Sri Lankan Fairies and Senegalese Goddesses: Mixing Mythology as a Mixed Creator
[Note: this archive ask was submitted before the Masterpost rules took effect in 2023. The ask has been abridged for clarity.]
@reydjarinkenobi asked:
Hi, I’m half Sri Lankan/half white Australian, second gen immigrant though my mum moved when she was a kid. My main character for my story is a mixed demigod/fae. [...] Her bio mum is essentially a Scottish/Sri Lankan fairy and her other bio mum (goddess) is a goddess of my own creation, Nettamaar, who’s name is derived from [...] Wolof words [...]. The community of mages that she presided over is from the South Eastern region of Senegal [...] In the beginning years of European imperialism, the goddess basically protected them through magic and by blessing a set of triplets effectively cutting them off from the outside world for a few centuries [...] I was unable to find a goddess that fit the story I wanted to tell [...] and also couldn’t find much information on the internet for local gods, which is why I have created my own. I know that the gods in Hinduism do sort of fit into [the story] but my Sri Lankan side is Christian and I don’t feel comfortable representing the Hindu gods in the way that I will be this goddess [...]. I wanted to know if any aspect of the community’s history is problematic as well as if I should continue looking further to try and find an African deity that matched my narrative needs? I was also worried that having a mixed main character who’s specifically half black would present problems as I can’t truly understand the black experience. I plan on getting mixed and black sensitivity readers once I finish my drafts [...] I do take jabs at white supremacy and imperialism and I I am planning to reflect my feelings of growing up not immersed in your own culture and feeling overwhelmed with what you don’t know when you get older [...]. I’m sorry for the long ask but I don’t really have anyone to talk to about writing and I’m quite worried about my story coming across as insensitive or problematic because of cultural history that I am not educated enough in.
Reconciliation Requires Research
First off: how close is this world’s history to our own, omitting the magic? If you’re aiming for it to be essentially parallel, I would keep in mind that Senegal was affected by the spread of Islam before the Europeans arrived, and most people there are Muslim, albeit with Wolof and other influences.
About your Scottish/Sri Lankan fairy character: I’ll point you to this previous post on Magical humanoid worldbuilding, Desi fairies as well as this previous post on Characterization for South Asian-coded characters for some of our commentary on South Asian ‘fae’. Since she is also Scottish, the concept can tie back to the Celtic ideas of the fae.
However, reconciliation of both sides of her background can be tricky. Do you plan on including specific Sri Lankan mythos into her heritage? I would tread carefully with it, if you plan to do so. Not every polytheistic culture will have similar analogues that you can pull from.
To put it plainly, if you’re worried about not knowing enough of the cultural histories, seek out people who have those backgrounds and talk to them about it. Do your research thoroughly: find resources that come from those cultures and read carefully about the mythos that you plan to incorporate. Look for specificity when you reach out to sensitivity readers and try to find sources that go beyond a surface-level analysis of the cultures you’re looking to portray.
~ Abhaya
I see you are drawing on Gaelic lore for your storytelling. Abhaya has given you good links to discussions we’ve had at WWC and the potential blindspots in assuming, relative to monotheistic religions like Christianity, that all polytheistic and pluralistic lore is similar to Gaelic folklore. Fae are one kind of folklore. There are many others. Consider:
Is it compatible? Are Fae compatible with the Senegalese folklore you are utilizing?
Is it specific? What ethnic/religious groups in Senegal are you drawing from?
Is it suitable? Are there more appropriate cultures for the type of lore you wish to create?
Remember, Senegalese is a national designation, not an ethnic one, and certainly not a designation that will inform you with respect to religious traditions. But more importantly:
...Research Requires Reconciliation
My question is why choose Senegal when your own heritage offers so much room for exploration? This isn’t to say I believe a half Sri-Lankan person shouldn’t utilize Senegalese folklore in their coding or vice-versa, but, to put it bluntly, you don’t seem very comfortable with your heritage. Religions can change, but not everything cultural changes when this happens. I think your relationship with your mother’s side’s culture offers valuable insight to how to tackle the above, and I’ll explain why.
I myself am biracial and bicultural, and I had to know a lot about my own background before I was confident using other cultures in my writing. I had to understand my own identity—what elements from my background I wished to prioritize and what I wished to jettison. Only then was I able to think about how my work would resonate with a person from the relevant background, what to be mindful of, and where my blindspots would interfere.
I echo Abhaya’s recommendation for much, much more research, but also include my own personal recommendation for greater self-exploration. I strongly believe the better one knows oneself, the better they can create. It is presumptuous for me to assume, but your ask’s phrasing, the outlined plot and its themes all convey a lack of confidence in your mixed identity that may interfere with confidence when researching and world-building. I’m not saying give up on this story, but if anxiety on respectful representation is a large barrier for you at the moment, this story may be a good candidate for a personal project to keep to yourself until you feel more ready.
(See similar asker concerns here: Running Commentary: What is “ok to do” in Mixed-Culture Supernatural Fiction, here: Representing Biracial Black South American Experiences and here: Am I fetishizing my Japanese character?)
- Marika.
Start More Freely with Easy Mode
Question: Why not make a complete high-fantasy universe, with no need of establishing clear real-world parallels in the text? It gives you plenty of leg room to incorporate pluralistic, multicultural mythos + folklore into the same story without excessive sweating about historically accurate worldbuilding.
It's not a *foolproof* method; even subtly coded multicultural fantasy societies like Avatar or the Grishaverse exhibit certain harmful tropes. I also don't know if you are aiming for low vs high fantasy, or the degree of your reliance on real world culture / religion / identity cues.
But don't you think it's far easier for this fantasy project to not have the additional burden of historical accuracy in the worldbuilding? Not only because I agree with Mod Marika that perhaps you seem hesitant about the identity aspect, but because your WIP idea can include themes of othering and cultural belonging (and yes, even jabs at supremacist institutions) in an original fantasy universe too. I don't think I would mind if I saw a couple of cultural markers of a Mughal Era India-inspired society without getting a full rundown of their agricultural practices, social conventions and tax systems, lol.
Mod Abhaya has provided a few good resources about what *not* to do when drawing heavily from cultural coding. With that at hand, I don't think your project should be a problem if you simply make it an alternate universe like Etheria (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), Inys (The Priory of the Orange Tree) or Earthsea (the Earthsea series, Ursula K. Le Guin). Mind you, we can trace the analogues to each universe, but there is a lot of freedom to maneuver as you wish when incorporating identities in original fantasy. And of course, multiple sensitivity readers are a must! Wishing you the best for the project.

pile 6 you guys went out with a bang! This one caught me off guard! Some of you could be looking for closure/Truth in a situation, but your Sacral wants you to see your self worth first Sometimes you need to leave first before you get closure. When your constantly around a certain group of people it can be hard for you to see how they conditioned you. You need to take yourself out of situation to a different perspective that'll be when you get the truth. Your sanity/ mental is the most important thing don't keep digging a grave for yourself by staying. Love yourself and leave sis. Your Sacral needs healing whoever this person is has definitely taken a toll on your self worth and your self care. I was hearing stitches by Shawn Mendes Go listen to it because it has a message for you and also self care by Savannah Cristina. You seem like a great person but don't let other takes advantage of you I think this person messed with your intuition and that led to your womb turning against them because they disconnected you from that by telling you whatever lies. You could have had issues while having sex with this person. This is why your no longer happy in this situation. No more mind games connect with your womb and forgive yourself for not listening to your womb. She is your first brain. Your womb is the biggest factor in your body as a woman. She'll always send you the signs first as cautions!

You never grew tired of this.
The long pathways of sand that stretched far around the coast of the island, tucked underneath the shade of many trees. The sleek texture of the leaves beneath your fingers as you foraged for any fruit that would be viable. The feeling of his gaze as you went about your tasks.
It was your job to look after the resources of your people, a people that dwelled on an island safe from the hands of the outside world. One much like the African nation of Wakanda, hidden to all outsiders; though that never stop him from coming. Everyday you’d stroll around the shores of your quaint island and everyday he’d make it a point to see you: It was from him that you even knew what Wakanda was. You weren’t the kind of goddess to meddle in the business of other nations, so a lot of your knowledge about the outside world was through what he told you. On his visits he’d bring stories of foreign lands along with more gifts than you could manage. Necklaces, gold, Talokan’s finest pearls littered your hut. Despite your best efforts, he insisted you accept his gifts and you never had the heart to turn them away. He liked to jest that one day he’d bring enough jewels to fill up your entire island, to let anyone who sailed by know just how much he cared for you.
“Must you always watch from the waters?” Your voice broke the air in what sounded like but a whisper. You stood just off the edge of the sand, waves flowing gently at your shores and making ripples as they returned to the ocean. He was there and you were sure of it. A gentle breeze made its way through the trees, taking pieces of your knit skirt with it. Comfortable silence settled between the two of you as you waited for him to reveal himself and it wasn’t long before he did. He heard you, he always did. His black hair stuck to his face as he rose from the waters, bronzed and covered in heavy jewelry. Before you was K'uk'ulkan in all his glory.
“Ma'lob Ja'atskab K'iin, in yakunaj” (Good morning, my love)
He knew you couldn’t understand what he was saying and yet he refused to stop speaking his language to you. Maybe the absence of understanding was apart of why he did it. Maybe it allowed him to be comfortable saying the things he wouldn’t dare slip off his tongue if he knew you’d understand.
“K'uk'ulkan”. His name fell from your mouth with ease, the way it had thousands of times before. You never tired of seeing your water god, not when he came to your shores looking the way he did. Namor sauntered slowly up to you with a small brown box cradled in between his fingers. Those green shorts left little to the imagination, not that you were complaining.
“How have you been” he asked genuinely, eyes finding yours as he slides his had gingerly around your waist. His fingers moved cautiously around the gems of your waist beads, testing how far you’d let him get as if he had never touched you before. It wasn’t until he was close enough that you could see the state he was in. Battered, bruised, littered in cuts.
He hadn’t visited you in a week which was unlike him. In the event that his duties as king would tear him from you for longer than he liked, he would always make sure you knew. Worry crept up your spine when he hadn’t paid you a visit in 3 days time and you waited desperately for any sort of sign. A smoke signal, a message in a bottle, anything, but nothing ever came. You suspected something dubious was going on with him. Your suspicion was correct.
“What happened to you”
You saw the way his eyebrows raised slightly, as if he didn’t expect you to ask.
“What would it matter if I told you, in yakunaj”
“You leave without a trace in the ocean and you expect me to not want answers? Do you think just because you’ve returned that I’m not owed an explanation?”
You had a point, he couldn’t deny.
“I had a run in with the Wakandans, their new queen is a formidable warrior. I have done things I don’t know if I’m proud of. Things I’d rather not tell in fear you would look at me differently”.
“Does war follow your actions K'uk'ulkan?” You had to know your chances of loosing him. The brown in his eyes soften as he gazed upon you, his hands gripping your waist with more force as if he’s scared you’ll blow away with the wind. The sun made the brown of your skin dance beneath his finger tips, a sight he wouldn’t trade for the world. To him, your beauty could not be matched by any woman, land or sea.
“Not anytime in the near future. Not with the Wakandans. Despite my wrongdoings I have secured an ally for Talokan”. His response seemed to calm you and he took notice of this. As much as you tried to deny it, you did have feelings for him.
This encouraged him to lean into the dip of your neck, inhaling your scent. Honey and mangos with a hint of cinnamon, a smell he would burn into every fiber of his brain had the heavens above allowed it. Opening the box he slowly removed its contents, a beautiful Amber necklace with a pendant surrounded by Talokanil pearls. You didn’t flinch as his wet hands turned you away from him, moving to clip the necklace on with ease. You saw the admiration in his eyes as he scanned down the valley of your breast to look at where the necklace rested. It was beautiful against your complexion and sat comfortably on the knit bra like top you wore. To colonizers your dress was primitive, to him, it was beauty in it’s purest form.
“I count every hour until I am able to see you again. Will you not return to Talokan with me to save me of the pain of having to live without you”.
Would you go with him? You truly didn’t know. Your duty was to your people, to your island, who were you to abandon them? The gods had given you life to serve the islanders and your power of growing plants on a whim served the people well. At a moments notice you could conjure up rows of fruit trees to feed the village. Despite this, you couldn’t help your mind when it wondered to thoughts about what it would be like being his queen. Adored by him and his people. He had walls covered in tapestry depicting you, what would it be like to wake up to them in his embrace every morning? The feeling of him kissing up the side of your neck pulled you out of your thoughts. As much as you’d love to spend every waking moment like this, you knew it wasn’t possible.
“We both know that cannot happen. I have a duty to my people and yours deserve a queen that is one of them”. The words left your mouth so quietly you had to second guess if you had actually said them. His response assured you that you did. That wasn’t the answer he wanted.
“What would lead you to think you are not one of us? You can breathe water like us, swim like us, eat like us. I’d never let the name Namor come from you, is that not testament enough to your place in my life?”
“I am neither your enemy nor your people, what am I to call you? Surely the better of the two names”
“In yakunaj would suffice”. A smile graced his face as he pulled away from your neck. Watching as small purple bruises burned into the brown of your neck.
“I will not call you a name if I don’t know what it means”
“And yet you call me K'uk'ulkan without a care in the world. Do you trust that it’s meaning is good? Or is it that you trust me, lòol (flower)”
In all honesty, you didn’t have an answer. He must have taken your silence as confirmation of your trust as he worked to push you up against the mango tree behind the two of you. He did it with more force than intended but you were quick to catch the mango as it fell, not without accidentally bruising it. It’s juices flowed onto your hands and covered you fingers with its sticky substance. Namor’s eyes darkened as he watched you attempt to clean the mango’s residue from your hands after placing it to the ground. He gently gripped your hand and brought it up to his mouth, eyes meeting yours. He began to slowly suck the juices from your skin in a way that set your body a blaze. Everything about the scene was seductive and you enjoyed it more than you felt you should have. You tried your best to mask the shock as he slowly dropped to his knees before you.
“Maybe I need to use a different approach to make you change your mind”

Lets Go BAAAAAAABY!!!
Yk the drill
Dividers by: @benkeibear
Song: Gonna Love Me- Teyana Taylor
This one is for the Loc girlies because I have Locs. I’m a girlie, I have the power to write and I don’t see enough Loc girlie post. Also, just kinda Black girlie pops, but know that the reader has locs, and that’s the focus.
335 word (we're keeping her short today)
Tumblr media
Boyfriend!Toji loves yours locs.
Boyfriend!Toji loves seeing you get them re-twisted and he’ll buy jewelry for your hair.
Boyfriend!Toji now knows where things are in the Beauty Supply Store. He knows where to find the loc gel, your lashes, and the lip gloss that makes your lips so perfectly shiny.
Boyfriend!Toji loves that you always want to go out after you get your hair re-twisted. He always wants to show you off.
Boyfriend!Toji knows how pretty you feel with lashes, acrylic nails, a new dress and your locs freshly parted and twisted, so he takes you to a club.
Boyfriend!Toji loves seeing your brown skin glow under the flashing lights in the club and knows how pretty you are, so he spends his entire night making sure no guy even looks at you for more than 2 seconds
Boyfriend!Toji won’t pull your hair when you fuck if you just got your hair done. He knows you like pain, but he also understands how much that will hurt
Boyfriend!Toji learned how to do different styles with your locs. He learned how to do a hot oil treatment and he learned how to oil your scalp when you need it.
Boyfriend!Toji understands how you feel when your hair isn’t re-twisted. He understands that you can get kinda insecure about it. So he makes sure he reassures you that you’re still so beautiful. He tells you how he still loves your hair, even when it’s not twisted.
Boyfriend!Toji knows how good a hair massage feels for you. He gives them to you when you’re stressed.
Boyfriend!Toji loves when you wear waist beads. It could be a simple outfit are something more done up, he doesn’t care. Seeing those beads just drape on your waist makes him want to go crazy. He loves fucking you with your waist beads on, seeing how they bounce to the rhythm of his thrust.
Boyfriend!Toji understands you’re expensive, and he’s willing to pay for all of it because he loves his African Goddess.

What does your character's story have to teach readers? What does your character have to teach us?
oh my
I usually turn straight to the proverb of " The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth. " it's an African proverb that has always resonated with her lore right from the very beginning. The unfortunate time of living, unfortunate role of her gender, unfortunate soul forced to share with an old, eldritch goddess ― the unfortunate rules in place by the Kingdom. It's not only a 'hey you cant do that' rule, either. Khrosteia is the goddess of Alchemy, the one who shares her soul, her precious reincarnation, is naturally and powerfully GIFTED. She is born into a world and time and place in which she cannot use alchemy because she is a Woman. It is not a punishment that prevents women from learning alchemy, it is death. The death of her. Her family, children, animals, homes, any ties bound by the family name. It is only for 'gods chosen oathbringers' to learn.
Qistina's plight and subsequent flight from the kingdom itself, leaving it in bloody ashes, shows both victim and victor of that patriarchal Kingdom. The punishment for her ambition, the result of that visceral femininity unchecked and unburdened. There is no real good lesson to learn from her, as she is someone who allowed her justifiable RAGE to slaughter whatever stood in her path of freedom. The villagers tried to kill her, as it was her own Father that was tied closely to them all, and so she who was so coldly shunned chose to immolate them all in return.
embrace those that hurt with love.

-Loki making sure that they voice how beautiful you are, writing you the cutes notes and poems and leaving them all around objects you use the most or placing them on your pillow

-What you love the most is when the two of you are either cuddled up on the couch or in your shared bedroom and the God of Mischief takes the time to run their hands all over your body, gently cupping, squeezing and caressing your soft and delicate skin, gently patting your butt or big thighs all while whispering how much they love you in your ear
-They don’t miss any of your intimate parts, making sure that your wonderful breasts are given all the attention they need and deserve
-When the two of you are in bed, it only takes a few minutes before you’re lying on your back, your nightdress/shirt already thrown on the floor and your legs being spread, Loki’s fingers spoiling your wet folds with his thumb and index finger while whispering how sensational you feel, taste and smell
-It gets to the point where you can’t go through the day without the sensual and delicate touches of your love, craving them after a shitty ass day or needing them when you reach a low point and no one can lift your spirits besides Loki
-Your confidence also shoots through the roof which Loki loves witnessing and being proud that he’s a good influence to you. They can’t help but smile and grin when his compliments and touches encourage you to dress however you want, do whatever you want and stick up for yourself when someone feels the need to rude or disrespectful to you (not that Loki wouldn't even hesitate to defend you but he knows that you are a beautiful black woman who can stand their ground)
-A part of you actually loves the fact that Loki can’t keep his hands off you, he doesn’t feel any shame or shyness when the two are in public; When they want to give you a sensual kiss, he will god dammit!

Hi, not to be annoying but sometimes when you post reference of pictures of y/n it's kinda of not very representative cause she looks like a model and many of us don't look like that. I love your stories though ❤
You're not annoying. I understand what you're saying to an extent, so here's how I will respond now that I'm fresh from a nap.
I enjoy creating graphics/aesthetics these days to go along with what I post. Whether it seems like it or not, I tend to put a lot of time and thought into these creations. Sometimes they come out great, other times they are 'meh'. But they're mine from the tornado that is my imagination.
I try to use images of black women with different skin tones (for representation) who are either looking to the side, or looking away, or covering their face. Sometimes I use the backs of their heads. Sometimes I add extra shadows or crop their faces myself.
Sometimes I lose myself down the proverbial rabbit hole and spend hours trying to find the *right* image, or saving images I think will be useful or act as muses for my creativity in the future.
Do I look like a lot of these women? Nope. Is my hair natural? For now. But I never have that whole perfectly coifed African Goddess look going on. Am I sassy like Y/N? Sometimes. Would I ever be brave enough to do something like a boudoir shoot? Nah. Too much of me to nip, tuck, and suck in. I'm also not dating Chris Evans or Andy Barber or some big hotshot attorney. Nor do I have children with them.
This girl (me, pictured below) doesn't have a lot of what Reader or Y/N does. I just let the character take up space in my brain while I sit at a keyboard. And then I play pretend.
I know this response is getting long and I don't want to risk sounding defensive or preachy. Apologies if I've already crossed that threshold. But it is hard not to be defensive of your own stuff. So I'll end with this:
We come to Tumblr to lurk, read, or write (or some combination thereof) because it's an escape for most of us. We get to be silly and creative and all that good stuff. We also take the writers we support, the series we allow ourselves to become invested in, and the content on our own blogs seriously.
Because we care. I'm assuming you care about what my goofy self posts, and the series or characters themselves, to some extent. I'm grateful that it matters to you. And I'm thankful that you reached out. It sucks that we can't always make everyone happy. You can put all of the thought in the world into something and sometimes it's still just not enough. I do want people to be able to see themselves in my stories, but I can't win every time. Which sucks but...
I'm not knocking you, friend. So please don't take it that way. But I'm going to keep doing this in some form because it's my blog, I find it fun, and because (on here) it's all about using our imaginations. I'm sorry if that means potentially losing you as a Reader.
But at the end of the day, I'm just a basketcase of a girl, sitting in front of a computer, staring at pictures of Chris Evans, trying to forget about the dumpster fire that is the real world as it burns to ash right outside my window. *Shrugs*
Tumblr media
Hey. ^^ This is me btw when I have to "people" (read: look presentable). Not that it matters. I look nothing like how I try to ambiguously describe the reader. Well, wait. Reader is short. And so am I. And we're both some shade of brown. That's all I've got folks. Back to working on "Brat Games".

Blurb: In an unsteady time of peace following a generations-long war, Mila, an 18 year old farmer, finds herself unexpectedly thrust into the world of nobility upon discovering she can wield a power thought only to be possessed by the upper class. Struggling to find her feet in this new environment and shunned by those around her, she juggles learning about her abilities, her identity, and the truth of the war behind the propaganda. When her equally ostracized mentor gets a tip about a plot to assassinate one of the country’s leaders, it’s down the dysfunctional teacher with a shady past and his apprentice who can barely control her powers to prevent the country from falling back into conflict.
Setting:
Magic: Low fantasy with scarce/rare magic. The magic is called forging and is basically element magic but I wanted to explain all the hand movements people do with those so I incorporated more rules and ‘science’ to make it more rigid. there are ten basic ‘facets’ (air fire water stone earth wood iron copper blood bone) and people can be born knowing any number, or special different ones, but it gets exponentially rarer with more facets. the magic is genetic and mostly confined to the upper class and has become a way of oppressing the lower class. this actually gets addressed rather than mentioned then ignored (cough, korra, cough)
Culture: The culture of the main country, Odrad, is based on african, middle eastern, and mediterranean cultures, with a bit of southern asian. However most of that is simply due to the setting being dry and hot, and so developing dark skin and loose clothing and making most things out of stone and plaster due to the scarcity of wood. Religion is polytheistic based around an all mother type goddess and the god of the sun with the biggest festival being the start of the wet season. Other important countries include Acrait, the biggest on the continent, which is more south asian based, and Sheiro, which is steppe-type culture. Odrad is an ex-monarchy ruled by a council that has morphed into capitalism and feudalism’s horrid little baby with ‘magnates’ (a new branding for nobles) controlling everything.

I decided upon the name when I was thinking about the first song I listened by myself when my friend recommended me to Ateez, Star1117. 🗣️
Something had drawn me to it, the title sounded like it was gonna be beautiful and something I’d enjoy, and my instincts were right. 🧞‍♂️
As I listened to the song, I thought, who could they be talking about? They sound like they really love this person. (even though I didn’t know what the hell they were saying LMFAO) 🥶
But the melody and they way they sang so softly and belted out those notes, I knew it was a strong song with deep emotion, and the “forever you are my star” line made me think it was about someone they really cared for. 😭
I immediately searched the songs meaning and saw it was for their fans. I never got into K-pop fully but I always wanted to and had a few songs on my playlist. I decided Ateez was the first group I was gonna Stan based on that song alone. I wanted to be part of a fandom whose artist love their fans so dearly that they made a song dedicated to them. 💙
Fever came from another Ateez song, it just came to mind and I wanted to include it. 👨‍🎤 I had to add less because it emphasizes the wish of my stories to have a pleasant experience rather than a bizarre/ disturbing one.
Dreams comes from me just being delusional lol. I tend to wander off out no where in my mind coming up with all kinds of scenarios. So much to the point it’s just a coping mechanism for my insomnia. 🐳
It actually helped in some ways. I can sleep peacefully now, maybe too much because I don’t ever wanna wake up. What can I say, I guess I have an addiction. 🌀
Plus I don’t think it’s going away anytime soon so enjoy the ride 🚙
The theme for my page is a fantasy dream world where all your desires come true (i.e. requests or messages), the theme color being blue. The color blue represents calmness, imagination, and spirituality. 🚹
I want to make my page for my black!readers because we really don’t get a lot of representation 🥲🥲🥲
BUT sometimes I might write generally, so just to be clear I’m not discriminating and I want to include everyone!
BUT for my black!readers just know that this is a safe space 💙
PLEASE DO NOT COPY MY ORIGINAL WORKS, reblogs are appreciated and accepted. Stealing and modifying my work or publishing out on other platforms is not. 🖌️
Lastly I will also be attaching to music to each of my works to get y’all in the mood ( ͡❛ 👅 ͡❛) I love music, I literally can not live without it just like I can’t live without my “exciting imagination”. Also I thought it would be a fun addition, so I hope y’all don’t mind! 😰

Looking For Beta Readers!
Tumblr media
Côries + Anima is a queer, young adult/low fantasy experimental book I've been working on for 5 years. I'm looking for beta/content readers before I try publishing because I'm still in college and want to get ahead as much as I can! Please DM me if interested, or help me get traction so I can find more people! I really want a diverse book like this for all the kids like me who couldn't always see themselves, and I really want to change the way we view literature in the 21st century!
SYNOPSIS
The world ended a minute ago. You just missed it.
If the Apocalypse never happened, Côries would have been living the normal life of any neurodivergent, queer, half-demon teenager. When calamity strikes in the form of detention gone wrong, Côries is whisked into the world of politics where gods serve as dictators and social media influencers.
Côries is kidnapped by two civil servants who work for his least favorite god, Aman. After being freed by snarky time-traveler Vedette, he is faced with a question that will change the course of history: What is the value of a life in a world ruled by gods?
VARIOUS INFO
150563 words
Average of 8.3 hours to read
Chapters are short with an average of 1000-2000 words to help focus
Three different protagonists lead the story.
The story is split into two acts with different themes and interconnected plots- Côries, which follows Côries, and Anima, which follows Becca and Caddy.
Côries is split into four parts based on themes. Anima is split into three parts.
Many characters get to speak in their own distinct voice to allow for as much diversity in narrative as possible: The narrative switches between 20 different characters so that you're never stuck on the "boring one" (I'm so sorry Jason Grace) too long!
The book is written in an experimental style! This means the book can be written through normal, first person, present tense text, but also in differing tenses, multiple points of views, through poetry, Tumblr posts, texts, snapshots of Ap psychology notes, GPS directions, screenplays, victorian novel diary entries, experimental theatre, dance, songs, and the text can go up and down, sideways, slantways and longways and backways and upside down! I've found that as a neurodivergent reader, I really enjoy variability!
Info on leads!
Côries: He/Him. A viciously snarky and wonderful pansexual high school freshman who happens to be Demiurge. Son of Lucifer. Biracial (countries do not exist anymore in the book, but his mother has Indian and Black roots)
Becca: She/Her. Closeted African American honors student and class president of Pittsville High, a high school taken over by a popular goddess looking for new material for her shows.
Caddy: She/Her/Queer. An ace/bi girl struggling with her childhood sexual abuse and future problems with Anima, the power of the gods. Vedette's first friend. Biracial
Vedette: She/Her. A painfully esoteric girl who is the final time traveler in this world. Trains Côries. Bisexual. Egyptian/Greek
Soldier: They/He. The first nonbinary soldier in an army pitted against Côries. Physically disabled after an apocalyptic surge of divine energy. White, Queer.
Cælia: She/Her. A girl tormented by the divine energy coursing in her veins caused by the Dœm Blast. Friend to Côries. Queer, white.
Jax: He/They/Them. The salutatorian at Pittsville High struggling with divine secrets they never wanted to learn and their dead brother's sexual abuse. White, bi.
Elena: She/Her. An biracial woman struggling with the neurological after-effects the surge of divine energy caused, and her status as valedictorian at Pittsville high.

That Night
Chp. 2
🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️🧙‍♂️
I take back what I said last night. That insufferable, uncouth, disrespectful, brat has been nothing but a throne in my side and it’s only been three days! Three!
Mother has somehow made it her mission to include Mawu in every single activity I would do during the day. My schedule has been completely altered due to Mother’s meddling.
Now, the moon goddess is following behind me as I headed to my meeting with the generals of Asgard and my father. How delightful.
“I still don’t understand why I must attend as well. I have better things to do than be with you all day.” The beautiful woman spoke up and I rolled my eyes with a sigh.
“I am not happy about your attendance either. And I would recommend you to stay quiet while I speak with the generals and my father.” I say and I hear her bark out a laugh in disbelief.
“Excuse you, I will have you know that I have lead my own army against the evil monster Gaunab. When he killed half of the humans on Earth and force my moon to...to,” I turn to see her eyes glowing a purple color and she closed her eyes, sighing, as she forced herself to calm down.
“I’m not unfamiliar of speaking war games to another.” She says walking past me as I watched her stomp away, her dress swaying behind her. Today she wore a silver dress, that fit her too well. It fit her deliciously. It was already a difficulty to keep my eyes off of her and now that she was wearing this dress, it has become twice as difficult. Clicking my tongue I flicked my cape behind me and followed after her.
Tumblr media
Gold doors stood in our wake as we walked closer to the war room. Father had informed me that there was another war on the horizon from the Black Beserkers. It was urgent that we speak on our next move before it was too late.
Two guards stood in front of the doors, spears gripped tight in their grasps and their silver armor gleamed in the sun.
The two guards open the door and we walk in to see all of Asgard’s generals and my father and unfortunately my brother around the gold table that showed all of Asgard’s defense positions and small horses and men that were expertly placed on the maps.
Odin looks up and noticed Mawu and I, then waved his hand over to us both. I took my place by Father’s side while Mawu stood next to Thor who smiled in greeting to her. She nods in greeting with a smile of her own and turns her focus to the table.
Two hours of going back and forth with each general with my father and my brother about which idea was best. I sighed at the endless bickering and noticed that Mawu was looking at the maps before us very intently. Moving a step closer to the table, she moves two of the maps and grazed one finger through both of them.
“What if...” taking one more good look through the maps, Mawu looked up to see the men have their full attention on her.
“What if we used a surprise attack? Gorr is known for wanting one on one fights, yes?” Her question is towards Odin who nods. “I suggest we set him up to bait and then attack him then.” She says and the generals began muttering to one another while Thor turns to her.
“How do you know of Gorr? I have not heard of him going to Midgard.” Thor states. Mawu frowns and clenched her left hand in a fist.
“He had came to Earth almost two hundred years ago and had killed a -ahem- a God and my mother and I decided to investigate it. He took us by surprise, his black dogs took out half of our troops and nearly killed my mother and I. We we were only able to survive when my sister arrived and even with her army did we narrowly win.” Mawu sighs and I raised my eyebrows, quite impressed by her conquest.
Gorr was not an enemy to make light of. He too has been a constant that father constantly struggled to keep contain. I have had my own fights with the infamous God Butcher and he was not a being to be taken lightly.
“Even though we won, it was still a devastating loss to our people and not just our troops...we lost a lot of humans that days as well. Gorr is a monster.” Her eyebrows narrow in anger and turns to Odin with determination in her eyes.
“We must stop him.” She says and Odin pats her shoulder in reassurance.
“We will. And when we do,” he raised his staff to the others who straightened their backs.
“We will place his head on a pike. To show that Asgard shall not be triffled with ever again!” Thor and the other generals raised their weapons in praise and bellowed out a yell in agreement.
I turned my eyes back to Mawu who sighed heavily and left the war room as the others continued to strategize. Seeing as that I was no longer needed, I left as well and made my way towards the library. They can bicker and fuss some more but, I refuse to be apart of it.
As I paced to the library, to my left there was movement going into the gardens and I stopped to peek over a balcony to see the moon goddess walking through the varies pattern of different flowers.
I noticed that she was cradling something in her arms and the trip to the library seemed like a later task. The idea of wanting to know where that spiteful moon goddess is up to, peaked my interest.
Following the familiar path to the gardens, I saw the cloud of black curls and shimmering silver dress sitting under a large tree that was in the middle of the gardens. And it would seem that she wasn’t alone either.
Hiding behind a tree nearby, I shapshifted into a eagle and flapped into the tree above her. Turning my head I glanced down to see that my mother had joined the younger goddess. They both sat on the soft grass and spoke softly.
Third Person POV
Irawo jumps to a nearby flower and begins nibbling on the stem.
“I hope your stay here has been well, Mawu. I promised your mother that I would make sure you were as comfortable as possible.” Frigga says to the goddess.
“Oh yes, Lady Frigga, I am quite content. Although I am trying everything within my person not to strangle a certain God of Mischief.” Mawu sighs to the All Mother who chuckles.
“My son,” she smiles. “He has always been mischievous but, he is a good man. He wasn’t one for fighting like his brother, he became interested in reading and studying, learning magic perhaps far better and faster than any student I have had under my wing.” She smiles with pride.
“He is a remarkable young man, that I am proud to call my son.” Frigga finishes as Mawu noticed movement above them and the familiar gold patch that sat on their breastbone made Mawu’s left eye twitch in annoyance.
“As remarkable as he may be,” Mawu spots a rock by her foot and secretly picked it up.
“He’s still rude and the fact that he is constantly picking at me doesn’t help either.”
“I’m sure as the time passes you two will be on better terms. When it comes to new people, Loki tends to grow on you.” Frigga explains. She then placed a hand on Mawu’s shoulder and the moon goddess looks at the All Mother in question.
“Please be patient with him,” she begins as she smiles at her.
“He’s really not all that bad.” And with that Frigga stands to her feet and leaves the gardens with Mawu contemplating her words until she remembers a certain bird brain camping above her, no doubt listening to her and Frigga’s conversation.
Mawu stands to her feet as well and fixes her dress, making sure to keep the rock in her hand as inconspicuous as possible until she quickly turns to the tree and throws it to hit the eagle.
The eagle (Loki) screeches in surprise and falls off the branch it was perched on and land on the grass in front of her. Slowly, the eagle shifted back to Loki and Mawu huffed, going over to Irawo and picking him up. He groaned from the fall and rubbed his back.
Tumblr media
“The next time you easedrop, make sure that your jewelry is hidden better. You were too easy to detect.” She ‘hmphs’ and leaves the God of Mischief to groan in pain.
Later on that night
Mawu made her way to the dining hall around this time, she was just going to eat a bit and then take a couple of snacks back to her room for her and Irawo.
“Mother, you must find a way for her to leave. I cannot take this anymore.” Before she turned the corner where the dining hall was, Mawu pressed herself against the wall and listens. In her view she watched as Loki and Frigga came from another hall walking towards the dining hall.
“Oh, Loki, Mawu is completely harmless-”
“Harmless?! She’s insufferable! It’s bad enough I have to see her almost every hour of the day but, this is too far. Now, I have to deal with her whenever I go to different realms? That is too much of my comfort that you are taking advantage of.” He said to her. Frigga grabs his arm to stop him and Loki sighs as his mother moves to stand in front of him.
“Is it really so bad to have her in your presence?”
“Yes!” He says making Frigga give him a look.
“How about this,” she begins as she moved her son’s arm to allow hers to loop through and they continue walking towards the dining hall.
“If you spend at least three hours with her for the duration of her stay, I will speak to your father about your traveling privileges than just the four realms you are allowed to go to.” She negotiated while her son raised an eyebrow at her.
“You will speak to father? He won’t give me back my traveling privileges just because you asked him.” Loki rolls his eyes while Frigga smirks.
“But, I can my son. I am not the All Mother for nothing.” She pats her son’s arm lightly and Loki gives her small smile.
Seeing that the coast was clear, Mawu made her appearance from around the corner and crossed her arms. It’s not like she was here for her own free will she was just as stuck in this as he was.
“Ibajẹ ẹlẹgbẹ.” Mawu mutters as she paced to the dining hall. Pushing the doors open, the royal family noticed her appearance and Thor raised his goblet in greeting to her.
“Ah, The Great Lady Mawu has arrived!” Thor announces. She smiled at Thor. He was a very loud guy but, he was all around friendly. In the few times they have been together he has always asked her if She wanted to join him on his many conquests on different realms to fight the enemies or in some cases, ‘play with them’.
Mawu’s POV
In spite of being here for the next few weeks, Thor was probably the only thing that has really livened up the place and the fact that Loki didn’t bother me was a great feat as well.
“Hello Thor. Back from your many conquests I see.” I take a seat between him and Frigga.
“Yes, I have returned from the realm Nidavellir. Riding with the dwarves to hunt Biolsïdhs!” He went on to talk about his adventure as a servant placed a plate of food in front of me. I thanked them and took a bite into the bread and cheese.
The feeling of someone watching me made me avert my eyes up to see Loki’s green ones glaring at me. I rolled my eyes at him and turned my head to tune into Thor’s story. It would seem that throughout dinner, Loki’s eyes never left the side of my face and it sent chills down my spine.
Once dinner was over, I walked back to my quarters with a napkin full of carrots and some sweets inside. I was nearly at my room when I saw a familiar being leaned against the wall with their arms crossed. Sighing, I quickened my walk to my door until I felt a whooshing sound and I looked to my right to see Loki now leaned against the wall by my door.
“We are to spend three hours everyday until you leave.” He stated.
“Oh joy,” I reached out to open my door but, my wrist was quickly grabbed by the God before me. I looked at his hand on my wrist then back at Loki, like he had lost his mind.
Tumblr media
“Release me-”
“Two in a half more weeks,” he says as he looks in my eyes.
“Two. That is all the time that we have to just spend three hours together. We don’t have to be friends. We don’t have to be allies. As long as you stay out of my way, I’ll stay out of yours.” He says.
“Let. Me. Go.” I grit at him and snatch my wrist back opening my door and going inside just to slam it in his face before he had the chance to speak anymore.
“Fucking asshole...” I mutter and move over to my bed where Irawo was grooming himself. He hopped his way over to me and I placed the napkin of treats on the bed and gave him two carrots where he happily began to eat his treats.
Biting into the sweet bun I managed to snag from the feast earlier, I thought back to what Loki said. Spend three hours with him for the next couple of weeks?! I sighed in annoyance.
“I can’t believe this...just what is Frigga planning.” I muffled into the bun, then moaning because I realized how good it was.
“This is really good Irawo.” I say and the bunny begins munching on his second carrot.
Third Person POV
Unbeknownst to Mawu, Loki laid in his bed slightly fuming on the fact that he now has to deal with that woman much longer than he wanted to. Damn his mother’s meddling. Taking a bite from the carrot in his hand, he hmphed in annoyance.
That insufferable woman was going to be the death of him.

The story of Zoe Laveau-- Strange Academy #13; Young, Ramos
I don't want to get too deep into this, because it's outside of my cultural lane, but I haven't seen any other posts about it so I thought I'd share a few thoughts.
I've been nervous about the character Zoe for a while now. She's depicted as a Black girl from New Orleans with the surname Laveau, with aesthetic motifs that are clearly meant to evoke vodou and other related practices. Earlier in the series, Zoe revealed herself as some sort of living dead person, who uses magic to disguise her corpse-like appearance, which resembles the popular image of a zombie.
There's a lot of cultural context here, with a lot of very charged history, and Skottie Young is, to my knowledge, a white American writer, so I've been feeling pretty anxious about the direction things were headed. Voodoo and vodou are real religious and mystical practices, which are often initiatory and semi-closed, so including them in genre fiction like this should require a certain amount of sensitivity and research, which I haven't really seen evidence of yet. The zombie, or zombi, originated within the spiritual traditions of West Africa and the African diaspora, and having been removed from that context, are grossly misunderstood by global audiences. It should also go without saying that Marie Laveau was a real person whose life and legacy are intrinsically tied many sensitive aspects of African American history.
Now, I can't say whether or not this story was executed correctly, but I don't believe that it is disrespectful to Laveau's legacy. Moreover, I appreciate that it subverts expectations that the average reader might have regarding voodoo and zombies. That word actually isn't used to describe Zoe at all, and if you know anything about traditional zombi lore it should be clear that she is something distinct and entirely separate. Zoe's life after death comes about through ancestral magic and maternal care, which is a much kinder take on both voodoo mysticism, and Laveau as a cultural figure, than what we usually see in genre fiction.
Time will tell how this storyline shakes out. I still have misgivings about Zoe's aesthetic trappings, and I do feel like the cultural context is missing from her family's magical practice.
If you want to learn more about the origin of zombies and their evolution in American pop culture, my roommate and I recently watched this three-part documentary series on youtube. [x][x][x] If you'd like to get a feel for how voodoo exists as a living tradition in present-day America, Lilith Dorsey recently gave a lovely interview on the Witch Wave podcast [spotify], which I think would be an accessible place to start, and she also recently published a fantastic book titled Orishas, Goddesses, and Voodoo Queens.
