It was starting to sink in that for the rest of my life, the people I met, the people I became close to—there would always be a chance that they saw me as a payout.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This week I read “Faebound” by Saara El-Arifi. Let me just start by saying that the cover is absolutely gorgeous. This the the first book I have read by this author and it did not disappoint. A unique take on the fae-elven myths that has been overused way too many times in the romace-fantasy genre, this book manages to bring a lot to the table:
Drum Magic (AAAAAHHHH!!!)
Stunning World building
Diverse cast of characters
Queer representation
Enemies to lovers
need I say more?
Here is the thing. I don’t like enemies to lovers in my books. Usually, its either that they are not really enemies but just don’t like each other for no reason or their relationship somehow transends within one scene without any prior development. But here, it is handled really well. Yeeran’s charecter perhaps goes through the most change. Between choosing to fight in the Forever War that was rigged to begin with and her sister, her rolercoster of emotions bled through the pages. Her relationship with her sister, Lettle, is also a majot heighlight of the book. They stand for different side of solving the same conflict and often fight over the other’s choices. Watching them slowly try and mend their fractured relationship brings another layer of realism to the story.
That being said, there are some this that just turned me off. Some of the chapters felt very clogged. A lot of events would happen in one and in the next one, crickets. It did mess with the pacing for the latter half especially. A problem with some popular fantasy books is that for 80% of the book nothing major would happen and them suddenly at the end, major events would happen left and right and since there is so little time to process it all and moving onto the next plot twist, their impact is seldom felt (yes, I am looking at you SJM). Sadly, this book is no exception. I get the appeal revealing the plot twist at the very end to keep readers on their toes but if it suddenly comes out of nowhere and there is no time to process the events that are unfolding, that is just a bad plot twist.
Speaking of plot twist, it was (kinda) predictable after the halfway point and by the end it felt like characters were making random conjectures to reach their conclusion. And they were right every time.
Okay. Okay. I may have gone overboard on the bad side a little too much. But I like the set up to the trilogy that the first book brings and I am excited to read its sequels and other books by this author. I think I’ll pick up “The Final Strife” in a few day.
Thank you for reading. I hope if you do read the book, you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
Hasta luego, folks!

Monster High the Movie
Rating: ✨✨✨✨
Werewolf Clawdeen tries to hide her human half in order to attend the prestigious Monster High, where she hopes to be accepted and make friends. Complications quickly arise.
My expectations were zero but this was actually really cute with pretty good acting and music and of course amazingly fun hair, make up, and costuming.

One thing that drives me crazy about genshin is the fact that they REFUSE to add the event storyline as permanent quests in the game.
Here’s the thing: genshin does a bad job at maintaining an emotional connection between players and the characters (especially characters that players don’t have). You have to go through the character profiles and find out any information about the character because the game will never properly show it in an actual quest. If you don’t have the character, then tough luck cuz you miss out on their lore, which most of the times is very well written.
Genshin has only ever provided us with story quests for the five stars, and only the archons get more story quest chapters. The other five stars get ONE and that’s it. And these story quests themselves can be a huge hit or miss. You’ll either come out LOVING the character or being glad it’s over because of how horribly written they are.
Some story quests are good. Some are not. So what happens when you play these and miss out on a event that features the character and their lore? You’ll just miss out on sitting though good storytelling that solidify character’s presences. Hell, it’s even worse for the four stars in the game.
Many four stars, like Candace, Sucrose, Layla, etc. do not have a hangout event. The only way you can see them in the story is if they’re featured in the main story line, five star story quests, or limited events.
Four stars showing up in five star characters story quests is neat but they usually have a cameo and that’s about it. They can SOMETIMES show up in the archon quest line, but that’s extremely rare. So where else are they gonna show up? In the limited events!!!
These limited events are where you’ll actually see the four stars exist in Teyvat amongst the other playable casts and you’ll actually be able to learn more about them, see if they get any character development, learn about their lore, etc.
This years Windblume Festival is the main reason why I’m writing this. We got such a nice story showing character growth and building relationships and seeing playable characters consistently interact on screen while being able to develop an emotional connection with the casts.
If these limited events weren’t a thing, I wouldn’t have ever known why Rosaria even exists or what relevance she even holds in the story.
If I didn’t play these limited events, I’d miss out on incredibly written stories that show the playable characters and expand on them more.
This years Windblume limited event is hands down one of my favourite events in genshin because the emotional connection I built with the characters.
Characters like Sucrose, Bennett, and Lisa have barely been fleshed out. Their profiles mention their lore but what needs to be emphasized is ‘show, not tell.’ I can read all of their lore and like these characters but I won’t get emotionally invested in them.
When characters barely show up, it feels like they don’t exist anymore. Or if they don’t take centre stage once in a while, they feel less important overall.
Windblume showed us Mondstat and Sumeru’s casts interacting with each other, making the event inherently exciting.
We got to learn more about Sucrose as a person and how kind and caring and understanding she is. And how brave she is to forge relationships despite having severe anxiety.
We got to see a blossoming friendship between her and Collei. They bond over their similarities and differences. We see Collei open up to someone who is completely new to her. She has growth in this event. She learns to be more confident in herself and is encouraged even more to work through her trauma from her past.
Albedo!!! Cyno!!! Tighnari!!! All interact and become friends!!!
Lisa and Cyno reunite!!! We get some new lore for Cyno through their interactions and learn what their relationship is like!!!
This limited event, like many others, does such a good job at incorporating characters into quests where they feel more real. They’re not just units for us to use in the open world.
This is so important. Players NEED to understand and appreciate Genshin’s characters. These characters have so much potential. Some have been given the spotlight in previous events.
But these events aren’t permanent. Which is my issue with this game. What if players miss out on the event? What if new players join and are unable to play the event because their AR isn’t high enough? What then? Do they just never get to play through incredible stories that would make them love the characters?
It’s so awful. I will understand why mihoyo puts in so much effort into some of their limited event storylines only to not add them as endgame quests available for players to play if they didn’t participate in the event.
EDIT: just wanna add that I realized Xinyan also only appears in events…my baby girl gets good screen time during limited events and is fleshed out more and new players will never know how incredible she is cuz they haven’t played any of the events she’s been in 🫠🫠🫠

Review:
this book kept me entertained with all the drama, plot twists, and interesting characters. Loved the prologue, and how it intrigued me. The characters were crazy:
Avery fuller - the most perfect girl to ever exist… obsessed (in a crazy way) with her adopted brother LIKE WHAT? WHY?
Leda Cole - I DESPISED EVERY SECOND OF READING CHAPTERS FROM HER POINT-OF-VIEW. SHE IS JUST SO ANNOYING AND FULL OF NEGATIVE ENERGY.
Eris Dodd-randson - a girl with lots of family drama. Throughout the book I was so sorry for her and all she had to endure.
Rylin Myers - loved her story so much!! Probably the only character I resonated with.
Watt Bakradi - his chapters I enjoyed SO much! The inner dialogues with Nadia were *chef’s kiss*
Songs:
Rich Kids - Frank Ocean
Flashing lights - Kanye West
Lyrics:
“Super rich kids with nothing but loose ends
Super rich kids with nothing but fake friends”

Quotes:
“I just like making everyone wait so they’ll be that much more excited to see me,”
“May my actions be purposeful. I am my own greatest ally. I am enough in myself.”

There are almost no characters in this story, and almost no dramatic confrontations, because most of the people in it are so sick and so much the listless playthings of enormous forces.

A Marvellous Light
Freya Marske
Publisher: Tordotcom (Tor) Genre: historical fantasy, romance Year: 2021
Tumblr media
What an intriguing little book. A Marvellous Light is historical fantasy that scratched an itch I didn't even know I had. It's the opening book in a trilogy, and I won't lie, the only reason I was so excited for this book was I happened across @ming85's artwork of the second book in the series, A Restless Truth, and I really wanted to read about a lesbian transatlantic voyage murder mystery, so I hunkered down and got the first book out of the way.
For as much as I read this book as a way to get to the lesbians, it was an enjoyable journey. The magic system Freya creates is fascinating, this concept called "cradling" revolving around intricate hand movements and the presence of a string, and while this novel familiarized you with the baser aspects of the magic system, including innate stores of power, BUT the author has already hinted that these established rules are clouded by misogyny, classism, and racism and are actively being challenged and these institutions are being challenged, but for the most part this book is dealing with the magical baseline.
The main characters and love interests are opposites. Edwin is bookish, cold, and waspish. He was born into the magical world but barely has any power of his own. Robin is mundane, no magic at all, a jock and newly elevated to the gentry with the death of his father. When an accident of paperwork gets him a job as the liaison from Parliament to the magical community, and he's plunged (or unbushelled) into the world of magic is where he meets Edwin, dives into the mystery of what happened to his predecessor, and stumbles across an ancient magical conspiracy along the way. It's fun, it's lighthearted, the mystery was engaging, and the book was surprisingly horny. I did enjoy how the author refused to play into tropes when it came to the sex scenes, and also there were a lot of them.
My only criticisms of this book are that I can't believe it only takes place over a week, like Robin and Edwin fall in gay love, break up, get back together in 7 days and you're trying to tell me lesbians are the u-haulers? Also Adelaide deserved more screen time, she was by far the most competent character, and I hope to see more of her and Kitty in future installments.

These Broken Stars
Review #424 The first finished book of 2024!!! Sci fi isn’t my usual genre. Be careful, there may be spoilers in my conspiracy guesses. This young adult book had two points of view. Lilac is 16 and the military hero is 18. This was an audiobook for me, so I actually don’t know how to spell Tarver’sname lol. Here’s my notes while reading: My friend recommended this one during a long drive. I…
