It was starting to sink in that for the rest of my life, the people I met, the people I became close to—there would always be a chance that they saw me as a payout.

Books of 2023 - April
Tumblr media
A bit of an eclectic reading month now I look back on it, but I've enjoyed what I've read a lot more than last month (well, everything apart from Romeo and Juliet 👀)
The Book of Lost Tales: Part One by J.R.R. Tolkien
Lives of the Caesars by Suetonius
The Tombs of Atuan by Ursula K. Le Guin
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany
Therese Raquin by Emile Zola
The Tempest by William Shakespeare
Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin
Colonel Chabert by Honore de Balzac
Feel free to ask if you want to know my thoughts on any of these 😊

April Reads 📚
The Serpent and the Wings of Night (Crowns of Nyaxia #1) by Carissa Broadbent - 4.5/5
Six Scorched Roses (Crowns of Nyaxia #1.5) - 5/5
The Ashes and Star-Cursed King (Crowns of Nyaxia #2) - 4.5/5
*Beach Read by Emily Henry - 5/5
*People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry - 4.5/5
Absolutely loved every book I've read this month! It's taking me longer than usual to read books because I'm just tired all the time but still fighting through lol. The Crowns of Nyaxia series has been hella fun and I definitely recommend it! It's been a while since I've read fantasy and I'm so happy it was this one. The author's writing style is so good and kept me engaged. I'm planning to read her other works too. Rereading Beach Read and PWMOV was just so so good. It had me in my feels. I'm planning to start my reread of Book Lovers today and then get to Happy Place. I hear lots of tears are in order for that last one and I am ready :')
*marked for rereads

Was April slow for anyone else, or just me?
April was pretty slumpy for me. I worked a lot and when I have busy work months I tend to read less because I'm exhausted. I started one physical book, but quickly lost interest. The two traditional books I read were via audio to and from my parents' house for a semi-spontaneous weekend trip.
A huge thanks to @bookwormextraordinaire for recommending This, You Protect by owlet on ao3. I had the absolute BEST time reading it and if you're at all a Stucky shipper/fan, please read it! I plan to read the rest of the Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail series.

My April reads! How is it already May tomorrow? My favorite of the month was “True Love Experiment” by Christina Lauren. I got an ARC from the publisher on Netgalley but it comes out in May. It’s a great sequel or continuation to their “Soul Mate Equation.” Very smart, funny and hot 🥵!

April feels like it went by so fast! It felt like I didn’t get anything read but I also read some of my favorite books of the year. It’s just one of those weird months 🤷‍♀️.
Anyway, here’s what I read this month:
I’ll Be The One 5⭐️ {review}
Sasaki & Miyano vol 3 4⭐️ {review}
Bear Creek Valentine 3.5⭐️ {review}
Charisma Check -currently reading
Legends and Lattes -currently reading
I have so many favorite books this month that it’s hard to pick just one!

no one wants to know but these are all the books i read in April *jazz hands*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(id show the actual books but i got all of them at the library)
anyways, all of these books were so good but my top three are
The Seven and 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (it’s a murder mystery mixed with Groundhog Day and the plot twists are immaculate, it’s also a standalone)
Three Dark Crowns (dark academia & royalcore, the betrayals the plot twists the ✨characterization✨. beautiful, it’s the first book in a 3? book series)
and Our Dark Duet (So so so good, it’s the second book in the monsters of verity duology, and the emotions and the writing are literal poetry, victoria’s done it again. I’d put it higher but the ending ripped my heart out)

Here are my April reads for 2023! ...I did not read very much........it was a busy month. But that is okay, there is plenty more time for reading this year!
I rated all of them 4 stars! A very consistent month.

I had to pay the price. I had taken, and now I must give. Nature demanded balance.

so i’ve been reading a lot recently so this is my honest thoughts on the last books i’ve read this month (these have all been some sort of romance and this is just my opinion)
Not here to stay friends, by Kaitlyn Hill:
LOVED THIS BOOK- like the trope, the dual perspective, the make protagonist, it was all exquisite and just a good time. The only thing I didn’t like was how rushed the ending felt. 4/5 read
The Upside of Falling, by Alex Light:
yes, just yes. It was a little predictable at times but I related to some of the characters and I just loved everything about it. Honestly I adore the fake boyfriend trope and this delivered. 4.5/5 read
Tweet Cute, by Emma Lord:
So I started reading this thinking I was going to hate it. Boy was I wrong- I loved the fact the main character realized that if she had communicated everything would’ve been easier. The main characters are amazing and not one dimensional, there’s representation, and it’s easy to visualize people in your life that are like those characters. 5/5 read
The Spanish love deception, by Elena Armas:
Most definitely an acquired tasted. Had high expectation for it and was , to be frank, a little disappointed. Catalina is one of the most obnoxious characters I’ve encountered in a while, girly needs to calm down. Thought I’d love it, didn’t really enjoy it- way too overrated. 2/5 read

april reading wrap-up ✨
this month i took part in a readathon so i read a lot more than i normally would! i counted some of these books for my participation in the studyblr w/ knives 2022 genre bingo, but i'm gonna post about that separately, since i have to include some books from march as well!
• a collection of icelandic fairytales — i bought this book several years ago and now i've finally read it! it was really fun to dabble in a folklore i don't know much about and find both familiar themes and new ones, plus some stories were kinda hilarious ngl. 4/5
• a collection of poems by hermann hesse — i really enjoyed the little bit of hesse's poetry that i read last year, so i bought more! i'm not an expert in poetry by any means, but i found this little collection really lovely. 4/5
• we should all be feminists by chimamanda ngozi adichie — i don't really know what to say about this. go read it, it's really short but it really hits the nail on the head without convoluted conceptualisms. 4/5
• the last wish by andrzej sapkowski — i read most of the collection already about a year ago but i got stuck right before the last story (the last wish). it bothered me to leave it unfinished, so i finally got to it. i'll admit, it didn't do much for me, definitely my least favourite in the collection. 2/5
• dubliners by james joyce — another one that had sat on my shelf quite a long time. it was nice reading it after having lived in dublin for some months, being familiar with some of the places mentioned. naturally i enjoyed some stories less than others, but overall it was a good read. 3/5
• smashed by junji ito — after reading my first junji ito collection last month i went for another one! like the previous one, i really enjoyed this one. 4/5
• a natural history of dragons by marie brennan — oh my heart, what do i say about this book. it's brilliant, i loved it so much, and i will definitely go on reading the rest of the series! 5/5
• the old man and the sea by ernest hemingway — so good. of course it made me sad, but i loved it. 5/5
• breakfast at tiffany's by truman capote — uhm i don't know if anyone is going to agree with me on this, but i didn't like this one. i'm sorry. 1/5
• 84, charing cross road by helene hanff — this was great. books, correspondence, human connection - it made me laugh, it made me sad, it warmed my heart. 5/5
• volumes 1&2 of critical role's vox machina origins comics — i fell in love with critical role and vox machina thanks to the animated series this february; it was so lovely to get more of the characters, especially in prequel form. 5/5
• this is how you lose the time war by amal el-mohtar and max gladstone — it took me a while at the start to get into the flow of the book, but then oh man. the concept is so good, and the prose is absolutely gorgeous. 5/5
• a midsummer night's dream by shakespeare — this was so much fun! maybe i should read more comedies lol. 4/5

Shelf updated with April books
Tumblr media
Oh, I am so happy about April's reads, I wish I could go back to the beginning of the month to experience these books for the first time!
Here's what I read: - Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty for my thesis - Alexander McQueen: Working Process, again for the thesis - Dubliners by James Joyce - How to Stop Time by Matt Haigh - Radio Silence by Alice Oseman - I was Born for This by Alice Oseman
Also, I'm very sad because I have now read all of Oseman Books (minus the novellas), plus just this morning I have finished the Hearstopper tv series. So if you know about books with similar vibes please send me suggestions because I really need them!!
