I hav this ungodly hatred of the “damsel in destress” trope, specifically with listener characters. It’s a reason why I like Erik’s work so much, because altho a lot of listeners may be saved by someone, the listener is fighting.

Lovely when they where kidnapped? They where fighting tooth and nail the whooole time. How they got out was them breaking free from Adam’s trance and electrocuting him.

Freelancer when Vega attacked? They shot at Vega, they helped to protect themselves and Caelum as much as they could with their current power, they weren’t just standing around uselessly waiting for Gavin to finish him off, when that ward protecting them feel, they fought back.

Sunshine in the basement? (This is one of my favs) they have absolutely 0 (zero) power. Nothing. They are in the perfect place to just, ‘wait and be saved’. But they don’t know they could be saved, as far as they know, Elliot hasn’t a clue they even loved him. They think the only way to get out is to follow what Blake says. but even when being a compliment captive, they are still, fighting! Every time they talk with Blake and try to get closer to him is them fighting! They are working to try and free themselves from him at all moments because as far as they know, no one is going to come looking for them.

The inversion is good because it plays on a persons fear of being useless. Every listener who’s partner is in the ward feels useless because they are useless, that’s the point, that don’t need saving, their partners do. The people needing saving are fighting with everything that have. Lovely fights, is one of the best fighters in there, and then has all that power taken away when their turned (I’ll call back to this in a bit) freelancer feels like their useless, but their not, Gavin admits later that he would have died if they didn’t help him. They comforted him when they themselves didn’t feel and comfort, they knew he needed it, and that’s incredibly powerful.

Moving on, the next conflict, porter! (Idc if their are other fights and shit in between this I wanna talk about this(:<<<) lovely punching porter! It’s honestly the cherry on the cake for lovely. They, since the beginning, have felt like “the damsel in destress”. They had to be saved by Vincent from Adam twice (him trancing them and the the kidnapping) and then they could finally protect themselves with magic, they won first place for being so powerful!! And then, the same day, they lost all of it. They where saved again. They must have felt absolutely powerless for months. Then, Porter. They meet this guy who, as far as they know, is a massive dick to their partner. So when taking to him, they punch him for being a dick. they do something about it. Sure they wasn’t a place where anyone was in real danger, but they did something with their power to protect Vincent. It’s a very nice ‘full circle’ moment for them. From having Vincent have to stick up for them at every turn (in their mind) them sucker punching Porter for Vincent is just such a nice way to wrap that up. To show that they can and will take care of themselves and others.

Anyway that ramble was really long and it was mostly just supposed to be about why in like all of my fics I’m going to have a scene where the listener character is a bad ass and sticks up for themselves because I hate when the voiceless character is made useless.

This one is angsty, so be warned, but it has immediately become one of my favorite fics I've read in this fandom just for how well-written and meticulously well-characterized it is. The George voice is so good it's out of this world.

An instant classic married-in-Vegas fic. Funny and sweet by turns. The characterization is amazing.

find my way by anonymous (Daniel/Max)

I love it when writers manage to transfer characters to such a wildly different universe (Star Wars in this case!) and still remain so true to the characters, and this does that. It pulled me in so completely in so few words.

sweet relief by anonymous (Daniel/Max)

I did not know it was possible to pack so much love and care and great writing and amazing characterization into a watersports fic, but this genius author did just that.

Amazing, perfect, 10/10 sex pollen fic. I could read a million "sex pollen is what finally gets them together" fics, and this is a wonderful example of that trope.

riches and wonders by anonymous (Daniel/Max)

ADORE everything about this! The world-building! The outsider POV! The way the characters are developed so well without even being in their heads! This has become another instant fav for me. I've already reread it several times.

Not like any other love by anonymous (George/Alex)

The George/Alex angst writers really brought it during this kink meme. This fic hurt me deeply in the most satisfying way. The ending is so fucked up, and I mean that as the HIGHEST possible compliment.

A little apology to Kinn ;)

I may have been too harsh with Kinn because I look at his scenes of jealousy from my and Porsche's perspective. Jealousy is one my fav trope, and for Porsche it is simply a part of being in the relationship, he treats it normally. You can see it when he teases Kinn and when he enjoys seeing Kinn going ape-shit at Vegas. Porsche has no intention of cheating on him and takes jealousy as a game, assuming that Kinn will treat it that way as well and that he doesn't think Porsche would be capable of it.

Unfortunately for him (and me), there is no such thing as "jealousy as a fun little game for couples" for Kinn. For him it is a very serious matter, possibly a life-and-death one (we still don’t know exactly what happened with Tawan, also how it affected Kinn's safety). So in the two scenes where Kinn acted like a dick, which irritated me because "oh no, not again", Kinn had no choice but to act like that, in his character, which is paranoid. It’s just.. Porsche is playful, he smiles in both scenes, but the look on Kinn’s face.. dude goes through all at once: will Porsche hurt me, will he leave, what if Vegas really steals him from me, is it serious, why is Porsche smiling, and then in the bathroom scene - why are they so cLOSE?? And when he doesn’t know how to cope with all the above, he lashes out at Porsche, which is still a dick move, but, well, understandable. Both, Porsche and I misread Kinn :) In our defense, we still have too little information about the Tawan fiasco, maybe we will be properly educated in next episode 👨‍🏫

Clariiiii hiiii!! I just finished all my finals and I haven’t been on this blog in a while, so I’m planning on catching up on ur recent writings but I had to come in here and talk about the anon u just answered about the movies that inspired your works!! Cause I’m obsessed with like genuinely every single one of them and I can SO see how ur inspired by them. Goodfellas is one of my fav movies ever and the comparison between Henry and Tomura...wow. Like u got it...like Henry is ultimately unstable especially by the end of the movie and that kind of thing is already happening with Tomura based on the recent installments of bmb so yeah I absolutely see that. (Also the shinning inspo? Making me very nervous for what is to come but so so excited!) ALSO??? Reservoir dogs holy shit Dabi is absolutely reminiscent of Vic Vega that is driving me insane!!! Dabi dancing and singing as he tortures someone??? Many thoughts head full. Anyways I love the inspo for poison as well cause I’m genuinely so obsessed with like lovers on the run or criminal lovers who would kill for each other...Just like such a good trope. B6 What is your favourite story trope? Why?

Oh. Oooh. I know nothing about tropes (what qualifies as a trope?) but topics I love reading is friends to lovers (especially dumbasses to lovers with yearning and pining and stuff). Also and unrelated I love hurt/comfort BUT only if there is comfort. And it has to be good comfort. Like: give the characters some kind of hope, healing, tenderness. Don’t hurt them for nothing and if they don’t have someone to care about them. The why probably is quite obvious for the second (life is hard, right? let us see hope in fiction and healing that often enough isn’t happening in real life). As for the first: I’m not very much into love at first sight stories, I just love seeing well working relationships between characters be it romantic or not, and if there is a well written two folks who have been with each other forever suddenly realize: what if...? It just gives me fuzzy feelings and makes me happy.

B7 Which character is your favourite to read about? Why?

This is a hard one. In Mass Effect I enjoy David Anderson a lot (big shoutout to @jedirangerpenguin for her FABULOUS Anderson) and also James Vega. Both are not very often written, James especially not when not-Shega. (Don’t get me wrong, I love Shega, but I also and much more love reading well written character studies that do not focus on relationships.) I can’t really put why tbh? These characters vibe with me and are not very often portrayed as major characters so every story that focusses on them makes me very happy.

In Criminal Minds I enjoy well written David Rossi stories - again, he is neither a mass-favourite nor written often about. Good stories with him in a protagonist role, not in a mentor-like support role are so so so seldom. Especially because he often gets reduced to a mentor/father-like figure and that really shortens the potential the character holds. Why I like reading about him? Well, the series writers took the most freedom with him I think, there are so many little side notes you would never expect (plays video games, has experience with BSDM and drugs, like all these strange little facts that you don’t expect with a dude like him). Dave can be played so many interesting ways and technically isn’t limited to a specific role (even though I do get why the fandom sees him preferably in a specific role, just as a Dave shipper myself I have to strongly disagree... ;)).

I don’t think I can really explain well the ‘why’, but when you look at Anderson and Rossi, I definitely have a type of character that I enjoy reading about.

C6 Is there anything in canon that made you want to quit the show? What was it? Why did you hate it?

Let me think about it. It definitely has happened, but it was so intense that I deleted every memory of it...? Moments that have you strongly “this doesn’t make any sense!!” One example (that didn’t have me quit a show but strongly disagree) is JJ in Criminal Minds - and I do not only talk about the JJ/Reid thing at the end of s14 that came out of nowhere and did not make any sense looking at the previous 14 seasons. But with the episode #100 they made her undergo a MAJOR character change and it never convinced me. Tbh I don’t like the post-100 JJ at all (not in a general but in comparision with the pre-100 JJ). Luckily as she never was my fav/most important character for the show, I didn’t mind enough to quit it. But I know there were a few incidents of these things in other shows/movies that had me quit and say “no thank you”. I just ereased the memorie of it. (I’m not good with why’s tonight, I could elaborate on the JJ case but ask me another time.)

C8 What is one plot twist you wish people would stop using?

Okay so I have to speak here not from reading experience but from what I generally avoid. I don’t say it can’t be well done nor that people shouldn’t do it, just that I don’t get and don’t want to get a grip on it. Just what I absolutely do not like.

Enemies to lovers.

Especially if any kind of abuse is included and if the enemy’s part includes any kind of violence (including work related fighting). Nah, now that I think about it, even non-physical enemy-being included, so like verbal shit, bullying and all. All kind of actively acted enemy behaviour. I just feel like it could potentially influence (especially younger or instable) readers to shift their world view and how they react if they ever face a situation like that themselves. Like I don’t say people can’t change over time, but you should still not forget if someone treats you bad enough to be considered an enemy. If they did that in the past, they shouldn’t get involved with you romantically.

It’s one reason I can’t get myself getting into Far Cry 5. Everything I have read/seen about the game and then see about ships has my brain yell at me and everyone. It seems like a very abusive setting and just imagining any kind of romantic relationships between the Seeds and no-cult people has me shrudder. It’s brainwashing. It’s violence. How can that turn into love? And is that the kind of love we want to encourage?

Again, completely based on impressions because I haven’t played much of the game and read no fics. I just can’t.

I was tagged by the ah-mazing @treya-barton to share my fic preferences! (Very fitting, since we collaborate on a Souyo fic together!) It was super fun to read her answers because, well, we have a lot in common.

Slow burn or love at first sight?

Slow burn is a safer choice because it plays into the whole appeal of fic writing. It’s an infinite, free forum for fans to correct how their fav pairings meet and interact. And that can happen as quickly or slowly as a writer wants. Love at first sight is more of a ‘call to action’ than it is an incentive for readers to keep reading, imo.

Basically this: if it’s a one shot, gimme love at first sight. If it’s a multi-chapter, gimme slow burn.

Tldr; yes.

Fake dating or secretly dating?

Yes. A la Monica and Chandler in season five (right? I don’t remember).

Enemies to lovers or friends to lovers?

All of my OTPs are literally friends to lovers. All three of them.

“Oh no there’s only one bed” or long distance correspondence?

Bonus points if both of them want to share the bed and know the other one wants to share the bed as well.

Hurt/comfort or amnesia?

Oh man.

Yeah, I write a lot of hurt/comfort fics. I’m realizing now that maybe that’s not a good thing (haha) or maybe it’s a cry for help? EEEHHHHHH...nah. I just love the idea of characters loving each other through their pain/faults.

Fantasy AU or modern AU?

For some reason, the fantasy genre just suffocates me. I feel like I can be more creative and whimsical, oddly enough, in a more modern setting.

Mutual pining or domestic bliss?

I have OTPs in both camps. Usually one leads to the other anyway, SO.

Alternate universe or future fic?

Both! Fix-it fics are also great. But some Band-aids on the plot.

One shot or multi-chapter?

I’ll read anything, but I tend to write more contained fics. I try to steer clear of contained/bathtub fics and make sure there’s at least one pivotal moment (a confession, a kiss, a realization, something) so that the characters change at least a little bit from how they were in the beginning. Hopefully for the better, too.

Reincarnation or character death?

I’d prefer neither, though.

Arranged marriage or accidental marriage?

The only way I can think about accidental marriage is a “drunk in Vegas” scenario, haha. To me, ‘accidental’ implies comedy, while ‘arranged’ implies angst. I don’t enjoy angst personally, so I tend to steer clear of that.

High-school romance or middle-aged romance?

I have OTPs in both.

Or do you mean romance in a Middle Ages setting? If so, all three OTPs are accounted for.

Time travel or isolated together AU?

Two characters depending on each other for survival? Sure! Against, as long as it’s in a touching way and not a...torture p*rn movie/Killer Instinct kind of way.

Sci-fi or magic AU?

I’m bias toward sci-if because of series like Cowboy Bebop, Stellvia and Space Dandy. I just grew up with it more. I like mechs, spaceships, bounty hunters and dark skies.

Body swap or gender bend?

I feel like it can be a fun trope if it’s in the right hands.

Angst or crack?

Are crack fics still a thing? I feel like those were a big thing when I was in middle school. That being said, I used to write crack fics all the time. I’d incorporate inside jokes I had with friends too. I used to have so much fun coming up with the stupidest stuff and getting my friends to laugh.

Apocalyptic or mundane?

If I could make money writing a nonfiction product, it would be a Slice of Life.

My Top 8 Halloween films🎃👻

🎃Hocus Pocus (1993) - The fun Disney 90’s classic that reminds us every year how much fun Halloween can be. Armed with memorable quotes and musical stylings of Bette Midler and the acting chops of A pre “sex and the city” and “Sister Act”, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. This film always gives the fun feel Good’s for everyone.

🎃Trick ‘r Treat (2007) - I stumbled upon this movie one evening whilst I was getting ready for a Halloween party. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. At first, I just kept saying “damn, this movie is terrible.” But, as it went on, I felt more and more satisfied with the kookiness and chaos. I love the way all the stories intertwine in a single night. “Sam” has become one of my most fav characters I get excited to see every Halloween.

🎃The Strangers (2008) - The first time I saw this film it left me a little nervous and shaken on a visceral level. This story scares me mostly because this isn’t some crazy story that can happen from some outer-worldly force or demonic craziness, this was just people being gross. THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE THE COUPLE WAS SIMPLY HOME AT THE WRONG TIME. The soundtrack gives me the goosebumps and terrible nightmares.

🎃Coco(2017) - Technically not a Halloween movie, but dia de los muertos counts for something huge in my culture. This animated Disney film is so much fun. Memorable songs and witty quick jokes and references and a heartfelt story make this movie fun for adults and kids alike. The animation and visual candy is exciting for any student of detailed work.

🎃The Cabin in the Woods (2012)- No lie, I was still riding high from the sexiness of Chris Hemsworth in “Thor” when I saw this. This just brought me to the movie but, I stayed for the sheer cleverness and good times of this movie. The twists and turns keep you doing mental acrobatics but in a give me more kinda way. A definite must watch.

🎃Scream (1996) - I consider this movie the slasher film of my millennial generation. Staring Neve Campbell on previously only known for “Party of Five” this was her vehicle to be a bonafide movie star and I think she nailed it. All the killings being done using horror movie tropes, make this movie fun to watch. Masked killers will forever make for a good scary movie.

🎃Practical Magic (1998) - Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock star as two witch sisters who are completely opposite looking for love in a small town full of prejudices. This is a fun movie with different elements like a romantic comedy or “chick flick”. This film is sweetly enjoyable without feeling like a lifetime original movie(which there isn’t anything wrong with that).

🎃Addams Family Values - The sequel and in my opinion better of the Addams family follows our favorite kooky and all together ooky family as they go through a new baby, a new marriage and a threat that they don’t know they have until its much to late. Another good time with many memorable actors and actresses giving these characters so much life that you can’t help but love every spooky/fun moment.

👻The House of the Devil(2009) - A crazy and trippy thriller about a babysitter getting into more than she bargained for when she goes in for a normal job and ends up being prey for a crazy satanic cult. Shot like an old 70’s/80’s movie, this movie is a film students dream with the tropes and cinematography style.

👻Fright Night (1985/2011) - I couldn’t bring myself to choose just one. I loved the original and the re-make about a kid who discovers that his new neighbor is not only an ancient vampire but, also responsible for a string of murders in his neighborhood. Enlisting the help of an old vampire hunter and Las Vegas magician this movie made for a thoughtless yet fun watch.

👻The Craft (1996) - This movie always takes me back to A 90’s nostalgia that I love being blasted back to. Not a very scary movie but a fun watch for everyone during a time when Wiccan magic was at it’s most PR prime. This is a fun and easy Saturday afternoon watch.

👻A Nightmare on Elm Street(1984) - One of the first movies to make me loose sleep after watching as a tender 8 year old, after child’s play of course. This movie has a good story and an interesting and creepy character that has been used time and again in multi-able sequels and remakes. Our dear friend Freddy is always waiting in our dreams to get the revenge he feels entitled to.

In honor of the new season, I wanted to do a little celebration post. So I figured why not do an olicity fanfic rec post to tide us over until the season premiere tonight!

I’ve titled this as my fic rec #1, because I have a plethora of favorite olicity fics and I know I won’t be able to list them all in one post. (Honestly I have an olicity archive program on my computer that collects links to all of my fav fics and there’s almost 800 stories stored and counting)

Enjoy a couple of my favorite fics that I just keep reading over and over again.

Series:

Core Curriculum Series by @dettiot (college au, pre-series au, alternate arrow retelling au) A series of stories, each of which is a follow up to the main story Women’s Studies. The other stories are basically different outcomes that can occur based on what happened with the first story. Think of it as a choose you’re own adventure story!

Legacy by @ash818 (future fic, arrow next gen, canon divergence) A story chronicling the life of Jonathan Queen as he takes up the mantle as the Arrow. The story is so well thought out with amazing original characters that will make you think they’re actually part of canon.

21 Guns by @entersomethingcleverhere (military au, doctor au, friends to lovers) Felicity is a military doctor in Germany, Oliver is the soldier who got injured during a blast. The stories of Oliver’s recover and how his friendship with Felicity flourished into something more. Plus, everything else that comes after that.

Forever Is Composed of Nows by @dust2dust34 & @so-caffeinated (time travel au, canon divergence, next gen au, future fic, domestic olicity) Set in s2, future Barry shows up in the foundry with a little girl in his arms that he needs leave with Team Arrow because the little girl is in danger. Low and behold, the little girl also happens to be Oliver and Felicity’s future daughter! The story deals with Oliver and Felicity coming to grips with their future and the following stories follows the adventures of their future kids.

His Girl Wednesday Universe by @pimsiepim (no arrow au, assistant/boss au, friends to lovers) Has an Ugly Betty meets Arrow theme where Felicity is Oliver’s assistant. At first their relationship is a bit rocky, but ends up with Oliver pretty much finding the value of having Felicity in his life, both professionally and personally. And, there’s also feelings developing.

Oneshots:

Just One Night by @bunnybebe247 (no arrow au, friends with benefits au) What was supposed to be a one night stand turns into more nights spent together while becoming friends. Eventually becoming more.

Flashback by @RubyCaspar (canon divergence, time travel au) Set in s3. While in the foundry, the team gets a surprise visit from familiar faces, but not from this time.

home is in your arms by quisinart4 (canon compliant, future fic, humor, fluff) Oliver is needy, especially when Felicity’s attention is elsewhere.

zapp'o'lies by @sssssssim (canon divergence, justice league kind of) The Joker and Harley Quinn kidnap Oliver and Felicity and put them through a lie detector test. A special appearance by Bruce himself.

Free Fall by @supersillyanddorky06 (soulmates au, arrow retelling) Felicity discovers Oliver is her soulmate. It’s kind of difficult to pull away from him at this point. And Oliver doesn’t understand why he can’t pull away from her.

Once More (From the Top) by @writewithurheart (time travel au, arrow retelling) When Oliver from s3 died by Ra’s sword, he wakes up... back in 2012 when he came home to Starling City. Oliver relives his first year being back home, wanting to do things different this time. Especially where Felicity is concerned.

For the Shipping Meme! (yay!)

This time tagged by @celticmoonbeam with numbers: 1, 9, 31, 32 (and yes I’ll do something different for the last two ;) ) thank you!

1) Talk about the first ship you ever had.

I think it’s going to be Usagi/Mamoru from Sailor Moon franchise as I was like hm, 9 y. o. when it started airing in my country. Defineitly one of my otps. But there have been also Lois/Clark from The New Adventures of Superman with Terri Hatcher and Dean Cain. Yeah, I think those two ships are the frist ones of mine. :)

9) Do you have many ships that never got together at all?

Unfortunately yes... My biggest heart-break is Harry/Hermione from Harry Potter franchise. Doesn’t matter that JKR may regret her decisions now, the heart break was so real and painful. In a way I get the J/L of Sherlock fandom now. But only in a way, for we did not send threats to her for choosing a different path than our wishes, metas and everything pointed to. Also Ron/Luna - those two were made for each other.

Another heart break: House/Cuddy from House MD. Technically they did get together but the ship and the characters were treated so poorly in the end. I’m still angry over the destruction of all the character development done over 6 seasons to bring the caricature back in s8. Heh.

Hm, Hodges/Wendy and Hodges/Morgan from CSI (Las Vegas) franchise. Yeah, I squealed with delight when Wendy kissed Hodges and my heart will always beat a little faster for all the Hodges.Morgan scenes alas they went into sibling-like relationship with them.

I suppose Morgan/Garcia from Criminal Minds, although I shipped them kinda on the side and am satisfied with their close friendship as it has been shown in the show.

So far, Fishlegs and Ruffnut aren’t together and I’m not sure if it will end this way, but damn, I do hope they will (How to train your dragon)

Also, Natasha/Steve from Marvel Cinematic Universe. I kinda ship them. A lot. Also, Natasha/Burns but I love his family so I’m ok with them being just friends.

Mycroft/Anthea. I wish we got hints of them instead of Smallcroft, but there is something funny about Smallcroft, I have to give you that.

Also, Monk/Natalie in Monk. I liked Sharona but she wasn’t working with Monk for me, but Natalie... yeah, I could see her being with him and it working out in the end.

And Goerge Crabtree/Dr. Emila Grace from Murdoch Mysteries. I’m so angry at what they did with her. I loved her a lot. Plus Goerge is my top favourite character from the show. (although I’m behind one season now...)

Sweeney Todd/Mrs Lovett (in the Tom Burton Movie) - so I’m morbid, duh. But I’ll love to see a redemption for those two.

31) Talk about one of your favorite headcanons for a ship you love.

For Harry Potter: My headcanon is that the epilogue in HP-verse doesn’t exist and after the war ends anything can happen. This of course may lead to endearing but in the end nothing serious relationship of H/G and Hr/R then of course ends in H/Hr. One of my hc in this universe is that H/Hr are bonded magically: in mind, soul, heart and body and it’s a magical process taking over the years. They bonded intellectually sometime over book 3, then in heart between the ending of book 4 and ending of book 5 (the near-death experiences of the bonded mate respectfully). Their souls bonded during the war form the Weasleys wedding till the final battle. And the bonding in body obviously during their first time. The catch: such a bonding is considered as a legal, binding, magical marriage. I have lot’s of details how it goes and how they deal with it, but I’ll not go into it no much. But if someone interested please let me know. :)

For Sherlolly: Molly’s cat somehow broke into her home (aka certain consulting detective left him there) and she decided to keep him. She went with Toby name to commemorate Tobias Raggs from her top fav musical: Sweeney Todd.

For How to Train Your Dragon: The Choice » by reens - An arranged marriage between reluctant Astrid and heartbroken Hiccup. All set in the movie timeline. Perfect story with different POV’s. Defienitly a must read.

For Sweeny Todd: The Shadow Proves The Sunshine » by Pamena - Mr Todd is a reluctant rescuer of Mrs Lovett. And the redemption starts. With Toby (not the cat, although I bet that’s were Molly got the name for hers). Morbid themes of course. But still enjoyable read.

For House MD: I Will Buy You A Garden by pokeitlikejello - A trilogy of stories exploring the idea of Cuddy wanting a child, and Hose needed to be the one who gives it to her. But he’s House so it’s a long and difficult path to the, getting finally together and becoming a family. My top favourit author in House MD fandom.

For Harry Potter: Unsung Hero » by MeghanReviews - The other Boy-Who-Lived trope. You’ll cry, you’ll laugh, you’ll root for him andf Hermione, you’ll feel for Luna, you’ll hate Gryffindors and the Potters but you’ll not be bale to stay aways form this story.

For Lois&Clark: The New Adventures of Superman: Waking a Miracle » by AriaAdagio - an au with secrets in the past. Lois is the only one who can bring Superman to to world, but will Clark allow her? Very interesting and well written story.

Any guilty pleasures (like this character is evil/twisted/irl a nightmare or something else, but you still love them in this story)? Fav romance tropes? Love ya, have fun! ❤

This is absolutely going to be insanely long and so I’m going to tuck it under a readmore. Honestly sometimes it feels like I like talking about video games more than playing them.

My favourite game of all time is probably definitely Oblivion (Elder Scrolls IV); it was the first real game I ever played (like, crowded around my friend’s brother’s xbox 360) and the first game I ever bought (my parents didn’t like buying consoles because of their transitory nature so I was almost in high school when I got it). Fairne, my Altmer knight, was one of my first fleshed out characters and literally the saddest OC I have ever created.

Off of the top spot but still honourable mention games I still think fondly of even after having sat with them for a while (which is a hard spot to maintain, I get critical real quick; ie I dedicated a lot of time to Dra/gon Ag/e and Ma/ss Eff/ec/t but they will not feature here) is, of course, Morrowind (it doesn’t strictly feature romance but recommended mod is definitely Julan Kaushibael if you’re looking for lore-friendly romance options) and Skyrim (again, my romance mod rec is 3DNPC). Ohh also Bioshock (the first one; the second one was fine and the third one was off the fuckin’ rails), and Fable 2 (kind of; I have a LOT of problems with the Fable series starting with the attractiveness metre and what affects it and going from there... I also don’t include this in romance games because in this game even though there are technically options I’m entirely disinterested in them even in the realm of HC; although, there is a monk named Hammer who is The Best Character In The Whole Series)

Now for by far the biggest category, games that feature romance that I love. I’m gunna be very real, when I seek out games I seek out romance or at least companions; I’m not a huge fan of games that are supposed to be purely self-driven because, well... why do I care about this world if I’m not attached to anyone?

And let me just be upfront, my net is wide. Some of these games don’t strictly include romance, but it’s so close that I am satisfied filling in the blanks myself (or at the very least, baffled that the opportunity was not presented and think there was space for it to be that was skipped). So:

1. Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2

Only the second game TECHNICALLY includes romance, and has a rather notable gap in options (three companions from the first game reappear but only one is romanceable: I’ll admit I’m biased because he was the only one I wanted to be romanceable, but the lack of the other two is odd). The first game, though, the friendships are so intimate that I had literally no trouble filling in what few blanks were left (and VERY few blanks were left). My favourite to romance in these games is Aloth without a doubt; Tekehu comes second.

2. Tyranny

Same company as PoE (Obsidian, so the ones who did New Vegas) and much the same situation, a lot of the characters directly involved with your player are just so familiar and close to you that it’s not at all difficult to make the leap to romance even though there are no romances in game. Honestly, the headsman literally gets offended that you imply that he may not be wholly trustworthy just because the two of you have been in each other’s lives for so long. Bleden Mark is my favourite to not romance but wish I could in this one; Barik is second and only because he’s hot.

3. Transistor

Hoo. Boy. This is Supergiant games this time and. Wow. Wow. Wow. This one does have a romance but you’re just watching it unfold; you don’t make a character, nor do you make a lot of choices (besides larger game ones) but it’s an AFFECTING romance. It’s a lot. It’s so much. It’s a lot. I played it once and I literally just sat in a fog for so long afterwards. I haven’t played it since. It’s a lot.

4. Pyre

Supergiant again, and here’s where we hit a crossroads. There’s no romance in these games, specifically. You will get turned down if you ask, and sometimes you get turned down when the man of your dreams is cooking supper and tells you about the manic pixie dream bird that is literally never on screen for the entire game that he knew for roughly a day before giving up his whole life for her. Sometimes a big buff woman just flat out turns you down. But they’re just so profoundly kind to you and so good and warm and sweet that it doesn’t matter. You just pretend the manic pixie dream bird and demonic John Travolta don’t exist, and imagine a world where that’s the game you’re playing. Also, the main gameplay mechanic is arcane basketball. Hedwyn is my favourite of the bunch.

5. Fable 3

Why can’t I romance Ben Finn? Why can I romance any stranger on the street but I don’t even have access to Ben Finn after the plot is done? I’d ask Lionhead to explain but they got shut down, presumably because it was so profoundly whack that neither Ben Finn nor Paige were romanceable or accessible after the main plot. Ben Finn is my favourite which is hard because he’s not romanceable.

6. Saints Row (The Third, but 1 & 2 Too; we don’t talk about 4 even though it very technically has romance)

Anyone familiar with the series is expecting me to say JohnnyBoss and I’m here for JohnnyBoss of course but here is where I admit, as I admitted to my dear friend Leyla while we did our concurrent playthroughs, that I could not identify Hulk Hogan’s voice off the top of my head and was actually super into Angel before I could stop myself.

7. Stardew Valley

This is a huge outlier but I really liked romancing Elliot. Like I romanced everyone once and I think the purple haired girl was also cool but Elliot stuck deeply in my head. It’s standard farm sim fare so like there’s nothing exciting after the courtship but it’s very romantic.

As far as VNs go, I pretty much rattled off a list of my favourites already. Favourites to romance are Markus (RE:H), Vadeyn & Haron (Ebon Light), Guy (The Lady’s Choice), and Ricardo Ortega (Fallen Hero).

OH I guess I can cover my favourite mobile games too. There’s Ikémen Sengoku where I’ve played quite a few and loved absolutely none of them except Masamune Date whom I am in love with to this day. He was the first one I romanced (”man with eyepatch” is a Type) and I can’t even remember the others. Then there’s Lovestruck which is insanely frustrating at times, but I liked a discontinued series (”Speakeasy Tonight”): my favourite was Vince. My absolute current favourite by far (and favourite ever, frankly) is Sweet Enchantments, with Zain’s storyline. Queen of Thieves Remy and Nikolai are also fine, I’m reading Leon right now and cringing but he reads poetry so...

Also because I have to stay true to even games I’m mad about, Zevran (DA Origins), Fenris and Sebastian (DA2), Iron Bull (DAI), and Garrus (Mass Effect). Also because Fallout made me mad too, Gob (Fallout 3), and Hancock (Fallout 4). And Alkibiades in AC Odyssey but if I start talking about what Ubisoft did to god’s perfect game we’re gunna be here all night.

My guilty pleasures.... they mostly run in the moment. I try to make the best of a lot of characters that just aren’t worth the time because they need too much fleshing out that I just don’t have the interest in doing anymore. Overall I think the most defensive I’ve felt about a character I liked romancing was Sebastian from DA2 and only because it was exhausting to track down content for him that wasn’t just whack as hell for a variety of reasons that started with “the DA fandom has always been whack and terrible and always will be” and going on from there.

Favourite romance trope by far is “great big guy, literally just muscle fight dude, is head over heels in love with his SO” with ultra bonus points for “he has to utmost respect for them as a person and demonstrates that the person writing this trope has a good and healthy angle that they’re attacking this from”. Among the stars is also “old soldier who’s still going despite everything he’s seen, hanging on by a thread”, and “hot, uptight, snobby, easily flustered”.

You guys… I tried making this post 18 Favorite Books I Read in 2018, but GODDAMNIT I READ 160 BOOKS THIS YEAR AND HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO NARROW THAT LIST DOWN TO JUST 18 FAVORITES?!

It wasn’t worth being cute. Anytime I thought about cutting a book from this list, I felt a deep sense of betrayal and I was pretty sure the Book Gods would smite me.

Madly, Darkly Duet by Trisha Wolfe

This extremely dark romance is the first of its kind that I read and absolutely adored. These were the first books by Trisha Wolfe that I read, and I was hooked. Her way with words are basically magic.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

This was a recent read for me, and it was 100% worth the hype. I’ve been so into contemporary lately, it definitely took a book like this to pull me back into the fantasy worlds I love.

Until it Fades by KA Tucker

I was so surprised by this novel because it is a trope that I’m not a big fan of and usually avoid (single mother trope), however, it is also a sports romance (which is one of my favorites), so when my sister recommended it to me and told me the premise (a girl rescues a man who happens to be a famous athlete), I decided to read it despite my hesitations, and I’m so glad I did!

Caraval & Legendary by Stephanie Garber

I was absolutely swept away by Caraval and fell even harder in love with this world and its characters in Legendary. In fact, Legendary’s MC, Tella, is one of my all-time favorite MCs.

From Lukov with Love by Mariana Zapata

I mean… this is a love-to-hate, ice skating sports romance, what more can I ask for? Also, Mariana Zapata’s hilarious name-calling and put-downs in this were so epic.

Strange the Dreamer (Strange the Dreamer #1) by Laini Taylor

As always, Laini Taylor weaves a gorgeous, well-thought-out story with incredible characters. The premise is so interesting, I loved every second of reading this book.

Foolish Hearts by Emma Mills

This was a recommendation I was SO glad to have read! It’s the epitome of all things I love in YA contemporary romances.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (Creekwood #1) by Becky Albertalli

I have so many hearts popping around me like bubbles anytime I think of this novel. It’s such a sweet story and I adored the movie just as much.

King of Code/White Knight/Prince Charming by CD Reiss

OMG, I had no idea what I was getting into when I read my first CD Reiss novel, King of Code. She certainly is the Shakespeare of Smut! Of the three, White Knight was the one that unexpectedly gave me the most butterflies, but I adored all three of these books and have reread them all!

Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas

This is another trope I always thought I didn’t like: age gap, however, the forbidden romance aspect of this book is so seductive, I couldn’t help but be completely sucked in.

Sweet Filthy Boy (Wild Seasons #1) by Christina Lauren

Though the plot of this seems kind of… trite (couple marries in Las Vegas the first night they meet), as is typical of Christina Lauren, the story becomes so much deeper. I love the exploration of realness that a couple could potentially go through after meeting as these two characters have. Somehow, they turned an instalove story into a slow burn.

OMG this freaking book. I knew it was going to be good, but I wasn’t fully sure what to expect. It absolutely took me on such an incredible journey through all the feels and I appreciated every bit of it.

November 9 by Colleen Hoover

If you hate instalove and want to be convinced it can be done right, read this book. It’s the instalove book for readers who love slow burns. The uniqueness of this love story is so appreciated.

The Kiss Quotient (The Kiss Quotient, #1) by Helen Hoang

I’m always impressed when authors can make me relate so deeply to characters that are pretty different from myself, and that’s exactly what Helen Hoang did for me. I loved being inside the MC’s head and loved her story so much. I can’t wait for her next book!

Full Tilt Duet by Emma Scott

OMG I had no idea what I was in for with this series, but I certainly had no idea it’d knock me on my ass with all the angst and all the butterflies.

Royally Matched (Royally #2) by Emma Chase

I say this in my review, but OMG I really thought I was going to hate this book when, a few chapters in, I realized it was going to be based on a reality TV show (I’m not a big TV person as it is, but I kind of loathe reality TV). However, I absolutely fell in love with this story and the hero is one of my all-time favs.

How to Walk Away by Katherine Center

This was a book club read recommended by my Mom and all of us in book club loved this so much. I was all in with this one.

Misadventures of a College Girl (Misadventures #8) by Lauren Rowe

This is one of my all-time favorite reads from Lauren Rowe, which is saying something because I’m absolutely obsessed with her books. This one is the epitome of everything I love about Lauren, particularly the friendships, but the relationship in this one, while super steamy, is also so beautiful.

A Love Letter to Whiskey by Kandi Steiner

This book took me on a rollercoaster that I was entirely unprepared for… up until the very last page. I wanted to throw this book against the wall in the best way many times.

Sinner (Priest #2) by Sierra Simone

Oh, Sierra Simone. After reading Priest, this was everything I wanted it to be.

OMG my freaking heart. I’m so deeply in love with Colton and Sadie is one of my all-time favorite bad-ass characters… and the two of them together? So darkly magical.

Mister Bodyguard (Morgan Brothers #4) by Lauren Rowe

I’ve been so excited about this book for so long and after 4 books of wanting to know more about this character, I was not let down at all.

Blurred Lines (Love Unexpectedly #1) by Lauren Layne

OMG! This book came out of nowhere! Every book I read before this one were good, but not great, then BOOM this one hit me like a ton of bricks. Lauren Layne’s lowkey humor is so epic, I loved this story so much. Friends to lovers at its absolute best.

Maybe Someday (Maybe #1) by Colleen Hoover

100% an All-Time Favorite. Not just 2018. OMG, this book tore me open in the very best way. I fell so deeply in love while reading this book, I’d give anything to read it for the first time again.

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

I was absolutely living for this book. The badassery of Lira was so satisfying and perfect, even when she is powerless. And the fact that the love interest actually lives up to her awesomeness made it even better. It’s a rare time that I wish a book was a series.
