls to a minimum.” He winked.
You laughed.
They weren’t as hostile to each other these days but you could tell there would always be tension.
Yuta smiled at hearing you laugh. Mister Colgate Optic White.
You admitted, “But yeah, I do feel a little nervous. Having you here...”
You’d be stupid to deny that Yuta was the most attractive person you’d ever seen.
Yuta’s eyes lit up right before you. Did he read your mind?
You sighed. “I’m just a very awkward individual. But you know this.”
Yuta shook his head. “You’re just fine, Y/N.” You could feel a lot of warmth in what he said.
You didn’t realize what he really meant to say until much much later.
“Well, the pizza’s gonna get here in forty five so we can start watching. That okay?”
Yuta nodded as he sat down. He motioned for you to sit beside him. He already took your Looney Tunes blanket for himself and wrapped himself up. He was as content and soothed as a child on his birthday. You blushed at how fond you were of him. It turned out you felt this way for a while now but never had the nerve to confront it. You wrapped yourself in your One Direction blanket, earning some raised eyebrows from him. You giggled, feeling more at ease each moment you were together.
When you reached the scene where the love interests Danny and Sandy were on their first date, Yuta surprised you by tickling your feet with his.
“That’s cold, you fool!” You laughed.
He chuckled evilly.
You didn’t want to back down so you tickled his legs and he yelped.
“Ha! Not so funny now, eh?” You asked.
Yuta gaped. “You need to know your place, sweets.”
He moved himself closer to you and tickled you with his hands.
It was no secret that you were so ticklish that it was one of your trademark weaknesses. And for Yuta to exploit that...The nerve.
You had to wonder if he was just as ticklish as you were. It was only fair.
“Yuta...” You cried. “Please...I need air...” You were laughing so hard. Your stomach was killing you. Perhaps the abs would arrive before Christmas.
Yuta backed off, fearing he may have overstepped. “You good?”
You winced. “Ow.”
He frowned. “Y/N?”
“I think you...scratched me. It burns. Can you check if it’s bleeding?” You motioned for him to check your shoulder.
Yuta’s humor completely vanished. “Yeah yeah show me where-“
You jumped him. You straddled him, flashing him a devilish smile. “Got you.”
Yuta gasped. “Well, I’ll be damned.”
You didn’t waste another second and tickled his abdomen. As thin as Yuta was and as much as you wanted to invite him over for dinner to make him eat more since you first met, he surprised you.
He was built. You could run your hands through the ripples of his pecs.
Anyway.
So...it turned out he was very ticklish. Maybe even more ticklish than you.
“Y/N...Please...I’m begging you,” Yuta said between gasps. Tears were running down his cheeks.
“What’s that? You want more?” You hovered over him and tickled even harder.
“Y/N, please.”
“I’m sorry...what was that?” You teased.
“Y/N,” he growled.
You froze then and he turned the tables. He took your arms and flipped your positions over. He had incredible upper body strength, you realized.
He was on top of you, your back on the couch. “Having fun, yet?”
You had to catch your breath from laughing so hard and the shock of where you were at that instant. His aura was overwhelming and you wanted to deny it. You wanted to deny that there were feelings there. You wanted to be his friend. It was too soon. You needed time to get over-
You lifted yourself up to him and crashed your lips into his. He stood still for a moment, in disbelief, and for a moment, you feared that you had overstepped. When you were about to let go and apologize and leave your own apartment and flee across the country, he eased your mind.
He pulled you closer and wrapped his arms around you. Hugging you so tightly and deepening the kiss. You two sat up and looked at each other.
“I’m sorry,” you said, “I didn’t mean to-“
Yuta smirked. “Oh, yes you did.”
You blushed and looked at the TV screen, completely forgetting how far into the movie you were in. “Fine! I did.”
He took hold of your face and made you look at him.“You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this, Y/N,” he said in a low tone. His voice sent your lower region to another realm.
“Really?” You were shocked.
“Don’t act like you didn’t know,” he said, blush creeping into his cheeks. That made you smile.
“I didn’t. I just assumed you flirted with anyone with a heartbeat. It’s in your nature,” you said. From the night you two first spoke, his trademark smirk made a frequent appearance in the past year. He flirted with you to piss Taeyong off. So you didn’t pay that much mind to it as time went on.
But then you got to know him. Befriend him. Confide in him. He understood you. You empathized with him. You saw the good, the bad, and the ugly in each other. But neither of you ran for the hills.
Ever since the breakup, he was more attentive. He never overstepped, though. He kept his distance and let you wallow. But sometimes he knocked on your door and left a tub of French Vanilla ice cream at your doorstep because he knew it was your favorite. But now you were done wallowing. You wanted a new beginning.
With Yuta.
He chuckled at your remark. “No, I don’t.”
“You told my Aunt Winona she couldn’t be my aunt. She looked like my older sister,” you said as you rolled your eyes. Yuta was a cheesy flirt. But he made it work for him. And you loved it.
“I keep my best material for you, flower,” he said. It was the first time tonight he said his nickname for you. You realized how much you missed it.
“Sure,” you said skeptically but still loved his words.
He kissed your cheek. “I want this. Do you?”
You did but you still had your doubts. Maybe it was too soon. Maybe you still needed to figure out who you were without Taeyong before you can put yourself out there.
Or maybe you could just let yourself be happy.
“I do,” you said.
His face broke out into the brightest, most heartwarming smile you’d ever seen. It was like you’d given him the biggest gift. “I...” He stopped himself. “You have no idea...”
You hugged him. Because you liked what it felt like to have him in your arms. He felt safe and warm. You felt an immense, inexplicable joy.
“I’m all in, Yuta,” you said.
He hugged you back tighter. He refused to let go.
He kissed the crown of your head and moved closer to your ear.
“As much as I’d like to indulge you and watch Grease for you, I don’t think I’ll be able sit straight.”
His husky voice caused you to lose your breath. “Is that so?” You asked suggestively.
“Maybe we can-“ Yuta’s eagerness was put to a stop.
There was a knock at your door. It was the first time you both cursed a pizza delivery person.
When you sat down and ate at the dining room table, Yuta licked his lips, innocently enjoying his pizza slice but sending you into a frenzy. He offered to feed his pizza slice to you and you realized your appetite was of a different kind.
“I’m not hungry anymore,” you whispered.
Yuta nearly dropped the slice on the floor. He put it down on his plate, got up from his seat, and moved over to yours. He just looked down at you, waiting. You took his hand and quickly led him into your bedroom.
plaudite. acta est fabula: thots on my third vlr playthrough
annnnnd done
Tumblr media
with all the alt timelines down and all but two secret files obtained, i’m feeling pretty good ending my 3rd (and probably last for at least a long, long time) vlr playthough at a slick 20 hours. i’m pretty excited for my dual phds in metaphysics and philosophy, earned from completing the famed “tripletion” (triple completion), to come in the mail!! anyway, i enjoyed the game, but holy shit, do i have some things to say (spoilers and everything else beneath the cut as always).
i guess i’ll start with the fact that this is a hell of time to pick this game up again, concerned as it is with quarantines and pandemics and plagues and all that. Radical-6 I think hit me harder than it did when I first played this game when i was 15 (context: i turned 21 this last december), for obvious reasons. I remember at one point the game says that 100,000 people died from R6 and it was a huge, global tragedy ... weird to see that so directly mirrored in just the US headlines alone. I don’t have much more to say about the pandemic aspect of the game, but it was a weird thing to start off my playthrough confronting.
Like I mentioned, my first playthrough was when I was 15, my second I think I was 17, and here I am 4 years later. So why do I keep going back to this game? Well, for one, the plot is dense enough, and my brain is sparse enough, that i find myself surprised by one aspect or another every time. This time, Dio’s blackmailing Sigma to get the Axelever (sp? who cares), how much I liked K, and a lot of the plot after the final puzzle room were surprises for me. That being said, there were also things I dreaded and did not want to revisit: Quark’s and Alice’s suicidality, the part after the first AB game where you go to three different rooms and people info dump on you, most of the puzzle rooms tbh, and good god the part where Luna’s face melts off. I hate it. I hated it at 15, I hate it now.
And, though my memories are quite fuzzy on ZTD, I’ll say (expanding on Luna’s face melting off) that this is the only game in the series that inspires genuine dread from me. I think, honestly, that it’s 70% how uncanny the models are. K is the only that looks remotely OK, and that’s because he’s a big silly suit of armor in a monk robe. On the flip side, though, this uncanny valley I think works tonally very well for the game. It makes me feel uncomfortable to look at the visuals. Half the environments look like they’re from the original Silent Hill, for God’s sake. It’s not good, but it’s serviceable, and even functional in an accidental sort of way. However, the visuals are the reason I’ve never been able to recommend this game to other people (that and the walls of text, the obscure psuedoscientific rants, the way Alice’s tits are just out ...). 999 is far-and-away the more charming game visually, but I think VLR in its own way has carved out a visual style that works, though it’s jarring initially. Though, I do wonder how approachable the game is in 2020 compared to in 2012, or in 2014 when i played it. I think our need for quality graphics and disdain for poor graphics (especially this sort of ugly, gumby shit) have only increased since. I guess if anyone has any more thoughts on how they feel about the graphics and how approachable it makes the game, pls feel free to dm me. I’d love to talk about how weird this game is.
Changing subjects, I remember liking the music quite a bit more on my earlier playthroughs. Maybe that’s nostalgia talking, or maybe I’ve just grown as a music listener since high school. Probably both. I think it’s really appropriate for the game and great for setting a mood (and I love, love the twist in the credits track), but I think some tracks were overused. “Dun dun .... Dun dun ... Dun dun”  ad nauseam. Uh oh! I know that track! Looks like something deeply horrifying is about to happen! ^_^ I sure hope it’s not that same ugly rendering of Alice being stabbed in the chest :3c (it is. it is the same ugly rendering of Alice being stabbed in the chest.)
Maybe I’ve come across as overly critical, but I do have a deep appreciation for this game. I think that it easily has the best premise I’ve ever, ever come across in a video game, and, no jokes, every game I’ve played since I first came across VLR has failed in comparison to how absolutely genius i think this game is. I’m not exaggerating. The way the plot mirrors the actions of the player, the unique incentivisation of replaying, the way it lets me just be straight up evil occasionally, the twists, the turns, the way i had to cut off my own arm using a warehouse door. the list goes on. The reveal of Zero Sr. is, I think, the most impactful twist in a piece of media i’ve ever experienced. Perhaps I’m a buffoon, but i think this game slam dunks it in terms of pure plot showmanship. that said, i think the exact details of what’s going on where and why (especially at the end irt Kyle, but that’s more of an issue to do with ZTD, and we’ll come to that when we come to that) can get quite murky.
Admittedly, the game does explain what’s happening; in fact, oftentimes it takes an infuriating amount of time walking through the minutia of what was going on where (the infamous door and map animations are infamous for a reason), but i think that a vague gesture toward the plot is all i need, or really all i get from the game at the end of the day. For me, the plot is more of a vehicle for the scenarios of the nonary games, not the other way around. In a sense, I could care less who’s at what point in time where -- just let me brutally betray this old man in a prisoner’s dilemma situation.  And the game, after pontificating, eventually does. and I fucking love that. God, I adore just smashing that betray button.
And that’s the fun of the game. Past the over-detailed plot, the predictable music, the gummy looking character models, I love vlr because of how it lets me interact with its world and its characters. I always get to choose either ally or betray, and what happens happens because of that choice that I made. I wish more video games operated like that. Also, I just love Phi. I know this paragraph isn’t about her, but i love rude girls.
So, I think that’s that. VLR is a mixed bag, but I’m ecstatic that it evens exists, bizarre as it is.
i’ll be starting my ZTD playthrough probably soon. I don’t remember much about the game besides playing on launch day, finishing it within 48 hours, and being vaguely disappointed, but it’ll be good to move on from all this murdering in VLR to a whole different set of murders.
Women Directors in Anime Panel - Transcript
Here are the slides and audio. (I dunno why you’d want the audio if you’re reading a transcript, but hey, who am I to judge.)
Prior to the start of the panel proper, I played the Animator Expo shorts “Endless Night” and “Tomorrow From There” so the early comers weren’t stuck sitting around with nothing to do. I then put on the first Kyousougiga PV as a lead-in to the presentation.
Hi guys, and welcome to Women Directors of Anime. I’m Micchy. You can find me on Twitter @liuwdere, where I post very bad content most of the time and also have opinions on figure skating.
To start us off: Who can name an anime director? Anyone, go as basic as you like.
Hayao Miyazaki, the obvious one.
Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Ninja Scroll.
Challenge: who can name a female anime director?
Sayo Yamamoto.
That’s cheating, I showed her name earlier. Well, anyway, point is, they’re a bit harder to think of.
Raise your hand if you’ve seen one of these shows. Looks like just about all of you. Yuri on Ice? I see a few Yuri on Ice fans here. (Audience member: “I don’t know what that is.”) Well, congratulations, you have seen an anime directed by a woman!
Why talk about anime directors? I’ve seen several panels about fictional representations, strong female characters, so I would also like to bring some attention to the real-world anime industry and representation in that aspect of anime. There are a ton of women working as key animators, writers, in-betweeners in anime, but very few have managed to get the higher roles of production. This is not to say the lower roles are not important—they’re super important. With key animators, I’m a huge fan of Megumi Kouno, who key animated Shelter, if you’ve seen that. This topic is kind of arbitrary, but there are some talented ladies out there and I want to talk about them. Also, honestly, it’s also possible to be very comprehensive because there are like, 25 of them.
What do directors do? Basically they oversee anime production. Their involvement can vary; some of them are very involved in the storyboarding, the music choices, the writing, while others are a little more hands-off, a little manager-like. Some directors rise on the production side—they’re good at managing people, good at making sure people have their stuff done on time, and that’s what gets them in charge. Some of them start as key animators and eventually take over the lead visual development. Of course, they are all beholden to the will of the production committee, which is made up of the sponsors and execs in charge of the show, because money—money’s gotta come from somewhere.
Where are all these ladies? If you look through the industry, they tend to be clustered in a few genres. Number 1: kids’ shows and long-running franchises. We’re talking things like Precure, with the Suite Precure, Happiness Charge Precure, and Heartcatch Precure movies. [Yoko Ikeda, Chiaki Kon, and Rie Matsumoto] all started by directing episodes of the show before taking charge of the movie. Cardfight Vanguard G, the second season. [NOTE: This is actually inaccurate; Yui Umemoto is not a woman. Apologies for the mistake.] The File of Young Kindaichi Returns, also the second season. [Both Umemoto and Ikeda] were taking over established franchises.
Where else? We’ve got kids’ shows, and obviously, anime for women. We’re talking shoujo and josei manga adaptations, otome games, what I like to call “manservice” (though this genre classification is really loose), and boys’ love.
With shoujo manga, you’ve got Vampire Knight (anime Twilight), Otome Yokai Zakuro, Nodame Cantabile (a romcom about music students), and Skip Beat. We’ve got Sailor Moon Crystal season 3, Ristorante Paradiso (old man moe), the fifth season of Natsume Yuujinchou (Kotomi Deai taking over from Takahiro Omori), and Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. (I hear a few shouts, nice.)
Otome games: These are visual novel dating sims where you play as a heroine character and get your choice of pretty boys to date. On that side of things you’ve got La Storia della Arcana Famiglia, Magic-kyun Renaissance, Diabolik Lovers, and its sequel Diabolik Lovers More Comma Blood—directed by two different women, because of course they are. (This is my favorite bit of Diabolik Lovers—you throw her into the pool. Just throw her in a pool.)
Manservice: This is what I like to classify the sports shows, the boy idol shows, the historical romances and stuff. We’ve got Meganebu! (cute boys doing cute things in a glasses club), Hakkenden, Prince of Stride; Free! (with one exclamation point), Cheer Boys!! (with two exclamation points), and Yuri!!! on Ice (with three exclamation points).
Boys’ Love: There’s a conversation to be had here about how women are kind of co-opting gay men’s stories, but that’s a topic for another day; I’m not talking about that today. You’ve got This Boy cycle from Soubi Yamamoto. These are a series of independent films, all short. Doukyuusei from Shouko Nakamura, a lovely story about two high school boys falling in love. And on the trashier side of things we have stuff like Junjou Romantica, World’s Greatest First Love, and Gakuen Heaven. Personally, I recommend Gakuen Handsome.
It’s important to note that even in these genres, most of the anime is still directed by men. Super Lovers—anyone?—that’s directed by a man. And of course, you can find women elsewhere; these are just the genres you’re most likely to find women. After all, who better to make anime for women than women?
Where else are they? If you look towards the edges of the industry—the avant-garde, the experimental animation showcase projects—you can see that some of these projects give younger women a chance to take charge of their own short films. Space Dandy was supposedly directed by Shinichirou Watanabe and Shingo Natsume, but in actuality, they gave a lot of creative reign to the individual episode directors, which is why every episode looks so different. Some of them were women. Panty and Stocking was another case of this. There’s also Japan Animator Expo, a series of web shorts released over several years, which featured quite a few women.
Talking about the women in particular: I’ve grouped them for convenience. I’m going to start with the ladies at Kyoto Animation.
A little about KyoAni: KyoAni is a unique studio in that all their animation is done in-house with a salaried staff. This is the case with most of the industry; most other studios hire animators freelance. Okay, you come in, you draw these few cuts, you go home. The only other major studio to do this—to have a salaried staff—is Studio Ghibli. Kyoani also has a strong focus on training young talent. Their veteran animators will spend a lot of time providing guidance to the younger staff. (Another studio that does this is Studio Toei, which produces Precure.) Both of these factors make it very conducive to nurturing young talent. Two of the names at Kyoani are Naoko Yamada and Hiroko Utsumi.
Naoko Yamada [the first female staff director at Kyoani] is probably best known for directing K-On. What I want you to notice about Yamada is her astute attention to character animation and body language. If you’ve seen any Kyoto Animation shows, you know what I mean; [the characters] act in specific ways, and [the animation is] very shiny, very polished. This particular attention to body language is what eventually got her the directorial position for A Silent Voice, which is about a deaf girl. Obviously [the girl] communicates through sign language, so you can see why the body language would be important there. (Also, [Yamada] likes legs. She has a lotta legs in her storyboards. It’s pretty obvious; you see knees all over the place.)
[A Silent Voice PV]
Going on to another woman at Kyoani: Hiroko Utsumi, who directed Free. It should be pretty obvious that this show was helmed by a woman just from the butts and abs on display [for the female gaze]. I mean, characters in-universe state, “Oh my god, those are really good butts and chests and abs and shoulders.” So that’s a thing.
Here’s where I get a little wibbly-wobbly: What I like to call the “Penguindrum alumni.” This is because there were several women working on this particular show that later went on to head their own projects. To talk about them, I need to talk about Kunihiko Ikuhara. This guy is the infamously eccentric director of Revolutionary Girl Utena, Penguindrum, and Yurikuma Arashi. He’s heavily influenced by the late Osamu Dezaki, with a strong focus on visual metaphor, cinematic language, and very surreal imagery. On one of his projects, Penguindrum, there were a bunch of ladies who were episode directors and assistant directors who later went on to lead their own projects.
The first one I’m going to talk about is Mitsue Yamazaki. A lot of her work is really pretty, but personally my favorite is her comedy work on Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. Here’s a clip where two boys play a dating sim game and get a little too into it.
[Nozaki-kun - Tomoda]
Another one of these ladies who worked on Penguindrum is Shouko Nakamura. She did a lot of early work at Studio Gainax working on Gurren Lagann and Panty and Stocking. You can see the Gainax influence in her style with loose, relaxed lineart—you could contrast it with, for instance, KyoAni’s polished realism. Last year, she directed a boys’ love film adapted from a manga by Asumiko Nakamura, Doukyuusei.
[Doukyuusei PV].
If you’re wondering which episode she did on Panty and Stocking, it’s the one where Panty’s sex tape gets leaked.
Akemi Hayashi: She saved the human race from the Zentradi in 2009. Actually, no, she didn’t. Fun fact: her name happens to share the kanji from a possible Chinese rendering of Lynn Minmay, from Super Dimension Fortress Macross, which made researching this one kind of hard. (I was like, I wanna find out about this director, but was only getting results for this anime girl. I like Macross and all, but that wasn’t what I wanted.)
Akemi Hayashi for real: She, like Shouko Nakamura, did early stuff at Gainax. You can see her work going way, way back—if you’ve seen the 1997 anime Revolutionary Girl Utena, she did key animation on the opening sequence for that. She’s been the animation director for a number of high profile projects, including Casshern Sins [and] the Rebuild of Evangelion films. She hasn’t had a full TV series or movie debut yet, but she has directed a few short films and the penguin episode of Space Dandy. What I’m going to put on for you next is a short film done for a collaboration project called Ani*Kuri 15: fifteen one-minute shorts from different creators in the industry. Hers was called “Namida no Mukou,” roughly “from behind tears.” Like Shouko Nakamura, she also has a strong focus on fluid animation. I especially like her use of subtleties in facial expression and body language, conveying emotion through that.
[Ani*Kuri 15, “Namida no Mukou”]
Getting to directors who did not work on Penguindrum (which is a ridiculous classification in itself): My personal favorite, Sayo Yamamoto. This lady is super extra: when she was in college, she wanted to work on animation, but the faculty told her, “No, you can’t work on animation.” She said, “Heck, I’m working on animation anyway,” and did. She caught the attention of director Satoshi Kon to work on Millennium Actress. Stuff happened and she didn’t end up working on that, so her first work at Studio Madhouse was some animation on Trava, which later became the basis for the movie Redline, if you’ve seen that. There she got noticed by Shinichiroh Watanabe, director of Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. She was brought on to be an episode director on Champloo, and that’s where she says she first got creative control over her project.  [Yamamoto] has also directed a lot of opening and ending sequences; if you’ve seen the first ending sequence to Attack on Titan, that was all her: the sketchy charcoal drawing, that’s her.
Yamamoto’s one of those creatives that has a strong influence over story direction as well as the visuals. For instance, she has a fixation on the femme fatale character, as well as gender and sexuality in general—especially female and queer sexuality. You’ve got Michiko and Hatchin, which is about Latina women, one of them a lesbian. The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, literally an entire series about what makes the femme fatale—Fujiko Mine, the femme fatale character in the long-running franchise Lupin III—what makes her tick, and why is she bad? That show is about interrogating that.
Yuri on Ice also addresses sexuality in a way that’s a little more subtle than her previous works—YOI is a lot lighter, less gritty than the “sex and murder” tone of Fujiko Mine. Part of this is because it is a collaboration with manga artist Mitsurou Kubo. But you can still see hints of this fixation on sexuality and femininity in [for instance] episode 3, where Yuri literally works to channel his inner Fujiko Mine. There’s also a queer character in Fujiko Mine, so yeah, gender and sexuality is a big thing in Yamamoto’s work.
Also, butts. Sayo Yamamoto isn’t that open to giving interviews, but from people who work with her, we have reports that yeah, she was very insistent that they draw butts very well. She says figure skaters have such nice butts you can put things on them, and was really insistent that the staff draw them all. Also, she is on record saying that she liked the scenes in Lupin III where Fujiko took her shirt off—make of that what you will.
Beyond her fixation on butts and sex, she also has a focus on fairy tale imagery and sketchlike charcoal/pencil drawings. This is the ending sequence of Rage of Bahamut (which is getting a sequel this season, I’m so excited) and it’s quite gorgeous.
[Rage of Bahamut ED]
Wasn’t that pretty? (Audience member: yes.) As much as I would like to talk about Sayo Yamamoto all day—I will seriously talk about Sayo Yamamoto all day if you let me, so don’t let me—next we have Rie Matsumoto.
Rie Matsumoto is a director who started at Toei, animating and directing episodes of Heartcatch Precure. (If you don’t know what Precure is, it’s basically My Little Pony, but magical girls and Japanese. That’s the kind of fandom it has. Maybe a little less bad, but not the point.) At Toei, she directed the original promotional video for this series called Kyousougiga, which became a web series and eventually a 10-episode TV series. Then she went AWOL for a few years, later reappearing at Studio BONES directing Blood Blockade Battlefront. (She’s also really cute, I think. [Audience member: It’s true.])
Matsumoto’s another one of those creators with a strong storytelling stamp as well; she has a hand in writing a lot of these works. She as a creator is eclectic as hell. Kyousougiga is like a dozen shows in one, about nostalgia and regret and salvation through platonic love and depression and narcissism—it’s great. Some of the themes that reappear across her work, especially in this original part of Blood Blockade Battlefront, are family bonds, salvation through familial love. In Blood Blockade Battlefront she basically added an entire subplot that was about two siblings reconciling with each other, because that was [the story she wanted to tell]. That’s not even in the manga at all.
For Blood Blockade Battlefront, the artist of the manga [Yasuhiro Nightow] had only one request to the anime staff, and that was to make an opening sequence worth seeing a hundred times. That’s a pretty daunting task, but Rie Matsumoto was like, “heck, I’ll do it.” I’ll let you decide whether she succeeds or not.
[Kekkai Sensen OP]
Every frame of that thing has so much, the composition’s superb. Matsumoto is not directing the second season, unfortunately; she says she’s told the story she wanted to tell and no longer has interest in telling more. Someone else will be taking charge of that second season!
Here’s Soubi Yamamoto, another one of my favorites. No relation to Sayo Yamamoto. Soubi Yamamoto is unique in that she’s basically entirely independent. Most of her work she wrote, directed, and animated almost all by herself—kind of like Makoto Shinkai, director of the current hit Your Name, as well as Five Centimeters Per Second, Garden of Words, if you’ve seen those.
Yamamoto’s really young. Her This Boy series: This Boy Can Fight Aliens, This Boy Caught a Merman, This Boy Suffers from Crystallization, and This Boy is a Professional Wizard. They’re all standalone, thirty-minute shorts. She made the first one of those when she was 22. (She’s like, 27 now. Really young.)
Characteristics of her style: When you see a Soubi Yamamoto thing, you know it’s Soubi Yamamoto. It’s got a saturated color palette, limited animation (since it’s basically just her), on-screen text and manga-like textures/aesthetic. She also has a pretty large hand in writing most of her shorts. You see themes of loneliness, isolation, the difficulty of maintaining interpersonal connection—and boys kissing, there’s quite a bit of that too. What she did not write was MEGANEBU, her one and only TV series to date. This is about a bunch of guys in a glasses enthusiastic club. It’s about as dumb as it sounds. In this scene one of the characters is trying to go to club and is sidetracked by a praying mantis.
[Meganebu, episode 5 - about 3:00-4:30]
The rest of the episode escalates from there—he brings out a suit of armor and a flamethrower just to get past this bug. It’s pretty great.
Atsuko Ishizuka. She was the first [female] staff director at Studio Madhouse. In 2008, the head of Madhouse Masao Maruyama said of her that she was probably the most talented young director in the industry at the time. She’s managed to get a foothold in the otaku market with No Game No Life and several other reasonably successful properties.
She’s also very fond of very, very bold color design. Personally I think she goes a little overboard with it most of the time, but in this 2009 show Aoi Bungaku I think she handled it well. This show is an anthology of adaptations of Japanese literature. Ishizuka directed episodes 11 and 12, “The Spider’s Thread” and “Hell Screen,” both based on short stories by Ryuunosuke Akutagawa. (Has anyone seen Bungo Stray Dogs? Yeah, it’s that guy. He’s actually a real person.) Hell Screen is about a painter who’s commissioned to decorate the tomb of an emperor with his glory, but when he’s faced with the suffering and strife that’s going on in the country he paints a picture of suffering instead. This is the scene where he finally breaks when his daughter is burned before his eyes. [Its exquisite use of color] is really gorgeous; y’all should watch it.
[Aoi Bungaku, episode 12. No link, sorrymasen.]
Aoi Bungaku has unfortunately never been licensed because the market for adaptations of Japanese modernist literature is kind of small. (Its audience is me, mostly.)
Moving on, we have Eunyoung Choi. Choi is a longtime collaborator with avant-garde director Masaaki Yuasa. If you’ve seen Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong, Kick-Heart (which aired on Toonami a while ago, I think)... they also did an episode of Adventure Time together. Most of Eunyoung Choi’s work has been with Yuasa, so you see their styles kind of merge, with loose lineart, flexible animation, favoring dynamic motion over consistent character models. She did direct the ninth episode of Space Dandy herself (Yuasa came later in the second season with the fish alien episode). This is the episode where Space Dandy and the crew go to a planet where all the living things are plants.
Interesting to note that Choi is Korean, and not Japanese; if you look at the edges of the industry, with the ‘artsy’ projects, you can see a bunch of non-Japanese people. Kevin Aymeric, French background artist; Michael Arias, a director from America; Thomas Romain, French mech designer; Bahi JD, Austrian animator; a lot of them work on the same projects because they’re all buddy-buddy with each other.
So she’s directed this lovely but trippy episode of Space Dandy. [It’s a unique style on display here.]
[Space Dandy, episode 9, about 15:30-17:30]
That was Eunyoung Choi. Here’s another lady: Ai Yoshimura, who directed Oregairu, Blue Spring Ride, Dance with Devils, and Cheer Boys. She’s pretty good at handling moments of intense emotion: in Blue Spring Ride there are so many scenes where you can just feel the atmosphere dripping with romantic tension. (Sometimes it’s bad.) But my personal favorite thing of hers is Dance with Devils, which is basically an anime Broadway musical about a girl and demon boys. This show had the brilliant idea of making Cerberus a mashpotato dog. And he has a musical number. You guys should see it ‘cause I love this show to death.
[Dance with Devils - Loewen]
This show also has wonderful numbers like an extremely wannabe rap and a song called “Emo Liar.” It’s “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” but with anime boys and more screaming. Anyway, that show is great and I feel like everyone should watch it, but that’s just me.
I feel like I should mention the most prolific director in the entire industry, [Chiaki Kon]. I don’t think this is even a complete list of her work. Here I have Golden Time and Sailor Moon Crystal. Season 3, since the first two were directed by someone else. She, uh, sure does put out a lot of work. Not a lot of it’s very good, but there sure is a lot of it! Props to her for getting so many jobs. I mean, as much as I love Nodame Cantabile, those two seasons are not good. Also Junjou Romantica. I’m not gonna say anything about Junjou Romantica, but… Junjou Romantica.
Literally everyone else: I of course did not have time to get to everyone. A couple of names I like on here:
Noriko Takao directing Saint Young Men, which is about Jesus and Buddha chilling in an apartment in Tokyo, and it’s pretty great. That will probably never get released over here because fundies.
Kotomi Deai directing the second season of Silver Spoon and the fifth season of Natsume Yuujinchou. She took over Silver Spoon from SAO director Tomohiko Ito, who was currently then busy with SAO.
Sayo Aoi directing The Merman In My Bathtub. See, there are actually two gay merman anime. I just think that’s incredible.
I also really like [Mitsuko Kase’s] Ristorante Paradiso. It’s the kind of show you watch if you’re really into older men. Like, if you want to sit back after work, chill and watch reasonably attractive older men do their thing, that’s the show for you.
(I have seen basically everything on this list. Some of it’s pretty bad. Some is actually decent. Not [Yukina Hiiro’s] Chu-bra. Nnngh, we don’t talk about Chu-bra.)
The anime industry today is obviously changing. There’s more anime produced now than ever before; we have dozens of new shows every three months. Go back a few decades, we had a dozen new shows a year. With that boom, the women’s share of the market is definitely growing. You see this with a lot more anime directed at women: the idol shows; the sports anime,which are intended for younger boys but have a significant female following anyway (hot guys); Touken Ranbu, which is more of a thing over in Japan than here; Osomatsu. With that, we have more female-led projects than ever before.
Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. The wages in the industry are terrible. Animation is a really hard job! It takes a lot of skill, and they get paid almost nothing for it. Also, the industry is kind of a boys’ club and has been since the beginning. On the bright side, a lot of these women are really young and will probably do good work in the future, so I’m gonna beg you guys to support them by watching through legal channels. (I’m shilling for good friends at Crunchyroll.)
I then went through a few resources and places to watch the good cartoons, concluding with the same two Animator Expo shorts from before the panel for the people who showed up later. Thanks for playing!
Morose Mononokean 3 – 13 (FINAL) | Nanbaka 19 | ACCA 5...and anime from 2016, ranked.
(Morose Mononokean ep 3)
LOL, the kaomoji scroll.
Hopefully your handwriting won’t be illegible, Fusshi.
The Japanese place a lot of emphasis on independence, hence th errand running comment.
It’s so threatening to get pointed at with a stick.
I didn’t quite get the “five years again?” joke, but the jokes were going pretty rapid fire there. I might’ve just missed one and that’s OK. *shrugs*
Technically Ashiya lied when he said “you don’t have to believe me” because she believed him in the end…kinda sorta…?
Oh, to grandstand means to be showy. I don’t think I solidified that into my brain until just then.
Are those weeds or onions?
…Oops, not onions at all. Close enough (since they’re blub plants), though.
Where’s your dad, Ashiya?
Zenko’s not crying, you’re crying, I’m crying. Everyone’s crying!
…Oh, that’s the punchline of the joke…but Abeno’s scary when he’s really angry.
(ep 4)
I think even lil’ Fuzzy nods in the OP near the end.
The d and b thumbs are very inventive in regards to kaomoji. I like inventiveness.
Exhibit A of how Comic Sans ruins a mood, CR subbers.
So that’s Abeno’s writing (and not Comic Sans)?
Ashiya and Abeno have really creepy eyes on the eyecatch.
Shizuku means “water droplet” IIRC.
Ashiya, Super Sentai!...or something like that.
The Fuzzy Ashiya knows has 3 tails. This one only has one.
Ashiya, getting coerced into deals he can’t handle. *sigh*
(ep 5)
Fuzzy’s basically a Pokémon now.
What happened to Abeno’s jar?
Where I am, there’s three arms to the government: the legislative arm, the judicial arm and the executive arm. This show must run off a lot of the same principles.
Fuzzy seems vaguely unimpressed when Ashiya learns he doesn’t have to die.
How is that communicating with a fuzzball? Sad life for Abeno-san.
The sad thing about Abeno is that he’s very grumpy. While that does make him basically a male tsundere, his grumpiness isn’t something everyone can live with. Rippou (Legislator) included.
(ep 6)
The Ring? Like a horror movie? (This is the last of the Mononokean episodes I’ve seen before, so it’s not a horror movie, but I had to make the joke while I was at it.)
Fuzzy looks like an offering to the ancestors there on that cushion.
The Mononokean went “If you’d followed my instructions [yada yada yada] but…” Note the “but” – that wasn’t in the translation.
Where does Abeno sleep?
Fuzzy wrapped up is like a fuzzy sushi roll. I wouldn’t like to eat a fuzzy sushi roll, though.
Edo = old Tokyo…so are all Edoites (or whatever you call them) meant to be non-honorific users?
Manjiro must’ve been easy to draw if this were in the source material. However, since this is obviously a CGI Manjiro, it must’ve been easier to animate than, say, Fuzzy. (Apparently fur is hard to get right in CGI.)
“15 whole minutes”…hardly anything impressive…LOL.
Ashiya will never give you up, he’ll never let you down, he’ll never run around and desert you…
Even Fuzzy’s sweating up a storm just thinking about how to return the ring.
Ow. Getting headbutted by an eel is not the way to go.
The salve on Fuzzy looked like a box for a frame or two.
The irony of an eel shop with an eel youkai…
(ep 7)
It’s fresh impressions from here on out.
Butterflies don’t fly like that…
Since middle school is years 7 – 9…okay…Ashiya is that childish? *laughs awkwardly*
I just realised this show doesn’t do flashbacks very well.
I saw a grave in the back that said “Abe Family Grave”. It’s not the kanji for Abeno, though.
Don’t be so proud of your status as a hide and seek veteran, Ashiya.
“Yoko” is the word for a fox spirit. it’s why, in Tactics, the fox spirit is called Youko. Even I knew that much and Ashiya didn’t, LOL.
Oh right! Abeno calls Fuzzy “hairball”.
Abeno is 15?! I’m absolutely positively flipping out!...Abeno and Ashiya look like they’re 17!
(ep 8)
I thought something was up with the subs. Turns out “Haruitsuki” was spelt wrong.
Remember “–sama” is of more respect than “–san”.
I think Mr Chips from Eldlive was like this critter. Gets drunk on green tea.
Tsundere flying green youkai. That’s probably better than an annoying, possibly tsundere fairy (<- reference to One Wish They Never Wanted).
Benkei? I’ve never heard anyone yell “Benkei!” when they stubbed their toe. I get that it’s Standing Benkei though.
Aww. Even if it’s a youkai proposal, it’s so sweet…
(ep 9)
How do you spell “dispirited”? Two Ss? One?
Dangit, Ashiya would do well in job interviews…
The eyecatches always look unnecessarily dramatic, don’t they?
Does Abeno’s question about amateurs include Ashiya?
Abeno must’ve gotten a “Don’t come near my daughter again!” sort of thing a lot.
Fuzzy’s body went “boomph!” when he jumped on to Ashiya’s shoulder.
Fuzzy absolutely fails at rolling on balls, LOL.
(ep 10)
Why did I think of “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” when it came to large!Yahiko?
The title of this episode is “deku”, like Boku no Hero Academia Deku.
Rakugan.
How did the eyecatch manage to put shojo sparkles on Nobou and turn him into something that’s vaguely appealing (in a handsome sense)? It must be the magic of the shojo sparkles…Also, henohenomoheji scarecrow.
“Phantasmagoria” aka “fantasy” or “illusion”.
Wow, basically this show is an ethics lesson…
Who knew a mutant scarecrow could cause such a heartfelt story? Also, please stop hitting yourself with a potato.
(ep 11)
I don’t think I’ve seen the character for “purple” being read as shi before.
Stop using Fuzzy as a shield for your words, Ashiya.
Fuzzy jumped on to Zenko’s head. It’s kinda funny to see Fuzzy acting like a Swablu.
Fuzzy with a leaf hat is aesthetically pleasing. It soothes the soul. (Uh, hey. Come to think of it, Mononokean’s a lot like the works I’ve done on Honeyfeed, eh? Light comedy and a lotta drama.)
I keep stumbling upon spoilers for shows I’m not caught up on, this show included. So I technically knew about Yahiko and never mentioned it, and I’m going “oh no” here because I know what will happen to Ashiya…
Tomori. That was the name from the spoilers…oh no!!!
Fuzzy looks particularly round in the eyecatch.
Apparently Ashiya began as a doodle in the margin of Kiri Wazawa’s sketchbook, but he became the protag of Morose Mononokean. That’s the ultimate upgrade in life for a character, eh?
Abeno’s logic…I get it, but I guess it was played for hilarity. Well, it worked. Really well.
A 9-11. I thought it was funny at first, but now it’s scary and solemn.
Simultaneous equations? I want nothing to do with them anymore.
Come to think of it, Aoi may have been a woman due to the woman’s cloak.
(ep 12)
Oh? A sister? I’ve haven’t seen her in the show yet. I wanna see her.
One of the lil’ pine cones is sleeping. It’s strangely adorable.
(ep 13)
Yahiko’s so spoilt by Zenko.
*squints at Ashiya’s book* Oh hey. I haven’t done this in years! Yeah, that sort of stuff is “first year of high school” stuff, but speaking from experience as an advanced maths student, I have a skewed perspective of what “normal maths” is for a year level. Add that to the fact Japan has the idea that they have to push their geniuses to the limit by being ahead of their years (sometimes going up to one year ahead of the “usual” standard) and…yeah.
From the lip reading, the word could’ve been tera (Buddhist temple) or jinja (Shinto shrine). Knowing how Zenko is built off the ideas of Buddhism anyway, it’s tera.
Well, out of sight, out of mind, as they say.
Abeno looks like such a bad boy in that eyecatch, it’s hilarious.
Seriously, how does Nobou talk with no mouth?!
I thought the hand was Yahiko. Turns out it was Abeno.
Fuzzy looks downright ill when Ashiya’s scared.
A boss normally doesn’t bow his head to his subordinates, let alone call them “lord” (dono), which is the highest type of honorific one can give to a person.
See, the kaomoji scroll really is fun. If someone could make one for me, I’d love to play with it for a little bit. Maybe you could make a (computer?) program that could function mostly the same way…huh. That’s a good idea, actually.
Notice the Mononokean uses “watashi”. I guess it doesn’t have much of a gender anyway.
Nice hat, Ashiya. (LOL.)
Welp, that’s the final episode of all my 2016 anime. I moved the top 10 anime of 2016 to the bottom of this post for the surprise factor, but knowing my reactions to the anime means you can’t be too surprised by the results.
(Nanbaka 19)
Honey’s still on arrow mode.
The scream. It’s like a horror movie, but so funny because it overlays the OP.
The sparkles actually helped viewers see something for once.
Rokuriki. So that’s the guard’s name. It has “six” in it.
Deer hook swords. I’m not quite familiar with them but they look cool.
I only just realised, but they left Nico behind in the supervisor’s office.
The rubble is so beautifully rendered.
What was Jyugo doing behind the pots? Something for humour, I suppose, because I laughed.
“Hachiman” can mean 80000.
Kawaisouni… translates to “unfortunate” or “how unfortunate” but I probably wouldn’t peg it as “poor baby!” like the subbers did. It’s probably the tone Uno used that caused them to sub it the way they did.
Here we go again with this Jyugo comeback from episode 1…
It’s around the part where Upa’s trash talking Hachiman that you can identify Upa’s VA is Yuu Kobayashi (SGRS’s Konatsu’s VA). Even Nico is voiced by a dude and yet Upa is not.
(ACCA 5)
Seriously, this blue haired guy (Magie) reminds me of Japan from Hetalia. Must be the haircut.
How does a guy not remember toast? Probably because this is of Japanese origin, where rice and fish are more common than bread.
I still think his name should be Gene Otus.
CGI fits flawlessly into this style, and if you’ve been around these parts long enough, you know I don’t like obvious CGI.
Dowa Travel.
Hotel Akevitt. They have some weird names in this show.
Reindeer…? I’m not very good at identifying deer vs reindeer.
I heard you like wheat bread, so I put some wheat bread in ACCA to keep you happy, Jean. (insert more memes about wheat bread here)
Lotta really likes walnuts, eh?
Crow/Nino’s a free agent hired by Grossular, right?
Ah. I get it. Lotta’ll keep an eye on Nino for Jean.
Isn’t a sandpiper a bird?
Oh. So that’s why Grossular has such long hair.
Lilium’s bro? Gotta remember him for later.
Grossular’s an older Kyosuke Kuga, LOL.
 Anime of 2016, Ranked
Since I have 17 entries this year and it took a lot of shuffling to get right, I’ve decided to show my entire 2016 rankings. Only shows I saw in their entirety at least once over in 2016 (with the exceptions of D Gray Man Hallow and Morose Mononokean, which are applicable through the simulcast commentary process but were only watched to episode 6 before 2016′s end, and fall anime, which due to being AFK at 2016′s end were unfinshable until 2017), and had at least one new seasonal entry in 2016, apply:
17. Prince of Stride Alternative
16. Mr Osomatsu s2
15. D Gray Man Hallow
14. Kiznaiver
13. Morose Mononokean
12. Nanbaka s1: can’t talk about this yet because its s2’s not finished!
11. Classicaloid s1: can’t talk about this yet because it′s not finished!
10. Flip Flappers: The art style and fight scenes really make this a show worth watching. However, it did get somewhat confusing at the end so that’s where most of the drop in the rankings comes from.
9. ReLIFE: While the themes were pertinent and the art style on point, it was a bit plain and there wasn’t much of an explanation as to why the pills work (even if that isn’t Yoake or An’s role). I guess I’m still used to it living in the shadow of Detective Conan, after all.
8. Boueibu s2: This was a step up from s1, but unfortunately there were prime contenders this year that knocked it out of higher places. Also the fact that it does seem more rushed than s1 due to the time constraints does give it a bit of a toll.
7. Bungou Stray Dogs (overall): 2 seasons makes this show stand out as a strong one, especially near the end when it really hits its stride. The fact light novel stories took up up to 4 episodes did make me worried, but the fans definitely have more than enough material to work with as a result, right?
6. Yuri on Ice: I don’t mind the off model in this one if it means the good stuff can come with it, but the fandom is quite intimidating and it was a “show of the year” in ways some people now consider to be a negative thing, so it did suffer a bit from that. I give it merit for the things it does well, but it’s not the saviour of anime the talk of the town can make it out to be.
5. Boku Dake ga Inai Machi: Stunning visuals, a Sayuri ED and good thrills with well executed cliffhangers. My only gripe with this one was the very end, but you’ll have to see the relevant posts for why that is.
4. Boku no Hero Academia s1: Even if it is repetitive, it rises above (Plus Ultra!) to become something more than just a fusion of East and West like I always try to strive for. It’s an emblem and it’s definitely something Horikoshi should be proud of after what happened to Barrage and Oumagadoki Zoo.
3. Sakamoto Desu Ga: This show also managed to go above its repetitive trappings with inventiveness and humour. The fact it’s also touching at exactly the right points shows you why Takamatsu is one of my favourite directors.
2. ConRevo s2: Colourful and politically striking as always, ConRevo was one of the shows I always looked forward to watching, even if it meant staying up past midnight to document things on the wiki. Even if I’m not that fond of the Urobuchi episode, this show managed to reach awesome highs without losing the fans it got from s1.
1. SGRS: With a soundtrack that brings you to the past, humour that can make you laugh no matter how many times you watch it and visuals to wow even the most serious of artists, you can tell SGRS is a labour of love in every aspect. Its second season has already surpassed its predecessor in only 4 or 5 episodes, so...only time will tell whether anything can challenge SGRS for the throne.
 Total:
winter 4
spring 5 (incl. Bungou Stray Dogs s1)
summer 4
fall 5 (incl. Bungou Stray Dogs s2)
