Scene Ten
By the time we got back to campus, it was already 10PM. I was more than ready for a shower and sleep. My body was exhausted, and so was my mind. Eldritch helped me into the building, walked me to my room and even helped me get inside, with all of my things. I slid his jacket off and handed it to him. He smiled, grabbed it and turned around to head out.
“Agatha” I said softly the second his hand touched the door knob. He paused and turned around, looking me in my eyes. I gulped and took a step towards him. “My name— it’s Agatha.” I reiterated. I gave him a smile before thanking him and watching him leave. I took a deep breath and plopped on the bed. There is no way all of that just happened, I must have been dreaming? I laid there for a few more minutes before forcing myself to make my bed, unpack the bags, get my shower stuff ready and grab a new towel I just bought.
I slipped my slippers on and dragged my feet all the way down the hall, to the shower room and inside where it was too quiet. I made my way to the very last shower, hung my items up and turned the water on, waiting for it to get to the right temperature. I then stripped off the baggy t-shirt I threw on and slid inside, drowning myself under the hot water. The warm water hitting my skin reminded me of Eldritch’s lips. I felt myself blushing as the fact that I thought of that IN THE SHOWER.
I soaked in the water for a while, washing off all of the ick feelings I felt prior to Eldritch arriving. I thought about how lucky I was that he was there. I didn’t seem to care much about WHY he was there, and if he was following me, but more so about the fact that he saved my life this time, whereas before he just kept me from hurting myself because I’m an idiot.
As I stood under the water, the door to the shower room opened and faint footsteps filled the empty room. I heard chatter from a few girls as they all entered the shower area, turning on the water of the shower they chose. I listened as they began to talk louder in order to hear each other over the running water.
“Delaney, did you see that cute new freshman?” One of the girls asked.
“Which one? There were a few” Another girl said, as they all began to giggle. I rolled my eyes, annoyed by their laughs.
“He has the brightest red hair I’ve ever seen, I wonder if it's real?” I listened closer now, since I also saw that guy before.
“Oh my gosh, he is SO HOT” One of the girls shouted, causing the rest of them to shriek in excitement.
“Claire, you should totally ask him out,” One of the girls said. “You guys would look SO HOT together.” She added as they all laughed. I sighed and finished up with my shower. I turned the water off and pulled my towel in and began to dry off.
“Did any of you girls see that tall handsome guy with bright green eyes?” One of the girls asked after a few minutes of silence. I stopped drying myself so I could hear better. It sounds like they are talking about Eldritch.
“Yeah, but I don’t think he goes here” another girl said, a confused tone to her voice.
“Either way, he is hot as fuck, am I right?” the first girl said. I felt a strange sense of jealousy as they talked about him.
“Girl, I saw him come in here a little bit ago with a girl in his arms. She was wearing his coat, "she said, sounding upset by that. They were talking about me now.
“Maybe it was his girlfriend.” Delaney said, turning off her water. Shortly after, the rest of the girls turned their water off and each went to stand in front of the mirrors. I peeked out of the shower curtain to see them standing there.
“I don’t know, she wasn’t that pretty. He was def. Too hot for her.” She said with a laugh. “He probably just hit it and quit it.” She added, the rest of the girls laughing now. I took a deep breath and stepped out of the shower, after pulling my pajamas on while still in the shower stall. I tied my hair up in the towel and walked out into the area the girls were in. I didn’t make eye contact, nor look their way, but I could feel them staring at me.
“That's her!” I heard one girl whisper to the rest.
“You were right, she isn’t pretty enough to be his girlfriend.” another girl said as they all began to snicker softly together. I rolled my eyes and stormed out of the bathroom, stomping my feet as I angrily marched my way back to my dorm room. If only they knew that he had his mouth all over my body, they would be jealous.

I could really use a hashtag system when trying to buy books on amazon otherwise I have to read dozens of book summaries and wonder if the summary is hinting at smut and then decide if I’m willing to buy it and risk it and have it not have any smut :(
It’s freaking awful…
Any recommendations?

Review of To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods by Molly X. Chang
Tumblr media
Genre: High Fantasy
Age Range: Adult
My Rating: 5/10
Yang Ruying lives in a scarred world. Years ago, a portal between her own world of Pangu and the world of the ruthless and scientifically-advanced Rome opened. Since then, Ruying's country, Er Ling, has been ravaged by Rome, both through violence and the terrible drug, opian, and to fight back is to be destroyed. While magic gets scarcer and scarcer, Ruying has a remarkably strong power of her own; she is blessed by Death. She avoids her power at all cost, but when she is taken by the Romans her only option is a deal with one of her enemy's princes, Antony.
I've been looking forward to this book for a while, and I was lucky to receive an ARC, but it was a bit disappointing, and I think the big issue lies in the writing. Plotwise this is quite interesting (and very relevant to current events), but actually not that much happens. Most of the book is Ruying arguing with herself, going from accusing Roman sympathizers as traitors to teaming up with a Roman prince and maybe back again? Off the top of my head, there are maybe four major plot beats despite there being room for much more. The politics behind Rome's domination and the ongoing Panguling rebellion are quite interesting to me. Instead, time is devoted to very heavy-handed worldbuilding and Ruying's inner moral dilemma, which starts to feel like it's going in circles after a little while.
The writing of this book seems like it's attempting to be flowery, but instead it usually ends up stating the same thing over and over again in order to say it in another metaphorical way. The first 10% or so is filled with just a lot of info-dumping about the worldbuilding and Ruying's past, things that could have been woven into the narrative much better, especially since a lot of the things Ruying goes on about in her narration are addressed later in the book. Ruying herself is not a terrible character, and I sympathize with her desire to prioritize peace over what seems to be complete annihilation, but her blind faith and generally undeserved adoration for Antony make her feel one-dimensional and not very likable. There have been a few accusations of this being a colonizer romance, and I don't agree with that, but I will say the romance was annoying and took far too much time away from the very pressing plot issues.
I think there's a lot of potential in this book; the worldbuilding itself, despite its poor insertion, is really interesting, especially when Chang starts to bring in the science side of things from the Romans. The plot has a lot of room to say something sorely needed in the modern world. Unfortunately, most of that is sacrificed so Ruying can continue angsting over her dubious morality and doomed romance. Overall, I wasn't very impressed, and it's unlikely I'll continue the series, but I do think this author could potentially write some very strong novels in the future.

I'm re-reading the Discworld series for reasons, and honestly the most relatable part of reading these as an adult is how many of the protagonists start out being tired, used to their little routine and vaguely disgruntled by the interruption of the Plot. Sam Vimes wants to lie drunk in a gutter and absolutely doesn't want to be arresting dragons. Rincewind is yanked into every situation he's ever encountered, though he'd much rather be lying in a gutter too. (Minus the alcohol. Plus regretting everything he's ever done said witnessed or even heard about fourth-hand in his whole life.) Granny Weatherwax is deeply suspicious of foreign parts and that includes the next town over; Nanny has leaned into the armor of "nothing ever happens to jolly grannies who terrorize their daughters-in-law and make Saucy Jokes"
Only the young people don't seem to have picked up on this---and that's fortunate, because someone has to run around making things happen, if only so Vimes and Granny and Rincewind have a reason to get up (complaining bitterly the whole time) and put it all to rights. Without Carrot, Margrat, Eric, etc. these characters don't have that reason; they're likely to stay in the metaphorical gutter and keep wondering where it all went wrong or why anything has to change.
............well, that's not quite true. You get the sense that Vetinari knows how much certain people hate the Plot. And as the person sitting behind the metaphorical lighting board of Ankh-Morpork, he takes no small pleasure in forcing the Plot-haters specifically to stand up, and say some lines.

Books and a cup of tea (part 3): The Project by Courtney Summers
It‘s amazing, really. How good that book is. It leaves you so shocked. It leaves you shocked and sad and strangely raw. (Can you tell I'm typing this a few seconds after reading the final plot twist of this book?)
It‘s got a brilliant, (if deeply disturbing) story to it, centered around how easily people can fall prey to charisma, with that charisma hiding something much darker, how they can fall for the trappings and brainwashing of a cult.
If you‘re looking for a book that pulls out all the stops and you‘re not squeamish, that might be the book for you.
Spoilers under the cut - in regards to the squeamish part (which includes spoilers for the final plot twist of the story, as well).
I almost was too squeamish. The worst part is how brilliantly Summers executed that part in terms of writing: whenever Lev (the cult's leader) wants somebody to atone, the only line indicating that is him saying it and the character standing up afterwards. Then the chapter usually ends and we read on from a different character's point of view.
You have no clue what this atonement could be. But the ending reveals it. And I'm not sure what's worse... that part being left (at first) to the reader's imagination or reading it in all its graphic detail with this final plot twist. You see, for atonement, Lev marks the cult's members with the same scars he carries from an abusive childhood. Marking others includes burning parts of their skin and pouring scalding hot water over their torsos.
Really, it was hard doing anything else than saying "fuck" over and over again, closing the book and pacing the room for a couple of seconds. At that point, though, you can't do anything else but read on, because you want to know how the story ends.
