Billy had the letter in his hands. Renee searched his face looking for any signs of hope, but there was none. Like Dar'leen, he explained the same situation about Strangerville and how no police have been able to enter its borders. His team and current detective position were not equipped for the job and it was too risky to face the unknown. He speculated Veronica would return after completing her affairs and they would question her then. Renee began talking about Vincent's disappearance and then there was a knock on the door...
Tumblr media
Payton came in. Before Renee had a chance to speak, Payton frantically told them what had happened to Vincent this past week and how he was in hospital. She had no messages come through and thought nothing was wrong. It was only when he was discharged, that everything started showing up on her phone, including Bryce's missed calls and messages. Everyone was worried and she knew to come straight to the station to inform Billy that Vincent was ok.

Tips for Writing Plot Twists
Well, after a very long, unexpected House of the Dragon fandom break, we are now back to our regularly scheduled writing program! Funnily enough, this is kind of House of the Dragon related because today we are talking about writing plot twists. And not just any plot twists, plot twists that make sense and don’t leave your reader wanting to pull their hair out and throw your book across the room. Writing plot twists is a lot harder than it looks. I know that when I read a book with a great plot twists that I actually didn’t see coming, I always wanna give the writers a little round of applause because that is impressive my friends. Especially in the day and age of super common tropes and readers’ having particular expectations, it’s always nice when there’s a new innovative twist out there. Worry not, here are a few simple twists that will help you on your way to writing the best plot twist for your story!
WWTRD??
What would the reader do, my friends? In order to write a good plot twist, you need to try and put yourself in the shoes of the reader who will actually be reading this. This might seem like a pretty obvious tip, but it’s one of the most simple and effective ones out there! As you’re going through your story or even your outline, write down all of the ways that you would normally expect the story to go. What potential twists and turns immediately come to mind? Write every single one of those down and then make sure that your plot twist does not include any of them. Especially if you read and write in the same genre (like I do, fantasy and sci-fi all the way), then your brain probably works in the same way as most of your readers. Like I mentioned above, people who always read in the same genre are used to the conventions and standards of their genre. Unfortunately for us writers, that makes it a lot harder to come up with a plot twist. I recommend looking at the list of plot twists that we’re going to throw out and writing down the opposite of all of those. That’s always good advice, imo. If you feel like your story is getting too predictable, take it in the complete opposite direction. When even you’re surprised by what’s going on, you’re on the right track!
Bread Crumbs a la Hansel and Gretel
The original versions of fairytales are absolutely terrifying. I had to look into them for one of my English classes and boy, oh boy, childhood = ruined. Anyways, just like Hansel and Gretel with their little bread crumbs, you want to subtly guide the readers’ attention away from any potential plot twist, so the twist is all the more surprising. You always want to make your readers think they know what’s going on, then flip all of that on its head. There are a lot of different tools that you can use to do that like red herrings, false flags, or other types of MacGuffins. These decoys deliberately plant false clues, or other misinformation that leads the reader in the wrong direction. Sometimes, they even lead the reader to even think they have reached the happy ending only to reveal their devious nature. HOWEVER, you will noticed that subtly is bolded above because please remember the subtly. This is another one of my big problems with YA fiction because some YA writers seem to think that kids are like legitimately stupid. That’s why I don’t think, imo, there’s been a YA book with an absolutely great plot twist in a while because YA writers tend to spoon-fed their readers everything and try too hard to steer readers in the wrong direction. Readers notice when writers do this, and you don’t want it to happen.
BFFR
Be fricken for real, guys, and that means not only ensuring that your plot twist is believable and necessary but also MAKES SENSE. Plot twists making sense is a problem that seems to have popped up in the last five years in all genres not just YA, I would say. Authors seem to focus a lot on the part of the definition of plot twists that says sudden, unexpected and shocking change of direction whilst ignoring the part that includes realistic and reasonable. To me, the realistic and reasonable part is almost more important. If a super unpredictable plot twist pops up out of nowhere without even relating to the story, of course I’m gonna be surprised. Does that mean I’m going to be surprised? No, it does not. Which leads us to the most important lesson: SHOCK VALUE FOR THE SAKE OF SHOCK VALUE IS NOT GOOD. It’s just not. That means not resorting to gimmicks or having a plot twist just to have one. Just like everything else in your story, plot twists should serve to further the story in some way. Not every story needs a plot twist, and some stories are far better off without them!
Phone a Friend!
When in doubt, phone a friend! Writer’s block, phone a friend! Need advice on character development, phone a friend! Struggling with plot twists, phone a friend! In this case, beta readers. Like I said above, stepping into the reader’s shoes is a great way to think of ideas for plot twists, and getting beta readers to read your story is a great way to test out the believability of your plot twist once you’ve written it. Ask them wether or not they thought it was effective within the overall plot, did they believe it, did they see it coming, and overall what about it worked and didn’t work for them. But, don’t ask them about any of this until after they’ve already read the book. You don’t want them to go into the story hunting for a plot twist because they won’t react the same way that an actual prospective reader would. If they immediately come to you, gushing about how amazing the plot twist was and how much they loved it, you know you’re doing something writer. And on the flip side, if they say, wait what plot twist, you know you still have a little work to do!

I have an idea! A sequel to the "MC reunites with her/his Brother" headcanon! After the tearfull reunion the Brother gets introduced to everyone. The following night, when he thinks no one is looking, he tries to kill MC in her sleep for some reason. But the brothers stop her. Their, simeon's and Diavolo's reactions.
Hey, anon! Interesting concept you got there, I bet nobody would see such a plot twist coming. I hope you like what I'm about to make of it!
the brothers, diavolo and simeon react to mc's brother attempting to end mc
-> brothers, diavolo and simeon x mc
mc's gender is not mentioned, not proof read
content warnings: violence, life-ending attempt, (implied) lesson 16 spoilers, fighting, strong language, torture mentions, implied attempt at mindbreak, implied cyberbullying, jail
-----
Lucifer
to be completely honest, lucifer had an uneasy feeling about your brother from the very start
the second he sees what the guy is about to do, lucifer grabs him by the wrist and drags him to the basement
let's just say cerberus really likes his new chew toy
Mammon
'yo! what do ya think you're doing?' he screams really loudly, startling your brother and waking you up
before you could even process what was going on, you saw mammon pinning your brother down on the floor
mammon tells you to leave the room, because, in his words, 'shit's gonna get ugly'
Leviathan
levi can't believe what he's seeing
he doesn't know what to do, the only thing he knows is that he needs to act quickly
lucifer won't like this, but levi immediately summons lotan to take care of your brother, while the sea monster is doing its job, the usually shy levi carries you somewhere safe
Satan
your brother has a huge problem, satan is probably the last demon you want to encounter when trying to kill the sibling he cares about
satan is no lucifer or barbatos, but he has a wide knowledge on torture methods, he just learned some new little tricks from a book too!
he'll test those out on your brother, then
Asmodeus
asmo screams really loudly at your brother when he catches him, causing you to wake up too
violence isn't really his style, so he won't physically hurt your brother, but mentally is another case
as you know, asmo has tons of fans, if they all turned against your brother, he'd never be free from hate and slander
Beelzebub
he absolutely hates what he sees, beel was so happy you're reunited with your sibling again but that dude pulls this?
beel can't forgive that, he grabs your brother from behind and carries him to barbatos' 'special rooms'
he leaves the punishing to barbatos, beel want to stay by your side for now, to help you digest what just happened
Belphegor
belphie thought he was seeing things wrong given how tired he was
he doesn't want to wake you up, so he drags your brother outside before using his tail to deal with him
but, belphie gets reminded of his horrible past action while doing it, so he lets your brother go, but warns him that if he ever sees him again, he'll kill him for real
Diavolo
diavolo grabs your brother by the wrist, stares into his eyes and asks what he's doing
your brother tries to run away, but diavolo is strong enough to hold him down
the prince calls his trusty butler 'barbatos, I found a new prisoner' before bringing your brother to the castle
Simeon
simeon steps in front of you, shielding your sleeping form from the attack
he really wants to do what lucifer would do, but it won't fit his image as an angel and it would set a terrible example for luke
he lets your brother go, and tells him to never find you again, but simeon will watch over you at all times just in case

okay so I've been just been thinking about Aziraphale and insecurities and the general census I've gotten from this webbed-site 'that he would never shut up that's stupid.' (in a non serious way lol)
Hear me out though, Aziraphale could change his corporeal form to whatever he liked but I think that doesn't necessarily mean he wouldn't feel self conscious sometimes.
He was issued this body from the beginning like a tool or a weapon and it has been effected noticeably by hedonism and enjoying earthly pleasures, so to other angels this is weird.
like even Gabriel commented and mocked him for being chubby in s1.
so! in general i think he really likes the idea of presenting himself being a cute round sweet little pooh bear (while in reality being a fucking killing machine, an absolute badass) which separates himself from the other angels, in a perceivably subtle way he likes to look different from them, not so severe, kind and approachable and comfy, like an old couch instead of a metal chair, but hes still obviously an angel.
but sometimes i think it wouldn't be too crazy for him to wonder if the way his body is now is something Crowley could ever find attractive (sexually or otherwise), and that's really the only place where the insecurity would stem from ya know?
(plot twist: every person Crowley's ever looked at twice is only because they looked like Aziraphale, but I'm sure you knew that.)
BUT i think the idea of changing himself to be something he thought Crowley would like would be so embarrassing and would seem wholly pathetic to him right?
and it would make him sad to think that Crowley is that shallow and really this is him, the curves and the marks and ruddy face and chubby thighs and round belly are all proof of how thoroughly he's enjoyed his time on earth, feasting and relaxing and reading.
and its ironic because all of those things have been facilitated by Crowley in some form or another because he likes to tend to him.
Anthony acts of service Crowley, i would go so far as to say that the physical evidence of Aziraphales pleasure and decadence and enjoyment are super gratifying, and obviously he thinks Aziraphale is as cute as a button (and if I'm being gross on main, imo Crowley thinks Aziraphales plump curvy loveliness is red burning hot, v relatable.)
so Aziraphale could change himself into something he might think Crowley would like, but god wouldn't that just be humiliatingly vulnerable, it would be admitting too much and really he wants Crowley to want him the way that he is, it wouldn't feel good otherwise.
I'm not saying he loathes his body, otherwise he would change it of course, (and he shouldn't he's lovely) I just think his feelings on the subject are probably pretty nuanced, two or more feelings can exist at once, ya feel me?
hahaha but yeah baby you're ALREADY THERE, peak form.

EVELYN'S POV
Another week had past and I hadn’t seen the outside world since I arrived at the International Hotel.
The only fresh air I got was out on the terrace of the penthouse and often times it was at ungodly hours of the night, because I learned that Elvis liked sleeping during the day and being awake throughout the night.
He was a nocturnal creature after all, so this did not surprise me. He wore a daylight ring that prevented him from burning in the sun but he told me that after he was turned, he didn’t like the heat and sun as much as he used to anymore.
When the topic of his transition came up, I could sense he didn’t want to talk about it and I didn’t push him on it.
If he wanted to tell me about it, he would.
Perhaps he already did and I would remember it when I got my memories back.
When me and Elvis weren’t sleeping together and tearing each others’ clothes off, we talked.
Sometimes about random, trivial things but most of the time, it was about our life together and where we’d go from here.
The situation was strange – despite the flashbacks I’d have when we had sex or he fed from me, I still couldn’t fully remember everything. But I was comfortable around Elvis and after spending two weeks cooped up inside of his penthouse with him by my side, I found myself not wanting to leave anymore.
I loved hearing him tell stories, have him hold my hand, hold me when I broke down in the middle of a conversation. He never judged me for the mess I currently felt I was.
Around him, I could truly be myself even though I had no idea who that was anymore.
Evelyn Harper – vampire hunter. Daughter. Wife.
I had no idea what title to live up to, and it was frustrating.
Elvis eased me into the idea of having a witch undoing the compulsion and although he couldn’t give me all the details on it because he had never experienced it before, I agreed to it.
I wanted all of this to end, I wanted my life back.
I wanted myself back.
“She’ll be here at midnight,” Red informed us after he got off the phone with his witch friend and wandered into the living area of the penthouse we were all in.
Knowing from the photographs that I’d seen, me and the guys in Elvis’ entourage used to be friendly in the past and I didn’t want to seem as if I was hiding away from them, or keeping Elvis from them.
None of them seemed to feel that way, but I did feel awkward around a few of them. I had no idea if it had been like that in the past, but it probably had something to do with what happened to Richard.
Something I apologized about to Elvis, but he wouldn’t hear of it.
I liked Red, and Sonny too. Charlie was a fun guy, an alcoholic definitely but when you’re a vampire people tend to look past that. Jerry was the youngest vampire in the bunch and he kept his distance from me, most likely still dealing with his newfound cravings.
He was smart not to try anything though, because I don’t think Elvis would take it lightly if any of his guys tried to sink their teeth into me – his wife.
He was protective, borderline possessive.
Wanting me to always sit next to him in every room, giving his entourage a warning glare when they looked my way a little too long for his liking.
I was pretty sure none of the guys meant anything by it, but I liked having a man act like that for me.
It was attractive.
Marty was another guy that worked for Elvis and he was nice too. Then there was Lamar, the least stereotypical vampire that ever walked the planet, I figured.
He was a big sturdy guy and always seemed to be in a good mood, not caring that he was often on the receiving end of Elvis' jokes.
Everyone was nice and civil, except for one.
Joe Esposito.
I figured it was because of what happened with Eli, but the vampire couldn’t stand to be near me. He never gave me as much as a “hello” when I came into a room and quite honestly, I didn’t care for him much either.
I didn’t trust him, but since he was still around, I figured Elvis liked him. So, I kept my personal opinion to myself.
“Will it hurt?” I asked Red, hoping he had answers for me that Elvis didn’t.
The ginger haired vampire gave me a sympathetic smile, scratching the back of his neck.
“I wouldn’t know, Evelyn,” he drawled in a Southern accent that sometimes seemed even stronger than that of Elvis. “I never had to go through some’in like that, but Gigi is good at what she does, I can tell ya that much.”
I sighed softly and nodded, leaning back in the couch. Elvis who was next to me wrapped his arm around my shoulders and engulfed me in his warmth, kissing my temple.
“I’m gonna be with you the whole time, baby. Ain’t gonna let anyone hurt ya.” He whispered in my ear and I’d learned to ignore the fact that despite his whispering, the guys could still hear everything.
I smiled at him and nodded, thanking him by kissing his cheek. I could feel Joe’s eyes on me, burning a hole through me, but when I looked back at him, he quickly avoided eye contact.
The little Italian fucker was starting to get on my nerves, so I slowly got up and excused myself to get ready for whatever Gigi the witch had in store with me.
In reality, I just needed a breather.
I stepped out on the terrace that was attached to Elvis’ bedroom and silently closed the sliding door behind me. I inhaled the dry Vegas air and walked closer to the railing to look at the desert city that spread out before me, neon lights twinkling vividly.
My mind wandered.
I thought about my Ruby and Eli, who had left the hotel I learned from the guys about a week ago.
They didn’t leave a message for me and I didn’t know how to feel about that.
I didn’t know how to feel about them anymore.
They were my friends and they betrayed me.
I had so much to think over and process, and so little time it seemed. I would see them again, that I was sure of, but I didn’t know if forgiveness was in the cards of my future with them.
It wasn’t something small they had lied about. It was something that changed the course of my whole life.
And my father… the worst one of them all.
I didn’t know who Christian Harper was anymore, and I doubted I ever did.
And then there was my mother…
My beautiful mother – my guardian angel.
I was sure she was looking down on me right now and smiling proudly at me for taking the reigns of my life back.
My mother passed away when I was sixteen. I can still remember everything about her, from the sound of her laugh to the smell of her perfume.
I’d never actually seen her deceased body due to the closed casket, because she had been brutally murdered by vampires and the sight hadn't been pretty.
That’s what my father told me.
A weird sensation settled in the pit of my stomach.
Telling a lie seemed second nature to Christian Harper, what if…
No, no, no.
No.
Now I was just thinking crazy.
I pushed the thought out of my mind as quick as it came and ran my hands through my hair, shaking it off. I didn’t want to make myself completely paranoid.
Trying to focus my thoughts elsewhere, I was interrupted by the sliding doors opening and closing. Then footsteps that walked closer toward me. Turning around, I expected Elvis to face me with that warm smile of his, but instead I was faced with one I’d wanted to get away from in the first place.
“Joe.” I greeted him, the tone of my voice cold.
He’d never been nice to me, so why should I?
“Evelyn.” He said in the same harsh tone, standing next to me to look at the view of Sin City.
The tension between us was uncomfortable and I wanted to turn around and go back inside, but I didn’t want to seem weak.
I didn’t want him to think I’d hide behind Elvis every time someone was an asshole to me.
“How are your memories coming along?” He asked with a small taunt to his voice as he lit a cigarette. I rolled my eyes as I kept looking at the view, shuffling away from him a little to create more distance between the two of us.
“What do you want, Joe?” I blurted out, not even answering his useless question. “If you’re here for friendly conversation, I’m not interested.”
He scoffed, and I knew an insult was burning on his tongue but he swallowed it. “I’m surprised Elvis kept you around this long. I sure miss the other girls that came in and out of this bedroom when you were off living the life you’re supposed to be living.”
I could hear laughter coming from inside. Elvis had been in a good mood all night because he knew tonight I would get all of my memories back and we would get our lives back, and I didn’t want to bring him down.
Joe was trying to hurt me with his words and he succeeded but I was a pro at sliding on a mask. I turned to him and flashed him a sarcastic smile.
“Well, I’m his wife, Joseph. And what are you.. exactly, if not a damn weak little fledgling that kisses up to the boss’ ass because he can’t survive a day without his protection?”
I could see his jaw ticking and he flicked his cigarette over the railing, his eyes darkening.
“Do you know who you’re talking to?”
I raised an eyebrow and couldn’t stop myself from letting out a laugh. I’ve been threatened by stronger and bigger vampires. “I do. I’m talking to a traitor,” I lowered my voice a little, though kept a safe distance. “Does he know what you do in your spare time? I mean, Elvis is no saint but I’m sure he won’t take it lightly when he knows one of his men sucks the life out of his fans.”
I was bluffing. I had no idea if he had been behind the murders of the girls I’d seen photos of in Elvis’ folder, but when Joe’s eyes widened a little and his eyebrow twitched, I knew I had him.
He stepped forward so quick that I didn’t have time to get away. I gasped for air as he grabbed onto my throat, not even bothering to open the sliding door as he threw me through the window which shattered immediately at the impact.
As I landed onto the floor in the bedroom, I didn’t even get the chance to breathe as Joe used his vampire speed to grab me by the throat once more and dragged me to stand up straight.
He was smaller, but he was still a supernatural being and I was not.
He had my arms bent uncomfortably behind my back as he stood behind me, his fingertips gripping onto my jaw firmly. I didn’t stand a chance.
Elvis and the others were in the room instantly and I could see the shock in Elvis’ eyes, but he recuperated immediately, his gaze on Joe darkening.
“If ya wanna keep your heart, I suggest you let go of her, Joe. Now.” Elvis growled as he took a step closer to us, but was careful not to make any sudden moves as Joe tightened his grip on me.
I was desperately gasping for air, clawing at the vampire’s arms but he didn’t let go.
“Goddamit, EP! How can you live like this? With.. with.. with a fuckin’ hunter, of all things!” Joe yelled, his voice booming through the room. “She ruins you, man. Makes you fucking weak. You’re a vampire, boss, about time you start acting like one.”
Elvis’ full vampiric features were out, and so were that of all the other guys. It was an eerie sight, yet it brought me comfort knowing that they were all standing up for me.
Well, as much comfort as one could feel in a situation like this.
Joe’s grip was getting tighter and tighter, and I could hardly breathe anymore. His fingertips were pressing against my jaw so hard that he could break my neck with the faintest flick of his wrist.
This was it. This was how it’d end – I was going to die, without fully living my life.
Without getting the life I deserved with my husband.
And then it dawned on me.
Every time Elvis would feed on me, he’d give me a little of his blood afterward because he’d been right – I hated the bite marks that were left behind.
The last time he fed was around four hours ago… meaning his blood was still in my system.
I looked at Elvis and our eyes met. I couldn’t move my head to nod nor could I talk, but our connection was strong. So strong that all it took was one look and he knew exactly what I was thinking.
I could see him give me a concerned look and I widened my eyes as I groaned and wiggled in Joe’s arms, and he knew then that he couldn’t talk me out of this. I breathed through my nose as much as I could as Joe kept rambling on and on about how Elvis was a shame to the vampire race and that he wasn’t following his natural instincts.
“Fine!” Elvis roared, taking a step closer to me and Joe. “You want me to act like a vampire? I’ll act like one.”
I gasped for air as Elvis grabbed my arm and roughly pulled me out of Joe’s grip. The smaller vampire let go of me immediately, still feeling a sense of submission toward his boss despite betraying him, and I looked up at my husband as he cupped my face.
Only this time it wasn’t the way he’d usually do when he would kiss me.
He held onto my jaw and leaned in closer, his eyes boring into mine.
He didn’t want to do this, but part of me did.
Then… I could remember everything.
And I could be with him without any worries of our relationship being “taboo” or “not natural”.
I’d be stronger, both physically and mentally. No one but me would be able to dictate my life anymore, or steal my memories away.
“It’s okay,” I whispered with a crack in my voice as I held onto his arms, nodding my head a little. He squeezed his eyes shut and let out a low growl, pressing his forehead against mine.
“I got you. I always got you.”
He pressed his lips against mine and we shared a short feverish kiss before he broke my neck and let my body go limp in his arms.
And then my whole world faded to black.

my top ten redacted boys (because i am but a bandwagoner of trends)
1. sam - took me a bit to like him ( haven't even finished his playlist yet) but god his character hurts me, he and darlin have gone through so much shit . the video talking about the future with your vampire mate basically sealed the deal on him being my favorite character, and after reading one of the bright eyes series transcripts, it makes me even more interested in his character . (and his southern accent may or may not have awakened something in me)
2. avior - is it obvious i like tragic characters yet . his series is one of the first ones i've listened to fully, and the chokehold that the plot twist had on me was insane . the realization that he had loved starlight so much that he deus ex machina'd them out of the hellscape, and then was silently YEARNING when they were pulled back . i was sobbing you don't understand officer. also love his early sarcastic personality (despite it being a facade) and his constant need to wax poetic, i wish we still saw a little bit of that in his newer audios though
3. guy - ohh the love of my life . the only comfort character ever . babygirl . he does exude millennial cringe sometimes but i can gloss over all that because i love him  🫶🫶🫶 also love his dynamic with honey they r so cute together . his flashback audio is so good AUGGHH the tension . personal favorite audio of him though is his first sick video , because i am THE guy angst enthusiast and it's the closest i'll ever get to it . he is sooo silly idc i always binge his playlist when i can't sleep (ironically i always listen to the one where he attempts to help honey sleep and it works 🫶)
4. lasko - babygirl #2 🤞🤞🤞 love him he is just an overall sweet character . i've also said this before but, him being labelled early on as submissive irked me because i usually found those character tropes annoying and they tended to be infantilized . but the thing is with lasko its not his entire characterization , he's still a very good professor at the academy and ughhhqhh i know how 2explain it i jst love him (also. his slip up in the hot boi summer audio. he is freaky .)
5. geordi - his and cutie's story is so interesting . i love their storyline so much even if it hurts to listen to the audios . they're both flawed characters in a relationship but they're still taking the necessary steps to be better. additionally, while i definitely don't stand for the shit cutie did, i can relate to them in the sense of needing to know what people are thinking to function properly, which is probably another reason why geordi and his storyline hits so close to my heart . (is that corny. maybe)
6. asher - one of the reasons im in the fandom tbh !! he's one of the first characters i got into, specifically his valenweek flashback audio i ate that shit up . . i don't listen to him that much now but still !!! i owe me being here to his character lol
7. hush - creature/babygirl . i was kinda intimidated to listen to his playlist (for god's sake his title is "mysterious stranger") but ohhhh i love him he is so strange. tying doc up in one video and then asking them to hold his hand a few videos later??? love that . him showing up in carpe deus and fucking wrecking vega kinda sealed it for me . love theorizing about him too, if that's not obvious 🫶
8. porter - when i heard the voice that this character had. i can't even explain to you what my reaction was . he's such a fucking diva i love it so much , this guy is like 80% snark, and he just fucks with vincent for no reason .(when he said he was gonna bring treasure to the summit but didn't 😭) he's also so interesting . while ya he was sent to go to the summit and assassinate a clan king (which he succeeded in) he told sweetheart about the bennets discussing their partnership with closeknit so they could get necessary info, he provided an alibi for vincent, he also stopped grilling sam when darlin told him to . (also his 2nd video with treasure . killed me tbh)
9. marcus - not proud to admit that marcus is the first character i came across on erik's channel . marcus is weirdo number 1 (derogatory) and i just find his storyline so interesting. yeah its sad why he did what he did, but overall he knew what he was doing , he fucked everyone else over, and compromised a project, of which the failure could mean life and death, just because he wanted to get freaky with the robot . his obsession and little impulse control being overrun by the asset's obsession with him. GOD . . the satisfaction i felt when he was taken away 🫶
10. caller - weirdo (compliment) . again as a horror enthusiast i love this guy . he's like ghostface but if ghostface could phase through walls/was already in your house (and also weird and obsessive) . his audio made me have the same reaction when watching horror content : "holy shit i love this but also i hate this" 10/10 . he's only last because he has one (1) video . 💔
honorable mention:
gavin - GAVIN LOVE OF MY LIFFEEEE . i really did wanna put him on my list but i haven't listened to the freelancer series properly yet!!!! this is not a matter of him being my least favorite but rather not knowing much about him in depth yet !!!!

okay wait actually now that we're on the book-series-strengths-and-shortcomings-train what do you love most about tlt and tlc? (multiple answers bonus)
HOHO A COMBO
TLC: 1) Friendship not being secondary to romance!! The series' main theme is love. In the grand finale the big bad taunts the MC about love... but she doesn't use her boyfriend, no, she uses her best friend. This is made even more powerful because by all means, the best friend was meant to be the secondary love interest by all rules of 2012 YA, but NO he is JUST A FRIEND and it is not treated as "something less". 2) Team building!!!! Oh my god!!!! Building onto point 1, but it needs its own point. Rarely does a fictional team of main characters feel as natural as the Rampion Crew. This is even more impressive because the 9 of them don't appear in the same room until the end of the series. Even though the team consists of 4 couples and 1 single, everyone has a dynamic with everyone, they have arcs that aren't tied exclusively to their partner but also someone else on the team, they interact with each other freely. 3) The wide range of characters! I am a sucker for a "team of girls totally different from each other saves the world" setup, and TLC does it perfectly. I think this is one of the best YA series out there because of how much it empowers different kinds of girls. The guys are also easy to tell apart even at first read, and I sooo appreciate that at least one of them isn't conventionally attractive (anymore). 4) It's so funny. I love these books and how funny they are. They hit the perfect balance between a fun teen adventure and a heartfelt emotional story. 5) This is one of the least "Here's what REALLY happened" series I've read. A bunch of times major things influence characters' thoughts and opinions, but those things are fake and never revealed as fake, OR the characters never learn some big things that could change their opinions at all. Seeing how impacted Winter was when she realized Levana truly loved her father, when I KNOW what really happened, always shakes me to my core - and Winter never learns the truth!!! Everyone who could explain what really happened is dead!! Winter will forever go on thinking at least her father had a marriage of love!!! And why should she learn the truth, really, it would only serve as yet another sad plot twist that traumatizes her even deeper. 6) Levana. I am not usually a villain girlie, but Levana absolutely slaps. She is simultaneously disgusting, horrible, and pitiful. Usually if I like the villain it's because he has something smart to say, but Levana doesn't, I can't relate to her or see things from her perspective... But the leads can! Levana seems to carry all the trauma and complexes of our leads, but she crumbled under them, showing Cinder what she might have become if not for her loved ones.
TLT: 1) Isn't afraid of people not getting it!! Do you understand how refreshing this is to see in a mainstream popular series??? The book doesn't act like you are an idiot, it acts like you are some sort of a genius, and you feel illiterate until you realize NO ONE got it the first time around and you're gonna have to do lots of rereading and thinking to get it. This makes it impossible to get into for some people, but so what. So what!!! What matters is that it rewards those who stay and put in the work!! 2) Absolutely bonkers insane relationships. No one can be "just a friend" in these, we need 1000 different layers of trauma and tenderness surrounding everyone. 3) Pathetic women. These books are the epitome of all the worst parts of yourself laid bare. These characters act out the most shameful, horrible memories and impulses of your heart, all the while spouting poetics about the entire situation. And it is pure catharsis!! It is so rare to see female characters depicted this pathetic without it being torture porn. 4) Writing style. It's the perfect example of how realism doesn't matter if you're good with your words. No one in these books talks like a real life person, but they are all distinct from each other and filled with personality. Every book has several lines that have the power to reduce me a to a sobbing mess just from hearing them. Just. The writing style is so good that I even enjoy reading INTERVIEWS with the author, she has a way of speaking that keeps you engaged and makes her sound so smart. 5) Each book is its own thing, keeping you on your toes, but they all still feel cohesive. It also means that even if the final book sucks, I won't have any hangups about it, since I will just be able to reread the first 3. Honestly even if AtN never comes out, I won't feel like I wasted any time, because the books are so fantastic and so worth reading that the end of the journey doesn't even matter to me that much - and if you've been here a while, you'll know what a radical statement that is for me. It is so nice to relax and enjoy the ride instead of stressing over my thoughts and opinions aging badly.

Good Omens Theories
My Personal General Speculations:
There will be a second kiss between Aziraphale & Crowley, if only to make up for the violent nature of the first one.
Aziraphale & Crowley will absolutely NOT be having sex or be revealed to have had sex in the past, both neither implied nor explicitly. I mean have you ever listened to anything Neil Gaiman ever said about them. And also that's what fan-fiction is for.
There will be no apology dances that relate to the final fifteen. (Past ones like the one in 1941 are fair game, also present ones if they're about something else, like Crowley leaves the toilet seat up or Azirphale dents the Bentley.)
There will be a 1941 Flashback Part III (I mean something is clearly missing so far).
Crowley's angel name will only be revealed if it becomes plot relevant. (But if you tag speculation about it judgmentally with "deadname" I'm blocking you on sight.)
Season 3 will end in the garden of their South Downs cottage, possibly with a nightingale singing.
Theories I like/believe are closer than anyone elses:
The Magic Trick Theory*
-> Similar but with Time Loops
Crowley is up to something in 2x02
Crowley was Raphael** (see notes & entries under "Angel Names", I think Crowley was probably Kokabiel. Not sure if the latter is really going to be important, though.)
Aziraphale is Raphael** (see "Angel Names" section, entry "Israfil")
Theories I dislike and/or don't believe in:
The Coffee-Theory***
The Body Swap Theory****
Aziraphale was acting under duress and sending secret signals during the Final Fifteen***
Crowley was Raphael (see above)
Crowley was Lucifer (Thankgod Neil already pulled the plug on that one.)
Adam is Jesus (He is the literal ANTI-christ!)
Crowley was Mary Magdalene (I mean he surely tempted Jesus with more than just all the kingdoms of the world, if ya know what I mean, and I genuinely hope that will lead to interesting situations in season 3, but that doesn't automatically mean he was Mary Magdalene.)
Mine:
No, I am not letting this miracle / box thing go.
Important Clues / Props / Rules:
Crowley's changing sideburns (& more in-depth)
Crowley's changing sunglasses
Bookshop Clock Time Skips
Clocks and Time Discrepancies
Not discontinuity but continued elsewhere
Continued scene from S2E2 to S2E3
The Secret Timeline of Season 2
The Rules of the Twist
Chiastic Structure S1
Chiastic Structure S2
Blocking
Title Sequence Analysis
Aziraphale's Illustrated Bible
Aziraphale's Documents in the Box
Document on Aziraphale's Table
Musical clues (bells)
Miracle chimes comparison
The Tales of Hoffmann
Possibly Relevant Angel Names:
Israfil (sounds a bit like Aziraphale, angel blowing the trumpet to signal the end of the world & closest to God in Islam; the Christian equivalent would be Raphael, who apparently partly inspired Aziraphale's name.)
Kokabiel (Hebrew angel who fell, connected with stars and star making, most likely possibility for Starmaker!Crowley)
Baraquiel (mentioned in Hell's book of angels directly under Aziraphale, another possibility for Crowley's former angel identity)
Muriel becomes Abaddon (??? Apocryphal Texts, present at the Last Judgement and the Resurrection of Jesus)
Azrael (a. k. a. Death, as canon in book & show, listed here for exclusion reasons)
~asteriks under the cut~
*= While the theory's details hinge too much on its assumption (i. e. guess) on how the Book Of Life works, the idea that we will learn something in season 3 that completely reframes what we think we have seen in season 2 is almost a given. There will have been some sort of "magic trick".
**= Next to Gabriel & Michael, Raphael is the only other archangel we actually know by name. So that's a glaring omission from the show. And whether it turns out to be Crowley or not, I'm sure we will learn about Raphael and his conspicuous absence in season 3.
***= It takes agency away from Aziraphale, even though his actions are completely in line with his history and characterization so far, and nullifies all emotions experienced by the characters as well as the audience during the final scenes.
****= Both Neil Gaiman & John Finnemore are too good to pull the same trick twice. Yes, even if it's a variation. C'mon, give them some credit!
(I will edit this post when something changes or someone comes up with something new.)

Comic book thoughts of day:
Wolverine #47
Ugh. Now we're at the part Logan realizes "he can't do it alone," and is getting a new weapon and a suit.
Laura is the best. I wish her fight with the Lady Sabretooth had more pagetime
Weapon X-Men #2
An improvement from the first issue, but I still maintain you should at least be a little tipsy when you read it.
The whole thing is too silly.
Spoilers:
On Wolverine:
I know Laura is supposed to be a master assaissin, but I have mixed feelings on her fight with Savage Sabretooth. I don't know. It wasn't as cathartic as I had hoped it would be. This whole arc feels inconsistent in terms of skill levels.
Yeah, maybe you could argue that "Well, Akihiro fought the 616 Creed, who is arguably the toughest et cetera et cerera...."
I don't care.
Laura's slaughtered two Sabreteeth (as she should) Aki should've at least gotten one. He has decades of training on her. He's more cunning than his father. He is SMART, dammit. He's worked in close proximity to Creed and should've ascertained a weakness or two. AT MINIMUM, they should've dragged the fight out longer, in my opinion. (Ya, I am still salty)
If they MUST do angst, I would much rather have seen him get the same treatment as Laura -- captured, roughed up a bit, then a grand tag-team escape via the eldest snikt siblings clawing their way through through hordes of beheaded Sabreteeth-robot-things.
That would've made for some good violent and gory fun, as was advertised with this arc.
Also, I am currently disappointed in the Krakoa seed. The visual was cool, and I guess there is still time to bring it back as plot twist, but also meh. We already know it won't kill him, but maybe it'll drain his healing factor too or something.
Laura is definately THE Wolverine here. Literally the only one kicking ass and taking names. (I mean, Oya and Nekra are doing their part. But Logan is a useless bastard) But her characaterization feels a little off to me. Character growth is good, but she sounds like a mini-baby Logan. Not as badly as the X-Force run, but its still there.
Also:
Tumblr media
Sir. PLEASE. sir. sir (God, the shippers are gonna have so much fun with this panel, lmao).
Honestly, I'm still struggling to get through this. I don't like any of the plot decisions. It doesn't really feel like much of a "war" to me. Just another Creed/Logan brawl, except Creed didn't have a love interest to target this time.
We already know Quire is somehow gonna be back.
And we have two more confirmed deaths in Melter and Toad. The more the deaths pile up, the more inclined I am to believe there will be a mass resurrection. or perhaps a series of small resurrections (Like Rachel via Phoenix, Quire via telekinetics, the Dead X-Men via the Five in the White Hot Room, etc.)
On Weapon X-Men
I actually like Logan/Mariko as couple, so seeing them married and raising their kids was cute.
Also, Logan having a good relationship with Amiko?!!!?!? (didn't care for her marrying Nate, but whatever)
Also, I really like Jane Howlett. Just as a concept. She's a refreshing change from the usual broody alternate Wolverines, and I'd love to see more of her backstory as a proper, independent Victorian lady of the Howlett Estate. Apparently we're supposed to get more of her next issue. But I'd also like to see her pop up again in the future. I think she has potential. Also, her getting excited over fighting a t-rex was delightful.

Help me make a decision
SO I had a plan going into this year to take a month (May) to do a sort of nano project, and originally that was going to be another rottmnt fic concept I had
But I've had some lingering insecurity with my writing for like, months now, and I'm kind of debating if I want to put that time and work into something that's going to get not a ton of interaction. Not me whining about that for the record, it is what it is and what I'm writing as of late is 100% made for Me. So while I'm not surprised, it makes me hesitant to push myself for a month to write an entire fic only for it to die in the water, ya feel?
The challenge thing isn't off the table, I may just put that energy into my fairytale novel rewrite is the thing.
I will put a rundown of the fic concept under the poll in a readmore in case you wanna look at that before deciding.
The winning result won't make a decision for me btw it's just to give me an idea to work on.
Also please be honest, because tons of people tell me they'd read a thing if they actually wouldn't is just gonna make me feel worse in the long run thank
FIC RUNDOWN UNDER THE CUT
Yes it's a rottmnt fic btw, the title for it is Taken and Lifted Above
Its a sort of Leo goes to the past with Casey Jr. fic, but they land a few days before the key gets stolen. Trying to use this to their advantage, they go to the museum to steal it first. But when they get there they find someone else taking it. And that someone else is Donnie. As in their Donnie, who as far as Leo knew died years ago.
I don't wanna say TOO much about the plot cause there's supposed to be some twists, but I will say this is gonna be one of my gnarlier fics, even compared to Artificial Phoenix. To keep it vague it's gonna contain body horror, brainwashing (??), and major character death (I will not say at what point)
It's something p different from my usual rottmnt fics, so idk how many peeps would be interested, hence me asking.

As I was coming up with a shortlist of books to review later this year, I noticed that there were some really great looking fantasy books headed our way in 2023. Here are three that caught my attention, all by Black authors:
Blood Debts by Terry J. Benton-Walker Tor Teen
Thirty years ago, a young woman was murdered, a family was lynched, and New Orleans saw the greatest magical massacre in its history. In the days that followed, a throne was stolen from a queen.
On the anniversary of these brutal events, Clement and Cristina Trudeau—the sixteen-year-old twin heirs to the powerful, magical, dethroned family—are mourning their father and caring for their sick mother. Until, by chance, they discover their mother isn’t sick—she’s cursed. Cursed by someone on the very magic council their family used to rule. Someone who will come for them next.
Cristina, once a talented and dedicated practitioner of Generational magic, has given up magic for good. An ancient spell is what killed their father and she was the one who cast it. For Clement, magic is his lifeline. A distraction from his anger and pain. Even better than the random guys he hooks up with.
Cristina and Clement used to be each other’s most trusted confidant and friend, now they barely speak. But if they have any hope of discovering who is coming after their family, they’ll have to find a way to trust each other and their family's magic, all while solving the decades-old murder that sparked the still-rising tensions between the city’s magical and non-magical communities. And if they don't succeed, New Orleans may see another massacre. Or worse.
That Self-Same Metal (Forge & Fracture Saga #1) by Brittany N. Williams Amulet Books
Sixteen-year-old Joan Sands is a gifted craftswoman who creates and upkeeps the stage blades for William Shakespeare’s acting company, The King’s Men. Joan’s skill with her blades comes from a magical ability to control metal—an ability gifted by her Head Orisha, Ogun. Because her whole family is Orisha-blessed, the Sands family have always kept tabs on the Fae presence in London. Usually that doesn’t involve much except noting the faint glow around a Fae’s body as they try to blend in with London society, but lately, there has been an uptick in brutal Fae attacks. After Joan wounds a powerful Fae and saves the son of a cruel Lord, she is drawn into political intrigue in the human and Fae worlds.
Swashbuckling, romantic, and full of the sights and sounds of Shakespeare’s London, this series starter delivers an unforgettable story—and a heroine unlike any other.
Sing Me to Sleep (Sing Me to Sleep #1) by Gabi Burton Bloomsbury
Saoirse Sorkova survives on lies. As a soldier-in-training at the most prestigious barracks in the kingdom, she lies about being a siren to avoid execution. At night, working as an assassin for a dangerous group of mercenaries, Saoirse lies about her true identity. And to her family, Saoirse tells the biggest lie of all: that she can control her siren powers and doesn't struggle constantly against an impulse to kill.
As the top trainee in her class, Saoirse would be headed for a bright future if it weren't for the need to keep her secrets out of the spotlight. But when a mysterious blackmailer threatens her sister, Saoirse takes a dangerous job that will help her investigate: she becomes personal bodyguard to the crown prince.
Saoirse should hate Prince Hayes. After all, his father is the one who enforces the kingdom's brutal creature segregation laws. But when Hayes turns out to be kind, thoughtful, and charming, Saoirse finds herself increasingly drawn to him-especially when they're forced to work together to stop a deadly killer who's plaguing the city. There's only one problem: Saoirse is that deadly killer.
Featuring an all Black and Brown cast, a forbidden romance, and a compulsively dark plot full of twists, this thrilling YA fantasy is perfect for fans of A Song Below Water and To Kill a Kingdom.

Warriors
"Shit!" Warriors hissed as he jumped back, cupping his arm tightly. The lizalfos raised its spear again, throwing it wildly around with no precision other than to lay another strike upon him. Warriors growled, twisting himself left and right before going for the opening that left the lizalfos defenseless. It fell with a sharp screech, disappearing in a puff of purple smoke, leaving behind a rupee.
"Finally," Warriors panted, "shoddy bastard." He flung the remaining guts off of the sword, swinging the sword around and placing it back into its scabbard.
"Warriors!" He looked up to see you running toward him, "Are you a-"
His brows furrowed as you came to a halt, staring wide-eyed at something. He snaps his fingers in front of you to garner your attention back onto him; a small nervous chuckle leaves your lips.
"Plot twist," your eyes rolled up to the back of your head, tittering dangerously backward to the ground. Warriors exclaim in worry, quickly grabbing your wrist and slinging his arm around your waist. He hissed as the pressure of your body pressed into his injured arm; he looked down at his arm, and the realization kicked in. His sleeve sliced in half, the wound seeping blood into the green cloth, dying the color into a murky brown.
Ah, that's right.
"Shite."
Hyrule
Hyrule lifted his head from his hand when he heard your pitiful groans; quietly as he could, he wandered over to your bedside, cupping your hand in his.
"W-What happened," you croaked.
Hyrule grimaced,
"Well,"
Hyrule was panicking, pressing against the wound to keep more blood from escaping. He couldn't heal when the group still needed him in this fight. He needed someone quick and willing to aid him with the wound, shifting his eyes around to see who wasn't in a battle. They landed on your form, watching you quickly finish off a bokoblin before shouting your name. You turned around and sprinted toward him, sliding on your knees at the end.
"What do you need me to do?"
"I need you to- WHOA!" Hyrule's hands flung up to catch you, smearing his blood on the sleeves of your undershirt. Panic tenfolds as you conked out in his arms, face pale and void of color.
"Oh no," you moaned, "I passed out at the worst time, and that's so embarrassing! In the middle of a battle? Rulie, quit laughing!"
Hyrule snickered underneath his hands before calming himself,
"It's alright; sometimes we have those types of problems."
Legend
"Please do not pass out," Legend weakly pleaded as he held the side of his head, feeling lightheaded as everything became painful. You stared at him wide-eyed, slack-jawed, watching in terror as the blood trickled down his palm and the side of his face. He winces, feeling the sharp pain wrack through his skull, grunting in agony when the pain becomes sharper.
"Love," he grunts, "go get Hyrule or anyone in the group close by, okay? Can you do that for me?"
"Legend," you whimpered,
"Go! Quickly before either of us pass out on each other!" He hissed, clutching his head tighter and closing his eyes. He heard your footsteps lessen, or he might've been imagining it when he opened them again to see he was in a room. He heaves a heavy breath of relief at the sight of the barren walls.
"Oh good! You're up," Legend looks over to see Four standing in front of him, "I'm going to get Hyrule, don't move."
"Where's," Legend trailed off; Four gestures towards the left of him, the sight of you snoring away into the pillow next to him soothed the ache he still felt. Gone was the paleness, the color of your cheeks relieved him.
‘Guess it wasn’t a dream at all,’ Legend thought.
“They passed out as soon as we got here." Four chuckles. Legend huffs through his nose,
"I'll be right back," Legend waves limply at Four, soft eyes never leaving your form.

i would like the lore review :3c
Sure. Note to readers: the following contains some spoilers for the 2021 YA novel by Alexandra Bracken, "Lore." It's also pretty critical (because as I mentioned in my previous comment: my review of Lore is that you should read Tithe instead), so if you're not feeling like reading a moderately negative review, give this one a miss.
--
"Lore," is a young adult mythologically-inspired fantasy novel set in modern New York City. It has an interesting central idea. In short, a bunch of major gods of the Greek pantheon offended against their leader and were cast down to be mortal for a week out of every 7 years, during which time killing them could pass their god-powers on to whichever mortal struck the killing blow. The gods are hunted by families who descend from ancient heroes, like Perseus or Heracles. This week long time of hunting is called the "Agon." It's a little convoluted but it's pretty fun, right?
The story centres on a young woman named Lore who fled this hidden magical underworld. Her god-hunting family, experiencing reduced circumstances due to internecine politics, were all murdered during the Agon, and then she lived with her mother's extended family who treated her poorly. At the beginning of the next Agon, she is drawn back into the fray via a message from her childhood friend, Castor.
Lore receives this message when Castor finds her and fights her at an illegal fight club, which somehow genuinely has nothing to do with the events of the plot, and is never spoken of again. This will set the tone for the whole story.
So, the good stuff: the central concept is fun. The writing is technically proficient. The characters are pretty consistent. The central plot (although not the sub plots) takes some twists and turns and arrives at a completely coherent conclusion. The entire central idea of the Agon is resolved in a thematically coherent way.
My major criticism of this book — and it is a really major, structural thing — is that the novel attempts to tackle an enormous array of ideas, and does so poorly. It races around trying to take on all of them in a half-assed way, instead of committing to two or three central concepts with its whole buttocks. This book will pick up a thought or idea, run with it for a bit, and then forget it even occurred while it careens off towards another, equally ill-explored idea. This has its most profound and regrettable effect on characterisation, where we get incidents like:
illegal fight club irrelevant to the plot is never again mentioned by any character, or
entire story propped up by the trembling buttress of convenient amnesia that disappears in the epilogue, or
character learns that her whole family was murdered by a totally different person than she thought, which impacts the events of the plot, but appears to have minimal effect on her thoughts or feelings
These are not the only examples, they're just the ones that stand out to me at 1:22 AM on Saturday.
In general, my conclusion is that this book has a convoluted but fun central idea and the actual writing reads well, but it is shallow and confused by trying to do too much all at once. "Lore," would have read better to me if it had been a simpler (and shorter, bloody oath) story which cut half the subplots and weird character threads and instead focused on developing strong characters and a nuanced central thesis.
I'm going to end this with a speech from Athena, made on a topic that she never again mentions:
"No. That is she men have portrayed her [Medusa] as, through art, through tales," Athena said. "They imagined her hideous because they feared to meet the true gaze of a woman, to witness the powerful storm that lives inside, waiting. She was not defeated by my uncle's assault. She was merely reborn as a being who could gaze back at the world, unafraid."
Cheers, Athena.

Book Reads and TBR for February 💗!!
Hey Guys!! Sorry for literally being absent for like forever...but I'm back, and I swear that I'm going to try to be more consistent now! Anyway, I wanted to share the books I've read in the past couple of months and my tbr for February!!
My Reads:
The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros: Surprisingly, I read a lot of my tbr and this book was one of the books on it! I know there were mixed reviews and some people really hated it, but I goddamn loved it! Literally, this book was to die for. Ngl the first two or three chapters are a bit slow but it gets soo much better after so its completely worth it. Also can we just take a second for this immaculate enemies to lovers..absolute perfection. Also the amount of times I had to put down the book after the male mc said something and literally squealed....anyways I would rate it a 4.5/5 stars :)))
Foul Heart Hunstman by Chloe Gong: LOVED!!! I fell in love with the first book, also I just love all of Chloe Gong's writing, just absolute masterpieces. And I knew as soon as the second book came out that I was gonna love it just as much, and I did! The plot was beautifully executed, the characters are just so well written, AND we get some new but old characters !!! I just loved every second of this book and it just made me so happy to finish this series. 5/5 stars
Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen: This was one of the first memoirs that I've read, and for it being the first one this was actually pretty good. It was a pretty short read, and it was still interesting. Overall just a good story and it feels nice to read something that's not fiction in a while. I really loved reading about the main character's experiences in this book, I would rate it a 4/5 stars for a memoir.
Powerless by Lauren Roberts: OOOH, I loved this book sooo much!! Another great enemies to lovers!!! This book had Hunger Games and like Red Queen esq vibes to it but I was completely fine since I completely adore both of those series, the plot was so well written, the characters were also interesting and so were the side characters. The trope was also executed so well, and it made me so happy to see well-written enemies to lovers !! Can you tell I've been in an enemies to lovers trope vibe lately reading-wise?? Loved it, and would rate it a 4.5/5, and I'm excited for the second book !!
Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls: Another memoir!! This one was actually better than the first one I read for me. I felt like I enjoyed the storyline of this a lot more. This storyline was very interesting and it really changed my perspective about some things in general, also a reality check :). Overall, I really just loved this book and I finished it in two nights cuz I was just so invested!! 4.5/5 for my second memoir!
The Way I Am Now by Amber Smith: OMG THIS BOOK ACTUALLY MADE ME SO HAPPY!! Ifykyk, The Way I Used to Be is an absolute rollercoaster and made me an emotional wreck. But this sequel healed all those cracks that the first book made. I was so happy to see Eden finally get what she deserved and just her happy and actually living in the longest time...don't wanna spoil anything.. Overall this book just made me so happy and I finished it in a day cuz I just couldn't wait to see how it ended!! 5/5 cuz it holds a special place in my heart <3
One of Us is Back by Karen McManus: UM...ya ngl this book was not it.. Don't get me wrong, I loved the first two books like the plot and characters were amazing, and the mystery aspect was good too, and when I heard that a third book was being released, I was like YAY cuz I loved the series. But this book was just so underwhelming. It took me like 4 days to finish cuz I was dragging myself through the book almost. I just didn't really like the plot, there were some good twists but it was just meh. I feel like the series would have just been better without this book, but that's just my opinion. 🤷‍♀️ I would rate it a 2.5/5.
MY TBR FOR FEBRUARY !!!
The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon: Ya this is still on my tbr.. prob has been for a solid three months, but I finally out a hold on it in my public library so yayyy. Still, Im very excited to read this book and I just can't wait!
Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros: Yall already know I was gonna put this on by Tbr after reading Fourth Wing 😭😭! I just have no words..I can't wait to get my hands on this stupid book, like I'm so excited!!! I just know I'm gonna love it based on my interaction with the first book and I'm also invested for the next 3 books after cuz apparently its a 5 book series..and might become a TV show!! But also idk if its even gonna pan out, cuz Ive been waiting for that Red Queen tv show for a fat minute now..
Fate Breaker by Victoria Aveyard: My literal queen has finally published the last book in her trilogy of Realm Breaker and damn am I excited!! I own all of her books so Im excited to finally add this one to my collection and also can we just take a minute for how stunning her covers always our..love the royalty of it. top reads of 2023
I read roughly 118 books this year, but many didn't stick with me (and some I probably should have marked DNF earlier). However, I gained some new ones that I really enjoyed!
Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez - I really love stories about the occult, cults, strange beings, etc. and Enriquez is an incredibly gifted writer, who really make this absolutel doorstopper of a book fly quickly.
Chlorine by Jade Song - Love a queer coming of age horror story!! Song did wonderfully with metaphor and visuals, really making me feel viscerally uncomfortable and almost pained at points when working through the body horror that defines the story.
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado - Anything but a fun read, this incredibly creative and well crafted memoir about Machado's toxic and abusive relationship with her unnamed ex-girlfriend inspired me to get very experimental with some of my own writing.
Mary by Nat Cassidy - This one was just a fucking fun horror debut from author and comedian Nat Cassidy. Despite being what I'd consider a fun horror story, it definitely isn't a cozy read. The relationships in this book are often uncomfortable, but in a way that is necessary to the story. I also really loved how Cassidy followed through with the menopause as body horror extended metaphor.
The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by Andrew Joseph White - I normally don't read YA--nothing wrong with it, just aged out of it myself--but this one is absolutely stunning in the darkness of its plot and arcs. Definitely not for the faint of heart or anyone with legitimate triggers in fiction, but a wonderful story following a trans autistic protagonist through a twisted journey.
Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones - A strong second act in the three part Indian Lake trilogy. Cannot complain about pre-ordering a signed first edition copy, and absolutely cannot WAIT for the final act of this horror trilogy releasing this year (Angel of Indian Lake).
Out There Screaming: An Anthology of New Black Horror edited by Jordan Peele - There were so many good stories in this anthology, I couldn't possibly name them all, but lets just say the women authors really brought their A game to this book!
A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine - This sci-fi duology with incredible world building and conlanging of English as it might be imagined in the far future genuinely inspired me so much that I started getting off my ass to write my own sci fi story.
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard - Another piece of literature that inspired me to write this year, this one is a collection of Dillard's thoughts organized into not-quite-essays but not-quite-anything-else. If you read any chapter from it, read chapter eleven. Genuinely made me reevaluate the role of life in the universe.
If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio - Dark academia's favorite contemporary novel, and I finally read it this year. I fell utterly in love with it--the characters, the foreshadowing, the us of allegory and archetypes and metaphors. I actually wasn't convinced upon reading Act I that I would enjoy it at all, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's rocketed it's qay up to being possibly one of my favorite fiction novels of all time.
