slow & steady wins the race

Yesterday this blog turned a year old!

When I made it, it was “maybe” becoming Ms. Maybe I was walking away for good. Maybe not.

It seems wild to me now that I stayed for a full three months after I told him I was done. Cooking meals, doing his laundry, coordinating our lives still. And it was more like SIX months after I decided to myself that I was done. 

And the years leading up to that were a sort of quiet implosion I wasn’t even aware I was experiencing.

A year later is grief & rage & beauty & joy. I spent seven-plus years unable to sleep without medication and ten-plus years coping with debilitating driving anxiety. (Which was great living 20 miles from work without viable alternatives!) I no longer struggle with either.

But what surprises me the most is realizing all the subtle ways I was silenced for all those years and noticing all the ways I have learned to fill that silence. 

No one’s holding me in that place anymore and I still have a lot of false narratives to un-learn.

I was never a fan of his but occasionally enjoyed some of his older videos (skits and Change My Mind). That said, I quit watching years ago after a hysterical, angry outburst he had. It was so over-the-top I remember thinking he had to be joking at first, though I eventually realized he wasn’t. I remember wondering what his private life--and what his wife put up with--must look like if he was willing to act like that on camera. I’ve known there was something deeply wrong with him ever since that his acting couldn’t cover. This isn’t new--it’s just newly exposed.

Crowder is a beta male in every capacity. Crowder is a professional victim.

Crowder is a pathetic excuse for a man.

It is kind of hilarious that he’s managed to unite opposing sides through their mutual hatred of him, though. I just hate that his wife has had to endure so much pain. I hope she takes everything in the divorce. It’ll be clear to all who recognize it how much practice she’s had in merely trying to keep the situation from escalating. 

While the context is different, the behavior took me right back to being a child and trying to manage conflicts with my mother and with my previous supervisor. She would chase me to get the last word in, too. If Hilary doesn’t spend the rest of her life trying to overcome and heal from years of this, she will end up being one of the lucky ones and I absolutely hope and pray she is.

I saw a slideshow about which states in the U.S. allow child marriage and the comments were like “Yes but that’s with parental permission.” as though that somehow makes it better. The institution of child marriage throughout history has generally been precipitated by parents selling their children for higher social standing, financial gain or simply because they no longer want to be responsible for them. It was not a phenomenon caused by loved children being stolen off the street in broad daylight.

As someone from a rural area in the south, almost everyone has at least one female family member who was a child bride. Usually the story is that girl’s parents said “You’re 14, that 30 year old who is perversely interested in you has a good job and will be a good provider. We approve of you marrying him because we can’t be arsed to care about you and a woman’s worth is only as a mother and wife.”

This is still happening to this day in fundamentalist religious communities through the U.S. where a girl’s worth is often based on how chaste and ‘innocent’ she seems, older women seen as more worldly and impure by virtue of being more wise. So many fundies get married at 17, 18, 19 or 20 and their parents would probably marry them off at a younger age if they could. And sometimes they still do.
