Teena through Zouey's eyes - Famous artworks and movies in Playboyy the Series - Part 2

Like in EP1, the Teena-Zouey scenes in the second episode of Playboyy also reference other pieces of media. I was able to identify imagery that directly copies the Canadian-French gay movie "J'ai tué ma mère" (eng title "I killed my mother") from 2009.

First, let's compare the scenes.

The two boys in both the movie and in Playboyy are also depicted in a similar way, including the background that consists of old newspapers:

However, that's pretty much where the similarities end. I could go on and interpret what it means that they used "J'ai tué ma mère" for Playboyy, maybe compare the two main characters with Teena and Zouey and so on. But to be honest, I don't think it's that deep.

I suspect the reason why famous paintings, sculptures and now even movies are referenced in Playboyy is very simple: These scenes are shown from Zouey's point of view and Zouey is an artist and he is very gay and he is very horny 😌 (the paint splattering has a totally different meaning in Playboyy than in the French movie > Teena and Zouey had a lot of fun together hehe)

It's not a coincidence that pretty much all the art works used show the naked human body. Zouey himself said in the first episode: "We are majoring in art because we like beautiful things. What else is more beautiful than the human body?" It's very obvious what Zouey believes to be the most beautiful body type: a male body with the classical Greek proportions. And let's face it, Teena comes very close to that ideal (yes, I'm using this as an excuse to post naked Teena ✌).

The Greek ideal has always had a certain homoerotic connotation (even in ancient times), so it's no surprise that Zouey is attracted to it as well. And in Zouey's case, that boy get's really horny about it. Being sexually attracted to pieces of art is actually not that unheard of. He could lean towards pictophilia (attraction to pictorial erotic art), schediaphilia (attraction to cartoon characters), agalmatophilia (attraction to statues). Or Zouey simply can't get aroused unless he is confronted with beauty, be it in a painting, a manga or in real life.

Right now Zouey is focused on a real life beauty: Teena. But what I find interesting about this is, that by viewing Teena as the ideal male body, Zouey is forgetting that Teena is a human like everyone else. Teena actually feeds into that fantasy. He presents himself as the perfect muse, he is charming and sweet and not too pushy. But is that actually the real Teena? When asked what his dreams and plans for the future are, Teena doesn't give an honest answer.

My best guess is that Teena too wants to live in that fantasy, in which Zouey and he have this perfect relationship and both of them are happy. This will most likely present a problem in the future. Because in the end Teena is a normal human. He has actual real things he dreams of and he has flaws. It's something both of them will have to accept at some point and maybe then "What else is more beautiful than the human body?" will become "What else is more beautiful than the human heart?"

[A collection of letters between two correspondents, but all written in an unfamiliar code or cipher. At the end of the scrapbook is a sheet titled 'Plaintext Deciphered by G'.] Chosen of Bhaal - Your proposal is intriguing. Tell me more about the Crown of Karsus. Chosen of Bane - It was created to enhance and broadcast the dominance of its creator, but during the Folly it was inverted, turned inward. Now, instead of the wearer dominating others, others can dominate the wearer. Chosen of Bhaal - Useful. I like it. How do you exert this dominance? Chosen of Bane - The crown has three begemmed finials. They are the foci. And... they are detachable. Chosen of Bhaal - Three? So that's why our masters want Myrkul added to the cabal. With the Crown on the right cranium, we would rule from the shadows. But how do we get it? Chosen of Bane - We steal it from Mephistopheles himself. And I know who can get us there - a diabolist named Helsik.

Look at these two, scheming. Honestly all of these are so short it feels almost like they were passing notes during a meeting rather than writing letters to each other but I guess they did both have the influence to have things like this delivered directly without having to wait for whatever mail service Baldur's Gate has... I'm just imagining some poor messenger having to run back and forth across the city because these two refuse to have an actual meeting instead of writing to each other and no one on either side is brave enough to suggest that maybe talking in person would be more efficient. Not entirely sure how Gortash got his own letters when presumably Durge would've had them originally (unless he kept copies?), but it's very fun. Although there's something sad in Durge not recognizing the code that they and Gortash used to communicate; I know that it's just the same text that everyone gets, but there's a sort of tragedy in how this is something they used to communicate with someone important to them, they might even have come up with it with Gortash just so the two of them could write to each other privately, and now they can't even read it.

Also I'm still very curious about the timeline of events here. This seems to be the first time Gortash suggested they use the Crown of Karsus, but clearly they were at least able to get into contact prior to this point; did they decide to team up just in general before they had any sort of plan? Were they acquainted somehow before the alliance came up as an idea? Were they just aware of each other's presence in the city and one of them wrote to the other when the idea of working together occurred to them? And I am also once again wondering when exactly Myrkul joined the alliance. Obviously they haven't at this point since Bane and Bhaal want Myrkul added, and I get the sense that Ketheric joined at some point post-heist (in his journal he makes it clear that he thinks the Netherstones were used to convince him and the Bhaalists to join the alliance, when these letters show that Durge and Gortash were allies before the Netherstones and the Crown were brought up as an option; either Durge and Gortash lied to him about how the alliance first started or the Netherstones had been acquired and Durge had one before Ketheric was on the scene and he made an assumption), but beyond that it's hard to tell what happened when.

Also, Gortash? It's cute that you're keeping all the notes you exchanged with your ally, but a code isn't very helpful if you keep the plaintext right with it. ...Unless (if we want to make it angsty) that code was exclusively used between him and Durge and once they vanished he cared less about keeping it a secret because it was now useless...

Hey, Pi. Not sure if you're still active, but I am modding my copy of TWDG: Definitive and have been following your model swap tutorials for season 4. I was wondering if you knew how to make multiple model swap mods run together without any conflicts? My goal is to have four running at once (Player/Clem controlling Minnie, Minnie replaced by Clem/AJ as Tenn, Tenn as AJ) for a modded playthrough. For Minnie swapped by Clem, I wanted Clem to use her ranch outfit instead of default. Thanks.

I'm still here, but I'm in like a constant state of hibernation unless prodded.

To answer your question - you can theoretically do as many model swaps as you want in your game so long as you know what you're doing and have the right amount of "parts" to overwrite with. There will always be fiddly moments where things may look off, but complete breaking shouldn't happen all that often.

With that said... swapping out AJ makes certain scenes be unplayable - I don't think it matters who the character you replace him with is, it moves the interaction points in a few scenes and makes them impossible to select.

Off the top of my head, in episode one during the car crash sequence, you need to get a knife from AJ's hand via clicking on one of those interaction circles - changing AJ to another character moves that circle outside of your vision and thus causes you to fail the sequence. And in episode 2, the scene where you need to remove bullet fragments has the same problem - you can't interact with what you need to and therefore you can't progress.

The only way to get passed those moments (as far as I know) is to remove the modded content, play to the next checkpoint, then exit out of the game and put the modded content back in.

If it helps at all, this is kinda how I would go about things...

Get your files for the character parts you need: - Minerva's files: episode 3 or 4 archives [make sure to save the textures as well] - McCarroll Clementine's files: episode 4 archives [note that she uses the "sk62_clementine402.skl", but her meshes and textures use the word "Mccarroll" with both the 400 and 402 number] - AJ's files: any episode archive depending on the outfit - Tenn's files: any episode archive [note that his name in the files is "tennyson"]

Try swapping in one character at a time: - KEEP ALL THOSE UNALTERED FILES SEPARATED FROM THE FILES YOU'RE RENAMING - Just trust me, it gets real confusing if you lose track of what has been renamed and what hasn't - especially when you are doing a swap that directly "flips" characters - Make a new folder and name it clearly something like "Minnie replacing Clementine" - copy your Minerva files here and rename them to overwrite Clem's files - Replacing Clementine with Minerva for all episodes requires you to overwrite the the "sk62_clementine400" files for episode 1, then the "sk62_clementine402" files for episode 2 and onwards. Episode 4 has many iterations of Clem's mesh for her lower body - it's a pain to make files for all of them, but just replace all those files with Minerva's lower body.

Check that the character appears correctly: - Go into the game directly and play for a moment to check that the swap has worked appropriately - You can see in the episode select screen if Clementine and AJ have been replaced, or you can also check the character viewer, but they aren't always accurate to how the character appears in the game - If you see the character models appear spindly like their limbs are very warped, this is probably a "skl" file issue... double check that you've used the proper skl to match with the meshes you're using in your replacement. - Invisible parts can be because textures from later episodes haven't been copied over [unaltered - you shouldn't need to rename any textures for this swap to be what you want]

Move on to the next character: - Doing it character by character will make it easier - But still, put things in their own folders with clear names - In the end, you should be able to take all of your "renamed" files, stick them in one folder, and be able to make a mod file out of it

A Clash of Kings - 47 ARYA IX (pages 609-627)

Northmen arrive as prisoners at Harrenhal, and Arya uses her third Name to coerce Jaqen into staging a jailbreak. Jaqen H'ghar leaves the party.

"There's ghosts, I know there is. (...) Pia saw something in the buttery last night." Arya made a rude noise. Pia was always seeing things in the buttery. usually they were men.

Ha! well, as long as it's all consensual, more power to her.

"I need a whole tray. Ser Armory is partial to them." Arya hated Ser Armory. "Let's spit on them."

Arya has regained enough of her moxy to be viciously petty. I love that for her. As long as it doesn't get her into trouble.

"And if we did escape, where would we go?" ... "I'm a 'prentice smith, and one day might be I'll make a master armorer... if I don't run off and lose my feet or get myself killed." He turned away from her, picked up his hammer once more, and began to bang. Arya's hands curled into helpless fists. "The next helm you make, put mule's ears on it place of bull's horns!"

Gendry has a good point. The number of guards might be severely reduced, but it's way more than two, they'd be out numbered in a jiffy. And on the very slim chance they did escape, Winterfell is a long way from Harrenhal, across contested countryside with injured men.

Arya's finally getting some of her confidence back, feeling like she can make a difference even if she knows it's all small scale and immediate, and now she's back to feeling helpless because she can't help the men loyal to her family. She's being forced to realise how much of that power she now wields is an illusion, when she's standing so close to what should be a major boon in resources and allies.

I just hope she doesn't do anything rash.

"A girl will weep. A girl will lose her only friend." "You're not my friend. A friend would help me." She stepped away from him, balanced on the balls of her feet in case he threw his knife. "I'd never kill a friend." Jaqen's smile came and went. "A girl might... name another name then, if a friend did help?" "A girl might," she said. "If a friend did help."

1: so in the show they have this giant room in the back of the House of Black and White which is like a face library right? I don't know if it's canon to the books, but they the show does. And I just thought it would be so awkward if, like, any number of people can borrow a face at the same time and if they get killed while wearing it that's fine, it's still available for others, more like an e-book than a physical copy, with the original kept in the vault UNLESS this sort of situation in which a faceless man is directly tasked to kill one of their identities. Then the face is destroyed and no one ever gets to borrow it again.

I feel like that may not have made a lot of sense. (It also definitely isn't a thing because Arya sees Jaqen later in the show, but that's not the point. Also consider personality hive minds.)

If you get that reference: I am so sorry. But it has ruined this scene for me. Arya's out here being clever and my brain skipped sideways and I started cacking.

"I take back the name." ... "The debt is paid," Arya agreed reluctantly. She felt a little sad. Now she was just a mouse again. "A god has his due. And now a man must die." A strange smile touched the lips of Jaqen H'ghar. "Die?" she said, confused. What did he mean? "But I unsaid the name. You don't need to die now." "I do. My time is done."

And now Arya gets to learn that her actions have consequences, and somethings just can't be taken back. I get the feeling this is about to be reflected on a slightly larger scale. This jailbreak is about to go not the way she expected it to.

...Oh? Success? Oh... success. Eeeeewwww, Bolton senior. Blergh.

But she's not telling him her name~ Thank goodness. "If she'd just reveal her self all would be well UwU" WRONG!!! He cannot be trusted! "Leeches purge the bad blood" pfff. That's literally not how that works. but more importantly:

JUSTICE (BY BEAR) FOR YOREN!!!!

I don't normally quote other people in my posts (I think that's kind of rude), but @hermiones-amortentia had reblogged one of mine and commented on it. I'm unable to respond to it directly for some reason, so I'm guessing that they've disabled the comments section or something.

As you can see, there's no "reply" option, unless I'm doing it wrong. Anyway, I thought that I owe them an explanation, so I'll just take up this space to do that.

However, I should first mention that I'm not interested in getting into an argument, so if they respond to it again, I'm probably not going to enter into a debate. If you'd like to have the final word, I'd be happy to let you do that!

So.

*rubs hands together*.

In my initial post, I'd phrased it as:

when he is willing to comfort Hermione when she's upset.

It's true that Harry isn't very receptive to people who get emotional, but there's probably a reason for that. It could be due to how he was abused as a child, and the fact that he didn't really have any friends before he met Ron while traveling to Hogwarts.

But, of course, that doesn't mean he never comforts anyone in the book, including Hermione. If you're familiar enough with the storyline, it's easy to note that the user has just cherry-picked a few specific instances (out of context) to make their point.

Here are a couple of examples to show what I'd meant in the original post:

“Don’t!” squealed Hermione. Startled, Harry looked over just in time to see her burst into tears over her copy of Spellman’s Syllabary.

“Oh no,” said Harry, struggling to get up from the old camp bed. “Hermione, I wasn’t trying to upset —”

But with a great creaking of rusty bedsprings, Ron bounded off the bed and got there first. One arm around Hermione, he fished in his jeans pocket and withdrew a revolting-looking handkerchief that he had used to clean out the oven earlier.

“You’re still really angry at me, aren’t you?” said Hermione; he looked up to see fresh tears leaking out of her eyes, and knew that his anger must have shown in his face.

“No,” he said quietly. “No, Hermione, I know it was an accident. You were trying to get us out of there alive, and you were incredible. I’d be dead if you hadn’t been there to help me.”

There's also the part in half-blood prince where Ron upsets Hermione, and she runs out of the class with Harry following her because he sensed that she needed him more or whatever. I might be forgetting other examples.

Now, I suppose that I should respond to the other scenes which had been added in the reblog of my post.

The instant they arrived, Hermione dropped Harry’s hand and walked away from him, finally sitting down on a large rock, her face on her knees, shaking with what he knew were sobs. He watched her, supposing that he ought to go and comfort her, but something kept him rooted to the spot.

The last couple of words are the key here. "Something kept Harry rooted to the spot." What could it be? It's not very difficult to hazard a guess: Ron had accused her of having chosen Harry before leaving, which was what was most probably preying on his mind when he noticed that he should comfort her.

If anything, it's just Harry trying to not be a traitor, as that was exactly what Ron had feared of. It's not him being a sleazeball, it's just the best thing that he could do. Also note how Hermione had suddenly dropped Harry's hand to walk away from him immediately. She was the one who'd placed a distance between them, not Harry.

“He’s g-g-gone! Disapparated!” She threw herself into a chair, curled up, and started to cry. Harry felt dazed. He stooped, picked up the Horcrux, and placed it around his own neck. He dragged blankets off Ron’s bunk and threw them over Hermione. Then he climbed onto his own bed and stared up at the dark canvas roof, listening to the pounding of the rain.

It's literally a minute or so after Ron had left, and Harry was both angry and upset at the argument which had occurred. I don't think it's justified to blame him for not getting over his emotions immediately (speaking of which, shouldn't we blaming Ron for abandoning his friends now?) Also, he was concerned about Hermione.

Did someone notice how he'd ensured that she still had blankets on while she'd slept?

Same as what I'd explained three paragraphs back. He didn't want to make it seem as if Ron's fears were actually true. That certainly doesn't mean he didn't care about Hermione; indeed, there are so many examples of it that it would be difficult to even explain all of them here.

One of my favorite Youtubers Laura Caldwell has done a video of her top 22 thrift finds of 2022 and I thought I might try a top 10. In no particular order:

I found a Herend Queen Victoria pattern ceramic basket. I've never liked ceramic baskets but this is my dream if-I-won-the-lottery dinner set so when I found something in this pattern in a thrift store I HAD to get it.

I got a mid century ceramic panther 2.5 feet tall, no cracks or chips. I had literally had daydreams where I walk into the thrift store and before I'm even in the door I see a ceramic big cat, I make a bee line for it and grab it growling 'Mine!' and march it up to the counter without even looking at the price. When I find out the price it's ridiculously reasonable. The only things that went different to how I'd daydreamed it was that my mother was very embarrassed by my squealing and my brother carried it to the counter for me.

The most stunning 1884 copy of The Life and Exploration of Dr Livingstone The Great Missionary Traveler. There are some horrifically racist bits, it was written by Victorians but he was very anti slavery and in one of his adventures someone was attacked by a lion so there's gorgeous pictures, in gold on the brown leather cover, of a slave with broken shackles and a white man being pinned down by a lion.

I got a parrot carved out of clear quartz with his beak and tail carved out of agate and his crest carved out of adventurine, he's perched on a chunk of amethyst.

A beautifully detailed framed ink drawing of a birds eye view of a snake skeleton in a box, every rib every vertebra and every fang is perfectly detailed and the shadows are all exact. It must have taken someone so long to draw.

A lovely not-for-export rose medallion vase. It's very old and you can tell from the precision of the painting and the lack of a mark that it was made for the Chinese market, they kept the good stuff for themselves and exported the sloppily painted stuff. It likely came to New Zealand with a Chinese family intending to set up market gardens or go gold mining in the late 1800s.

A hand painted plate for hanging on the wall as art. It's a night time jungle scene of a toucan silhouetted against a double waterfall. I'm a biiiiiiiiiiig fan of jungle themed stuff and I love scenes of the jungle at night.

6 pink Arcoroc Rosaline wine glasses. I have collected Rosaline for 2 years and in that time I only ever found 1 wine glass, I've got champagne flutes, cocktail glasses, liqueur glasses, sherbet dishes, bowls in 4 different sizes, more plates than I need, but could I find wine glasses? Then there they were, directly at eye level, $2 each, a set of six. I almost couldn't believe it. I had looked in every single thrift store I'd been in for the last TWO years, and I go thrifting at least twice a week, and in that whole time I had only ever found the 1 single wine glass.

A vintage great white shark jaw. I collect oddities and it was a bucket list find. I didn't expect to ever find one in the wild and I figured if I ever found one online here in New Zealand, I'd be paying a bomb for it, they're illegal to sell here unless they're pre 2006. I walked into my favorite thrift store and embarrassed my mother (again) by squealing when I saw it - embarrassed as she was she still bought it for me for Christmas.

My #1 best find was exactly a year ago today on the 2nd of January 2022. I went to a fabulous vintage market and walked into a booth and just thought 'I'm going to spend $$$ here'. I bought the most stunningly gorgeous hand-painted, artist signed 1865, French porcelain jardiniere with iris' (a flower that has special meaning to me) painted on it and lion handles. It's gorgeous and I got it for a steal considering how old it is and how intact. It's gorgeous colors and exquisite painting.

I probably could do 22 if I sat here for long enough but I'll just add a few honorable mentions:

Brass butterfly candle holders

A taxidermy cane toad (the exact day I had put a display case I already owned onto a new shelf and decided it looked good there I just had to figure out the perfect thing to put in it)

A mid century Italian brass tortoise trinket box

2 lovely Victorian vases and a gorgeous Art Nouveau vase

The perfect plant pot to compliment the Victorian Majolica plant stand that I bought a couple of years ago that was missing it's original matching jardiniere. It's modern but the color is almost exact and the lines are similar enough that it looks like it belongs, especially since I have a lush boston fern in it covering most of the pot.

Lots and lots of the Sun Purple glass I collect, I've gotten really good at spotting it over the last year.

Several gorgeous antique books but especially a set of 3 1910 Natural History books with gorgeous illustrations that were so pretty I took photos of some of them and got them printed on coasters.

The largest paua (New Zealand native abalone) shell that I have ever seen.

A Japanese rip off of the Minton Majolica Monkey teapot, I doubt I'll ever see the Minton one in the wild but I'm very happy to own the bootleg version.

General Rules

No hate taken! I appreciate you asking.

I make writing prompts for other writers. I dont give names or genders to my characters so that others may use my prompts and ideas for their own stories. They can directly copy and paste my writing into their stories, or just use the idea for a scene. I explain this a little more at the beginning of my Author Description.

Some people in my ask box are looking for help. They might be stuck on a specific scenario or scene so they ask me for a little kick start. I don't know what/who they are writing about though. So everything is neutral unless the asker specifically states what/who they are writing for. Here's an example:

"Congrats on 200 follows! I've been following you from the beginning and I'm so happy your page is growing! My idea was a best friend pairing. One absolutely despises country music and the other loves it. I don't post on my page but I'm trying to get into writing some more. This is a scenario I've been struggling to write for a while. Can you help?"

I received that from a wonderful anon yesterday and will be posting my prompt response soon.

Part of the writers side of Tumblr consists of people just wanting to showcase their work/portfolio. But others are looking for inspiration, help, and honest feedback. We build each other up to be better artists and creators.

1. how do you feel about reblog karma? Personally, I just think it's nice manners to send something to a rp blog you follow when you reblog a meme off them. I know not every meme can be sent in, but if it's an ooc meme that allows the mun to answer a personal question or expand a headcanon for their character or even positivity meme then all it takes is a quick copy and paste.

I would much prefer that some memes were sent on occasion, instead of just continuously reblogging memes from me and never sending anything, as those situations often leave me thinking "does this person follow me because they do want to write or am I just another number to their growing following list?". Of course, everyone is free to have their own rules on how they'd prefer their blog to run. I just think it's good manners to respect it.

For example, if someone has in their rules that they don't mind having memes reblogged off them and stuff not sent in, then that's cool, but if someone else says in their rules that they don't want memes reblogged directly from them unless you send something in then I think you should respect that also. Just show kindness to one another. 2. is it hard for you to write with characters you don’t know/don’t know well? A little hard, but then again there are some ocs that I've never seen at all and so writing with them wouldn't be any different to writing with a canon character that I've never heard of. The only time it would be very difficult for me to write with a character I don't know well is if I'm given little to no information about them. So bios are really, really important.

I don't expect them to be insanely long like Johanna's but even a small para that explains who the character is, what they do, their personality, their story, etc, can help me a lot to set the scene and get an idea of what sort of plots can happen between the characters. Usually during that time I'll chat with the mun to get a better understanding of their character if I need help. 7. describe your favorite relationship dynamic. (can be any kind, platonic, romantic, familial, antagonistic, etc.) Oh my, you can't ask me to choose hahaha I have sooo many! I love them all: platonic, romantic, family, frienemies, corrupted, enemies, etc. It all depends on the characters and also the plot that comes out from them. I like having a variety to write cause sometimes I feel more inspired to write friendly platonic stuff, other times I'm feeling the more romantic stuff, and other times I just want the little banter dynamic.

Yeah of course! I knew absolutely nothing 8 months ago and now I'm constantly editing amvs! I'm gonna make this more of a general how-to for anyone else looking to start amv making.

Software:

there are lots of editors out there, but the most common ones i know of are Adobe Premiere and iMovie. Lots of people gain access to them via school or work, but if you're like me and don't have them available for free and can't justify paying for them, there are lots of great free editors! I personally use Lightworks because it's great for beginners and it's what I’m used to now. There's also:

Davinci resolve

Olive

Openshot

VSDC

Each one has different features and layouts, so maybe see which one seems best for you personally and try it out! I tried a couple of different editors before going back to Lightworks and they really do have their own pros and cons.

Clips:

Okay, so this is a bit of a broad topic since there are so many different ways people get clips. Personally, I have two sources: Netflix and this collection of all Destiel scenes without background noise. I know some people don’t have Netflix, but any method of screen-recording will do (and if you need specific help with screen-recording, let me know!). If that doesn’t work for you, you can always look up character/ship scene packs on both Tumblr and YouTube and download them!

Audio:

Now, I’m not sure how other other editors get their songs, but I just use a YouTube to MP3 converter, copy-paste the link of the song I want to use, and download the converted song. It’s quick and easy and is probably a big risk to my laptop, but it’s the only way I know how skdjkskdk.

Extras:

I always add subtitles to my videos now- they make it easier for dialogue to be heard/understood and also lyrics! For example, I do a lot of Lord Huron songs and some of their lyrics are basically incomprehensible unless you look them up, so having them there adds to the amv experience imo.

There's an amv blog, @spnamvs, dedicated to keeping an archive of spn amvs! It's great for checking to see if an amv has been done as well as getting your own amv out there (just tag it #spnamvarchive)!

There are three options for posting videos: directly on Tumblr, on Tumblr with a YouTube link, or an embedded YouTube video on Tumblr. Each one is equally easy to do (though the second one is the most work- more on that below) so it’s really a matter of personal preference.

Some editors have a YouTube account, some don’t, it’s entirely up to you! I didn’t have one for a long time, but I did start to have people asking if my videos were on YouTube, so I decided to make one. If it’s too much in the beginning, don’t worry about it, you can always upload them to YouTube later and edit your amv on here to include the link.

Tag lists and self-reblogging are also totally optional, but I personally recommend them. This fandom is so big and the timing of Tumblr is so finicky, you could have an amazing amv only get 10 notes because it’s posted at a weird time when people are offline.

Whatever editor you choose, don’t be afraid to mess around with it! Try different filters, different transitions, things like that. If you get frustrated, don’t hesitate to drop it for a bit before coming back. I still have an amv from MAY because I got stuck and didn’t want to ruin the song or the final product, so I dropped it. Inspiration comes and goes for these things so the last thing you want to do is push yourself when you’re uninspired.

This one seems cliche I know but!! Be proud of your videos!! I love my amvs! My sister and I love to go back and watch them and go insane over them! So many people think you have to hate your own work, but you’re allowed to be proud of it! You put time and effort into it and that’s not something to overlook. :)

There Came an Echo

In Season 2, there's a melancholy, relaxing song that plays in three different scenes: In S2E2 with Will/Mike's Crazy Together scene, then leading into Jonathan tucking Nancy into bed, and then again in S2E7 when Eleven and Kali are just meeting.

It's called Outside the Realm, and it's from a 2015 video game called There Came an Echo. Synopsis information isn't easily available online, but I just watched a playthrough of this game and wanted to summarize the bits that felt relevant both as context to this song and potentially implications to Stranger Things. While this post won't be a total synopsis of the game, spoilers are ahead (enough to ruin pretty much most of the interesting bits of the game) so be warned.

The Game

So again, this isn't a full synopsis, it's just the bits that I think are interesting or could relate to Stranger Things.

Basically the game revolves around this futuristic technology which is capable of capturing someone's brain state in detail and then at a later time reconstructing it (think 3D printing a brain into a body in the right configuration) such that the resulting clone believes it's the same person that was scanned. So effectively, it's technology that supports save/restore points in consciousness.

An organization in-game develops this technology and then uses it (first just through simulation) to raise a child with the perfect upbringing - whenever anything goes wrong, they just save/restore until it goes right. The end result (which they do 3D print into a body) is this super genius.

Unfortunately, unbeknownst to everyone, they're living inside a massive simulation ("The Realm" of the song's title) and simulating this level of intelligence unchecked would cause such a massive power drain that the simulation would have to be shut down. So some outside forces basically ruin that person's life to reduce the energy drain (saving the other life forms in the simulation from shutting it down).

At some point they escape the simulation and meet the steward of it, who is a creature from some ancient civilization which, filled with existential dread, has basically created lots of simulations to try to bring about other intelligences and add meaning to their world. The creature is kind but fair, and basically a goddess from their perspective. The song plays when they're outside the simulation interacting with this creature.

Finally, the game flirts with religious topics (and honestly, not very intelligently in some ways - it was pretty offensive towards atheists in particular). It dealt a bit with souls, because of course that's the question with this new technology: is the clone lesser because it (the characters assume) doesn't have a soul?

...

Possible Ties to Stranger Things

Honestly, I mostly don't think the game ties in much here, unless I'm missing something. There was however one line in the game that jumped out at me in big, bold letters:

"You can copy her cells, her brainwaves, but she isn't the same. She's just... an echo." - Grace, There Came an Echo

When the characters learn that one of them was this super genius that was 3D printed after being cloned over and over, a couple of them aren't too impressed. Several characters don't think that the clone is the "same" as the restored creature, that it's worth less (because of it lacking a soul seems to be the reasoning behind it).

This is especially interesting to me because even before I got why the game was titled "There Came an Echo", I was thinking that "echo" is a perfect way to describe how I see Eleven's sometimes empty-feeling imitation of others. Like there's something missing there, like she's constrained to produce only what she hears (like a Kenku), in a way that I don't think is simply because of her overly restricted upbringing (though I totally accept I could be wrong, it just feels like a hint).

Then combining it with my theory that Eleven came from the Upside Down, that she potentially died in the water tank, and her psychic reflection became real by passing through the Gate just like the Demogorgon, completely fits with the theme of this game. The version of Eleven we know best clearly has the memories of the Eleven from the tank, but I'm suspecting it's a copy, and isn't completely the same. That the quote above directly fits Eleven.

I guess time will tell...

Usage of Beyond the Realm

I don't however see a tie between the video game and the meaning of the song they used in the show. Perhaps Kali is closest to tying into it - the goddess's name is Iris in the game, and right when the song starts in S2E7, Kali's imaginary butterfly cycles through the colors of the rainbow on its wings (yet another rainbow appearance in Stranger Things). But that's only 1 of the 3 times the song was used, and evidently not the usage the show cared most about:

"It's funny because the show is developed under a code name and while the description of the usage is in the contract, it's really super vague, so even with 'context' I didn't really know anything. Stuff like 'two friends are talking and comfort each other.' So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I learned that the mystery show was actually Stranger Things 2."

If I were to summarize what the three scenes have in common, it seems to be about like someone's missing half. There's also a longing there I think. And there's ambiguity (in this context alone) with Byler vs Mileven there, because the song kicks on when Mike is speaking about Eleven.

Runaan, the Dragonblade

I woke from a dream this morning where I figured out half of this and came up with the rest while I mulled it over, and now I have a new angsty headcanon: Runaan was raised by Avizandum and trained to fight by Skywings at the Storm Spire.

Runaan is a soft elf who's learned to adopt Hard Mode at a moment's notice. Avizandum is a rat bastard who truly thought of humans as lesser beings. Runaan's Hard Mode and his attitude that humans are liars, nothing in them worth sparing, etc etc, is all learned behavior. It makes sense that all his harsh attitudes are part of his assassin training, since Ethari and Lujanne don't share them. And we’ve seen how certain other old dragons feel about humans. Considering that Xadia once wanted to wipe them all out, and that the dragons live by far the longest, it seems to me that the source of prejudice against humans lies with the dragons and is taught to the elves over and over with each new generation.

Then there's that casual line in the Book One novelization where we learn that Xadia wouldn't necessarily choose to avenge Avizandum because he was a morally gray bastard, but it would absolutely cry for justice over Zym being killed. That scene is Rayla's, and all her assassin information comes from Runaan. Bitter about his upbringing at Avizandum's claws, maybe? I don't blame him.

If Avizandum really did raise Runaan and see to his training, then S1E1′s title “Echoes of Thunder” just keeps having more layers to it, doesn’t it? Gosh. Runaan is connected to so many parts of the plot, to so many characters, but behind him lies Thunder. Just like Aaravos lies behind Viren and his own web of connections.

I keep trying to puzzle out Runaan's scars, where and why he got them. This headcanon has yet another guess. See, Ethari is eager to use the Sun's Tears salve to keep Runaan healing quickly--he hates to see his husband hurt, of course he does, he loves him! So I don't think it's very likely that Runaan got those scars after he married Ethari. And then there's his bio clue about "learned to put his mission above all else". If you learn something, that's a lesson, and lessons usually are learned early, especially when assassin training begins before you can even walk.

So if his training supervisor was Avizandum, and Runaan wasn't hard enough during training... I can see it. Typical dragon behavior, a little smack of the tail. It wouldn’t do much damage to another dragon, not with their thick scaled hides. But used on elves who are short and tiny and delicate in comparison? Ouch.

None of Runaan’s scars or even damage from his fight in Harrow’s chamber, none of it is on his back. Runaan never turns his back unless he’s spinning with his blades out. So whatever hit him, he was facing it directly. And if it was Avizandum’s judgment, then he stood there and saw it coming and took it like the stoic Moonshadow he is.

This poor angst-ridden elf, god.

I'm dancing around it here. But Avizandum losing control of Zym was a good thing, and Viren interrupting his hatching storm was beneficial for Zym and therefore all of Xadia - once the Dragaang got to hatch him, anyway. Because however much Avizandum cried at dying and being unable to reach Zym, whether from love or fear or loss of control, he would've raised him to be hard and trained him to be ruthless. Just like Runaan.

Zym was spared all that. But maybe Runaan wasn't. Maybe it's tradition for the Dragon Throne to raise and train each assassin leader, and that's where the blood promise thing comes in. A Moonshadow elf, separate from their people, surrounded by dragons and Skywings, needs to bond with someone. So they make the promise, swear their honor and loyalty in service to the one being who has seen to their education and whatever guidance and comforts they are given in life. And then they go home to the Silvergrove and bind others to the will of the Dragon King.

I had a really old headcanon once that Runaan was raised by Skywings, lol. This version is cooler though. It's just the way he fights. It's so aerial! And all the spinning! Everything about Skywings being strong and fast really just adds more strength to this headcanon. Rayla believes Runaan is the best assassin, and he's described as basically unstoppable. A Moonshadow who fights like a Skywing would have serious advantages over most other combatants. Maybe this will be one more connection between Runaan and Callum someday? How fun would that be? Runaan actually being able to train Callum in Skywing aerial techniques to some degree. Whether he would... ehh. I could see him silently adjusting Callum’s elbow or something and nodding for him to try again, though. Perhaps in a “but I doubt you’ll get it--oh huh, look at that” sort of way. Which would be awesome all around, tbh.

Unfortunately, if Runaan were trained by Skywings, he would have thought himself slow and sloppy during training. It probably influenced his constant training regimen in the Silvergrove. If he trained all the time, he'd at least get closer to Skywing standards. But maybe he still lives with a deep-seated sense of inadequacy for not being as swift and light on his feet as his trainers. And I can see Avizandum allowing that mentality, and even encouraging it, since it would urge a young Runaan to constantly push himself harder.

Now, let me headcanon about Rayla: if she were the child that Runaan chose to follow him as the assassin leader, there is no way in hell he'd let her go back to the Storm Spire for instruction at Avizandum’s claws. So maybe he told Lain and Tiadrin what happened to him, or maybe they already knew. Heck, maybe they were there with him, or maybe Lain was and that’s why he’s Runaan’s best friend. In any case, no one wanted to put Rayla through that, so they all managed a compromise. Lain and Tiadrin went in her place and served on the Dragonguard. And Runaan got to keep Rayla away from Avizandum.

He was so gentle with her when he raised her, it kills me. The irony that he was still training her to be an assassin despite his own history is very deep. But I don't think anyone knows how to get out of that one yet. Still, he raised her softly and with encouraging guidance, not with tail smacking. Somehow, that sense of "I'll never be good enough" did carry over, though... Rayla really is as perceptive as her mother sometimes. She picks up things Runaan never meant to teach her. Luckily that also includes kissing techniques.

Runaan helped Rayla avoid his harsh upbringing at the Storm Spire, but he raised her so softly that she got him captured. He keeps using those Skywing moves like mental chess to try to get around the dangers in his life and protect his friends and family, but the board is set against him. And I'm guessing the only way to win is not to play.

tl;dr: Runaan was raised by dragons and trained by Skywings and it shows, but he didn't want Rayla raised the same way because it was traumatic and scarring, so her parents went to the Storm Spire instead of her. And everything still fell apart because the system is broken.

Extra hc’s:

Runaan got over his fear of heights and death at the same time because Avizandum made him jump off the Spire repeatedly, and he’d have to be chill and calm and accept his fate, and when he was at peace with it, then a Skywing would catch him.

Runaan gave Hendyr his cheek scars for catching him too early one time. Dude was trying to help, and Runaan was trying to be perfect, and it ended with shades of Amaya.

Rayla throwing herself off the pinnacle when she killed Viren was something she may have heard about before, and once again she’s copying Runaan.

There’s a Moonshadow room at the Spire because there’s always a Moonshadow there for training, and that’s where Lain and Tiadrin were living: in Runaan’s childhood room. They’ll know him so much better after having spent time there.

Runaan’s got chronic stress about messy windswept hair now, and that’s why Ethari does his hair for him every morning with those dexterous hands of his, to make sure Runaan feels calm and ordered and as far from the Storm Spire in his mind as possible.

This may bring some controversy, but I find Claude underwhelming lord out of the three lords...Maybe it's because I played BL and CF first which were very dramatic since it's between step siblings and their ideals clashing while Claude is changing the system between Fodlan and Alymra if I remember correctly, but I remember telling some friends he wasn't my favorite and they were legitimately confused at my opinion for him since they played his route first, I never said I hated him, just not my favorite.

Hell among my group of friends, I'm the only one who is a huge Dimitri fan among Edelgard and Claude fans so it's hard to stand up for myself when it comes to 3H lords.

I don’t blame you at all for finding him underwhelming, anon.

For one, his route’s structure is basically Silver Snow with most of his scenes being pushed off screen or given little importance in comparison, with Nemesis being slapped on in the end in order to not make it completely copy paste. As for what his story is about, it’s about his status as an outsider looking inward to discover Fodlan’s secrets. He sneaks around digging up as much as he can so he can understand the land’s history and why it is the way it is; most importantly, why it’s so adverse to outsiders, something he cares a lot about considering he is one.

The problem is that given that he was built as an outsider, unless you’re playing his route, his importance wanes considerably (and even on his route he was kind of shafted by sharing the spotlight with half of Fodlan’s history reveal). That’s already a problem Rhea and Dimitri have on a lot of routes too, and they are directly involved with some of the conflict.

I’m in the same boat where I played CF and AM before VW, and I had the same issues where I kind of struggled to see why or how Claude was important to everything as a whole, even to the point where I found it hard to see how he was on a similar playing field as Edelgard and Dimitri. Playing VW helped, but also didn’t help at the same time.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I like Claude but his whole outsider schtick was kind of doomed from the start in a game with multiple routes with one of the other house leaders taking the main spotlight for the entire game.
