You know how I am about self insert and modern OC fics.

I've read a few such fics lately and of the ones that were new to me, here are the stand out ones:

by foot it's a slow climb by Vroomian (MDZS) is a good fic if you're looking for a character-focused power fantasy with one of those self-effacing unreliable narrator OCs who downplays their amazing feats of magic and is beloved by all those around them. You know the kind. This is a really fun example of that particular genre of OC/SI fic.

Pound the Table by An_October_Daye (X-Men (comics-verse!)) is a good fic if you're looking for something that's long enough to distract you for hours. Despite a slightly anomalous early-chapter dip into vigilante murder (which nevertheless clearly serves a structural purpose for the story), the fic focuses mostly on the amusing legal drama.

deathless by pallidus (The Witcher (doesn't seem like book-verse, maybe video games or tv)) is a good fic if you're selecting SI/OC fics entirely on setting and vibes alone. The plot content is, so far, pretty minimal. But the vibes are impeccable.

None of these is a "reader" insert fic.

5 + 1 Fic Friday Roundup: Raised by Other(s)

Have some fics about kids getting to grow up with a different family (and/or organization) or that had additional family unit(s) (which can include adoption). It's a fun AU premise since how much does an altered childhood change a character (and, thus, their story)?

A Greater Purpose (AO3) - "A young Byleth is adopted by Archbishop Rhea under false pretenses and is raised within Garreg Mach. Although groomed for a singular purpose, Byleth finds her goals becoming complicated after being appointed as a professor at the Officers Academy. As history catches up to her, she will have to decide who she is and what is the right path for her."

The Beast from Mordor (AO3) - "A year after Smaug's death, a messenger comes to Erebor with terrible news - Prince Vili, husband of Princess Dis, and their only son, a dwarfling of four, have been killed in an orc raid. The messenger is right, but only on one count. For at that exact moment, the little dwarfling is on his way south to Mordor, clasped to a female orc's breast. Many decades later, a young dwarf emerges from Mordor, completely shorn of hair, heavily dyed, and believing himself to be an orc. Will he ever discover his true identity or be reunited with his family?

Pack Horde (AO3) - "Involving Janet Drake being the serial adopter instead of Bruce."

a watched kettle never boils (AO3) - "Endeavor doesn’t show up to Sekoto Hill, but Gang Orca does. This changes things."

Another Brother (FF) - "It was a mission of revenge. There weren't supposed to be any survivors, but Chief Hakoda couldn't bring himself to kill the Fire Nation boy. Against his better judgment, he brought him home. A Zuko joins the Water Tribe story."

Bonus: A Crown of Laurels (I Lay Upon Your Head) (SB) - "A young man, reincarnated as Criston Cole, remembers his past life, and Rhaenyra Targaryen is forever changed for it. For better or for worse, Westeros is set on a different path."

With his identity revealed it loosed the need for discretion, thus, maintaining the pretense would be nothing but bothersome. "However, I'm no petty officer, I'm a medic." Ikezu pointed to the conspicuous long red cross that decorated his vest.

Luffy turned around to face Ikezu once more. "A medic, seriously...?! Wow, that's so cool!"

That... certainly was a nice way to put it.

"Hey, why don'tcha join my crew?"

Ikezu is a frontline medic from the 145th Branch of the Marines, whose future is uncertain. Still clinging to the memory of someone dear, Ikezu finds little purpose in serving under the World Government and keeping on with his master's legacy.

That is until a conspicuous crew of pirates arrives at Cumbergrave Island causing trouble and asking for him to join them.

Hi Ray, hope you're doing well! I've got a fic rec for anyone interested in Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (not sure how much you know of ORV. It does spoil some stuff though)

Honestly I'm in the middle of reading it rn (it's got over 60k words currently), and it does get a little confusing but in a very good way! The kind that makes you go "huh?" then "ah! I see what the author did". It's a very fun read.

One of the best feelings for me as a fic writer in this fandom is when somebody tells me that they liked one of my original characters. Character creation can be hard work and nerve-wracking, so it’s really rewarding whenever people tell me that it’s paid off. This fandom has a wealth of fantastic, memorable original characters, so I wanted to make a recommendation list of some of my favourite fics that feature them. The fics in this list are a range of lengths, ratings, warnings, and themes, and I’m hoping everyone will be able to find something to their taste here.

omg hiiii welcome to the fandom! im glad you like my blog, dont feel bad about like-spamming. and to answer your question, i do know of some fics that are critical of konoha/the shinobi system, but theyre all sasuke-centric in case that's not ur thing. theyre not all necessarily of the revolutionary variety, but the underlying calls for justice are consistently present

the first one i always rec in these situations is A Lack of Wisdom. it's complete, the characterization is great even though it's technically an SI OC fic, the plot developments are unique and rational

looking for forgiveness (i ran into your madness) is a great exploration of a genin era sasuke who's slowly becoming unhinged as the true nature of konoha becomes painfully obvious to him, yet disappointingly unnoticed by those around him

Kizuna Hikari is an SNS (sasunarusasu) fic that diverges after chapter 699. it has a very empathetic take on sasuke and sakura in particular

TakaGang and onepieceofharry have both written multiple sasuke-centric/anti-konoha fics, theyre all definitely worth reading imo

Hello! Sure, I have a few fics I'd reccommend:

Pureblood Pretense - If you like Harry Potter, world-building, and incredibly complex characters, I would highly recommend it. The series is on its 5th novel now, over 1mil words. It's technically a f!Harry story, but Harry/Rigel is essentially an OC and is treated as such. It is hands down one of my favourite works of fiction.

The concept of the story is that Tom Riddle went into politics instead, which has made a vast number of changes in the wizarding world--including Hogwarts becoming a Pureblood-only school for wizards. Harriett/Rigel, being a halfblood, concocts a plan with her OC pureblood son-of-Sirius-Black cousin to switch places with him so that she can go to Hogwarts to pursue her dream of potion-making while her cousin can learn to heal at an American school. It's a wonderful story with a lot of world-building and politics!

Some other that I like are...

Paper Cranes: Hikaru no Go, 212k - currently on an indefinite hiatus, but it largely deals with grief and the aftermath of settling your life after losing something that was integral to you. It delves more into Hikaru's abilities to see ghosts and does a really really good job of making a childish, complicated person very likable and relatable.

(Fun fact, Hikago is one of my favourite animes!)

and much madness it takes: One Piece, 55k, complete. SI/OC inserted into a child of Big Mom, which is just as horrifying as one might expect.

The Cowards Redemption: One Piece, 150k, incomplete (also hasn't been updated in a year) A Future!Usopp where his crew is destroyed and is sent back in time, to the beginning, where he has the chance to change things!? We love time shenanigans!

Sanitize: Naruto, 89k, still in progress. OC is inserted into the Naruto world during the Warring Clans era, utilizing her knowledge of modern day medicine to improve the lives of many.

from the corner of your eye: Naruto, 168k, in progress. A small, simple misunderstanding during the genin testing changes things drastically. (I actually need to catch up on this, because stopped reading this awhile ago but I loved it)

Lucky Child: Yu yu Hakusho, 1117k, still in progress. SI reborn into a side character, having to struggle with either changing her narrative or keeping to the status quo. This isn't so easy when there are malevolent forces at play who are banking on her to cross the line.

Astra Inclinant: One Piece, 201k, Complete. AU where Doflamingo actually loves his brother and tries really fucking hard.... It's not any kinder story, though. 10/10, loved this characterization of Doffy.

A Lack of Wisdom: Naruto, 292k, complete. Self-aware SI is inserted into the body of Sasuke, leading to many fun and heartbreaking shenanigans. Handles gender and the crisis of identity beautifully!!

As far as the ocean will take us: Still in progress, 180k, One Piece. A marine medic turned Strawhat! (The slowburn romance is chef's kiss)

5 + 1 Fic Friday Roundup: Uplifting Women

Some fics revolving around women (and one man in a woman’s body) who lift their family/community/world up. May is the month of Mental Health Awareness after all - though I went for tech uplift instead of creating an uplifting atmosphere via emotional labor (though there is some of that in some of these as well).

1. Down the Rabbit Hole to Westeros (AO3)  -  A SI into Selyse Florent, later Selyse Baratheon. Refusing this time around to be vexed by a mustache, lack of indoor plumbing, and no more guacamole in favor of keeping her eyes on the prize: Surviving the upcoming Long Night and not letting Melisandre go Full Melisandre.

2. Compass of thy Soul (FF / AO3) -  Being reborn into the Uchiha clan during the Warring Clans Era is surprisingly idyllic, so long as you don't mind hard work and are too young to know any of the people who are actually dying. But innocence never lasts, and trying to help family stay alive is a road strewn with a surprising number of pitfalls and last-minute diversions. [SI-OC. Fluff, politics, fix-it. No Aliens.]

3. Sanitize (FF / AO3) -  Basic medicine and sanitation are simple. During the Warring Clans era, they become revolutionary. [OC-Insert]

4. Cold Winds Blowing (SB) -  Maia, a young woman without much direction in life, awakes in the snows of the True North beyond the Wall in the year 295 After Conquest. Equipped with a power she barely understands, the Celestial Forge and the endless potential it represents, she struggles to find her own path on the foreign world of Planetos. Will she be wrapped up in the schemes of the great players? Can the best of intentions truly bear out good results, or are they a mere hindrance to true power?

5. Taylor on the Edge of Forever (SB) -  A Worm AU/Star Trek AU where Taylor Hebert has alt powers related to having been in the Star Trek future before being returned to her teenage self in Brockton Bay.

Bonus: Coin and Conformity (SB / AO3) - A man wakes up one day to find that he isn't in his apartment, isn't in his own body, and isn't even on Earth anymore. The language, the geography, the culture, the stars, and even the technology level are all different. Even worse, in this backwards medieval society he had found himself in, he woke up in the body of a woman. A woman who had just given birth to her first child, a son.

as for fic recs, really just comb through my bookmarks and see what piques your interest. i tend to only bookmark stuff if i know i'll want to reread it later or if there was a part that really stuck in my brain somehow. otherwise i kinda hesitate to rec fics? everyone likes what they like and idk what that is, and it's so personal, and sometimes you have to be in the mood for something, that a universal rec is so hard! ahhhh i'm sorry this is so wishy-washy.

wrt to naruto fic inspo, i feel like i read every si/oc fic out there up to 2020. (probably not true given the immensity of the nrt fandom, but you get the idea.) what an incredible, amazing, creative genre of fic. i say the following with nothing but love and sincere respect: some of the si fics out there are a lot more immature than others, or didn't hold up to the initial draw when i reread them, but 1) if it's not my thing i can just leave and 2) there's so much charm in everyone's vision! power fantasy or trope deconstruction or world-building interrogation--i love it!

i've mentioned this in the comments (and maybe on here?) at various points, but i'll say it again: tcba is at least as much a love letter to naruto si/oc fic as it is a naruto fanfiction. sure, it's my take on the concept, but it's a fic that probably doesn't make sense unless you're already at least a little bit into naruto si conventions. (the chuunin exams being the least of the fic hurdles lmao) and that's basically to say, tcba couldn't exist w/o all those other fics and authors.

Fallow Fields by zarinthel

For every rising star that the shinobi world produces, a hundred other geniuses are chewed up and spit out. Seiko crawls out of that grinder, only to find that she still has the rest of her life to face head on.

another si that is named seiko. completely embarrassed that i used the name as well without realizing, especially since this fic is so excellent and i would hate to cramp on the author's style.

a fic that is more focused on a slice of life story than an endless power grind, though the si does get a chance to be badass and awesome.

Glass Marionette by Haunted_Frost

It takes time to process the memories, but by the time Kankuro becomes a student at the Sunagakure Academy, he's certain he knows: he's in the Naruto universe, a village away, and he's standing next to a ticking time bomb at all times. One that he has an unfortunate urge to hug and tuck in for bed. Well, at least he gets to indulge in his inner theater kid with the whole puppet thing. That's a bonus. If he can just manage to wait out the worst of it, he might even become strong enough to make a difference in the upcoming war.

si into kankuro methodically destroys canon and makes a happy ending for people in under 100k words. marvelous, gay, and it's suna centric.

If 3 Reincarnated Ninja Were Fighting a Moon Goddess and One of Them Got Killed With a Rock, Would That Be Fucked Up Or What by mordox

Three random idiots were transmigrated into bodies of Konoha toddlers during the kyuubi attack. Each thinking they’re the only one who remembers a past life, they each try to hide it. Coincidentally, they are all assigned to Hatake Kakashi’s genin team since they were only average academy students and don’t have parents to complain about their children being failed via bell test, which happened with the last three teams he was assigned. What follows is three fools trying to hide their knowledge from each other and their jounin-sensei while desperately trying to reach chunin fast enough that Kakashi can teach the actual team seven, and a jounin-sensei who is very confused by his three genin but has so few (read: zero) points of reference for normal twelve year olds raised during peacetime that he can’t tell if they’re weird or not.

fucking hilarious. i'm not usually into multi-inserts but oh my GOD these three are disasters, and kakashi is just so confused. a series of assumptions from all three PLUS kakashi convincing them all that they're Normal.

Someone with a little extra knowledge up her sleeve. Unfortunately for Itachi, the Uchiha's abysmal luck with siblings has given him… Kaeru.

another zarinthel fic bc they are a super skilled and i appreciate them. completed fic. a genuinely good subversion of usual si tropes while still making the si op and kick ass. she's just uh. a little mentally ill about it. the entire time. and we love that for her.
