thank you!!!! they are my most self indulgent au but also definitely the one i tend to keep most to myself. i want to tell their story so bad but i’m not skilled enough of a writer even though i really want to write it anyway 😭😭 i will try my best to explain some of my thoughts though!!

as you can see from the tags that this is a ng+ role swap au! the basic premise is that akira gets sent back three years into the past and prevents goro from entering the metaverse, accidentally assuming goro’s original role instead in the unjust game.

for most of the story, you are just following goro akechi after he got sent to tokyo on probation (for ACTUALLY assaulting shido on that day btw) and things seem to go like any other role swap au!

goro arrives at leblanc and meets sojiro, wakaba and futaba (wait a minute…) before he starts attending shujin academy.

his criminal record still gets leaked but at least his homeroom teacher seems to be trying to help him (hold on a minute…) despite being so late on his first day.

he even runs into the detective guy from the shibuya station earlier at his new school with two sisters! one of them seems to also be a transfer student just like him (something doesnt seem right huh).

so maybe things are a little different after all!! akira made a lot of changes in those three years. 🤭

i’m still working out a lot of the details especially later in the story, as well as decision on whether or not i want to completely rework some parts. i definitely need to figure out exactly what akira would change and how they will affect everything else though. i also need to design new metaverse outfits for goro and sumire (kasumi’s is being refined atm and akira’s white mask fit is already done).

re: kasumi, she is joker’s sort of accomplice in this au!! she knows that he is behind the mental shutdown and kind of blackmails him into letting her join him. she doesn’t do any of the actual mental shutdowns (akira refuses to let her no matter what) and instead just keeps akira out of life threatening danger as his back up.

oh and before i forget, this is an au with the “joker has a palace” tag attached. 🥰the phantom thieves visit his cathedral instead of maruki’s lab after the new year.

(apologies for going on rants about it but i have so many thoughts lmao) been looking at the asks and stuff for the palace au and i am. so ill over it already. joker palace aus grab my brain and shake it around so much bc of how it can be played out with how yeah joker's the leader, but with a group where he helped shoulder all their problems and doubts on top of having to destroy a reality where all his friends could have everything and the true reality where he couldn't save a genuine life, it's so???? you think about how they're all teenagers and how much that is so have on one person's shoulders who probably built up a complex of being unable to truly confide in anyone

and giving a deadline is so unique bc i don't think ive seen a palace au with a full deadline. plus there's smthn so like,,, horrifying about being given a deadline for this case?? because it's not just like a deadline until something very bad happens like being arrested or expelled. it's literally a deadline counting down days until someone dies. it's a deadline ticking down until you're too late to save someone from themself and the personification of doubt, grief, anger, blame, and probably hate wearing their face. having to fight so much harder because you missed fighting at the start and the longer it's left to fester the stronger you'll have to be to even have a hope to make up the time difference.

YEAH IKR!!! honestly ive seen many fics with the concept already but it's still sooo interesting to think about and has so much potential so i wanted to give it a try too and now it's living in my head rent free i LOVE the headcanon that akira feels like he has to shoulder everyone's burdens while not being a burden to his friends himself - he has to be the strong leader, he's the one supposed to help them, and that's why in the fic the phantom thieves can't access his palace, except for akechi - the one person akira wasn't able to help. there's so many negative emotions bottled up inside akira and his shadow truly is the worst version of himself - and he's able to manipulate akira into thinking staying in the palace forever (aka: letting himself get killed by his shadow) is the best solution; even when akechi finally finds him, akira refuses to believe he's real and isn't willing to leave the palace. in most fics i've read akechi was the unhinged one and akira helped him getting better, so i really wanted to reverse the roles here: akechi has more or less moved on from everything that happened and got his shit together, while akira is literally going insane. akira can be a little messed up, as a treat!!!

This Makoto was raised strictly by an aunt after the death of her parents, and has since been kicked out of her home. So, she's reuniting with her older sister, who was kicked out for the same reason many years before. Makoto, during her time in Inaba, experiences what being a teenager is all about. She's only got that final year, but even mysterious murders won't keep her from truly living

Ft no rizz Makoto showing up and having every girl just. Fall for her. Epitome of autism swag meme thing. Has a polyquad in it

0 - Fool Makoto (Doomed Toxic Yuri Swap)

After being arrested for something she didn't do, Makoto is sent to live with her older sister in Tokyo while on parole. She intends to keep her head down so she can get into a good school still, but she can't douse the flames of righteous rage in her heart when she encounters injustice. That anger of hers is what landed her in Tokyo, and it'll be the spark that begins a rebellion in those around her

This one has Justice Haru. And they're in a doomed toxic Yuri. For those who need more than fluff in their lives

3 - Empress Makoto (ACAB swap)

Daughter of the police commissioner, Makoto has her whole future pre-determined for her. Her father has been changing, and won't listen to her about not wanting to follow in his footsteps. She wants to be a mechanic, but... If only she had a way to return home to the man she once knew...

In her confidant, she'd be dealing with grief, but also, reuniting with Devil Sae, and trying to fix her future, get out of the school her father set her up for, and into the courses she wants herself

4 - Emperor Makoto (Gender Thieves)

Second palace is Kobayakawa in this. Makoto is his perfect attack dog, kept under his thumb by promise of scholarships and recommendations. The others make Makoto see that she's being strung along, and she breaks free. And, mega rebels. Rebels so hard they throw out their gender. They/he Makoto. Grunge Makoto

Ft trans boy Haru, and MakoHaru are together from the start in this. A soft prep boyfriend who's scary with a bat and his grunge gruff partner who's scared of the dark

6 - Lovers Makoto (Morg Swap)

She graduated early, finished teachers college, and is doing her one year placement at a middle school. The principal is using blackmail to keep her complicit and silent, making her forget the reason she was so passionate about teaching in the first place

7 - Chariot Makoto (Chaos Swap)

A classic. In an attempt to stand up against Kamoshida and his abuse, Makoto got beat up, and framed for using physical force to get better grades. An outcast and feared by her peers, this is a punk Makoto all the way. If given the chance, she'd risk it all to save the other students, even after all they've done to her.

This one was my first one it's my favourite. It's also mostly silly goofy so

8 - Justice Makoto (Blood Moon Swap)

The darkest of these. Young, Makoto's mother dies. Her father, never in her life before, appears and informs her it was her fault, and demands she make up for it, following his orders, his little psychic assassin. She's filled with anger; at herself, her actions, her father, at those she's told to dispose of. She shakes with rage, a need to tear down everything around her, make everyone else feel how shitty her life was. Her public appearances as a junior detective are firm, and serious. Proper.

Plot includes the discovery that the Fool, Goro, and Makoto were twins. Separated after the death of their mother. A "what if", since in Makoto's arc they were sort of parallels almost?

9 - Hermit Makoto (Polygirls Swap)

This Makoto watched her parents die. A Good cop, an EMT, trying to help someone, when suddenly they, changed, and walked off of a bridge. She's believed it had something to do with her for a long time, but after she's saved from her own distorted heart, she comes to the conclusion that the "Black Mask" had them killed for planning to report a superior for taking bribes from Shido

This is the Fool Ann and Emperor Haru au where the three are gay and together and gay.

12 - Hanged Man Makoto (Age Swap Au)

Makoto, a former soldier, runs a seedy shop in Shibuya to afford her younger sister Sae's hockey fees. She's still carrying the mental and physical scars from her time in service, but will do anything for her younger sister, even if it means letting the cops do whatever to her so she won't get arrested again

This is adult confidant Thieves, so the main cast of this au are the adults, like Sojiro and Sae and Iwai. The Niijima sisters get along a bit better here

19 - Sun Makoto (Yaoi Swap) {I hate that name}

This. This is just an au where literally they're all guys and theys. Whether it's trans guys, NB, CIS, or demi, they're. All guys. So this is a guy Makoto, captain of the debate team at Shujin, who offers the fool speech lessons in exchange for understanding people better. Makoto wants people to stop being scared of him, and wants to stop fearing people at the same time

- Faith Makoto (Uh. I don't have a name for this one)

hi kaia i will probably ramble more about this to you if i decide to do anything more with it

so basically. < attempting to keep some air of suspense even though I've definitely told you what akiras deal here is at some point

to an outside observer akira in this au would seem kind of similar to canon. (he's even still called joker because mona doesn't know he's a wildcard when he calls him that.) he only has access to his own personas like a normal person though. obvious stuff. he does, however, seem to pick up on the metaverse almost unnaturally quickly, be pretty good at most things, and have a weird knack for finding people in need of help. nothing too obviously suspicious that can't be brushed off until mona (who still lives with akira because. do not seperate them) says he thinks Akira's been investigating a whole ass palace without saying anything, and then okay maybe there's some questions about how he got into the palace of a girl he's not supposed to know exists. (akira manages to dodge the questions anyway, for a while. he's just like that)

so yeah, akira in this au: definitely having a normal and regular one and doesn't know anything he shouldn't don't worry about it 👍

the address leads to an apartment complex and Makoto lives on the very top floor. she's basically barricaded in and the state of her apartment probably violates every single health code

her rent/bills were set to auto-pay but the money's running out

they find out the auto-pay was set up by Sae before she died while out on a mission

MAKOTO'S OWN PALACE TIME

Makoto's palace is an abandoned lighthouse on a deserted island

the water level is rising and there's a leviathan nearby threatening to kill them

Ok, so: more P5R fic this time, but I've actually run out of Palace AUs for the moment so it's something else I was cooking.

It's a rewrite of the Okumura's Palace "Morgana fallout" scene where Ryuji and Morgana get so heated that Morgana runs away, but instead of making Joker a passive observer who just... watches his team fall apart, I gave him some agency (and anger!) to work with. Disclaimer: Akira is really, really rude to Ryuji in this because he's snapping from months of pent-up anger, but I don't mean for it to last and this is not a Ryuji-bashing fic; they make up later.

"Fine then," and he can feel the moment the temperature plummets, knows that the hard-edged voice which he'd taken so much care to soften has finally reared its head. There's nothing he can do about it, though— the anger wells in cracks and bubbles, impossible to ignore. "Let's go on the merits of usefulness, shall we? In that case, I should simply disband the Phantom Thieves, because I can do everything you can." It's too far. It's way too fucking far. He shouldn't be saying this at all, breaking their trust— how could he disband the only thing holding them together, giving their lives meaning and purpose? But there is nothing he can do to stop the venom spilling out of his mouth, the months of pent-up tension and weariness inflicted on him the moment he stepped into Tokyo. [...] “Where do you get off calling Morgana useless?!” Akira cuts it again, unable to stop himself. It skips across his body merrily, this vein of deep-seated anger, intertwining itself with the erratic thump-thump-thump of his heartbeat. “Is that all the Phantom Thieves are to you? Useful or useless?” That manages to cut through the chaos of the room like a knife. In the deadly still aftermath of his words, Akira derives cold satisfaction the way his teammates flinch back from him. It swells in his heart like that, thick and hazy, erupting into the room like poison gas.

There's something incredibly interesting about Akira teetering on that edge of "why can't I do this by myself?". He is a Wildcard/Trickster with huge adaptability due to his range of Personas, so while it would suck to not have his teammates as a safety net, he is theoretically capable of going through the game (at this level, anyway, not so much early on) solo; that's also a little gameplay-story integration with the Joker Solo runs people do.

This, of course, is also incredibly similar to Akechi's own philosophy around teammates, and part of why they mirror each other in so many ways. Speaking of Akechi, though, this is also fundamentally a shuake fic, so:

Akira runs a hand through his hair, grimacing as it comes away sticky with rainwater. He doesn’t dare look at Akechi while he thinks of a reply— it feels too invasive, meeting the detective’s eyes, as if he’ll see through everything Akira is trying so desperately to hide. “Are you alright, Kurusu? Did something happen?” Damn him. Akechi has always been uncannily perceptive, although any person with a half-decent brain could probably tell he’s going through some shit right now. The way the detective’s voice goes soft around the edges, though, something almost compassionate creeping through… “I’m fine, detective,” he replies curtly, hunching further into himself as he turns away from Akechi’s gaze. That compassion is the same poison in Yusuke’s voice, the one that punctured his heart like bullets. “Shouldn’t you be getting home?” “You don’t look fine,” Akechi bites back, sharper. It’s almost a relief as the concern bleeds away from his voice, replaced with something more disapproving and caustic. “Did someone attack you? Are you hurt?” Fuck. Akira resists the urge to bury his head in his knees and tries to breathe. Every cold breath seems to stab him in the lungs, a tip-tap to the rhythm of the rain soaking him through. ...A shadow falls over him. Akira looks up to see Akechi’s umbrella open over him, the detective’s grip on the handle tight with tension. “You’re going to catch a cold if you stay like this,” Akechi says tonelessly. “You should go home, Kurusu.”

Akira runs away to Kichijoji to avoid confronting his friends after (blowing up at them / punching Ryuji in the face / having a traumatic flashback) all in one. I don't want to spoil the rest of the fic but it's shuake, Akechi finds Akira in a vulnerable state, you can fill in the rest of the blanks (though it's not smut).

Something I will share though is that sometimes it's easier to share your burdens with someone you are strangers with. Akechi isn't exactly a stranger to Akira, but they have a connection that is both incredibly personal and also impersonally strange. They act like acquaintances and then rivals in the confidant progression, but there is a spark of recognition in that relationship that is absent from most others: like recognises like, which is why the Shuake relationship is so interesting to explore. They skip every conceivable normal 'milestone' a normal friendship does but still understand each other on a deep level because of their similar backgrounds and experiences.

Here's a part I'm really proud of, though:

He doesn’t have any defenses or smokescreens left to throw up. All Akira can do is avert his gaze and curl his hands tighter around the mug, uncaring of the way it begins to burn him. What can he say? Sorry, I thought you were arresting me? Akechi sighs, and although Akira can’t see his expression, it sounds utterly defeated. “I would appreciate a truthful answer,” he says evenly, although perhaps only Akira is privy to the tightly-controlled bundle of emotions behind that flat neutrality. “If nothing else, for the sake of not repeating this incident. Don’t take me for a fool, Kurusu. Your actions tonight were highly irregular, and I could already work out an answer based on what you told me.” “Then why don’t you?” “I’d rather hear it from you instead,” Akechi shrugs. There is a storm brewing in his red eyes, though, formidable and piercing. “Don’t you hate it when people just assume things about you without asking for your perspective?”

(quick context: Akira had a traumatic reaction to Akechi trying to haul him to his feet)

This is something they share deeply. Of course, it's obvious with Akira because he is the subject of so many bad 'delinquent' rumours in Shujin, subject to literally everyone who knows about his criminal record assuming things about him before they meet him, up to and including Sojiro. Akechi's is less obvious but just as intense: it's two-fold, coming from both his status as an orphaned bastard child and as a Detective Prince. He accrues the default social reaction of pity or praise respectively due to the assumptions forced on him by society; for an orphan it's helplessness, stupidity, and being unloveable, and as the Detective Prince it's the assumption that he has his life under control with everything handled. In this way they are both people who have had the burden of societal expectations forced upon them.

One last snippet to end this rambling off:

“What’s it to you?” Akira finally manages, averting his gaze. The mug beneath his fingers has finally cooled to a reasonable temperature, once again allowing the chill to spread along his fingertips, ice freezing over slowly in his veins. What is Akira’s deepest weaknesses and insecurities, to Akechi? Why is he sitting in Akechi’s living room at three in the morning, allowing the detective to dissect his psyche? Akechi goes silent. When he speaks, he’s back to the placid TV mask again, his idle fingers and tapping foot curiously still. “I wasn’t aware it was anything, Kurusu-kun. I saw you in trouble, so I helped you. Is there anything more to it than that?” I saw you in trouble, so I helped you. Akira, coming between the drunken man and the woman he was accosting. Watching Ryuji about to be executed by Kamoshida. Akechi has just cited the motive of the Phantom Thieves. Or, well, the motive before the fame and popularity got to their heads. Something dizzying jolts through his chest— is this how they felt? Thinks of Kawakami’s miserable second job, Hifumi’s controlling mother, Chihaya preyed on by a cult. Changing their hearts. Is this how they felt, being helped?

This is so dear to me because I interpret things to see that Akechi is not heartless. He is, obviously, a serial killer and assassin working for a fascist politician/father for his own ends, but that doesn't mean he has completely ditched all his values.

This is where I diverge from canon a bit. After the Akechi Black Mask fight, Futaba says: "but you didn't trust anyone. So you got one [Persona] for your lies, and one for your hate." This implies that Robin Hood stems from the lie of justice within Akechi's own heart and was never genuine— yet in the 'Proof of Justice' OVA in the anime as well as Akechi Rank 5, Akechi is depicted idolising heroes and using a laser gun (his weapon in both Metaverse forms) from a young age, before his mother died. Robin Hood represents the quintessential 'steal from the rich, give to the poor' kind of underdog justice that would fit the Thieves perfectly if he didn't turn out to be traitor, but we're also given hints that this is the original Akechi before he was tainted by the world; his version of 'justice' that was true even if it was simultaneously used as a lie.

Think of it like... method acting. Goro's Robin Hood, and by extension, "I saw you in trouble, so I helped you" justification is an act, because he is putting on a show of a courteous gentleman to fit with his public image. But that act stems from a genuine desire for justice and righteousness in his heart that never quite died.

This is also multiplied 10x by the fact that it's Akira whom Goro is trying to help and they have that aforementioned unique relationship that is impossible for me to define in a single post.

Actually I lied, this is the snippet I want to finish on: I wanted this continuity to carry into Royal's Third Semester so I wrote an extended interaction of their 'reunion' in January.

“I need to know what happened now between then,” Goro asks curtly, done with dancing around the topic. “Did you take down Shido? What happened after?” So Kurusu explains. “Yes, we took down Shido,” in a voice that bears an unmistakable hint of pain. He shelters it well, but it’s still recognisable to Goro’s trained ears— after all, doesn’t it sound awfully familiar to that same wavering tone a soaked Kurusu had used outside of the billiards bar in Kichijoji in November, shrinking away from his touch like it might burn him? The memory slams itself into Goro in a way he doesn’t know what to do with, so he shelves it and listens to the absolutely insane explanation of how Akira shot god on Christmas Day.

Thanks so much for the interest in my fic because god I have so many thoughts to expunge that wouldn't fit in authors notes! I felt like the dynamic really works with them, my favorite movie for my favorite ship <3

cardverse au: ok so in this au uzb is a seamstress for the royal family of clubs. all of a sudden she finds herself between a rock and a tight place as she must spin straw into gold. enter turkey, a joker with no real loyalty to any of the main 4 kingdoms. he offers her help in exchange for something of hers, and helps her get the job done while also making small talk. she slowly finds herself laughing and having fun with this rando, and his occasional visits to her sewing room soon become the highlight of her day. she initially gives him her bracelet, necklace, any jewelry she has...

until she's given the ultimate task of spinning a whole roomful of straw into gold in one day. if she succeeds, she marries the king as his royal consort. if she doesn't she is executed. she hates both of these ideas and is freaking out, especially since she doesn't have anything to give turkey anymore. he helps her anyway, and then goes by the "if you don't have anything left to give, you can pay with your body" philosophy, and essentially asks her to elope with him. she agrees, and when the king opens the door the next day he finds a room full of gold and no royal consort-to-be.

college au: he's the business major to her fashion design major. he tried complaining about his workload once and she dunked on him for that. they regularly go on joyrides together. i was considering making them fiances? if it made the au more interesting...

if we're not going the fiance route, they both have a mutual friend(korea), who sneakily invites both of them to the campus's music and dance event on the basis of korea's club performing kpop dance. uzbekistan is so uncomfortable with the rave music and promises herself she'll stay for korea's performance and leave the moment it's over. she pulls her phone out to record korea and looks to her side and HER CRUSH IS THERE??? HUH??

so they both stare at each other like "what are YOU doing here??" turkey's even more confused since she's the last person he'd expect to show up to a rave and dance performance event. by the time the performance is over, korea pats them both on the back and goes "I'm so glad my 2 best friends showed up to support me!"

korea what a sneaky shipper....

monster high au: turkey's a werewolf(haha turan moment) and she's a werecat. they do NOT get along at first, but slowly their rivalry turns into something like romantic tension as they point tennis balls and laser pointers in each others' faces threatening to use them. next thing you know they're dating??? w,what

also important to mention: kyrgyzstan's an orange cat.

ever after high au: this was briefly considered, but I can see uzb being sort of like ashlynn "oh yea we gotta follow our destinies" and then dates the son of the huntsman(turkey) who is um. Not a royal

snow white au: so this was like a joke. she gets poisoned, he leans in to kiss her and then she immediately wakes up before he does the deed. "ASTAGHFIRULLAH YOU MUST REPENT WHAT WERE YOU ABOUT TO DO"

reverse snow white au: she's the prince, turkey's snow white, and the dwarves? 7 different azerbaijans.

non-country/human au: she gives me boy mom vibes. not like an unhealthy way, but it makes sense that she would have a son(??) also turkey definitely insists on having like 3 more kids.

An angsty new game plus au that made me cry several times, with some palace ruler Joker mixed in for flavor. It's unfinished but still is a satisfying conclusion where it's left off. This fic ripped my heart out, stomped on it, set it on fire and threw it to a lake full of pirahanas and I'm thanking it. There's some akeshu shipping, but it's pretty tame and not really the main focus. Also the chapter names are gold. Also also there's a bunch of P4 references I didn't really understand, but if you've played that game you might like it. On top of that all is some amazing art that's so good I had some of it as my lock screen for months. I pulled 2 all nighters to finish reading this fic as soon as possible and so if you do that and die uh. I am not responsible.

A palace ruler!Joker au that once again stomped on my heart like it was a spider and im still not over it. It's set right between Haru's introduction as Beauty Thief and the actual start of Okumura's palace. It's very fun and Haru breaks a table to get everyone to shut up. I loved every second of this disaster and you will too. This one's the one with minor hints of unrequited Yusuke/Joker so if you're not into that beware, but as someone who's not a big fan of that ship I barely noticed it so don't worry too much.

It may be an elaborate shitpost but this fic has me in a goddamn stranglehold. It's a more Akechi-centric duck soulmate au that has no right to be so good. I'm not a fan of soulmate aus normally but damnit this one broke me. It's the embodiment of crack treated seriously and if you like that then you'll love this, and if you don't give it a shot anyway. Akechi's inner monologue is hilarious and Arsene being terrible at directions is a thing. Arsene is here and he is a disaster.

This one's not really angsty I just think it's funny. Akechi and Joker get into a fake dating competition and become menaces upon society. It's only 2 chapters in out of 5 but I liked it enough to share. If you like slamming your face into a wall wanting to strangle your blorbo because they can't see obvious signs then congrats, this is the one for you. Do beware of the eventual smut tag though.

currently percolating an au idea in my brainicles, though i doubt I'm gonna do anything with it any time soon bc im a busy bitch lmao

the basic idea is persona 5 swap au, but instead of akechi/joker swap it's akechi/futaba swap. more details under the cut (also big huge thanks to my bud @lunagalemaster for enabling me <3)

so this actually spawned bc i have milgram project brainrot rn, and while listening to mu's first audio drama some things about persona 5 clicked. luna mentioned that wakaba being so caring towards futaba despite her being born out of wedlock is actually not the norm, and it's some pretty important cultural context we missed.

naturally, i made a joke that the real akechi foil was the futabas we found along the way...but actually it could work!

in this version, everything up to medjed is the same wrt palaces and such, but shadow madarame doesn't mention the black mask bc black mask doesn't exist. more on that later.

instead, he mentions a hacker that's been exposing and/or threatening people, doxxing them, etc. you guessed it, it's futaba.

she doesn't have leblanc bugged bc she doesn't live with sojiro, she lives with either her (less shitty) relatives or a random foster family, so she doesn't actually know who the pts are.....yet. mishima better hope his website security is beefy as hell, im just saying.

her whole plan is to dig up as much dirt on shido and the conspiracy as she can, then go to him in person, slap the information down on his desk, inform him she's his daughter and that she knows he killed her mom, and then basically blast all that shit all over twitter. she also has a deadman switch set up so that even if he kills her, the info still goes out.

of course, shido knows about her already, because genius or not she's still 15. he just doesn't care bc he thinks he's untouchable.

akechi, on the other hand, is sojiro's ward. he's not a shut-in due to anxiety, but more in a sense of "what's the point?"

he takes online courses, either highschool or college depending on if i wanna accelerate him a bit, so he doesn't see the point in leaving really. it's not like there's anything interesting outside, so why bother?

if you've ever seen either the mekakucity actors anime or the mv for lost time memory from kagerou project, you probably know exactly who im basing him on.

anyway he does have a palace, it's a void of foggy swamp with ruins scattered around, like futabas endless desert in canon. a charon-like figure drifts around the swamp in a little raft, and surprise! that's shadow akechi.

he's only got the one persona since he has no detective prince mask, and that's loki, though ill probably fuck around a bit personality wise. who knows, maybe his persona actually is charon lmao

luna said it adds a new dimension to the black mask/crow persona and i fully agree: depressed, directionless, passively suicidal akechi's first real full force emotion in YEARS? anger. like how futabas was determination and righteous justice, his is anger and spite at how society managed to convince him to drift through the life he fought so hard to have.

3. What is your oc's fatal flaw? Are they aware of this flaw?

So, first, Kieran. For full context, Kieran is originally my partner's oc, but now we both have custody of him <3 And when I mentioned this question to him he immediately said, "Oh, god, just one?" But anyway my answer for this is that Kieran's fatal flaw is love. (not romantic, he is arospec) .He would do anything for the people he cares about, at the risk of literally killing himself. He sees himself as worthless and irredeemable, and values the people he loves more than anything and definitely more than himself. If what that person wants hurts Kieran, he'll do it anyway. He'll do it to the ends of the earth. Part of this is because Kieran is a coward, and he considers that to be his fatal flaw. And to be honest the two are undeniably and inextricably connected. He doesn't want to let himself love. He feels it so much and buries it deep because he doesn't think he deserves it and he's too scared. His brother hates him and Kieran accepts that because he hates himself. He's just a big scared vulnerable feelings guy. :( but. tldr his ass is NOT aware of that flaw, he thinks it's that he's a coward. This love pertains specifically to like... platonic and familial love. His brother, the girl he considers his sister, Stewie, etc. When Kieran actually experiences romantic love he's kind of. chill with it. though that probably has to do with who the guy is tbh ( real quick i have to say now that i am talking about this story with people ((which is super exciting and fun for me!!!)) i need to say. kieran and stewie are not love interests. and in selkies it explicitly states that stewie reminds kieran of his brother evelyn for this reason specifically bc i can see it now. i can see if this ever somehow got published the biggest ship in the place would be kieran and stewie. crying emoji but im on my laptop)

3 for Yuuha:

His biggest flaw is definitely his pride. Yuuha is trans and at his old ballet studio, his instructor didn't acknowledge him as trans, and kept giving him parts that are generally for girls y'know. Often leads bc the instructor was obsessed with Yuuha (is the bad guy of that arc, has a palace, etc) and Yuuha kept taking them every time because he would rather be seen as a girl and be in the spotlight than be on the sidelines. And people used to talk shit about him because of it because he would complain about not being seen as a guy and then take like. idk clara from the nutcracker and people just saw him as a hypocrite. His pride is also what kept him from approaching Hifumi for years after they grew apart. Her success from afar made him feel bad after he quit dance and became a nobody, and he didn't know what she was going through and just assumed that she was too good for him. And he started to kind of believe it. His pride is also what almost gets him killed in the Metaverse, because he gets cocky and runs ahead without the PT. (in black mask au it's his pride that also gets him found out.) But he's extremely aware of this flaw, he just can't overcome it alone. He struggles with it constantly, and it's his Confidant route with Joker that helps him come to terms with it.

9. Do you have a specific lyric or quote you associate with your oc? For Stewie

I had to go through the songs on his playlist real quick but. look. there's a lot of things i associate with stewie but he is, before he is anything else, kindness and love and acceptance. and this is gonna sound so small and stupid and simple but "Everyone you know will lie / those you trust will make you cry / all hellos end with good bye / so who's afraid to love? Not I." it's just. the quintessential feeling at the heart of his character. he's not afraid to love. why yes he is kieran's foil how did you know? sidfjdsf i wrote so much stuff for kieran and yuuha and like. nothing for stewie but like. stewie is full of love. that's his whole him. full of love. like he's still a complex character with other emotions but the things that remind me the most of stewie are his determination to love people who are equally as determined to not be loved. to help people who insist (lying) that they don't want to be helped. to accept those who feel they'll never be accepted.

fully agree that "akira has a palace" and "shadow yu/souji" fics activate the same feral part of my monkey brain lmao, and they often focus on similar ideas as well (lots of joker palace fics will have it be about him putting on facades around people, and i've also seen a couple shadow yu fics where his shadow changes to reflect the person he's talking to). very interesting to see a gameplay feature which is kind of a necessity of the social link system be adapted into a personality trait of the character

there are so many ways in which gameplay mechanics and features can be adapted into fics- and honestly i just really dig it? the vibe of those kinds of fics just really evoke strong memories of playing the games myself, which i love! New Game + AUs / or general timeloop concepts are also some of my favorites... i also like ones that focus on persona usage as well (like personas talking, tapping into character's element affinities and how it manifests, the general exhaustion from awakening a persona/using them, etc.).

So, the Thieves have decided to keep going in the absence of their leader and instate Haru as their new leader. Morgana is about to explain how Haru needs their help with her father and fiance and that they should target Okumura next, but Ann interrupts him with her new problem--in the last few days, she's found herself with a new stalker.

Haru, being Haru, decides to put off her own problems and instead help Ryuji and Ann with the stalker for the time being. The Madarame arc proceeds the same way as it does in canon, more or less, just with Haru as the leader this time. (And less nude modeling, since I can and the stupid joke is barely necessary anyway.)

The fights in the Palace are much more difficult without Joker, and everyone tries to be nice to Haru about it, but her weak Persona is not helping. Her Persona isn't as glaringly weak as it is in the canon timeline, since everyone has weak Personas atm, but it isn't "leveling up" or getting stronger like everyone else's and it's becoming a problem.

They barely defeat Madarame, though, and just like in canon, they hear about the black mask. Unlike in canon, they also hear about his mysterious companion--so mysterious, that Shadow Madarame never even got a good look at him. Akira is the only other metaverse user they know about, but if that's the case, who's the other guy? And Akira doesn't have a black mask…

I wasn't able to get too into this before, but Morgana and Haru own my whole soul in this AU. Imagining an angry and confused Morgana getting picked up by Haru on the street. He's annoyed at first and immediately starts plotting an escape, but then when she starts pampering him with an expensive bed, many cat toys, and top of the line cuisine, he starts to be won over. And Haru immediately grows extremely attached to him and secretly hopes his owners won't come forward so she can keep him--she's just been so lonely and scared recently, and Morgana is the companion she's been so desperate for. She names him Rurikarakusa after a type of blue spring flower for his bright blue eyes. (He tells her his real name asap once she can understand him, but she continues to call him Mona-kusa as a kind of nickname, which he tolerates only with her.)

At some point Haru breaks down in front of Morgana, and believing he's just a normal (if very intelligent) cat who can't understand her, tearfully explains the whole terrible situation with her fiance to him. Morgana is filled with righteous anger and infiltrates Okumura's Palace as soon as he possibly can, she follows him inside, and the rest is history.

(Morgana stays with Haru for the rest of the AU and is supremely spoiled. Finally the little guy gets his sushi--and far too much of it, might I add.)

Chapter 3 - To the Palace

Maxwell and Harley came down for breakfast together the next morning grinning like idiots. Bertrand was sitting at the kitchen table having some tea and biscuits. “So, how was your date last night?” He asked without looking up from his newspaper. Max and Harley looked at each other and shared a smile. 

Maxwell cleared his throat, “Um.. good. It was.. good. Really, really good.” He smacked her ass and she blushed and shrieked.

Bertrand looked between them and shook his head. “You know what? I don't want to know.”

Maxwell laughed, “What? I didn't say anything! I just said it was good!”

“Brother, I know you well enough by now to know what you are insinuating. Honestly, I don't need to know. Whatever you two get up to in your own rooms is none of my business.”

Harley and Maxwell looked at each other again and smirked.

“Right.. Our own rooms..” Harley snickered as she poured herself a bowl of cereal.

Bertrand’s mouth hung open as he looked back and forth between the two of them in horror. “Wait.. what are you saying? Oh my god. Where?! No, don't tell me, I don't want to know.. Oh my god, wait, where?!”

Maxwell feigned innocence, “We just enjoyed a midnight snack in the kitchen last night..”

“Dear god! The kitchen?!” Bertrand grabbed his tea and plate and headed out of the kitchen. His voice was fading as he walked out of the room, but they could still hear him grumbling. “I'll have to call the maid and make sure she comes by today and thoroughly cleans this place… Of all places, the kitchen?!” 

“Wow, so now your brother knows we did it on the kitchen floor last night!” Harley took a bite of cereal.

“He doesn't know it was the floor. How about we mess with him some more and tell him it was on the kitchen table where he was eating?”

Harley chuckled, “You're an evil genius, Maxwell Beaumont.”

“That's why we're the ultimate power couple- Harley Quinn and the Joker. Together we’re an unstoppable menace!” Maxwell kissed her nose and took a bite of her cereal.

The next day, the Beaumonts, plus Harley, received a formal invitation to a Homecoming Ball being held at the Royal Palace in a week. Inside, there was also a handwritten note from Liam.

“Harley and Maxwell,

 I can't wait to see you. We really miss you- Drake included. Please come a few days early so that I can spend some time with my dear friends before the ball. Hana has been planning to make several different desserts and is currently reading a book on how to throw a slumber party. Not sure what to make of that. Anyway, see you soon.

“Aww Liam misses us!” Harley smiled. “Let's go tomorrow! Then we'll have lots of time together before the ball!”

Harley sent a text to Liam, Drake, and Hana to let them know they were coming the next day:

Liam- ‘That is great news. I will make sure the staff prepares your rooms.’

The next day the three of them flew to the Cordonian capital to meet their friends at the palace. Liam had given Hana a job as one of his advisors once Madeleine was out of the picture. She loved it, and felt like she finally had a purpose other than being a puppet for her parents. 

As the Beaumonts exited their car, Hana was there to greet them. “AHH! You're here!” She ran up and hugged Harley and Maxwell. “I know that isn’t a very dignified way to greet someone, but I don't care!”

“We missed you Hana!” Harley hugged her tightly.

“I missed you guys too! Come on, Drake and Liam are inside.”

Harley spotted Liam across the room, and saw the exact moment Bertrand snapped back into ‘Duke Bertand Beaumont’ mode. He bowed, “Your Majesty.”

Liam clapped him on the back, “Bertrand there is no need to be so formal right now. We’re all friends here.”

“Yes Your Majesty.” Bertrand just couldn't stop himself.

Harley giggled, “Hey Liam! I missed you!” She gave him a big hug. “Where's the grumpy marshmallow?”

Drake emerged from around the corner with his arms crossed, wearing his usual denim shirt. “Sup Hughes.”

Maxwell and Harley ran over and hugged him tightly. Drake grumbled, “Ugh.. now you two have joined forces to become an even greater pain in my ass than before.”

“Aww Drake, you know you missed us! Don't lie, Liam already told us!”

Drake gave Liam a look, and Liam smirked at him and shrugged. “Sorry.”

Drake smiled and shook his head. “Fine. I guess I did miss you. It gets boring around here without someone to laugh at.” 

Hana spoke up, “Why don't I show you to your rooms and then we can have dinner together. There's so much we need to catch up on!”

Harley noticed that her and Maxwell's rooms were right next to each other and she made a mental note to sneak into his room later to seduce him. 

Hana sat down on Harley's bed while she unpacked. “So how are you and Max-”

“WE HAD SEX!”

Hana covered her mouth, “Oh my god! When?”

“The night we had our first date!” Harley stifled a scream. “It was amazing. He's so amazing, Hana. Like the way he looks at me, and the things he says.. Oh god, I just feel like I'm in a romance novel sometimes! I know it's so corny to say but.. I’m so fucking happy.”

Hana smiled at her friend. “First of all, I am so happy for you both. You two are perfect for each other. Second of all..” Hana slapped Harley's arm, “why did you wait so long to tell me?!”

Harley laughed, “I'm sorry! I wanted to, but I was waiting to do it in person.”

“Fine.. I guess I'll forgive you.” Hana teased.

“Hana, I need to tell you something but you have to promise not to tell anyone..”

“Of course.”

Harley sighed dreamily. “I'm so in love with him. I thought I had been in love before but it was nothing compared to this. He's the one, Hana.. Like the one. Like get married and have babies and a white picket fence. I want to do all that cheesy shit with him.”

Hana squealed. “Awwwwww! Please tell me I get to be a bridesmaid at your wedding!”

“Don't get ahead of yourself!” Harley said as she continued unpacking. “I may be thinking it, but I doubt Max is! He told me once before that he would never get married.”

“Ya, like way back when you first met. Before he fell in looooove with you!”

Harley laughed, “You're ridiculous. And also, you will not be a bridesmaid. You will definitely be my maid of honor.”

“Yay!” Hana smiled and checked her phone. “Oh, Liam just texted that dinner is ready. After dinner I have a surprise for everyone!”

Once they finished dinner, Bertrand excused himself back to his room. Hana was smiling brightly as she spoke, “Ok I have been reading up on different things to do with your friends and we're going to do something fun tonight! And before anyone asks, yes I did get this from a children's book, but since most of us didn't have a normal childhood, I thought it would be nice to experience this together-”

“Hana.. you're rambling.” Harley laughed.

She cleared her throat and did jazz hands, “SLUMBER PARTY!”

Harley and Maxwell whooped, Drake frowned, and Liam chuckled.

“Soooo?” Hana asked as she shimmied back and forth.

Drake shook his head, “Oh no Hana, you're turning into one of them!” He jerked his thumb over to Max and Harley.

Liam whacked Drake's arm, “That is a great idea Hana. I already asked the staff to prepare the observatory so that we can see the stars while we enjoy the festivities that you have planned.”

Hana frowned, “Wait, you already knew?! It was supposed to be a surprise!”

Liam smirked, “I think it's safe to say that there are few things that happen in the palace that the King doesn't know about.”

“Aww. Well.. the observatory is a good idea. Let's go!”

Once they reached the observatory, they saw that there were tents for each person set up with their favorite snacks and drinks.There were lanterns and fairy lights all around and soft velvet pillows in a circle. “Wow, they really did it up, didn't they?” Harley looked around in surprise.

“Nice!” Maxwell reached out to high-five Drake, which he reluctantly returned.

“Ok this is way better than I could have planned!” Hana was amazed. “But, I made cookies and cupcakes for everyone earlier today and you all have to try them!”

Everyone enjoyed their snacks as they talked into the night. Hana, of course, was an amazing baker. She was amazing at almost everything. 

“So.. What does one do at an adult slumber party?” Liam asked questioningly.

Hana beamed, “Welllll, I was in a bit of a rush, but I asked the staff to google ‘adult slumber parties’ and print me all of the results. We can look at them together and see what we want to do first!”

Hana grabbed the first page and began to read aloud, “Ok, lets see here… ‘discrete pleasure, delivered’? That sounds.. Interesting.”

Everyone looked at each other with a smirk as Hana kept reading. “This just looks like a list of products; Magic wand? Vibrating rabbit? Extra quiet bullet? Sensual dice game? What does this have to do with a slumber party? Dual penetrating ultra realistic dil-” Hanas jaw dropped and she blushed furiously.

Harley couldn't hold in her laughter any more. Everyone else tried to hide it, but they soon had tears running down their cheeks and were laughing hysterically.

“Why does this keep happening to me?” Hana pouted and crossed her arms.

“Oh Hana..” Harley wiped her tears, “You are just too pure for this world! I love you so much!”

Hana tossed the printouts to her with a smile, “Here! You read the rest! I'm done getting picked on!”

Harley laughed and handed the printouts to Drake. “Let the grumpy marshmallow pick something to do. I'm interested to see his idea of fun!”

Drake flipped a few pages over and read aloud.. “Make face masks? No. Pedicures? Hell no. Drink alcohol? Done. Eat snacks? Done. There's not much on here that I'm willing to do.. Pillow fight? Hell no-”

Drake's jaw dropped as he was whacked over the head with a pillow. “What the hell? Liam!?”

“Come on Drake! Show me what you got!” Liam smirked at him as he held a large velvet pillow.

“Oh you're dead, your Majesty!” Drake laughed as he grabbed a pillow and began chasing Liam around the room.

“Oh my god, this is amazing!” Maxwell laughed as he looked at Harley and Hana. “Run.”

They screamed as he chased them around the room. Everyone was hitting each other and feathers were flying.

“I feel like I'm a real kid at a real sleepover!” Hana yelled delightedly. 

“I've been to tons of sleepovers and they were never as fun as this!” Harley laughed and hit her across the head as a shower of feathers rained down.

After a few minutes Maxwell stopped and looked around. “Wait, where's Drake and Liam?’

They stopped laughing as they realized they were nowhere to be found. “Hmm, maybe waiting to ambush us..” Harley crept up to the window of a small connected room filled with several telescopes and gasped softly. “Uh, nope, nevermind!”

Liam and Drake were making out furiously in the dark room. She turned away to give them some privacy and motioned for them to go back to the main room. Max and Hana looked at her knowingly. 

“Isn't it so sad, though? That they have to hide like that?” Harley's heart broke for them.

Hana frowned, “It really is. I mean, obviously some of the staff know.. But they all signed nondisclosures when they started working at the palace, so they know better than to tell anyone.” Hana looked around and whispered, “It's all Constantine.”

Maxwell sighed, “I know. I remember growing up with Drake and Liam, it always seemed like there was something there between them.. I actually walked in on them kissing a few years ago. I'm honestly surprised that Constantine didn’t send Drake back to the States with his mom. I suppose it was the one thing that Liam actually stood up to him for.”

Harley shook her head in frustration, “This is ridiculous! That old fuck isn't the King anymore! He can't control their lives!”

“Shh, Harley! Someone might hear you.” Hana looked around nervously.

Harley decided to keep her mouth shut about it for the rest of the night. She knew Hana was right. Constantine was a horrible person who would stop at nothing to get his way. She didn't want to be in his crosshairs again. 

Drake and Liam finally returned and were both grinning at each other. Harley could see Liam trying to come up with an excuse but she gave them a knowing smile and shook her head. “I know.. It's ok.” She had never seen either of them look so happy.

“Ok!” Drake clapped his hands together, “Where were we?”

They played games, ate snacks, and talked late into the night until they were ready to go to sleep. Everyone went into their own tent, but Harley decided to sneak into Max’s once she thought everyone was asleep. As she crept out of her tent she locked eyes with Drake, who was currently shirtless and sneaking into Liam's tent. His eyes widened in shock. Harley gave him a thumbs up and slipped into Maxwell's tent. She heard Drake chuckle quietly.

The next morning after breakfast, everyone was gathered in a sitting room watching tv. Drake sat up quickly and answered his phone. “Hey!” He looked as if he had seen a ghost. Liam looked at him worriedly and Drake started pacing. “Uh, ya! Of course I want to see you! I've wanted to see you for the past two years!” Drake smiled, “You know Liam wont mind! Tonight?! Ya, that's great! See you then!”

Drake hung up the phone as he stared at Liam in disbelief. “Savannah’s coming back.”

Starting with a list of some of the Arcana

It's Fool Ann, with Magician Yusuke. He's a little Fox in the real world, but Ann gaslights everyone that he's a weird dog named Inari

Ann's Hierophant is Sae, but she's less mother/father figure and more, parole officer. Cause she used to be one, but recently has slowed her life down, after losing her parents and an "incident" with her sister

We've got Chariot Joker, who was the discus thrower for the Shujin Track team, but his wrist was broken before the competition and the team was downsized to just Track, no Field. And Lovers Ryuji, rumoured to be "going for the other side", so. Hes an outcast

Okay rapid fire: Empress Futaba, Priestess Shiho, Justice Hifumi, and Faith Goro

Alright. And, now, for the other gals

Haru is the Emperor. She's a dancer working under a famed choreographer, but in reality Haru choreographs her own routines and gives her mentor credit. Haru wants to discover the ends and limits of the human spirit to show off in her dancing

And Hermit Makoto! She watched her parents die. Her father was a Good Cop, genuinely, a captain who worked for the people, and her mother was a lan assistant for the team looking into cognitive psience. So. They were assassinated. The research was never found, and Makoto watches her big sister slowly give up all she worked for, and, her heart distorts. Her house is a prison, and she's warden and prisoner. But, shes awaiting execution

Ann meets Haru outside a train station. Haru runs into her, and gasps all loud. Ann assumes she hurt her, the boys waiting for her to join them on the way to school, and Haru has fucking hearts in her eyes. She wants to explore this feeling, and asks Ann to dance

In the middle of the street

After they knocked each other over

They go through the palace with the leader thats definitely not Abby from Dance Moms and Haru joins the team. She's tamer with her statements of affection towards Ann, but her social link is all about dancing and not denying herself of feeling, and there would be lots of charged moments of them slow dancing to "feel the connection, Ann-chan!"

They kiss at the summer fireworks. The others are inside the convenience store buying towels, anything to dry off, and Haru dances in the rain. She holds out a hand, and Ann takes it, and they dance and laugh as they get soaked, and, stare into each other's eyes...

Ann: woah,

Haru: indeed, oh my, I don't think I've ever, felt so elated before,

They don't have time to put it in words, because Medjed happens, and Ann receives some texts from a "Justicia". Then, they find out Sae's sister has been living in her basement this whole time, still recovering from watching their parents go off a bridge. She's scared of people, and sounds like a conspiracy theorist, and they decide to steal her heart

They meet two shadow Makoto's in her Palace. Or, rather, her shadow has two forms. The Warden Makoto is her age, resolute in the fact that the government wouldn't have turned on her parents if they hadn't talked about switching careers for Makoto's sake, to be around for her more. Then there's Prisoner Makoto, on "death row".

Prisoner Shadow Makoto is the age she was when her parents died, so like, 12. Small, accepting of her fate, scared. So, so scared.

Anyways she changes her own heart with help, and remembers where the old research was, and talks to Sae about therapy, to get back her life

She helps them with Medjed, first. If she can hack into government databanks to try to find research her mom helped with, she can stop whatever is happening. After that, she falls asleep, holding the "weird dog" Inari, leaning against Ann

Something flutters in her chest. It's the same feeling she got dancing with Haru, but... She's already pretty much in a relationship,

She talks to her Priestess, Shiho, and Shiho admits that sometimes things aren't, cookie cutter perfect. Like, she's already dating a girl, public opinion be damned. Why not add another in?

Ann and Haru talk. About them, and what they want, and, about their new teammate. Who, at that time, is still spending a lot of time recovering from her awakening. They put off adding relationship stress to her plate, but, spend time with her as she gets better

Makoto falls slower, by comparison. She doesn't really know when her heart started to warm up when she'd wake up to one or both of them already in her basement room. But she smiles more, and slowly opens up. Ann feels her heart explode when she walks down the steps after putting away their dinner plates and finding Makoto sleeping already, all leaned against a starstruck Haru

The three work it out before summer ends. Makoto's already graduated from online high school, and Haru and Ann go to different schools, so their afternoons and evenings are precious. Makoto has more reason to push herself in therapy, to be able to go on dates with her beautiful girlfriends

Sleepovers happen a whole lot. Haru lives alone, and Ann is in a shop attic, so, basement sleepovers! The three sharing sleepy kisses, maybe even getting matching pjs. All three are touch starved, so there's a lot of time spent lying around together while doing their own things

A "Zuko never meets the Gaang and suddenly becomes Fire Lord after three years of literal torture" AU. In which the Gaang doesn't know what to think of the new Fire Lord who happens to be the missing nephew of Aang's firebending teacher, Iroh constantly has a headache, and, sure, maybe the world hates the Fire Nation, but the Fire Nation LOVES Zuko, and he can work with that.
