Headcanons -- Proposals

Boundshipping -- Bakura does a close recreation of how his father asked his mother to marry him (at least, based on the stories that he remembers): he saves up to buy a house, and tells Yuugi that he'd like to share his home with him for the rest of his life. Needless to say, Yuugi cries, says yes, and insists that they have multiple game rooms to fit their respective collections. In that order. Kleptoshipping -- Bakura kind of just stuck an engagement ring on Yuugi's finger when he was sleeping one night, and when Yuugi questioned the ring, he sneered at him: "What, am I not allowed to stake my claim on what's mine?" Yuugi responds by doing the same thing with Bakura a week or so later. Bakura acts like he doesn't notice or care, but he preens and smiles at it when he thinks nobody's looking. Fragileshipping -- Atem, openly nervous and far more awkward than one would expect, asks Ryou to go to KaibaLand with him to test out the new dueling arena. He gives Ryou a deck that he "wants him to try", though the poor guy nearly fumbles handing it to him at least twice. Ryou thinks something's up, but doesn't say anything...until he realizes the deck Atem gave him was a custom variant on the Destiny board/occult deck that Bakura used at battle city. A wedding-themed variant, specifically. The win condition involved the player to spell out the words: "I WILL". The moment Ryou realized what was going on, he hopped off the platform, ran to Atem, and pulled him into a kiss so long and passionate that they both had to break for air. ...Before accepting with a cheeky "I will," of course. Liberashipping -- Marik had a really elaborate proposal planned. He was going to take Yuugi on a moonlight picnic, wait until the moon was brightest and then propose with all of the debonair charm of a romance novel hero. But then...right when Marik was about to propose... Yuugi went down on one knee. "Marik Ishtar," he said, "Would you do me the honor of letting me be your wings, and take your family name?" Marik wasn't sure whether to laugh at how cheesy that was or cry because Yuugi wanted to become an Ishtar. He did both. Riftshipping -- Polygamy isn't exactly legal, but a little thing like that wouldn't stop TKB from asking his partners to be with him forever. ...At least, that's what he thought, but Ryou and Yuugi beat him to the punch. They set up a private 'wedding' in their shared house for the three of them, complete with dancing, vows, and a "Honeymoon suite" that Ryou spent at least a month making the props for. Then they went on their actual honeymoon: A several-month long trip around the world (paid for by Kaiba as his 'wedding' present to three of his most useful employees AND NOTHING ELSE) where they played games, tasted new foods, and enjoyed their time spent with each other.

1. Canon I outright reject

Despite all of the contradictions between the separate canons (anime, manga, sub, dub ect) I find it hard to pick an aspect of it that I refuse to find merit in, even aspects that are painful to me (Seto removing the locket in DSOD T-T)

My personal canon when it comes to Seto tends to be a mixture of anime sub (filler arcs included), and manga canon and DSOD, and I do not consider the Toei anime series to be canon because of the discrepancies with the manga.

I think an aspect of canon I outright reject is the idea that the Mind Crush made him a better person and “purged the evil” in him.

I have a very strong attachment to early manga Seto and I cannot see him as a uniquely evil character. The mind crush itself I find to be a disappointing climax to the Death T arc, but many lovely people in the fandom have made lots of touching art on the subject matter so I wouldn’t say I entirely detest it, but the idea that if he had not received the penalty games he would have been doomed (even if it’s strongly implied by the canon) I just cannot accept (and I think it flattens him). But that’s just a personal thing.

2. A canon or headcanon hill I will die on

Ohh I have several so probably I will end up leaving out some T-T I warn you beforehand they’re mostly super sad 😭

Two aspects that are ultimately up to interpretation but that I consider ultimately canon is that 1. Seto suffers from hallucinations and 2. Seto struggles with suicidal ideation. Another hill I will die on is that Seto’s childhood and adolescent experiences *before* and *after* his six years with Gozaburo were equally as scarring for him.

As for headcanons, a strong one I have is Seto being autistic. Another one is that he really admired Gozaburo, and never really disliked him despite the way he was treated until they had their ideological clash in respect to war as Seto began to grow into a teen with his own ideas and even then, I headcanon that Seto still saw it as a rivalry (kind of like the one he had with Atem later) and did not see himself as his victim.

I also headcanon that Seto was forced to be a child athlete by him, exploiting his already existent love for sports and competition.

I also headcanon that Gozaburo’s wife was European and a Christian Catholic and Gozaburo adopted her religious practices and tried to impose them on Seto as well, who grew to dislike religion for this reason.

I realize they’re all quite sad but I also have this hc that Seto struggles with poor body image and disordered eating and that his biological father turned to alcoholism after the death of their biological mother, and Seto had to stay home to care for both him and Mokuba, so the only time he went to school was when he was taken in by his relatives.

I also headcanon that he used books as an escapism throughout his life and as we can see has adopted a manner of speaking that’s very literary. He loves to write and writes a lot anytime he has the time to do so, but most of the time discards what he has written or is too embarrassed to ever show it to anyone, even Mokuba. In general I have a strong headcanon that he is very sensitive about art.

An happier hc I have is that he really loves amusement parks. Not just what they represent and the fact it’s his and Mokuba’s dream, but like, just attending and getting to do the most thrilling rides. And that his complex about winning is not limited to the things he considers “serious”, but just about anything. He could be playing the most silly game and will still treat it as a matter of life and death.

kind of a halloween request I suppose? may I get headcanons on how the yugioh boys (seto, yami, yugi, joey, tristan, duke) would react to finding out their f! s/o was a werewolf (like the twilight kind that can shift on demand), when she has to protect them and has no choice but to reveal it? I think it would be interesting considering the whole yugi has a pharaoh who possesses him thing 😂

Seto Kaiba, Yugi Muto, Yami Yugi, Joey Wheeler, Tristan Taylor, and Duke Devlin

Yami/Atem

He found out you’re a werewolf during battle city. He was cornered by Marik's men and they weren’t looking for a duel. They were beaten by Yami fair and square but unfortunately for him they’re all sore losers.

It wasn’t looking good for him. He was surrounded by three men so he could only do so much against them. He’s 5’2 and 97 pounds.

Yami was getting beaten and doing all he could to protect the millennium puzzle.

You happened to see your beloved pharaoh in trouble and you couldn’t stand to see him get beaten so badly. Two men were holding him while the third was punching at Yami.

You transformed in a werewolf and howled to grab their attention. Upon your growls and razor sharp teeth shown the four were all petrified. You attack the men in robes with warning bites and growls. They ran for their lives in fear. A werewolf should be impossible yet here you are proving them wrong. Their fear and shock consumed them as they ran away with their tails between their legs.

Yami didn’t recognize you at first but he soon recognized you due to your clothing and eyes. As a werewolf you keep your height, hair, hair color, eye color, and voice. Your fur matches your hair and your clothing are the same as he seen before he began dueling.

"My queen, is it really you..?" Yami asked with his jaw dropped.

"Yes... it's me. I'm a werewolf. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner. I was too afraid to. I wasn't sure how you would react."

Yami grabs your black clawed hands. Though razor sharp he shows no fear to you. He's giving you a reassuring smile.

"You should never fear speaking to me. I respect honesty but more importantly I respect you. Werewolf or not, you're still my queen."

You two hug and when Yami looks at you again you're transformed back into your human form. You both hold hands as you leave the alleyway.

Yugi Muto

Yugi was in big trouble when dartz had his soul trapped and transferred it into a duel monster. Yugi stood as a soldier awaiting the next attack on Yami.

Of course you couldn't have this be. Dartz has trapped the souls of your friends and your beloved Yugi. All the commands given to him wasn't within his heart. He would never hurt his friends or allow them to get hurt. Yami had no choice but to duel Dartz holding the souls of his friends.

Having enough you transform into a werewolf to protect Yugi and your friends against Dartz. Everyone became shocked by your transformation and howl. Dartz never saw it coming as you lunge at him attacking with full force.

The duel ended but thanks to you defeating the lost king of Atlantis. Yami was shocked by your defeat towards Dartz. All the souls returned to their rightful place and Yugi was within your arms again.

You cry tears of joy squishing him into a hug with your werewolf strength. Poor Yugi was relieved to be back but he was having a hard time breathing against such strength. When you realized what was happening to him you let go of him, apologizing.

He didn't mind the hug but you could see in his eyes how happy he was to see you even as a werewolf. Out of everyone he was the most surprised but he was also the quickest to accept it.

Your eyes, clothing and hair style stayed the same. Though your body is covered in fur matching in color with your natural hair color you still look so beautiful to him.

"Yugi I'm sorry I didn't tell you. It should've been sooner but I couldn't find the courage to. I feared I would scare you. I realize I was wrong from the looks of your cute smile."

"You're right. I still love you sweetheart but I don't want any secrets between us."

"I understand Yugi. I love you."

"I'll always love you." He reassures while holding your clawed hand.

You explain to the others what happened after you transform back to your human form. You found the courage to thanks to your encouraging boyfriend and king of games. Everyone was happy to be reunited.

Seto Kaiba

Kaiba was in some deep trouble at duelist kingdom. He was surrounded by men sent by Pegasus. Two of them were holding guns pointed directly at him. You knew Kaiba did all he could to try saving Mokuba but this was proving difficult.

You couldn't stand the thought of Kaiba getting shot at by bullets. He's reckless at times so you knew he would try running. You transform and growl loud enough to be compared to a lion. You threw their guns out of their hands in one swipe of your black razor sharp claws. They ran off not knowing what you were.

Kaiba knew it was you who saved him. His observant eyes recognizing your hair, eyes, and clothes. In your true form you look almost the same as your human self only you're covered in fur plus you have fluffy pointed ears and a tail.

"Seto you're okay! I was so worried you would be injured or worse!"

"I'm sorry I worried you.." He said in a soft tone. "Why didn't you tell me..?" He said with saddened blue eyes.

"I was afraid I'd scare you off.. that maybe you wouldn't want to date me anymore."

"I would never do that to you. You'll always be mine. You're my world."

You kiss Kaiba with your tail wagging. He kisses back eagerly. You explain to him you arrived to duelist kingdom to help him. You're equally as worried about Mokuba. You two head into the woods as you talk.

Joey Wheeler

It was after school and Joey was getting robbed by a gang. It was a group of guys. Joey was out numbered and he earned the money in his wallet for his sister's surgery.

You were walking back home when you noticed the awful situation Joey was in. You saw him getting beaten by the brutes. You decide to transform and scare them off. Thankfully you did since you didn't want to fight. It wouldn't be fair since you're so powerful and you don't wish to hurt others unless its self defense.

The gang members didn't bother fighting. They ran off as you howl and chase them away.

Joey was on the ground wondering what had happened. He couldn't believe his eyes. He didn't realize it was you until you talk.

"Is it really you?"

"Yes Joey it's me."

He looked at you up and down at your werewolf form. Same outfit, hairstyle and eyes. He thought you looked cute as a werewolf and complimented you. You giggle kissing his cheek since he's adorable himself.

He asks why you didn't tell him and you said you were afraid of scaring him. He laughed it off and said you shouldn't be afraid of telling him anything.

"I love ya no matter what, sweetie." He reassured.

After you transformed back into your human form he walked you home and listened to you about your werewolf background.

Tristan Taylor

Tristan was out on his motorcycle searching for Joey who had run after Mai. He had no idea Joey was currently dueling Valon.

Tristan had to get gas so he went off to a gas station. It was late at night so he no one was around as he was getting robbed by two men. He did his best to fight them off from stealing his wallet and keys.

You happened to be nearby since you were also searching for Joey. When you saw Tristan you screamed and decided you had no choice but to transform.

In your werewolf form you fought the two men. Tristan was speechless. When you said his name he knew it was you. He was unsure at first since he didn't think werewolves existed but who cares now that he knows he is dating one.

"Babe you're really a werewolf??"

"Yes, I'm sorry I didn't tell you the truth. I wanted to wait for the right time to tell you."

"I'm glad you weren't planning to keep it from me."

"And I'm glad you took the news so well." You kiss his cheek.

Tristan hugs you and expresses how his feelings for you don't change. He does comment how he thinks nothing else will surprise him since he's already seen so much in his lifetime.

Duke Devlin

Duke got himself into a heated argument about dungeon dice monsters with a group of duelists from his school. They made fun of his game and insulted his looks as well. Clearly jealousy and hatred for his fame in the dueling community.

Insults soon turned to pushing then punches. The fight took place at the back of the school and it was after school when no one was around.

You heard the yelling and arrived to the scene in curiosity. As you suspected it was a fight but you didn't think your boyfriend would be involved! Four students were kicking him while he was on the ground.

You knew they wouldn't recognize you so you transformed. Maybe your human form wasn't any match against them but your true form was. You howled and growled matching in volume with a wolf. They suspected a wolf at first but when they realized it was a werewolf they all panicked.

You're glad you didn't have to resort to attacking them but you're sure you must've scared Duke. Looking over to him you notice he is still sitting on the ground. He is still perplexed by the situation. When you speak his green eyes widened.

"Duke please say something. Anything. I want to know what you think."

"I'm shocked werewolves exist.. but this doesn't change our relationship. I'm sure you had your reasons for keeping it from me." He smiles while standing up.

"Yes I waiting for the right time to tell you."

"I understand. I think you better change back before someone else might see you. Your secret is safe with me."

You transform back to a human but Duke was secretly a tiny bit sad by it since he found your werewolf form so cute.

You two walked to his car so he could drop you off home. His smile never faltered as he looked your direction. You're very happy he finally knows. During the drive you made sure to explain your werewolf background to him some more. As he was driving he held your hand the whole way home.

Yu-Gi-Oh!

2) …my three favorite characters and why I love them so much.

Seto Kaiba has been my favorite from the start. All the versions of him have their value and I enjoy them all, but my personal favorite version of the batch is the manga’s version of the character. The loneliness, his internal struggle that seems viscerally painful, the maladaptive behaviors and the search for understanding, and how it’s apparent he does want to connect with other people but he can’t understand this about himself or accept it. He’s so layered and yet the ambiguity is also relatable --- the way emotions cloud and blur, how we don’t have the words for things. And he’s fascinating and morally grey and allows an outlet for the heightened emotions we sometimes need to see, to connect with to understand this feeling is shared, even as he seems achingly alone, even as he achingly reaches out to others. The theme of grief is also very intense within this character while having a kind of subtly, the way these emotions fold into and hide in other emotions.

Mokuba Kaiba is next. Again I enjoy all the versions of this character but the manga’s version is my personal favorite. I feel he’s a very complex character in the manga’s canon with layers of emotion and a history which he carries and it’s only overshadowed due to him not being a duelist character. He’s so headstrong and loyal and he harbors anger, resentment, loneliness, love and devotion, and he’s incredibly proactive. Something that feels a little overlooked about him in canon is that Mokuba *also* explodes at Seto at Death-T, which is not to remotely excuse what happens later on at all, but rather it shows how the strain of everything had worn both of them down and left neither of them able to handle this.

Noa Kaiba is my third favorite character. A dark isolated attention-seeking and self-destructive doomed character who doesn’t really know what love is and is shocked to discover his capacity to love, that he can love and does love. There’s a certain desperation within Noa’s initial plan, abruptly kidnapping everyone with this hopeless idea that maybe he can just walk back into life as the Kaiba heir when that was never going to be possible, and really he just needed needed needed to interact with people from the outside even as all this hatred burned inside him.

12) …what attracted me into checking it out.

I’ve been a fan for a long time, since the show first aired Duelist Kingdom in the United States, although I can’t recall what exact episode I started with but I know it wasn’t the very start. I also read the manga as it was translated and published by VIZ.

15) …which character I would choose for the chopping block if I knew the writers wanted to kill someone.

If I’m entirely honest, even if there are issues in the writing, I kind of get the impression death was an important theme to Kazuki Takahashi, something he wanted to explore in some form, and he quite literally said this in an interview as well. Which is to say that despite the problems, I feel Yugi saying farewell to Atem as Atem left the world was something meaningful to KT in some form even if I feel I shouldn’t make guesses beyond that. I do think it’s very fair to dislike this ending or to discuss and point out the issues, but previous discussions could also be guilty of neglecting the personal angle this storybeat may have carried and how people do indeed have to say goodbye sometimes or watch someone they love die. Which is to say, I don’t want to change what may have been meaningful.

Tristan Taylor / Hiroto Honda

8) …a headcanon I have about this character.

I think he was kind of the family baby while his sister had “eldest daughter syndrome” in some form. I think he helped keep Jonouchi stable before the beginning of canon.

9) …which of their relationships I would have cultivated more if it were up to me (both romantic and platonic).

Honda’s kind of left in the background of the story but he’s also a constant presence through the story. He’s given personal relationships with Jonouchi and Otogi. I very much like the quiet loyalty he felt towards Mokuba. I wouldn’t mind more Honda and Mokuba content in that way, the way people can come to care about each other quietly. Also – Blankey! Imagine more Blankey scenes!

10) …if I liked them immediately or if took a while before I warmed up to their character. Alternatively, if I disliked them immediately or if they lost my trust as their story progressed.

I was neutral towards him for quite a while. I could appreciate him as a loyal friend but it wasn’t as if I personally gravitated towards trying to understand him particularly. I think fandom discussions have been very good for me engaging more with the text, the characters inside the text, what they mean, and how we relate to them, how other real people relate to them, and in turn I’ve been able to understand others as well.

First impression: Mind you I didn't have the full story at the time but I hated him as a kid to the point where he was my model for what I hated in all protagonists going forward </3 Was less about the character himself and more I hated that he always won and could use magic to win instead of being good at cards (8yr old me despised the heart of the cards so much because it made Kaiba lose LOL)

Impression now: Now that I'm older, less one track about Kaiba, and finished the complete story I do like him a lot more (I for sure never finished Battle City or Memory World as a kid or teen so, didn't help). More depth than child me wanted to give him credit for, but I wish the narrative indulged his flaws as flaws more because the way he always wins vs the unfortunate repercussions that has is really interesting to me. It's frustrating seeing like every time it started to build to him having his values challenged only to suddenly drop some kind of excuse for him to just stop thinking.

Favorite moment: In YGO R when he just blasts that guy with Slifer instead of dueling because he's in a hurry. It's my favourite duel of the whole franchise.

Idea for a story: Not really a specific story but I'll only accept Atem Lives AUs if there's some sort of drawback. I don't like resurrection without consequences. I don't mean in like a "came back wrong" kind of way but just like. Needs more uncertainty. Regret. The fear of making the wrong choice. Personal conflict, you know?

Unpopular opinion: Didn't have a sad childhood at all. It was great, in fact! He lived a life of luxury, was kind of a spoiled brat, and if we go off of his memories for MW all his trusted advisors helped ease the burden of leadership for him plenty. I don't think he needs some tragic childhood either, it doesn't add anything substantial to his character for me.

Favorite relationship: Yugi seems obvious, so I'm gonna go with I like how highly he thinks of Jounouchi and their closeness, to the point I guess somehow he can just track Jounouchi with the puzzle sometimes lol

Favorite headcanon: I like when people draw him as being really into loose, flowing clothes and floral prints, things like that,

This will come as no surprise to anyone that follows my blog, but the very obvious answer to this question is @starsasunder . I met them...oh man six, seven years ago? They had a Yuugi blog, and I was just a little bitty personal who was too shy to even promote my own AO3. Through reading their writing, I grew inspired to try my hand at Tumblr RP, and made an Atem / Yami blog. ( Yes, I picked this muse because I wanted the highest chance of being able to write with them ).

And then, to my surprise, they followed me back! I was still too shy to reach out though, and vague posted about admiring people but being too nervous to reach out ( I know, I know. I don't vague post anymore ). Well, apparently my vague post wasn't vague enough, because they sent me a message asking if it was about them and my heart just about exploded out of my chest. It was awkward at first, but now here we are, over half a decade later, talking every day and learning what it means to have a platonic soul mate.

They've taught me so much, and to this day I still continue to learn from them. When they adopt a muse, they put so much love and care into it that you will never find another muse like theirs, even if they are the same canon character. The amount of time and effort behind every character is felt in every aspect of them, from the headcanons to the way that they're written.

Morri is an amazing writer, and I don't think I'll ever stop looking up to them.

but legit like. watching yugioh as a kid like. back before we Knew we were a system?? there was something so comforting abt it. like watching an experience we had but didn't understand that we had. it's like we just Knew that we had a shared experience without knowing exactly how or why

and later on in life reflecting on it like. it rlly Normalized my experience for me and made me feel comforted and seen. by a childrens anime about cardgames!!! like everything abt yugioh always rlly reflected for us in a way that couldn't be conveyed in words (like the over all message of the games being stand-ins for heart-to-heart conversations etc etc and sharing yourself with others)

like as a system we just have endless love for yugioh as a franchise because it opened itself up to be one of the most understanding and sympathetic series for ppl w DID despite it not being directly abt DID (also i'm very autistic abt it)

21. When do you think they were at their happiest?

hmmmmmmm this took me a while, Yugi's a generally happy guy there's a lot that comes to mind but honestly???? as bittersweet as it is, I think it's probably when Atem returns to his heart for that brief moment in DSoD. yeah it's heartbreaking in a way too, but for just a few short moments, Yugi's heart and soul feel complete again. even without getting too shippy like. this was the most important person in his life. he accepted that he would never see him again. the joy he must have felt just getting to see Atem and feel him again must have been overwhelming. and more importantly, it gave him a kind of closure most people who lose a loved one never get. it gave him the confirmation that Atem is happy, that he has no regrets, that Yugi did the right thing letting him go.

Yugi's accepted that he would rather die with Atem than continue living without him. even when his other friends are right there, he shrugs them off and pushes them away. they'll miss him less if he's mean to them and makes them hate him, after all. and he can't see a future without his Other Heart. I can't begin to imagine how painful that had to be for all of them in that moment, how betrayed they must have felt

I love the idea that Yugi goes on to design games for Kaiba Corp after graduation. but I also think that when Suguroku's health finally starts to fail and the future of Kame comes into question, Yugi decides to put in his resignation to focus on continuing his Grandpa's legacy.

but well that's just not acceptable for Kaiba (or Mokuba, depending on when/if Kaiba returns from Aaru. I have slightly different versions of this for different Kaiba scenarios but they're all ultimately pretty much the same)

Black Crown showed promise as a gaming supercenter, before burning down on opening day and leaving an gap in the market for something similar. so Kaiba (or Mokuba) proposes a partnership. Kaiba Corp will invest heavily in Kame, remodeling the residential parts of the building to expand the salesfloor, add room for events and renting games to play on-site, a café, and expanding payroll enough that Yugi can hire more staff and management, so he can own the store and oversee it while still having time to design games for Kaiba Corp as well. he gets a license to sell some exclusive Kaiba Corp games and merchandise, but ultimately tries to keep the homey, small business feel.

👔- is dressing up for social functions something my muse enjoys? Alternatively, do they avoid formal affairs like the plague?

Nope. He hates social functions in general not just because he has to get out of his comfortable clothes, but because everything about them reminds him of being Pharaoh. Also, Atem hates small talk and is pretty horrible at it. He doesn't understand the need to discuss the weather or which team is doing the best in sports. It's a waste of his time and so generally in social situations he just stands there awkwardly until someone speaks to him and then usually answers in the most idiotic way you can imagine.

👑- what are my muse’s opinions on monarchy? BWAHAHAHAHAH. Oh god he hates it. Honestly Atem hasn't had a chance to really study how government works in the modern era but he would find it better than monarchy any damn day. Even when he was Pharaoh he hardly ever made a decision on his own. Because he was but one man, and he had a host of advisors for a damn reason. The only time he ever pulled rank was when they were fighting Bakura.

🐶- does my muse have pets? No Atem doesn't have any pets, but it's not because he doesn't want them. It's because I hate writing them and half the time I forget they exist. So it's more me being a crappy writer than him not wanting one. He'd have a cat if he had his way...

🦅- is my muse reverential or disdainful of wildlife? Why? Atem loves most animals, except for snakes. He was bitten when he was younger by a black asp which was sent as an assassination attempt on his life. Even in this body, Anubis thought it was funny that he still have all his scars, so it is clearly visible on his inner left thigh.

What I love about them: OKAY SO, the wonders of watching YGO as a fully grown person: suddenly the snarky, over the top, asshole rival character quickly becomes your favorite. As a kid, I genuinely didn't care at all about him. But that changed SO MUCH, as an adult. IMHO Kaiba may as well be the protagonist of the anime's version of YGO. What I hate about them: Nothing comes to my mind, honestly? Sometimes, you just want your blorbos going off the charts, and that's all A-OK in my book. Although I'll say it: Kaiba's involvement in the 5Ds anime is kinda of confusing ngl. I get that's part of the same timeline, but???? IDK something is off. Maybe there was going to be more, that didn't make it in the end. Favorite Moment/Quote: I honestly could put every single line he has ever said in the dub. But the one that takes the gold for me has to be:

Seto Kaiba: So you got a dweeb army. Is that supposed to make me afraid to attack? Dartz: No, not unless destroying an innocent soul concerns you Seto Kaiba: As the CEO of a Mega Corporation, I have to do that everyday

What I would like to see more focus on: I feel like it would have been nice to see some more of him in both GX and 5Ds (the latter is just to try better explain why was he involved in the big catastrophe of the series, but I also don't mind leaving it up for interpretation and guesses)What I would like to see less focus on: I wished Yugi/Atem wouldn't steal the attention from Kaiba's story, so he isn't reduced into another cheerleader. Favorite pairing with: Yugi/Kaiba, Ishizu Ishtar/Seto Kaiba, Malik Ishtar/Seto Kaiba and Ryuji Otogi/Seto Kaiba are some of the ships I still hold dearly to! Favorite friendship: Kaiba doesn't have any friendships. NO BUT HEAR ME OUT, I like the idea of Pegasus and Kaiba trying to amend for what happened in Duelists' kingdom, as shown in their v close business relationship in GX. I'm glad the anime didn't kill off Pegasus. NOTP: Joey/Kaiba Favorite headcanon: 4kids' dub version of unhinged Kaiba > the sub original and more down to earth Kaiba. I said it, and I'll keep saying it: This is the exact reason I loved this character. "bUt iTs nOt FaiThFul tO tHe SoURcE mAtEriaL" I can hear ppl cry about it, and I'll keep supporting dubbed Kaiba's assholery in that version. Even if it comes at the cost of the story/context of many things changing. It's a price I'm willing to pay.

Ahsoka Tano

What I love about them: Ahsoka's behind the scenes production story is genuinely interesting, in a time and period where nobody feels like putting effort into anything, and just resort to insulting others at the slightest bit of criticism! It's refreshing and very inspiring! When TCW was in production, they decided to give Anakin a padawan, and they KNEW the reception to the idea wouldn't be a warm one from the community. So, instead of throwing a tantrum, the team EMBRACED that and worked around it. So Ahsoka would gradually gain the audience's interest, as she also grew as a character. Ahsoka IS intentionally written as an unlikeable brat in the first 2 seasons, and in the later seasons we see how much she matured. The effort paid off, and Ahsoka is now held up as one of the best prequels era characters. What I hate about them: Filoni is setting out to undo all the hardwork they put into her, via overexposure. Ever since the Mandalorian show, she suddenly became the bridge to EVERYTHING. Even though, her actions shouldn't really give her that much influence or position to begin with. Favorite Moment/Quote:

"You're A Good Soldier Rex. So Is Every One Of Those Men Down There. They May Be Willing To Die, But I Am Not Going To Be The One Who Kills Them."

What I would like to see more focus on: I'd love to see some more of her bond and connection with Plo Koon. We only get a 5 secs clip, in the first season of TCW of them meeting, and this is never expanded on. Which IMO is such a big missed opportunity. What I would like to see less focus on: STOP FILONI'S ANTI-JEDI PROPAGANDAAAA Favorite pairing with: Rex/Ahsoka Favorite friendship: Ahsoka & Anakin, Ahsoka & Padmé, Ahsoka & Barriss. Honestly? I could go off. NOTP: Any form of Master/padawan ship. This is something I'm not interested in to begin with, and that doesn't go away even after she leaves the order or ages over time. That just isn't my cup of tea - So basically: Sabine/Ahsoka and Anakin/Ahsoka. Favorite headcanon: I can't hear Filoni, she is not going around blaming the jedi for their own genocide. She also doesn't go around calling herself a jedi knight, whenever it is convenient to her. She left the order in her own accords, and she has to live with that fact.

Anzu’s top love languages are Words of Affirmation and Physical Touch. She’s always been the one to know what to say in most situations — she is the emotional support, the caregiver, the shoulder to lean on, and that extends to her romantic relationships as well. She may struggle, at first, to express her initial feelings ( it’s always scary confessing your true feelings to someone you really like, hoping that they are reciprocated — or at the very least, will let you down gently ), but afterwards, she will always be there to offer encouragement, praise, enthusiasm, and most of all, love. She isn’t one for grand gestures so much as the little, inconspicuous ways you might show you care for someone. Absent-minded touches like a hand on their arm or knee, leaning against their shoulder, head in their lap, etc. When she’s not showing her love through actions, Anzu is telling them how she feels; honestly and earnestly. 

As for how she feels about love as a concept? She’s very much a romantic. She wants the fairytale ending, even if she wouldn’t necessarily admit it aloud — especially to the guys. She can already hear Jounouchi and Honda gagging, lmao. While she isn’t naïve enough anymore to think that love has to be perfect or that she has to fall for a handsome prince or pharaoh, I think she still carries the hope that she’ll have the sort of love that lasts forever; the kind of love and devotion her parents didn’t have.

Anzu isn’t possessive over material things, but she sure is possessive of “her people”. I think the most obvious case is Yuugi. In canon it can be argued it’s because she has feelings for him, and we see her visibly upset any time someone flirts with him, but my personal interpretation from my own worldbuilding is that it’s because for a long time she was his only friend. She was, in a selfish sort of way, needed by him and that made her feel special and important in his life. She was the first one to step in and defend him from bullies. And I think when Jounouchi and Honda joined the mix, there was a point in the beginning where Anzu felt threatened, because she could feel herself being replaced as Yuugi’s Best Friend™ — suddenly she wasn’t his only friend anymore, suddenly he could relate to someone better than her and slowly Jounouchi filled a void she couldn’t. And then he solved the Puzzle and Atem filled an even bigger void, a monumental one that she couldn’t begin to fill herself. 

She obviously doesn’t hold any ill will towards Jounouchi or Honda or anyone else, but it was definitely a hard pill to swallow that she wasn’t as depended on as she used to be. Regardless of any changes in dynamics in the group, Yuugi will always be someone she’s very protective and possessive over, in the sense that she values their friendship so much and they have seen each other at their worst, at their most embarrassing, etc. 

How she expresses that possessiveness is pretty obvious. She’ll get visibly ruffled and defensive, and in the case of any romantic partners, she definitely has the capacity to be petty. Don’t flirt with her significant other, especially in front of her face, unless you want your ears boxed. To clarify, she’s never possessive to the point of being toxic, it’s just that she wants boundaries to be respected and when they aren’t she will go feral.

Some more YuGiOh headcanons because apparently people seem to like my dumb opinions.

All of these happen during the main series unless stated otherwise!

One of the reasons Mai earns a lot of respect for Joey in the first season is because he respected her as a duelist and fought as such, despite the fact she's a girl. A lot of times her being a girl simply make it so guys go easy on her, fawn over her. That's why getting star chips wasn't a challenge for her, as well as why when Joey showed her respect as a strong duelist, it gave her a sense of respect for him in a small way. Also why she wanted a rematch so bad.

Rex and Weevil don't actually have many friends, despite their skill and fame. Most people find them insufferable, unsurprisingly. They mostly stick together, and genuinely have become close friends.

Mako is the spitting image of his father, and he knows it. It makes him very happy.

Atem dislikes horror movies, but especially mummy ones, for obvious reasons.

Yugi's grandpa was confused for quite a while when he could hear Yugi talking to himself in his room. It was especially confusing whenever Yugi seemed to address himself as if he was a seperate person. Of course, when Yugi's grandpa learned about Atem, it all made a lot of sense.

Yugi's grandpa and Atem really enjoy talking about card games together, as they both feel they can learn a lot from the other. It's a mutual "you're cool" agreement, though it took a bit for Yugi's grandpa to seperate Atem from his grandson

While Joey appreciates Tristan helping Serenity a lot in S2 and such, he still beats the shit out of him for lying to her to make her like him. Tristan ends up agreeing he kinda deserved it.

Yugi has forgotten his puzzle at least once when in a rush to get to school. While Atem was understanding, Yugi was incredibly anxious all day and has been much more careful afterword.

The high school teachers have just kinda accepted that kids will be leaving for duel tournaments, as being a duelist is a completely viable career choice here. That doesn't mean that Joey and Yugi don't return to plenty of work to do, though.

Atem thinks gender stereotypes are stupid, and enjoys wearing/doing things traditionally seen as "feminine". No one's going to tell the king of games he can't wear a skirt and makeup, after all.

After the main series, they all play DND on the weekends.

Pegasus listens almost exclusively to classical music, and knows how to play the piano at least a little.

Hello. I apologize for the delay in answering this. Thank you for the ask.

1. My first impression of them

I tend to not have overt emotional reactions to media, and it takes time for me to be able to pin down my feelings on characters if I do. I probably started out liking Yugi more than Jonouchi just because I personally relate less to extroverts and seemingly jollier characters.

2. When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you’ve sent me a character I don’t like)

I liked Yugi from the start I think. I had also enjoyed Rivalshipping before entering fandom and thought it was a gentle ship pairing a kind and optimistic soul with a gloomy angrier one and there was the hope for understanding.

I was alright with Jonouchi. After entering fandom and properly interacting with other fans, my friend the-cryptographer really helped me to see the depth and nuance within Jonouchi. He’s struggled and been lonely, he wants to be useful, he can be passive-aggressive and sharp-edged, he puts on a front and tries to be strong and cheerful.

12. Sexuality hc!

If I’m honest, I tend to not hold super firm ideas on character’s sexual orientations when it comes to playing in fandom. I can see Yugi and Jonouchi being bisexual and struggling with differing degrees of internalized homophobia. Jonouchi in particular I think would struggle with some internalized homophobia given his personal history and how he tries to seem masculine. Hopefully they can both accept themselves.

16. A childhood headcanon

Jonouchi had to make his own meals a lot from a younger age as his mother was gone and his father wasn’t stepping up. I feel current Jonouchi is decent at cooking because of this.

18. How do you think they were as a kid? (Like, were they shy, noisy, wild, etc)

I think Yugi struggled with shyness and was maybe pulled away from the other kids, preferring to play games alone. I also think he tried to be friendly with those who approached him, though he was also an awkward and quiet kid who maybe wasn’t able to keep them interested and didn’t seek out company too well on his own.

I think Jonouchi was a more energetic child who could act out at times and be rowdy, and would sometimes do attention-seeking things to excite his classmates --- like climbing trees and sneaking into places he wasn’t meant to be as they watched.

23. Future headcanon

Yugi might adopt a cat.

When Sugoroku Mutou’s health begins failing, Yugi won’t reach out for emotional support too well and instead he’ll retreat into an inner world. We had seen that happen with Atem’s fate as well.

26. When do you think they were being “themselves” the most?

I think their friendship with each other and with Anzu and Honda and Atem are their heartlines. I think the times we see them casually playing games together is the answer. The company and playfulness they shared.

Rivalshipping Day #3

Just wanna say, this is basically an explanation of my DSOD headcanon for why Seto goes after Atem so hard to defeat him. It also explains my headcanon for why/how I typically only ship Yugi and Seto in a post-canon way. But I’ll get into that even more with tomorrow’s prompts. Let’s get ready to angst! 

Rivalshipping Week 2021: Denial/Acceptance

We rarely get into a screaming match. Hell, I’m not prone to them myself with anyone, much less my own significant other. Yet, as I sit on the couch in a huff, I somewhat enjoy the feeling of the anger mixing with adrenaline in my veins. It makes me feel vindicated. It makes me feel strong. It’s strong enough to bury the hurt that elevated my voice’s volume to new heights in the confrontation with Seto.

At the end of the day, I get it. I really do. I know exactly where he’s coming from. It’s hard to be trapped in one of the stages of grief. I thought he understood that too, but sometimes the process can create a brain fog that blinds you to all of the facts that you already know. It’s not Seto’s fault he’s blind and it’s not my fault that sometimes I am too when I cry in the middle of the night.

Loss turns the line between denial and acceptance into a game of hopscotch. You hop from one side to the other based on where the pebble falls and it’s one fucked up pebble. It changes shape. Sometimes it’s as simple as a single sound or a picture on your phone and other times it’s a dream that won’t let you go from the second your close your eyes.

Like I said, I get it. I am in the same game he is, but I just didn’t know how different our game strategies were.

I found myself wandering the halls of KaibaCorp, taking my time going home to the shop if only to brainstorm in the quiet hallways for my new game. Not that I didn’t want to go home to Kibou and Jichan, but I don’t always go into the office for my game development and I feel I’d be forgiven for wanting just an hour to myself as a parent. Jichan and Kibou’s bond is one that I envy somewhat. He’s not just a caregiver, he’s a friend to my son. Me? I have to be that and so much more and Seto is usually the one to hear me grumble in frustration at the typical stresses of parenthood.

So I wandered on my feet and let my mind do the same to the point that I ended up in a part of the tower that I had never seen. I felt like I had been there before and wondered if these were renovated hallways from the destruction of the Death-T games. Something about them called to me and I wandered deeper into the depths of the building. The hallways felt sterile and metallic, almost like a technologically advanced haunted house. 

When I came upon the room with the wide, open floor, I was confused. So much space, why not do anything more with it? Was this going to be a surprise testing site for my new game? Or was it for Mokuba? I had no idea. I stepped into the middle of the room and heard some beeping noises. It’s not uncommon to hear in a building where we design technologically involved games. But when the lights around me started to turn on and change color, something in my stomach sank

The room grew dark despite the lights. I spun around multiple times to try and make sense of what I was seeing. The room was suddenly transformed into a…cathedral? I tilted my head and looked up at the overly high ceiling. It felt like being in a deep cave with walls that shone with glimmering marble. I smiled. Of course he could design something so beautiful and lifelike. Stained glass windows were along where I assumed the walls of the room were yet pews were either absent or farther away than I cared to notice. It was grand in scale and in realism.

I smiled as I took it all in, but it was to be short lived. The smile was gone in less than a second when I heard footsteps approach me. They echoed as if the high ceilings and wide expanse were real. I turned toward the sound to see someone all too familiar approach me. My heart lurched in my chest painfully. Tears stung my eyes. I shook my head violently. It was all a dream. It was all a virtual vision. That’s Seto’s version of a dream, anyway.

The virtual figure stopped just short of where I stood, its arms muscular and its eyes piercing as it looked at me. The tears poured out of mine as I met the crimson eyed gaze. 

“Mou Hitori No Boku?”

And now here I am, breathless from the memory of what I found this evening and from the exertion of screaming at my boyfriend. I had stood in that room staring at the likeness of my lost love for who knows how long. It never spoke, but it moved and showed expressions that could have conveyed emotion if it had been real. I sprinted out of there so quickly I didn’t even care if I ran into the very real wall behind the virtual rendering, but I just couldn’t look at it anymore. I couldn’t look at him anymore.

I was in Seto’s office almost immediately. My face was stained with tears and I couldn’t tell if they were hurt or anger, so I decided to share both with him. Even mere minutes later, I can only piece together parts of the ensuing argument. 

“What the fuck is that?” I remember asking.

He played dumb at first, but I got it out of him. He was pretending to duel my other self.

“Why? Why is that something you want?” I remember asking.

“You”

I remember that clear as day. That was his one-word response. I had stared at him, allowing him to recognize that I was calling his bluff. There was more to it and I knew it. He took the hint and continued.

“You told me if you get a choice in the next life, you choose him.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat. My eyelashes were heavy with tears.

Seto’s gaze was hard and almost a deep glare as he looked me dead in the eyes as he voiced what he said next. “I’m better for you. I give you what you need. He left you, I won’t. You need to accept that he was no good for you and move on.”

My breathing became erratic and my thoughts were racing at a mile a minute.

“So what?” I asked. “You think if you kick his imaginary ass at some card game you…win the right to keep me?”

“Yugi-“

“I’m not a prize to be won!” I screamed. 

He screamed back at me, telling me how my other self wasn’t worth his spit as a lover and father. I wanted to slap him at the latter comment. I had screamed back at him that Atem couldn’t be blamed for that. His shortcoming was his death, yes, but it was inevitable.

“That’s why you have to let it go,” Seto yelled.

“Maybe you need to come out of your denial that maybe, just maybe he was the best thing to ever happen to me!” I yelled back. 

“Then what the fuck am I?” he retorted. “Just someone you fuck to get free help with your bastard child? You’re just a gold digger?” 

“Fuck you!” 

“Tell me you love me!”

“I love you.” I tell the truth.

“Say it!” he screamed with all his might. “Say you love me more than you loved him.”

“No!” I can’t lie. 

“You say I’m in denial? You say you’ve moved on but you haven’t, Yugi!”

“I have his kid! How the fuck do you want me to feel?”

“Like I could be better for you and his kid than he ever could be! How do you know he would have stayed with you had he won?”

“Go to hell! You can’t just say you accept my decision one second and then try to beat a ghost for the right to me behind my back!” I scream back. 

There was more, but the meat of the issue reverberates in my head. I feel a headache coming on. I lean back over the side of the couch in the corner of his office. He’s hunched over his desk, breathing deeply with his back to me. I turn my head slowly to look at him. 

“You…you help me make sense of it,” I say just above a whisper. My voice is feeling rough and hoarse from the screaming.

He eventually turns and looks at me after a few moments of silence. “Make sense of what?”

“The hurt. The confusion. You make the loneliness go away. I love you because of all that. You do it with little to no effort.”

He hangs his head and says nothing.

“Can’t you accept that you provide me with exactly what I need at this point in my life? That’s important, too, isn’t it?” I say softly. 

“It’s just not enough for eternity, though. Is it?” he asks solemnly.

I bite my lip. “Can you accept that I can love more than one person at a time?”

His glare returns. “Can’t you accept that I can’t do that? I earn everything I have and it’s mine. Solely mine.”

I sit up, anger stirring again even in the now calm atmosphere in the room. “Is that what I am? An accomplishment? Is that why you want to fight him? To feel you earned me?” 

“He did it.”

“By being himself. Not by fighting someone he can’t ever get back.”

“But I can’t-“

“You have me now!” I snap. “I love you. I do. There’s different kinds of love. I love you for you, not because you could defeat him or anyone else. He had me then and maybe someday he’ll have me again but you need to stop chasing ghosts and living in this state of denying yourself the present moment.” 

He stares me down and I can hear the anger in him rising with his haggard breaths. I hold my stance on the couch, not backing down by maintaining eye contact.

“You’re…” his tone is rough but his body suddenly relaxes and his face softens. “You’re just too important to me to lose.”

I feel like crying again as I stand and approach him. I cup his face in my hands. “You’re important to me, too.”

He shakes his head. “But you don’t love me like I love you.”

I kiss him on the lips, my tears mingling in and making the kiss soft and delicate, so I don’t make a mess of them. “Does different really mean invalid? Or are you going to keep living in denial that I don’t just need you; I want you?”

He kisses me roughly, and I press my lips into his right back, not caring anymore about the sorry state of my wet face and lips.

“I wanted to fight him to make you forget him.” 

“You,” I pause, unsure of how to voice my thoughts. I wanted to stay away from the anger now. It was exhausting. “You can’t make me forget him, but… You make me remember what it’s like to love and feel joy again.” 

He looks into my eyes and I swear I see tears threaten to pour out of his blue ones.

“Whether you believe I’m stuck in denial or simply accepting the wrong things in life,” he says, his voice turning serious again. “You need to let me do this. I need to love you the way I need to. Now please, don’t go wandering around like that again or I’ll have your clearance wiped from all areas except your office.”

With that, he turns on his heels and is out the door of his office with the slam of the door. I sigh. I know in my heart that the virtual renderings in the basement aren’t going anywhere. I know nothing will change that. I know I’m still coming to his house tonight to watch a movie with the kids and then make love after they’re asleep. Nothing has changed here.

Yet everything has, and I wonder just how much I’ll need to accept before I can’t stand it anymore. But I’m willing to live in denial with him that any of it could hurt us. Because that’s what you do when you need someone. You give what you can and take what you can from all of it because you’d drown without it.

7. What’s the first thing that changes when they realize they have feelings for the other?

Depends heavily on the perspective. For Seto, he probably realized his feeling ran deep for Atem long after it already occured. All that bullying and chasing and fit-throwing accumulated to his late blooming realization of a crush turned viral in all of his unoccupied headspace.

Forgive my naughtiness in this, but I like to have fun with these two; I think part of the reason some of this comes to light for Seto is that his teenaged hormones pull him out of the childish hair-pulling stage of a crush to accidental fantasies and wet dreams. It's not a sudden epiphany to his feelings, but certainly a frightening concept he avoids for a very long time. Until he can't anymore.

I headcanon that this starts during my favorite filler arc; The KC Grand Championship. There seems to be a shift in Kaiba and his regard to Atem in Waking the Dragons, then suddenly he's a bit more reserved (reserved for Kaiba at least) in KC Grand Championship.

He likes Atem, he likes Atem a lot, and has trusted his life to him. These acts do not pass by Kaiba's forethought lightly. He tries to grow up, to become a provider, to stop running around the playground throwing mud at his schoolyard crush.

Until, ya know, Von Schroder shows up. But still, I think Kaiba's perspectives have shifted around this time. He goes from "let me show off to Atem" to "Let me prove I can provide and support."

But after the final duel between Atem and Yugi and Atem is gone, all that hopeful preperation to show Atem he can be a good man, a supportive partner? Gone. DSOD he loses his shit and doesn't want to hold back on telling Atem just how he feels. Kaiba can't breathe if Atem doesn't know how much his heart aches for that silly little man with the tricolored hair.

Uh, this wasn't meant to be a show analysts and I'm not sure if this even answered the question so I'm moving on...

tldr: Kaiba goes from bully to (hopeful) provider.

20. What do their family/friends think of their relationship?

I love writing Isono in as a pseudo uncle-like character to Seto later on. He, as well as other staff, would probably give Atem the shovel talk. They won't take lightly to seeing their boss hurt in any way, especially after all the emotional hurtles he went through to get here.

I think Atem's friends would be shocked at first, but accepting (I mean, it was pretty obvious). Although, Joey might take it personally for awhile and ghost Atem until Kaiba and him talk a few things out.

25. Who needs more assurance?

I mean... they're both pretty prideful men. Both confident in where they stand and how they operate.

Relationship speaking; I think once they're together, they're both stuck like glue at the heart. They don't doubt the other.

In one of my fics, Night at the Club, Kaiba tells Mai that he can clearly see Atem grinding up against another man on the dance floor, but he has no whisps of jealousy or fears that he will lose Atem. He's secured and confident in their relationship and knows just how much they love each other. Kaiba even asks Mai to dance with him, and openly appreciates her beauty and sexual proess. But not once does he think of Mai as anything more than a luscious friend because his heart is not swayed away from Atem.

In Melting Orangsicles (don't judge me, one day I will finish it! (send me more prompts to get me encouraged to write!)), they're all at a pool and Kaiba notes how sexy his and Atem's friends are. Just like before, however, he never once considers them as perfect to his heart as Atem.

Disclaimer; I'm all for different types of relationships. It just so happens I usually write them as a monogonous couple. Had some people have issue with that before so thought I'd clarify.
