How Taika Waititi Ruined Thor
Tumblr media
[This essay talks negatively about director Taika Waititi and his Thor films. Please don’t read if you happen to enjoy them.
Despite my best efforts, this post is 10,343 words long. Here is a table of contents for ease:
1. INTRODUCTION 2. CHARACTER – Personality – Funny nature – The way he talks – The way he operates – Power ups – Agency – Side note in ‘agency’: shirtless scenes 3. RELATIONSHIPS – His father – Odin – His love – Jane – Supporting characters – Weapons 4. HIS STORY – Character arc – His way forward – Torture p*rn 5. APPEARANCE – The ugly suit in Thor4 – Shabby AF casual clothes – Gouged out eye – Stripped fOr FuN 6. WEB OF LIES 7. CONCLUSION ]
Despite Thor: Ragnarok (2017) (Thor3) introducing a complete change of tone for the Thor franchise, the mainstream media has decided it was only ever received positively by 100% of the audience. Not a ‘divisive’ or even a ‘generally favored’, but a ‘unanimously loved’ tag was given to this movie and its director Taika Waititi for “saving Thor”.
You have to wonder who were those people who went to the theatres for the first two films if this film saved the franchise because they were both hits. But seeing as I’m the non-existent 0% of the population that doesn’t echo that sentiment of the media, I decided to shed light on how Taika Waititi didn’t save him, but actually ruined, destroyed, and annihilated Thor in every way possible.
CHARACTER
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: there is nothing wrong with Thor being funny, as long as it isn’t at the expense of his character. And now you know why I’m writing this thesis.

um... not to be rude but isn't not having Loki in the next Thor movie what you wanted? I can't help but remember a bunch of anti-Ragnarok posts about how Taika Waititi turned the franchise into a big joke and calling CH "Chris Odinson" who insulted TM? Wasn't it keep Loki away from that at all costs? I don't understand why you changed your mind...
Hi sorry this got buried in my notes and I didn't see it
I haven't really changed my mind? Sorta? I still think that Taika Waititi did a terrible job with Ragnarok. One of the things I liked about the Thor franchise was its darker themes, at least compared to the rest of the mcu (and I also liked Loki. Obviously) and TW just kinda smashed that up and replaced it with awful characterization and like, butt jokes (idk it's been forever since I've seen Ragnarok).
But ever since the Loki series, I've kinda been like...actually, can we go back to Ragnarok? Cuz despite the shittiness of that mess of a movie, at least it didn't give us false hope at representation. At least its creator never pretended to like Loki. And at least it gave us a few good moments (I did love that Loki used their horns as a weapon, and I did like Thor's power upgrade).
Obviously, I still prefer Thor 1 and 2. But I've lost all hope that the mcu will ever be as good as it once was.
Also, as Tom Hiddleston once said (I think, idk): there is no Loki without Thor, and no Thor without Loki.
Actually, I think that's another reason the Loki show sucked. Thor did not show up at all, and was rarely talked about. We all know how much Thor means to Loki ("I may be envious, but never doubt that I love you") so the fact that their love for Thor wasn't really addressed (or even mentioned) really bothered me.
So, having a Thor movie without Loki is like having a Loki series without Thor, in that it's inevitably going to suck (even more than I predict it still would with Loki in it).
Also, maybe it's the optimist in me, but I really, really want to believe that Taika can make a good Thor movie if he really tried (as in, correct characterization and all that). I am glad that he sees Jane Foster's Thor as the Mighty Thor instead of just "Lady" Thor (though I do have my anxieties about how he'll go about portraying Jane). I think that if he gave Loki a chance, he could see our favorite god of mischief as more than just a pampered jerk (like they were portrayed in more recent mcu projects) and instead as a broken but loveable trickster who has gone through so much and received so little.
So, to summarize my feelings: yes, I think that Taika did a bad job with both Thor and Loki in Ragnarok, but I do think that Love and Thunder will be even worse than Ragnarok if Thor's love of Loki is not acknowledged and if he doesn't bring Loki to life in the form of kid Loki or if Loki doesn't at least make a cameo. Because let's face it, Thor's story and Loki's story are tied together so tight that you can't possibly make anything good about one without the other
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, Loki was way, waaaayyyy worse in the comics (literally called themself the god of evil for a while) and Thor still missed them and brought them back. Also the fact that Thor thought of Loki more as his brother than Balder is pretty hilarious considering Balder has never tried to kill Thor and is also actually related to him
So, yeah. I at least want a Loki cameo because Thor and Loki are important to each other, dammit

“Actor Chris Hemsworth had a difficult time pronouncing ‘Nidavellir’ in Avengers: Infinity War. In fact, he did it on multiple occasions, and both mispronunciations made it into the final film.
The actor, who plays Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, pronounced Nidavellir as Nivadellir. Videos of the goof-up made it to Twitter. “Thor says ‘Nivadellir’ instead of ‘Nidavellir’. (The d and v are switched) He says it wrong twice on Quill’s ship, and again while riding inside the pod with Rocket and Groot. Yet, In the third act of the film he correctly pronounces it as ‘Nidavellir’,” one fan noted on Twitter.”

Funny Moments In Thor Ragnarök
Thor 1
Thor 2
Avengers 1
I know I said I was gonna do Avengers Age of Ultron too, but because it didn’t have Loki in it, I decided to scrap that idea because this series is mostly focused on the relationship between Loki and Thor. So without further ado, all the funny moments in Thor Ragnarök. Side note: This accounts for all the moments were SUPPOSED to be funny. However these are mostly toilet humor, so whether or not it was actually funny to the viewer just depends on that person’s taste in humor. Funny moments listed below cut line which is underneath the tag list.
Edit for clarification: This is not a post supporting Thor Ragnarok. This is an anti post. In another post (that I’m too lazy to write right now) I will be explaining the difference in humor tones between this movie and the previous three. I will also be explaining why this tonal change is hated by anti Ragnarok people.

ENDGAME, THOR AND MENTAL HEALTH
Warning: This is going to be a long and a little personal rant. It can be a little triggering for some people, so if you want to be safe just skip over the paragraph marked by “////////”
 ENDGAME, THOR AND MENTAL HEALTH
I saw the scene where Thor gets slap by Rocket and while I agree with everyone that pointed out how incredibly wrong is to slap someone who is having a panic attack, that’s not the part that I want to focus in this post. It’s Thor. Or better yet Chris Odinson.
Because it was his reactions, his portrayal of someone having a panic attack that caught my attention more than the slap. And I can’t say how his acting looked false to me (or lack of acting – I don’t know anymore if he even acts when he’s in these movies). More than the slap, Chris Hemsworth’ portrayal of a moment that should be delicate and vulnerable for Thor was what bothered me the most. And that’s because you can see that he’s not even trying to make that scene something serious. It’s a joke to him as much as it was a joke to whoever wrote that scene.
And it was disrespectful to the character of Thor and to the audience – specially to those who suffer from panic attacks or any other form of mental illness. It saddened me that a scene like that (and of Frigga telling him to eat a salad) could be wrote/made and put in a film with the only objective of to make the audience laugh.
The next paragraph can be triggering so skip over if you want.
/////////////// When I was younger (with 13 years old more or less – I’m 26 now) I used to punch the walls until my fingers bleed. I also used to make superficial cuts on the back of my hand. It was my way of dealing with my personal problems, my pain and my angry. And I admit that I was very lucky because when my family realized what I was doing they talked to me gently, tried to understand help me. I didn’t seek professional help on that time, but I stopped. It was hard and today I have a very nasty tendinitis and weak wrists that I can’t stop thinking are consequences of me punching the walls. But I stopped because I found something more health to help me deal with what I was feeling /////////////////////////////
End of the triggering part
I found art. It was art that helped me to stop and that gave me a safe and health way to express myself, to deal with my feelings. I always liked to read, to write, to draw and to paint but then I started doing more frequently, with more feeling. I started to put on my art everything that I couldn’t quite put into words. My poems, my stories and my drawings became my own personal therapy. My friends say that I’m a very balanced person but that’s only true because I find my balance in the art that I create.
So, it’s sad to see the cinema (a form of art on itself) to show such disrespect to the mental health. And I think that happens because the movies aren’t art to Marvel, they are just products made to entertain their audience. But even with the movies being only products they could show a little respect to a subject that already suffers to be discussed. Because it’s not easy to talk about mental health. It’s still a subject surrounded by stigma and prejudice. So, a little of respect is the minimum that a movie made by a brand as big as Marvel/Disney could offer to its audience and characters.
So, yes, I understand that is not complete Chris Hemsworth’s fault that this particular scene came to happen but when you pay attention to the way he acts on that scene you realize that he doesn’t care – he’s in for the laughs as well. He doesn’t even try to give his character a little dignity, a little bit of honor despite the poorly written (to say the least) script. And that is more evident when you compare to how Tom Hiddleston could give complexity and emotion to Loki despite the script (as we can see in Ragnarok and Infinity War – movies that don’t treat his character kindly).
I don’t agree with the slap – it was wrong, it was horrible that it was allowed to be in the film but for me Chris Hemsworth portrayal is as just as wrong and disrespectful, to Thor, to the audience and to all the fans that found themselves in a similar situation.
Because art can help, art can save. To see yourself in a character of a piece of fiction (such as a movie) and see that character be treated with respect and understanding can help. In the same way, see the character that you identify with be treated with disrespect, as a joke, can hurt.
And with Thor, I think that Marvel could have helped IF the movie had treated Thor in a kind and understanding way. But the way it was made I believe it made more damage than anything else.
And this only pushed me even more away from the MCU.

I just had the most hilarious, petty dream.
So unrelated note, I was at what seemed to be a slide-themed amusement park, with this one area doubling as sort of an entertainment room with a TV screen and there was food and whine, and I feel like some kinda craft we were doing. Which doesn't matter cuz once I got food and drink the stuff was gone.
My mom was there, sitting at a table behind me and as I returned.. she was pointing out that there were two men on either side of my sit, now sitting at me table comfortably.
Taika Watiti and Chris Hemsworth.
Now of course my first instinct is to abandon my seat, but instead I push through and take my seat. They're nice, they greet me as I put my food and drink down. And Taika, after they introduce themselves, asks me in his unique accent, "So what would your name be?"
I answer with just my first name, "Jordan", and he makes a flattering comment/compliment about my name. I just smile, I might've said thank you, but I'd checked my phone (for a reason--it had a Loki background). I set it down, and Taika and Chris take notice of the background before my screen goes black. And Taika just looks like a weird mix of amused and annoyed as he says, "So you like Loki...?"
I smile at him cordially and nod, and say "Big fan." Nonchalantly opened my drawing books to indicate Loki art.
He laughs, nearly scoffs, and turns his attention back to the TV. That's when Chris speaks up, almost leaning in so he could rest his chin on his hand as he asked, "So how do you sleep at night? Liking and defending a character like that?" Feel like he made a remark about betrayals, being sneaky, being evil, can't remember specific words.
Me, I smile and mimick his lean and headrest as I answer. "Perfectly. He's not bad in the way people like to paint him. And besides, he's been betrayed and failed too. You like to say you helped him but you were never really there for him when and how he needed it, even if you were willing. Still left him very neglected."
I notice he looks annoyed and amused with me saying 'you' instead of 'Thor', which I intended, so before he could say anything, I speak up again. "Oh honest mistake. And hey, nothing you haven't done before, right? 'lokis betrayed me so many times, why would I take him back?' But if course you meant Thor. Right? We're human, we make mistakes."
He looks like he wants to say something, but he doesn't. By this point, stuff gets unclear and forgotten, I probably continued flaunting my Loki fan-ness, and those stubborn asses didn't move. But in shirt, they were both welcoming and nice and shit until they realized my fandom and judged me. Taika basically acted like I was no longer existent, and Chris seemed like he was either going to try and change my opinion, it guilt me for it.
Sorry, just thought it was hilarious enough to share.

So Taika Watiti is directing Thor 4.
Great.
Just.
Freaking.
Great.
After the terribleness that was Ragnarok, I have 0 expectations and 0 confidence. The Thor franchise has already gone down hill thanks to Watiti and Hemsworth,(and their hatred against Loki) so it just makes me sad.

‘Ragnarok’, ‘Love and Thunder’ and how not to write films
Tumblr media
[Disclaimer: This essay talks negatively about director Taika Waititi’s Thor films. Please don’t read if you happen to like them. Word count - 3.6K words]
You’d think that after all these years I’d run out of things to say about the myriad ways Marvel has screwed over Thor’s character. You’d be wrong.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe often gets criticism for being by the numbers and mediocre. However, with the rise of streaming and making and releasing content becoming far too – for want of a better word – easy, you’re at least guaranteed basic competence with the MCU in a sea of badly-made films.
This isn’t exactly high praise. But I’m seeing far too many movies with no effort put into camera work and sound design and stories with no pacing, internal logic, or character arcs. Whereas the MCU offers the quintessential movie experience everyone can enjoy. You know their movies will be fun, popcorn entertainment with proper 3-act structures, character development, and technical soundness.
Or at least I believed so. Because with Thor4, even that one saving grace of MCU is gone. It fails at basic storytelling, setups, payoffs, character arcs, and resolutions. It’s honestly surreal how it was supposed to be something extra special being the first solo 4th film and managed to fail at even basic competence. And funnily enough, it was exactly the same in Thor3, but everyone was so busy hailing it as a masterpiece that they just ignored it all.

If Thor met Chris Odinson, he’d tell him “You’re so petty and so tiny.”.

I’m here with analyzing another one of Screenrant’s articles on @loveroflokiforpoeticjustice ‘s request. This article has some good points, but as always when it comes to Loki;s characterizations and arc, there are a lot of misinterpretations. Let’s take a look.
10. Focusing Too Much On Loki As A Tragic Figure
As far as sympathy goes, Loki has received far too much of this, with most of it being unwarranted. His worst traits have been ignored, mainly because Loki was presented as a tragic figure, which wasn’t even on purpose but ended up happening due to the MCU not giving enough characterization toward the ones he wronged.
Loki doesn’t need to paint him as a villain, but it should avoid bringing his tragic status back since it diminishes the values of the supporting characters. It also stands as a barrier in the way of seeing Loki as anything other than a reluctant antagonist.
Loki is a tragic figure. That’s one of the most important parts of his backstory and arc. Identity issues, internalized racism, being lied to by his family, trying to prove himself only to be rejected, committing suicide and then being tortured and mind-warped by a mad man; all of this make Loki one of the most tragic characters of MCU. Loki being sympathetic is probably the most important reason that he is getting his own show. That’s another one of important traits of his character. Loki’s worst traits never ignored, but that doesn’t stop people from feeling sympathy and/or identify with a character who were abused, mocked, othered, silenced, rejected, left alone and misunderstood by his loved ones. The sympathy Loki gets has never been unwarranted. This didn’t happen because MCU didn’t give enough characterization to people Loki wronged, it happened because Loki was wronged too, mostly by hero-coded character who the narrative painted to be in the right. Despite hero/villain coding some of the fans were able to notice that. Loki being a sympathetic was also on purpose. KB and Tom created Loki based on Shakespearean characters and Tom has always played him to be sympathetic.
Ignoring the most important parts of Loki’s character and arc, because of supporting characters is such an illogical reasoning. To not diminish the value of supporting characters, you can give them enough depth, not diminishing your main character.
Also Loki was a reluctant antagonist(this doesn’t mean he doesn’t enjoy the chaos and mischief though). He was given the throne and was asked to make his father proud when he was in a terrible mental state. He never wanted to be in a situation to fight against Thor. He only wanted to be his equal and be seen worthy by Odin. In Avengers, he was literally under duress and threat of torture by Thanos. If this doesn’t show reluctance, I don’t know what does.
9. Presenting A Love Interest As A Way Of Character Development
it would be completely unsuitable for a character like Loki, who has shown zero interest in romance and would suffer if the only way he can change is through a love interest rather than through his experiences.
Kind of agree with this one. But not because it’s not suitable for Loki. Just because he hasn’t show interest in romance doesn’t mean it has to remain that way(unless they portray him as ace which I seriously doubt they go for it). It’s just not what he need in current stage of his arc.
8. Turning The Main Character Into A Caricature Of Himself
However, the MCU made the mistake of turning him into too much of a jokester by the end of his original run, as he became a one-trick pony. The TV series needs to dabble in this area in creative ways by having Loki use his funny personality as a means of deception rather than always cracking jokes.
Agree with this one. Obviously Loki being too much of a jokester is TR’s fault that made him ooc. Because Loki wasn’t like that in previous movies.
7. Characters Making Snap Decisions
A lot of the fight against Thanos made no sense, with the most major ones where characters snapped even though they had a plan. Loki has done so himself in the past, such as when he commanded the Destroyer to kill Thor, only to later claim he always thought of Thor as his brother.
The Loki series is placed in a position where snap decisions are a possibility since the titular character has been known to fly off the handle. However, since Loki’s being presented as a cool, escapist character in the TV show, there’s no need to have him be so emotionally driven.
There is sth called emotional and mental breakdown due to someone being under too much pressure, shock, etc. I don’t see why the show needs to avoid showing a completely human reaction which is also a trait that was seen previously by the character.
Also how do you know how Loki was presented in the series when it’s not aired yet. And why one of the most emotionally driven characters should be devoid of one of his characteristics?
6. Suddenly Showing Previously Unknown Powers
Several characters like Star-Lord, Scarlet Witch, and Thor have had these sudden power-ups, only for them not to factor too much in later stories. This mistake would feel even bigger for Loki since his new powers would be treated as a big deal in the show but won’t be of significance in the grand scheme of things.
Loki’s set of skills have been fleshed out enough for his real fans to understand how they work. Since his original run was so extended, bringing out new abilities that were never hinted at before would be something of a cop-out since it would make Loki too much like the other heroes.
None of these character had sudden power-ups! They were given their true range of their power. Loki is character who is depowered and he needs to be given his true range of power. I also don’t see why Loki being like other heroes in case of power is a bad thing?
5. Leaving Supporting Characters With Ambiguous Endings
The Loki series is most likely going to be a one-time thing like WandaVision, meaning the supporting characters seen here will have a very small chance of turning up again. By keeping their fates and future up in the air, fans will be miffed at the lack of closure.
There are talks about a second season, so ambiguous ending isn’t bad if it’s true.
4. Not Mentioning Obvious Plot Points And References
On other occasions, the MCU has opted to avoid mentioning or clearing up obvious questions from fans. This has been somewhat of an insult toward viewers who watched these stories for resolutions.
The most anticipated character fans want to see in Loki is his brother Thor. Fans won’t be happy if his status isn’t mentioned at all, as it’s the first thing they’ll want to know. With so much time travel confusion happening as well, the MCU’s mistake of ambiguity should be avoided at all costs in favor of offering clarity.
No? I don’t know about others but I have zero interest in seeing Thor in Loki series after the mess TR, IW and EG made of his characterization. In fact keep Chris Odinson as far away from Loki as possible.
3. Uneven Display Of Powers
Many like to argue that Loki is better than Thor due to his knack for using magic alongside his fight skills, but the MCU made the mistake of making him too easy to beat as the franchise went on. In the end, his powers are very uneven as he’s beaten powerful characters at certain points but then lost to others who seem weaker.
With the focus now squarely on Loki, the TV series needs to confirm the exact extent of his abilities and what level of beings he can face off against. This will allow viewers to understand how Loki works rather than try to figure out why he loses when he shouldn’t be.
Agree again. I just want to add that the times Loki lost when he shouldn’t have, was due to bad writing and an intention to nerf Loki.
2. Downplaying Villainous Behavior
Although Loki has a lot of fans, it shouldn’t hide the fact that he’s betrayed a lot of characters. However, the MCU has a bad habit of downplaying the work of villains, to the point where their malevolent activities have taken a backseat to their charisma.
Loki won’t be the villain this time around, meaning it’s essential that the actual baddies are shown as the antagonists they are in order to highlight Loki’s own protagonist role. By downplaying their villainy, the idea of them being a threat to Loki won’t come across as it should.
The only time Loki betrayed someone that actually mattered was in Thor1 when he lied to Thor and almost killed him. The article that is linked to, either counted lots of instances as betrayals like trying to kill GM, Thanos and Malekith which is ridiculous, or once again misinterpreted Loki’s actions completely.
Also when have MCU ever downplayed villainy? If anything they always downplayed heroes’ mistakes and wrong doings.
1. Presenting Too Many Points Of View
Loki is a series that needs to have the main character front and center, so bringing different points of view will be counterproductive. The MCU has also used different characters to steer the focus away from the main protagonist for the shock value when the latter character suddenly returns, but since Loki has already had the mysterious aura previously, it’s time for viewers to follow his story rather than guess what he’s up to.
Totally agree with this one.
So, the article has good points. But it seems the writer has sth against Loki being sympathetic, emotionally driven and getting his true range of powers lest it makes him too much like other heroes!!! I wonder by ignoring his canonical traits and backstory, how the show is supposed to explore the character then. Loki’s issues and him healing, must be one the main focuses of the plot.
