The Science behind Erasure

-it's actually ingenious!!

SO recently I wondered....if Aizawa does hero work after hours...does that mean he also has increased night vision?? Because it wouldn't makes sense for a hero who relies on his eyes to work at a time when he can't see....right?

(this led me on a scientific deep dive because I am a huge nerd.)

As we know, Aizawa's eyes light up (red) when he activates his quirk. It just so happens, red doesn't glare like other colors of light do. This means red light makes night vision easier. Why? Because your pupils don't need to re-adjust between the light source & the dark around you! This reduces eye strain & keeps your field of vision clear & consistent at night, while still illuminating your path!

Simultaneously, red light is difficult to see at a distance so it'll help keep your position safe from possible attackers. This is why military flash lights are usually red!

So YES!... Aizawa's quirk can improve his night vision... By acting like a red flashlight! But that's not all!

Then I started thinking of HOW his quirk works...He stares at someone, his eyes glow red, his hair floats...and somehow the enemy's power stops working??

As we know, Erasure deactivates the enemy's quirk gene. This happens when Aizawa glares at them. But HOW can he deactivate a gene by only seeing the outside of the body? Especially since Erasure doesn't erase physical mutations??

Turns out, red light has a longer wave length than other colors, allowing it to penetrate the body more easily! In fact red & Infrared light (invisible to humans) is often used in medical imaging to detect things like veins and blood vessels beneath the skin.

Simply put Aizawa's quirk penetrates the body kind of like an x-ray. The reason we can see his eyes light up, and NOT the target being illuminated( like the picture on the left below)?? It's because he likely also emits red light that crosses over into infrared spectrum. So the red light that actually enters the body is invisible to the naked eye.

However real x-rays fall on the opposite side of the light spectrum under Ultra violet light. They not only enter but pass through their target, So to be clear Aizawa probably does not have x-ray vision. You may have also heard of Infrared in terms of night vision goggles. Aizawa likely does not have thermal/night vision either. His eyes only EMIT visible red light which allows him to see better in the dark & Infrared which enters the body.

So while Aizawa's glowing red eyes may at first seem like a meaningless, but cool, feature of his quirk, it's really the tell into how erasure works!

However, glowing red eyes only tell us how aizawa's quirk REACHES the gene, not how he switches it off! So how does he do it?? With an electromagnetic field! The light spectrum is a small part of the larger electromagnetic spectrum & the only part of it visible to the human eye!

So, how do y'all know I'm not just making this up?

Because his hair floats!

What's the most familiar electromagnetic force humans encounter on a daily basis?--- STATIC ELECTRICITY! When aizawa switches on his quirk he essentially becomes a cat being rubbed with a balloon! The carbon nanofibers in his capture weapon conduct static electricity so that floats too!

Aizawa's Erasure works by emitting an electromagnetic field, which like the infrared light, penetrates the body of his target! Now that we know how his quirk reaches the inside of the body, the question is how does it disrupt the quirk function?

As it turns out, electricity can be fired at DNA to switch Genes on and off in real life! So Erasure specifically targets the quirk gene and immobilizes it temporarily with electricity!!!! That's crazy!!!

Since we know Aizawa can't erase the quirks of heteromorphic types it's safe to assume it's because physical mutations effect more than one gene & Erasure specifically targets a single quirk gene.

If Erasure got into the hands of AFO it could easily mean the end of the world, or any one who apposes AFO for that matter. Sure AFO could use Erasure as Aizawa does, but he could also scientifically manipulate it to target genes OTHER than the quirk gene. Meaning he could kill you, or even make your body fall apart, with just a look.

GOJO'S SIX EYES because we don't talk enough about what Gojo sees... and when you really think about it, it's TOO MUCH

First off, thinking about how freaking insecure I'd be if Gojo were real and he could see me.

That man's vision is beyond 20/20 when his eyes are uncovered... Aside from seeing cursed energy in incredible detail, he can probably see very fine details and that's scary.

He can see all the flaws. LITERALLY.

There's a panel in the manga that also revealed he can see someone's soul... WHAT THE FUCK. He perceives it the same way Mahito can.

A normal human body to his uncovered eyes consists of physical and spiritual layers and he can see it.

Gege mentioned in a fan book that with the blindfold on, his vision is like a high definition thermal camera.

What does the world even look like to his naked eyes?

Do his eyes function like a microscope sometimes? Since, you know, manipulation of cursed energy to an atomic level and all that. And when he was a student, he passively mentioned learning how to detect poisons to essentially train his Infinity to recognize it as a threat and filter it out.

Speaking of manipulating cursed energy to an atomic level, Gojo would be great at physics, chemistry, and math. 🤷‍♀️

How far is his field of vision and how's the depth? Do the Six Eyes defy logic and Gojo has 340º vision? Like a bird of prey or something? Maybe not literally, but his visual perception probably is something similar to that or idk.

I bet he can see through his eyelids too.

Can he see through walls? It's insinuated that he can in Season 1 Episode 3, when Nobara was fighting that low Grade 3 Cursed Spirit. And he was wearing a blindfold.

Can he see other wavelengths of light? Infrared, radio, ultra-violet, X-ray, and gamma-ray?

The normal human eye interprets a limited range of light. Meaning, there are colors that normal people can't see. "Impossible colors" are a thing... And Gojo is not normal. Can Gojo SEE "IMPOSSIBLE COLORS"?

Gege... I know you hate the man, but give us a full breakdown of what the Six Eyes can SEE. I WANT TO KNOW. 😭 My imagination ain't enough.

His eyes got me on a spiral, and don't get me started on the amount of information his brain is probably processing every fucking day if his eyes are uncovered.

Also, if Megumi brings it up at some point, Gojo would DEFINITELY argue that he has better eyesight than a bald eagle. 💀

I was wondering if phantump would make a good pet, they're my favorite pokemon!

Unfortunately, a phantump wouldn’t be the best pet for a lot of owners (but if you’ve been following this blog for a while, this probably isn’t much of a surprise). Unlike a lot of ghost-type pokémon, however, this low score doesn’t come from outright malice. Rather, it’d just be impractical and a bit… creepy-to-unethical.

Size is not problem when it comes to phantumps. These critters(?) weigh only fifteen pounds and levitate to get around, so there’s not a lot of homes that they would have trouble getting around. That being said, I’m unsure if a phantump would be happy living in a residential area. Wild phantump make their homes deep in abandoned forests, where few to no people live (X). These little creatures long for the company of humans and are always looking to befriend them, but they do so by bringing lost humans to them rather than venturing out into the world themselves (Ultra Sun, Violet). They do this with… less than honest means, causing adults to get “hopelessly lost” in their woods by mimicking the voice of a lost human child (Ultra Sun). Phantump want the attention of humans, but they want it on their own terms, on their own turf. That might not be the best recipe for a pet.

As ghost-type pokémon, phantumps are capable of using some pretty startling, but thankfully (hopefully) nonlethal moves like Astonish, Confuse Ray, and Phantom Force. This isn’t the li it of their abilities, however. They can use the move Curse, which is a major red flag in the hands (or, uh, tiny handless arms) of a ghost-type species like phantump due to it’s ability to induce fainting over time. This move aside, phantumps aren’t exceptionally dangerous. It seems that they prefer trickery to fighting in general, but like we always say, accidents happen. A tantrum-ing phantump could be an issue.

Now to get to the elephant in the room: a pet phantump would be creepy at best, unethical at worst. See, as previously mentioned, these pokémon have an uncanny ability to mimic the cries and screams of human children, which is creepy enough on its own (Sun, Ultra Sun). This ability comes from their origin: phantumps are actually the spirits of children who got lost in the woods and died, which now posses rotten tree stumps (X, Y). While it seems like these pokémon are not aware of their true origin, that whole situation brings up a whole lot of ethical questions. I for one prefer not to make pets out of people’s ghosts, but it’s really up to the individual.

Before I close out, you may have heard rumors in the past that the leaves that grow on phantumps’ heads can be brewed and boiled into medicine that can cure any illness (Moon, Ultra Moon). Unfortunately, while the pokédex seems to confirm that this legend is true, you can expect your pet to be providing you with the cure for whatever ails you: whenever these leaves are plucked, they wither away instantly (Scarlet).

All-in-all, keeping a pet phantump is most likely more trouble than it’s worth, I’m sorry to say.

Zartan

A ruthless mercenary in the employ of the terrorist organization Cobra, the enigmatic Zartan is a master of disguise of the highest order. Fluent in over twenty languages with a perfect ability to imitate the voices of others, Zartan uses make-up and holograms to replicate the personages of anyone he so chooses, making him the ultimate infiltrator. He is additionally an expert martial artist, master archer as well as the leader of the violent biker gang known as the Dreadnoks.

Zartan suffers from a peculiar malady wherein he is highly allergic to sunlight. Exposure to ultra-violet rays causes him great pain, making his skin turn a shade of gray. Yet he recovers quickly when he is able to get out of direct sunlight. He additionally has a history of psychiatric difficulties. It is possible that Zartan's sun allergy is a result of the various chemicals he uses to facilitate his disguises; and that his psychological turmoil stems from the mental strain of pretending to be so many different individuals.

In an early mission for Cobra Commander, Zartan assumed the guise of the GI Joe commando, Snake Eyes. In the midst of this mission, Zartan killed a sensei who was the uncle of the esteemed ninja, Storm Shadow. Believing it was actually Snake Eyes who had killed his uncle, Storm Shadow ended up joining the ranks of Cobra as a means to gain revenge.

Zartan continued on as a valued member of Cobra, soon joined by his younger siblings Zandar and Zarana, and later by his daughter, Zanya. Zartan left the organization following the Cobra Civil War, a conflict that was ended when Zartan felled Serpentor with a shot from his longbow.

Actor Zack Hoffman provided the voice Zarten, first appearing in the sixth episode of the first season of GI Joe: A Real American Hero, airing on September 10th, 1984.

List of consistent themes in Ninjago because I feel like there are a lot of themes that people don’t discuss

Good VS Evil. The most obvious one, so I don’t feel the need to explain it too much. I will say it’s not too black and white especially compared to most media with the Good VS Evil theme; the show makes a point of showing that even horrible people can have a good side to them, especially with Garmadon, who, after being resurrected in his Oni form, is determined to learn how to be good, despite he himself thinking it’s impossible for an Oni to be good. But by the end of Crystalized he’s helping rebuild the monastery.

Grief. I’d argue that this is one of the biggest themes in the series, second only to Good VS Evil — Zane’s death deaths, Wu losing Morro, the team thinking Wu had died multiple times, Cole’s fall in season 10, Nya’s sacrifice, Skybound as a whole, season 9, season 11’s Ice Chapter, just overall there are such heavy themes of grief all throughout Ninjago. Not just is this important given Ninjago’s target audience, but how each individual character copes with grief is also important to see. Everyone copes differently, and even the people you look up to grieve. Even Inner Steel feels like a song about grief (to be honest this might be because it debuted in an episode literally titled The Benefit of Grief but who knows anymore), and Sally mentions she wrote it because she wanted to help people feel better. Grief is a huge fucking theme in Ninjago but I don’t see people talk about it. Maybe I’ll make a post about Ninjago and grief specifically, idk.

Found family and, by extension, familial/platonic love. The ninja are obviously a found family. I’d be surprised if they’re not basically adopted by each other’s families either — Ray and Maya probably adopted everyone on sight, as did Ed and Edna, and I’d be surprised if Lou hasn’t grown to see Cole’s teammates as his own kids too. Even going outside the ninja and their biological families, the Upply and even the ninja and Benthomaar (Lloyd even says “You can’t pick your family, but you can pick your friends” to Benthomaar) are pretty solid found family imo.

Redemption. Think about it. Morro was eventually given a redemption arc. Harumi was. The Dragon Hunters sans Iron Baron were. Garmadon was given a redemption arc (on more than one occasion). Even fucking Killow and Ultra Violet were redeemed at the end of Crystalized. Redemption is a less prominent theme than the others listed, but it’s still important enough that I feel it’s necessary to point it out.
