thinking about harvey stardew valley and being a rural country doctor with a caseload like:
guy who won’t accept any diagnosis except “you have consumption and need to go to the seaside for your health”
woman who asks what gemstone he would prescribe for her UTI
guy who spends half the day trying to give himself a concussion and the other half trying to blow out his hearing on his guitar
two people who have struggled with alcoholism for years but reject all of his resources for it UNTIL someone gifts them alcohol biweekly for a year straight and suddenly their lives turn around
guy who will not stop mailing people bombs but in a friendly way and like this just isn’t on the PTSD screener??
guy who won’t stop asking him vague but increasingly bizarre questions about the safety of truffle oil
woman who EATS ROCKS
and also there’s a fucking wizard. what’s up with that. how often do you think the man goes “why did i get an MD why didn’t i just train to be a wizard i didn’t even know that was an option” while performing emergency surgery on this one farmer who won’t stop picking fights with ACTUAL MONSTERS

traditionally the dead would be buried with coins on their eyes or in their mouth so that they could insert them within the 10 second countdown to continue playing and cheat death yet again. the practice fell out of fashion largely due to the invention of the home console

People love to talk about identity based social privilege, which is fair, but I don't think many of you have really grasped that being hot confers the most absurd privilege in the world. Pretty privilege is real, omnipresent and unavoidable.

What's your favourite unfinished fic?
It could be a work in progress being rapidly updated or a fic in limbo where you don't actually know if it'll be finished, or a definitely discontinued text. Just your favourite of the fics that are like, "even if it never ends up finished, it is still really worth reading for what currently exists"?

A Pocket Full of Posies by lulu_lisbon (FMAB) is a good fic if you're looking for something novella length and reasonably fast paced. It's a little heterosexual for my tastes but it doesn't let that get in the way of Rosie's adventures in the Amestrian military. It has the advantage of being completed.
You know how I am about self insert and modern OC fics.
I've read a few such fics lately and of the ones that were new to me, here are the stand out ones:
by foot it's a slow climb by Vroomian (MDZS) is a good fic if you're looking for a character-focused power fantasy with one of those self-effacing unreliable narrator OCs who downplays their amazing feats of magic and is beloved by all those around them. You know the kind. This is a really fun example of that particular genre of OC/SI fic.
Pound the Table by An_October_Daye (X-Men (comics-verse!)) is a good fic if you're looking for something that's long enough to distract you for hours. Despite a slightly anomalous early-chapter dip into vigilante murder (which nevertheless clearly serves a structural purpose for the story), the fic focuses mostly on the amusing legal drama.
deathless by pallidus (The Witcher (doesn't seem like book-verse, maybe video games or tv)) is a good fic if you're selecting SI/OC fics entirely on setting and vibes alone. The plot content is, so far, pretty minimal. But the vibes are impeccable.
None of these is a "reader" insert fic.

They do this with chillies as well but it seems that they're not usually very spicy after the jarring process for something reason. And hot sauce is an entirely different thing. Hot chilli powder gets you 3/4 of the way. But you really just have to use fresh chillies to access maximum chilli. That's just how it is.
Lately, I've been reminded that they actually sell minced garlic in jars and I can add as many spoonfuls to my dinner as I like. That's totally legal and nobody can stop me.

re: australian localization, i feel like it could work for zabuza or maybe other kriri nin? (not all of them) but they to me have the vibe of someone who would call me a cunt affectionately - but also i second Hidan, it just feels right
It used to be pretty common for old US voiced anime dubs to choose to have one character sound, like, English or Australian for no really obvious reason. That's just a thing they do, I guess? ( @mixelation showed me one from Yu-Gi-Oh earlier today when I was talking about this, actually, that was... I think... trying to be both? It was pretty bad.)
I've put my vote behind Gai as the token Aussie voice, but I can see Zabuza too. That would be one way of making him seem foreign to the main cast. đź’€

Wait, it's interesting that you're thinking anon might be an older cishet woman with family and kids because I really thought this is a younger Gen Z who's "media critical" and TikTok brainrot because of the "you're a grown-ass adult" and I've encountered miserable and already burnt out and mentally ill Gen Zs who would say shit like this. XD
You might be right though, but the similarity is so funny and jarring. Gen Zs really are the next Boomer
Oh no, to be clear, I don't think they HAVE to be an older cis het woman! I meant that they remind me of that kind of person.
I think the "I suffered in this way and so you need to as well, or else I will chuck a wobbly about it," feeling is a universal thing that we all feel when we have to challenge important beliefs we hold.
Other versions of this behaviour include, for example, "I paid my massive student loan off and it was awful, so how dare you get loan forgiveness?" and "I was hit by my parents as a kid and I'm fine, so I don't see why you should get a 'softer' childhood than I did, you're weak and entitled," and so on.
The "older cis het women" in my description were one example. They came to mind easily because they happened to be recurring characters in my adolescence.
So I agree, you could definitely be right: that anon may well be quite young, I have no way of knowing that! I just think, more, that they are managing what is actually a pretty universal experience of interpersonal resentment for someone they perceive to "have it easier" without very much grace or dignity.

re: australian localization - which naruto character do you feel would use the most aussie slang. because i feel strongly that it would be hidan
I think Hidan is a good shout! He seems very informal. Also, I think he'd use the more colourful phrases like, eg., "he couldn't find a root in a whorehouse."
But for me, maybe Gai, who could use the really old fashioned slang. There's a man who's been fair dinkum running like a cut cat all day. And so on. And so forth. I think it helps that he's already an outlandish character, because I can't actually conceptualise the Australian slang meeting the Naruto vibes very well, haha.

Never have I so quickly regretted posting anything. We made it ONE reblog in.
I have never seen someone use "old mate" that way in my LIFE
Australianism strikes again!
It's on Wiktionary for you though: https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/old_mate

"Old mate," is often gently derogatory but not actually offensive, so you would have people saying stuff like, "Well, old mate in the corner office has decided we need to log it in both systems so it's out of my hands."
So, you know, now that I've reflected on this, I reckon you could use it to localise all the dramatic shonen anime scenes that mention "ano otoko," or "ano hito," that are usually translated to an (often ominous) "that man..." or "that person..."
E.g., "Yeah. Old mate joined the Akatsuki right after—you know," with significant eyebrow(s) and a head tilt in the direction of the empty Uchiha compound.
I think what I'm saying is that Australian localisation of anime would be a trip.
