yeah so uh, Shadow Joker eh?

this whole thing started with me thinking about a PhantomThief!Mishima, and then i started drawing stuff based off this one fic i read and then we got to here. oh well

i might turn this into a comic maybe??? depends on how hard finals slaughter me, but I’ll cross that bridge when i get to it

also here’s the lore on this guy cuz i legit spent too much mental energy scraping through the wiki figuring out how shadows and personas work and then coming up with a way it could work for joker

Basically, since someone’s shadow is a manifestation of their distorted desires, then a Shadow Joker, would be the manifestation of the protagonist’s (I’m gonna call him Ren from here on. cool? cool) distorted desires. What might those be? Well, during his awakening, Arsene notes Ren’s strong desire to help people and makes him think about whether the resolve he’s shown in the past was valid or not. This becomes the basis of the rebellious will that allows him to forge a contract with Arsene. But now with Shadow Joker, that desire to help people has been distorted into a kind of mix of hero and savior complex. So instead of just helping people in need, on some subconscious level he has started to see himself as the only one that can help and save people.

In personality he’s about the same as regular Joker. But that’s only at first glance. He’s much more unpredictable and dangerous, basically taking the whole “wildcard” thing very literally. I’d also like to think that all of Joker’s theatrics become even more emphasized with Shadow Joker.

For his palace I was thinking of him seeing the whole of Tokyo as his stage, wherein he’s an actor in a play of which he is the hero. For this I was kinda looking to the “The show’s over” on his all out attack screen, as well as hero = play, play = theatre, theatre = stage, and all that jazz. I’m still not exactly sure on how it’d look; maybe just the city as it is at night with open stages everywhere, spotlights floating through the dark nigh sky both as aesthetic as well as acting as traps for the thieves to avoid, so if you step into one of them the security level goes up. Or maybe each area that they go through would be like a different part of a theatre, so the treasure room would be Shadow Joker’s changing room and the final confrontation would be on a grand stage, idk. One thing is though, I think that his Palace Tokyo would feel really empty. Like there’d be people, but they’ll be more like faceless ghosts kinda milling about, so not at all like the ATM-guys or robots in Kaneshira and Okumura’s palaces. Also probably no cognitive versions of the other thieves or anyone else he knows, as I was thinking that Shadow Joker would be going by an “I don’t need anyone but myself” idea, and since he’s the all-powerful hero he doesn’t need “sidekicks”.

His treasure is his Phantom Thieves mask, as that would be the source of his distorted desire to help, cuz it’s the thing that represents him getting his persona and being able to help people on a larger scale in the first place.

When the other thieves first enter the palace, they won’t be in their thief outfits, as i think Shadow Joker’s desire to help would still outweigh him seeing them as a threat -- plus they’re people he knows. He’d talk and interact with them like regular Joker would, but maybe a bit more openly and with more theatrics, so the other thieves will have some trouble with thinking of him as a legit threat and not just their pal who’s a bit too quirked up. But when Shadow Joker realizes that they’re here to steal his mask, the switch flips completely, and the others have to really scramble to get out with their lives.

Then follows the general infiltration thing and blah blah blah. For the infiltration I thought it’d be neat if they go through all the different districts (that are walkable in-game) and the safe-rooms would be the areas where confidants hang out -- The Untouchable in Shibuya, Crossroads Bar in Shinjuku, Gigolo Arcade in Akihabara, Takemi Medical Clinic in Yongen-Jaya, etc.

There might also be a progression reason for which the gang will have to go into Shinjuku Academy, wherein the safe-rooms would be Ren’s classroom and the roof. Maybe there’s something in the school that they need to clear before they can progress through Aoyama-Itchome and go to Shibuya, idk.

The treasure room would be in the Leblanc attic (because ofc).

For the boss battle, when the other thieves try to steal his treasure but get caught on the way out (cuz that’s what always happens to these fools), Shadow Joker takes the mask from them and actually uses it in the battle, which allows him to switch between a number of different personas as a mechanic. Their levels and attack would be comparatively lower that the thieves’, but the sheer number of skills at his disposal as well as his unpredictability would be trouble enough.

there might also be a phase two, where he rips off the mask he’s wearing and replaces it with his original phantom thieves one, and ends up transforming into a fusion of himself and Arsene, so now he’d be technically using only one persona, but with higher stats

(also i was entertaining the thought of this being the general theme of the palace and this being the theme of the final confrontation. i feel like the first one’s just kinda eerie enough to suit prowling through your friend’s subconscious)

and then pertaining to the design itself, i was basing it off of the regular Joker outfit but spiced up with more flamboyance, because to Ren, Joker would be like the epitome of him feeling like a hero. I kept the mask on to also keep that Joker vibe going, however i made it a more extravagant variation on the original, to kinda push the theatre vibe. I also gave him a cape -- i think that one’s self-explanatory. The walking stick is to give him even more flair, but also uh, concealed weapons is like the perfect Shadow Joker thing to do. Basically think of Lucious Malfoy’s wand-walking stick but with a dagger instead of a wand.

anyway I want it to be clear for the record that I have never once looked up the shadow joker tag on here before i started drawing this but i’m glad we all share the same braincell when it comes to his outfit, fellas

(also holy FUCK @waifujuju‘s Shadow Joker design is so fucking clever, i am in awe)

that PhantomThief!Mishima thing is still in the works by the way, though i’ve hit a roadblock trying to come up with a persona for him. So far i’ve been thinking of something along the lines of Merlin but idk, it doesn’t seem rebellious enough so the only thing that fits is the vibes, and even that’s a maybe. this whole process has also been exacerbated by the fact that i’ve got a really cool costume going for him that involves a bolt-action rifle which i am very fond of and very reluctant to let go off. all this to say, if you’ve got any ideas please shoot me a message or write a comment cuz rn my brain is kinda frying itself trying to think through this. ty

thank you!!!! they are my most self indulgent au but also definitely the one i tend to keep most to myself. i want to tell their story so bad but i’m not skilled enough of a writer even though i really want to write it anyway 😭😭 i will try my best to explain some of my thoughts though!!

as you can see from the tags that this is a ng+ role swap au! the basic premise is that akira gets sent back three years into the past and prevents goro from entering the metaverse, accidentally assuming goro’s original role instead in the unjust game.

for most of the story, you are just following goro akechi after he got sent to tokyo on probation (for ACTUALLY assaulting shido on that day btw) and things seem to go like any other role swap au!

goro arrives at leblanc and meets sojiro, wakaba and futaba (wait a minute…) before he starts attending shujin academy.

his criminal record still gets leaked but at least his homeroom teacher seems to be trying to help him (hold on a minute…) despite being so late on his first day.

he even runs into the detective guy from the shibuya station earlier at his new school with two sisters! one of them seems to also be a transfer student just like him (something doesnt seem right huh).

so maybe things are a little different after all!! akira made a lot of changes in those three years. 🤭

i’m still working out a lot of the details especially later in the story, as well as decision on whether or not i want to completely rework some parts. i definitely need to figure out exactly what akira would change and how they will affect everything else though. i also need to design new metaverse outfits for goro and sumire (kasumi’s is being refined atm and akira’s white mask fit is already done).

re: kasumi, she is joker’s sort of accomplice in this au!! she knows that he is behind the mental shutdown and kind of blackmails him into letting her join him. she doesn’t do any of the actual mental shutdowns (akira refuses to let her no matter what) and instead just keeps akira out of life threatening danger as his back up.

oh and before i forget, this is an au with the “joker has a palace” tag attached. 🥰the phantom thieves visit his cathedral instead of maruki’s lab after the new year.

Woo, Joker Palace AU stuff!

Working on some designs for my Joker palace AU, and I got Mishima done first. Mishima is the ring master of the carnival/haunted house. He's in charge of the place while the palace ruler is resting ( whitch is often now a days ) so he tends to never be in one place long.

This cognition is confident and strong, taking charge and dealing with intruders when needed. Oddly, it seems to act almost completely on its own while most other cognitions work on Joker's orders.

Okay, lore aside. This AU heavily relies on Poly! Joker, Mishima, and Akechi. With Joker heavily relying on Mishima for comfort after the engine room and thus, the cognition has a lot of control in the palace. Joker sees Mishima as confident and strong due to social link events ( standing up to the bully) and other stuff like that.

Gonna be honest, I totally forgot why I made him a spider but I'm keeping it bc I like the design

Persona 5 Joker palace au because i've been mentally ill about it for like years

some environmental concept art !

in my Au joker's palace is a storybook that becomes more corrupted the deeper the phantom thieves go but when they first arrive its a very pretty place

This represents how joker puts on a prefect facade to keep his friends from finding out the truth ( which is that his whole being is a lie and he doesn't have a real personality)

the core reason for this (highkey inspired by @muzzleroars -w-) is little cog yaldy who lives on through joker and whispers his biggest regrets/insecurities in his ear

And is also what causes the 2nd phase of joker's boss fight where the phantom thieves have to fight his distortion

okay so. for people who still remember i had a palace au (stuck in the middle), due to unpopular demand, i finally got around to finishing and editing chapter 4, which is now up on ao3. if people are real niceys to me i might even write more of the fic and post it.

todays chapter: the phantom thieves learn more of what the fucking Deal with this Palace is. akira's friends become increasingly worried about him, even more than before. morgana has some regrets, ryuji has some bad memories.

Hey look at this little bastard man. Here’s my Shadow Joker for my palace au. There’s more information on my verse page but I’m gonna put even more info under the cut.

Ultimately, Shadow Joker is only one part of Ren’s shadow, but it’s the only part that actively seeks out and interacts with any invaders in his palace. He likes to follow the thieves around while they’re exploring, taunting and teasing them. He’s very dramatic and more than a little sadistic, but he never attacks unless attacked first. In fact, nothing in Ren’s palace will attack first. He doesn’t want to hurt his friends, after all.

His treasure manifests as a complete deck of tarot cards, including both major and minor arcana. The minor arcana are scattered around the whole palace, mostly being kept by Ren’s lesser shadows. The major arcana form the halo around Joker’s head. In the real world, the treasure is his diary (aka the game saves lol), because the ultimate source of his desire for a world without control are his experiences in Tokyo and the bonds he formed there.

Over time, his palace starts to sort of leak into reality. The laws of physics start breaking and things start “glitching”. If not stopped, his palace eventually consumes the real world.

His keywords are “Tokyo” and “Show” and his “sin” is “Heresy” (Haeresis).

Some detail close ups

I tried to mix in some elements from Arsene (like the cravat) and a few from Satanael (though those kinda got lost in the design process ha). His outfit is white as representation of the idea of an “inverted” tarot card. He’s constantly bleeding from under his mask mostly because I thought it looked cool.

A little preview of something I'm working on ;) (Akira has a Palace, post-game P5R AU. No, this is not the same scenario I posted about a while ago, so I suppose I will end up with two PalaceRuler!Akira AUs later. Both are shuake, but not relevant to this snippet.)

“Right. I suppose I had better reevaluate my faith in this country’s institutions,” Maruki says, closing his eyes for a brief moment. “I knew, on a surface level, that the Phantom Thieves were correcting injustice in the world; it’s silly, but I suppose it didn’t strike me that injustice would continue, Phantom Thieves or no.” “Yeah,” Akira smirks, mentally positioning himself on the high ground, even though it means nothing, nothing, when four grey walls are the only sight he’s known for months. “People forget that as soon as the fad is over. It’s not like the Phantom Thieves took down a huge percentage of evil, anyway— how many Kamoshidas do you think are still out there now, ones we’ve never heard about?” Maruki’s expression twists, and his eyes darken. “Do you think you didn’t do enough, then?” He takes a moment to think about it. Think about facing the blazing golden light of Yaldabaoth, the last minute faith of the people spurred by the friends he made over the year. How his minute connections amplified into the chain-shattering strength that was Satanael. How easily people fell into the easy temptation of Maruki’s false joy, like that faith meant nothing to them. The tentative trust he’d placed in society, after standing up to god— blown to smithereens by the man sitting before him. “The Phantom Thieves weren’t so much an organisation but a symbol. We did what we came for, so yes, we did enough,” he lies.

preliminary akechi palace au thoughts!

goro akechi. tokyo. reality television show.

upon entering his palace, you find yourself on the set of a fusion reality/game show, and are greeted by one of akechi's shadows, the hero prince. he is bright and always smiling, fluctuating in age but generally either around nine or fifteen. sometimes, he will briefly excuse himself so a member of the television crew can give him a new face with which to replace the current one, obscuring the nothingness underneath. emotional distress, especially anger and embarrassment, will cause his face to crack like a porcelain doll.

the hero prince is the star of the show. he is good at everything, and everyone loves him. he's the audience favorite! he wins every challenge on the show, and will swear it isn't scripted - he's just that good! really!

it's impossible to make much progress, let alone find the treasure, during this first visit. you're stuck on the set, and you can play televised games against akechi and the other contestants, but akechi will always win and his demeanor will never shift. he is popular, he is perfect, he is loved. everything is about him. there are cameras everywhere, eyes everywhere.

to proceed, you have to let his real self know that you know he isn't perfect, that everything is an act. and the next time you enter, the facade will have cracked. the hero prince will follow you instead of guiding you this time, and he's obviously being controlled by puppet strings. his face will crack much more often, and he'll ask for attention and validation a lot.

you like me, right? hey, look at this! one time, we played a game, and the way i won was so smart, listen to me! you like me, right? do you love me? do you enjoy my company? am i bothering you?

if you give him enough validation, the palace will begin to repair itself and lock you out of further progress again. if you ignore him, he will become increasingly desperate, and the palace will become more hostile, with more high-level shadows appearing. if you tell him you don't like him, he will attack you then and there, but retreat if it seems like he's losing, and will not interact with you again. if you participate in challenges this time, a cognition of joker will be playing as well, and he will have essentially taken akechi's place. he'll always win, everyone loves him, he's wonderful and perfect to an almost cartoonish degree. but he'll be extremely nice to akechi no matter what, even as the other competitors begin to laugh and make fun of him if you play multiple games. pictures, statues, posters, and the like of akechi will have been replaced by joker as well.

eventually, you might be able to find your way backstage. here, you can see the scripts, the teleprompters, the rigging - how everything about akechi is fake. everything is scripted, his victories are choreographed. you can hear the crew members bad mouthing him, calling him worthless and stupid and ugly, both generally and in very specific and incredibly personal ways. no one actually wants him there. some will even talk about wanting to hurt or kill him. the cameras and eyes will become more apparent and unsettling, this time obviously not part of the controlled environment of the tv crew.
